VERY comprehensive & useful book!!
This is a very comprehensive book on publishing your nonfiction book! It is packed with many tips that I have never thought of, and it includes useful strategies for every stage of the process (before your write, during, and after writing your book). I found the interviews with successful writers to be especially useful. This is a remarkable and useful book, and I highly recommend it. Please mark if you find my review helpful. Thank you so much!
Required Reading for Nonfiction Authors
While I made my headline about nonfiction authors, I dare to say it is required reading for anyone in the nonfiction book industry. Never has there been such a comprehensive, generous, and easily used book written about this topic. As a ghostwriter/editor/coach for nonfiction authors, part of my work is teaching my clients about the industry. Far too many providers in this field take advantage of ignorance - instead of being transparent about what it takes to make a nonfiction book a success. If you are a future author, beware of any company or individual who offers "rose colored glasses" about what it takes to make a book profitable. It is NOT easy. With this book from Stephanie Chandler, the task is easier. Specific Things I Liked About this Book The book is well organized and thought out. If you already know a lot about nonfiction publishing, you still want to get this book. I guarantee - with no doubt - you will find things you did not know before. Even if you know almost all of it, this carefully structured book is a great resource for to keep on your book shelf for easy reference. However you have your current knowledge organized, I would be willing to bet accessing the information in this book will make the information easier to find. She included personal stories of published authors. When one of them was asked if there is anything the author would do differently in their next book, I was happy to see this statement: "I'd be more cognizant of who my true audience might be." In my work, I find only a few book authors who have done this task well. Believe me when I tell you, identifying your target reader is crucial to book sales and profits from being a book author. I use the handle "profit ready book" in my marketing. Doing this one thing, knowing your target reader, is probably the most important thing an author should do for making money. I could write a book length review of the Nonfiction Book Publishing Plan because I found it so useful. I will end my review with this statement: If you purchase the book to only get the checklists and systems in it, you will save a ton of hassle, time and money. There is no reason why you wouldn't want to purchase this book if you are serious about being a book nonfiction author. Disclosure: I was given an advance copy of this book as a beta reader. However, I also purchased a digital version for my Kindle. Don't let the fact I got a free copy sway your acceptance of my positive review.
I put my highlighter away...
I put my highlighter away because the whole book was turning yellow. This guide to "profitable" self-publishing is just that. It's about making money as an author, as an expert, as a business. It's for authors who want to make money and for businesspeople who want to write a book to promote their businesses. It's inspiring as well as informative with actionable steps you can take to make your book sell. It also includes interviews with successful nonfiction authors so you can see how they did it and follow in their footsteps no matter if you self-publish, are on track to publishing with an agent and a traditional publishing house, or if you're working out a hybrid deal. There are a lot of great ideas in this book and the reader resources are invaluable. They're linked in the Kindle edition so you might want to grab the book in both print and ebook formats.
FULL of practical suggestions and expertise
The Nonfiction Book Publishing Plan took me much longer to read than usual—because I kept stopping to implement the amazing suggestions the authors made. If you are planning to publish in the next 12 months or if you have already published your book—as I have—get this book!!! It will save you time, money, and frustration! Even eighteen months after publishing my book, I found a huge number of ideas that I can implement now. Stephanie and Karl, thank you for sharing your in-depth and timely expertise! Susan J. A guide to self-publishing
Review of Chandler’s and Palachuk’s "The nonfiction book publishing plan" by Paul F. Ross Considering self-publishing? Chandler’s and Palachuk’s The nonfiction book publishing plan is well worth buying and reading. This reviewer’s publishing experience is publishing scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals of science. That’s “write a report following the style of the journal in which you wish to publish, send the manuscript to the editor, proofread the article the journal intends to publish to make sure it is what you, the author, intend” and has rather little to do with what one learns about self-publishing by a careful reading of Chandler and Palachuk. Chandler and Palachuk offer nineteen chapters. You, the author of your intended self-published work, need the advice and experience offered in every chapter and the eight “author interviews,” the experience of self-publishing as seen by individuals who have done it. As you move toward self-publishing, you must pick a book size … what sizes are available? Do you prepare your manuscript using MS Word? If not that, what? What page size ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Chandler, Stephanie, and Palachuk, Karl W. (2018) 'The nonfiction book publishing plan: The professional guide to profitable self-publishing' Authority Publishing, Gold River CA v + 293 pages ____________________________________________________________________________________________ do you use for your manuscript? What are you going to send to your prospective printer when your manuscript is ready? What price should you put on your book? What will the costs of printing be? What profit can you expect? Are the book orders going to come to you with you putting an address label on an envelope and carrying each envelope to the local post office? How many books should you have printed in the first printing? How will prospective buyers find out that your book is available? What profit can you expect? Are there unhappy surprises awaiting you if you don’t know how to navigate the options? Can your friend walk into his/her local bookstore and order your book? Will buyers be able to order your book through Amazon.com? Reading Chandler and Palachuk, you’ll learn there are many questions you didn’t know need your answers. The authors provide fourteen pages of resources – forty one topics from “advertising” to “writer’s groups and conferences.” Chandler and Palachuk declare their publisher is Authority Publishing in Gold River CA. I think that’s a made-up publisher’s name, a practice they recommend for you. I don’t know who their printer is … although I think they identify their printer and I’ve simply forgotten who it is. I bought my copy through Amazon.com. Don’t try self-publishing without having introduced yourself to the issues by reading Chandler and Palachuk. Great, Current, Advice on Book Publishing
I wrote a book in 2007 that was published by Wiley Press. It sold pretty well, but I was surprised at two things: 1) how small the royalties on books are; and 2) how little a traditional publisher promotes books (with exceptions for best sellers, etc.). I knew that my next book would be self-published. I'm working on it now and bought The Nonfiction Book Publishing Plan to help me with the technical aspects of self-publishing, finding the right kind of competent editors, understanding copyright and ISBN issues, etc. Pretty much every question I have is answered in this excellent book. I bought the Kindle edition and the number of highlights I've made is extensive. I've looked up some of the resources provided and been impressed with the additional information available. I sent a note to one of the authors who responded to me the very same day with an answer to my question. If you are writing a nonfiction book - and even if it's not your first one, this book will easily pay for itself with the help that it provides!
This book has it all.
Wow. I've read several books on publishing and self-publishing books, but this one is the best. Chandler and Palachuk write from experience. They are both successful self-published authors. What I liked best about this book was the sheer amount of practical advice given. And if they aren't experts in a field like tax law or copyright, they steer you to people who are. While the information can be overwhelming at times, I am glad to have all of it at my fingertips. My calendar is well-marked now with chapters from this book to reread when I get closer to my book launch. This is a book I will reread again and again.
Finally A Book for Non-Fiction Writers
An excellent book for anyone that is or wants to be a non-fiction author. The book is filled with valuable information focused on the publishing process for non-fiction books. Usually writing books focus on fiction and tell you these procedures will also work for non-fiction. This book is precisely the opposite. It says what works for non-fiction. I have never read another book so focused on non-fiction. The well-written book has information that explains how to implement the process if I want. Once read this book is a resource to keep on my bookshelf for future reference.
Excellent, practical advise on writing AND marketing.
I'm an out-of-date published author, one expensive technical book published traditionally 35 years ago with low sales. Now retired, I'm hoping to reinvent a non-fiction writing career. I'm leaning toward self-publishing but need to learn. This book does it! It does a good job on planning, writing and publishing, including important info on cover design, back-cover text (promotional) and using editors & reviewers. E-book publishing is covered. Equally (maybe even more) important are the excellent marketing and business-related chapters including, of course, Amazon. You don't just write a book and expect it to sell. It takes effort. This book tells you how. The two co-authors have published several books and both have related businesses. They speak from practical experience. Interviews with other successful authors included. Wish me well on my new career!
I always like books with practical - applicable strategies
I spent quite some time going through this Kindle book and there are quite a few things I appreciated, one was that this book had applicable an practical strategies. I have been reading Stephanie's books for years now and one thing that she does is give strategies that you can actually go and implement. The second thing that I really liked was chapter 4, which was "Choose a Niche Audience". That's something that I really wanted to learn how to do better because when I release a book, I want to capitalize on the niche audiences and categories on Amazon and this book really went into that. Overall, the book was great and the specifics is where the best parts were.

An Excellent Overall Guide - this became my "go to" guide
I am about to publish my first book and chose to go the self-publishing route. As a newbie, I bought a number of books to guide me through the process and this is the one that brought it all together for me. Here are some things I loved about it: * It has a clear structure. I know exactly where to go for any question I had in the publishing process. * It has interesting and informative Author Interviews. * Some key insights in the text such as this one from Seth Godin (directed towards authors): "Your problem is not piracy. Your problem is obscurity." * Excellent lists of Resources at the end Highly Recommended!
An excellent, thorough guide for authors on publishing your nonfiction book.
In this wonderful book, Stephanie Chandler and Karl W. Palachuk brought together an incredible depth of information and guidance on publishing a nonfiction book. I have never seen another resource that covers all aspects of publishing to this extent and in a manner that is so easily understood. As someone who’s tried to tackle some of these tasks on my own in the past, I deeply appreciated the detailed steps the authors laid out. And, in addition to advice on publishing your work, Stephanie and Karl gave great advice for building the platform of readers that will receive the book and how to leverage the book into increased attention for the rest of your business. This book will be an invaluable resource for people new to publishing and for those who’ve tried to figure things out themselves in the past and still have much to learn. I was honored to receive an ARC copy for review and am now recommending that other authors buy this book.
If only I'd known!
This is the most comprehensive guide for publishing/self-publishing that I have referenced.....and I have referenced many. I wish I had known about it prior to publishing my memoir. It includes everything you need to know, including information on beta readers, editing, book design, printing and distribution, ISBN information, ebooks, audiobooks, reviews, website, launch business operations, and more. I highly recommend this book and it will be my "go-to" reference in the future. If you are self-publishing, do yourself a favor and get this book. You won't be disappointed.
A MUST read before you even BEGIN
Write, write, write but as you write, definitely read this book as you do it. I cannot begin to express how much I learned and how many highlights and dog eared pages are in this book. I cannot imagine publishing a nonfiction book without reading this. I recommend- actually demand- it to anyone even thinking of publishing a nonfiction book. Stephanie has excellent resources outside of this including her annual online conference, emails, Nonfiction Author’s Association- and more. Thank you Stephanie!!
Great resource for nonfiction authors
This book covers a wide range of topics that authors need to understand if they want to self-publish a high-quality nonfiction book and attract their ideal readers: editing, design, printing, publicity, and more. Stephanie and Karl share anecdotes from their personal experience as authors, which is helpful because they represent two different paths and genres. The book also features interviews with other authorpreneurs about their self-publishing journeys and how their books have helped them grow their businesses. Full disclosure: I know Stephanie though my involvement as a chapter leader in the Nonfiction Authors Association and received an advance review copy. I found Stephanie and Karl's book valuable enough to buy the Kindle version, which I'm using as a reference as I prepare to launch my nonfiction book. There are so many details involved in publishing a book, and I want to get it right.
Practical, strategic, and inspiring
I'd been looking at self-publishing as a "stepping stone" to signing with a traditional publisher. However, this book has me re-evaluating whether that's still the best route for me to take. The publishing world has changed dramatically over the past decade such that the cachet and (supposed) wider distribution provided by traditional publishers is no longer an automatic draw. Chandler and Palachuk provide strategies for not just writing and marketing non-fiction books, but also developing multiple related products and income streams based on those books. They intersperse explanations regarding current trends in self-publishing and tips for how to make the most of your writing with interviews with people who have succeeded using these methods. I like how the interviews keep the information from being merely theoretical and make it real. As both an author and a business owner, after reading this, I'm now far more confident that self-publishing is the way to go.
Everything You Wanted to Know About Publishing Your Nonfiction Book
Just finished this book, and it's the only book I've found about self publishing exclusively for nonfiction authors. There is a brief section on working with a publisher, as well, which covers the subject in general and is informative. The authors cover everything you can imagine in nonfiction self-publishing, showing they really care about helping us authors publish our work successfully. No frills, no pies in the sky, just the facts generously supplemented with personal experience and interviews with authors. If you are considering self-publishing, get your hands on a copy of this book. If you are a nonfiction author, consider joining the Nonfiction Authors Association, created by Stephanie Chandler and packed with helpful information in multiple formats.

The "Everything You Need to Know About Self-Publishing a Non-Fiction Book" You've Been Waiting For.
This is the book I wished I had before I published my non-fiction, inspirational book. As I was reading it, as an author of fiction and non-fiction, I realized a lot of the principles the authors explained, in great detail, could be applied, in theory, to my fiction. If you are a published author, or want to become a published author, I would greatly advise you to purchase a copy of this book, read it thoroughly to build a foundation of knowledge about building a platform for your work. As writing is a business, and becoming self published, you will be growing your own business, the price of this work is pennies compared to the wisdom and knowledge you will garner. I received an advance review copy of this book and am sharing my honest opinion.
Practical, comprehensive, and enlightening
If you’re an author who likes to unwind by reading before going to sleep, this book is NOT for you. After hopping out of bed several times to hit my computer, searching for recommended sites and making notes, I didn’t get to sleep until 3 a.m. I had already read Stephanie’s “The Nonfiction Book Marketing Plan” –a very help resource in itself—and was expecting a lot of repetitive information. While there is some overlapping, this joint venture with Palachuk has resulted in a fresh approach and additional insights. Published in 2018, is also five years newer than Stephanie’s 2013 offering, and a lot can change in five years. Both Chandler and Palachuk author “how-to” books, and have a wealth of experience behind them in monetizing the “how-to” and “self-help” genres through lecture circuits, online workshops, etc. Even those of us who, like me, write biographies and inspirational literature will find plenty of helpful content. I found the “Author Interviews,” a staple in Stephanie’s “Non-Fiction Book Marketing Plan,” scattered throughout the text and containing some valuable nuggets as successful authors responded to her question, “What would you do differently?” While geared toward the self-publisher, this book even contains a closing chapter on traditional publishing. Filled with helpful resources and links, for some, this will be the only book they need on the subject. For all, it’s an investment that will pay rich dividends.
Useful even when you are following the traditional publishing route
I requested to receive an advanced copy of this book because I am currently in the process of writing a non-fiction book and I wanted to see how to make the whole process as hassle free and profitable as possible. What follows is an honest review: The authors lay out clearly the reasons, financial and otherwise, why anyone would want to self-publish a book, which I hadn’t seen so clearly stated anywhere else. I appreciated the financial breakdown of costs and benefits and reading this section definitely encouraged me to pursue the self-publishing route in the future. I really wanted to read the book to find out more about marketing and promotion and I wasn’t disappointed. The authors lay out a detailed plan for choosing a niche audience, developing a website tailored to that audience and how to get your book noticed prior to the launch date. These were the major questions in my mind and I have found the book invaluable when it comes to delivering the information in a clear, concise and comprehensive way. My current book is for a traditional publisher and but I have still found most of the information in the book really useful. And also, it has definitely inspired me to try to the self-publishing route for future books. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting the soup to nuts run down on how to self-publish a book.
If you only buy one book on publishing as a nonfiction author, make it this one
Buy this book now and devour it. It will be the best purchase you will make. Every author who wants any chance at making money at their craft needs to know more than how to write a book or an article. I've been writing and publishing since the mid-1970's. I have seen the market change and learned to negotiate my way through it. Stephanie's book solves does what it has taken many of us years to discover. I really wish the writing business was easy but it isn't. No business is regardless of what the purveyors of quick profits may say. However, it is well within the reach of anyone who is willing to do the work, especially since Stephanie shows you how. Step by step, The Nonfiction Book Publishing Plan lays out precisely what to do and most importantly, how to do it. This will be one of the best purchases you will ever make.
Self-publishing? You need this book!
If you are self-publishing, you need this book. I bought the ebook, and then my daughter bought the printed book for me, not knowing I had already bought it. I'm so glad I have both. When I am on my laptop I can quickly look things up, or I can refer to the printed copy. I have referred back to the printed copy multiple times after reading it through once, and I'm surprised the pages aren't falling out because it's so well-used. The book has gobs of helpful information, from writing the manuscript through to planning your book launch. I found the chapters on pre-production for self-publishing, book design and production, and book printing and distribution especially helpful. It's so comforting to get the straight story from authors who have been there and done that. The authors provide website information for many additional resources, and help to navigate the confusing and sometimes overwhelming world of self-publishing. Since I'm going to be planning my book launch next, that chapter is especially helpful right now. I highly recommend this book!
Every nonfiction author's essential reference
This book exceeded my expectations. I hoped for a road map to self-publishing. Nonfiction Book Publishing Plan delivered a travel guide! Detailing pros and cons about every decision point (traditional vs. self-publishing, print and/or digital, distribution channels, promotional approaches, etc.), the authors also point out pitfalls to avoid. And in between chapters, they bring in other authors to share their own experiences with every step of the publishing journey. Best of all, Chandler and Palachuk remind readers that their book can be "a first step in building a profitable business." They encourage writers to begin with that mindset, and provide actionable steps for making that dream a reality. Since I couldn't wait for release date to hear what Stephanie Chandler had packed into her newest book, I asked for and received an advanced copy in exchange for this honest review. My take: Every nonfiction author needs this indispensable reference on their shelf--wherever they are along the road to profitable publication.
An Excellent Guide on How to Navigate the Nonfiction Publishing Process
Finally, a book on book publishing and marketing relevant for nonfiction authors. Full of insight, useful tips, and resources, this book should be the go-to guide for anyone contemplating writing and publishing nonfiction books. It also has valuable information for those of us already experienced in the world of nonfiction publishing, as I myself found out when reading it. The authors divide the book publishing process into three phases: before launch, during the launch period, and post launch. Each chapter has specific tools and information for moving through this process in a planned, purposeful way. Most satisfying, at least to this reader, unlike many books on book publishing, the authors do not oversell their own publishing and marketing services. Kudos to them for taking a higher road than many. Highly recommended for all nonfiction authors, while novelists, poets, and other authors will likely benefit from these tips and resources as well.
An Excellent Resource for Nonfiction Authors
Chandler and Palachuk have compiled their considerable nonfiction publishing experience into a helpful, readable, and practical book. The Nonfiction Book Publishing Plan covers the gamut of what any self-publishing nonfiction author should know before tackling such a large-scale project. In short, it's the book I wish I would have had before self-publishing my books years ago! I'll definitely be referring to this book for future self-publishing projects. Disclaimer: I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

An incredibly valuable resource for any nonfiction writer
I have 4 traditionally published books and am releasing a new one next year. Although I consider myself to be an experienced author, I found so many incredibly useful ideas in this book. I’m only 1/3 of the way through and I had to leave a review because this is the most comprehensive book on nonfiction book publishing I’ve read - and I’ve read quite a few. I wish I had this when I first started publishing! I look forward to reading the rest of the book.

The book helped me understand how to navigate Amazon and provided clarity on steps to launch my next book. I give the book 5 stars for its stellar infusion of takeaways that I've already put into motion.
An easy book to recommend!
I’ve been a fan of Stephanie Chandler for years so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy of her latest book. There are many books on how to “be an author” but what I especially like about The Nonfiction Book Publishing Plan is that it clearly lays out the steps for a nonfiction writer to take their work to the next level by thinking in terms of an author business. As many others have said, this book is packed with practical, easy to follow advice. This is an easy book for me to recommend as one you’ll want to keep close and refer back to again and again. Good overall guide
The authors focus specifically on writing and publishing nonfiction from initial creation up through marketing. Interviews with published authors are mixed throughout to provide perspectives from those who have successfully completed the proposed activities. The chapter on Beta reader what particularly interested and may be an area that nonfiction writer overlook. The overall focus is on self-publishing. Resources are provided.
If you write nonfiction, you have to have this book
Stephanie Chandler's new book takes you all the way from your first question, "Should I self-publish or traditionally publish?" to a full-blown publishing plan. The writing is so clear and to the point, it feels like the author is talking just to you. The book is very easy to read and digest. The author has done herself in real life all the steps she mentions in her book, so she knows what she's talking about. Thank you to the author for putting all this valuable insight together in one place. An excellent guide for all nonfiction writers.
Everything I needed
I savored every chapter of this book. Having read numerous guides to writing and marketing non-fiction, I was searching for a real nuts and bolts book that was clearly written and organized. I cannot emphasize enough how practical and honest the advice was in this book. My own non-fiction book has been written, and I feel confident that I can follow the instructions (maybe not all of them) and get the marketing job done. Thank you both.
