Kathy Caprino guides women to take the reins in their careers by identifying and overcoming the 7 most damaging power gaps holding them back and accessing new levels of internal and external power to propel you forward to the success you want and deserve.

The business world has been forever changed by the important progress and contributions that women have made. Yet, with only 38% of manager roles and 22% of C-suite positions being held by women, women continue to struggle to achieve the reward, respect, and authority they have earned.

In these pages, career, executive, and leadership coach Kathy Caprino helps women identify the 7 most damaging power gaps that are holding them back from the success they want and deserve, outlining the key steps you can take today to access greater positive power, become the true author of your life, and reach your highest and most rewarding goals.

Kathy has dedicated her work to the advancement of women in business. In her research, she has found that 98% of professional women are experiencing at least one of these seven damaging power gaps, and over 75% are facing 3 or more:

  • Power Gap 1: Not recognizing your special talents, abilities, and accomplishments
  • Power Gap 2: Communicating from fear, not strength
  • Power Gap 3: Reluctance to ask for what you deserve
  • Power Gap 4: Isolating from influential support
  • Power Gap 5: Acquiescing instead of saying “Stop!” to mistreatment
  • Power Gap 6: Losing sight of your thrilling dream for your life
  • Power Gap 7: Allowing past trauma and challenges to define you

Through riveting real-life success stories of women overcoming these gaps, and proven strategies and solutions from more than 30 of the nation’s top experts in fields that are essential to women’s success, the exercises in this book will equip you with the strength to:

  • See yourself more powerfully (Brave Sight)
  • Speak more confidently (Brave Speak)
  • Ask for and receive what you deserve (Brave Ask)
  • Connect to your advantage with influential support (Brave Connection)
  • Challenge and change negative behavior toward you (Brave Challenge)
  • Be of service in more meaningful ways (Brave Service)
  • Heal from past trauma and challenge (Brave Healing)

Most importantly, The Most Powerful You will reconnect you to the thrilling dreams you once had for your life and empower you to take the necessary steps to reclaim that dream while making your positive impact in the world.

Both women and men will benefit from this book, and so will leaders who want to increase impact

Both women and men will benefit a great deal from this book, as well as leaders who want to make a greater positive impact. The 7 power gaps that the book shares are not only what I see many of female leaders, students and others I work with are experiencing that are blocking their success, but also among professional men as well. In fact, there are several gaps that I'm experiencing that from this book I understand more clearly how to tackle and address to create more of the impact I'm hoping for. Highly recommended!

A Must Read For Today's Professional Market

This book is a timely, highly effective call to action for one of the largest issues in our professional world -- the discrepancy between the contributions that women bring to the table and the recognition for that work. The thing I love most about The Most Powerful You is Kathy's emphasis on action. Too many "thought leaders" spend pages and chapters outlining the issue, but fail to deliver on tangible solutions and actions. Not this time! Kathy's chapters are jam packed with actionable value that readers can implement immediately. The best part? Kathy is laser focused on the gaps that, when shored up, will give you the most bang for your buck. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone looking to level up their career, regardless of your gender.

Are you seeking some powerful insights from an experienced and dynamic career coach whose voice sounds like it is talking to you? Then run, don't walk to get a hold of this terrific book by career coach and well known Finding Brave podcast host, Kathy Caprino. I especially loved the reframing and "power questions' that are included in each chapter. Many people talk a good game when it comes to empowering women. Kathy Caprino knows how to get it done.

Amazing Book for Self Reflection

Thank you for writing The Most Powerful You! It took me a couple of months to finish it as each chapter required lots of self reflection and internal analysis. I learned 2 things about myself from your book. 1) I needed to forgive myself in order to activate Brave Speak. I didn’t think I deserved a voice. Self forgiveness activated my self awareness allowing me to walk boldly in my strengths, connect with influential people, speak up to power. 2) I need to grieve the losses of what could have been as a result of the traumatic childhood I had. I spent a whole weekend listing all the losses and I grieved Now I’m a little my present, I celebrate wins, and I’m experiencing joy. New experiences for me and I’m loving it!!!!

As usual, well organized, great exercises

I loved Kathy's Breakdown, Breakthrough, and am a career and life coach. Her concepts resonate with me, and I appreciate her holistic and insightful approach to women come to their own power. Very helpful during a stressful time in the country and the world.

Not for Women Only, solid insight and advice

The Most Powerful You focuses on questions related to 'what is missing from the lives of working women who feel that they can't experience the joy, success, rewards and impact they deserve and want' (xii). The author Kathy Caprino is an executive coach. This book concentrates on the premise that what is missing is bravery and courage. Women who have that are able to experience a fuller and more meaningful jobs and careers. The seven braveries address so called power gaps that hold people back in general and women in particular. These power gaps are: 1) Not recognizing your special talents, abilities and accomplishments 2) Communicating from fear not strength 3) Reluctance to ask for what you deserve and want 4) Isolating from influential support 5) Acquiescing instead of saying 'stop' to mistreatment 6) Losing sight of your thrilling dream for your life 7) Allowing past trauma to define you Each of these chapters concentrates on a clear explanation of the power gap, an illustrative story and solid recommendations on how to fill in the gap. The advice is solid, if sometimes sounding a little clinical. It is also meaningful to everyone. This book is actionable, practical and positive. It is not an inditement of the current work environment, nor does it blame workplace challenges on others. Rather it does something unique in providing advice on how to move forward in an authentic and constructive manner. This book does not absolve the workplace from past abuses and horrid conditions, nor does it say just grin and bear it. Rather it asks you to take a look at yourself in order to recognize and correct situations where you feed the power gap. That is its greatest value.

"Others cannot make you feel inferior without your permission." Eleanor Roosevelt

The Roosevelt observation is generally true although there are exceptions. Here's a personal example. If I were playing a round of golf with Brooks Koepka or a game of H-O-R-S-E with James Harden, I would enjoy the pleasure of their company but still be intimidated (at least somewhat) by the differences between their talent and mine. Long ago I learned on the gravel playground of an elementary school in South Chicago that by enduring an older and stronger bully, I was surrendering what little power I had to him. One day, he snuck up from behind and pushed me forward. My face hit the gravel and I still remember how much that hurt. My next memory is of having two adults pull me off the bully I sat atop on the ground. I had broken his nose and blackened one eye. My two fists were covered with blood. I never again had any problem with him or any other bullies. This is what Mrs. Roosevelt and Kathy Caprino speak to: allowing others to compromise our power "to make the changes that can transform our lives. I'm referring to power to experience more strength, confidence, authority, and impact so that we can overcome the obstacles in the way of success and fulfillment." Caprino identifies and discusses seven damaging power gaps "that widen and stretch with time (like cracks in the road that expand and stretch over time) that lead to a loss of what we need most to succeed in life." These gaps are best revealed within Caprino's narrative, in context, but I agree with her that "the longer the gap is left unaddressed [i.e. denied or ignored], the bigger it becomes, and the more our confidence, control, and self-esteem leak out and diminish." In this context, I am again reminded by what I consider to be the most valuable insight in Ernest Becker's classic work, Denial of Death. He acknowledges that everyone dies a physical death eventually but there is another form of death that CAN be denied: that which occurs when we become wholly preoccupied with fulfilling others' expectations of us. Caprino explains, "I discovered that 98 percent of the respondents [to her survey of more than 1,000 women] indicated they were facing at least one of the seven power gaps, and over 75 percent were experiencing three or more gaps at the same time." So, how to become "the most powerful you" you can be? I think the most valuable material in the book is presented when Caprino responds to that question. She offers seven specific solutions. Here are the first three: 1. Understand and recognize your special talents and strengths and see yourself as more capable and valuable than you probably have believed until now. 2. Stop apologizing and using weaker language [I call it the "subjunctive trap" of woulda/coulda/shouldas] when interacting with family members, friends, and associates. 3. Identify what you want [without apologizing for presuming to want it] and build a strong rationale or case to get it. Although Kathy Caprino apparently wrote this book primarily for women, almost all of the information, insights, and counsel can be of substantial value to men who often face essentially the same challenges (especially self-doubts) within and beyond the workplace. I also highly recommend this book to supervisors who have direct reports entrusted to their care as well as to high school teachers and coaches who have students and players who also need to elevate their self-esteem and increase their self-confidence. Ultimately, the value of a book such as this one will not be determined by the quality of the material provided but by how effectively and -- yes -- how [begin italics] courageously [end italics] a reader attempts to apply it. Here are two insights to keep in mind. First, from Oscar Wilde: "Be yourself. Everyone else is taken." And then from Jack Dempsey: "Champions get up when they can't."

Thoroughly Inspiring!

"The Most Powerful You" by Kathy Caprino is an important work on how each of us can project the most forceful and convincing image of ourselves to the outside world.Kathy explains that all of us must know our own strengths and capabilities. A corollary is to communicate from a position of strength-not fear. Each of us needs to communicate our goals and make an evidence based case to achieve them as time progresses. A key part of achieving our goals is to bond with people having similar interests and cultivate mentors or people with the know-how to move our ideas forward. Suze Orman reminds business people "to over-deliver" on expectations in order to convert prospects into long term customers. Suze is a highly recognized financial advisor and podcast host. There are times when a meritorious position must be defended with facts and convincing argument; otherwise, lesser notions may prevail. Sometimes, it's necessary to pivot or travel new paths to explore uncharted territory. In all cases, each of us needs to set aside the past so that artificial barriers don't get in the way of personal or professional progress. Kathy's most important advice is to know our strengths. The converse is to know how each of us is limited. There are times when we need to defer certain judgments to experts. The author challenges people to look within themselves to discover the people or experiences that shaped them over time.Conversely, each of us must identify personal limitations or reservations overshadowing our best ideas, experiences or powerful inclinations.[pp.45] The book reviews a specific process to navigate in order to survive and thrive in an organization. People who seek to be promoted need to provide an evidence based argument. The requisite for a promotion must point to skills, accomplishments and the enlistment of mentors and relevant others on the road to securing more responsibility,a higher position and the accompanying compensation. One of the high points of the book teaches ways of keeping our most treasured aspirations or dreams alive. To accomplish this goal, people need well defined support systems, mentorship, training and continuing challenges which build upon past experiences incrementally until higher order challenges can be met and overcome. "The Most Powerful You" by Kathy Caprino is an important contribution to the literature of personal improvement and growth. There is a considerable methodology which supports the gathering of evidence to facilitate upward mobility in an organization. The requisite steps include personal goal setting, mentorship and diarizing relevant accomplishments, as well as,the support of mentors. The audience for this book includes business, academe, personal improvement, human resource management, organizational development/design, psychology and specialists in education technologies. The book has an extensive reference section at the end. [pp.195-203] Please note that this reviewer received a free copy from the publisher.

A great book to help women--and men--dream big and pursue their passions

Bravo to Kathy Caprino for her recent book, The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Bliss. Kathy is writing about a critical topic when it comes to women's career dissatisfaction. She acknowledges the gender inequities in the workplace, but also gives readers smart advice about reframing their situation and moving toward greater career happiness. Her 7 "power gaps" and various flavors of "brave" are a fresh take on some familiar problems, such as the fears women may have about speaking up in meetings. One of my favorite aspects of her model is how vital it is to connect with your "thrilling dreams." And she smartly pairs the importance of passion with practical steps like networking effectively and navigating mistreatment at work. The book also is full of striking stories, including Kathy's own courageous journey to reframe toxic work environments and traumatic events. As she conveys with lovely examples, our past pain can offer gifts in the form of life lessons. Although Kathy's writing for women at work, men will find it valuable as well. On the one hand, it can heighten our awareness of how patriarchal work cultures can suppress women. And because those cultures typically dampen the aspirations and achievements of many men as well, the book will embolden men to go after their dreams and find more career bliss, too. The Most Powerful You, in other words, is a recipe for The Most Powerful We.

Excellent Book: Relevant, Timely & Great Points

I bought the Audible version of this book. The author, Kathy Caprino, did a great job narrating it. I loved the stories of her clients. Each one was unique and showed how these women worked with Kathy to overcome long standing beliefs and challenges to achieve their goals. At the end of each chapter, Kathy provides a list of questions or steps so that readers can understand how each Power Gap impacted her career and life. For me, these questions were the hard -- Ugh!-- part of the book. I had to look inside myself and examine my own beliefs and challenges. And who wants to do that? Especially when my career was sidetracked and kinda messy. Instead, I heard Kathy's voice inside my head urging me on with all her insights, expert coaching and her own experience. Get this book for yourself! Get it for your friend, your sister, your daughter. You'll grow and will be Brave! See you There!

A must read for Women who lead, but lessons for all

I am an executive level female leader. I have been a listener of Kathy’s podcast and I read this book. I read a lot of leadership articles, blogs, and books but have been constantly looking for information specifically on female leader experiences. Often books that fall in this category tell about someone else’s experience - but doesn’t help with actions that have an impact on my life - that move me to act - to make different and better decisions. This is that book - if you aren’t motivated to consider your part in your professional story after this book, there may not be anyone out there who can help you. Be open, be mindful and really consider yourself and your decisions in co-creating your future - in your life and your career. Thank you for writing this book.

Practical and Compassionate

Kathy has a way with challenging you in a way you can accept and move forward. Her message on being brave in areas that we don't often see as the place we need to start. Often it's the big task that has me on my knees working toward courage. This book helpsed me see some smaller areas that I could take small steps of daily courage that compound to living more fully. Beautiful insights that can change your life if you let it.

Excellent book filled backed with lots of research (and personal experiences)!

My wife is currently reading The Most Powerful and getting lots from it. I've started it as well, and I think the lessons and strategies in it could be used to empower anyone in their career, and life. Recommended!

What we women need to hear

Inspiring book. Comforted me in that fact that i’m not alone in my struggles. Provided me with strategies I will implement in 2021.

Empowering women with power questions

Are you looking for a deeper understanding of what career obstacles to watch out for?

Empowering, positive energy

I’m a female in a male-dominated medical speciality. Kathy teaches specific tools in a positive way to empower women to address the power dynamics in the work place. This is a very readable book with easy-to-apply principles.
