In The New Bohemians, LA-based designer Justina Blakeney defines the New Bohemians as creative individuals who are boutique owners and bloggers, entrepreneurs and ex-pats, artists and urban farmers. They embrace free-spirited, no-rules lifestyles and apply that attitude to all areas of their existence, including their homes. With little distinction between work and play, the new boho home often includes an office, art gallery, showroom, photography studio, restaurant, or even a pop-up shop. The New Bohemians explores 20 homes located primarily on the East and West coasts. Exclusive interviews with the owners, 12 DIY projects created by Blakeney and inspired by objects found in the homes, and a "Plant-O-Pedia" offer insight into achieving this aesthetic. In addition, each home is accompanied by an Adopt-an-Idea section that offers general decor, styling, and shopping tips for easy duplication in your own home.

a.k.a. "The Lifestyles of the Rich and Vaguely Famous Bourgie-Bohemians"

I had such high hopes for this book based on the fact that sooooo many people I follow on Instagram rave about it. It's good, but it's also got some problems--at least if you're a budget-conscious shopper. The good: 1. The pictures are beautiful, and that's great since most of the people checking out this book are likely more interested in design inspiration than lifestyle philosophy. There are many ideas to be gained from seeing the way other folks combine patterns, for instance. 2. The projects at the end of each section are the best part of the book, IMO. They are super cute, clearly explained and, for the most part, pretty easy. 3. Lots of wealthy people featured in this book (see below), but occasionally there's a middle school teacher or some such thing, and those are the best parts of the book for those of us who don't live in the lap of luxury. The not great: 1. This is the WORST part of the book. There's some cognitive dissonance between the way the writer describes early bohemians who lived the way they lived because of a lack of income and the "bohemians" in this book, who are clearly not what I would call "broke." What I want to know is how a single mom with only $200 (or less) a month of disposable income is able to decorate her home in bohemian fashion, not how a couple of trust fund kids living in Portland or a cosmetics brand mogul in LA are able to style their homes. The latter is not bohemian--it's folks who can afford to spend a lot of money decorating. It's what I call bourgie-boheme, AT BEST. These people are not the parallels of those south-of-France bohemians described in the front pages of the book. 2. This is related to the first con. I like all the tips about scouring eBay and Craigslist for textiles, but so much of what's in the book is off-limits to those of us on a tight budget. (student loans, anyone?) Why yes, let me just put some custom wood-paneling on my refrigerator! I hope a more budget-savvy designer scopes Blakeney's book and gets the idea to do a truly budget-friendly sister to this book that is for those of us who live a bohemian lifestyle more akin to the one Blakeney sets out in her introduction! In the meantime, I'll busy myself with some of these cute projects--Blakeney should do a book full of those!

Beautiful and inspirational book.

Wow, what a gorgeous book. The description says author Blakeney features her favorite homes from "across the country"...but really most of the homes are in California and New York, with a small handful from Oregon, Texas, and New Mexico. No matter, though, because all of the homes here are phenomenal. The book is divided into six parts, each part covering a different bohemian style: modern, earthy, folksy, nomadic, romantic, and maximal. But, really, all the homes have a lot in common. They are playful, colorful, whimsical, and chock full of personality. Some lean toward minimalism and others are stuffed to the gills, but I loved each and every one. It helps, too, that the book quality and photo spreads are stunning--really vibrant and inspirational. (After reading this book, I've decided our house needs about twice the number of plants it currently has...) But I especially love how this book made me feel affirmed in our decision to decorate, furnish, and design our new home slowly. It takes time to build layers that are meaningful and reflect who we are. Sometimes I feel pressure to rush that process, since, hello, after a year in this house, we still don't have a coffee table in our living room... But now I'm feeling a little bit more calm and confident. I'm glad we are taking our time to find pieces that we love. At any rate, I loved this book. It is beautiful to look at and helpful to read. I know I'll be returning to it again and again.

Inspiration for Seniors who fear that downsizing means letting go of what you love and who you are

My New Bohemians came right n tme. This book is not just for creative singles, couples and families with kids. It's also inspirational for us seniors. With all the kids grown and gone We are downsizing from a wonderful funky old tumble down house to a smaller kinda sterile condo. Next week. The new bohemians came right on time to inspire me (and even spouse) to take "us" with us, to make the place our own with color and plants, textiles and textures...to take the old worn leather sofa whose every stain comes with a story, and to spark the sterile with DIY bling. Even old bohemians can be reignited by this new bohemians book. Blakeney is a genius, and Dabitos fotos are super inviting. Justina's descriptions are a joy to read, and easy Adopt an idea notions give all of us hope, at every stage of life.

Great book for ideas.

I bought this book because I've been working on decorating our home and I love bohemia. While it does give some great ideas to use and beautiful pictures for further inspiration, most everything seemed to be on the costly side. For those of us who don't have a lot of disposable income this is discouraging. I'll be keeping an eye out for a book with more affordable ideas.

Excellent 2020 Modern Boho book! Great price! Must buy!

Each home has a different boho flair. The author has a excellent “Boho” perspective is on point and makes the book an educational. In the book the author specifically highlights “boho” descriptions of different homes across the country including people who are living a modern bohemian life. I hope it helps you decide to purchase or not.

Fun and Eco - Friendly Funky Style

Very colorful and well laid out book illustrating how simple or complicated boho decor can be - from homes with tons of natural materials and funky design elements like plants hanging in an almost outdoor shower, to serene white panels and fabric strewn rooms on walls, floors, and furniture - this book can be overwhelming for some - or like me a TON of ideas and color scheme madness. I like how each home has such unique characteristics - and how you can design some simple items to pull some boho into your current design based on a freedom and willingness to let your true spirit be shown in how you chose to live in your "playhouse." I will have to check out more of Ms. Blakeney's style in other books...very fun and eco-friendly..

This book delivered but doesn’t lie flat

Awesome book. Great layout and wonderful ideas. I’d love to see her do another book for those of us who are not wealthy so we can see what this style looks like with lower priced items more generally available than from world travel. But the book is beautiful, and inspirational, and I do love it. My one pet peeve is that you cannot open this book and have it lay flat. So it’s always a struggle to study the pages or read them without one or both hands on the book itself to keep it open. After awhile, it gets tiring. But don’t let that stop you from buying it. It’s a good book.

OH MY GOODNESS...

This book takes me back to the 70s...when I was young and decorating my first apartment! It was a time of the "hippie" generation and I recall plenty of color, plants, wicker and casual comfort. I had very limited funds back then and this bohemian style was easy to achieve on a budget. It would still be a great way to decorate without breaking the bank. I have more money to spend on home decor these days, but I still love this look and have mixed it in with more pricey pieces...it really makes my house less serious and more fun for me and everyone that visits. This book is chock full of quirky, fun ideas that will lead open minded people to mix things up a little bit. This look is great if you love flea markets, auctions or estate sales. It also gives the collector plenty of ideas to creatively display their treasures. I can't recommend this book enough...this is one that I will display prominently on my coffee table and refer to often. So glad I purchased this...it was money well spent!

Justina Blakeney's style is perfect and it shows through her book

Firstly I love Justina, if you've ever seen or follow her blog the Jungalow it is so great! The book is a great look into tons of real homes of real people and is great to inspire some ideas. I though that it may have more writing in the book, a little bit more details on how to affectively create your own Jungalow but the photo's are amazing, they're done by Dabito, who's insta is also great to look at and scan through. That's the main reason why I bought this book. I love Dabito's photos and I love Justina's style. A great addition to the book is a plant guide in the back of the book. Like of course you need that, you're trying to create a jungalow! I thought that was a nice addition. I don't think it's a book you'll keep coming back to for reference but it is nice to sit quietly and look at all the photos for some time.

A beautiful inspiration board for creatives.

We recently bought a farmhouse in upstate NY so we needed inspiration for decorating it. After some Internet search I purchased about 4 great books on home decor, and this one (The New Bohemians) has become a favorite. Through the book I got to find Justina Blakeney's blog. What I like about the book, which is a reflexion of Justina's personality, is that it has a self-confident and unique voice. This book is not only about houses and how they look, but about the people who live in them. That makes it special because houses are nothing without people. The New Bohemians is some sort of inspiration board for creatives. It's an invitation to be yourself and be fearless when it comes to making of your home an extension of who you truly are. Here is a line from the Introduction that I enjoyed: "It is my strong belief that wealth is not the key to having an amazing home and an incredible lifestyle - the key is inside you; it's your own creativity and being in an environment in which you're allowed to openly express it." I want to add that the book itself is a beautiful object. It feels nice and heavy in your hands (it weights about 3 lb) and it is about 8 3/4 wide, 10 3/4 tall and a little bit over 1 inch thick. The photographs (by Dabito) are gorgeous, as well as the endpaper design (by Monica Ramos). I recommend this book to the free-spirited type or person who appreciates beauty and creative expression. But I also recommended it to the uptight person who's a little bit afraid of expressing her/his own personality. You will feel inspired by the families featured by Justina. Thanks, Justina, for putting together this beautiful book and thanks a lot also to the people who shared their spaces.

It's OK

I ordered this book and another, "The Maverick Soul" at the same time. If you are looking for a book showing truly unique interiors, order the latter. While "The New Bohemians" is colorful and interesting, many of the interiors seem the same - lots of suzanis and kanthas. "The Maverick Soul" is much more layered and the photography is beautiful.

I guess Bohemian means anything goes anywhere

Don’t waste your money. Furniture and accessories were just put randomly wherever. A mishmash of stuff, placed with no thought as to any kind of plan. Thank goodness I didn’t buy this book new. Very disappointed, any one of us could have written this book, perhaps much better.

Love This Book!

I read this book from cover to cover and then did it again. I really enjoyed the descriptions and especially appreciate the DIY projects that are so inspiring at the end of each chapter. Beautiful pictures of creative people!

Awesome book

I recently had to decorate a home for Airbnb with a low budget and what can I say, this book was a life saver! It gives you tons of ideas to decorate in a cool but cheap bohemian style. The results on my home were amazing I always get compliments I got a stylish result without spending that much.

The perfect coffee table book you can flip open for inspiration ...

The perfect coffee table book you can flip open for inspiration and aspiration. I ordered this along with Justina's latest book, the handbook, and have them displayed together. This book profiles a nice mix of Bohemian homeowners from all walks of life, some may be more accessible than others. Worth picking up if you're decorating your home and want ideas or just admire Justina's Jungalow style aesthetic- or both.

Such a beautiful coffee table book

Such a beautiful coffee table book. I have been following Justina Blakeney on IG for a while and I just love her pictures and her style! This book does not disappoint. However, what other people have said is true, the book starts with an intro on what being a bohemian means (decorating with what you have, being creative, even when you are broke) but a lot of the pictures in the book feature fancier homes, people who have lots of money to invest in decor.

Lovely book

This is a great pictoral book. Very interesting looking at styles foreign to me. I can't seem to let it go. I look at it periodically and when presented to others, it stimulates conversation.

Fun book - full of interesting homes of interesting people

Fun book - full of interesting homes of interesting people. There were very few pictures that inspired me however as I found them too cluttered and messy for my liking but I did enjoy the DIY's included in the book and a few photos. My favorite home was the one that had the white walls and closet doors replaced with beautifully carved wood screens (imported from Bali, I think).

Love this book

Love this book...I've been wanting it for ages and I got it for Christmas. I was not disappointed. Haven't been able to put it down since. I look at it everyday. It's gorgeous, visually stunning would probably be a better description....every single page. I am absolutely obsessed with everything that Justina Blakeney creates. She's truly a genius.

OK but not what the cover promises

The cover is the best picture in this book !!!

Bohemian Dream Book!

Wow! All of those boho homes are so inspiring – Mileece's airstream shower is a dream! Can't wait to get Justina's new book when it comes out!!!

I had wanted this book for a couple of years now, and finally bought it. Lots of eye candy and inspiration and is full of wonderful pictures. Worth every penny I spent.

Discover the Bohemian in you!

Love the book. Better than I expected. I thought I only liked white and shabby chic and pale colors until I read this book. I have more Bohemian than I thought in me.

Love this book!

Love love love this book! It gives a lot of different boho style ideas! I haven't had the chance to read the whole book, but I have looked all the way through and can't wait to dig in!

Very current and creative. I bought this for my ...

Very current and creative. I bought this for my 30 year old daughter and asked to borrow it for a couple of weeks. She politely suggested I get my own copy and I think I might!

Good book

Great pictures and looks nice on the shelf.

Beautiful Boho Style❤️.

I love this book. The photos are beautiful and feature a lot of ideas anyone can apply. The writing is fun and descriptive. I adore this book.

Five Stars

Beautiful pictures, just wished that she would have incorporated people of color. Bohemians are from all walks of life.

great book!

I just love the inspiration received from this book, so many ideas it's hard to know where to start. Thanks,

Great introductory into Bohemian interiors

Very nice summary on Bohemian style - The different examples showcase a nice variety of style and the crafts at the back are simple enough for a beginner and yet some are interesting enough for an old Bohemian like me to try. I am recommending it to my students.

Great little book!

A fun boho book, timeless style.

Incredible book

Best coffee table book !! Incredible photos

Fantastic

Wow, what a great book. I gave this to my brother for his birthday and he absolutely loved it. So many great ideas delivered in a beautiful manner.

Best author of the Bohemian decorating style

Both Justina's books are fantastic! She has the gift of helping her readers cultivate their own sense of decorative creativity through shared inspiration.

Inspirational

A great collection of different types of bohemian decorating styles. How do I figure out which one I am. Will be an interesting journey. I especially loved the plants section at the rear of the book. I’m of to the plant shop tomorrow to start my collection.

Coffee table book

Cool book. Very nice eye candy. Don't expect instructions or anything.

Five Stars

love the end of chapter tips and ideas and instructions on how to make your own.

Colorful and interesting styles.

Love the colorful blending of various eclectic styles in the different houses. Lots of ideas to draw from for my own home. Condition of book was good as new and delivery was prompt.

nice!

Love this book. Second one bought- this time for a friend. Beautiful photos and full of ideas.

Cute book with lots of great design ideas

Cute book with lots of great design ideas. So of the profiles are a little cheesy though. If you can get past that you will enjoy it!

not truly boho

this book uses the term spirit animal a lot. if you don't mind that, maybe it's okay for you. as one who has ties to indigenous ways and peoples, it makes me cringe.

Justina's eye and vision is clearly defined in this book and I am inspired by her writings and feel like I am stepping into these homes personally

This book has opened my eyes to print and pattern mixing on a whole new level. Justina's eye and vision is clearly defined in this book and I am inspired by her writings and feel like I am stepping into these homes personally. With Justina's editorial eye and Dabito's photography this book is a great conversation starter and perfect addition to any coffee table. Definitely a must have!

Artistic expression beyond the status quo

I think this is a wonderful book on eclectic style and 'bohemian experience within an white, primarily west coast context. I wish it was more representative of 'classic' bohemia, which, would have been infinitely more inclusive of class, culture and race. There were no Midwestern or Deep South representations of bohemian lifestyle and given the amazing richness and diversity of the US and expressly, African, Traditional American and Asian culture that this aesthetic draws upon, I expected better representation of a bohemian lifestyle.

Love this book

I love this book so much! Such great photos!!!!

Perfecto..

Muy buen estado Gracias..

Great decor ideas!!!

Super super great ideas!!! It’s a slow process but it’s coming together thanks to these ideas!!!!

Love It! - New Bohemians

Picked-up many new design concepts and enjoyed the beautiful photos.

Absolutely Indispensable

I am not a decorator or a crafty person or one who collects design books. I bought this book because I just moved into a new apartment and I needed inspiration and ideas, and the homes in this book remind me of the kinds of homes I was raised in and around (we own yurts in Oregon--I'll say no more). But an apartment in Queens, NY feels a long way, not just geographically, but aesthetically and spiritually far away, from my warm colorful homeland. Not only did this book inspire me, it made me feel like I could bring the rustic childhood homes that I miss so dearly right into my freshly painted Queens apartment. It has given me permission to do what I was going to do anyway, which is to cultivate my usual eclectic surroundings, but it has also helped me do it in a new and more thoughtful and more passionate way. So far, my apartment is coming along beautifully, and every day, using many of the ideas and aesthetic principles I've found in this book, I am able to make it more and more the kind of space I want to live in. And like other reviewers, I just love to open it again and again, sometimes reading chapters, sometimes just drinking up the gorgeous photographs, always thinking how it was worth every penny. It also makes a fabulous coffee table book, but that's just a bonus benefit on top of all the other great benefits this book has brought into my life!

Beautiful photos

Beautiful book. May not care for Some of the actual homes featured, but that doesn’t take away from the intent of narrative.

Go Bohemian

I love Justina's blog so it's no surprise that her book would be beautiful. Great design ideas, gorgeous pictures. Looks great on my coffee table.

Bohemian at its Absolute Best!

It's absolutely fabulous! I've decorated this way my whole life, but wanted a sort of "compendium" of stellar Boho design. I'm re-working and refining my space and this GORGEOUS book has been a joy to stimulate my own creative home re-vamp projects. I also love it as a wonderful coffee table book, and friends delight at perusing through its decadent pages as well. It's also structured fabulously, with interesting interviews (and great tidbits) with each person whose home is featured -and I'm digging that the book features these actual homes instead of style examples not from real, lived-in dwellings. Additionally, you've got people sharing lifestyle philosophies, not simply design... though the book has an absolute overflow of STELLAR images as well. Sooooo worth every penny and then some!!!

Pretty pics

I really like this book. It has given me several great ideas for laid back styling and I refer back to it often....though much of the content is floating around Pinterest anyway.

Great design ideas

My artist/interior design daughter LOVES this book. Keeps on coffee table. She just "missed the cut" being featured in this book so it is her style.

Best book on decorating I've ever purchased!

This was one of the best books I have ever purchased. Finally I've found my "tribe" and kindred spirits and know I'm not the only one who loves this style of decor. I've read it and drooled over it many times since receiving it and will continue to do so. Major eye candy and great ideas, some of which I have already modified and put into use. It not only shows you what to do, it frees and inspires you to do things your way and be at peace that it is perfect simply because you like it and it reflects your heart and soul.

Such a beautiful book, some really gorgeous photos, perfect for the coffee table. There's also quite an in depth guide to plants in the back, which was a nice surprise.

Pretty cocktail table book

Everyone who picks it up remarks on it!

A Beautiful Book With a Unique View of Boho

There are a lot of 'bohemian' approaches presented in this book. Although I'm not sure I'd classify them all that way, it is an interesting way to look at these options. Most rooms are far less colorful or eclectic than the cover, so if you are looking for that typical ethnic, myriad of patterns/colors boho look you will find it a bit lacking. After a bit of initial disappointment in that I took a deeper look at the book...and I do love it. It presents many different looks..although nothing is especially groundbreaking..they are all worth consideration and I liked the style of presentation as well as writing.

Highly recommend ❤️

JUST AS DESCRIBED!

Such a fun and inspiring resource!

I've followed Justina's and Dabito's blogs for a few years now, and was so excited when they decided to create a book. It does not disappoint! The photos are beautifully done, and the content of the book is very thoughtfully laid out. The end product really speaks to the time that was invested in this project, as everything from the paper stock to the charming drawings on the inside cover feel intentional and convey quality. This book is so inspiring, I read it cover to cover and now enjoy picking it up before bed and perusing for inspiration. It's just so fun to look through. Even if every featured home isn't your style or a smidge too quirky, they are full of great ideas that can easily be adapted to your personal needs and tastes. I've enjoyed it so much that I just picked up a second copy as a gift for a creative friend, and I know she'll love it. I've always been the type of person who immediately thinks about reusing, repurposing, refinishing or making something rather than buying new, and it's wonderful to see there's so many of us out there. Bohemianism is having a moment, and I'm all in!

How to blend patterns.

Fun! I love this! Great ideas.

For the Cool and Collected Bohemians

I can't believe it, but Amazon knows me better than my friends. Okay, I either need new friends or it's just me. Back to the book. I will keep it simple and too the point. Ah-May-Zing. In my opinion, it's on par and better than the blog and web site, which is saying quite a lot. Quite a few bloggers I have followed turned out rather disappointing books. As for the book, many, many picts that are drool worthy pictures (better yet, can't be repeated from one of a kind homes)and, best yet, text to the point, informational and minimal. It's a welcome addition to my library.

Great, quality paper and the photographs are stunning.

Lots of good ideas for many degrees of "boho"

Very interesting and I liked all of it except the last part, which was about the rooms with "maximal" boho design, as it's just too cluttered for me. But the other sections were very helpful in achieving a bit of boho design without going overboard. I got quite a few ideas and have started to incorporate some of them. The resources weren't very helpful, however, as the ones I checked out online were very high-priced stores. Too rich for my blood. Others may like them however.

Can I live inside this book?

Pleasures unfold from the pages of this book for me over and again.

Oh yes! Now I know exactly what my style is. Bohemian! Thank you Justina Blakeney. I really enjoyed this book, devoured it in a day. Love the variety of looks of the Bohemian home, and love the color. It is so refreshing to see this style after endless blah, bland, gray, beige, boring interiors so favored in design magazines these days. Love this book. Best interior design book ever!

and more comfortable. Lots of color

This is a really neat book!! Heavy papers, all color photographs, lots of tips on making some projects that make your place look so different and Really Bohemian. Maybe more you? I look around this house and see a whole lot of things I could do and make to have a place that is more me, and more comfortable. Lots of color, more plants, bring out some of the goodies I put away that I collect, and fabric!! Wow, I have some unusual pieces of fabric. I'm on my way to original!

Inspired, vibrant style for the adventurous in spirit

This book is a captivating look at the homes of 20 creative people. It is full of charm, invention and color. The color photographs are full of detail. The author identifies six different kinds of Bohemians and gives examples in the homes of real people. There is much inspiration here, regardless of your personal style. If you are looking for a different way to look at creating a vibrant, personal home, this book will give you a lot to think about.

The book is okay, but honestly, nothing special, imho. I personally don't think she's doing something any number of bohemians couldn't do...take some pictures, throw some ideas in there...you get the gist. All in all, an okay coffee table book.

Fantastic book

Wonderful

Best Mother's Day Gift for every Generation!

I purchased 6 copies of this new book for all of my daughters, son's girlfriend's and their moms for Mother's Day. Everyone was delighted with them and it is so much fun to see them populating classy to classic coffee tables from Highland Park to the Pacific Palisades to Long Beach. Justina has done a great job mixing photos with practical advice and giving voice to this new-again movement. I loved this!

Beautiful pics and great ideas!

Love this book. Total eye candy. So many great ideas. I didn't know the name for my style until now. I am a proud Bohemian! Anyone interested in eclectic home décor will enjoy this book.

Great ideas and looks good on my coffee table too!

I love this book. I even bought a copy for my friend. It's VERY boho and most of the places featured in it are nothing like my home, but I still can get good ideas from it. It looks great on my coffee table too.

One Star

Very disappointed. Not really bohemian, and not at all inspiring.

Colorful fabulous book

wonderful photos and decorating ideas. there are some DIY instructions. this is a book you'll keep at easy reach to look at again and again. I only wish that they'd give you an idea on where to purchase some of these items.

Plants and Color and Imperfect Perfection

I love buying coffee table books about design and interiors and this is my favorite of all time. I loved it so much that I ordered one for my best friend. Now we text back and forth about which houses are our favorites-- which type of bohemian we are / wish we were. The photography is beautiful. It is full of the sorts of ideas that are easy and inexpensive to implement, although there are also plenty of big, amazing ideas scattered throughout that might make you dream. The book is to blame for a rather expensive nursery trip, so you might want to consider that before purchasing.

I really love thins book

I really love thins book, maybe more so a month after reading it cover to cover. I find myself still thinking about ideas captured in the book and even duplicating them. She also so many great tips and words of advice. My on,y gripe is the same gripe I have about almost all decorating books and articles: the houses are not really everyday houses by everyday people. Most were artists or decorators who professionally play with color and style everyday. I want to read about the non-artists and non-decorators/architects who have style especially since I'm a non-decorator, style person. But worth every penny.

Boho Inspiration Boost

I find myself noticing new inspiring embellishments and flourishes each time I open this wonderful decor book. It fills my boho heart and mind with DIY dreams and projects!

I love this book!!

Highly recommend this book if you love the Boho look. If you are like me, you may have been living this style for years and just didn't know what to call it...my kids call it hippy...now we know! :)

Five stars.

Great book. I love Justina Blakeney and her style of decorating.

Must buy for interior lovers, even if you're just a little bit boho.

I am absolutely loving this book! I'm reading it cover to cover and I am only halfway through but I love the way Justina writes and love to be able to peek inside all those different unique homes. Surely, not all of them are exactly my style but they are ispiring!

Awesome book filled with pictures and how to's!

Must have for for the decorator at heart. Love the illustrations and suggestions. Easy tips how to duplicate a look make this a must have item! Highly recommended! Place it on your coffee table and you will find out how much you enjoy looking thru it.... Unlike most other boring decor books. :-)

Design Eye Candy

You know how sometimes when you buy a new book from a blogger you have a crush on, and the book just isn't as good as the blog itself? Well, this is NOT one of those instances. I am in design-love with Justina Blakeney, so I already knew I'd love the overall aesthetic of the book, but it's even more beautiful than I thought. It's total and utter curated eye candy. The book itself is pretty big and thick, so it looks and feels important. The print quality is exceptional. The photos are inspiring, yet approachable and warm. My husband and I just bought a new house and can't wait to use some of the ideas in this book as inspiration!

New Bohemianism

Of course I like it. Ms Blakeney is on to something...There is new aesthetic movement aborning in quest of a quite radical authenticity, a simple and messy cheerfulness and brightness, in violent opposition to all that was brought to us by the 'mad men' and modernism of the past 6 decades. A lack of severity. Breaking the mold. I am reminded of the Expressionists who lived by lakes in Southern Germany...Murnau.

Five Stars

good price

Two Stars

Book is hard to open pages well to read or look at pictures. Cheaply made.

I wanted to love this book

I wanted to love this book. I really did. I am a big fan of Justina's pins on Pinterst.com and I thought the idea of this book was genius. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. There are way too many pictures and they are way too small. Because the interiors are so ornate, it doesn't work to put so many photos on a single page. I also don't love it when interior design books show random closeups of specific details. Unless these "still lives" are artfully arranged, they are pointless. Finally, the overall size of the book could have been bigger and the binding could have been higher quality. Maybe this was the "retro" effect that was intended, but I felt like I was holding one of those cheap hardback books from high school, the kind about the history of dinosaurs or world geography. I hope she does another book, one that truly showcases her incredible eye for bohemian design.

Five Stars

LOVE this book, very inspiring.....it was just what I hoped for..... x

Not the best

Quite a disappointment -- way too much writing and few photos.

Five Stars

i love it; full of inspiration!

Not what I'd hoped it would be

This book showed some interesting living quarters but nothing was really exciting or innovative and, although the chapter titles suggested different approaches, they all seemed somewhat alike.

Four Stars

Loveky book with lots of inspiration for a beautiful home.

For The Bohemian in You!

Justina Blakeney is a young and energetic designer...a bohemian herself and a part of a collective called the Cultural Creatives. As an older designer, I love to read what the younger people are doing and she doesn't disappoint. Blakeney shows us 20 "Bohemian" homes and divides them into 5 categories: 1. Modern: clean and functional 2. Folksy: art and objects with history/ancestral 3. Romantic: sweet 4. Nomadic: tons of colors and fabrics 5. Maximal: all of the above The author emphasizes creativity in designing your home. She advocates to feel free to do what feels good to you and have fun doing it. Forget rules...in fact, the point of having the 5 styles of bohemian is to help the reader see what resonates and how creative you can be in your home. What I really liked about the books is that it is more than just (great!) photos...She includes tips, DIY projects, inexpensive ideas to turn one thing into something else. She also focuses on both how the home looks overall and then captures sweet vignettes. This is a book for those who need a little push to feel free in how they decorate, as well as a source of inspiration. As a designer who gets that many readers prefer DIY to hiring someone, I would recommend Design Sponge and Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify & Energize Your Life, Your Home & Your Planet as companions to The New Bohemians. Great job!
