The Illustrated Art of Manliness: The Essential How-To Guide: Survival, Chivalry, Self-Defense, Style, Car Repair, And More!

I've been a faithful visitor to the Art Of Manliness since its inception in 2008. I've been shaving like my grandpa (pg. 78) ever since. The Illustrated Art of Manliness is the perfect extension of the website. It contains many of Brett's best posts, along with some new ones, in one convenient place. So much of, as a man, I think I need to know plus things I never thought I would want to know, are detailed in an easy to read fashion alongside some amazing illustrations. Growing up, I was always amazed by how my dad just knew how to do things. One day I asked him how he knew so much. Jokingly he responded "When you become a dad, they give you a book with everything you need to know." This is that book.

A great book, well organized with good information. Funny but not silly, not a deep read but full of thoughtful and poignant information and quotes along with great illustrations. Covers everything from survival, dating, manners, to style. Very timeless information, not trendy or "life hacks," but prime all around essential information. Excellent job Mr McKay, I am very happy with the purchase and although I am trying to pass this along to my son already, I will pass this book along as well some day.

Possibly the manliest book to ever be printed. I highly recommend this book, and it will be a great addition to the book shelf. Pros: Easy to follow instructions Awesome illustrations Humor infused with actual knowledge (using your baby as exercise equipment) And excellent quality. (Printed in the U.S.A!) Cons: I really need to think to come up with cons. Maybe a few of the instructions for firing a pistol wern't in- depth enough...? A section for rifle shooting would have been sweet, but like it said in the beginning, this is just an introduction to manly things, and Brett provides TONS of resources in the back of the book to further your research on becoming a better man. Whether you're a backwoodsman or a scholar, this book is a must have for any man, and would make a fantastic Gift. Bottom line: its manly as hell.

I bought a bunch of copies of this book to give out to various men that I know. Things talked about in this book have been lost in our current culture. To some that are too sophisticated - they will never read a book like this one just because they think they know it all or that know one can tell them anything! My children are long since grown and have families of their own but they each were sent this book as well as others that I know. Sophisticated or not, we all could learn something from this book. Besides, the illustrations are a hoot!

Loved the idea behind the book but I deeply want to see it added to, part of what strikes as missing to me is the many practical situations that could be added such as how to move large furniture, plan a trip, be financially secure, settle disputes between children, discipline children.. along the lines of a orderly, organized and helpful person in all situations. A leader who mainly intends to lead because of his helpfulness to every situation. I feel like this book sold a bit short to the concept of being manly rather than the responsibility that truly comes with being the man of a household. By the way, put some info on wiring up a tv—etc that is always more of a pain than changing a tire by far lol

This makes a great gift for graduates or young males. Wonderfully illustrated and chock full of incredibly useful information. AoM nailed it yet again.

I happen to really like Brett, his wife and illustrator Ted Slampyak for the illustrated antidotes for the male who wants to improve and apply the quality of manliness in a positive manner. This book hits on the essential etiquettes a man should look for to improve his lifestyle and re-establish the gentlemen characteristics all men should try to exhibit. I found the gentleman and leader chapters more to my liking, but the entire book a quick, interesting easy read and learned other things which may or may not work depending on your application of it all.

Having followed The Art of Manliness blog and podcasts for years, it's not enough just to say that I'm a "big fan." These guys and their work are essential to my life and my treatment of others and the world around me. No other resource outside of my close group of guy friends has contributed more to my personal growth as a man than The Art of Manliness. The book–no surprise here–is no different; in fact, it's quite simply the hardbacked version of the blog—classy, eloquent, forthright, beautiful, and useful. This book is absolutely fantastic; a true and honest extension of the AOM backbone and should be on every man (and woman's) bookshelf. Five stars. Bravo, AOM.

When I first read the Art of Manliness it was a joy to read and I went through it quickly and read it again latter. It was a book that I was waiting for and I think many others felt the same so the book filled a real void. Basically Brett and his wife Kay have dedicated themselves to a project to make men better morally, spiritually, be better citizens and human beings. It focuses on men because we have certain issues that differ from woman but nothing has been written about woman that has not been respectful and complimentary. This book is a lot of fun and has some very useful information. Ted Slampyak's illustrations are perfect for the book and add a lot. Its a book I pick up from time to time to learn a new skill. Its the perfect size for the coffee table and very handsome and well done.

Being a mom of two boys, I've been following the Art of Manliness website for years, gleaning all kinds of great information that I can use to help properly guide my guys into manhood. This is the first AoM book I've purchased, and I absolutely love it. The illustrations are fantastic, the topics varied and interesting, and the information included is useful and just what I was hoping for when I placed my pre-order. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone - even if you're not a man or raising little men, it's a fun read!

Brett McKay does it again! This Illustrated Art of Manliness is fantastic. The information is genuinely useful and the graphics are top notch. I often read in bed for a little while before lights outs. The Illustrated Art of Manliness was there in my stack, so i picked it up and ended reading several more sections than I had planned too. I would recommend it to any guy and will definitely be giving it away as gifts.

Art of Manliness truly outdid themselves with this book. While camping in Virginia at a family reunion I brought my copy of The Illustrated Art of Manliness and it proved to be the highlight of the trip. My cousins (ages 9 - 16), brother (23), and uncle (like 45) were all borrowing the book from me constantly trying to flip through it looking for good ways to make the most of their time in the woods. I think I may have to purchase this book again as gifts once Christmas time comes around.

Great Book, Illustrations are very simple but content is very rich. Definitely recommended and a great way for Father/Son time at the local coffee shop.

I know this is going to sound strange but this book was the EXACT kind of purchase I was looking for. A kind of "how to" manual for manliness and fatherhood. I cannot express my appreciation enough towards the authors for putting this amazing resource together for all to share and partake in.

I love the Art of Manliness website, and really enjoy the book. The graphics make you feel as though you've stumbled on a vintage guide to being a Renaissance man. Fun stuff, and makes a great gift for the young men you know.

This is a great book containing lots of wisdom and helpful information. From car repair to dressing like a gentlemen, it has it covered. The sections on leadership are especially enlightening. The illustrations are well done and the retro look is great!

I bought this book because I am a big fan of the AOM website and podcast. I appreciate the content Brett McKay and the AOM team put out and want to support the company. I have given the books as high school graduation gifts and bought this copy for myself. I enjoy the practical lessons in the book and believe men of all ages can learn from it. I highly recommend this book, the website, and the podcast.

This review is by a 21 year-old male. Wow, I'm so thankful I followed the link that led me to The Art of Manliness. The content is very encouraging and uplifting, and the McKay's have packed plenty of wonderful information into this book. One could call it a how-to guide for useful lost skills and embracing your masculinity. Some of the content is just to be funny (of course you need a handkerchief for all of the reasons given! :) ), but most is extremely practical. It covers how to break down a door, control car skids, survive falling through ice, and over 250 pages of other wonderfully explained and illustrated guides. I can almost guarantee any male would enjoy reading this classy volume!

This book is filled with so many "how tos" that have been essentially forgotten over the years. I remember my own father teaching me some of the things that Brett has put into this book...things that today may seem old fashioned or outdated. The younger crowd may feel that these skills, or know-how, are things from the past that no longer apply to them in today's technology-advanced world, but what man doesn't need to know how to polish his shoes before a big date, or how to sharpen his own pocketknife? This book is also a great tool for helping to teach a son, or even a daughter, the basic life skills a person needs in everyday life. I've taught my own son many of the skills found in this book, but I'm going to buy him a copy so he can use it to teach his own son! Excellent and entertaining book! Thanks Brett McKay!!

What a great book. I bought it for my dad on fathers day as a thank you for helping me be the man I am today. When I received it I started reading it with my wife. we bothed loved the illustrations and the topics were spot on. I cant wait to get my dad's reaction to it. I am sure he will love it as much as I did. Brett McKay continues to impress.

I'm lazy! I've never written a review for any product before. This book is so phenomenal that I wanted to write a review. First of all the finish and aesthetics of the book are perfect and awesome. The content is amazing as well, it goes sufficiently in depth for each guide and has great illustrations. Great gift for high school seniors going out into the world or any man.

This entire series should be mandatory reading for every single young man in the nation. Our schools are woefully inadequate in disseminating the required information this gives for a successful adulthood. You want to avoid having your boy become a school manipulated SNOWFLAKE? Read this to him when he's young then read them WITH him as he enters middle school. By high school, you won't have to worry about him for the rest of his life. I speak as a former US Army Officer, former Law Enforcement Officer and as a Social Studies EDUCATOR nearing retirement.

Looking forward to reading this with my son. The illustrations are clear and the text well thought out.

I thoroughly enjoyed all the sections that the book contains. It is truly a treasure in my library. I've been a big fan of the vintage inspired illustrations for years from the website. It is great to have a go-to guide for many of the niceties and traditions that are being lost. This book is something that I plan on handing to down to my children, and their children for generations to come!

Not every guy has every skill, sometimes a helpful & interesting guide is always welcome. My favourite part of the AOM is the illustrations of Ted, and I'm always finding an opportunity to share with my friends "if your going to try that, or if your interested in that here" and I share the illustrations I've saved in Pocket over the years. This was wonderful. I especially liked the being a great uncle advice, the family recommendations and I finally understand the rules of matching a tie to a shirt. It was a complete mystery. Should be a must read for men, boys and parents.

I bought this book for my son, who recently turned 13. It has quickly become one of his favorites! It's really full of not just useful tips on how to do things, but also some great character training. Things like how the man is supposed to treat his wife and protect his family. I'm amazed by how quickly kids will pick up great information when fed with great tools, like this book is!

The information is thoughtfully organized to make it quickly attainable. And the humor reminds you not to take yourself too seriously on your journey. Got this as a gift for my teenage son. I follow the Art of Manliness blog and he occasionally reads posts there too. He has mentioned a couple of times (without being prompted) that specific articles in this book were useful and interesting to him.

No longer living in a world where manly advice and skills are passed from father to son, Brett McKay offers a concise, well-illustrated, and entertaining primer for so many manly skills. Everything from personal decorum to survival skills is covered. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever find myself in a position to throw myself from a moving vehicle, but if I do then I'll have the Art of Manliness to thank for having some idea how to do it safely(ish).

Fun read. I got this for myself but haven't read much of it yet because my three sons ages 8, 11, and 13 won't put it down. I get home in the evenings after work and they are excited about all the new skills they have learned like: surviving a bear attack, jumping out of a moving car, how to fly an airplane, etc.

Great book, as expected from Art of Manliness. Guide includes fun and helpful info on all areas of a man's life from adventure to gentlemanly tips and everything in between.

This book is a great guide on how to do things that many men (or women) do not know how to do. Examples are tying knots, self-defense, and even tips on confidence and social interactions.

A quick, but highly useful and meaningful read. The artwork is outstanding, gives me flashbacks of Teddy Roosevelt. The writing is practical, simple, and all kinds of useful. I have given copies as a gift, and I have a copy for myself. Well worth a few bucks. Great little desk reader.

I am thoroughly impressed with this book. I am a regular reader of the Art of Manliness website, so I knew that this would be full of the same kinds of great advice. I gave it as a gift to my brother and we spent Christmas morning going through it together, it is that interesting. I've followed the Art of Manliness website for a couple of years now. Great articles and a lot of fun, informative, and useful illustrations fill the site. When I saw that this book was coming out I knew I had to get a copy. It is a very nicely made book that is organized in an easy to follow fashion. The illustrations are fantastic. I bought this for my Hubby for Christmas. He’s had so much fun reading it and keeps reading me excerpts aloud. My man is very manly to begin with, so he was initially unsure about the title, but the content and illustrations won him over. A great guy gift!

Entertaining read with a lot of good sentiment in there. There are some parts of this book that preach methods that simply would not be effective in society. Nonetheless, it's not meant to be The Good Word, but a fun read; and that, it was. Always enjoy the AoM work.

Awesome Life Skills which are non existent due to a lack of father's around. The Art of Manliness fills that gap. A good primer on life as well. Don't just read the book do the things mentioned. Use the Socratic Method.

I bought one for each of my sons. Wish I'd ordered one for myself. A fabulous resource for the skills necessary for optimal survival in the modern milieu. How-to's on an incredible range of subjects. This is a classic.

These books are excellent! They were purchased for my younger cousin and my future nephew as Junior Groomsmen gifts, since they are too young to partake in the normal cigar/booze gifts. Excellent Content, Excellent Quality book. Worth every penny!

This book will help you learn things that you didn't know and should know! This is a book not only for men but for anyone who wants to learn about the skills needed in everyday life without computers. It is illustrated fantastic! I love how it reminds me of the cartoons of the 50's. But it is an easy guide to go through, look for what ou want and learn about it. I'd recommend it to any and all folks!

Fun casual read. Lots of cool pieces of information and the art keeps it engaging and coherent whereas a lot of "how to" books can get dry trying to verbalize important but hard-to-express details. It's a very good quality print. A nice compact size that feels very sturdy in-hand. I love whipping it out when I have a minute of down time to learn some new things

If there is any topic you may have missed while raising your son, this book covers it. Now I just hope he reads it! LOL!

I love this book, however my new copy out of the box from Amazon had a bad spine so that the folded pages in the middle of the book were loosing from the spine and ready to fall out. Poor quality -- great content.

I am a big fan of the AOM Blog, and I thought this book did an awesome job of summarizing some of the longer articles from the site. Overall, I thought this had a lot of really good information, and some enjoyable stuff as well.

Very well written and easy to follow. I'm only half way through and I've already been inspired to expand my skill set, starting earlier tonight with safely building a bonfire for the first time. This book has a lot of really great information packed into very small bites, and I absolutely love it. I read one each morning and try to look for opportunities to utilize, implement, or otherwise reflect on how it may benefit me on a day to day basis.

This book is AWESOME! I ordered it for Grandpa Ron for Father's Day. I gave it a quick look through and couldn't put it down. He loved it and most of the things in it he knew from his Navy years. I'll be ordering another for myself

Fantastic book. I also have the Manvotional book by Art of Manliness and it is a must read as well. The Illustrated Art of Manliness has great illustrations and advice all wrapped up in a clean and cool package. Highly recommended. Keep up the great work Brett; your site, podcasts and books have been a great inspiration for me.

Love this book! Gave a copy to my son for Fathers Day. We are gonna go through it and pick stuff out to do together. Great illustrations, lots of applicable stuff, and lots of things we will likely never do but great to learn about none-the-less. Huge fan of the Art of Manliness and this book!

I love the concept and the idea of this book. Some of the concepts are remedial for me, but it keeps skills sharp. It helps our youth know what is means to be a man.

It teaches a young man so many things he needs to know. Which I had it when I was 16

New and some old illustrated how to from the Art of Manliness. Lots of useful info, plenty of entertainment. Whats not like?

Great book! It has a lot of very good information to know with very simple steps describing it. Another great adition to the AOM collection.

This book is amazing. I have followed Art of Manliness for several years and I have always enjoyed the illustrated posts. This puts them in a handsome quick guide that you can read even when the power is out. The book is organized in to six chapters, each a separate persona of Manliness: Adventurer, Gentleman, Technician, Family Man, Warrior, and Leader. The side of the pages are color coded for each one, too. Makes it easy to flip quick to brush up on your deadlift form. Much of the knowledge here is so broad, I think it would make a great gift for anybody!

A great collection of good information and appealing illustrations.

This was a birthday present and it was a ton of fun to read, it was great for the whole group of people with useful information like how to survive a bear attack and plane crash.

This thing is awesome! Really fun to flip through and get practical tips on real life situations. As a father of a lot of boys, this is a great discussion piece and a resource for me to raise boys who have a real idea of how to act like a real man.

Love the book. It's in my living room by the couch. People pick it up and thumb through it, inevitably they comment and start a discussion about some topic in there. Full of great advice, practical tips, and is well illustrated to boot.

This book is a great classic collection of everything we men need to know. The illustrations and humor are perfect. I was excited to see my 13 year old son reading it. Perfect gift for a man graduating, getting married, first child, etc.

More great work from AoM... I was stoked to see the new illustrations in addition to the older ones. I've given three away as gifts already (very well receive) but can't bring myself to give away my copy... I'll need to buy some more I guess.

A great book with a lot of great advice, especially advice I'll want to hand on to my boys. One big caution, however: There is a chapter on How to Be Santa, which wants to help you to preserve the magic of Santa for your kids, but also explicitly says Santa isn't real. Well, I didn't know about this chapter and left the book laying around and now all my kids, 4 years old and up, now know there is no Santa. :(

To be honest, I thought this book would be kind of cheesy, but much to my surprise it's packed with a lot of great information. This should be one tool every parent should have who's tasked with raising boys.
