Hundreds of hardy people have tried to carve a living in the Alaskan bush, but few have succeeded as consistently as Heimo Korth. Originally from Wisconsin, Heimo traveled to the Arctic wilderness in his twenties. Now, more than three decades later, Heimo lives with his wife and two daughters approximately 200 miles from civilization—a sustainable, nomadic life bounded by the migrating caribou, the dangers of swollen rivers, and by the very exigencies of daily existence.
In The Final Frontiersman, Heimo’s cousin James Campbell chronicles the Korth family’s amazing experience, their adventures, and the tragedy that continues to shape their lives. With a deft voice and in spectacular, at times unimaginable detail, Campbell invites us into Heimo’s heartland and home. The Korths wait patiently for a small plane to deliver their provisions, listen to distant chatter on the radio, and go sledding at 44 degrees below zero—all the while cultivating the hard-learned survival skills that stand between them and a terrible fate.
Awe-inspiring and memorable, The Final Frontiersman reads like a rustic version of the American Dream and reveals for the first time a life undreamed by most of us: amid encroaching environmental pressures, apart from the herd, and alone in a stunning wilderness that for now, at least, remains the final frontier.

I heard of the book on LIFE BELOW ZERO, Glenn Villeneuve mentioned it. It's a realist description of living in "the bush" and trapping/hunting for a living. Includes the challenges and struggles of trying to survive alone and in a relationship AND with a family. Also discusses the politics of oil, wilderness, freedom, and government interference and decisions by people who sit in warm offices. A good read, as they say...
Wilderness Family Struggles
I first saw the Last Alaskans reality series on TV. This book fills in all the details and much, much more. First it is one of the best accounts of how unbelievably difficult it is to LIVE in Alaska's wilderness all year, especially with a family! It's the hazardous and unpredictable weather, difficulty earning money to provide for supplies and transportation, dangerous animals and rivers/terrain and the unpredictable availability of meat and fur. But the most difficult is raising a family there. This true story is the struggle of one man to balance his powerful love for this kind of living off the land vs his love of family and providing the needs of his wife and children. Particularly, the children need contact with people and a good education to enable them to make a choice of how they want to live once on their own. The balancing of sacrifices of adults vs children's needs makes a familiar struggle, although in the extreme here to most families on the grid The author does a great job telling the story in a style that never bores. This story is for dreamers, outdoor couples, adventure lovers, parents, and has much in adventure and food for thought for anyone and everyone! Highly recommended!

Anyone who is interested in Alaska should read this book. Very well written account of Heimo's life in the most remote part of Alaska. I am a fan of the series Last Alaskan's and have a much better idea of how and why Heimo went there to live in the wilderness alone and why he stays. The book explains very well about the dangers of rivers, hunting, the remoteness, miles of traveling on foot for food and surviving the severe cold that can get down to 50 below zero that most of us who had never experienced it don't have a a good understanding of what it actually takes to live there. I've read several books about Alaska and this one goes right to the top of my list.
Moments of the sun's silence
After watching "The Last Alaskans" and enjoying the show it is a pleasure to read this story to fully understand the real story behind Heimo and Edna North. Just a small glimpse into what makes them the way they are and their experiences was very interesting. This book combined with the tv show makes me feel as though I've known them for a lifetime. Wonderful story !
A Difficult and Sometimes Heartbreaking Pursuit of Happinesss in the Alaskan Wilderness
An excellent book. 5 stars given without reservation. I've admired Heimo and Edna Korth since first watching the TV Show "The Last Alaskans" and Braving Alaska. If you've ever thought of just leaving it all behind and heading off into the wilderness—or just wish that you could—this is one book you'll want to read. Heimo and his wife Edna make a life in the last true wilderness of Alaska, living primarily off the land. James Campbell did an excellent job with this book.
Fabulous book
If you like watching the show "The Last Alaskans" you will love this book. It gives you an insight into the personality and background of Heimo Korth and his family. Heimo is truly a frontiersman who knows how to survive under the most adverse conditions. Whether you want to live off the land or not this book gives you a great insight into living in the wild and is also very entertaining. I highly recommend it.
Awesome book! Can't wait to get to it!
I'm SO excited to read this book! It arrived in just 2 days, packaged well. Beautiful cover photo of Heimo. (I create book covers, among other things so I appreciate the work that goes into them. ) Just finished this book tonight. Gosh, what a great escape. I wish I could have sat and read it cover to cover but i'm not blessed with that kind of time. A great read, well put together, you never lose sight that the author is sitting with them, telling this story. Hardships, family and living a minimal existence, yet it fuels the fire in this old man, 'if only'. But I've had a great life and like Heimo's life, it has been mine.
A true frontiersman
I don’t ordinarily watch the Alaska reality shows, but have found The Last Alaskans a very thoughtfully and beautifully filmed show. I especially found Heimo Korth and his wife, Edna, to be very engaging and attractive personalities. So when I saw that the television show was derived from this book, I decided to read the book and was not disappointed. The book gives much background on Heimo and his family and the choices they have made to live a subsistence lifestyle in a very harsh and unforgiving environment. If you enjoy the television show, you will very much enjoy the book. And even if you haven’t seen the show, you will find the book to be an amazing documentary of people who have decided to live in the Alaskan bush.
The Book was excellent, and I fully enjoyed it
The Book was excellent, and I fully enjoyed it, brought you a more in depth look into the lives of Both Heimo and Edna, Their personal lives before and after they met and their lives and tragety they suffered together concerning their first daughter together after getting married. The Show on Discovery, The Last Alaskins give you an understanding of their lives out there and what they have to do to servive, and this book gives you more of an understand of everything that has gone on concerning the refuge, and what people that are still there are having to go though to stay and live there. If I was younger, I would of chose this lifestyle, and been more content with having less tan all this modern lifestyle or rules and regulations..to live free...
Hard to put down.
Wow! I just this book yesterday (8/25/2019) I'm on chapter 4 and I hate putting it down. Ever single word just brings up closer and closer to the experience. So far this book as taught me one thing we really live a very materialistic life. I feel I am rather primitive but not really after reading this so far. I am very envious of Heimo and family wish I could do it. Too many materialistic things holding me here. I will try to update the review once I am finished. However even though I would like to take a star or two off simple because the book was creased and pages more the crushed but I wanted to get reading asap so my advice to Amazon; do NOT ship the book in a plastic envelope, a box who have protected the book.

Good Book to read during the winter
So I got the book because of the TV show & wanted to know more about the man. In reading both of Campbells books I learned that he grew up a hard life, fought with his father, loved his mother and found himself after trying to make a go of it in the hardest place one can live & call it the U.S. The man taught his kids how to live with very little from the outside and grow. I would love to spend a weekend with him and just be able to listen to him & ask him a few question. He's is I gather one of the last of his kind. To live off the land, make a living, bring up a family & live by ones own set of rules.
Excellent book about a man and his family and their lives in the wilderness.
I have watched the TV show "The Last Alaskans" for years. One family the show introduced the audience to is Heimo Korth's. The show was great but got cancelled after a few seasons. This book is written by Heimo's cousin and gets you closer to the Korth family and their difficult lives in the Alaska wilderness. With few modern conveniences, they live in hand built cabins in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in brutal weather, living off the land in a subsistence lifestyle. After reading it, watching reruns of the show make you feel closer to the Korth family, almost like you know them. It was a hard book for me to put down and I am starting the author's book "Braving it" today. Enjoy!
A Very Unique Couple
I have seen the Korths featured in the TV series, The Last Alaskans. Of the people featured in that show, I took a special liking to Heimo and Edna. Both were so capable in every endeavor undertaken, but the love and concern for each other and their daughters was quite striking. This book provided me with a deeper knowledge of Heimo’s and Edna’s roots. He learned from being mistreated by his father to never treat anyone you love with nothing but love and understanding. This resonates with every TV episode. I admire their relationship and their treatment of others.
Fascinating Book
I have been watching The Last Alaskans on the Discovery Channel for several years and have enjoyed the show. I didn't know there was a book about Heimo and his family until recently and decided that I wanted to read it. I'm so glad I did. It's an incredible story about an extraordinary man and his family. It's such a hard life and they've endured tragedy and hardship, but never gave up their dream of living out in the wilderness. They have, without a doubt, succeeded. The TV series tells the rest of the story from where the book ends, so I would recommend both the book and the series. Both are fascinating.
You've got to read this book!
A fascinating read about "the Final Frontiersman himself! I don't think most people really understand just how difficult it would be to live this kind of a lifestyle.....you'd literally have to work you butt off every day just to keep the cabin warm and the family fed. This lifestyle is not at all for the faint of heart...or mind. This guy is a true outdoorsman and a "learned" master at staying alive and relatively comfortable. I can only imagine the massive stockpiles of firewood you'd have to have just to make it through the winter in -30 to -50 below temperatures on the extreme remote plains of the south slopes of the Brooks Range. And without plenty of ammo, traps, and meat, you'd be dead in only a few weeks in such extremes. I would not at all mind living like this guy......for about three weeks in August. An excellent description of a "chosen" lifestyle. Update to my review 03/27/15 I was lucky enough to be able to fly to Fairbanks just recently to work for a few days and something happened to me there that I'll not soon forget. On Saturday the 21st, I was able to attend an auction at Mushers Hall. This auction was put on by the Alaska Fur Trappers Association and was one of the coolest things I've ever seen! Even better was what happened while I was there!.....A guy I met and began talking to was showing me some furs he'd just purchased at the auction. One in particular was a fine raw wolf hide that he was quite proud of. As I was handling the hide, I happened to glance at the ID tag attached to it and was suddenly both shocked and elated at the same time! This wolf had been trapped and handled by none other than the Final Frontiersman himself, Heimo Korth! I immediately pointed this out to the guy who had just acquired the fur at auction (a long time Fairbanks resident) and he didn't even know who Heimo was.
What a great book.
What a great book....if you were ever curious after watching the Last Alaskans on TV, you will love this book. Makes you wish you were 20 again and made some different decisions about what you want to do in life. James Cambell told the story of Heimo and Edna and their life in the wilderness. I also purchased his other book "Braving IT" which is excellent. He and daughter also visit them again. Well worth the time to read it, couldn't put it down.
The joys and perils of life in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
This book portrays the hardships and the joys of living a truly remote existence in the wilderness of the ANWR. It is superbly written and I envy the proximity to wild nature that Heimo and Edna Korth are living. I also watched “The Last Alaskans” and I have gotten to know the Korths even better. The only problem I have with the lifestyle is their killing of so many beautiful animals that is required to maintain their lifestyle. Fur bearing animals are slowly tortured and killed by traps. We all know that “fur” is an obscene luxury and not a necessity. Heimo states, “I take nothing from the land that I don’t need”, but that is false! Wild animals are deprived of living out their lives in order for humans to have fancy coats, hats and gloves. Do not read this book or watch the TV show if you have a weak stomach when it comes to animal cruelty.
Once you start this story of a guy and his family living in the wilderness, you will not put it down until your finished.
Heimo Korth - the title, Final Frontiersman says it all. As a kid I would read books about Alaska, the Yukon, Jack London books, Heimo does it all and then some. He says he read a book about Daniel Boone when he was a kid and that started his quest. After reading this, I'm not sure Daniel Boone could have kept up with this guy. Besides that he has his entire family with him in the absolute wild. The cliché is you start reading and you can't put it down. If you love the outdoors and have ever thought about trying to survive on your own this is the book for you.
A wonderful read
I rated this a 5 star book based on how well it kept my interest. A good read will do that. I felt as though I was right there, running the trap line, watching the girls play, listening to the easy conversation between family members. I worried when someone wasn't feeling well, hoped for successful hunts and felt somewhat sad when I finished the book. I could have done with a little less history of the things that went on between different frontiersmen and the government but that information would probably be welcomed by some readers. I had seen the documentary first and because of it especially enjoyed the book, being able to picture both Edna and Heimo, the sound of their voices and patterns of speech. The book was well written, James Campbell did an excellent job of telling the story. My only regret is there is not a sequel. (Mr. Campbell that WAS a hint. For anyone who has ever dreamed about living such an isolated life I think you would enjoy this. I also learned quite a bit about Alaska and the Arctic Circle. The book piqued my interest to read more about both, independent of the book. A door opener to increasing my own knowledge base.
This book is about REAL life in the Alaskan refuge
This book is great! If you’ve never seen the show “Last Alaskans” you should watch it. This book is about one of the seven people/families who live in the Alaskan refuge. This book, about Heimo Korth, is a good look into his life. He and his wife, Edna, raised their children there and they actually lost a child there. They are the epitome of real life in Alaska with no running water or electricity.
Great book!
We watch "The Last Alaskans" on TV & our favorite has always been Heimo Korth & his wife Edna. When I saw that he had a book, I bought it for my husband. He started reading right away & is loving it. It's especially nice to read if you watch the show. It gives you Heimo's story & how he happened to become one of the "Last Alaskans" in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. A recommended read for fans of the show!
Good Documentary Type of Book
Read this book as part of a book club. Definitely not something I would have selected personally. However, I enjoyed it much more than expected. It is well written and catches you interest. The only problem was that in this particular edition, the type is so small it was difficult to read. Made me wish I had spent the extra money to get the Kindle version.
If you like the tv series the last Alaskans this is Heimo's story.
I love the story of Heimos journey and the. The family stories with Edna and the girls. Their story of both joy and and deep sorrow is consuming. The writing of the story I found questionable by way of the complex words used so frequently in the story. I would call myself reasonably well educated and read but yet found myself wondering why so many $100 words were needed to describe what was supposed to be the life of a simple man??
Heimo war born to be a trapper
Though i have not finished the book as yet, it is absolutely spellbinding. I envy Heimo in his persistence and good fortune. It seems that he is blessed with having his dreams come true. A quote from Heimo on his TV show ‘. “If there was a pill that would let me live for another 100 years I would want to be right here”.
A good, yet long-winded read..
I purchased this for my wife, for Christmas, and she flew through it. I grabbed it and took three weeks to work through it. The author takes an approach of alternating current (2002/time of writing) experiences with historical background of the region, peoples, politics, etc. That said, if you've ever enjoyed an episode of "The Last Alaskans", this background knowledge really enhances your viewing experience.
A look into Heimo and Edna Korth’s lives.
I loved the Last Alaskans show on the Discovery channel and was hoping for more on Heimo and Edna’s lives since the show ended. This book was written before the show, so I was familiar with most everything in the book. James Campbel does go into more detail than the show, which was appreciated.
Wow, Great read
I started watching The Last Alaskans reality series on Discovery a few years ago. The first show of the fourth season one of the trappers on the series mentioned a book about Heimo that he had read before actually meeting his wife, Karin, Heimo and Edna’s daughter. At that moment I knew I needed to read the book. It is amazing to read about a person you’ve come to admire and find out why he made the choices he made to live in the Alaskan bush for the greater part of his life.
Husband Loved It!
This book arrived yesterday morning, 19 July 2017 and this book was finished by evening 19 July 2017 by the Hubs...LOL!~ He couldn't put it down and said it was really good. Now onto ordering him Mr. Campbell's second book, Braving It.
A great story, about a great man
If you like "The Last Alaskan's", NOT the bush people; this book is for you! It completes the background history of Heimo and his family. Gets a little detailed (wordy) on the politics of Alaska, but overall helps guide the how and why of the history of Heimo and those like him (spoiler alert, you find out there are others similar to Heimo). It also relates Hiemo's problems and adversities, makes him all that much more real.
Mountain Man Dream Went Poof
I met James Campbell when he gave a presentation for the upcoming 2010 Appleton Book Festival. He will be one of the featured authors. When he spoke of The Final Frontiersman, I couldn't wait to order the book. You see, my fantasy has been to become a "mountain man" ever since, decades ago, I saw a movie by a similar title. The solitude, the nature, the purity, the chopping your own wood, peppered my dream. And even though I'm over the hill for such an adventure, it still lingers . . . or I should say, lingered until I read The Final Frontiersman. It reads like a well-written novel but is chillingly authentic and hard to put down. I became involved with the Korth family and the difficult struggle of maintaining that kind of life. I don't envy the lifestyle any longer - that envy has turned to admiration for the skill, discipline, strength, and endurance such a lifestyle demands. This is one book I will keep on my shelf, as I would with anything that deserves a place of honor, not only for the author, but more impressively for Heimo Korth.
good read
I saw Heimo on TV and my wife bought me the book. I do not read a lot but this book was intriguing and I finished it in a couple of days. I enjoyed the adventures and true life situations. Heimo and Edna are the real deal.
MUST READ
This is a great book!!! The life and stories of the Korth family, beautifully written by an author who went there and lived it!!! You can watch all the TV shows you want, but if you want to know the real deal, the people, the history, the every day life in AK, this is your book.
Good story about an amazing family
As a huge fan of Discovery's "The Last Alaskans" I was thrilled to find this book about Heimo and Edna Korth. I was hoping for more detail about what everyday life is like for them, but what was told did not disappoint. The story didn't quite flow smoothly, as it felt a bit "choppy", which is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars, but I would definitely recommend it.
The Last Alaskans
If you are a fan of the show, you will love this and getting to know Heimo, Edna, Rhonda, abd Krin before the show. What I learned about Heimo's early life and the girl's personalities as youngsters and teenagers was surprising. I wish there had been more about their lives leading up to what I know about this wonderful family from The Last Alaskans. Worth the price of admission.
Great book I loved the parts about Heimo
Great book I loved the parts about Heimo. It did go into the legal status of the land in Alaska though which didn't interest me much. That made parts of the book drag for me but i really did enjoy reading about Heimo Korth which is why i bought the book
An amazing family
My husband enjoys the series The Last Alaskans so when I found this book I purchased it immediately. All through his reading of the book he shared passages and stories with me so I decided to read it too. This is not the kind of book I normally read but I enjoyed the book very much and I feel that this book enhances the television series.
MM
It was an awesome read, a real page turner. I was well written and I became a real fan of Hiemo Korth and his family. The author put you there in his writing. Too bad there wasn't a sequel written to my knowledge.
Great book
I was intrigued by this book about the Korths in Alaska. We watch The Last Alaskans on the Discovery channel. The Korth family is amazing. This book explains much about Alaska and those who have lived in the back country.
The last
Got this book and another by the same writer regarding Hemo and his family, for my husband. We’d like to think we could survive the Alaska north... but ya pretty sure we would be some bears dinner.
Amazing Family
This family amazed me living in the Alaskan wilderness so far from civilization. I learned a lot about the history of Alaska and the pipeline reading this book. I recommend it for fans of wilderness living and survival stories.
Alaskan Wilderness Inhabitants
If you love to read stories of real people who make their harsh lives in the Alaskan Wilderness, then this story is just that. Heimo Korth is a celebrity of sorts since featuring in the tv series "The Last Alaskans". How did he get there and with his wife and daughters, live by what the wilderness offered up?
Great read.
One of those books that once you start reading - almost impossible to put down. Enjoy the "Last Alaskan's" show and the Korth family (Edna and the extended families) living a life I would loved to have tried, had I known Alaska was such a beautiful state of vast wilderness. Heimo is a "mans" man and living his dream to the fullest. Reading the book the way it is written is so descriptive that you feel like you are there experiencing it.
EXCELLENT
I enjoy 'THE LAST ALASKANS ' show and after reading this book I know more about Heimo and his family. I highly recommend this book and I wish I was thirty years younger and able to join them in Alaska. The story is excellent and VERY well written.
Better than "Yukon Men"...
If you like all the alaska TV shows, this is better. It takes you to the farthest reaches of Alaska and what it's like to really make your home in the isolated interior. The difference between this book and say, "yukon men" is that you see more details in the cabin, you get to observe closely what it is to hunt for food, you feel the pain of losing a child on the river, you understand how the offspring need to go find their own way in life. You get texture, without all the commercials. It's a quick read you'll probably want to go back and skim through again just to relive it all.
Full of adventure!
Great telling of the Korth's story. The author delivers the family's Alaskan adventure with ease and a matter of fact telling. Loved it! The book I received didn't have the same cover as the one pictures in the listing, but I guess that is ok
A fantastic read, filled, adventure with joy and sorrow.
A fantastic read, filled, adventure with joy and sorrow. I loved reading this book and wished it was longer. The Kroth’s seem like such a great family. I really enjoyed Campbell’s recounts of life out in the Arctic
Very well written book!!!
This is a very well written book with an incredible true story line!!! It's well worth your time to read. Once you start, you won't be able to put it down! Fascinating, compelling and full of twists and turns when you least expect it. Congratulations to the author on doing such a great job with his research and telling this story!
The Reality
This is one of the best written, wonderfully descriptive books I have read in a long time. Beautiful storytelling about an amazing man, in the most beautiful place on this planet. I would urge anyone who enjoys a factual story about what it means to truly live, to read this book.
Excellent read.
If you watch Alaska the last Frontier , this book is a must read. There is much back story about life in the arctic refuge. It is well written with humor interlaced throughout. If you don't watch the show you will still not want to miss this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Challenges in Alaska
Liked to hear about Heimo & his family's daily life, but not about politics. Also, I expected to read about his experiences with larger wildlife (ie. bears, moose, etc.), but none were included in the book. All those years in Alaska & no detailed stories about this? Good read though.
Loving Heimo, great read.
After watching Heimo on television, we had to read this book. It gave my husband and I much more insight on his life prior to Alaska and Edna. We enjoyed it so much and learned a great deal that we also purchased James Campbell's book, Braving it. Don't hesitate on this purchase.
Great family story
This book lends itself to the tv show. James Campbell did a GREAT job “explaining” Heimo and the struggles he had out in the bush. Although the book was written a number of years ago and the tv show, “The Last Alaskans” has filled us in on the story of the Koran family, I can still read this story over and over again. Thank you. Are you thinking of continuing the story between the end of the book and the tv show?? Please do!!
Heimo Korth and His Family - awesome wilderness life
I like James writing - He captures the moment like you are almost there. I had to read about Heimo Korth and His Family as they had a hard but rewarding life in Alaska. I am an outdoor person too but maybe not to this extreme. I love Heimo's drive to make his life dream a reality. Worth reading to learn about Alaska and trapline life. The book gives you more than the TV program The Final Frontiersman9 which I love to watch)
Kind of envious he found such a great life. A big fan of the showing lifestyle
Interesting reading about Heimo and his journey in Alaska. Kind of envious he found such a great life. A big fan of the showing lifestyle.
I enjoy reading about people living in Alaska and this is ...
I find this to be an insightful character portrayal of a person who has chosen to do things in a very different manner from most of humanity. The book explores Heimo's history and motivations while providing an interesting counterpoint of the author's experiences. I enjoy reading about people living in Alaska and this is one of the best books I have read.
This guy rocks
Can’t gwt much more macho than self sufficient mountain trapper , unless you’re a firefighter who jumps out of airplanes because airplanes have snacks and movies
tough guy
You think you have it tough making your way to work, or cutting your grass. Live in this guy's shoes for 30 yrs, and you will find that man has no boundaries on what it takes to survive, with some knowledge of the outdoors. For the very few of you that thinks this Alaskan lives a cruel, barbaric way of life... stay on your couch and continue buying your burgers and fish in the plastic wrapped styrofoam packages that magically appear on the supermarket shelf. Don't think about that nice leather purse, or the leather seats in you BMW. You don't have a clue about country life. God forbid the electricity goes out for a few months for you. Just keep humming that old country song... "Country folk will survive".
Awesome Book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. After watching all the Last Alaskans, it answered some questions that I had. It flowed real well even though it jumped around a bit. For anyone who enjoys the wilderness, this book should be a good read.
A great read
Starkly human account of the real life of a pioneer and his family. There are so many matter of fact details of day to day struggles in the Alaskan bush you almost forget the enormity of the undertaking as the family has obviously done. The beauty of the way they live underpins the optimism that permeates every account of their experiences in the refuge. A MUST READ.
Good book
I was very happy to come across this book about Heimo and his family, although it probably should have been written about 10-12 years later. The ending makes it seem as if Heimo and Edna had decided to give up on life in the Alaskan wilderness, they're still there living off the land and living the kind of life that most of us can only dream about.
Incredible Story and incredible Subjects....
I was sad the story ended. I wanted more. But that is real life and so is this book. Real life. Deep Life. Way more than you expect in authenticity and history. Well written and worth every minute of my time.
Could t out it down
This is a great read! I loved this book and couldn’t put it down. Especially if your a fan of the show and wondered about some other details about Heimo and Edna’s life. Such an amazing couple!
James Campbell writes with a great flow and style
James Campbell writes with a great flow and style.Great, easy read of Heimo and Edna in the Brookes Range. Wonderful story, and one of the best books I've ever read.
Great read!
Gives chronology of the Korth family's life in remote AWR and describing the highs and lows. Would love to read a second book!
Welcome To The World Of 40 Below
What would you do if it were 40 below and your snowmobile conked out 15 miles from your cabin? After reading this book you will understand that the answer is simple. You'd die. End of story. This is the tale of a real world tough guy who at a young age gave himself over to the pursuit of wilderness survival and is about the only one left out there with survival skills of this level. The author is no wimp either, spending considerable time with Mr. Korth plus doing mega-research on the history of the Alaskan wilderness, which he weaves into the story in an informing, non-boring way. When I read Into The Wild I somehow thought that the fellow that died just had a few unlucky breaks-like the river rising which trapped him out in that old bus. Wrong. That guy never stood a chance from day one, and this book shows you why. Like a lot of guys I have always had two fantasies - living in the backwoods of Alaska or living on a remote tropical island. I heartily thank the author for paring my fantasy list down to one - the island.
Heimo is THE MAN!
been watching him on TV and see that he was not always the wise and patient man when he was young. Loved the book.
Heimo, write book 2!
Loved this book! Heimo and Edna live the life so many of us would love! Hearing about their lives and experiences is priceless. It would be so great to be able to read a continuation of their story. My family has watched The Last Alaskans (and still hoping for a new season) and finding Heimo's book was awesome! This was an enjoyable read!
Must read
A must read fir anyone interested in learning about life in the bush of Alaska. A strong family for sure. Very enjoyable story
Awesome book!
Love the book And the series! Because we’ve been watching the series, when we (my spouse and I) read this book and they quoted Heimo or Edna, we could actually Hear their voices in our heads! (😂 ...in a good way!)
Great book- I highly recommend you read it.
I very much enjoyed this book. The story is very well written. Every day I was on an adventure with the characters.
Good Book
After watching the series, The Last Alaskans, I wasn't expecting to find much new information in this book, but I was wrong. It was a very enjoyable read about a life style very few of us know about.
Absolutely Fantastic Read
This book kept my attention throughout. Only boring parts were about all the laws and politics, but those parts were minimal. It is amazing how this ordinary man went into the wilderness and lead an extraordinary life. His family life is extremely interesting in it's dynamics. I have a lot of respect for Edna and Heimo. You guys rock!
Heimo
Hubby mentioned months ago he would like to read this, so I got it for him for Christmas. A nice surprise and now he knows I listen. He obviously hasn't read it yet, but he is looking forward to doing so.
Incredible Story
Amazing story! I enjoyed reading this to my husband on our last road trip. Loved getting to know Heimo and Edna through reading their story.
Heimo and his family will live with me for a long time
I go through bouts of reading books written by or about people who live relatively seclusive lives in beautiful wilderness areas. I wasn't expecting anything special with Campbell's book, but I got sucked in and didn't want it to end. I feel oddly attached to the Korth family, yet I can't imagine surviving even a month of their living circumstances. Gritty, fantastical, and emotionally raw mixed with the challenges and politics we face in protecting our last great wilderness and last great subsistence lifestyle.
Love this book and the man who inspired it.
Awesome book about living in the wilderness and about this wonderful man and his family.
Calming & Eye Opening
Heimo is an enigma; a man who loathes conservationists but perfectly embodies the definition. This first-person narration by Campbell is factual, kind, and from an outsider-turned-insider-but-yet-not-totally perspective. This book inspires me to go visit these incredible lands before they disappear. Well done, thank you.
Book
Found the book very good reading and an excellent back story to Heimo and Edna on the Last Alaskans.
Great read!
Bought one copy and husband and I are reading it. Wish we had two. We really enjoy the program and hope they never stop making the shows! Husband finished the book. I don't want to finish as he tells me the end was sad...
Interesting but not really an adventure book IMO
Based on recommendations, I was hoping and expecting an adventure book. While this book does have some adventures in it, it seems to concentrate on describing how and why people take to living in extreme remoteness. One would think that living over 100 miles from the nearest person would be one huge adventure. But we read here that survival is usually just plain hard, routine work. I enjoyed the book fairly well, but more from the aspect of understanding why someone would do it. Not enough adventure for me.
Alaskan life
An amazing read. I didn't know Americans still lived as the Korth's. It was heartbreaking and beautiful. They have lead an historic American life.
Heimo Korth is the last Alaskan
Great book. Heimo really is one of the last Alaskans. His love of his family and the Alaskan bush is evident.
It’s a very informative book.
I loved the whole story about the way Heimo and his family showed so much adventure and love for their way of life. Even though it is hard work and rough they never give up.
Five Stars
Love this book. Fast shipping reasonable price. Thank you.
Not a bad tome about a Wisconsin kid who catches the bug ...
Not a bad tome about a Wisconsin kid who catches the bug to live in the Far North. It held my attention pretty much the whole way.
Awesome read
Heimo is our hero. Amazing guy. Start this book, you can't put it down.
Beat book ever! !!!!
This is one of the most important books that I have ever read. The most thrilling true books ever. The writer is very truthful about everything including how everything is going including how to kill and finish the animals to take back to the cabin to eat. Heimo knorth is one of my heroes now. So is his wife Edna. Talk about woman's lib she is at the top of my list.
Interesting read. Wonders off topic a lot
Fills in a lot of Information about the Korths. Brings out their deep love for the lifestyle in alaska, and explains heir daily lives.
The great example of a Man and his family in the wilderness.
This is a follow up to the story on the National Geographic Channel. Would not miss an episode.
The cover is different
Wish it had the same cover as pictured...kind of disappointing.
Excellent book! I couldn't put the book down
Excellent book! I couldn't put the book down! I felt like I was living in Alaska right there with them. Very exciting, I even cried in part of the book.
Great read
great story, some tears were shed, but a great history of this frontier lifestyle.
Great read!
After reading several other books on Alaskan life this held my interest better than most There was just enough background on governmental dealing to have a good empathy for the characters.
Gripping
This book grabbed me and held me captive for two days. I had to finish it, no choice. Like every great read I was sad when it ended. I felt like I had spent a few weeks with the Korth family and got to know and care about them. I want to know what happens next. I feel like I now understand the recent history of Alaska in an almost personal way. I have spent the last 25 years in the Canadian North so I have some feeling for the material. This book feels authentic, the writer has a good ear, intuition and work ethic. I am going to buy his next book and see if this was just a happy accident. Well worthwhile!
Extreme Camping
For those of you who enjoy the outdoors, this is a well-written story about what may be the last pure subsistence family in North America. Ten thousand years ago we were all this way; now we are down to one man, his wife, and two daughters living in the remote bush of Alaska, eating mostly meat and surviving in a shack too small for most lawn tractors in the lower 48. While this may sound grim, it is usually not. It isn't paranoia but rather a pioneering spirit and awe for the natural world that compels this lifestyle (if "lifestyle" doesn't overly trivialize three decades in the bush living mostly on wild game and facing environmental extremes usually associated with other planets). The author is a good writer, the subjects of the story remarkable and sympathetic, and the pace of the narrative usually brisk. Definitely worth reading.
alaskan
starts slow seems almost boring -then you start seeing broad picture /done well I enjoyed .
A great read!!
Best book of all time!!!! A true picture of living in the bush and a true picture of what has happened to Alaska.
A+. Lots of inspiration to finally buy that ticket ...
A+. Lots of inspiration to finally buy that ticket up there for next summer. Can't wait. It's going to be an experience of a lifetime.
Love this Book!
This was a great book. Most entertaining book about family life surviving in Alaska. I used to fly there in the 70's while in the military. We recently vacationed there and now I enjoy reading about people who have made Alaska what it is today. We feel like we know the Korth family from watching them on the Discovery Channel.
Excellent
It is a very interest book. I liked it even better than Braving It!
Couldn't put it down!
As a fan of The Last Alaskans series, I wanted to know more about Heimo Korth, the motivation for his unusual choice to live as he does as well as the joys and struggles living off the land in the Artic reserve. This book covered it all and covered it well. I highly recommend it!
great read
I watch The Last Alaskans and enjoy the show. This book gave a lot of details on the Korth family. Great book
The last Alaskan
This is a great book for people that like something different, the rest of the story about Heimo and his family.
Excellent
I'm a huge fan of The Last Alaskan, so had to read this and it's an I can't put it down kind of book.
Good Read
Great insight into life in the wilderness.
Good Read
The book is just like the video. The man is a good writer.
I have seen Heimo on The Last Alaskans on tv ...
I have seen Heimo on The Last Alaskans on tv, but this book gives his presentation context. Well written.
Hardship and Sacrifice
This was an incredible book about Heimo Korth and his family and the hardships and sacrifices that they endured, yet it was about all the beauty that surrounded them. Sad that he is among the last to live this kind of life.
The story behind the last frontier
I loved following the life of Heimo and Edna and their family. I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to read this book. It gives a back story to the show. Thank you for sharing your life with me!
The book is too short!
One of the best books I have read, I hated to finish it. Hopefully there will be second book.
Can't put it Down
From the moment I opened this book, i was rivoted in place. Having watched the TV series before I found the book provided a ton more insight and the entire story is just fascinating.
Amazingly!
If you enjoy shows about Alaska as I do, you will appreciate this book. I dream of the life that Hiemo and Edna were so fortunate to live and still live. A way of life that is sadly vanishing. Our ancestral life is no more. A life that was hard but appreciated.
Heimo Korth
I loved this book. I watch The Last Alaskans on television. This was an in depth view of their life in the bush and in the outside world.
If you enjoy the show The Last Alaskans
If you enjoy the show The Last Alaskans, I think you will really enjoy reading this book. Heimo and Edna Korth are my favorite people on the show, this book will let you in to his early life and how he ended up in Alaska. On the show, they are so honest about their life, and the book is no different.
It's Real Alaskan Life
We have traveled 4 times to Alaska with more to come. This book gives insight to the real Alaska and just how hard it is to "live off the grid." If you travel to Alaska, it is great to read accurate books about where you are going and the history behind the land. This is a great one to start with. Also "Two in the Far North" is a good book.
Great!
Wonderful book!!
Great Book
Very good read! Im bummed they canceled TV show I guess we can’t have shows if they do not have negative people acting like drama queens.
Nicely written
Nicely written.
Hello and Edns
I enjoyed this book very much. After a few chapters, I realized it was not so much a biography of the subjects, but if the coming of age of Alaska. Kudos to James Campbell for a great story!
Good Book
Very Interesting
Loved this book
Interesting read
Great true story.
I enjoyed the easy reading of a real life adventure of a man and wife living way off the grid.

Book in undamaged box, but book destroyed!
Bought for a Christmas gift to my son-in-law. He loves this show and requested it for Christmas. Packed in an undamaged box, but in this condition!
Fascinating
If you are already familiar with Heimo Korth, you will love this in-depth visit into his family's existence in the middle of ANWR. If you are NOT familiar with them now, you will be a fan when you read his book.
Inspirational
A thing that few will ever be able to experience. They always did what was best for their family. Simply inspirational regardless where you live.
Motivational Story
If you love Heimo in his TV series... you'll love reading about the real Heimo!!
Great book
Great read. I highly recommend it.
Loved It
I absolutely loved this book! If you're a fan of the show The Last Alaskans you will love this book!
Great read
We have been fans of the series "The Last Alaskans" for the past few years. It was nice to read some of the background behind the show. Having lived in Alaska, I know some of what they are confronted with on a daily basis.
A great book about living off the land in Alaska
I found this book fascinating. The book examines in detail the incredibly tough life of Alaskan homesteaders and also tries to sort out why they chose such an arduous existence. Campbell not only focuses on Heimo Korth and his family but also uses other sources to flesh out the book. It is clear that the author was taken by Heimo and Alaska. Anyone who is an Alaskan lover will enjoy this great book.
Great read
This book is a great read and insight into one man's struggles to make it in Alaska. It shows the determination of him and the struggles he went though. It also highlights the conservationist in a man of the land. Heimo understand he cannot trap, catch or kill every animal in his little slice of heaven. He has to understand more then some scientist who only comes to woods to count something and than leaves for a warm bed and hot shower. If you like the idea of self sufficient folks who are willing to take risks and not have every new piece of technology the day it comes out you will enjoy this book.
Great book
Great book
Couldnt put it down!
Couldnt put it down. I laughed, cried and loved every second.
since I watch the series on Discovery channel the book ...
since I watch the series on Discovery channel the book was more interesting. To me there was a lot of history not including Heimo Korth. All in all the book was most enjoyable

One of the most moving true stories Ive ever read.
I loved this book because it made me feel like I was right there with them. It made me understand more how they live. They've always been my favorite on the show, but this book made me feel an even higher respect for them and their way of life.
Loved
As a huge fan of The Last Alaskans, I really loved this book and learning more of the back story of Heimo and Edna. Learning about their daughters, where he came from.....how he ended up in Alaska. Truly a very interesting story.

Love this book. well written and it shows the hardship and the loving of living in Alaska on the Collen River.
Good book.
We watch this show on TV. I got this book for my husband. He is loving it! I can’t wait to read it myself.
Alaska wild, could you do it? Heimo has!!
This is a really good story of adapting to the wild and living off the land. It is fine read and inspiring, despite Heimo’s trials and tribulations of settling into the lifestyle.
Last Alaskan couple
Last Alaskans Heimo and Edna share their stories. The book also features history and cultural information on Native Alaskans and the ANWR area.
Great read.
Very enjoyable book about the life of this man. I recommend it highly.

Wonderful story
Well written, easy read. I watch the TV show each week and now have a better idea of how his adventure started, and the history behind his life with Edna. Truly amazing people, their strength and independence and love for the land is amazing.
Excellent book. Love reading and watching Heimo.
Excellent book. You should read it and also watch the last Alaskan movie.

Heimo Korth
Fun reading. Anyone interested in subsidence living this is a must.
bookwas in excellent condition
I enjoyed the book very much...….makes me like the Korth Family even more...……..
Survival is a very day occurrence.
Liked it all.
Read this is you like the woods and the wilderness.
A well written book about a fascinating man and his family. I also watched several documentaries and reality shows about the ANWR the people still spending a considerable amount of their life there. A modern adventure story, and a love story as well.
Think you have it rough? Read this and you ...
Think you have it rough? Read this and you will rethink a lot of preconceptions of how hard modern life is. Heimo's ability to thrive in a environment that would flat out kill 99% of us in a couple of days, let alone years is a real inspiration. This is coming from a life long northern Minnesota resident who HATES winter - but the story is really compelling and well written, I'll still not look forward to the cold, but it is hard not to admire the man who sought it out.
Fabulous book
I got interested in the TV series but the book explores Heimo in more detailed and I could not put the book down. Just wow!
Five Stars
Great story, easy read
Great book for those who enjoy the outdoors
For those who enjoy the show "The Last Alaskans" this was a very interesting read. Heimo is one amazing individual. For those who don't watch the show, this book will open your eyes as to the hardships of being a frontiersman in Alaska.
I highly recommend it to anybody who has ever fantasized about running ...
I was riveted by Heimo's story. I really admire his persistence to live in the wilds of Alaska. The story perfectly captured the near death situations, the hard work and physical and mental grit required to exist in an unforgiving environment. I highly recommend it to anybody who has ever fantasized about running away to live in Alaska's secluded interior- you will receive all the thrills with none of the pain.
Learned a lot about their lives
Very good
1st Edition?
I think I got the 1st edition. Says copyrighted in 2004. Lucky!
