The Dog Encyclopedia: The Definitive Visual Guide

This book provides clear photos and basic information on a few hundred breeds of dogs. I was worried that it would not represent enough of the breeds, perhaps only featuring one or another of the kennel clubs, but I'm glad to say that it is more than sufficient. Owners looking for a new dog may find the volume lacking in information on breed traits, but I really don't think that it's realistic to get all of that from an encyclopedia. Rather, this book excels at helping someone identify breeds, explore relationships among breeds, and such of that. There is an introduction with some neat information on dogs (their evolutionary journey, anatomy, etc.) and a concluding section on dog care (which I admittedly found unneccesary in an encyclopedia, but I won't take off for the filler pages). Also, very importantly, the index in the back is organized very well; looking up a dog breed there will find every reference to the breed listed in normal font, and the breed's main page listed in bold. This means that it is easy to find a breed by name, and also easy to find where that breed may be discussed in comparison to other breeds. Final note, this book is much larger than I thought it would be.

Beautiful book, especially because of the photos. It is lacking a bit in the info department, but you don't buy a photo book primarily for the info. We were a bit disappointed not to see much about the different "pit" breeds considering they are one of the most common in the US at pounds/rescues. (Not to mention a personal stake, because we have two of our own.) All in all this was purchased for my 14 year old dog lover daughter and she's plenty pleased with it.

I like to know from where breeds originated and why a particular breed was developed - hunt small game, strictly companion, etc. this book provides a quick summary plus beautiful pics. I plan to get another as a gift for a relative.

Great book if you are trying to learn about land seals. Not as nice as actual seals but a comparable alternative if you don’t have access to a lot of water.

I appreciate the photos and descriptions of the dogs. They also included more modern breeds that have since been recognized by American Kennel Club like the Labridinger/Springador. Overall the book is helpful, good pictures and easy to read.

I bought this book for my 7 year old daughter for Christmas. She is obsessed with dogs, and always wants to learn more about them. This book turns out to be perfect for her! She has read this cover to cover a bunch of times, and refers to it often when she has a question or wants to learn about a particular dog breed. There are lots of great pictures, and the explanations are easy for her to understand. Many breeds are covered, as well as dog-related issues.

We have a black lab, but my five kids all love dogs. It is great fun to keep this on the coffee table and look through it when someone mentions a breed they have or you see a dog walking down the street and want to identify it. The photos are great. The layout is great. If you are looking for a big coffee table book with nice photos and good information about dogs i highly recommend this one.

THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE TOO UNIFORM; MOST DOGS ARE SHOWN IN SIMILAR POSITIONS -- BOOORING! ...the dogs, that is. :-) This is a great book and provides a lot of information about the many breeds, and cross-breeds, of dog. Labradinger? This is such an animal. The book also includes sections on both preparing to bring your new pet home, as well as first aid and emergency procedures for dog. I really enjoyed reading about the different breeds, which will be helpful when I am able to take steps toward getting my next best friend. If you are a dog lover, I highly recommend this book.

My Great-granddaughter was thrilled to get this for her 10th birthday. Here favorite things in the world are DOGS!!! The book itself was beautiful, the pictures amazing! It will be something she will be proud of and learn from for many years! So happy to have found such a great book especially for her!

My daughter has really gotten into dogs especially since she got a new puppy a few months ago. She was checking out book after book from the library about dogs. I decided to get her a nice comprehensive dog book for Christmas. I looked to Amazon and their selection and choose The Dog Encyclopedia. She has loved this book so much, she constantly tells me what she's learned. She hasn't asked to get another book from the library since she received this great book.

some people love home design, others... the dogs that will live in them. This is a book that you'll find yourself mulling over and everytime you close the book, you'll find your heart happier than when you opened it. The earlier version of this book helped my partner and I to choose our last dog and it was a perfect match thanks to the "low energy, small apartment, high humor" department. Yes, an English Bulldog.

I bought this book for my 6-year-old niece for her birthday. She LOVES the book. Of course there is a lot of dog physiology, breeding, etc. that is not of interest to a child, but the book is very comprehensive and the photos are great.

Beautiful book with nice photos and descriptions. Thought this would be a good reference book for our local shelter. But there are too many breeds that aren't popular here. For example, in the scent hounds, there are 51 varieties that are found in other parts of the world and not common in the states. Hope I can find a more relevant book for the shelter.

This is a wonderful book on a very good listing of dog breeds, including many that are newly recognized. I very much like the way the breeds were categorized, starting with wild breeds. I learned a great deal. The pictures are beautiful, and it is an excellently bound and quality book. I loved it so much I bought a copy for a friend, the owner of an Akita, who was very pleased.

This is not an exhaustive guide to all dogs, but it is a very good reference.

My sister says it gives a lot of details she wants -- the history, facts about the dogs, etc. She tells me she gave it 4 stars because "nothing's perfect." I purchased the book for her for Christmas. She would definitely recommend this book to others.

We got this for our 11 y.o. son, who wanted to educate himself on breeds and possibly choose one for himself. This book is very educational and has as much information as it could for all the breeds it represents. Pictures are great too. Must have for anyone who loves dogs and want to educate himself/herself on breeds.

Beautiful pictures, but I found the information often spotty or just wrong. The editing and breed choices were also odd. A lot of time spent with rare and new breeds, while significantly less spent with AKC registered breeds and dogs that one is likely to encounter/purchase. Not really what I was hoping for.

The book came with the edges of the cover slightly bent, but that is very hard to avoid! But beautiful book and cheaper on Amazon!

This encyclopedia did not have the information I was hoping for on the breeds. I was very disappointed with this encyclopedia.

I purchased two books about dogs and decided to return this one. I am very disappointed that I was not refunded the FULL amount. Will think twice before ordering books again.

This book is very comprehensive and has many excellent photographs, but if you are looking for a book with several pages of information about each breed, then keep looking. Some of the breeds have more information about them than others; most have little more than a handful of lines about them. I am particularly disappointed with the fact that the book does not give much information about the unusual way in which the Saarloos Wolfdog was developed, as well as the fact that it does not include the Dingo (despite the fact that it includes the New Guinea Singing Dog; another kind of dog that cannot be kept as a pet). Put short, this is a good book for those who are interested in the diversity of dogs, but it is not for professionals.

Amazing ‘big’ book filled with great information and amazing pictures

This is the best book on dogs I have seen. There are so many breeds, there was even new-to-me breeds. Being a dog-person my whole life it was surprising how many dogs I hadn't heard of. This book is very informative too. It discusses each breed and breaks it down as to what the dog is really like and what that breed needs most. It is a great resource for people trying to discover what dog breed might be best for them, should they be considering getting a dog. Even though I have two dogs, this will be a great reference in the future if I wanted more. It also is a great conversation piece, so on the table top it will go. Dog lovers should have a copy. The illustrations alone are enough to keep you busy for some time. Browsing each page gives another full-color experience, it will keep you turning the page.

This is the big, beautifully illustrated coffee-table style book on dog breeds that I have been looking for for a long time. There are a lot out there but nothing that can rival the quality of pictures presented in this book. My only disappointment is that not more breeds were highlighted with their own brief "chapter", but that's not negative enough for me to dock any stars. There's even a section on mutts and hybrids (like labradoodles and puggles).

Great book/encyclopedia that does more than just list the different breeds of dogs (although it does an awesome job of that). Training, diet/health, history, etc. it's all in there.

This is a beautiful book and so well done. I love dogs and i love learning about them, this is a great book to have for any dog lover. Ive had a lot of other borrow it as well.

This encyclopedia has all the up to date breeds and a little common knowledge for each one. This is a good book if you want to learn the breeds.

I have another encyclopedia dog book and I thought it would be the same but I like my other one better as it tells more of each breed. This one doesn't. But this one has more breed in it but if there's no info it's kinda of annoying as you have to go too the internet and do some research on the breed while you could of gotten in the book that you payed for and expected to have that info right in the book. My other book has way more details and explains way more on how the dog is and things like that. Both this book and my older one have good things and bad, they would just need to be put together lol. But the only thing bad about my book that I can think of right now is that it doesn't have as much breed as this one but it's understandable as new breeds were developed along the way. If I knew how it looked before buying it maybe I would of looked for a better one.

This book has an enormous selection of breeds, which any dog lover will enjoy looking over. However, a lot of breeds have very short descriptions. You will find that the more 'well known' breeds (bulldogs, border collies, German shepherds, Labrador etc) will have a page, sometimes two dedicated to them. As someone who knows a fair bit about dog breeds, I was a bit annoyed because I wanted to learn about the less known dog breeds. Nonetheless, if you don't know much about breeds then it will be just fine! Also, what I love about this book is that it gives you an overview of the biology of the dog such as its bone structure, respiratory, coat types, senses and whatnot. At the back of the book it gives you a care guide with tips on how to look after your dog in all stages of its life and a few tips at training.

Bought as a Christmas present for my dog mad daughter. Very informative great pictures and facts.

Bought this to supplement our research for getting a dog - and also just to have around and look at dog pictures! Has great information and lots of photos (some of which are not 100% indicative of the current breed but good for the most part). It didn't really tell us too much more than we already could find on the internet but it does give you wealth of information on breed history and other breeds we hadn't even heard of (but you subsequently will love and then find you cant get hold of!).
