The Holy Qur'an

Seems to be a good 'English translation' though I'm no expert. I bought this book, wanting to learn what it was in fundamental Islamic teaching - The Quran - that the like of ISIS/ISIL and others are taking to 'extremes' or being 'fundamentalist' about. Yes it has its moments of fire and brimstone, but then so does the Holy Bible's Old Testament upon which The Quran is based. So what did I discover? - Frankly - that none of these guys have ever read the book for themselves! Just one quote: [God] Allah talking to Muhammad through The Angel Gabriel: "Those who believe The Book [Basically 'The Torah of The Old Testament] those who follow the Jewish faith, and the Sabians and the Christians, any who believe in Allah [God] and the Last Day, and work righteously, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve." Hello!!!

My teen age son wanted to convert to Muslim and wanted this book. I didnt want to buy it for him because he was raised Christain. Glad I bought it, because after a lot of prayers and him reading it he started having second thoughts and now has lost interest.

I’m not Muslim, bought it to read just so I can understand what it’s about. Very easily understandable. This version is great!

Just wanted to see what Islam believes. The stories of the Patriachs are far different from those in the Bible. The only name of any god is Al Lah, the one worshipped by Muhammad's tribe but now Allah. The "name" of the God of the Bible is never mentioned. Some of the "commands" are good,. Since Allah's 3 daughters were abrogated from the Qur'an, there are tirades concerning "god" having a "son" (in the same idea of the daughters). Both the Qur'an and the Bible relate stories to negate polytheism and idol worship. The Qur'an brings up "Hell" is over and over -- a much worse place than The Divine Comedy ever dreamed of. Thanks for actually "proving" the Bible's worth to me.

This is the Quran in plain easy to understand English. The only thing missing is the Tafsir and commentary of Islamic scholars to really understand the meaning of the text and the context of what is being discussed. It is a good start to understanding what is soon to be the worlds largest religion in the world. It is interesting that the Surah's are not in chronological order like the Bible but from largest to smallest the way Muhammad commanded it to be. The stories of the prophets are littered throughout the book and are very similar to the Bible besides a few details but missing many of the minor prophets of the Bible. But to really understand Islam you also need to read the Hadith which are quotations of the prophet Muhammad from his companions that were collected by Hadith scholars. These contain the major applications of Islam in daily life, like the proper way to eat, greet people, sleep, engage in trade, proper way to use the bathroom , etc.. An interesting aspect of Islam from other religions is that Islam has regulations and rulings for basically every action you do, even more specific rules and regulations than Talmudic Judaism in some ways, while most religions give only guiding principles. A very good introductory work.

Beautiful translation. If you want to read the Quran and understand it in English this is a great book. It doesn't have the Arabic next to the English. It is just the whole book of English words.

I really like that it’s easy to read for the English language and easy to understand for me, and this is because I want to understand the Islam and Muslim way because my husband is Muslim. So having this book makes it a lot easier with the audiobook that I have thank you.

If you truly want to know what The Holy Qur'an says stop listening to other people and read it yourself. Is Islam "the religion of peace"? Some say yes and some say no. Read it and form your own educated opinion.

Easy to read and understand. The negative reviews of this book and in comparison to the bible is nonsense. It's a BOOK. it's not meant to be better or worse than the Bible. To each his own beliefs and religion. Saying this, this book is easily understandable and easy to read. Good content and interesting to learn the different views in this world.

The quality of the physical book was absolutely treated with utter disregard. Uneven pages, to where they would be sticking out and not evenly cut, some of the pages were creased and printed on, print was smudged done over creases so that some is unreadable... some pages torn. I’ve never seen a book sold like this ever. That and the fact that it’s the Quran and treated this way I’d highly disrespectful and then add the fact it made it out the door!!! ????

Bought this to further my knowledge in world history and religion. This is my first time reading a Quran- I want an understanding of the worlds 2nd largest religion. Item arrived quick and in great condition.

This is my first time reading the Qur'an and I am enjoying the English translation thus far. It is an easy read and understandable.

This is a scholarly masterpiece English translation of the Holy Qur'an, which not only devout Muslims should read, but any man that regards himself as being cultured.

It was not well assembled in that a lot of the pages were bent or oddly cut, but I wanted it for the contents so I am okay with the condition.

The Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) over 1400 years ago and it is truly an inspiration. There is nothing in it that can be associated with evil. It is constantly written that God is One and has no associated, no partners, no sons, no daughters. He is Beneficent, Merciful, Oft-Forgiving and Merciful!

I really liked how it was very easy to read and comprehend. The translation was great. It’s a must have for those whose primary language is English!

Very easy to read. I have always enjoy reading Yusuf Ali translation. I'm man who believes that quran can bring peace to all if read correctly, whether we are Jews, Christian and Muslims the quran respects all religion.

I'm a old schooler. I like the Victorian English, which are closest to a human language. The curbed originality and the sincerity that shake my heart. Alas, the first few pages say this is an edited work. O well whatever. Nevertheless, 4 Stars for crunching on.

Has many typos. I have a paper copy of this book. It would be nice if the typos were fixed. I would change my review.

I downloaded the book because I read Dr. Malachi Z. York's books. He usually uses Yusuf Ali's English translation of the Quran. I am not a Muslim, nor do I believe in any religions. It's just for research.

This volume of the The Holy Qur`an is as blessed as the larger volume I reviewed, but with only the English translation and the commentary, it is of a size that can be easily held and studied in the hand. One cannot replace the other, but this version is much easier to use on a daily basis.

I am Catholic and very content in my religious beliefs. I bought this to try and learn about other religions and this was a good copy as far as I can tell.

I brought this for a friend that explained to me, the Quran is translated by a lot of people and this person uses a lot of big words and keeps it moving. Lol he explained that there wasn’t much breakdown but it was still understandable!

Required marriage to a six year old and having sex when she is six. Woman have half he brain of a man. Man is required to beat his wife once a month by tieing her to a whipping post out in front of their home, and use a rod no bigger than his thumb.

The English is archaic and maybe not native English speaking quality, but most of the concepts are still understandable. This must be one of the most popular English translations, since there are many editions of this one (this is the 14th edition)

This paperback version of The Qur'an was just as good as any other that I've read, but if you plan to rely on it for daily use, then obvioulsy you'll need to buy one with a more reliable quality - perhaps a leather-cover or hardcover one.

Able to easily read such a profound and influential holy scripture as a paperback.

Classic translation by Abdullah Yusuf, enlightening and life affirming as ever, but missing his invaluable commentary. Still worth a look if you are not interested in all that, personally, I think a lot is lost by the exclusion especially those looking for a scholarly examination of the Qur'an which is hard to come by.

Took a bit longer to arrive than expected but nonetheless, I was glad when I received it. Even got a little bookmark.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali's translation of the Qur'an is considered one of the best by region scholars.I teach religion at a community college and use this translation along with a scholarly annotated edition. I highly recommend it.

Yeah--It was GREAT!! AS soon AS I got it, I took it out back and burned it into less than dust!! Just what I bought it for! Never seen anything burn so easily! Might by another one! Best $8 I ever spent!!

Every Christian and Atheist should read this glorious book. There is a chapter on every major Old Testament prophet and on Mary mother of Jesus. The prophets as presented in the Qur'an are much nicer and nobler people than in the Bible. The violence is muted and the prophets are not envious or lustful. The references to modern scientific knowledge is amazing and accurate. The Qur'an speaks of planets having orbits and paths and that the universe is always expanding. All true by the way, but only recently confirmed by modern researchers. Before repeating what you hear in the news you should read this book with an open mind.

Excellent interpretation of the Quran

it is good to gain insight into what all the conflict between Christians and Muslims is about. I mean it doesn't explain it per say what I mean is I can now see and sort of understand the differences and the similarities between the two religions-why there is war between the two still escapes me..

Excellent translation of the Holy Quran.

I ordered this for a friend. I wish it had commentary like the hard cover copy I have, but it's a good interpretation. Also a reasonable size to carry around.

I haven't made it all the way through this book... but, as I continue to read I find new ways of thinking about what I believe and solidify what I have always thought... there is more that we have in common than not. I am looking forward to finishing this book... so, I can start again. I am sure I will read this many many times over many many years. I will always be Catholic... but, expanding my understanding in other religions helps me understand the world around me and have a deeper understanding of my own faith. I would highly recommend this interpretation of the Quran... it is not difficult to read (requires focus and thoughtful reading) and seems more "modern" in language than other versions I have previewed.

Does this even need a review

Almost no typographic errors. Good format and essay index. The translation and style made it easy to understand and pleasant to read aloud.

I would like to say that this book is certainly worth one's while to have on your shelf. I find that I tend to prefer Shakir's translation (or if you prefer, interpretation), but both do an excellent job of applying the Early Modern English of the King James Bible to the Qur'an. I mention this because Yusuf Ali made a conscious decision to be not arcane, but archaic; the King James Bible has remained as popular as it has because of its elevated style, and attempts by Qur'an translators to use the same kind of language, then as now, were attempts to pay the Qur'an the highest compliment by using the highest language available in English. In fact, I would argue that both Yusuf Ali and Shakir's translations (I've not read others in their entirety) use archaism often to greater effect than in some parts of the Bible. I mention this because the "revised" edition of Yusuf Ali's interpretation distributed by Tahrike Tarsile Qur'an, Inc. completely removes the translator's original archaisms (i.e., the use of "thee" and "thou," etc.) in an effort to make it more accessible to modern readers (I can't stand this choice for my own reading, although I now use that edition to lend to friends who are interested in an introduction). In terms of parenthetical additions to the text (I don't know if there is a more technical term for these kinds of glosses), I could frankly do without them in either translation--although I understand this is often standard practice--I feel that both tend to make up for what at least beginners might consider the other's shortcomings. It is certainly worth buying in conjunction with Shakir's for the latter's topical index in its Tahrike Tarsile edition. One thing that beginners might also wish to consider is that to my understanding, Yusuf Ali's translation is more respected among Sunnis whereas Shakir's, among Shi'ites. (Does anyone know if there is an English translation particularly respected among Sufis?) One might wish to consider if interested in Yusuf Ali's translation is that for the most part, he does not use the Arabic, but rather the Western (Biblical) names for most of the Prophets. For instant, Isa bin Maryum becomes "Jesus, Son of Mary." I do not know whether this is a desire to simply use English names for the sake of translation, or to make his interpretation more accessible to the West or to the Western-educated, but people should keep in mind that Yusuf Ali himself was a Western-educated man in what was at the time of his interpretation's publication British India. Those who come from Western backgrounds like myself will probably find this a useful convention if seeking an introduction; I am a firm believer in cross-cultural understanding, and to that end I would ask those who would prefer the Arabic names of the Qur'an to have patience with this choice of the translator. And frankly, any little thing that could help give Westerners an easier time understanding of Islam is especially crucial in this day and age, what with the "burqa" laws of France, the Low Countries, and even (sadly) Québec; Little Mosque On The Prairie is a valuable cultural touchstone, but it can only do so much. Finally, although I am myself an atheist, I would like to mention one thing about this particular edition for the benefit of observant Muslims. Namely, that this is a Wordsworth Library Edition, and as such it contains a portrait of the English poet William Wordsworth on its spine. Now for reasons both annoy and mistify me, the publisher will often put Wordsworth's portrait on the front cover as well, although the Qur'an has fortunately been spared this embarassment. Not that what remains is particularly conspicuous either; the miniature portrait on the spine can't be more than one square half-inch, but it is there nonetheless.

This is a translation very easy to read. A good one especially for those who is going to read the Quran for the first time.

I bought this translation of the Quran (Tafsir) and it is great. I actually gave it to my friend to read because she was interested in Islam and now has become a Muslim. Abdullah Yusuf Ali has a great translation and love his work.

Great price for the English Reader. The book appears to be made from recycled paper. I am not excited about the paper. The cover is beautiful and well-constructed. I am so grateful for the affordability of this translation of the meaning of the Quran. I purchased ten.

I had a previous copy (2003) by the same author but this version, purchased purposely for content, was NOT the same. Chapter introductions were missing from this version. I missed that difference in my review of the book online. I found that most of my students did not like this old English version and purchased their own from another source. Strangely, they all show the same author, who died in the late 1800, but their vesions were dated much, much later. I did not understand how the author could be the same after his death.

I am of the Christian faith and I needed to confirm some allegations about Islam that were recently given to me. I do not read Arabic, or whatever the language is that the Qur'an is written in. I was aware there are English translations. After reviewing the various volumes available on Amazon, I picked this one as being likely to be as accurate as possible in the English language. It served it's purpose, and now keeps a place on my bookshelf. If you have questions about what the Qur'an says on a given subject, this book appears to be a good translation.

There are numerous translations of the Koran into English. The A.Y. Ali translation is in the top 10 on my list.

I got this to learn more about "the others", i.e. other religions, in this case Islam, but I also have the Holy books of other religions. I don't find it very "reader-friendly", just ok. The content seems very repetitive & contradictory; not sure if it's due to a 'loss in translation' or that's just the way it is!

Don't really know what else to say really, amazing...Muslim or not this book from god shows the most perfect way to live your life free from sin, be happy/peaceful and give thanks to your creator for creating you. Font is perfect size and print is good. Not a hardback, but it should last long. arrived maybe a few days late but it was understandable 5/5.

The Holy word of Allah compares to no other Holy book. Allah is the one and only God. This English translation is missing the original Arabic, which makes it okay for the beginner, but it makes it harder to reference for prayer. Overall, a great place for new reverts to begin!

There are so many repetitive comments....such small print it's hard for me to read. Difficult English translations. I would appreciate the ok to return it and get a different one....easier for me to understand.

This is a top quality paperback book with very clear print on bright, white paper. If I can manage to get my western brain wrapped around the eastern thoughts, maybe I'll be able to learn and understand?

Read every single page (close to 530). Praise be to allah , Most gracious , Most merciful : * Charity , Believers = The Hereafter with homes that have rivers under it, Unbelievers= Hellfire, DO NOT make friends with the unbelievers or you will become on of them. Basically you either get down with allah and the cause or suffer a miserable existence forever. Typical of the Christian religion as well. In summary it starts off honest enough then gets super violent and super redundant. I got through it though. Now I can argue against it with the best of them.

Good guide to basic beliefs of Islam. Like Bible it provides respectful guidance to the time of its origin with similar lessons in Do(s) and Don't(s). Highly recommend this religious book, sacred to the followers of Muhammad with a belief that no difference can be used to justify bias between TRUE believers in invisible and indivisible GOD!
