Wonderful!

My grandfather just got this book and had nothing but praise for it, he has been taking classes on carving and took this to his class showing it off to fellow students. So it shows how excited he is with it.

Awesome book for wood carving.

As a wood carver I'm always trying for more realism. This book book has all you need to know for reaching that level. The carving is up to you.

Good secondary reference for artists

The illustrations in this book do a good job clarifying plumage and provide numerous views and positions. It's a very good secondary reference, used in combination with photographs. Because the illustrations are line drawings and are clearly intended to show the details of the major feather groups, there is no indication of shadow, highlight or modeling. That is both a strength and a weakness for 2-D artists. It illuminates details that are lost in shadows in reference photos, but makes the illustrations of limited value as a primary reference. Since I work only from my own photos, the book will be helpful to me in understanding details of plumage and anatomy that aren't clear in my photos.

Owl book

Good book ,nice ref.nice price

Indepth details about owls

Most art books basically flip over details or hold back details which they put in the next book. I blame the publishers for this sort of cheap gimmick and most of us thirsty for knowledge have learned to accept this sort of underhand dealing in the technical world. So, much to my surprise, this is the one book that truly could be called an observatory authority on the barn and great horned owl. The author has been very generous in sharing his years of expertise with us and seems to genuinely want people to enjoy manifesting these magnificent birds in their art work. This is one of my few favorite books in my collection of 'how to' books.

Not just for wood carvers

As one who loves owls - the calls in the deep silence of the night, the huge eyes which see everything, everywhere, the feathers 'round the eyes, capturing each small rustling in the leaves below, the mystical symbolism of the wisdom Goddess Athena and of which it is said, "The Owl of Goddess Minerva Flies at Dusk"...which I translate as "wisdom comes only to the old". This book is a dream come true and everything I dared to hope it to be. Yes, it has wonderful, precise drawings of foot and feather and color palettes and diagrams to enable those who paint and carve to produce fabulous representative art of this incredible creature, it also provides those of us who work with clay, the tools to better capture the essence of owl... or just to gaze at these incredible Beings. Superbly illustrated, highly credible

I'm just a caracature whittler, but I wanted to get the coloration right for an "owl" I've been working on. (I used those scare quotes on "owl" because compared to the work shown in this book, my bird is more on the order of a sock puppet!) Dr. Rogers has an amazing gift for the artistic that he combines perfectly with his technical knowledge as an ornathologist. I am currently enrolled in a short course for birders on the topic of birds of prey. I plan to take thi book to class and recommend it to the others as a worthwhile addiditon, even if they aren't carvers or illustrators.

Fantastic reference!

Five stars! I’m an artist who draws owls. This is over the moon helpful. It shows every feather as well as owl heights and measurements. It even shows you how to mix the right color for a painting. Must have for bird artists!

Great reference book

Great book to follow details and use them on my Owl carving. Super amount of poses and configurations. Give you the measurements for each part of the bird. This is the Second book from Denny Rogers that I purchased.
