There are many books out there on herbalism . This one is another one and maybe like all the others yet with some differences . This one is great for the coffee table, it is big, hardcover and looks nice. Most books on herbology will give you a dictionary listing of the herbs and what they are good for. The second half of most books has the dictionary symptom of ailments and what herbs can be used to treat them. This book has more. The first part of the book talks about different philosophies around herbs. The author discusses Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, Greek medicine , European medicine going up until today. This tome will teach the student how to prepare teas, oil infusions and tinctures. There is a section on how to grow and harvest your herbs as well. When describing the herbs you get a full page based on that herb. There is a picture of the herb and all the parts that are used. There is also a subsection on the page dealing applications . The various ailment that plague us are listed in chart form. So you get the ailment, what herb you should use and how the herb should be prepared. It is easy to understand .

Although it is a nice book, if you had to pick between the two popular ones I'd go with the other one. The only real advantage of this one over the other is that there is a section listing general ailments and herbs to use to relieve them. That is what I intend to use mostly. This book took me two days to be done with. But it is kind of a 'pick it up and look it up' one. If you own herbal books and are knowlegeable I would not recommend this because you may not learn much. However the pictures are beautiful and it's pretty neat for a beginner. It covers most of the aspects of using herbs. And deceiving the popular ones. I would have loved to learn more about collecting growing drying and storing as well as expiration. I guess it's another book I'll find that in one day. Because I am talking about gaining that precious herb grandma knowledge I know it will not be all out there that easily available :)

Very informative book with a little bit of history on ancient Medicine from around the world. I love that it shows pictures of ingredients and illustrations of all usable parts of plants with descriptions on how to get the best use of them. It also gives suggestions on home remedies and how to make them yourself using different methods that accommodate your style and preference. Such as capsules, teas, essential oils, pomade and much much more.

This book was recommended to me by a coworker and I'm happy I was able to find it on Amazon. It's a large book with a lot of info. It's kind of like a text book with how much info is in it. It tells you not only about the herbs and what they do but also how to prepare them for each purpose. It's great!

Bought as a gift for my sister who is very into herbal healing. I purchased this book used in good condition and the book I received was in absolutely pristine condition. I was thrilled and so was my sister. As an aside (and this is hardly the seller's fault) for informational purposes: While the book is well written and beautifully illustrated, the first thing that my sister noticed was the conspicuous absence of turmeric from this book... so while it is fairly comprehensive, I wouldn't call it a "complete" guide to medicinal herbs.

I read the reviews before I ordered this book, I am not a pro as most buyers claim to be but I never did understand why anyone will complain about the history of herbalism as illustrated in this book by the wonderful writer, how else is any rookie on this subject going to know the history. I am an average person and by the way in the medical field who is not all that impressed by the modern synthetic medicine since if we take one drug to cure one illness, then we will develop 10 other illnesses because of the side effects of that one drug. I want to know the true history of herbs and their true uses and I am learning very fast that herbalism is nothing to sneeze at for all the wonderful ways I could use herbs for my family and friends health. You'll find more than 250 remedies for common ailments;and how to make a herbal first aid kit! This really is the bible of herbal medicine! I love how its laid out. Love that its in color so that you can see how the actual herbs are suppose to look. Cant wait to start growing and making my own herbal medicine. I bought this book used, but it came in excellent condition.

I love this book! I have 5 medicinal herb books which i refer to, and this one is amongst my favorites! The illustrations are the most beautiful I have seen, and i really like how the author provides images for the different forms the herb can be used, as well as directions on how to prepare it. I highly recommend this book!

I seem to collect herb books....and I find something to love about all of them. This one is no different. There is good information in a nutshell, which is exactly what I bought it for. I have other books I use if I want expanded info.

"The Complete Guide Medicinal Herbal By Penelope Ody - An A-Z of over 120 medicinal herbs for all Australians." *** This is my favourite beginner's book. Not because it is basic, as it is not but because of its easy page -per-herb layout. Although there is terminology that may yet be foreign to the beginner the wording used throughout this publication is easy to follow and very personable. Leading with an historic introduction Penelopy Ody gives the reader some background into the origins of herbal medicine. Each herb is discussed in terms of its historical background, parts used and applications. There are full-colour photographs to help the reader identify various parts of each plant. This book does not contain some of the herbs you might find in Mrs Grieve's A Modern Herbal but it is a more than adequate source of information particularly for the home user. Unlike some other herbals, Ms Ody includes small sections dedicated to the lesser known herbal lore of Ayurvedic Herbs out of India, Australian bush herbs, South American rainforest remedies and even some types of funghi . Approximately two thirds of the book is herb lore, the remaining third shows the reader what to do with this newly acquired knowledge. Using easy to follow photographs the author takes the reader from harvesting and drying to the techniques involved in making the various remedies. There are basic formulas which can be adapted to many recipes. Charmingly, although the quantities given are standardised, the measurements are provided in metric as well as kitchen utensil equivalent. For example, 62.5mls is given to equal 1 sherry glass whereas 150mls is the same as one tea cup. The section on home remedies goes into the nitty gritty of treating common ailments, suggesting combinations of herbs appropriate for each condition and cautioning the use of some herbs in certain situations. It is fabulous to see a herbal that addresses some issues unique to Australia, includes some of our native bush remedies, is written in non US English and most importantly it contains a comprehensive list of Australian and New Zealand address list of organisations and practitioners. Now the bad news, I have looked high and low to find copies of this book. There are some used copies available on Amazon but I can't find new ones. They may be out there, but even the publishers' website does not feature it in their search engine. Before you howl with disappointment though, there are other versions of the same book. I ended up buying the American version which is almost identical. I have noticed a few exclusions in the herb department, such as Khella and Galangal but then the use of Khella is restricted in Australia anyway. There are over 130 herbs in this version probably based on the use of Native American remedies in the US. Of course there are not the lists of Australian/NZ contacts that I mentioned.

I bought my first copy of this book several years ago and went to Amazon.com when I needed another one. By golly they didn't let me down, but then when have they ever? Never that's when. I needed it for a wedding gift. The bride was thrilled. She had looked at my copy several times and loved it, so I could think of no better gift for her, since she would be moving to the other side of the country. Every household should have a copy of this. It give simple, easy, possible remedies to try before you go looking for complicated drugs. At a time when more and more people are turning to "holistic medicine" this is a good place for the medically uneducated to start. Many friends have benefited from the wise lessons on its' pages. Try it, you'll love it.

Great book! I made a modified Comfrey oil using coconut oil instead of sunflower oil. It has completely replaced the Cortisone Cream used on my dad's poor arms... one application & the itching has completely stopped. My dog's hair has started growing back & all the dry itchy skin is supple & moist! I will be trying as many natural 'recipes' as needed for much better, natural health!

Love the alphabetized herb list. It's a little tricky because it's alphabetized by Latin name, but it's a good challenge and learning experience. Also, I have been studying Ayurveda for some time now, and found her explanations of it to be eye opening and very clear, and gained a lot from them. I thought the malady list in the back wasn't very comprehensive, but still a great resource.

This book is so informative! It got to me hella fast and I've been using it as an herbalist and it's quite informative! Must have for any herb lover! Can't wait for the new edition

This is an awesome book. I first borrowed it from the library and just knew I had to buy it. It's very helpful for knowing the information on Medicinal Herbal for my own home use. I'm so, so, so very glad I bought it.

I don't know much about herbs, so I can't say if any of this works, but it is a good gift, the images are very clear.

This is a very informative book and I highly recommend it. However a reprint in a smaller size format would be great. Aside from that, this book deserves to be in your book collection.

The herbal medicine book belongs in any ones library that cares about taking cane of ones self. The current medical community is concerned with keeping you coming back for mare not in healing you. Be responsible for your own life and take care of it. This will help.

I got this as a gift for a friend who will be starting classes to become a herbalist. She was in awe in the amount of detail the book provided and the color pictures that really helped her identify everything about the plants she will be working with.

Good book. List many common ailments and what herbs you need to take to soothe those ailments. Book also teaches you how to make your own, pills, creams, tinctures, extracts etc using herbs. Good descriptions and good colored pictures in this book. Alot of this herbal knowledge is getting lost. This is an old book but one of the best Ive seen for how to use herbs for healing.

OK I first looked at this book at the local library and even re-checked it out to study it more, I saw this on Amazon and said I better buy this one!! The book was in a lot better condition than I expected, it was sold as used and it looked like the must have just sat in on a shelf and forgot about it, that is their loss and my gain, this book will be well used when I am done with it.

After buying countless books, I'm so happy I came upon this one. This is the first book I've ever read that truely establishes real world use with me. The images are incredible! So extensive! I saw this in an associates collection and at a first glance HAD to have it. It is now one of my favorite books among 100's! Both beginner friendly and useful for experts. All the knowledge needed is practically in these pages, from which part to use, when to harvest, to methods of thecmedicinal substance production. Some of the plants are a bit exotic, but all in all a rewarding book to own and so useful.

this is a great herbal starter book for any herbalist. I got this to learn more about making my own teas. it is great for learning how to make tintures, creams, infusions. Also teaches you how to dry and store your herbs. The pictures are GREAT too. Not many herb books out there with pictures like these. Also lists some magical components which is nice.

Indispensable for the armchair herbalist I just bought my second copy of The Complete Medicinal Herbal (my first was lost) and am so happy to have it back again! Ms. Ody certainly knows her herb uses and she shares that knowledge in a straightforward, understandable manner. The images are plentiful and make plant identification easy. Luckily, while this book is currently out of print, it can often be found used, for an affordable price. Be you an armchair herbalist, a writer in need of common sense reference or just curious, this book is well worth the having.

Other than one error that was found I believe in another review. This book is very helpful for understanding basic herbalism and plant knowledge in general.

Take the time and click on the "Look inside this book" link. That is just a teaser of the true wonder of this book. The color pictures of not only the plant but the seeds and roots just make this an excellent guide to identify the herbs you a looking for. The listing as for the uses of each; washes, compress, pill, infusion and so on just keep adding to this books enjoyment. Its only down falls in my eyes are that she could have added a few more of the more common herbs and listed the various common names for each on the page with the pictures. But short of that, GET THIS BOOK!!!!! you won't be disappointed.

I was in the market place for a book that would tell me what herbs I should plant in my medicine garden I was planning. This book fit the bill! It is very detailed. It goes over the different herbs, how you can prepare them, what part of the herb you can use for different reasons. Also in the book of the book it has a break down of different aliments and what herbs you can use. It tells you what herbs to keep away from small children and pregnant women and what herbs not to mix together. i am glad that I purchased this book as I feel like I have a better knowledge of medicinal herbs and I am better prepared to plan my garden now.

This book not only shows the herbal remedies with directions on how to use them, it also has a part where it breaks down the body system you're trying to treat. LOVE IT!

The book has become hard to find but was worth the search as the information inside is timeless. My son is fascinated with it and the information on herbs and how to benefit from them so this is a gift for him for Christmas.

This is a reference book I constantly use. I grow my own herbs and share them with my neighbors. I use the various ways of storing the herbs depending on for what I use the herb.

Really liked gow they showed you differnt ways to use and apply in a medicinal way but they didn't give any recipes or dosage. Otherwise i thought it was very informative.

Wonderful herb book. It gives you a quick synopsis of most herbs.

Great book for referencing and getting started. Though if you really want to make remedies you have to cross reference what is in each plant so that you are not poisoning yourself or are actually doing some good. Also... just like anything it's not going to cure cancer or make you walk on water. It's more a of a reference for DIY home remedies, if you have a serious illness it's well advised to consult a doctor. The book is no substitute.

so far this is a VERY good book! i like how it starts off with history and then eases into the present! very good book!

I purchased this book for a friend who doesn't have a computer. I borrowed the book and thought it was a great resource. I know more then the average person about herbs but this book was very informative. I learned a lot from it. I just had to purchase a copy of my own for my personal library of herbal resources and uses.
