The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions is a beloved queer utopian text written by Larry Mitchell with lush illustrations by Ned Asta, published by Calamus Press in 1977. Part-fable, part-manifesto, the book takes place in Ramrod, an empire in decline, and introduces us to the communities of the faggots, the women, the queens, the queer men, and the women who love women who are surviving the ways and world of men. Cherished by many over the four decades since its publication, The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions offers a trenchant critique of capitalism, assimilation, and patriarchy that is deeply relevant today. This new edition will feature essays from performance artist Morgan Bassichis, who adapted the book to music with TM Davy in 2017 for a performance at the New Museum, and activist filmmaker Tourmaline.

Queer culture 101. Read it. Thank an elder.

A remarkable document from a different age. Equal parts manifesto, creation myth, how-to memoir, and mirror. You, Little Brother and Sister, read this to learn your history.

queer lit must-read

The sense of queer belonging and community I felt while reading this felt like a much-needed hug. The art is beautiful and unique, the story is rooted in our real experiences. Felt a lot like healing.

Meh

I think the information is outdated and flawed. I’m a monogamous gay male and I don’t typically view cock as a lifeline, nor do I really respect guys who do. Don’t read this book if you are looking for Self respect. That said, I do think it’s an interesting examination of gay male and somewhat lgbtq history. It’s was ok.

Seasame St meets Castro St.

So glad this is back in print. A gem from a different time that still resonates with certain faire king's.

Required Reading

A joyful look at queer life in a different time. Huge wisdom!

Absoultely a Queer Lit Mist-Read

I adored this book. I took so many pictures of pages and paragraphs to send to other people. It's amazing and wonderful and bittersweet and strengthening to see how many goals have remained the same when it comes to dismantling the harmful systems that surround us. The way it made me feel so connected to the previous generation was sublime.

Sowing the Seeds of Queer Liberation 1 Generation at a Time

I found this book in my mentor's apt. when I was 19. He thought it was crap, sneered and said as much (in high flutin' language, too, since he was a professor in English), but in my reading of it, I found liberation. It is a book based on some thoughts rendered/filtered through Radical Faerie consciousness. It instructs the readers how how to be a more human, more whole person -- regardless of how patriarchy and other oppressive forces, even internalized ones... how to combat them and not allow the poisonous hetero-normative social conditioning make us the monsters it makes, well, of heterosexuals. A must for anyone seeking a third path... and if it speaks to you, find Radical Faeries in your neck of the woods.

a book I will give and give and give to everyone I care about

ever read a book that fills you to the brim and feels like family and sees you the way you want to be seen, that's revolutionary and life changing and a salve to the pain of existence, shines light on the beauty of existence -- a book that makes you want to scream about it from rooftops and make sure everyone knows about it and buy 1,000 copies, 10,000 copies, so that everyone you love and care about, everyone struggling like you, everyone filled with despair and pain can read it too, but -- a book so personal that it must be shared hand-in-hand, a gripped and hugged and tear-stained copy handed down, gifted and given and shared privately, intimately, meaningfully, wreathed and garlanded in personal words and whispered hopes and dreams and salvations -- do you know that book? this is that book.

A window onto the past

A useful look at part of America in the 1970s but no longer relevant to Britain of today. I am pleased that the word has been reclaimed. This book is a tribute to that word and lifestyle.
