Nature lovers and poetry fans alike will be drawn to this lyrical picture book depicting how Carolina wrens build a nest for their young.

This is the bark, snippets of twine,
spidery rootlets, and needles of pine
that shape the nest that Wren built.

In the rhyming style of “The House That Jack Built,” this poem about the care and specificity that Carolina wrens put into building a nest is at once tender and true to life. Papa and Mama Wren gather treasures of the forest, from soft moss for a lining to snakeskin for warding off predators. Randi Sonenshine’s lilting stanzas, woven with accurate and unexpected details about Carolina wrens, and Anne Hunter’s gentle, inviting illustrations reveal the mysterious lives of these birds and impart an appreciation for the wonder of the life cycles around us. Back matter includes a glossary and additional interesting facts about wrens.

LOVE everything about this book!

This is a BEAUTIFUL book. A lovely rendition of "The House That Jack Built", but brought to a natural setting. The language is lyrical and a perfect thing to read at bed time. But- it also has a wonderful educational component that makes it perfect for the classroom setting or great to read before going on a nature walk with kids. And, of course, it features WRENS! My favorite bird. :) Two thumbs way up high!

Beautiful illustrations

With a granddaughter named Wren what choice did I have but to buy it as a gift for her? I love to read aloud to her and the lilting cadence is so lovely and musical. She is a bit too young yet but we read it occasionally just for the beauty of the language. As she gets older she will appreciate it more for the story and the illustrations.

Gorgeous lyrical rhyme

Wren builds a nest for her family in this beautiful book. This is the type of book we could read again and again and never grow tired of it. A beautifully illustrated book with a great story. I bought this book for my daughter, Wren. It is a favorite of hers and mine. I also love that the story line includes factual information about wrens. This book will stay in our collection for many, many years!

Beautiful

Such a fun, educational and creative story! Beautiful illustrations and wonderful poetic style for story. Our kiddos loved hearing the story read by Randi Sonenshine- beautifully done- highly recommend for any age.

wonderful

great story will make a great coffee table book

Beautiful book.

Purchased for my granddaughter who’s middle name is Wren. I loved the beautiful illustrations and the interesting facts about wrens.

educational and lovely

THE NEST THAT WREN BUILT is a lovely journey through the process of building a nest to hatchlings who leave the nest. The book uses poetic language to describe the many steps along the way from twigs to spider egg sacks to snakeskin to tufts of rabbits fur and beyond. The book takes on an educational element in describing the things included in the nest as well as the reasons for their inclusion. The end of the book includes interesting facts to augment the learning experience. What I loved: The illustrations are elegant, like looking through an old field guide. The text is really lovely and poetic and it easily rolls off the tongue when read aloud. The text-to-picture ratio is ideal without any densely worded pages, and the font is clear and easy to read. The inclusion of factual steps with reasons behind them all the way through to the eggs and hatchlings who live in the nest presents a great learning opportunity with sequential order, facts about birds, and details about nature. This would be a great book in a classroom setting with plenty of things to learn and beautiful illustrations to admire. There are plenty of activities that could arise such as imagining how children would build their nests, adding to the poem (imagining what would come next), etc. This would be great picture book to spark discussion among young learners. Final verdict: Educational and lovely, THE NEXT THAT WREN BUILT is a great learning experience through the process of building a nest through to the birds who are born there. Highly recommend in a classroom setting and/or just to explore and learn at home. Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Lyrical delight and scientific accuracy. What more could you want in a children’s book?

Sonenshine gives rhyming books a good name! No forced rhymes, every word used cleverly, no wasted words. Her stanzas are packed with interesting facts without making the reader feel overwhelmed. Simply delightful! Here’s my favorite phrase: “This is the tuft of rabbity fur, plucked from a sharp, persnickety burr to warm the nest that Wren built.” That single line tells me that rabbit fur is a valuable find, that the rabbit lost the fur from a burr that likely irritated him, and that the fur now gives another creature its warmth. More phrases like these will delight the ear and make bird discoveries remember-able: “snippets of twine,” “spidery rootlets,” “needles of pine,” “leaves of ruby and gold… sturdy and old,”· “These are the feathers, petals, and thread placed on the moss to soften the bed that waits in the nest that Wren built.” Did you know that wrens bring in spider eggs to keep their babies safe from the mites those hatching spiders will eat? Did you know wrens add a snakeskin to make bird predators runaway from the snake that’s not really there? Did you know nests have layers? You and your children will find so many did-you-knows to share. When your children say, “A bird’s nest! Look! It’s a bird’s nest!!” this book will answer many of their questions and inspire more. How did it get there? How long will it stay? What do its eggs look like? How long until we see babies? How do the babies get out of the eggs? How long do babies stay in the nest? What does the mama bird do? What does the papa bird do? What’s funny about a wren that other birds don’t do? The Nest That Wren Built is critical to your bird book collection.

Where to star with this delightfu,l spring book

Where should I start with this delightful, spring book? Sonenshine's cumulative text (a la "The House That Jack Built") is the perfect way to tell the cumulative story of nest building. Sonenshine's details are so concrete, her word choice so unexpected, for example: "This is the tuft of rabbity fur,/plucked from a sharp, persnickety burr..." Students will be captivated by these intriguing details, including a snakeskin draped as a decoration and a spider sac included to ward off mites. The backmatter includes a glossary and further explanation of Carolina wren nest-building. Finally, illustrator Anne Hunter's soft sketches include so many delightful details of their own. Each spread is a seek-and-find, filled with insects and other creatures for students to discover.

Perfect springtime book

Nature lovers will enjoy this sweet springtime book about Carolina wrens. A mama and papa wren prepare a nest for the newborn hatchlings about to arrive. Papa hunts for food for the newborn once the hatchlings arrive so that they are strong enough to fledge in just 14 days after their birth. Although this book uses some words that might be unfamiliar to a PRE-K-7 year old: rootling, fledgling, burr, spider sac and more, there is a nice glossary at the end of the book with some fun facts about wrens that I thought was well done. The book is beautifully and intricately detailed. I loved the earth tone illustrations. A perfect spring time choice.

A familiar rhyme with an ornithological twist!

A soothing and beautiful book in both words and pictures. The Nest that Wren Built is a lyrical journey of how Carolina Wrens build their nests and nourish their fledglings until they are ready to fly on their own, based on the familiar nursery rhyme, The House that Jack Built. Sonenshine’s poetry is lyrical and evocative and perfectly expresses the care and particulars of wrens building a nest – from the soft moss lining the nest to the snakeskin decoration warding off predators. Hunter’s soft illustrations are gentle and warm, and I especially loved the warmth of the cream-colored background. The back matter is very informative, including a glossary and Wren Facts. I loved learning more about wren’s and how they build their nests. It was a hoot to discover that the male builds several dummy nests to attract a mate, only to have the female dismantle the dummy while scolding the male so they can build their own nest together. Highly recommended for young nature lovers and backyard bird fans.

Cozy classic picture book about building a bird nest

Sweet as a song and full of unforgettable detail, "The Nest That Wren Built" is a story about how wrens pair, nest and raise their baby birds. This approachable tale is focused, beautifully paced, and full of interesting facts - from the female birds destruction and rebuilding of the nest, to some of the unlikely, yet purposeful, adornments (spider eggs, snake skin). The warm, earthy palette and soft precise markings align perfectly with the gentle, active rhyme, resulting in a cozy classic.

This lyrical story about the ingenious Carolina wrens with enchant readers of every age!!

This gorgeous lyrical story about the industrious and ingenious Carolina wrens will enchant readers of every age. Carolina wrens are extremely resourceful when creating their nests. They go to great lengths and awe-inspiring care to provide a loving home to their young. Hunter’s warm and tender illustrations complement Sonenshine’s deft and poetic words that dance across the pages in rhyme reminiscent of The House that Jack Built. Themes of kindness, resourcefulness, and love of family are present throughout. The back matter provides additional information about the Carolinas wrens and their habitats. This beautiful story will leave readers inspired and longing to learn more about the amazing Carolina wrens.

Absolute Perfection

Who knew that reading about Carolina wrens could be such a treat? Randi Sonenshine, that's who. I love everything about this book, the soft illustrations with their muted palette, the absolutely divine lyrical text, even the back matter pulled me in! Fascinating details about the construction of the nest such as the use of snakeskin as a charm for protection, and spider sacs and fur plucked from a persnickety burr, all add to the delight of this reading experience. Can't recommend The Nest That Wren Built highly enough!

gentle and lyrical language

This book invites you in with gentle and lyrical language. At first glance, the book is a detailed description of wrens building their nest. At closer look, it is about the cycle of life in the family of wrens: from building the nest to having offsprings to them leaving the nest. The description of building materials are full of sensory details like “velvety moss” and “warm in the nest wren built.” The illustrations are done in soft textured warm earth tones.

Beautiful through and through!

A gorgeous cumulative text in the style of "The House that Jack Built," this picture book allows us to accompany the mama and papa wrens as they craft their lovely nest. Readers will delight in learning all of the nest "ingredients" and will be fascinated by the stunning illustrations. A must-have for all nature lovers, this book belongs in homes, libraries, and classrooms.

Fascinating book and great read aloud

We already know from the title what this book will be about, and as the story unfolds, the wren couple builds their nest piece-by-interesting-piece. This is further supplemented by enlightening back matter. I found it fascinating and children will too. The rhyming cumulative text is stunning and makes this a great read-aloud for younger children who will want parents to read it over and over again. The detailed illustrations suit the subject matter and story perfectly, encouraging children to pore over the pages.

Deserves every star it’s earned and maybe a few more!

This is a stellar example of how non-fiction should engage the reader. Sonenshine’s lyrical prose has a wonderful beat that takes the reader from the first twig to the baby birds leaving The Nest That Wren Built. Absolutely brilliant. Oh, and there’s a little treasure hidden on each page. Can you find it?

Stunning illustrations, beautiful story

Oh, what a treasure! This is a gentle, lyrical story inspired by "The House that Jack Built" that beautifully shares the story of a Wren family. The illustrations are soft and tender and lovingly show these birds in relationship with their environment. We found this to be a creative and engaging way to explore a nonfiction topic. My children especially appreciated the extra facts at the end of the book. Thank you, Ms. Sonenshine.

Beautiful. Familiar. True. A new classic!

The Nest That Wren built is a gorgeous telling of an age old story: a mother bird and her nest. The familiar rhyme paired with the beautiful illustrations will make this book a new classic for sure! My kids and I love watching the birds build nests in our ferns every year. This book is a treasure that our family will enjoy reading over and over again.

Delightful

Beautifully illustrated and delightfully rhymed, this follows a nesting pair of wrens as they build their nest and raise their chicks. The rhyming is as tightly woven as the wrens' brilliantly constructed nest. It's rare to find such a wonderful read-aloud that is also suitable to support STEM. Perfect for teachers to use in the classroom, but sure to be a favorite for home libraries as well.

A gorgeous read for anytime

Lush language, unexpected details, and inviting illustrations make this a versatile choice for story time, STEM learning, or bedtime. Delightfully informative, impeccably rhymed, and cleverly structured on the foundation of the class The House That Jack Built.

Lovely, literary picture book

This is such a beautiful picture book, told with a lovely literary tone and illustrated with a natural palette. I particularly enjoyed reading the Wren Facts and learning more about this sweet bird. The rhythm of the story is gentle and warm, making it a lovely book to snuggle up with your little ones in your lap.

Fun to read aloud

This beautiful book has impeccable rhythm and rhyme and is fun to read aloud. There are such fascinating tidbits - like the use of the snake skin to deter predators - that my 4 year old was really intrigued by. The brief back matter is also so interesting and masterfully done.

Flawless!

All Around Excellent Read

Lyrical text and beautiful illustrations that depict how wrens build nests for their young. So many ways to integrate this one into classroom learning. After reading this book, we were inspired to create our own play dough bird nests. Looking forward to rereading and including in future homeschool lessons!

Beautiful book

Wonderful rhymes AND we all learned a lot about wrens and how they build their nests. Beautiful illustrations by Anne Hunter. A favorite in our collection.

The needlefine verse and illustrations compliment each other perfectly.

I've been really looking forward to this book about the Carolina wrens, and I wasn't disappointed. It's just gorgeous - from the lovely, enchanting lines of verse to the warm, delicate earthy illustrations. Can't recommend it more!

Mesmerizing text and illustrations

Such a beautiful book! The lyrical text and detailed illustrations make you want to keep turning the pages. The back matter was interesting and surprising.

Gorgeous lyrical rhyme and intriguing STEM backmatter make this a wonderful teaching tool. Every word in this book is beautiful. Perfect not only for bird lovers but anyone who loves a good picture book.

Beautiful book!

I love this book. I just read it to my grandson who is interested in nature, and he was mesmerized. The simple, but beautifully crafted rhyme kept him engaged, and it also made him want to learn more. Any poetry or nature lover will enjoy this lovely book. Both the text and illustrations are gorgeous.

Just love these little wrens!

I adore both the lyrical, rhyming text by author Randi Sonenshine and the gorgeous illustrations by Anne Hunter. Perfect together. Really enjoyed the glossary and fun wren facts at the end of this beautiful book. Everyone will delight in THE NEST THAT WREN BUILT!

A real winner

My friend Randi has written a beautiful book with lyrical text and illustrations that enhance the story. "Spidery rootlets" and " a scaly and thin reptilian charm" are just two of the phrases that paint word picturel. A perfect blend of text and illustrations.

Great for big and little kids alike!

The Nest That Wren Built is my new baby gift to parents. The book is beautifully illustrated and the writing is crisp and alliterative. As a high school English teacher, I am also using the book for students to study as a mentor text for nonfiction fiction writing. Be sure to read the last pages. Here you will find all kinds of interesting facts about the amazing wren.

New favorite children’s classic

Echoing the previous reviews: lovely rhythmic writing making it fun to read and beautiful illustrations worthy of an art book. Not all new books for children are of this high caliber. Someday I might read this to a group of children at the library after I share with my grandsons!

wonderful book

This is a beautifully and realistically illustrated book. It is delightfully written and easy to read out loud. The story by itself is interesting. but the additional glossary and information contained at the end makes the young reader eager to find our more about birds and their nests. I highly recommend it.
