An important document that we should understand

The Emancipation Proclamation, given to readers free by Amazon, is worth reading to understand an important event during the Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln felt during the war that he could not free the slaves in the northern states, but only free those in the rebellious south (over which he had no control during the war). The proclamation was issued on September 22, 1862 and would become effective against states and parts of states still in rebellion on January 1, 1863. The president wrote that the proclamation was a “necessary war measure for suppressing said rebellion.” He, in essence gave the states and parts of states who were in rebellion three months, 100 days, to end the rebellion, otherwise they would lose their slaves.

A Important Historic Document

On September 22, 1862, President Lincoln issued the preliminary version of The Emancipation Proclamation. I urge all Americans to read this document and understand its importance in American history. Many believe this document was an action to end slavery and grant black Americans the same freedom and rights enjoyed by white Americans. Nothing is further from the truth. Lincoln was first and formost driven to perserve the Union by putting down the rebellion that threatened the United States. By issuing such a document,, he knew that he had struck a blow against the South’s strength by providing an incentive for slaves to escape creating a distraction and weakening the economic stability of the Confederacy. Without slaves for labor and with its men fighting, the Southern economy would be weakened. Further, this action united the Republican Party to push for the complete abolishment of slavery and to stave off any military interference on the part of England or France. Lincoln believed that by issueing the Emancipation Proclamation, the will of the people of the Union and the Constitution was thrust upon the Confederates. There is little doubt that Lincoln hated slavery and desired abolition but, in 1862-1863 few white Americans would have even entertained the notion of equal rights under the law for black Americans. They would wait more than 100 years to attain the basic rights granted by the US Constiitution.

Amazing Proclamation!!!

Of course, this Emancipation Proclamation is awesome and deserves a five-Star rating. At the senior age of 69 years, I wish I had read this years ago. I read Uncle Tom's Cabin years ago and could not believe the harsh realities of slavery that unfolded and were revealed. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote from the heart and I wept. Today we are facing another slavery with sex trafficking and it is affecting every race. May God help us see it stamped out before long as well. My family has been targeted as well as so many others.

Great Gift for Any American or Would-Be American VI

Freedom From Slavery

"The Emancipation Proclamation" (Sept 22. 1862) by President Abraham Lincoln concerning any person held in slavery in the United States and its' Territories were forever free. They were at this time free to work for wages, and any state holding persons as slaves were in rebellion against the United States of America. The Army and Navy were charged to support this proclamation. The war was started to bring the rebelling states back into the Union, but in the end the slaves were set free and able to remain in the United States. It was suggested that the slaves should return to Africa, and some slaves returned to Africa. However, slaves were born in the United States and were granted the right to stay in the United States as citizens. SPR

Abraham Lincoln was THE Greatest President to ever live

Abraham Lincoln was THE Greatest President to ever live. For those re-learning Washington's Bio these days who disagree or who want to point out Reagan freed MILLIONS from Soviet Hegemony I must needs ask "Without his courage to free the Slaves, if their Freedom was obtained years or decades or even a Generation later at even more suffering to our National Soul what kind of Nation would we be now?" He Freed the Slaves He embraced the Confederates & welcomed them back as Brothers "with Malice Toward None!" His Legacy is the American Spirit, sometimes battered, never broken, always Faithful to pursue the Truth.

This is a must -

We've all heard about it, were told what it did and most never read it! Take a few moments and see this for yourself. POST REVIEW, I've read several of the reviews and it appears obvious that many of us are moving with eyes closed. Lincoln didn't free anyone that he had control over and the states and locations that had slaves and were not in revolt against the federal government were unaffected and remained slaves. Who are we kidding, this was nothing more than a war strategy. Lincoln's only concern was to hold the union and nothing more. If you look at the facts, slavery would have died on its own regardless of war or not.

Important Document...

Purchased this along with our other founding documents so our grandson Know what our Republic is founded on. God forbid we teach this in our BROKEN SCHOOL SYSTEMS... God Bless Our Republic....

Emancipation Prcolamation

Short and to the point on the subject on freeing the slaves as a military necessities. That and now and forever since that day President Lincoln signed into law that added to the 13 amendment for the rights of slaves to be free.

Abe was a very shrewd tactision.

A careful reading of this document allows the reader to reach an undeniable truth. Abe Lincoln only freed the slaves in confederate held lands, doing nothing to upset slave owners in Union held territory. The real purpose in this proclamation was hopefully to generate animosity of the slaves in confederate lands so as to cause them to rise up, thereby creating a new enemy from within.

The Emancipation Proclamation

Well, now I can say I've actually read the entire proclamation by Abraham Lincoln. I recommend reading this. Quick easy read.

A Most Important Read for Young Learners

A great option or gift however it is very small and the print is as well . The book is very thin also.

a great experience

I was excited when I got this. Not only to be able to read it myself but to share it with my grandchildren and let them see in print what they are only told about in school. It was a great experience for myself and a wonderful bonding moment with a future generation

Seems to be accurate. It's nice to be able to read history.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS IN AMERICAN HISTORY

Issuing this proclamation helped bring the Civil War to a satisfactory conclusion. Slaves freed by the proclamation left the South and working cotton fields and many joined the Union army. The South's economy suffered and the Union troops were made stronger by the slaves who defected. Also, the Union gained a second cause for fighting the war -- not only to preserve the Union but to free those in bondage and provide them with economic opportunity.

Reading is fundamental

Very interesting alot to know and to learn....

Not what it has been cracked up to be.

The Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Lincoln has been seen as an act of liberating the slaves from bondage. It was in fact just a strategy for undermining the southern war effort. It didn't free one slave the north had the power to do at the time it went into effect.

Excellent

Brief, articulate and to the point. A masterpiece of American history and justice. Sadly, in the mind of some, the Civil War is still going on, which is not to say that we should cease the pursuit of equality.

What I expected and of good quality.

Good student resource.

HISTORIC

Lincoln at his best!

It is easy to store and sturdy

It is just what I wanted: a hardback, glove compartment size book of one of the most important documents in United States history. It is easy to store and sturdy.

Very interesting!

Nice to re-read this document and see that the slaves in over half of Louisiana were KEPT in slavery. This is because Lincoln said "If I could save the Union without letting ONE slave go free, I would!" He didn't want to upset his political donators in New Orleans, so..."Ya'll go ahead and keep 'em!"

Loved this "little" book on the Emancipation Proclamation. A quick read, would recommend it for short reading.

Kindle

Great

Must read, it ain't what most of us think

For some reason, I have always believed that the Emancipation Proclamation was what freed the slaves, thereby ending slavery in America. But in actuality, it only freed slaves in the places that were at war with the government of the United States.

Four minutes to read, a lifetime to understand its implications.

Essential for any student of American history. The proclaimation shifted the war from a conflict about secession and states rights to a moral conflict about hu an rights.

Piece of history!!

Everyone needs to take the time to actually read history in the words of the time period to truly understand the importance of what was happening.

An Historic Document all should have

Freedom of Slaves

Great tool for learning slave history. Reading about slaves is informative, but seeing and having the document declaring freedom for slaves is powerful. It is also a reminder that people of color had to fight for a God given right.

Knowledge

Knowledge about our country is always great and helpful thanks so much for this book. Pray for us as a people to understand the concept of knowledge. Thanks.

History

I do not feel many people know what the extent or real purpose was of the "Proclamation" It needs to be read by those that speak of it!

Bought for a College course.

The incredible document.

Written during that important crossroads of American history, the Civil War, President Lincoln's proclamation to free the Slaves shows the intellect and the forcefulness of this lawyers fine brain.

AMERICAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

The Emancipation Proclamation

This document is the actual wording used by President Abraham Lincoln. I found it to be very useful and accurate.

A very important Speech in American History by A Great American Patriot

Should be a required reading for all Americans and is well deserving of a 5 Star rating This was a very important writing in the execution of Freedom. A Freedom that was fought for and cost many lives.

a piece on which to reflect

The context makes sense even today. I reflect on these words and appreciate, more now than ever, our struggle for equality and prosperity. #namaste

The Emancipation Proclamation

This should be required reading. Like it or not it is a valuable piece of our history and helped shape the great nation we are today.

Amazing

I hope you read this it is very wonderful to me in many ways an I hope you read it to

Freedom for Whom?

[...] The Emancipation Proclamation does not, as is usually believed, put an end to slavery in the United States. It ends slavery (technically but not really until the war ends) only in those states and portions of states which are at the time of signing (January 1 1862) in open rebellion against the United States of America. It orders military units moving into those areas to procure real freedom for those who are technically freed by the proclamation. It also orders that men who are eligible to be soldiers be accepted into the Union army. In real fact, very few white men would fight alongside black men, and "black regiments" with white officers were created as time went by. This should be read by all students of American history as an example of a document which does NOT do what most people think it does.

The Emancipation Proclamation

It's history. What can you say? You can't review history as it happened. You can only know that it did. It's what people write and say about it than can be reviewed. Reviewing it as a speech and later published document, one has to admit he was a great speech writer in his time. He was careful about his words and since he didn't make mistakes in his writing, he had them well thought out before he set them to paper.

One Star

Great piece of history.

Emancipation Proclamation

This was pretty boring. However, it is an important document. If you're a senator or something, get it. If you aren't you can, or you can't. The good thing is it's free.

The emancipation free

Bad it does not let me read it Never get it will take you in to madnes i hate it

A Farce

The so-called "Emancipation Proclamation" was a farce. Lincoln freed the slaves over which he had no authority, and kept the slaves bound in states and areas where he had the authority to set them free. Don't believe me? Read it for yourself.

One of the misunderstood documents of all time. Lincoln ...

One of the misunderstood documents of all time. Lincoln did this for tactical purposes. Johnson was president when the slaves were freed.

First Steps, but enough

This certainly was a bold move for his day, I'm not sure how anyone could deny it. We live in a culture that certainly likes to second guess motivations. I suspect that President Lincoln's motivations were multifaceted. He was not only trying to stop slavery but end a war, both were good ideals.

Important to read

So many people claim certain things are in this proclamation which are not there. Read the source before you state what it actually says. Good advice to practice
