Terrific companion. Focuses on the props.

Amazing attention to detail.

This fourth book in the series focuses primarily on the props, costumes, and sets that were built for the Hobbit movies. Reading through this, its pretty mind blowing to see just how much detail and work goes into making a movie like this. Most people never think about the difference between elven and dwarvish eathing utensils for instance. The artists and designers of the movie certainly do however. A large amount of time goes into designing and building the props, some of which may only be on screen for seconds at most. Costumes is another area where there is just an insane amount of work and detail involved. Take footwear for instance. There are 13 dwarves in the films, each needing there own individual set of boots that had to be designed and then crafted from scratch. The way the movie is shot there are also large and small scale doubles for the actors, that is how they can make 6 foot tall actors appear as 4 foot tall dwarves. So there you have to add in extra pairs of boots for the scale doubles. They then also made lightweight versions that the actors could wear in scenes where they were fighting or running. On top of that you can add shoes for the stunt doubles and each of the 13 dwarves needed something like 7 - 8 pairs of hand crafted boots, and that's just the dwarves! It really makes you appreciate how much work is involved.

Another Beautiful Book

After getting two of these Hobbit books compiled by Weta designer Daniel Falconer I knew I had to get them all because they are such beautiful books that celebrate all the hard work, dedication, ingenuity, skill and imagination of all the master craftsmen that worked on the films. This book was no exception. If you like to see the planning stages of costumes, armor, weaponry, props and scenery this book is for you. I love seeing everything in the planning stages of what they originally planned and then how it ended up looking. It’s also nice to see up close the weaponry and costumes as well as read the actors’ comments. My favorites are the elves, particular Thranduil. I love all the beautiful photos of his rings, broaches, staff, sword and costumes as well as the commentary from the amazing staff creating the looks as well as from actor Lee Pace. There’s input from many of the actors who played elves, dwarves and others. They also go into great detail about Biblo Baggins’ Hobbit village with lots of photos. This is a beautiful coffee table book that will be fun to look at and share with friends and others who love the Hobbit series.

Arguably the Best Book in the Series

Great reference book that takes one behind the scenes of the Hobbit trilogy. One thing that I have enjoyed the most about the Middle Earth movies is Weta Workshop’s attention to detail, even in little things that may never actually be seen on screen. This book has page after page of gorgeous pictures that focus on the physical armor, costuming, and weapons of the Hobbit trilogy. The author also takes time to focus on the different disciplines, ranging from dyeing to metal craft, required to create such wonderful art. This is probably my favorite book of the seven-part Hobbit art book series.

This army of Weta artists and creatives have stunned us again. Some of the finest work being done on the planet!!

Another super Weta volume of wonderful art that lets you in on the creative process - basically how they arrived at perfection from A to Z. As this stable of inventive and gifted artists mull over what Smaug should look like - indeed, what every weapon, character and stitch of costume will finally look like, you have the honor of "sitting on their shoulder" and rummage through the myriad choices that (ultimately) Peter Jackson had to make to pull everything into one breathtaking, coordinated world. God bless these hardworking people! I own every title in the series. Take your time with these. This kind of work should be savored, studied, and admired. (In this case, the ANGELS are in the details!)

Binding problem

This book out of the six volumes that cover the three pars of The Hobbit movie seems to have some binding problems. The glue to attach the hardcover to the bulk of the book seems to have lost it's pliability, I had to return one from another online retailer as I thought the close fitting box had damaged the book, but now I think there be an inherent weakness in this book's run, and the rough handling only exacerbated it.

Amazing Attention to Detail

Such amazing attention to detail went into creating the "Hobbit" movies, and this book documents extensively what extraordinary effort was put into creating the gorgeous costumes, sets and props used in the movies -- down to the last button, belt buckle, and jar label. Definitely an inexhaustible resource for fans who want an up-close look at how Tolkien's world was intricately translated into Peter Jackson's films. Not only will it give you an appreciation for all the effort that went into them, but also an appreciation for the film-making process in general. The funny insights from the cast members are a plus!

My favorite one so far in the The Hobbit Chronicle series!

This book is my favorite one so far as i love costumes and weapons!!! It focuses on how the specialist artisans bring the films to life with their skills. This book presents the fine works of sculptors, costume makers, dyers, armorers, jewellers, leather-workers, prop-makers, and etc. All the props needed, even the food props, for the movies are in it. So, it’s totally awesome! In addition, a full photo of market in Hobbiton is attached to the back cover and this market is only seen in the extended version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Highly recommended for fans and those who interested in prop-making or even cosplay!

I can't recommend them highly enough

Each one of this series of WETA hobbit companion books has been well done - each outshining the previous in the series. The latest one is no exception. The photographs are insightful. The accompanying essays are revealing introductions to the behind the scenes movie material that Tolkien fans find so interesting. I can't recommend them highly enough. I'm waiting for the final two that will accompany The Battle of Five Armies. Peter Jackson & company have been well served as has Professor Tolkien.

Excellent companion to the movies

We all loved the books, and enjoyed all the movies. The books are fun and really interesting. They're almost better than the extras on the DVDs. We all have really like all the behind the scenes information, and the actors talking about their parts. The history and the making of the different characters, and their weapons and costumes is fascinating. If you like the movies; you'll love the books.

Book looks great! Thank you!

Costumes and props are what I love most about the Hobbit trilogy

Costumes and props are what I love most about the Hobbit trilogy; wish they'd created a book like this for LOTR as well. This is a beautiful coffee-table book, high-quality paper with great close-up photos of details on costumes, weapons, props, etc. Excellent resource for LORP and COSPLAY folks, or anyone who wants to live in middle earth. More please!

Thw Hobbit Chronicles, series two

This is part of an amazing series of books detailing various topics about the making of the Hobbit films. In this one, deatils are given about armor, weapons, set dressing, fabrics used to make the films more real. Great care was given to these details, right down to the color and texture of fabrics. Filled with beautifiul pictures and commentary by the artisans who produced these items. Hobbit fans will love it.

Can't put it down.

My collection is up to date again after Christmas! These books are the cream of the crop when it comes to well produced, lovely art, informative novels! Love the series, can hardly stop reading. Can't say I was a big fan of the movies ("the first trilogy was better") but the astounding work that hundreds of people went through to bring it to the screen is as fascinating as ever! Great purchase!

A must have for hobbit/LOTR fan. Really mind blowing to see the details that go into making one small scene, and how much we miss while watching a movie. Peter Jackson should make a museum and display all these wonderful arts and artifacts and accessories that were so painstakingly created. I am sure a lot of people would love visiting and seeing that in real!

Love these Weta books - love em!

Loved this book - so right now i have one more of these Weta Books to get - the one on the Hobbits - well - that is until November when they come out with the 6th book - on Orcs and the more colorful characters that make up this insane realm! I can't wait!

Sweet!

Item arrived in near pristine condition. Love it!

Depends on what you want

I was hoping for something like the Lord of the Rings Weapons and Warfare book, where it tells the story of all the weapons and armor like you're in the story. This is more about costume and weapon designing. Don't get me wrong it's a good book with good pictures and information and probably worth the money, but I was hoping for something else.

I've been working on some replica costumes from the movies and this book was extremely helpful, especially for Tauriel's costume!

Very disappointed with the condition of this "new" book.

VERY DISAPPOINTED. The book spine is damaged as well as a tear on the front cover. This is a gift, and really disappointed to give it in this condition. I didn't pay for a "second" but feel that is the quality of this book.

The Best Book in the Best Series!

Masterful, detailed and awe-inspiring...better than the previous books in the series

If you enjoyed either the Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit movies, this book is a serious must have. I'm a bit of a behind the scenes and design nut, so I have all of the previous volumes in this series of Hobbit companion volumes, and this is by far the best. The sheer detail and number of the photographs, the thoroughness of coverage of the props, set dressing, costumes, armor, weaponry, jewelry and the people and processes that went into them is mind-boggling. I've been waiting for this one since Christmas and the wait was worth it! A quick note for those who love the extended edition version of the movies and their special features: if you were missing some of the detail of the LOTR versions on costumes, design, and fabrication...it is here but way better.

Checking out the Finer (design) Details of The Hobbit

besides the flashy (and gradually not so flashy) costumes, theres the unsung artisans on the back ground with the props and pottery.... you'd come to appreciate what it takes for the vast expertise coming together for this movie...inventory/ co-ordination is just mind-boggling. recommended for those who love the film and into details/ design of the various craft behind this epic movie...or need to complete their Hobbit Chronicles.

Five Stars

It's amazing and awesome best thing ever!

Excellent

Absolutely Brilliant

Oh Boy! Where do I start and end. First of all I love the films so read this review only if you like them. This one is a beast of a book and a gem. Beautifully packaged with tons and tons of preproduction and production work on designs and props , something which will bring delight to the Tolkien fans and fans of the movies . This book tells you how much craft went into the movie and the quality of it . Not often do you see so much details and dedication behind a movie project and the Middle Earth film series and it's companion books are a level apart.from the rest. WETA is absolutely amazing . You will find various excerpts from the conceptual designers to the production designer and the set decorator. Anybody who loves to see armor ? Who doesn't! There are plenty of them. Now the difference between Cloaks & Daggers and the art chronicles is that these are actual image of every meticulous prop created for the movie , atleast plenty that goes unnoticed in the movies. It mainly focuses on set dressing rather than designing. The details of them where as the art chronicles were on the conceptual to real aspect of it . And this one actually has images of weapons , armor , costumes , wine bottles , gold coins : You name it - It is there. So it's a must buy. Save some money and buy this. The quality of the book is admirable

I personally never got bored of reading the author's (Daniel Falconer) interviews of all ...

The Hobbit Chronicles books by WETA are an absolute piece of art and is a must for every movie fan of Peter Jackson's LOTR and Hobbit movies. This books provides an extensive backstage overview of all the magnificient craft and design that went into creating the costumes, looks and props for the films. Each character is visited again one by one, and we get a very thorough overview of all the details of the props each character carries that you would never notice in film, but it all ads to the magic of the film. I personally never got bored of reading the author's (Daniel Falconer) interviews of all the wonderful artists who had made the films. It's a very heavily illustrated book with at least 1000 photos of high detail. They should not be missed!

A must buy for any Tolkien fan.

What a lovely book. It compliments the other five books in the series by looking at all the props and costumes in The Hobbit films and how they were created. Fantastic photos and great descriptions.

what can you say

What can you say about anything to do with Tolkien Get it its beautiful and full of facts and pictures that bring the film to life

Good book

All is good with the book. Fast shipping and receiving. Thanks

Beautiful book

Beautifully designed and illustrated. Will make a stunning book for collection..bought as birthday present

Pétition traduction française the hobbit cloaks and daggers

in depth look into the work that goes into making the film

for the film buff and fojjowers of the lord of the ring, this is an in depth look into the making of i've actually collected the full book collection brilliant

Beautiful book for any Hobbit fan

I enjoy not only the superbly done contents and the cover of the book, but also the many quotes from the actors and movie producers. Tons of beautiful photos too!

Must have

Great book! Amazing photos and designs like the other three books in the series! Definitely a must have for all Tolkien fans!

Package need to be improved to protect the book

the package has too much room inside, so the package could not propect the corners of the book.

Four Stars

Enjoyed reading this book

The Hobbit Chroniques cinq

A recommandé.

Five Stars

Absolutely Stunning book, a must have for any fan of Peter Jacksons middle earth films.

impeccable

a avoir dans sa bibliotheque

Great book with many high-res photos of props and costumes. Highly recommended!

excellent

Excellent quality, a must for hobbit fans

Magnifique.
