This beautiful boxed set makes a perfect gift for readers of the beloved fantasy series praised by George R. R. Martin, Junot Díaz, and Erin Morgenstern.
The Magicians
Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A high school math genius, he’s secretly fascinated with a series of children’s fantasy novels set in a magical land called Fillory, and real life is disappointing by comparison. When Quentin is unexpectedly admitted to an elite, secret college of magic, it looks like his wildest dreams may have come true. But his newfound powers lead him down a rabbit hole of hedonism and disillusionment, and ultimately to the dark secret behind the story of Fillory. The land of his childhood fantasies turns out to be much darker and more dangerous than he ever could have imagined . . .
The Magicians is one of the most daring and inventive works of literary fantasy in years. No one who has escaped into the worlds of Narnia and Harry Potter should miss this breathtaking return to the landscape of the imagination.
The Magician King
Quentin Coldwater should be happy. He escaped a miserable Brooklyn childhood, matriculated at a secret college for magic, and graduated to discover that Fillory—a fictional utopia—was actually real. But even as a Fillorian king, Quentin finds little peace. His old restlessness returns, and he longs for the thrills a heroic quest can bring.
Accompanied by his oldest friend, Julia, Quentin sets off—only to somehow wind up back in the real-world and not in Fillory, as they’d hoped. As the pair struggle to find their way back to their lost kingdom, Quentin is forced to rely on Julia’s illicitly learned sorcery as they face a sinister threat in a world very far from the beloved fantasy novels of their youth.
The Magician's Land
Quentin Coldwater has lost everything. He has been cast out of Fillory, the secret magical world of his childhood dreams that he once ruled. With nothing left to lose he returns to where his story began, the Brakebills Preparatory College of Magic. But he can’t hide from his past, and it’s not long before it comes looking for him. Meanwhile, the magical barriers that keep Fillory safe are failing, and barbarians from the north have invaded. Eliot and Janet, the rulers of Fillory, embark on a final quest to save their beloved world, only to discover a situation far more complex—and far more dire—than anyone had envisioned.
Along with Plum, a brilliant young magician with a dark secret of her own, Quentin sets out on a crooked path through a magical demimonde of gray magic and desperate characters. His new life takes him back to old haunts, like Antarctica and the Neitherlands, and old friends he thought were lost forever. The Magician’s Land is an intricate and fantastical thriller, and an epic of love and redemption that brings the Magicians trilogy to a magnificent conclusion, confirming it as one of the great achievements in modern fantasy.

About the books
I absolutely love this series. Not to be that person, but if you were introduced by the TV show, don't expect the same of the books--its a completely different vibe. The TV show is dark fantasy, the books are more moralistic. Which brings me to the reason I love these books: with a world of books telling you that you're secretly special or the chosen one, this book dares to say "you're probably not that special, and that's okay." These books helped me when I was feeling like my life was over when I went from top of the academic world to having to stop going to college and be admitted into a mental institution for a while. I will be forever grateful to the nurse who recommended these books to me.
Great Story, Fun Read
Was introduced to the story by the TV series and was not sure how I would like the book, but so far (have just started the second book) I am really enjoying it, and in the book, the main character Quentin, is not half as annoying as he is in the TV series! As is the series, it is by turns, funny, sad, thoughtful, full of action, and often dark. For me it was important that the dark did not overwhelm and take over the story. Without looking at anything else, it is a great adventure story with a fantastical twist, and you can read it that way. The story also explores issues of youthful impatience, the need for purpose, the restlessness of the human spirit and the tricky balance between growing a thick-skin and and losing your ability for empathy. It also delves into the too human failing of always looking for the solution to our happiness outside ourselves, and not appreciating what we have now. You could read the first book alone, but it is a trilogy, so it doesn't resolve all the issues at the end of the first book and more like life, it leaves you wanting to know how these young people will eventually develop as they become, and mature as, adults. Am enjoying every moment of it and it hasn't changed my appreciation for the show., although.... and yes, I am going to say it.... I am enjoying the books more!
TRASH. Save your money. *includes minor spoilers*
If I could give this author zero or negative stars, I would. I am so angry about how terrible the writing was. I couldn’t even finish the first book, and I’ve read twilight AND fifty shades of grey. I struggled through 300+ pages and threw in the towel because I finally realized it was never going to get better. I literally closed the book and stopped reading in the middle of what was supposed to be an action scene and I have no regrets except the first 300 some pages I subjected my poor eyeballs and brain to. The writing is not engaging at all, it just drags on from one whining observation of the main character to the next. Honestly, I get major incel vibes from the entire thing. It’s also 110% a rip off of the Narnia books. Anyone who says it’s an “adult Harry Potter” is delusional. A short list of what I hate from the book: - terrible writing - terrible writing - terrible writing But, in all seriousness also: - main character cheats on girlfriend, then blames girl that he cheated with, THEN gets mad at former girlfriend for sleeping with someone else after he’s thrown away their relationship - every single female character’s primary description is of their breasts. Honestly, I think he skips over hair and eye color but never what size their boobs are and how much the main character might want to *ahem* them - one female character introduction includes the main character being annoyed that she’s attractive, because it reminds him that he can’t have her, and it’s easier to talk to less attractive women - an athletic female character with short hair enters a scene. Before she even speaks the main character assumes she is a lesbian. And this isn’t inferred, the literal sentence says that she is, as far as main character can tell, a lesbian. - author describes someone’s behavior as “autistic like” when they are rocking back and forth while having a panic reaction - author uses the R word as an adjective regarding something main character doesn’t like - the similes are straight up trash. It’s what you would expect from the pretentious kid in a 10th grade English class (who is also an incel) In short, the ONLY reason I can fathom that this author got any good reviews is that he is ALSO a book reviewer and people were kissing his a** for their own benefit. These books deserve to be burned, but I’m going to return them because this author doesn’t deserve my money.
The TV show is much better.
I couldn't get past the first book because it was so poorly written I lost interest. I bought these because I loved the Syfy TV show and thought the books would give me so much more detail. Instead I realized that the TV show fixed all the mistakes of the book and made it actually enjoyable. Never got to read the other two because the first one was so bad. I have no clue how to this became a New York times bestseller
Entertaining and imaginative with a dark streak
Entertaining and imaginative with a dark streak. (1) The Magicians: The premise is interesting: a darker side to magic and the ramifications that go with it. Modern setting and very believable characters. I loved the obsessive excellence and grandness of Alice. My favorite in the series. (2) The Magician King: This one follows Julia. Grittier. Not as innovative as first book, but entertaining. (3) The Magician’s Land: Nice wrap up to the series. Loose ends tied up for an ending that makes for a cohesive series. If I were giving this as a gift, high school would be the minimum age band, given the sex and violence (which is a reasonable part of the story arcs and not gratuitous).
Love this series
Love this series. I have really enjoyed the world that Lev Grossman brings you into. It is like an R-rated version of Harry Potter and Narnia. Be warned, if you are looking for something PG or PG-13 this is a little outside of the realm. There is a sense of realism within the book which really draws you in. It is truly unlike any magic world I have read about before. The characters are depicted well and you connect emotionally with them and the story. It definitely makes you question whether this world is real or all just Fillory.
Not your typical fantasy
What starts out as a cynical deconstruction of beloved fantasy like Narnia, and Harry Potter becomes a true love letter to the fantasy genre with a surprising amount of heart. The first book subverts all expectations with a dark take on magic and pessimistic outlook on relationships, but later in the series plays the old fantasy cliches lovingly straight. It's not a story about a young man saving a world (though he does technically do that), it's about a boy becoming a man, creating the world he wants to live in, and even discovering love is the real magic all along.
There's a reason it became a TV Show!
I couldn't help but read the entire set straight through. I laughed. I cried. I pleaded and begged. And by the end, I was left wanting more. This is a fantastic story and you owe it to yourself to read it.
Great books!
I did not expect the detail compared to the shows. I wished I read the books first, but now I have good reference to characters, and up for a few surprises. Glad I bought this set, great deal!
The Show is Better
One of the few times you can't say, "the book is better." I'm not saying much in this review because more people have said it all much better than I could already. What I will say is that these books are nothing compared to the show. "Harry Potter for adults" it is not. (Harry Potter is actually for adults too!) I liken these books more to "Wiked", another example where the source material, i.e. the book, is atrocious compared to what it was turned into; a musical in that case and a television series in this one. If you're a fan of the series do not bother with the books. If you're a fan of the books you must watch the series.

Hmmm...Good but not great
First, do not read this while watching the TV series. I am not sure if I would have liked these books better, before I watched the TV series or not. They are okay. I think they are boring. They are not anything like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, or other such. However, they are not horrible. I am still glad I got the books to read. I am just not running out and telling the world about them or running home, beacuse I can't wait to get to the next chapter.
LOVE these books
I made the mistake of watching the TV show first, and it took me a while to get past the differences between the books and the TV show, because the farther you get into it, the more differences there are. The TV show takes some serious liberties. That being said, I love both. The books are so well-written. The characters are well-developed and definitely grow throughout the trilogy. I love the creativity, themes, and how most things come full-circle. I absolutely recommend reading the books first!
... of books since Harry Potter when I was an easily entertained child
I haven't found myself so wholly engrossed in a series of books since Harry Potter when I was an easily entertained child. Grossman's work is so deeply inspired by so many of the books I loved as a child but also reveals the dark and real bits of humanity that I have learned as an adult. After reading their books, I would have loved to have adventures like Harry Potter or Peter Pevency, or Frodo Baggins. But after reading Grossman's series... While I love the idea of magic, I don't think i could ever wish to experience how REAL it is.
Get used to knowing Margo as Janet - oh and the books are great. ;)
These were great books. I watched the series first, and liked it. But the books are of course even better. I don't want to spoil the story for anyone. If you are a fan of the show you are definitely going to enjoy the books. The only part that disappointed me was the abruptness of many of the plots. Anyway, def worth taking the time to read.
It's a great read. Be warned
I suggest anyone who watches the TV show read this first. It's a great read. Be warned, there are some explicit and graphic parts, but the adventure is worth it.
I very much enjoyed the three volume story
At times, I felt some of the characters didn't stay true to the logic of their portrayed personalities; however, the author was inventive with the parallel worlds and carries the reader through some entertaining chapters. There were a few nights I had a hard time putting the books down. Fillory forever! I wanted to read the books before watching the SyFy series...
This trilogy is very different from the TV series.
I felt that the books were riveting and the action really took 2 1/2 books to get too the final showdown, then it went really fast to the conclusion. There was less gore and sex in the books than in the series yet that may have made them better to me. If you liked the series you should really like the trilogy, too. As with all good books I hated to have them end and will read them again, soon.
I didn't want to read these because someone told me they were like depressing, adult
At first, I didn't want to read these because someone told me they were like depressing, adult, Harry Potter, and now I DO want to read them for that same reason. I guess this is what my 30's look like.
Not for Narnia fans or for the younger Harry Potter readers ...
While there are definite parallels between this series and the Narnia and Harry Potter series, my preference is for the Narnia and Harry Potter worlds. Maybe the "Magicians" series speaks to a different crowd, but there is way too much foul language (f-bombs on practically every page) and obsession with sex. I would take care in recommending this series based on its touted similarities to Narnia and Harry Potter.
Real magic
Fantastic fantasy worth your time. Sex, moodiness, reckless abandon — it’s how young magicians would really act. Grossman weaving the classic Fillory into modern NYC creates a wonderful travel into a magical world. The goose chapter alone in Book 1 is worth the whole trilogy. No offense to the show, but the books are a work unto themselves. Recommended for Harry Potter fans looking for the real story of Hogwarts, or anyone seeking an escape from these all too real times.
I love this series
I love this series. I'd read the first one many years ago, when it first came out, but I had no idea until the Syfy series started up that there were more! So I used part of my tax return to buy this for myself and I can't say I've regretted it. Lev is a great writer and I would highly recommend this series to anybody.
Q grows up!
Great to read even if you’ve seen the series. Similar, but different. Like getting a whole new parallel universe story line. I’d rate These PG-18. Would NOT let my teens read these. Adult content can be a bit too graphic for younger readers.
Five Stars
the best read of my life... the show has nothing on the books... but I would definitely recommend both.
Worth reading
Just finished the first book and I'm hooked. I hope the second book is just as good. I watched the series on SyFY and the book was way better! These are worth the read if you are a fan of the Harry Potter books. I highly recommend!
Disappointed in the show
I listened to these books on XM radio a few years ago, and am now watching the tv series based on them. Disappointed in the show, I had to have the books. Wonderful story-telling by Lev Grossman!

Very nice box. After I watched the series I had to buy them. Normally it’s the other way around but I’m not disappointed.
Phenomenal story telling
Great alternate timeline to the show, I think the other characters are more developed in the show, but this trilogy is really amazing, I read them all in 2 weeks and I hadn't read a novel in 2 years at the time. It's not a feel good story of fantasy and magic, its lens of fantasy merely allows it to address the darkest things humanity experiences. It's a beautiful story about the power pain gives a person, the power to endure.
Great Purchase!
I bought these after watching a season of The Magicians on Netflix. I have only gotten through the first book so far but the series is definitely worth a read! The books tell you about areas of the university that the show just didn't get to. If you like the show you will love these!
glad I did
Bought this to read before I watched the tv show. glad I did...great story. very excited to see the casting and story on video now. These are not long books, I think they're, like, 500 pages, so its a quick read.
My dog and I love this series
Great series. My dog especially liked the first book. Shredded it up. He was very proud. I want to repurchase the first book but I'm afraid he'll do it again. He doesn't want anything to do with the other 2 books.
The Magicians Trilogy
Interesting so far. The dour, socially awkward, self-doubting 'hero' is appeals, because he's also rather proud of his mental prowess. The tv character walked around hunched shouldered and somehow tongue-tied in most conversations. The books explains that. I've started the 1st book of the trilogy, which is apparently the first season of the Sy Fi TV series "The Magicians". I notice that there are many references to Harry Potter in reviews, however, I find the story to more parallel the first book of the Narnia series, "The Magician's Nephew" by C. S. Lewis, which was my favorite of the set as a child. In fact, the going through the place of the Neitherworld where the portals to many worlds are through fountains echoes the multitude of pools in the woods in the "Magician's Nephew". I noted the Dean manipulates our dreary hero Quentin's fingers to make magical gestures in the "exam". I thought that was a great visual feature of the tv show. Sometimes we see diagrams of mudras, etc. but I am glad there is no explanation. It seems that magic is really delicately balanced upon many ephemeral factors, and that it has its cost. I like the psychological study as a socially inept person finds some talent and strengths to finally out grow childish hopes. It's written with common English as dialog, and the tv show has several sexual encounters, so this is not a kiddie's night time story book. It's a philosophical study, that fascinates me. What if? And then what? Life doesn't get easier, it seems, with magic, it gets way more complicated, and deadly serious. I'm still reading!
An adults version of Harry Potter.
I am ashamed to admit I found out about this series through the SyFy show but I am so glad I did. If you grew up on Harry Potter and are looking for something similar (i.e grad students) with darker and more adult themes this is a great pickup.
Didn't really like these books.
I am a big fan of Robert Jordan and Terry Goodkind. Except for Terry Goodkind's Nest. These books did not keep my my interest and I didn't even get through the first one. I enjoy the TV series on SYFY and hoped it would be an enjoyable read.
Nice paperback boxset
I am usually not huge fan of paperbacks except in box sets if I haven't read the material before. I finished the first book and decided it would be cheaper to get the box set of these and I was not disappointed. Sleek design, received quickly and I am adoring this series so far. I watched the TV show first and while it is different in many ways the books draw you in and make you want to rush through them they are so good.
Not interesting
Meh
Great stories. Weak box.
The writing is great. The box that holds the trilogy is only cardboard and may be damaged during shipping. If you want a pristine product, better to buy in store.
A snippet of the tv series
The series on tv was better than the books, in my opinion. The books are a tiny sliver of the in depth episodes the tv series contained. There are also many disparities between the two.. names not correct or characters involved that never were. Plots that never occurred. I’m only through book one so I will update after book three. It would have been much better had I read the books first then watched the tv show.
Love
Love this series. Will always be a huge fan of the original stories, but if you are going to read VCR of the show, I absolutely recommend the series. Lots to left to learn.
As I expected the novels much better; however
I purchased this set in order to compare the novels to the television program. As I expected the novels much better; however, I wish I would have read the books before watching the television series.
Good price, small print
Good price for the books, cheaper than off the shelf but the print seemed very small and I don’t know if there are different sized print available for this series.
Really fun read
Great books. Loved the show. Now read the books. Easy read. Hard to put down. Great detail and character development. If you liked Harry Potter but wished it was more mature this is the series for you.
Perfect
Beautifully packaged and as described . I enjoy reading real books rather than ebooks and was so pleased to find these.
Great quality!
Bought this as a Christmas gift for my husband! We have been watching the TV series and love it! Books are always better! Excited for these to be read!
Loved listening to these books on audible....
Loved listening to these books on audible but wanted to enjoy the feel of an actual book. The series isn't have bad either on Netflix.
Must read.
Better than the serie!
I love this series
I love this series!!! I watched the TV show first before reading it. I would say that it is better than Harry Potter because Harry Potter is more like a book for children, but Magicians is for adult world.
Great
Great series and books were in perfect condition.
The whole trilogy together in a boxed set
Three of my favorite books in a boxed set. Perfect for the whole family to read ( not for little kids though).
A Compelling Series
Even though most of these characters are ones you will love to hate, Grossman weaves such a compelling tale that you do not care how horrible some of the protagonists are. Smartly crafted and well written with lots of twists and unexpected turns. I could not put these books down.
it is a joy for the mind
what can i say.... lev grossman can flat out write... my mistake.... create with words a setting of reality with fantasy where neither can exist without the other. i have reached the middle of book 2 as i write... the book i was reading.. is patiently waiting . it is a joy for the mind... creating what is happening while the book is read, like HD digital between page and mind.
Read the books skip the tv show
This was a fun trilogy. Adventure, romance, betrayal, magic, it's all there. Very different from the tv show. I enjoyed reading the books a lot.
No problems. Good books to pass the time.
Diving into the books after watching the series. Not disappointed so far. It took a while for the books to arrive but understandable considering it is currently a quarantine. Product was new and wrapped, no flaws.
Five Stars
Great series, beautiful packaging! A perfect addition to my bookshelf!
Five Stars
One of my favorite sci-fi trilogies and very impressed with Syfy channel's adaptation to their tv show.
Amazing
Read the books in 2 days was very impressed with them
Great quality and book series.
Great price, great quality and amazing book series.
Buen producto
100%
I liked the happy ending
I liked the happy ending. It's really interesting how the TV show weaves elements of the books into a completely different story.
Love it
Beautiful box set ❤❤❤
A Story To Get Lost In
Great books! Enthralling world, creative characters & generally good read. Dropped a star because Amazon doesn’t know how to ship things securely or in properly sized boxes. Item came damaged.
Quality Books
I got this as a gift for someone so I cannot comment on the story but physically the books looked great.
Unboxed
Didn't get the option to box this when shipped and I figured all common sense would be that a book would be boxed.. it wasn't and the books are damaged.
Five Stars
*sobs quietly*
Very nice set.
Very happy with the boxed set. The books are great.
It's a wonderful book. The trilogy is definitely worth reading
It's a wonderful book. The trilogy is definitely worth reading. It blends fantasy and real life really well. It weaves it story really well around the premise that magic can not fix people. The growth of the characters through out the book is very interesting!
FANTASTIC, MORE MORE MORE
It met and surpassed my expectations. This is reading, intrigue, fantastic characters and of course Housing worthy magic
Five Stars
I'm still reading the second book, The Magician King. I'm loving the range of characters and story lines.
This is a book series i loved beyond comprehension
This is a book series i loved beyond comprehension. Lev Grossman wrote a compelling story full of love, heartbreak, and adventure. It wasnt the end that satisfied me, but rather the journey that compelled me to carry on.
Books better than Series.
I have watched the Netflix series 'The Magicians' twice. The series is based upon the books, with significant divergence in series. My impression and opinion.
Great seller!
100% satisfied. Great seller!
Good read
Really great series!!! Wish there were more. Great tv show as well. I highly recommend these books to family and friends.
Good product
Perfect literature.

Love these books!!!!!!
Lots of twists and turns in the plots.
Loved this series. Lots of twists and turns in the plots. Keeps it interesting. Some changes had me baffled but it all came round in the end.
small font; still LOVED the bookset
I love this book set! although if you have poor eyesight I suggest finding a book set with large font as this one does have smaller than average font! Other than that this book set is amazing!
The TV series is terrible in comparison
The books were "engrossing". HAHA. The TV series is terrible in comparison. Lev Grossman has other books that I adore as well.
Five Stars
Though reading immense reward
Defective box set
The box came with two book Two’s and no book 3.
Excellent trilogy
Didn't want it to end... so much different than the syfy series but so good
Worth it. Excellent.
Amazing books. The show is good too. Lol. Totally worth the money.
Great product
This was in great shape when it arrived. I loved the series!
High chance of addiction
After watching the show, i partially knew what I was getting into when I bought the books. The timeline of the first book to me by suprise, but by the end I couldn't get enough! I finished the final book about a week ago and already want to re-read the entire trilogy because it was just SO GOOD
A nice addition to our collection!
Nice!
... the show on SciFi channel and I fell in love with it
My partner introduced me to the show on SciFi channel and I fell in love with it! We binged it in a few weeks or so and then realized that we had to wait a whole year for the next season to come out on Netflix since we didn't actually have SciFi. So I started searching google and I found that it was a trilogy! After debating whether to get it via ebook or physical decided on the physical copy and devoured it within weeks! Loved the books, the plot, the everything. I do think there are some editorial plot holes, but I'd have to re-read the series (which I will) and the tv series is waaaaaaaaaay different than the books. I mean serious plot differences and characters, however I enjoyed them both. I am now debating on buying the tv series because I'm so impatient and can't wait a whole year!!
I can’t put it down
There’s not much to say about this series. The author digs deep into each character and it’s an amazing series
These books are awesome
Addicted to the magicians. Its Harry Potter for adults.

My Son was very engrossed in these when I went to visit him that I had to read them when I got back. I read them just the way he did. Very engrossed in the story line and couldn't put them down until I finished!!!
What engrossing storytelling looks like!
This author, Lev Grossman, is a remarkable writer. I have read the whole Trilogy and I admit that all three books were hard to put down. His storytelling is nothing short of compelling.

This series is a great read. It offers a much more logical take on a magical world than Harry Potter, not so far removed from modern society. It's an interesting mix.
Different enough
I like the show better but worth a read
Perfect gift!!!!
Brought this as a Christmas present and she loved it

Adult magic read!
Awesome series, easy read and up my magical world alley!
Worth the money!!
Good book series haven't read all of it yet, but is pretty good so far. I watched the TV series and loved it, so decided to read the books. The books arrived in good condition, no rips or tears.
Harry Potter for adults
Book set arrived intact wrapped in plastic. Great Paperback book set. I am really enjoying these books. Think of it as Harry Potter for adults. Definitely not appropriate for children, may be okay for teens depending on your parenting style. There is cursing, sex, alcohol, and drug use. Interesting how Grossman is inspired by Chronicles of Narnia (definitely apparent in the books). Great fantasy trilogy though!! Would recommend to anyone!

Imagine a trilogy that could hold my steady attention! Good read.
Flippin awesome
Amazeballs bookset. All three of these books are captivating and well written, with a vocabulary that can educate and mystify at the same time
Great trilogy set.
The books are incredible. The packaging is just as incredible. Perfect little set. Great quality.
Fillory and Further
Excellent condition and an instant hook! I’ve been a fan of the show for sometime, and always meant to read the books. I can’t wait to dive in!

If you're hoping for the books to be like SYFY series, you'll be disappointed. There doesn't seem to be much in common between the two. The trilogy is still very interesting.

Just as amazing as the show
The tv series is better than the book.
I really liked the Syfi channels version a lot more than the books. That doesn't happen often.

Absolute Favorite!

Love this series!!
Don't read
Disappointing is an understatement. I am usually a lover of imaginative science fiction and fantasy so I bought the set after reading a few positive reviews. Shallow and emotionally vapid, the lack of anything interesting about the characters besides their collective elitism made things that would be otherwise interesting about the book inaccessible. The setting and concept could have been a fascinating backdrop for the development of diverse and interesting characters, but fell apart as meaningless behind a main character who at least on one occasion refers to women as "gropeable". All of the characters seem to have a dangerous, stunted and limited perception of the world around them, which makes their eventual escapism to a different world entirely not the enchanting and gripping adventure you had hoped for, but instead, at best, anticlimactic.
... this story is harry potter if harry potter was cool and grown up
basically this story is harry potter if harry potter was cool and grown up. also they stole the idea of narnia.. but they arent hiding it. and they made it cool.
Not for children!!

Watched TV show and wanted to see how much it followed the books. Books and TV show were different but very good.

My new favorite
Let me begin by addressing some of the statements in other reviews- 1. You will not like Quentin Coldwater. He is a coward, a fool, and makes poor choices. In other words, he's very human and relatable. He shows some characteristics of which I was uncomfortably aware that I could see mirrored in myself, and they weren't happy comparisons. You'll be relieved to discover, as you work your way through the books, that Quentin, like most of us, gains wisdom and confidence and evolves into the hero we all want to become. 2. The pacing of the story is erratic. So what? Ever read A Song of Fire and Ice? Yea, their pacing is supposed to be simultaneous, but good grief, it's hard to stay on track and not skip forward. Big deal if Grossman skates through a few years in a chapter. Even Tolkien did that. Get over it, it's really not that critical. 3. This isn't a traditional fantasy fiction. Nope, not by a long shot. Quentin is way too much of a screw-up to be a "real" fantasy hero like Aragorn. There is far too much "reality" squished in close with the fantastic elements for it to be "real" fantasy. But it is fantastic! It really does transport you to another world and another life, and if that doesn't light your fire, the magic is dead inside you. Look, I had my doubts about it when I purchased it and read the reviews, but I promised myself to keep an open mind and enjoy myself. That's what it's all about, right? I was richly rewarded, and I now have a new favorite to place amongst my other obsessions- the aforementioned Game of Thrones series, Tolkiens, Harry Potters, Narnia, etc. The only thing I'll say is that I wish more of Fillory had been described, in more detail. However, the characters themselves are *very* well developed, and that is immersive enough by itself. The Magicians Trilogy was an exceedingly entertaining read; it was mature, dark, and decadent fun. Enjoy ;)
Just as photos
Great quality books. Still in the plastic and I damaged.

Shipping, packaging and everything was on time and fine. No complaints. The actual trilogy was just OK. Definitely prefer the show and the characters on it. One of the first books that I have ever read where I can honestly say the show is MUCH BETTER!!!

Harry Potter.... for grown ups.
I've only finished the very first book in the series so far, and I've watched the TV show each week....I have to be completely honest these books are a joy. I've always read books, but I've never been challenged while still managing to enjoy the series. These books so far have managed to do both with flying colors. DO NOT GO IN expecting the TV series here kids. In fact Go in expecting a broader version. The characters are well fleshed out, and I've never related more to anyone than Quenton Coldwater. I can't wait to see what happens next. If you want to experience a wonderfully paced, well thought out, and very clearly well loved set of characters read these books. I implore you.
Excellent series - not written for children
It's potentially my favorite series. Young adult fiction is my favorite genre, but as I'm getting older it's frustrating to see the same plots and themes throughout anything "new" that I read. This isn't quite "young adult" as a lot of its themes would be inappropriate for a younger crowd. It's unlikely to ever reach the popularity of something like Harry Potter or Narnia, because those can be read to your toddlers and preteens. Unfortunately, that's also what makes it great. It's very authentic and "realistic" (yes, realistic in the realm of fantasy). They swear, they drink, they have sex, people get hurt. All of this makes it feel like real life. There's good and bad (the real kind that we mere mortals experience). The characters develop, you love and hate them for what they are and aren't doing. There's moral "grey area"- it's not just black and white, bad versus evil. The author doesn't rush through anything, which allows you to get involved in the story and feel like you truly know the people, places, and events. I hope you enjoy The Magicians.

Different from the Show but Awesome
I started watching the show and have really been dragged into the book! I really love it! It had a bunch of differences from the show but that just makes it better.
The thrill of an excellent trilogy
After watching the Television version, I discovered this was a trilogy of books! I could not be more thrilled. What was so great was that with the books you get so many more mind pictures than any TV show could ever offer. Also, each book stands solidly on it's own, even though you need to understand the characters and how they came to be who they are... So I guess that I am suggesting the trilogy because not only do you get the full 3 stories, you also get to see how the characters grow and change. These are much richer and more complex characters than the Television has time to develop. I love the show, but these books deliver the real story.
