From the mid-19th century, many of the most celebrated moments and personalities in modern history—from Gettysburg to Hiroshima, and from Lincoln to Churchill—have been captured for posterity by the camera lens. Marina Amaral uses digital techniques, underpinned by painstaking research, to colorize 200 such images embracing an entire century of world history. The results are revelatory, transforming the monochrome of early photography into the vibrant hues of real life. Statesmen and soldiers, as well as the faces of hundreds of ordinary people, thus appear in dramatically vivid guise. The images are organized in 10 chronological chapters. Each image is accompanied by a 200-word caption by best-selling historian Dan Jones, telling the stories behind them. A fusion of amazing pictures and well-chosen words, The Colour of Time offers a unique—and often beautiful—perspective on the past.

A Beautiful New World History

This is a beautiful and fascinating book, published in the UK as “The Colour of Time” and in the U.S. as “The Color of Time” (October 2, 2018). The well-written and informative text is by Dan Jones, author of “The Plantagenets,” “The War of the Roses” and “The Templars.” Each decade is introduced by a single photograph, a “Zeitgeist” overview of the period, and a timeline that is loosely tied to the photographs that follow. The narrative explains each photograph and the historical context from which it is taken. The photographs drive the story, and in this sense the book reminds me of Neil MacGregor’s magnificent “A History of the World in 100 Objects.” Some of the photos are familiar and iconic (you’ve seen them in black and white), others a bit more obscure—all are beautifully rendered by Marina Amaral. I learned a great deal from this beautiful book and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I’ve also picked up two other news books featuring colorized photographs, “History as They Saw It”, by Wolfgang Wild and Jordan Lloyd, and “Retrographic” by Michael Carroll. Some of the photos are the same, and it will be interesting to see how different artists have interpreted how the colors should appear (there’s inevitably a bit or artistic license involved). On a related topic, be on the look out for Peter Jackson’s new documentary, “They Shall Not Grow Old,” in which he colorizes World War I footage, uses computer technology to smooth out the jerkiness of the old films, and adds sound and words (based on forensic lip reading of the old films) to create a documentary of WWI “as they saw it.”

Breathless history revealed

Totally in awe. The time and skill required to complete this book of history brought to life, is staggering. I've been anticipating the release for weeks now. Previews and discussions on Twitter. History with the veil of black and white lifted.

Absolutely gorgeous

An absolutely gorgeous book. Purchased as a gift, and it took my breath away when it arrived. Now everyone on my list is getting a copy for Christmas, including "my husband" (let's be honest it's for me). It's difficult to explain the emotional depth the color adds to these photos, but it's a masterpiece and I can't recommend this book more highly. Note - I actually prefer this UK cover to the American version, which is different and has a photo on it. To me, this catches the eye better.

Bringing history to life with color

Intriguing! Of course this isn’t a definitive history book, rather snapshots of what was happening in the world from 1850 to 1960. The very first pic is of JFK and Jackie O. Understated, real, concise...it’s almost like you have your own time machine. You realize history more in depth given the color enhanced photographs. This book in the very least is at least a great coffee table reader.

A fascinating look into history

This book really draws you in - the colorization is amazing and it really makes history come alive. I was a bit surprised at the size and format of the book....was expecting more of a "coffee-table" size and presentation. It's smaller and thicker than I expected. But it's amazing nonetheless.

An absolute must for lovers of history and photography alike

Absolutely gorgeous book! I've been following Marina Amaral's work for a long time now and had this book on preorder! After receiving it and reading through the first series of pages shows it's an absolutely stunning book. The beautiful full page photographs and the accompanying text that details the subject and the time they lived in really bring you back in time. There's nothing like it. You'll lose yourself in this book!

History anyone!

Excellent book, I purchased this as a present for my nephew for Christmas! The colors from black and white really made the book come to life! The author had a great idea to grab your attention and keep your interest! I highly recommend you purshase this for any one who loves history.

Don’t waste your money, it’s a scam.

The book came defective, pages are in the wrong order, there’s a loose segment of pages and there’s a big part that is missing.

Brings moments from history alive

Beautiful. That's the only word that comes to mind when I page through this. Seeing images from the 1860s in full, vibrant color is amazing. And the colorization is so well done that you'd think Ms. Amaral has a time machine. Highly, HIGHLY recommended.

A fantastic gift for anyone, young or old.

Fantastic book, for an history lover or lover of photography. The creativity of the coloring is truly spectacular. The book is amazing at subtly giving social injustices of the past an immediacy.

Colorized History pictures. Awesome book!!

This is an incredible awesome exciting history book. The artist is an incredible young lady. Great for that history buff in your family or a friend. Buy this. You will not regret it.

Must buy

Brings history to life. History is filled with millions of little stories that we take as just stories but these photos bring them into another light called the present.

A Great Marriage of Talent

This is one of my favorite gifts ever (kudos to my hubby). I love history and photographs. Beautifully done and well written. The pictures are wonderful but even more so I appreciate the well written summaries of history that make the pictures come to life. It takes a special talent to put a comprehensive understanding into a limited number of words. This book is a great marriage of talent and a joy to read.

Beware little eyes

This books is very well done and interesting. I bought it as a coffee table book. I took a star off bc I have boys (ages 8 and 9) who don’t need to thumb through a book with pictures of dead bodies. There’s one pic of a slain body with a decapitated head. I get it - it’s history..... but it’s just not what I want on my coffee table.

So fascinating

Such a compelling and thought-provoking way to look at history. I love it. After poring through my copy, my fiance actually bought one for his dad for Christmas.

Historical photos brought to life

I really enjoyed this book. It brings history alive, like the pictures were just taken. You can see historical figures that you only saw in black and white photos in color like they really looked when they were alive. It’s an interesting history book also. I learned a lot from it.

Amazing book!!

An amazing collection of historical snippets and beautifully colorized photos. It doesn't read like a book so you can thumb through or start at the beginning and continue in chronological order.

Finally got it and it's amazing. I can study one photo for hours

Amazon messed up the pre-orders for this book. Finally got it and it's amazing. I can study one photo for hours. Its so good.

Very Nice

Informative and visually appealing at the same time.

Stunning color realizations.

This is a very captivating book. The color renditions of many famous photos are really well done, and bring the subjects to life. Most just seem like they were originally shot in color. The historical descriptions are really interesting too. The book is superbly produced.

Historical depiction through colorisation

Great book for history buffs as well as those interested in photography. The addition of paragraphs containing history, adds up to the whole experience. Definitely a book enjoyed by both adults as well as teenagers.

Good, not great.

Nice pictures, history fine. Glad I bought, but thought it would be more.

Best history book

Beautiful, I am a history lover and it took weeks for me to pour thru this book. Very enjoyable and the grandkids enjoyed seeing ppl they had heard about but never saw.

Incredibly well done.

I brought this with me when visiting family for Thanksgiving and barely saw the book for the three days I was there. It was passed from family member to family member to family member. I am so glad to have this a part of my book collection.

Highly recommend for any history lover.

I had very high expectations for this book and they were far exceeded. It's beautiful, interesting, and above all, makes history more relatable and empathetic. Highly recommend for any history lover.

History looks closer in color

Concise and even handed summaries of key events as well as minor asides of interest coupled with meticulous colorized photos bring a new closeness with the past.

A great book by a talented author and artist

Great book by a very talented artist

Absolutely beautiful book

Really mesmerizing. I love it

Beautiful book

Would purchase again and for a gift.

Brilliant

Been a long time follower of Marina Amarals awesome work and this book was a godsend.

A masterpiece of beautiful photos and interesting history

This book is a masterpiece. Page after page of beautifully colorized photographs, with wonderful quotes by leading figures in history as well as text that explains in more detail the history of the time period around each photo. The authors chose a time period encompassing when photography began to be used regularly to document history, until about when black and white photography was probably in the verge of being replaced by color photos. As they explain in the preface, it's impossible to take nearly 100 years of history and cover it exhaustively. They apparently started with nearly 10,000 photos! Just like any other history book, the authors chose what they wanted to emphasize. The history goes from country to country, all over the globe, covering well known as well as lesser known events and figures. The colorized photos are remarkable in making history come alive in a new way. Marina Amaral is a remarkable artist, who has also made a name for herself in the exhibit currently at the Holocaust Museum in Poland called "Faces of Auschwitz". This book is a must-have for your library. And just as an aside, after leafing through the hundreds of pages (photos on EVERY page), I was amazed at the price being so reasonable.

Far exceeded my expectations!

This book provides a fascinating look at events in history that are brought to life through Marina Amaral’s colorizing of photographs. There are ~200 historical photographs which have been colorized and included in the book. It far exceeded my expectations, the most remarkable thing was seeing my kids gather around studying the photographs and reading the commentary about events that they’d largely ignored until now. This book made the events more real and provided a connection to history that just didn’t happen until we saw the pictures in color. I would love to see a follow up book that provides a side-by-side of the black & white and newly colorized photographs.

History comes alive in this handsome book!

Magnificent! The precisely colorized photos, beginning in the 1850's, bring the past back to life. The historical sketches provide context for both the well-known (Gen. Custer, Charles Darwin) and the more obscure (the Opium Wars, war in Libya before WWI). Handsomely bound on high-quality paper, the book makes the historical photos meticulously colorized by Marina Amaral leap off the page. It's both a wonderful resource and an amazing gift. Move this one to the top of your holiday shopping list.

Coffee Table Photos...amateur history.

Xmas gift. Interesting photos but history provided is amateurish, sketchy or just wrong about some US events...e.g. Mexican War was not about US annexation of Texas. Totally omits role US Army played in Operation Torch...invasion on N. Africa. Claims Soviets were our allies in WW2 against Japanese. And did Elvis really have a blue Army uniform?

It’s worth every penny

Finally got it and It’s gorgeous!! One can sit and gaze at the pictures for hours. Ms Amaral has done an amazing job.

Not what I expected

I pre-ordered this book thinking that it be a book on colorizing historical photographs. Not quite. The use of the colorized photos is sparse, mainly used as a lead-in to the next chapter. It is a trip through history, a VERY Quick history, can't even call it highlights. The book is a huge disappointment for me.

The Closest Thing To A Time Machine

This book has quite literally taken my breath away. The painstaking work of Marina Amaral is astounding. There are pictures in this book that will make you smile, shed a tear and shake your head in wonderment. I hope upon hope that many of the unknown subjects ultimately lived long and happy lives. The picture on pages 360-361 of the Warsaw Ghetto made me shudder and want to intervene. Do yourself a favour and buy two copies of this book when you place your order. One for yourself and one for a friend, you'll be pleased you did.

Beautifully executed

An astounding book, that wonderfully marries the colour images that are vivid and realistic with great story line. I thought I'd flick through the images, but I actually read through the entire book. What I like about it is that it shows history that feels familiar but it doesn't do it in a way that is obvious. Many of the images were new to me. The colouring is subtly done and very naturalistic giving you that 'I imagine myself there' feeling. What I like slightly less, is that it is a history book. Yes, that is entirely personal. I'm more interested in social history and if there was a sequel that'd deal with broader human condition, I'd buy it in an instant. As to the argument, somewhat weird, that the colour spoils the images, or somehow is representative of the cultural dumbing down, having read the book, I feel neither robbed of the black and white charm, nor feel myself any stupider for wanting to see what these images could look like in colour. If you prefer black and white, why purchase this book? To my mind, this book is less about aesthetics (although there's plenty enough of that and as I said the book is beautifully executed) and more about fly-on-the-wall time travel experience.

Interesting book marred by insensitive layout - Marina Amaral deserves better

On face value - it's a beautiful book. I've been a follower of the work of Marina Amaral for the last couple of years, so I was looking forward to a book of her work backed up by explanatory text. I know first and foremost it's a history book (albeit somewhat subjective), but the big draw is the colourised images brought to life by Marina Amaral's painstaking research and colourisation skills. Sadly many of the photos are broken up by being spread over two pages so much of the detail in the centre is lost in the gutter of the book. There's also no captions on the photos, which is annoying especially when you don't recognise the subject. Perhaps it was a decision by the authors to do this to make you read the text rather than skip through it like a picture book. Don't get me wrong I'm not one of those people who will only watch colourised classic movies. I love Black and White but Marina Amaral's interpretations are justified and generally stunning. Her work deserves a better platform.

beautiful esoteric history of the world - in colour

This is a stunningly beautiful history book, that has taken as its inspiration a selection of old black and white photographs, which have (following extensive research) been painstakingly coloured by illustrator Marina Amaral. Each decade from 1850 to 1960 is represented first by a time-line of most important events around the world occurring then, followed by a selection of photographs of that time along with vignettes of people, quotes and happenings. Although a lot of major events and prominent people are dealt with, there are also many pictures of ‘ordinary’ people and extraordinary situations, edifices being built, cities being destroyed, the dead, the dying and the living. All types of human life and existence are represented in this esoteric history of the world. I haven’t read every word in the book, but I have been through every page, and admired the superbly coloured photographs. The sections I have read in full were very interesting, and often new to me. This is not a book to be read cover to cover – but one to be dipped into time and time again. The book goes to show, that history need not be in black and white – but can be as vivid and as riveting as the present. It also shows how fascinating even the tiniest details of the past can be. This book was recommended to me by a member of our pub quiz team. When I searched for it on-line, I had expected it to be well outside my price range, but was amazed at how reasonably priced it was – and snapped up a copy immediately. It would make a wonderful (affordable) present for anyone who has even a passing interest in history.

Telescoping time

Absolutely superb, I can't remember a book ever giving me greater pleasure. I hope that the gifted Marina Amaral is busy teaching her techniques to others so that we can look forward to the misty curtain of black-and-white being withdrawn from more historic images. Amazingly effective colourisation technique, especially the difficult flesh hues. Her careful research is an important factor in making her work so completely convincing. (It's a pity that the author, Dan Jones, was not as careful. I haven't yet read the book so this might be the only slip, but I was surprised to see he had fallen into the well-worn trap of assuming that Roger Fenton's photograph of 'The Valley of the Shadow of Death' on pages 34-35 was of Balaclava and the scene of the Charge. However, even if I do read the text at some time, I rather think my attention will repeatedly drift to the ravisihing colourised photographs. Rasputin has just glared at me, Mata Hari dances seductively in a photograph well-known and distant in black-and-white but immediate and fresh in colour, and look how Amaral has handled that contrasty stage lighting - a consummate artist in a technique that has been around for some time and only now finding experts who can release its full power. Utterly, utterly brilliant.

The spectacular transformative effect of colour

I’m a history fanatic and I'm reasonably proficient in Photoshop. But also.. to my surprise, I’ve grown to deeply appreciate Dan Jones’s written material (though I still struggle to see him on my TV screen). Anyway, when I heard about this book I had an instant interest. In particular when I saw that One Direction-esque picture of one of the Lincoln conspirators I knew I had to get this book. I appreciate the diversify of the topics and photos that span 110 years of history through 200 photo’s. It’s often not the most obvious or best-known photos they selected to depict an event. And there is a lot of attention for events that most people would have glossed over by now. In the past I’ve been looking up historic-restored and colourized photos online and they usually leave me astonished and deeply impressed. This book provides you with a selection of the most amazing of such photo’s and they come accompanied by Dan Jones’ excellent explanations and context. The main artist however is Marina, her painstaking job deserves most praise. She only started a number of years ago but she already has grown into an historic photo colourisation authority. The majority of the photo’s now appear as if they were taken recently or just a few decades ago, and generally left me in awe. But I must say a small selection of the photos are a bit less impressive. It might be my perception but here either the colour scheme is unrealistically bright or too much contrast was used. And like with most black and white photos that get colourised; the greyish contrasts continue to shine through the colours. I’m surprised that given all the research Marina and Dan still had to 'choose' colours and tones, as they explain in the introduction. I always understood that there is a scientific method to determine original colours based on the grey tone in the picture, and apparently colour blind people can help to identify colours from grey tones. That brings me to the objections from the historical purists that argue that colourized-in photo’s falsify history. I struggle to agree. Any history that is narrated or depicted is coloured - sorry for the pun – by our own perceptions and contemporary experiences. And the original photos are still there to admire. This work only gives a very different, often more impactful view into historic events. So I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will continue to enjoy the book. Even my wife and kids that are usually hard pushed on historical topics browsed through it with lots of interest. This triggered questions that in turn sparked discussion. Excellent. Given that the book is nicely bound and comes with a hard cover it is now prominently displayed on our coffee table. Can’t wait for part 2 of The Colour of Time!

Beautiful

It’s just beautiful. The preface states that a load of research went into choosing what colours / tones to use for these photos and that, along with a brief potted history surrounding the photo is great. If you already know your world history then you won’t learn anything but you won’t fail to notice the photos brought to life. A purist may be upset that they have been colourised and some brutality may have been lost, but with colour, we may have more empathy to some of these horrors. A wonderful coffee table book

MAGNIFICENT BOOK

This is an amazing, wonderful, and magnificent book! Everyone should have it! I could not recommend it enough! The artistic talent of Marina Amaral is to praise! The writing prose of Dan Jones is to praise! Their collaboration is a gift to all of us! Massive congratulations to both of them!

History Presented in a Way to Take Your Breath Away

I am overwhelmed by this book, it is everything and more than I expected it to be when I pre-ordered it. Every photograph brought to life with colour and a narrative that delivers 110 years of history in an enthralling way.

Will Be Of Interest To All

A fantastic book that will interest all who pick it up. The colorized photos by Marina Amaral are superb and the accompanying write up to each by Dan Jones help to expand the story behind the photos. Buy.This.Book. Its that simple.

A unique achievement

I bought this book for my dad, a historian. My sister saw it and promptly bought two more, for other friends. The colourisations in here are so sensitively and beautifully done. They've completely humanised their subject and made me think of them in completely new ways. Best present for more or less anyone. I will be buying more!

It's colour all the way.

The narrative is secondary. This is all about the photographs. The black and white photographs captured a moment in time and the colour does little to enhance their impact but adds a sort of frisson to the image. As the book does not lie flat the centre of each photograph across two pages is lost so diminishing its original impact. A great book reduced to a very good book.

I love it!

I love this mini version. Very easy to read one handed. Marina does incredible work. It's easy to forget these were coloured and you're just not looking at colour photographs. I really like Dan's little snippets of history explaining the photographs. A great little book.

Great read

Love it!

Amazing

Seeing history in the same colours as we experience life is breath-taking.

Really interesting account of history - great pictures as well

Many accounts of events in history, that you don't normally consider when reflecting on it. Also some of the ones you DO know about, so a really nice compilation. Easy to read to provide at quick context. The coloured pictures was the big surpise, however. I was interested in them from a curious point of view - it was actually the reason i bought the book - as it turns out, they really provide a vivid element to the reading and understanding of the historic events, adding a whole new dimension. All in all, a great book for anyone interested in modern history. I highly recommend this book.

A wonderful book

What a fascinating book! The illustrations are beautiful and the text accompanying them is most informative. I don't know how the book has been produced to sell at such a modest price. Strongly recommended.

Stunning way to bring history to life

This book is an absolute treasure with stunning colourisation's and excellent content. A fantastic way to help make historical imagery more relevant bridging the gap between past and present. Presentation is phenomenal too - just check out under the dust cover!

Great pictures; scant history

Expected a much more in depth piece of history than just the equivalent of York notes to support the nonetheless interesting and vivid images . The pictures deserved better. In the end a coffee table book... except I have it on kindle!!

Brilliant

This is a fascinating book. The colouring has been done beautifully and it really breathes life into these photos particularly the very old ones. I bought it for my son but couldn't resist looking and I know he will love it as he is an historian.

A fresh look at history through photography.

It's amazing how colourising black and white photographs completely changes ones attitude towards the image. I find myself more able to connect with the coloured images. I am in awe of the delicate recolouring work that Marina Amaral has done on these images.

Truly bringing history to life

A really beautiful book and the impact of seeing these historical photographs in colour is quite something. The timelines and narratives accompanying each chapter and image are detailed without being too stodgy and really add to the overall experience. I'm delighted with my purchase.

Superb Book, Buy It!

What a fantastic book, one of the best I have ever read, simply superb. The colorized subjects are really eye opening. Highly recommended........

Very good and historically accurate colourisation of b&w photos

Really good book, which really brings to life black & white photos. The images have been colourised with much though and research to ensure that they are not only beautiful but historically accurate. A real joy to read look at and to own. Very happy with this purchase.

Great Coffee Table Book

This was a present and sits on the coffee table in my parent’s house. They say that lots of visitors pick up the book and have a look which the results in a discussion and chat.

Intro to History

A good potted history of the time period giving general outline of key facts dates people and places. Giving a prompt to look into a subject further if interested

Buy this book

Absolutely wonderful book, have rationed myself to a few pages at a time to make it last! Would make a fabulous Christmas present for anyone. Strongly recommend buying.

Good read.

Bought this for my hubby as he loves history and he has enjoyed the read.

Fabulous

Lovely coloured pictures. History brought to life. Great.

great book

history in photos...nostalgia in print

Unusual approach to history

Well publicised, so I bought the kindle version. Only half of the pictures downloaded - I was left with just the text. And the coloured-in black/white pictures was what it was all about.

Fascinating book worth a read

A really good book very well illustrated and the colour brings to life some images that you would want otherwise just pass by

Really great and important book

This book, I feel, is very important in breaking down the barriers that we have with the past. By doing so, it becomes more personal, thus making us more sympathetic to different time periods, and making us see the problems in our own. Would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone.

Super.

Amazing photographs. Love it. Buy a copy!

Great book

I enjoyed this book, the pictures were really well developed and brought everything to life more than their black and white counterparts do. I’d be tempted to buy a paperback version to flip through

An amazing book I bought for myself. The black & white photographs have been colourized to such a wonderful standard and the historical information which accompanies each picture truly brings history to life.

A must buy

This book is simply brilliant. It is addictive and hard to put down for those with an interest in history indeed it is a very valuable tool to make younger readers connect with the past. Every school library should have a copy.

Recommended to buy

Excellent book, amazing recolouring of black and white photos from history with interesting descriptions.

Beautiful photographs brought to modern life

There is something rather evocative about old photo's being colourised. It makes the subjects a lot more present and adds depth to them. Very much recommended.

Amazing work. Congrats. It will be very good for my classes.

5 stars for pictures, 3 for writing

It's a wonderful book with fascinating photographs, for which I would give the Brazilian artist Marina gets 5.0/5.0. The writing by Dan Jones, though succinct and coherent, seems to have a British bias. He tends to focus on the glorious achievements of British, Queen Victoria, but has conveniently forgotten to write much about their defeats and follies - Sudan, Afghanistan, concentration camps against the Boers in South Africa, Bengal famine where Churchill let millions starve, Suez Canal crisis in 1950s, burning of the Summer Palace in China, over-the-top pageantry (exhibitions of the empire, Durbars in India) during the said period, how Britain fell behind Germany and the US in industrial production from 1890s onwards, and much more. Cherry-picked, western-centric history that paints an inaccurate picture. This book is still worth buying - for the pictures. I loved the one where Tolstoy is telling a story to his grandson and grand-daughter shortly before he died.

Wow

Simple. This book is fantastic. Each picture draws you in as you see so much the original did not have. The black and white photo captured the moment as the place or person was in that instant. As such it is forever special. The work in this book makes you stare, re-evaluate the moment, and draw you in as the colours connect you to what you see today. You find yourself looking all over a photo at details not captured in black and white. Eyes, buttons, signs, clothing and little items in the background. The colourization is not a replacement to the original, it takes the great work of that instant and lifts it into new dimensions. The text along the side gives a great framing to the moment as the book is not just a collection of famous events. It invites you into the world of the picture and the people.

Everyone interested in history should own this book.

I discovered this book by stumbling across one of the author's posts on Twitter. Marina Amaral has the most unbelievable skills in colourising old photographs. It's not simply black and white photos converted to colour automatically - she painstakingly researches the articles of clothing, memerobilia and artifacts to gain insights into what colour they should be. The photos (and their stories) are windows into another time, but somehow it feels more "present" and apt when in colour.

A Perfect Birthday Present (if I do say so myself!)

My husband loves history and loves old photographs. We both hate the colourization of historical images and movies. BUT... this is an interesting concept: making history live in the present by making the images feel more accessible to the 21st century viewer. The images are carefully curated, meticulously researched, beautiful, iconic, moving, and important. It was published just in time for my husband's birthday—SCORE!!

Nice book

Great book, nice picture. It is very interesting to see the old pictures re-colored. They give a very different perspective of the past, and every illustration have a nice description on the picture.

Amazing

Bought this for my bought and he absolutely loves it. I can only imagine how much time and effort went into colourizing all these photos. It makes for a great coffee table book. Love it.

People and places from history brought to life.

Fabulous book. A whole former world reimagined in rich, authentic colour!

Stunning

Absolutely cannot recommend this book enough. There are no words! It's beautiful, chilling and an amazing conversation piece.

This book brings history closer

The photos are amazing. Events that happened 150 years ago look modern and more relatable. Looking at the photos, history does not seem as distant to me any more. A beautiful gift for any lover of history and photography.

Maravilhoso!!

Livro de extrema qualidade com imagens sensacionais. Trabalho impecável.

400+ pages of colorized history for the price of magazine.

It's a must have for all history/photography lovers. I'm following Marina's work for a quite some time and I really love her work. With colorization of black and white images, Marina "shifted" small pieces of history closer to our place and time. I also like the related history texts, especially those quoted texts.

Amazing book

My son absolutely loves this book, pictures are stunning! THANKS!!

Must Buy for History Fans

A must have for everyone. Looking at our past in full colour is an experience unlike any other. The best way I can put it is that this book humanizes our past.

Superbes photos

Wonderful Colourization of Past Photography

Brilliant book , historian and artist collaboration. A must see and read.

Beautiful

Beautiful, wished I had noticed I ordered a small size book.

Gorgeous book

It's absolutely fascinating to see those pictures brought back to life. Also, there are great stories behind them. A must for Photografy and History fans.

meraviglioso

Recomendo.

Verdadeira obra de arte

Excelente trabalho da Marina Amaral e Dan Jones. As imagens são sensacionais e impactantes. O livro é robusto, qualidade impecável.

Good

Good

A superb book of photographs and history

An astonishing book! I am so grateful to Dan Jones (Author) and Marina Amaral (Illustrator) for all their efforts. When the book arrived I sat at a table, sat up straight and turned each page. The book works as a history book showing the famous and the forgotten. Quite often I gasped at how alive the history had become. And a few times I was choked up.

Fabulosas.

História revisitada

Trabalho espetacular de reconstituição histórica. Marina é uma grande artista.

Efficace.

Ben organizzato e sintetico.

Best history book

History feels closer than ever.

Absolutely reccommended!

When you can’t afford a DeLorean...

...but you’ve always wanted to time travel.

Stunning

Absolutely wonderful book. Even if you’re not a history buff, this book will draw you in. The colourizing brings history to life, even more so than the black and white original photos, while the accompanying narrative amazes and informs. A perfect collaboration between two gifted people. I highly recommend this book.

A triumph of history and photographic art

This meticulously compiled book is a real treasure. A selection of iconic images from the period 1850 to 1960 brought to life through carefully researched colourisation. Each image is accompanied by an informative and concise description. Highly recommended.

History comes alive

As someone who loves history I was instantly interested in this book and I'm so glad I ordered it. Marina Amaral's work is outstanding, bringing parts of the past back to life, helping us to see it with fresh eyes. The photos, the chronology and writing is wonderful. Brilliant book to have and savour time and again.

The colour of time after time...

An outstanding rendition of the world we only ever knew in monochrome. Stunning! As ever very prompt delivery. Very pleased.

A masterpiece

Fantastic book, a masterpiece of colour and photography, essential for every coffee table

Excellent!

I get lost in this book on a regular basis. beautifully presented and interesting throughout.

Took my breath away.....

incredible......bringing life to history. I was eagerly anticipating the arrival of this book and have not been disappointed with its arrival. I’m still working through it and the attention to detail is unbelievable....an absolute belter!

Wow!!!!

Amazing book. Have followed Marina on twitter for a while and staggered by how she brings historic imagines to life. Because if this I was desperate to see her work in print, so pre-ordered and waited patiently. I was not disappointed one bit. A fantastic piece of work. The images are stunning and could have been taken yesterday. The historic context Dan adds are equally good giving some real insight and narrative to the journey. This isn’t just a coffee table book, it’s a work of genius. Again.... wow!!!

Not as good as it could have been

This is a substantial book that must have taken hundreds of hours of work to colourise the photographs, so why allow the book to be published in this format when it cries out to be published in landscape. Many of the photographs are spread across two pages meaning that the whole picture can not be seen as the book does not open flat. This really spoils the book, what is the point of publishing what is essentially a book of photographs when many of the photographs can not be seen in their full glory.
