From Michael Greger, M.D., FACLM, the author of the New York Times bestseller How Not to Die, comes a four-color, fully illustrated cookbook that shares the science of long-term weight-loss success.
Dr. Michael Greger founded the viral website Nutritionfacts.org with the aim to educate the public about what healthy eating looks like and connect them with a community through food-related podcasts, videos, and blogs. Since then, Nutritionfacts.org has grown and so has Dr. Greger's platform. How Not to Die and The How Not to Die Cookbook were instant hits, and now he's back with a new book about mindful dieting—how to eat well, lose, and keep unwanted weight off in a healthy, accessible way that's not so much a diet as it is a lifestyle.
Greger offers readers delicious yet healthy options that allow them to ditch the idea of "dieting" altogether. As outlined in his book How Not to Diet, Greger believes that identifying the twenty-one weight-loss accelerators in our bodies and incorporating new, cutting-edge medical discoveries are integral in putting an end to the all-consuming activity of counting calories and getting involved in expensive juice cleanses and Weight Watchers schemes.
The How Not to Diet Cookbook is primed to be a revolutionary new addition to the cookbook industry: incredibly effective and designed for everyone looking to make changes to their dietary habits to improve their quality of life, weight loss notwithstanding.

Horribly disappointed it is not lay-flat-spiral-bound messy-cooking hands-friendly
I have begun several stages of healthful get-the-pandemic-weight-off-my-belly-and-butt lifestyle changes as outlined in HOW NOT TO DIET and happily pre-ordered the cookbook. Turns out ginger and black turmeric are easily accommodated in my morning smoothie and balsamic vinegar over an avocado and cucumber salad is a wonderful starter. Eating my way through an orchard of organic apples. As to the cookbook, however, I have some mixed review" words. Presentation, color photos for inspiration when I am craving sausage pizza and knowing it really should be kale and couscous for dinner; overall helpfulness to achieve goals: Pass Presentation of a stiffly bound, non-bendy cookbook and overall lack of ease of use for me, an admittedly messy cook: Fail! Why cookbooks continue to be published as actual books stupefies me. I want, I wish, I demand a lay-flat, spiral bound cookbook. Laiminated pages I can sponge off spice dust would be amazing. Oh, and those clear plastic, upright cookbook holdesr? The sharp, hard edges nearly severed a vein in my hand. Clean kitchen, messy, tumeric-thumbed cook -- that's me. Shall slice the pages and make my own 3 ring binder. I shall review the actual and most enticing recipes in due course; excuse me while I find a meat cleaver to begin the process of making the cookbook useful for ... me.
How not to die cookbook is better
I prefer the other cookbook. This one is gimmicky. I find it amusing that they wrote "less than 100 calories per serving!" on some of the recipes because that is literally the opposite message of what the book is about. If you haven't read How Not To Diet, Dr. Greger argues that not all calories are created equal due to the way our bodies burn fuel, what time of day, what quantity, how much fiber, nutrients, etc. After I got over my eye rolling, the recipes are similar to the How Not to Die cookbook, with How Not To Diet leaning more ethnic. I will work my way through this book but if given the option, I prefer the How Not to Die cookbook. The fonts are easier on the eyes as well in the first one.
Really Beautiful Cookbook
Such a stunning book!!! Recipes all look delish and simple. Change your health and your life with these yummy meals!!!
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!!!
I'm sitting here this afternoon looking through this cookbook as my family and I are eating three different recipes from Dr. Greger's previous cookbook, How Not to Die, for dinner. I have been waiting for this cookbook since I pre-ordered it about 6 months ago. Flipping through the pages, I sound like Chunk from the movie The Goonies when he found the freezer full of ice cream...they've got pumpkin pie!...and Jicama chips!....oooh, and look there's Paella, they've got Paella!! I can't wait to dig in and let the crumbs fly!! Thank you Dr. Greger, my family and I are forever in you debt! NOTE: If you are a nutrition nerd like I am, you can contribute to his organization, NutritionFacts, through Amazon Smile.
Fantastic tasting recipes
The recipes are extremely flavorful. I like these recipes more than the How not to Die cookbook. They can be a bit more involved but it doesn't take much more time, and the flavors are amazing. --- Summary of negative reviews: The 1-3 star reviews seem to have not tried the recipes, or because they didn't like their first recipe, or because it has miso paste and they don't understand why, or because one recipe has a ton of ingredients so it's too hard for them. They aren't all this way and there is a variety of recipes to choose from. One review didn't like that Dr Gregor recommends 90 minutes of exercise a day, or the font, because it's not spiral bound, or because it said less than 100 calories when the book is called how NOT to DIET. It just goes to show you can't please everyone. C'mon people loosen up! You're taking things too literally. There is a lot of good to take away from this book. Ignore the things that don't suit you.
Would gift to everybody if not a “diet” book!
Was so excited to receive this after pre-ordering! it’s even better than I imagined. Love all the beautiful pictures, tidbits on why each recipe is healthy, and every recipe sounds amazing not sure how to decide what to cook first!
Beautiful Photos for Almost Every Recipe
I preordered this book and already made the black forest chia pudding which is delicious. This book is definitely worth the money. The recipes are all a little unique and most include different spices which you can include or leave out. There are different spice blends at the back of the book which you can make ahead and keep on hand for many of the recipes.
love this cookbook
made a pledge to cook one new recipe a week - love this cookbook!
awesome wholesome recipes for WFPB eating
my favorite is the no sugar and no oil in every recipe This book would have received 5 stars from me if each recipe had a key to show which of the daily dozen and which of the 21 tweaks could be checked off if you ate that dish. The How Not to Die Cookbook had this key and I wrongfully assumed this one would too. I have been following Dr. Greger's daily dozen since Dec 1, 2020 (about 80/20) - I am down 10 pounds and I don't feel deprived at all. I really enjoy this way of eating. I have learned to meal plan and prep to make my busy work week so much easier. I have 25 more pounds to lose to reach a normal BMI. I plan to incorporate some or all of the 21 tweaks once I reach a plateau, but for now I eat eat eat green light foods. I made the Curried Lentil and Kale Soup found on page 31 tonight. So easy to follow and I had every ingredient on hand. For dessert I made the Ginger Roasted Pears - and again all items I had on hand. I make batches of his date syrup (page 217) every 8 - 10 days. I use it for recipes and on my Ezekiel toast. There honestly won't be very many recipes I do not make out of this book. Thank you, Dr. Michael Greger, for sharing your knowledge and time with us.
Great but time consuming recipes with Asian flavors
I absolutely love this cookbook. The original How Not to Die cookbook was good. It gave me ideas on how to incorporate plant-based food into my daily life. But the recipes in the first book were a bit bland. Very much geared to American / European taste buds. I prefer more Asian flavors. I struggled to convert my Asian favorites into healthy.versions. Then I found this book. The dishes are all tasty and bursting with flavor. I’ve made about ten recipes so far and have been thrilled with each one. My only complaint is that they are a bit labor intensive. The recipes rated moderate in complexity should be rated “complex”. The recipes labeled “easy” should be labeled “moderate”. Still, if you love to cook, and you want to feel your time spent was worth it when you taste the results, this book won’t disappoint. If you like bland fake “meatloaf” and “burgers type food, this might be too flavorful for you. But if you like Southeast Asian and Indian food, you will love it.

Another Winner From Dr. Greger and Robin Robertson
I know a cookbook is a keeper if I’m inspired to cook from it within a week after receiving it (if I don’t, chances are I never will). I was pretty sure I’d like this book because I knew Robin Robertson’s recipes are reliably great and I liked her first book for Dr. Greger. This has exceeded my expectations. I’ve made a number of recipes in succession since I got the book: Pasta with Creamy Pumpkin Sauce; Balsamic Butternut, Brussels and Beets; Cumin Roasted Carrots with Chickpeas and Tomatoes; Persian Inspired Black Eyed Peas and Greens; Black Lentil Dal. All were quick, easy and delicious—I would make them all again. I have two more recipes to try this week. This is a great selection of recipes for anyone looking to eat more plants!
Great Book!
I am impressed by the colorful pictures of the recipes. They are simple and don't use expensive ingredients. Lot's of good information in this book. The pictures alone are making me hungry! I'd definitely recommend you buy this book.
Too many unusual ingredients and "Easy" is not easy.
A great many of the recipes call for something unusual; escarole, green papaya, moong dal... It is frustrating to see a beautiful recipe and get excited to make it, only to find that I can't get these special ingredients locally or only very expensively online. It is hard to rate the quality of the true recipes when I'm constantly having to figure out substitutions. Also, almost all of the savory recipes call for miso paste and nutritional yeast as a base. That gets tiresome - especially if your family is not fond of miso paste and nutritional yeast. I'm not sure whose standards are being used to rate the difficulty level, but to me, peeling, cubing and roasting a sweet potato for 30 minutes (turning each piece half way through) in addition to grating and/or chopping 5 other vegetables and spending about 20 minutes standing at the stove cooking is not an "Easy" recipe. Plus, you need to make the multi-ingredient Umami sauce ahead of time. This book is probably great for experienced vegan foodies who can get all the weird ingredients and for those who enjoy the craft of cooking, but for someone new to this lifestyle or for people who don't enjoy/have time for lengthy cooking processes, I think there are more user-friendly books out there.
Lots of delicious, easy recipes!
The first “How not to die” cookbook was our main source of inspiration on what new to cook for the last 2 years, and the new cookbook does not disappoint! Similar categories but new recipes. We never follow the recipe to the letter, adding what we feel like adding and just skipping the ingredients that we either don’t have or don’t want to. So far a hit every time!
Beautiful book, recipes within recipes.
I haven't made anything yet, but the recipes look great. The book has lots of beautiful pictures and I'm looking forward to digging in. The only thing that's throwing me is many of the recipes have other recipes listed as ingredients, usually spice blends. Some of them are easy workarounds - I probably will not make his vegetable broth as we make our own using vegetable scraps that we freeze until needed, or I use store-bought. To make the recipes as listed I will need to do some prep work and make the various spice blends, sauces and syrups. This is fine but hopefully I don't dislike any of the blends. Spices aren't cheap! I haven't looked at all the recipes yet, but I think there shouldn't be any issues converting any gluten containing recipes to be gluten free. He does make suggestions for at least some that I have seen so far, like the basic brol. As others have noted, spiral bound would have been easier to use in a kitchen.
Great for beginners wanting to eat plant based!
If you are a beginner at trying to eat plant based this book is for you! I have no imagination when it comes to creating and I'm lacking in what herbs and spices to cook with too. This book helps with all that! Lots of great color pictures too. I've learned some new things about foods and spices from this also. I see nothing hard or complicated about these recipes either. I'm excited to get started!
Bought 3 copies as gifts to do Zoom dinners with family! Best cookbook for WFPB, no SOS lifestyle!
I get most of my recipes online then need to adapt them to my lifestyle. Not with this cookbook! I usually find my new way of eating lacking flavor since there is no salt, sugar or oil. Not with this cookbook! Cooking without oil takes awhile to learn new techniques so not to get foods sticking to the pan. Not with this cookbook! I usually regret buying new cookbooks without a recommendation. Not with this cookbook!
Updated : Benefit of the Doubt
Update: No, I made the recipe as instructed and it was a disaster. What on earth are you thinking Dr. Greger? Eating this food is like a punishment. That is NOT Cheesy Broccoli Soup--it tastes like a mishmosh of odds and ends blended together, like the contents of a school garbage can at the end of the day (minus the dairy and meat)! What a waste of money! Original: I may have to update this to give it a better review, but I'm giving it "4 stars" for now, because I made the Cheesy Broccoli Soup recipe, BUT without first having strained off and thrown the "Light Vegetable Stock" vegetables out after pureeing (I don't really like the idea of wasting food--also it seemed like a good way of getting more fiber (nutritionfacts.org viewers will understand why this is important)), and it was ghastly. Maybe it's better if you strain off and toss the stock vegetables out (if it is, I plan to update this review).
Recipes require that you create his special spice mixes and other concoctions
I love the pictures. I do not like that every recipe requires one or to of his special concoctions like Umami Redux or Super Charged Spice mix. I wanted to make the Butternut Squash and Black Bean Chili but the recipe calls for both of these special mixes. That's too much prep work for me, at least today, and I love to cook. I have yet to make anything from this book be cause of this.
Easy, Delicious, & Nutritious Vegan/WFPB
Love the recipes in this book: lots of easy, delicious, and nutritious vegan/WFPB recipes! Biggest positive is that there's not a lot of unheard of/uncommon spices/ingredients that are pricey or difficult to find. I've been vegan only about 2 years but I already had most of the ingredients in my pantry. When I first got the book I wanted to make everything and started jumping among recipes, then having too much food to finish before it went bad. So I reset and replanned: if you're using this as "not diet" cookbook, I recommend choosing one recipe from each of the main meals and focus on them for the first week, especially if you're only cooking for one (as most recipes are made for 2 to 4 servings). The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because I had to figure out how much each recipe contributed to the Daily Dozen checklist. It would have been so much more helpful if Dr. Greger and Robin Robertson included these in each recipe. Overall, well worth the price. Happy, healthy cooking!
Unimpressed.
I'm dumbfounded by the amount of five star reviews. Although I very much enjoyed his earier book, 'How Not To Die', this one was a swing and a miss. Decide for yourself, as I did. I returned the book.
Loving it!
I’ve been eagerly awaiting this book! True to form, these recipes are all simply written and generally have quick prep and cook times. I flagged all of the recipes I want to try and it’s most of them. :) So far I have made the Corn and Black-Eyed Pea Salad and the Black Forest Chia Pudding - both were GREAT!
Delicious food!
This is a diet cookbook. But what recipes! The dishes are luscious! All recipes are vegan and salt free, but I have sneaked in some sea salt and used salt free chicken stock instead of vegetable stock. I am still losing weight, while eating absolutely fabulous food!
Great Book
I have been having trouble losing weight and I have heard Dr. Greger talk several times at vegan events and always thought, he knows his stuff. I have been following his tips for 2 weeks and I am losing weight! The recipes in the book are really good and I have tried 8 recipes from the book and loved each one. I have been losing weight but have not felt deprived. I am really excited about my progress and his ideas work. This is not a quick fix diet but a new way to look at food and being healthy.
Love my book, disappointed it came damaged.
Got my book today and unboxed it. This is how it came... I am excited that I got it. Disappointed that it came damaged.
Better cookbook than its predecessor
Not all the books recipes are perfect, but the meals are very nutritionally dense. A must have cook book for anyone. Some of the recipes are useless because the ingredients are too expensive or they are hard to get. Where do you find 'blue cornmeal' ?!?
Good
Creative, simple plant based recipes that use basic ingredients & teach you how to really put the recommendations from the accompanying book into practice. I’m perplexed by the bad reviews complaining about too many ingredients- these are mostly basic ingredients that any cook should have in their kitchen already (Garlic powder, black pepper, onion powder, dried oregano etc)! And any decent vegan kitchen should also have nutritional yeast, miso paste, etc already. I always have most of these items at home, so the recipes are super easy to incorporate into my rotation. The only improvement is I’d love to see nutritional info included for each recipe, being this is a health cookbook from a doctor who advocates making informed food choices, I’m quite surprised this was left out. (Of course it’s relatively easily found with many free online calculators, but would’ve been a handy inclusion to the book!!)
A bit bland, but still worth it to build on
This book is hit or miss. Some of the recipes are great, and some are a total miss. As others have noted, the vegetable stock recipe is somewhat of a confusing disaster. I was also really sad to see nearly every recipe rely on miso and onions. What about all of the wonderful world of spices Greger recommends? Most of the recipes were bland. For its assistance in providing ways to get so many different healthy foods into one meal, I have to give it 4 stars overall. For the next book, please more flavor. Use those spices you tout!
Great recipes, helpful information on nutrition and stunning pictures.
This is a very solid, beautifully designed and useful cookbook to anyone wanting to eat healthy, plant based whole foods . The format for the recipes are easy to follow and create. Suggestions are offered to individualize according to your own preferences too. This book can be a display on a coffee table top but it will be used regularly in my kitchen! Highly recommend!
Absolutely fantastic!
I got this book a few days ago, have made five recipes so far, and have lost four pounds! Can't ask much more from a book with this title!
My current favorite WFPB cookbook
I have made a lot of recipes from this cookbook and they range from good to outstanding. I LOVE the whole grain loaf, the zucchini beanballs and the cheese cauliflower potato bake. The soup recipes are super too. I pretty much want to make every single recipe in this cookbook. I prefer it to the "How Not to Die" cookbook, although that is a good one too. I've bought a few of these for friends. So grateful to have this cookbook!
So many quality recipes
Dr. Greger hit it out of the park again with another great book. So many tasty recipes and tips. I transitioned to a WFPB lifestyle in mid-November. I've lost 30 lbs, my BP is stabilized and I just feel so much better. This book has really helped me on that journey.
It's nice but disapointing
Interesting book. ▪︎Recipes reasonably easy. ▪︎Some ingredients tough to find. ▪︎Considering this is from Dr. Greger and the Nutrigionfacts.org group, I am more than disappointed ● each recipe doesn't have a nutritional breakdown listed. ● there isn't a list of issues each recipe group might address. Dr. Greger, I fully expected mor from your publication. I'm very disappointed but the recipes seem to be good
Excellent healthy recipes!!
I love this cookbook! I bought it with companion book How Not to Diet. This cookbook has a lot of easy recipes and some are a bit more complicated, but the outcome (taste) has been excellent! My husband saw the pictures and wants to go plant based! I’ve been using the book for all my dinners which last at least a couple of meals per recipe - alternating with big salads. I wish it had nutritional information listed to portion for weight loss and or a weekly meal plan guide to follow, along with a shopping list would be very helpful for me.
What you see is what you make! Yum
Love all his books everything in this cookbook is turning out exactly like the pictures and taste delicious! Easy directions! Life changing!
Absolutely Marvelous!
Easy to read, easy recipes! Super nutritious, and a riot of colours and flavours! What's not to like? 100% Satisfied Only feedback: It'd be nice if at the end of each recipe there were a table with ticked boxes showing how many of the "Daily Dozen" are included in the recipe!
Great companion to the How Not to Diet book
Dr Greger always impresses me. This book goes great with the How Not to Diet book -- and are great follow ups to his How Not to Die book and cookbook. Thank you, Dr Greger for another resource for whole foods plant-based cooking and living! :)
Saving my life one recipe at a time
If one is very serious about eating and living plant based there are so many great recipes in this book. I feel better already & have more energy. A great value and to me one cannot go wrong with trying some of these recipes.
Love This! ❤️
My daughter was thrilled to receive this book for Christmas! We’re both huge fans of the whole food plant-based Life & of this BRILLIANT man ❤️ December 2019 is when I discovered Dr. Greger & all his amazing colleagues. :). It ALL makes sense!!
anything from nutritionfacts.org and Dr. Gregor is valuable
i've prepared 4 recipes so far and all are perfect. The book is a good size, well made binding and offers healthy plant based creative recipes. Great buy!
Must Have
Why didn’t I purchase this sooner? I love this book especially because you can view what the meals you make should look like. I’m very visual and sometimes feel clueless with plant based cook books. Not this time!
Love these recipes
Great easy recipes mostly with few ingredients I love this book and Reccomend his how not to diet book as well. This book has colorful pictures and every recipe I’ve tried so far I love.
My favorite whole food plant-based cookbook!
I own dozens of whole food plant-based cookbooks. This one is by far my favorite. Every recipe I have tried has been a winner. I just love sitting in the sun in a lawnchair flipping through the pages and marking which ones I’m going to make next
Dr. Michael Greger is one to follow
Check him out on Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, and his books if you want to follow a healthy lifestyle. This book is delightful, great pictures and tasty recipes. These are real recipes, not a simplified 5 minute meal or 3 ingredient dessert.
Great new recipes
Love the new cookbook for How Not to Diet. Lots of new recipes. Photos of the food were colorful as well. I would have liked it even more if the book had been spiral bound. Maybe on the next one?
Well done
I like the book so so much
Delicious - family favorites!
This combo is amazing! All the recipes are super easy to follow and so far have been delicious. The recipes are also very different than the how not to die cookbook which I appreciated!
Delicious!
The recipes use easily found items and there are lots of color photos which really make you want to try the making the dishes!!
Best diet ever
Great recipes that go along with the great book How Not to Diet. I highly recommend both.
Read Well, Eat Well, Be Well
Time to abandon the Standard American Diet (SAD) and enjoy good food with good health. This cookbook makes it all possible.
Gorgeous book!
This is one of the most beautiful cookbooks I’ve seen and I’ve been collecting them for fifty years. The images, paper quality and layout are top notch. I’m sure the recipes are wonderful, too. I look forward to trying as many as I can. Kudos to Dr Greger and Robin Robertson!
Making cooking easy and healthy.
Love this cookbook! Easy to follow and so healthy.

Best cookbook for vegans
This is an amazing cookbook. My wife loved it as a Christmas gift and it pays dividends to eat healthier! Worth the money!
Great cookbook for life
Great book and clear instructions
Beautiful
My absolute favorite cookbook.
Book
Very interesting recipes, looking forward to trying.
Easy recipes and lots of info
I highly recommend this book!
Gorgeous book
Gorgeous book with easy to make recipes.
Excellent
I just made the veggie tart. Crust was amazing, filling was great. The zucchini in my opinion should be cooked down so not water is in it but other than that very good
Best cook book to date
I cook from this book and the first one “How not to Die” daily. Delicious recipes, every one of them.
Sloppy shipping
Haven't read the book yet, but arrived with corners bent. Wasteful and reckless use of packaging by Amazon. No friend of the environment. Greger's material is excellent. Buy it elsewhere.
Difficult to read ingredients- font too light and small
The format of recipes makes is almost unusable. The font and Cole ingredients list is WAY TO SMALL. I should t have to strain to see the print of ingredients. The binding is weird and makes it difficult in the kitchen.
Great recipes and all healthy! A must have cookbook
I have a ton of recipe books but this book is phenomenal! Great recipes and all healthy. I got it for my son but after looking through it I wish I would’ve got one for myself.
Many healthy recipes
I love this healthy cookbook. It offers so many great choices that I never run out of tasty and healthy meal ideas.
Great Cookbook!
The recipes are easy to follow & delicious!
Book misprinted
The book is printed upside down.
Blah
Not as good as the first cookbook. The first one felt like it was thought out more.
Dr. Gregor is the best & this “cookbook” puts one on right path to healthy eating.
For anyone following or wants to try “whole food plant based diet!!
Beautiful cookbook!
Amazing recipes, gorgeous pictures. I read, “How Not to Diet” but I like that the book gives you a small synopsis from it anyways. Can’t wait to cook it all.
Awesome
Definifely helps me think outside the box yet inside the realm of the healthiest choices possible. Would definitely reccomend to anyone.

Did not meet expectations...better options available
I was really looking forward to this cookbook as I read How Not to Diet last year and was particularly looking forward to the breakfast section to see additional ways to incorporate beans into breakfast, as well as what meals generally might look like following the guidelines. Most of the breakfasts were meals that most Americans would associate with lunch/dinner. There were three sweeter forms of breakfast, but only one of those contained beans (Chocolate-Covered Cherry BROL Bowl). The Chickpea Cauliflower Scramble might be the only other thing close to being what most would consider breakfast. Many of the recipes list a different recipe as an ingredient, so there can oftentimes be more prep necessary than might be apparent at first glance. Instead of rating recipes as easy, medium, etc. it would be nice if there was an indication of how long it's estimated to take, particularly if it was broken down into active prep and cooking/soaking time. Cauliflower Alfredo Linguine with Roasted Asparagus: This was a universal bust. The texture of the cauliflower Alfredo sauce did not work, and this was really lacking flavor. I tried spicing it up for some leftovers, but it was so unappetizing we ended up throwing this out, and I HATE throwing out food. This recipe called for Brazil Nut Parm (a separate recipe) which itself called for Dr. Greger's Special Spice Blend (another recipe). Granted, though, that Brazil Nut Parm the the Special Spice Blend are used in a number of recipes. Jicama Nachos: This was our favorite recipe of the bunch; my husband has asked me to make it again. The jicama nachos, however, ended up soft/chewy rather than crispy. I used a mandoline and actually experimented with the thickness (1.5mm and 3mm). The jicama chips were supposed to be in the oven for 40 minutes, flipping halfway. 1.5mm slices were burned through at the halfway mark, and a number of the 3mm ones had burned sections, too. Only cooked them for 15m on the other side, and some got burned there as well. Next time I'm going to try 15m on each side at 3mm. Pesto-Tossed Spaghetti Squash Noodles and White Beans: This was a middling recipe. Even though I added fresh lemon juice and lemon zest, it still didn't taste flavorful enough. Also, a tip on how to keep the pesto from oxidizing would have been appreciated. (The lemon juice was added after it started oxidizing, leaving it an olive color rather than fully turning brown.) And this required making Basil Pesto (different recipe), Brazil Nut Parm (different recipe), both of which required Dr. Greger's Special Spice Blend (different recipe). Overall, I'm not giving up on this cookbook, but it's definitely going to take a back burner to some other cookbooks which have only yielded good to excellent recipes so far. Those are Simple Green Meals by Jen Hansard and Appetite for Reduction by Isa Chandra Moskowitz. The recipes I've made so far from this cookbook have taken too long to make when the majority of the resulting meals aren't fan-favorites.
HELPFUL COMPANION TO HOW NOT TO DIET
If you are looking to follow the advice in How Not to Diet, this is an excellent starting point. I'm a bit intimidate by how complicated many of the recipes appear to be based on the ingredient lists, but I could be off the mark since so many of the ingredients focus on spices. In any case, this book should help get you one stepper close to healthy! All good.
Great food photos and interesting recipes
I’ve been really hungry for nachos lately, so the Jicama Nachos are going to the top of my “next recipe to try” list. And on my Christmas dinner list, for dessert I’m planning to make the Ginger Roasted Pears with the Date Syrup. Can’t wait to try these and others interesting finds in the book — the lovely food photos make each dish really inviting.
Love Love Love!!!
Oh my goodness I’m So excited I want to jump through the roof! Every picture looks amazing, it is beautifully illustrated. I want to eat every recipe!!
Home run
Spot on well researched and a delight to read. Nothing new to me because I figured this out 40 years ago, but nice to see in print. Can’t believe people are complaining about ease of the recipe section. DUMB. There are millions of recipes on the internet from SCD to AIP to gluten free and so forth. All plant based and mostly non processed. You can DIY once you know what to eat and when to eat. I eat 2 plant based meals a day between 11 and 7. No snacks. I am 71, weigh 110, perfect health and turn male heads. This works.
Informative awesome book
Love this book! It is very informative and the recipes are great with awesome pictures to match. I am diabetic. It has helped me tremendously! Thank you Dr. McGregor!!!!!
A brilliant cookery book. Amazing recipes.
Received my book yesterday and was just browsing through the pages. This book is fantastic, or should I say addictive in a very good way. Before I knew it, my instant pot was out and and I was cooking. I had to stop because I ran out of containers. The pictures are so inviting that you almost want to try every recipe. The good thing also is that the ingredients are what you already have in your home if you are plant based and don't want your family to go back to eating processed foods. The recipes are very easy to follow. I am a busy mum and don't want to spend too much time cooking all day. Here's what I cooked in 60 minutes. 1. Light Vegetable Broth page 214 2. Umami Sauce Redux page 212 3. Black Lentil Dahl page 137 4. West African Red Bean and Sweet Potato Stew 5. Szechuan Tempeh and Broccoli ( Didn't have Tempeh so I used Tofu) 6. DR. Greger' s Special Spice Blend.
Disapointing cookbook
Right at the start of this book 90mins per day exercise is recommended, in my opinion anyone exercising 90mins per day would get fit, loose weight and could eat what ever they liked. Most recipes have onion powder, garlic powder, yeast and miso paste in - why? Are good fresh vegetables not enough? I dislike the idea of using processed food in my fresh food. Plant based food can be so much nicer than this and just as good for your health.
ANOTHER AMAZING BOOK BY DOCTOR GREGER!
Simple whole foods and healthy recipes! Not only are the recipes extremely nutritious but very tasty. One issue I had with plant-based cookbooks is that they require too many fancy ingredients - but this did not! I’ve been plant-based for 9 months now after reading his first book How Not To Die - I constantly recommend his books to everyone because they’ve changed my relationship with food a lot.
Absolute pure awesomeness
Pre-ordered and waited for about 6 months for the new cookbook. Was so excited when it finally arrived I was close to tears. (The How Not To Die cookbook is a gem, too). Wanna loose weight permanently? Stop making excuses and get cooking :-) Highly recommended, top marks.
Great Healthy Recipes
I've cooked a couple of the Recipes & looked through the whole book a couple of times. The recipes look beautiful, Hearty, Healthy & easy enough to make! I'm a fan of Dr Greger & enjoy eating whole foods. It's a great book for anyone that wants to eat food that's not only good for your health but that's tasty & filling too!
The best vegan cookbook
So many great recipes. One of the only cookbooks where I would cook almost everything in it and not just a few recipes. I’ve enjoyed real whole food so much more since buying this book. Love Dr Gregor! I prefer this one to How Not To Die cookbook but both are great.
Love it
Dr Greger is a genius
Good recipes
Like this book good recipes well laid out good for new life style change
Good
Some really nice recipes in here. I love the corn chowder and black lentil daal in particular! Both very quick and easy to make. I like how he substitutes salt for miso paste...adds more dimension to the dishes. For me this has been a good cook book as its made me try meals that I would have never previously before and full of healthful ingredients. 4 stars as I wish there would have been more exciting bean dishes.
Invaluable resource.
A brilliant book!!! Such useful information, very influential and important information.
Useful information
Very pleased with my purchase. Lots of useful information. I often refer to this book as well as Michael Greger's other book How Not to Die.
Love it
This book as other books by Michael Greger are soooo good. It is a great addition to my lockdown life. The recipes are easy, healthy and delicious. Highly recommend it. It is so beautiful too.
Not budget or family friendly
Way too many ingredients for 1 dish. And what’s with the white miso paste ingredient?? It’s needed in almost every recipe!!
Great purchase
Fantastic cookbook with great photos of the recipes!
My favorite cookbook!
So many FANTASTIC hearty recipes!! My go to cookbook these days. The recipes are pretty effortless and the flavors are yummy and healthy! Looking forward to volume 2!!
Highly recommend this book.
Dr Michael Gregor's 'How not to diet' cookbook is amazing.
Tasty
So far so good. Made 4 meals and all really tasty.
Ok for the money
Not a lot of recipes in there I liked
One of my favourite cookbooks
It’s so lovely to be able to cook a truly healthy and nourishing meal but most of all for it to be tasty too! This book is a must if you respect your body.
Feel good recipes!
Love all DR Michael Greger's books and this one doesn't disappoint! Great range of recipes. Have made 2 soups already and they were beaut!
Already lost 15 lbs with recipes from this book!
This book is incredible, I’ve managed to lose fat very quickly with very low effort and never feeling hungry. These recipes are so satiating and guilt free. Noticed other improvements in my life since adopting plant based diet too. Pick this up if you want to permanently shed some lbs.
Love it
Love it
Must have
Very helpful book.
Amazing/easy recipes the entire family can enjoy
If you're looking to incorporate plant based foods for health reasons, this cookbook is perfect. An easy approach to incorporating fruits/vegetables into your life without compromising on feeling full/satisfied. I also recommend his 2 other books: the how not to diet book with science backed research and excellent tips that work and also his how not to die book/cookbook is also a hit.
Worthy Addition to Cookbook Collection
This book is gorgeous! I'm a big fan of food photography, and the pictures in this book do not disappoint. I've eaten plant-based for a long time, and the recipes in this book offer so many different tastes and textures. It is far better than I expected. Can't wait to make the spice blends!
Wayyyyy too many ingredients
These plant-based, oil-free recipes look enticing, mouth-watering photos and all, but my heart sank to see that some included two dozen ingredients: the list was as long as the page... Lots of excellent tips and explanations for the health benefits of the ingredients, but I'm going to give this book away and wait for his next one, which will hopefully be 6 ingredients or less and/or a no-cook, no-bake recipe book for us busy folks. :)
This is the best plant based cook book I own
I have enjoyed every recipe so far. I would highly recommend this cook book. Very flavourful and easy recipes to follow and pictures to go with them.
Just ok
I think there's a ton of plant based recipe books out there and blogs to follow for great ideas. This was ok. I've made several recipes and they were all on the bland side. I did make the cocoa brownies from his first book since I saw the recipe on a blog post and they are fantastic. Otherwise, this was a very mediocre purchase.
Great WFPB cookbook!!
Great cook book for whole food plant based dieters! So far everything we have tried has been easy and delicious! It’s hard to get vegan cookbooks without much processed foods or oils. This one is perfect.
Quite exotic recipes, not for beginners
I am a big fan of Dr.Greger’s work (his books have brought my lifestyle and health to a whole new level) and was really looking forward to this new cookbook. It is beautiful and has some interesting recipes, but the first book “How not to die cookbook” was better in my opinion. The second book has more specific recipes with longer ingredient lists (some might be tricky to find unless you live in a big city) and longer cooking times. And while from the first book all the recipes we tried turned out great, some of these needed adjustments. Overall, not a bad cookbook, especially if you like to spend more time on cooking and experimenting with different cuisines. But if you’re torn whether to get this one or the first, start there - the recipes are simpler, faster to make, with more accessible ingredients and more traditional tastes. As to the “not dieting” part, that’s absolutely true - just sticking to the Greger’s “Daily Dozen” (most of the time, I still have vegan treats every week), has made me immune to any unwanted pounds.
Not for me n my nut allergies.
Very very nut based. I bought as a pre sale before I had read the whole How Not to Diet book not realizing it was a Nut based diet. Couldnt return due to the pre-sale. I am anaphylaxis allergic to nuts so this was a waste
