The REAL Story!!!
If you liked the movie, you will LOVE the book! If you haven't seen the movie, read the book first; it gives some poignant information the movie misses. More details, more feeling, more behind-the-scenes descriptions of how this incredible community surrounded and supported their own in the aftermath of this tragedy. Coach Bresnahan does an excellent job of detailing the practices, meetings, matches, and emotions of the roller coaster ride of losing a close friend. This story makes you feel like you are on the journey with this team, wishing you could reach out and help them through their grief. Coach Bresnahan has a wonderful open style, letting us know she is stuggling personally in dealing with the loss of her beloved player, but also trying to help her team figure out their new normal. I love the fact that she is honest about not knowing if what she is doing helps the players or not, but she continues to be a solid foundation on which they can rely as they each figure out what they need through their despair. A story I found captivating; a coach who is endearing, and a book I will read more than once.
Great book
This book tells a great story of a young girls death and how it impacted an entire community by inspiring them to be kind to everyone and make an effort to include everyone. This focuses on the perspective of her volleyball coach and leading her team through the season just days after the loss of their setter. Personally, I lived in the community at the time this happened and this book does a great job of telling details that weren’t well known as well as playing to the true emotions that everyone in the community experienced.
Powerful Story
Saw the movie last week and felt the need to read the book to fill in the blanks. It's a well-written book and gives a clear account of facts and feelings. I've still got a giant lump in my throat from this story. It's got very real emotional content - the good, the bad, and the gut-wrenching feelings and struggles surrounding this tragedy. I played volleyball and I coach volleyball so I found myself tensing while reading the play by play action about what was happening on the court! What an exceptional group of girls and coaches and parents and community to make something beautiful grow from such loss. Thank you, Coach Bresnahan for letting us all be a part of this and as long as I live, I will never forget what it means to Live Like Line.
a true story of loss, love and compassion
whether you know much about volleyball or not, it’s a story worth reading about an amazing coach who rallies herself and her team after the tragic death of a player who was the heart and soul of the team, how they dealt with their grief and how love made them champions.

It is a very good book and I highly recommend it
It is the heart warming story of Caroline Found's way of touching the lives of others. She was the captain of her team's volleyball team. A couple weeks into the preseason on 8-11-11 Caroline was killed in a moped accident. The rest of the book is how the team overcame the loss of their friend and team captain to try and win the second state championship in a row. It is a very good book and I highly recommend it.
A MUST READ!
This was such an inspiring story about a family, a community, a team and coaches that went through very tough times, times we all hope to never experience. Brez does an amazing job getting the reader to feel how each day with the team was so difficult and tough, it was about survival and overcoming a tragedy together. Every volleyball enthusiast will LOVE this book, as will all athletes and the general population. I found the emotion to be very raw. While I knew this story, I didn't know it in this detail and I think it is SO awesome to hear the depths of the story. So inspiring, LIVE LIKE LINE! Great job by Coach Brez and her staff, the volleyball players and the Found family. A MUST READ! - Julie Keith

Good Book,Interesting story-
It seems true stories are better than fiction and this is one of them. A good read, and better than the movie that is based on this book. With the book you get much more back story. You will laugh, you will cry, but fear not, you will feel uplifted by the end. Coach "Brez" did a Great job writing this book, so she is a fantastic Coach, and a great writer. Try it, you will like it-
Beautiful account of a sad yet triumphant true story.
What an amazing story! Such a well written account of a sad yet triumphant true story. I've read through it twice as it inspires me to learn how a team, their coaches, their school and the community came together in response to the tragic death of their star player and friend.
yet inspiring story of a great group of young women
I got this book on a Friday and finished it on Sunday due to the fact that I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN! It is a heart breaking, yet inspiring story of a great group of young women. It is a well written book that makes you feel as though you are on the court with these players, feeling everything they are feeling. The coach and these players took tragedy and turned it into inspiration. Well done. #LLL

A sad story beautifully told by the Coach that led her team through the loss of a teammate. My book was delivered mid-morning and I had it finished that same evening. You will both cry and laugh. I have seen the movie and it was great to finally see a film about a girls sport team; however, you MUST read the book. The book shares so many personal details - you won't be disappointed.
Amazing and beautiful
Amazing and beautiful story about a beautiful girl who was taken to soon. I've head this book about a half dozen times so far and can't wait to see and buy the movie
A human triumph over tragedy
Bresnahan's book is a true account of the tragedy that befell one of her volleyball players, the impact it had on the lives of the entire team (and those of the community in which they lived), and the way in which Bresnahan and her team members managed to turn this sad event into good. You'll feel better about humanity after you read this. It touches the good in all of us.

Inspirational, with touches of sarcasm and strong insight.. just like Brez
Brez has an amazing insight and writes with honesty and clarity that is often hard when looking back on a tragedy and the daily struggle. An empowering book that takes you in a journey through pain, redemption and peace to understand how to get through grief. It was an easy read in one sitting and you feel like you are right along side Brez and her journey through it all.

West High Strong!!!
A poignant story of strength, team, family and faith. I am amazed at how Coach Brez through her own grief, led her team through such adversity. A journey of young women holding each other up each day and having the courage to be vulnerable with their teammates and coaches sharing in their love for each other. I can only imagine the joy "sweet" Caroline and Ellyn had throughout that year! LOVE the penny story, I too believe that was a sign! Thank you for sharing your heart Brez🤗

We all need to read this book it is an inspiration to all of us to keep going, play through the hard times , put one step in front of the other, one day at a time. Great job Coach Brez. Debbie K
A truly inspiring book! Learning to play for themselves while honoring Line on and off the court- couldn't put it down!
An amazing story of heartbreak, hope, perseverance and the drive to live like Line. I'm an avid volleyball fan and this story caught my attention living just 4 hours from Iowa City. Little did I know the connections I would make upon reading this book. Kathy (Coach Bresnahan) does an outstanding job of capturing this story of the season that almost didn't happen. She brought this team, along with herself, out of the darkest places possible to do what seemed impossible. I couldn't put the book down and I know I will be reading it again. What an inspiration to young girls along with people of all walks of life!

If you want to know the real story, PLEASE read this book. The movie is great, but notice that is *inspired* by the true story. There are a staggering number of differences between the screenplay and this true account written by Caroline’s volleyball coach. Caroline “Line” played a key tole in her team’s 2010 volleyball state championship and was poised to help them repeat that feat her senior year. She was the heart of the team with her goofy personality and natural leadership skills. The team started official practices in August, and were looking good. Line’s mother was fighting aggressive cancer, but Line didn’t let that affect her always-positive attitude or her drive to win. Then, just before school started, Line was tragically killed in a moped accident. Her mother passed away ten days later. How would this affect the Found family, the volleyball team, Iowa City West High School, and the entire Cedar Valley? This is the story. “The Miracle Season” is a fast-reading book that is written honestly by an amazing woman and legendary volleyball coach. No one else could tell this story. It is incredibly sad, yet also inspiring. Excellent, especially for volleyball fans or anyone from Eastern Iowa.
a story for the heart from the heart
We Iowans love our high school and college sports. We are very passionate about gathering every season on fields, in gyms or arenas in all corners of the state. We may have our allegiances, but we also pull for one another and share our struggles. The Miracle Story is the true story of the 2010-2011 State Champion high school girls’ volleyball team from Iowa City West High School. The team had lost their star setter and team captain Caroline “Line” Found in a tragic and unexpected moped accident just before the 2011 season. Iowa City West had already won the state title in girls volleyball the year before and was poised to compete again for another title. The loss of Line dealt the team a serious blow that could have been the end of the team. Head coach Kathy “Bres” Bresnahan’s story tells of the team’s struggles and triumphs through adversity as the team grieves and grows together. Even if you are a casual fan, this story will move you very deeply. “Live Like Line” is the phrase, and it represents Line’s passion for life and how she embraced everyone along the way. I remember when this story actually happened; it was in the news all over the state. We Iowans love our sports, but we love our communities even more and support each other in that. This book is so much more than a sports story – it’s a story of living life together to the fullest in community with one another. The Miracle Season – a story for the heart from the heart.
When faced with the unimaginable, you have to fall back on who you are.
It’s easy to forget the reality of those who had to actually live through this story. That there were days when simply breathing was a victory, and many days when the sane and easy thing to do would be to stop. End the season. Quit the team. The story in these pages is honest. It depicts the struggles of a team facing unspeakable tragedy. It shows us a Line that was both friend and troublemaker. Inspiring and aggravating. A teenager with a big heart who was still finding her path. She’s real, and she’s relatable. It shows us a Coach Brez that is sincere. It would be easy to blur the decisions that were uncertain and difficult, but instead, the book invites you in to see the real emotion and circumstances behind the headlines of that season. It depicts a team that found its way. I read the book in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down. Did I laugh? Yes. Did I cry? Frequently. But when I finally closed the book, I was left inspired.
A great inspriational read for everyone
From the beginning of this book and reading A Letter From Caroline to the end of the book was an emotional roller coaster for me. I laughed, I cried, I cheered...I LOVED this book. Brez, what a fantastic job you did writing this. I truly felt I knew Caroline because of the stories you told about her. (You know her sense of humor mirrors yours, don't you?) You developed every team member so well I felt like I knew them personally. I was so happy when they had a good game and I was concerned about them when they were down. This book is about camaraderie, family, devotion, friendships and overcoming adversity. Who knew the play-by-plays of volleyball could keep me riveted!! :o) This book can be used as inspirational reading to overcome many adversities. Never give up...Keep the faith....and always have a friend (coach) who has the empathy, compassion, humor and drive that you have doesn't hurt either! Great job....you did Caroline, her family and the team a great service by writing so lovingly about all of them.
This is the Real Deal -- Authentic and Honest
This is an amazing true story about a phenomenal coach and her players. Kathy Bresnahan does an amazing job describing the balance between being tough and sensitive -- coaching isn't just about playing ball, it's about connecting with your players emotionally and knowing what they can handle at any given time. The love and sadness in this story are raw and real, and the obstacles the players in the story had to overcome were enormous. The description of drills, practice, and Brez's philosophy on training a team (and specifically the setter position) are authentic and make you feel like you're in the gym with the team. This is a story every athlete and coach should read. It is about knowing what is important in life, and how to love the people you care about.
Impossible to put down
Could not put this down--finished in a day and a half. So many heartbreaking moments and memories. The genuine affection Brez has for her players shines and I am so glad they had her to help them in their sorrow. Ellyn and Caroline were exceptional women taken from us way too soon. Hug your loved ones today.
Poignant
It was beautifully written, and had it read in just a little over 6 hours, inbetween two days. Haven’t been moved by a story like this, in many years. The raw emotions can be felt through the words as you read of the heartache and following struggle to overcome the pain and to come together to follow through with a promise. Being an alumni from West, I can’t help but to feel that pain and also pride in what these girls and Brez accomplished that year. The title of the book describes perfectly what it is about.
Incredible read filled with the strength and love of a coach and her volleyball team!
This is a beautifully written and amazing story. Even though I knew the story, the girls, and the coach I learned so much more of the intimate details behind a season that was shaped by tragedy and triumph. This well-told story by Coach Brez is filled with passion and emotion. The book will pull at your heart-strings so be ready to cry and laugh. The Miracle Seaon is a great tribute to Caroline, her friends, her teammates, her coaches and the entire community. It is a story that needed to be told so that young female athletes can be inspired to succeed. A must read for everyone but especially athletes and coaches.
The hesitation to put a foot forward and to be happy is a difficult one
This is a powerful reminder about decisions we make in life. The hesitation to put a foot forward and to be happy is a difficult one, but we must do it if we choose happiness. This does not mean we forget what happened, but we let it become part of life’s experiences. Coach Brez captures the raw emotions of the girls and the season. She’s an inspiration, a soft heart, and a hard-nosed coach all at the same time. This is a great read that will make you cry and laugh, sometimes at the same time. I would recommend this book for anyone, but especially junior high or high school girls whether they are in athletics or not.
This book will touch you...guaranteed!
This book is simply amazing. With great detail, coach and author Kathy Bresnahan takes you through the heart-wrenching story of a defending state champion high school volleyball team in Iowa who lost their captain in an accident. Slowly, but surely, the team begins to find it's heart and purpose again en route to winning back-to-back championships. The detail of each moment of that season was well-written and the emotion that I felt as the team went through it's ups and downs was palpable. The world needs to hear more stories like this, so I recommend this book strongly with great enthusiasm!
A former student of Brez's and a friend of mine ...
A former student of Brez's and a friend of mine urged me to read this book. Our small community suffered the tragic loss of a high school athlete a year after Caroline. Being a member of the coaching staff and the coach of her lifelong friends, I could relate to this story on so many levels. I cried so many times reading this story, but was inspired at the same time. My friend told me there are many parts of my personality as a person and coach that remind him of Brez. After reading the book, I can only hope that those qualities even come close to the person and coach she is. Truly inspiring story that all coaches need to read.
Inspiring! Fast read!
Amazing description from a coaches perspective of such tragedy and triumph. Coach Brez takes you on the emotional journey as if you were right there beside her. It's an inspiring story and truly amazing how Caroline impacted so many people in the school, community, and state. What's more amazing is the way in which the coaches and players overcame such heavy adversity. I cried, I laughed out loud, I fist pumped, and I cried some more. It's a fast read, I was done in 2 days but would have finished in one if I wasn't so busy. A good book for coaches to read.
What a wonderful story that portrays the power of love and the ...
The emotion brought forth by Brez is carried to the reader. I laughed, I cried, I felt sorrow and I felt elation. You know the ending before you read it but that doesn't keep you from the edge of your seat or wanting more. As a coach also, I have never experienced pain of this magnitude with a team but through Kathy's re-telling of it we are all there experiencing it with them. What a wonderful story that portrays the power of love and the truth of 'TOGETHER EVERYONE ACHIEVES MORE T.E.A.M.) Thank you for sharing and reminding us all to Live Like Line!
Raw, Emotional, Inspiring
Just finished this book in 2 days. The words are written with such heart and honesty. I had the pleasure (or pain) of being one of Brez’s athletes many years ago and I can hear her voice telling this touching and painful story. The way the school and community came together in an unexpected way to support the Found family and the West High volleyball team is inspiring and gave me so much hope in humanity.
Volleyball isn't just about Coaching.....life happens
This real life story is an absolutely AMAZING journey of a volleyball and more importantly life COACH! Brez, who as a hard-core volleyball coach approaches life-changing circumstances that not only affect her personally but every player on her team, other teams and a community of close-knit people. The roller-coaster ride as the story is told through a coaches heart and soul is sure to make you laugh and cry. As a volleyball official and friend, I already knew the story, but WOW, what great detail and expression of caring, fear and most importantly love is felt though the entire book.
Amazing story of hope.
The Miracle Season is a wonderful true story about the impact of the untimely death of the star volleyball player had on not just her family and teammates, but everyone who knew her. Her Mother’s passing only days later compounded the grief they were all still experiencing. Coach Brez was forced to coach under circumstances that were neither familiar nor comfortable for her during her own grieving process. The team unity and comraderie brought an entire town through a state championship season which was truly a miracle. The impact Caroline Found had on everyone who knew her continues to live on in her memory through this excellent book.
I highly recommend this for coaches of all sports
I highly recommend this for coaches of all sports. There is one thing that is never taught to coaches and that is how to help your team deal with tragedy. This is a true story, writen by the coach who was able to help her team through devasting events. The book also shows how a group of young women came together and overcame so much
True story and inspiration for all ages!
Follow this movement! Read this book! It is wonderful to read how something so tragic can become so positive and become bigger than anyone could imagine! I will never again look at the number nine the same. I was very moved by reading this. I am not a huge reader but could not put this book down! Hats off to Brez! You are a true inspiration! Side note: The hardcover print is big enough that I didn't need my readers! Brilliant!
5 Stars!
Loved the book! It was well written and told the true story of life after Caroline's accident. I could picture each person as they were processing their grief and how hard it was for the coaching staff to help the girls survive this tragic loss in their life.
