Jesus gets attention not with exclamation marks, but with question marks.

Jesus was always asking questions. Whether with a small group or large crowd, Jesus opened hearts and minds by asking questions that grasped attention and made one think. In The Jesus Code, author O. S. Hawkins poses fifty-two thought-provoking questions found throughout the Bible that believers should be able to answer as they grow in their faith and share their faith with others. Each question features a devotional thought to help readers find answers and promote further reflection.

Sample questions include:

  • What does the Lord require of you?
  • Where can I go from Your Spirit?
  • Who is my neighbor?
  • What is your life? A vapor that appears and vanishes away?
  • Why do you seek the living among the dead?
  • Will a man rob God?

As with The Joshua Code, all royalties will go to Mission:Dignity, whose mission supports retired pastors and their wives (or widows) living near poverty level.

Features & Benefits:

  • Includes 52 thought-provoking questions and answers
  • Handsome burnished leathersoft binding for a rich, classic look
  • This release follows peak of O.S. HawkinsÆ book, The Joshua Code with sales of more than 150,000 units
  • All royalties go toward Mission:Dignity, an organization that supports retired pastors and their spouses living near the poverty level

I enjoyed this book totally. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn more and grow spiritually. Thank you Lord

Weekly devotionals inspiring deep discussions of faith

We love this book as a family deep in the Christian faith. My wife reads it once a week on Sunday evening to the kids, giving us some thought-provoking discussions of faith. Some of the words (and topics) are a bit heavy for a younger audience. We decided to skip a couple of them until the kids are older. The book doesn't pull any punches, which is what makes it such a strong book. But let's face it, the Bible isn't exactly always 'family friendly'.

Increase your Relationship with God

Poignant questions help you confront your own fears, doubts, and weaknesses. I had never read anything by O.S. Hawkins and was impressed with his direct, informative and humorous approach. This book is well worth reading. I'm even taking notes there is so much to learn.

Excellent book by great Author!

O.S. Hawkins has the gift of writing excellent books! This one is no exception. So good as each chapter is a complete thought...so wonderful for daily devotions. AND can be read over and over for fresh spiritual challenges....be sure to read his other books as well!

Beautiful binding, great read!

Beautifully bound hard backed book! Great read!

Good Reading

I'm so happy to have come across all of these books. They are easy to read, but have the best messages about our Lord. I have 4 of the books by the author.

The Jesus Code

This is a great book for questions that Jesus may ask. Very informative book.

Highly recommend!!

The Jesus Code is very very good!! I have learned so much from it! I use it as my bible study daily and can't wait to go to the next one the next day! Dr. O. S. Hawkins explanations are in depth but easy to understand. I am constantly saying Wow to myself after I study a particular question. I recommend The Jesus Code to anyone who wants to get closer to the Lord by getting into His Word with this outstanding tool.

The Biblical ruminations sound like transcripts of some of Hawkins' sermons

My Bible study group is using this as our lesson plan. We've only gone through a couple lessons before this review link showed up in my email, so I'm not very well acquainted with its contents. But it seems to be doing its job fairly well. The Biblical ruminations sound like transcripts of some of Hawkins' sermons. Which is not to say that they're bad or pedantic, but rather that they're short (2-3 pages ea.), and tend to read a little strangely sometimes (but sound much better if spoken).

Good Bible study!

I am enjoying it because it is a very good study tool for learning and reading more of the Bible. The wisdom contained in it is worth all of the time and effort put into the study and I am thankful for it. I hope that anyone who reads this will get the same wisdom from it as I did.

Great little book!

I am using it for an Adult School class and we are having some great discussions. It's great to get people thinking about what they believe and why.

Poignant questions help you confront your own fears, doubts, and weaknesses. I had never read anything by O.S. Hawkins and was impressed with his direct, informative and humorous approach. This book is well worth reading. I'm even taking notes there is so much to learn.

O.S. Hawkins has the gift of writing excellent books! This one is no exception. So good as each chapter is a complete thought...so wonderful for daily devotions. AND can be read over and over for fresh spiritual challenges....be sure to read his other books as well!

The Jesus Code by O. S. Hawkins

The Jesus Code by O.S. Hawkins The Jesus Code by O. S. Hawkins is basically a series of questions. Fifty-two questions, to be exact. Hawkins takes 52 essential questions from the Bible and asks them of the reader. Thankfully, he also provides background, context, and answers from scripture. The questions Hawkins addresses are ones that believers need to understand and be prepared to answer. Many of them are questions asked by Jesus within the Bible. The format of the book is simple to follow. Hawkins begins with the question and the verse of scripture from which it is taken. He then provides the context and background for the question. What was happening at the time the question was asked? Who was involved? It is important to see the cultural context and understand the purpose of the question. He then ties the question into a more modern context and looks at ways it may apply to modern believers. He wraps up each chapter by repeating the question with a summarized answer. The introduction states the book is set up into 52 chapters, allowing for readers to study one chapter a week for a year, really taking time to dig into each question, go back into the Bible and read the references, and pray over the answers. I enjoyed reading this book. Each chapter was short enough to fit into a small window of devotional time in the morning, yet the concepts covered required much more thought. The book was easy to follow, and it felt as if I were having a conversation with the author each morning as I read. The questions covered topics ranging from what new believers must do, to following the Holy Spirit. This would be a great book to give to new believers to help guide them into Bible study. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to deepen their relationship with God. Spiritual thought or spiritual gurgling?

Initial review: Good ideas and questions to ponder. Kind of milky though. But at least it brings up plenty of questions for growing Christians. Update: After several weeks of using this book at our church small group session, as a small group leader, I cringe. The only questions it really makes me ask is if the author has heard of using "exegesis" or "hermeneutics" in his exercise of spiritual thought.

The Jesus Code by O.S. Hawkins book review for BookLook Bloggers

52 Scripture questions every believer should answer. The Jesus Code provides a whole year of personal devotion, small group study, couple(s) ministry and questions we should answer. Out of hundreds of questions in the Bible O.S. Hawkins chooses 52 for this book (one for every week of the year). They all were thought provoking with questions from both the Old Testament and New Testament. He begins with the serpent putting doubt in Eve’s mind by asking “Has God indeed said?” from week one. We see in week nine Solomon about to be crowned as King asking God to give him wisdom. Week 15 we get the question “Will we live again?” and the answer an emphatic “Yes!”. All through the pages are questions, answers and scriptures. We learn about the virtuous wife, resentment, tithing, worry, fear, neighbors and how Jesus fed thousands with a few loaves of bread and a couple fish. Peter boasted that he would never betray Jesus however, he did so three times. Then the risen Jesus posed a question to him and to us, “Do you love Me more than these?”. O.S. Hawkins finalizes the book with the way of salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord. You will be probed and prodded when reading this book. I would recommend this to anyone that may be questioning their faith, their existence or their way. This is a tool to use in any devotional or Bible study. After reading THE JESUS CODE, one may consider promises that he or she has made or the integrity it takes to keep promises.

THE JESUS CODE presents 52 questions, one for every week of the year, that will take the reader on a journey through the Bible and are designed to provide spiritual nourishment throughout the week. Questions are often taken for granted. We ask so many of them when we are growing up. As adults, we are asked so many questions on a daily basis that we tend to reply mechanically. Yet questions have been an integral part of teaching and learning since the very first question recorded in the Bible was asked. In Genesis 3:1, the serpent asked Eve, “Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden?’” Of course, being the representation of evil, the serpent distorted God's actual words in order to create doubt in Eve...and he succeeded. Had Eve been able to answer that first question with assurance (“No, that's not what He said. He said we could eat of any tree in the garden except for this one, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”), the course of history would have been changed. But she didn't have the answer and even compounded the distortion by saying, “and He said you must not even touch it or you will surely die.” As O.S. Hawkins poses the questions that he selected, the reader has the opportunity to revisit many familiar Bible stories and glean information that may not have been apparent before. For example, after the dust of many battles had settled and he had accepted the death of his best friend, Jonathan, King David asked the question: “Is there anyone [still alive from Jonathan's family] that I may show him kindness?” (2 Samuel 9:1) And there was. Jonathan had a son who was left crippled after a childhood accident and was living in poverty with no hope. When King David found out, he remembered his promise to his friend to always look after him and his family. He sent for Jonathan's son and gave him a place at the royal table that would be his for as long as he lived. Not only did Mephibosheth receive a reversal of fortune, his experience became a foreshadowing of the salvation that God would eventually bring to man. After reading THE JESUS CODE, one may consider promises that he or she has made or the integrity it takes to keep promises. Or one may begin to think about how he or she can show kindness to someone --- to a friend, stranger or co-worker. Each chapter ends with a question that brings the spiritual, Biblical question into the practical present. By learning to answer the questions posed in the Bible (there are many more than 52), Christians will be less tempted to doubt as Eve did. Moreover, being able to answer questions that non-believers and seekers ask will greatly improve communication as well as fortify one’s own faith. In the Hebrew culture, studying and learning were valued above prayer because prayer is considered to be man talking to God, while study is God talking to man. Hawkins has dedicated THE JESUS CODE to “those special and sacrificial pastors, their wives, and in most cases, their widows in Mission:Dignity who have given their lives to serving others...” All royalties from the book go to support them through Mission:Dignity. Heads Up To Editor For Future Republishing

I received this wonderful book from another ministry that was in a package for donation. I wanted to say this work stands out as being extremely helpful to the reader and a classic of sorts. For the second printing I hope the author corrects the wrong use of the word “condescension” on page 125 under the “Resentment Distorts Our Perspective”. God was clearly not arrogant but compassionate towards Jonah’s inappropriate anger. The author clearly meant to emphasize the Lord’s grace and pardon was pure and holy, not condescending that means the opposite. We don’t think editors should be missing this kind of error that needs to be corrected for any future print releases. I’m not even a college graduate so please consider how even I spotted this word’s misuse.

A Little Devotional That will Last You for Years.

The Jesus Code is a really cool little devotion that ask 50+ questions and gives answers for each of them. These questions are like, “Did God really say?” and “But who am I?” Then they all are answered in a graceful, truthful, and encouraging way. I was really excited about all that this book offered. It’s not just surface level, but goes deep with these little questions. If you are looking for a convicting little devotional, then check this book out! And I know what you are thinking, “It’s called the Jesus Code, is it related to the Bible Code by chance?” the answer to that question is NO. Thankfully, it’s not like that at all. That, actually, is the only thing I don’t like about it. I wish the title was something different because it makes it seem like a get rich scheme or world ending prophecy type of thing. Other than the title, I loved everything about this. The leather cover, pages, and format are all specifically designed to give you a durable and usable devotional you can use for years to come.

Great for your Southern Baptist Friends

The Jesus Code by Dr O S Hawkins is the subject of our review today. I was impressed immediately by the cover of this book. The book is bound in Imitation Leather and is absolutely gorgeous. Its soft and has an all around good feel and is a pretty decent size. It would be a perfect fit for the side table or among your coffee table literature. Onto the heart of the Book. The books premise is that it takes 52 questions and uses scripture to provide an answer and reflection for you. The 52 Questions format should be no surprise as it is designed in a way that makes it a perfect fit as a devotional or as a tool for bible study. I must admit that this book is not a fit for me, but not for any reason other than philosophical. Let me explain that a bit. Dr. Hawkins is a Southern Baptist and his writing and philosophy comes from that place. So when he takes a scripture and answers a question it is coming from a place that I am clearly not. So this book is definitely not one that I would recommend for Catholics, Anglo-Catholics, or anyone who is not a Conservative Evangelical. However, having said that, it is a well written book and its coming from a man who holds a MDiV from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary which is one of the more prominent colleges for Baptists in the United States. So this man knows what hes talking about from his denomination and even if we are not of that stretch of cloth, we know family or friends that are and this book would make an impressive gift for them. A place to begin asking the right questions

OS Hawkins is the president and chief executive officer of Guidestone Financial Resources and is popularly known for his book The Joshua Code, which is a devotional similar in style to this sequel, The Jesus Code. The Jesus Code is a collection of 52 in-depth devotions that deal with biblical questions every Christian should ask and with which they should struggle. According to Hawkins, The Jesus Code grows out of a pastoral concern: "We have reached a dangerous point in our spiritual journey when we feel that we have all the answers and we stop asking questions" (p. 2). And I think he's right. The 52 questions that compose this devotional then have chapter-length treatments. While I disagree with some of his answers, the process of asking these particular biblical questions, and struggling through how we each respond, is a much-neglected spiritual discipline that's met with a quality resource here. Oftentimes devotionals barely scratch the surface, with maybe a paragraph or two treatment. Not The Jesus Code. It's Hawkins ability to cut through spiritual pretense to provide that weight and content that I most love about his writing. And he doesn't tackle just the easy questions. Why does God allow suffering? How do we overcome temptation? How do we discern God's will? Those tough questions we ask every day find treatment here. Questions that span both testaments, thereby providing a good overview of the Bible itself for new Christians. While his responses provide spiritual depth and insight, I was left wanting more. There are biblical questions he doesn't answer; hence his hint for a Jesus Code II. But I also think a "recommended reading" list at the end of this book might provide more guidance for the inquirer. ______________ Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. Diving In to The Jesus Code

Jesus asked questions of his disciples, not because he did not have an answer but because he wanted to disturb them to thought. Beginning with this as the foundation for the following 52 chapters, O.S. Hawkins provides an overview of fundamental Biblical ideas and concepts, using questions asked by various people in the Bible as the basis for devotional meditations. A note up front, do not buy this book unless you can devote at least 52 days to read this book, one chapter per day. The ideal way to read this book is to read one chapter a week, doing an in-depth study of the passage which contains each chapter's topical question each week. What impresses me about "The Jesus Code" is how extensive the topics in this book are: fate of the unreached (Ch. 2 "Shall Not the Judge of All the Earth Do Right"), depression (Ch.11 "What Are You Doing Here?"), personal reflection (Ch. 43 "Do You Love Me More Than These"), and other contemporary issues, as well as standard subjects such as faith, doubt, salvation, the roll of works, grace, and money management. What frustrates me about this book is that at the sake of leaving the chapters brief enough to be read in one sitting, Hawkins leaves some of the Bible passages at the surface level. Whole books have been written on the implications of the parable of the Good Samaritan, and Hawkins packages it up in a five-page chapter (39). Overall, O.S. Hawkins provides a good read for anyone claiming to be a Believer should read. Whether he or she uses it as the catalyst for an in-depth study, the reader would benefit from reading this book just to see if and how he or she would respond to the topics brought up in the 52 chapters of this book. *Disclaimer: I received my copy of this book through the BookLook Bloggers Program for free in exchange for reviewing it. I was not obligated to post a positive review; the thoughts and opinions contained are my own.

Good weekly devotional

Hawkins was intrigued by the questions Jesus asked. The gospels have over 150 of them. Seeing that it was a way of instruction, Hawkins chose 52 from the Bible, ones he thought every Christian should be able to answer. He begins with the serpent's question and encourages to know that what God says in His Word is true. From Joseph we are encouraged to know our dreams are from God and then keep following them. We learn the remedy for discouragement from the Israelites in the wilderness. From David, we learn to keep our promises and how to recognize sin's course. We learn how to recognize and deal with depression from Elijah and how to finish well from Nehemiah. We learn about worship and the fear of the Lord from Isaiah's experience, and what the Lord requires from Micah. Other topics include resentment, tithing, worry, pluralism, neighbors, heavenly heart burn, Jesus' second coming, repentance and much more. Perhaps the most important question included is that of the jailer in Acts 16. “What must I do to be saved?” (Week 46) Hawkins has written great spiritual lessons revolving around each of the 52 questions. These would be great for weekly devotional reading and meditation. The book would make a great gift too. He writes in the Epilogue that he chose these questions to be able to address the broadest spectrum of topics possible. Also in the Epilogue is an encouragement to accept Jesus as Savior and a prayer. I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.

The Jesus Code

THE JESUS CODE 52 Scripture Questions Every Believer Should Answer By O. S. Hawkins Out of hundreds of questions in scripture, the author takes 52 questions that are critical for Christians to know the answers. These questions are not what you would get in a trivia game, but are questions that will show you God's will in our lives. O. S. Hawkins take you through the Bible showing questions that are asked by people of the Bible and are also asked by God. Hawkins gives a detailed explanation of the questions, how we can learn from these questions. At the end of each section, he gives Q & A, a review of the question and a short answer. The questions and answers will cause you to stop and think about your life with Christ. The book is set up as 52 chapters or sections so you can read as fast or as slow as you want. Do a section a week taking time to meditate on what you read. As a group Bible study, you can use the book for a whole year and enjoy a great study. Good Read

First of all, let me say that this book looks classy and elegant. It looks like one that would belong in an impressive library and not just a bookshelf like mine. However, we all know that you cannot judge a book by its cover. Though, to be truthful, this is one that you can judge by the cover. Though this book contains fifty-two difference "ideas" or "thoughts", the content is quite short. You would expect it to be much longer, but it fits into a short devotional style of book. For that, it is a good thing. The author gives a lot of his thoughts, but then he also poses questions that are good for personal reflection regardless of how mature one is in their faith. If I had to recommend this to one particular audience, I do not think it could be done. This is one that needs to be read by every age bracket. The thoughts are provoking and interesting. If you do not have this book, I would recommend you purchase it. If you do have this book, I would be interested in knowing your thoughts. I received this book in exchange for an unbiased review from the BookLookBloggers program.

Excellent book for study

52 questions from the bible - questions that define our faith and beliefs, questions that Jesus asked. This book is something I would highly recommend for someone interested in apologetics. In 52 lessons this author presents a question then the answer using the bible. These answers are extremely thorough though not too difficult for a person to read and understand. I believe that the purpose of this book is to prepare a person to be able to defend their faith. It is also good in the aspect that these are questions that Jesus himself asked and therefor are central to a believers life. I would approach this book as a year long study. Taking each of the 52 questions for a week at a time. This would give the reader time to re-read the section written by O.S. Hawkins. The reader would also have time to prayerfully consider the impact of the question and answer as applied to their own life. The final reason would be that in the week long format a person has time to study, think on and put into memory the question, answer and application of the Word. A well-written book excellent for study, growth and learning. Thanks to Thomas Nelson for this review copy.

A thinking book

A good devotional for us SBC folks

The Jesus Code is basically a devotional set up in 52 chapters. The reader is supposed to read and study one per week. It is a Question and Answer format. Hawkins takes a section of scripture and then expounds on it and its application. It isn’t an in depth look at systematic theology, it is a devotional. It offers a concise overview of some important doctrines and concepts. I don’t usually go for devotionals. I much rather get my Bible reading done from reading the Bible. I do like, “Morning and Evening” by Spurgeon, but who doesn’t? Well this isn’t that. It does a good job and is much more than the fluff of most modern devotionals. It is way better than the nonsense, “Jesus Calling” where the author believes she is getting extra-biblical revelation from God. “The Jesus Code” would make a great gift for a loved one who wants a devotional. Hawkins has done a decent job of compiling some helpful biblical information. The money from the book goes into ministry, not Hawkins’ pockets. "The Jesus Code" by Dr. O.S. Hawkins

I am not a big fan of books with titles like „7 easy steps to find luck“, „5 easy steps to de-stress your life“, „13 ways to find financial freedom“...or similar – those titles suggest that the author of the book has uncovered some kind of secret and found a quick and easy fix for one of life's problems. That's why I was a little reluctant to read “The Jesus Code” by Dr. O. S. Hawkins...but not wanting to judge a book by its cover I decided to give it a try anyway. In “The Jesus Code” the author takes 52 questions that were asked somewhere in the bible and uses scripture to provide an answer and reflection for you. According to the book publisher, Thomas Nelson, all “believers should be able to answer (these questions) as they grow in their faith and share their faith with others.”As the number of questions suggests, the book can be used as a weekly devotional or bible study – but it can of course also be read quicker or slower than that. Examples for questions are: What does the Lord require of you? Who is my neighbor? What is you is your life? A vapor that appears and vanishes away? Why do you seek the living among the dead? Is it right for you to be angry? If salt loses its flavor, how shall the earth be seasoned? I thought the book was a very good and interesting read, all the answers to the questions are very well written and provide a lot of food for thought. If I had to say something negative it would probably be, that the book sometimes tends to be a bit heavy on theory and lacks a little bit on practical suggestions. Also, I wish the author had chosen a different title, “The Jesus Code” is quite a sensationalistic choice. And to be completely transparent, it also has to be noted that the author comes from a strong Southern Baptist background – if that is not your school of thought you might eventually disagree with some of the content. Great devotional

The Jesus Code by Dr. O.S. Hawkins is a devotional book that guides you through 52 questions found throughout the Bible, and that every believer should be able to answer. Each question is followed by several pages of devotional thoughts and Scriptures that help answer the question. The book is a beautiful hardcover bound with imitation leather. I also appreciated the fact that all proceeds of the sale of this book go to support Mission:Dignity, a charity that supports aging, retired pastors and their wives living near the poverty level. What a great cause. I really enjoyed this book. The introduction suggests doing one chapter a week as a one year study, but I'm planning to read one every day for 52 days instead. There isn't much in the way of discussion questions, Scriptures to meditate on/memorize, etc. to last for an entire week, so I would say that is the one weakness of the book. Stretching it to a weeks' study would be easier if there were questions to answer or Scriptures to memorize for each question. The questions themselves were thought provoking and great. I liked how it starts off in the book of Genesis with the first recorded question from the serpent in the Garden of Eden. It really sets the stage for the rest of the book. I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a simple yet in depth Bible study. I'm very interested to read The Joshua Code now as well. I received a copy of this book from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I thought I would be disappointed as I have seen books in this format before ...

The Jesus Code by O. S. Hawkins - I'll state off the bat, I'm impressed. When reviewing books, you have some degree of control in title selection but you never really know what you're getting until it arrives. The first glance, I thought I would be disappointed as I have seen books in this format before and after a few chapters in found myself sighing - Ya, Ya. I was pleasantly surprised! First chapter, hmmmm, interesting. Second chapter, that's a good thought! Third chapter, this is down right interesting. I'll let you read the rest. I have found this a delightful read for beginner or veteran alike. It does not presume to indoctrinate you, and doesn't treat you like you don't know anything. The questions presented are engaging, valid, and worth considering by all stages of faith. Now someone may say, "Yeah, you're just saying that cause you're reviewing the book." Yes, there is a lot of positive here, but that's because I haven't found a negative. I give this book top rating and from me that isn't easy. I have the tendency to be critical. If you're debating on getting this book, don't! It is well worth having in you're library.

Very Good Devotional

The Jesus Code ~ 52 Scripture Questions Every Believer Should Answer, by O.S. Hawkins has an interesting premise to it. Hawkins began to wonder about all of the questions Jesus asked, and then went on a search throughout the Bible to examine the questions he felt we need to answer. This book, which is not related to the God Code is broken down into 52 chapters. A chapter per week, and the chapters are only 5 pages or so long. The goal is to read and meditate on the question and discussion questions from each chapter. This can be used as a family devotion or individually. The book has a beautiful imitation leather cover which makes it look really great! Overall, while I have not finished the book, as I am trying to take it slowly, is a good book, which asks leading questions causing the reader to dig into his / her spiritual journey. I didn't find Hawkins overly preachy, just trying to help me see where God is in my life, which is a good thing. Nice Gift

Impressions: This 52 question devotional provides a way to learn more about your faith and God’s will for your life. I received The Jesus Code through booklookbloggers. All royalties go toward Mission:Dignity. Mission:Dignity is an organization that supports retired pastors and their spouses living near the poverty level. If you are interested in studying more about Jesus this book can be helpful along that path. Thoughts: The Jesus Code is interactive with the reader. Chapter 6 asks a tough question many are asking today “If the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us?” Many around us are suffering. We, at times, are suffering. “When discouragement comes, it has a dastardly way of diverting our focus from God and His blessings to the circumstances and situations around us.” The book explains that God does not leave us, this too shall pass. The devotional leads to greater understanding and ability to feel confident as you share your faith with others. Hawkins’ book can be a great way to open up a discussion with others or make a great gift for a loved one.

interesting

Admittedly, this is not a book I would most likely purchase, but I was looking for books to review and it looked interesting, so I requested it. Any book that makes you think, especially about things of God and the Bible, is worth checking out, and this one does just that. The book takes several questions from Scripture and looks at them a little more closely. The book is easy to read, is interesting, and although it isn't a devotional, could be used as a 52-day devotional. And although it doesn't go anywhere in the book's content, the book has a very attractive cover that beckons you to pick it up and check it out. This isn't what I would call a necessary book, but for someone who is looking for something new to read, this would be a great book to check out.

Decoding Bible questions

In The Jesus Code: 52 Scripture Questions Every Believer Should Answer published by Thomas Nelson and kindly sent to me for review, prolific author O.S. Hawkins collected many, many questions from the Bible then narrowed them down to 52 timeless inquiries. As a Christian poet and writer, I found the questions immediately stirred ideas for articles and books, and as a lifelong lover of the Bible, I found each question one to discuss each week throughout the year in my Bible study group. More importantly, these key questions from the Bible help us to clarify our own values and denominational beliefs and find biblical answers on which to build our lives and faith in Christ.

A Modest Devotional Collection Of Serious Questions

[Note: This book was provided free of charge by BookLook/Thomas Nelson Publishers in exchange for an honest review.] This book might attract some attention of the wrong kind because of its title, which seems a bit of a tease. This book, truth be told, is not a code at all. What it is, instead, is a decent devotional that asks 52 serious biblical questions from Genesis to James that the author thinks everyone should answer. Most of the questions have somewhat straightforward answers, and a lot of the answers have to deal with Jesus Christ or questions of Christian conduct and belief. Many of them are questions that I ask of my life for myself (for example: Who do you say that I am? Who can find a virtuous wife? Should such a man as I flee?), and the book spends about five pages or so with each of the questions (one for each week). Many of the questions seem to be about a selected few themes, like moral conduct, the relationship between grace and works, and the seminal importance of Jesus Christ. The author has written a few other books, including a similar work of weekly devotionals that is equally misnamed (The Joshua Code). It would appear to me that the author wishes to capitalize on the interest in codes to draw people to a book that is straightforwardly a book of questions that demand answers and which the Bible answers in its typical combination of human effort and also divine providence. As might be expected by a competent writer with a certain taste in personal as well as societal observations, there is a lot of fairly superficial understanding about the Bible that can be gleaned from this book, and so long as one is expected a book that teases a lot more than it provides (which quite frankly, is what I tend to expect and get from many areas of life), one will not be too upset by the mostly pleasant finished product. Nevertheless, there are a few elements that prevent this book from being a great one, and it is worth discussing them in some detail, as some of these areas are quite serious. For one, it appears as if the author makes the common (if lamentable) mistake of equating traditional American culture with the ways of God, looking back to people like George Washington as paragons of Christian faith, and not recognizing that they too had their sins (notably the hypocrisy of seeking a rebellion in order to preserve a corrupt slaveholding elite). Likewise, while the author speaks a lot about the importance of godly conduct, this conduct is remarkably free of insight concerning the ways of God that were followed by Jesus Christ that we are to emulate. This book substitutes rhyming and shallow jargony “minister” phrases and superficially conceived allegorical explanations of biblical events and symbols for a deep and thoughtful examination of the Word. Likewise, the author appears to have the Hellenistic Christian view of seeking one level of truth for a given scriptural passage rather than realizing the immensely richly layered nature that biblical truth (and the writings of other people, like me) possesses. Given these flaws, this book does not rise to the highest level, but if you’re looking for a thoughtful stab at some important biblical questions, one can do a lot worse than this modest work.

Lots of good questions

Ever been blind sided by a question you didn’t expect to have to answer? Maybe you’ve been with friends, or in a group where someone relates an event and asks, “What would you do in that situation?” I’m inclined to say that we’ve all been there, but maybe you haven’t. Would you like to be? Oh, wait, that’s a question you weren’t prepared to answer. I have to admit I judged “The Jesus Code” by it’s cover. It seems that most books using the word “code” in the title and talking about Christianity in the content really resolve to some over-reaching, over-simplifying, and overwhelmingly confusing mish-mash of speculation that every Christian must take heed of now or face *sigh* something. The Jesus Code isn’t like that. In The Jesus Code, O.S. Hawkins poses 52 questions to the reader that were asked in the Bible. He poses it as “What if you were asked this question? How would you respond?” He then fills in the details of why the question was being asked, what was the response, and what was the result of the response, if the response is known. Too often, good willed people, make an allegory of the scriptures and put you in the story. Famously, the history of David and Goliath is changed from revealing how God protects His people to asking an overly simplistic question like, “What are the giants in your life?” Again, this is not the case with The Jesus Code. The events remain intact, but the questions still come to us, “Who do you say that Jesus is? What are you doing here? Could you not watch with me one hour?” Not all the questions are for us to answer, though. Some are for God to answer. It’s no stretch to assume that we ask the same questions of God today that believers in the past asked centuries and millenia ago. “Who is my neighbor? What must I do to be saved? If the Lord is with us why then has all this happened to us?” Using scripture, Hawkins relates the answers that God gives to these questions. While all 52 questions are worth asking, there are three things that I would watch out for in this book. He uses a lot of slogans and quips which just make me cringe. “Salvation is not spelled D-O, but D-O-N-E”, “Get up! Get out! Get back!”, “Salvation is as easy as ABC”. That’s a personal thing. If quips, slogans and acronyms don’t bother you than carry on. In question 27, “Will a man rob God?” he discusses tithing. He believes that Christians should tithe to receive blessings from God. If you want to tithe, tithe, but given that God blesses even those who don’t tithe (Matthew 8:5-13) and allows disaster to come on those who do (Job) this view of tithing can lead to burden and disillusionment. God’s blessings are simply not tied to the tithe. Hawkins also insists that Jesus tithed because the Pharisees didn’t hold that against Him. However, the reason the Pharisees had such a hard time convicting Jesus was because Jesus kept the Law, so if Jesus tithed, it was to keep the Law. Finally, in question 39, “Did not our hearts burn within us?” he discusses the events of Luke 24 when Jesus appears to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Hawkins uses this event to say that we often remain dejected and depressed after our prayers because we’re doing all the talking. We need to stop talking and listen. Hawkins is right; we should at times be quiet before the Lord, but the irony is that the reason these disciples were talking was because they were answering a question Jesus asked them. Overall, there’s a lot of food for thought in this book and it’s well worth the read even just to keep you from getting blind sided by these questions. An intimate bible study

This is an amazing collection of mini-bible studies by one who is blessed by the Holy Spirit. Then gamut of issues and questions that are tackled by the gifted writer is broad and applicable to many life situations. I was touched in so many ways and encourage the believer at any stage in their faith walk to read this wonderful book. Well done, O. S. Hawkins! You have added a personal and intimate view of our Lord's teachings.

Jam-Packed Journey Musings

When I saw The Jesus Code listed as a book available for me to preview, I jumped at the opportunity for two reasons. The book is intriguing because it shares 52 short devotion-sized but jam-packed messages that answer many intriguing Bible questions. Secondly, I couldn’t pass up a book authored by someone who shares my mother’s maiden name! I found The Jesus Code by O. S. Hawkins to be a great inspirational and motivational book filled with tremendous outlines and reminders for our spiritual journey. I found it to be reminiscent of readings from my teen years of great authors of the past. Each chapter leaves the reader with simple challenges for the day. One of my favorite easy to remember outlines from the book: “Ask God to work WITH you.” “Ask God to work IN you.” “Ask God to work THROUGH you.” A suggested three questions to ask yourself at the end of a worship service: “Have I seen the Lord in His holiness?” “Have I seen my own helplessness?” “Have I seen others’ hopelessness?” This beautifully bound book published by Thomas Nelson would make a wonderful gift for someone who loves to be challenged in their faith. Thomas Nelson provided me a free copy of this book in exchange for my review which I freely give.

Old school and flat

You can dress a book cover up, give it a fancy title, make it sound provocative, but if what is inside is stale and mediocre, all that time and energy is for not. Unfortunately, that was my experience with The Jesus Code: 52 Scripture Questions Every Believer Should Answer by O.S. Hawkins. I had company over when I opened the package with this book in it. Everyone oohed and ahhed over the beautiful leather cover. The cover is beautiful. It looks like a piece of art to be framed. And I was excited by the prospect of having to answer questions about scripture, thinking it would deepen my faith and understanding. What I found inside was a let down. It is simply 52 old-King-James-esq questions, such as "Has God Indeed Said...?" and "Should Such a Man Flee?" and the authors commentary on the verse accompanying the question. At the end of each question is what I presume was intended to be a personal question to relate this to the reader, but even these are more preachy than self-exploring. The bottom line is it feels like a book that should have been written 50+ years ago. The questions in this book are too simple and obvious to the modern Christian and even if intended for a new believer, it uses too much "Christianese" to make it interesting or relevant. I really don't recommend this book. It's not horrible, but there are so many better options out there. Even as a gift, it falls flat. If you want something a little more "old school", find a nice leather bound copy of Oswald Chamber's My Utmost for His Highest. I was provided a copy of this book free of charge by Thomas Nelson in return for my honest review.

An Inspirational Devotional!

Once again, O.S. Hawkins has written a book that is a must-read! Like his previous book The Joshua Code, The Jesus Code is an inspirational and devotional read for everyone. This book will make the perfect stocking-stuffer for friends and family this Christmas. Thanks O.S. for another great book! - Ray Nixon

I LOVE IT

Good book.

This book is not for me personally, let me explain why,the format that this book is written in is in a personal opinion/preaching style, it's like listening to a sermon. This book although written like any conservative Christian book, has some very good parts that I enjoyed. The way he took the English words, and shows us what they meant in Greek is amazing, I took many notes while reading this book, and highlighted several things in my new study Bible. I recommend this book to any Conservative Christian.

A beautiful book to read and treasure to pass on down ...

The Jesus Code arrived well on time and well packed. In mint condition. Brand new. Not quite read all of this book yet. But a huge YES!! from me. A beautiful book to read and treasure to pass on down the family. The book itself is very strong and sturdy. Will last a life time and can be read by many and still stand the test! A awesome read. I love it and anyone else would too. Will make a great gift to anyone from a very young age and onwards. PJ

Very pleased with this book. Only issue is the copy right regulation that prevents the book being copied entirely.

A thinking book
