How can you best strive to become an Eminently Qualified Human? How will you hold yourself to the highest possible standard in life? How do you become a better father, mother, husband, wife, son, daughter, public servant, role model, and leader? The answer: through Unmitigated Daily Discipline in all things.

But The Path is difficult, even impossible, if you do not understand what standards to aspire to or how to hold yourself accountable during the journey. With The Code. The Evaluation. The Protocols. retired Navy SEAL and New York Times best-selling author, Jocko Willink provides readers with the essential handbook for grading performance across all of life’s responsibilities, including health, physical fitness, personal conduct, professional conduct, character, leadership, relationships, finance and emergency preparedness.

•    CLEAR STRATEGIES to prepare you for your own personal journey toward becoming an Eminently Qualified Human

•    STRAIGHT-FORWARD TACTICS to prepare your body, mind, and attitude for whatever life throws at you—whether it’s a desire for self-optimization or a need to deal with personal loss, financial hardship, or unexpected tragedies and disasters

•    POWERFUL TOOLS to create honest self-evaluation across every behavior, every action, and every personal goal, both for the short term and the long term

•    UNIVERSAL SOLUTIONS that can be applied to anyone, regardless of age, health, status, or gender

This is not about self-help life hacks. This is a book about standards. Standards you set for yourself. Standards you knowingly may never achieve but strive to reach regardless. The reality is, it’s impossible to measure up to the highest standards in life. No one can truly become an Eminently Qualified Human, but should you be satisfied with just “getting by?” Should underachieving be an option in life? If you fall short of your goals today should you give up on them tomorrow? No. You should grab ahold of The Code. The Evaluation. The Protocols and get on The Path of Unmitigated Daily Discipline in all things.

Some good content, but atypically rough and unpolished

The 'Intelectual Fitness' misspelling under personal development is a surprising error, but reflects the rushed feel of this book which is atypical for Jocko's works (I've read all of the other ones). If this book were a BUDS inspection, the instructor would have had some words. It could have used a once over by an editor or spell checker. The tables showing different scores are excellent, but it needs more material on how to use them. The section on protocols is good and useful and will likely help the folks who need it.

Great work as usual

The work of Jocko and this team inspires me in so many ways. I especially like the evaluative tools, and the notion that you never fully master The Path. As a Marine Vet, a pastor, and student history, I’d be very interested hear a bit about the spiritual component of staying on the Path. I see the physical and mental aspects as being inseparably connected to the spiritual, but let’s confess there’s more to being human than body and mind. A man who charges a hill doesn’t do so from high intellect or cool reason. Though both make for a better warrior. Neither does the devotees of rigorous prayer and fasting hold the line from intellect and calloused knees alone. There’s more at play here. Spiritual Masters like Aquinas and Ignatius tell us to pay close attention to our emotions as well; not to let them take us off the path but rather to let them push us further down the road than cool rationality would have allowed. I suppose I’m doing something I don’t like. I’m critiquing them not for what they said (which is all excellent), but I want to hear them work out what’s been left unsaid.

Great program to quantify and excel in your daily life.

Have you ever wanted a scale to implement as you GET AFTER IT? This program will give you the necessary guidelines and resources to quantify your day to day in order to improve in all categories.

Rather disappointing...

While the points the book may make are likely well grounded in fact and experience to back them up, I must say I'm quite disappointed. Its large letters, sometimes with nothing more than a paragraph for a full page. They could have technically put this in smaller print and made a pocket version. So many grammatical errors and punctuation errors. I don't think it was ever reviewed before publication. With the above said, does have some great points to follow. Just understand that you're essentially reading a PowerPoint presentation in paperback form.

A welcome addition to the Jocko bibliography.

This book offers valuable guidance and encouragement, and is a good supplemental companion to Discipline Equals Freedom. Topics are expounded upon in a concise, tactical way. Many will resonate with the Protocols section, and the clear directives presented. I was disappointed only with the protocol 'Breakup'. It is assumed that the reader is one who has been wronged, and directed solely to that particular audience. There is no suggestion that the reader had played some part in the dissolution of the relationship, or directive to consider and amend their own actions which likely have, in whole or in part, necessitated the parting. Jocko Willink has been married for quite some time, and I for one would have liked to read more from his experience on reconciliation and overcoming challenges in relationships than on ceasing them. That said, I am sure there are some who will resonate with that section and be strengthened in their resolve to leave an unhealthy union, and for their sake I do not mind it's inclusion, just wish it was not so specific, and perhaps had a more restorative message. Overall, it is an empowering guide and reference to living with intention, direction, and discipline.

Manual for life

If you want to expose yourself to experience on how to live a good, proper, happy, healthy, confident, and successful life...…. here is the book for you, no bones about it. BUY IT, READ IT, LIVE IT. Not just once, may times or whenever you need it. You will not be sorry. NOTE: This should be read by all and especially to all YOUNG MINDS everywhere, (even in schools) so they can absorb it early and benefit from it to live truly great lives and make a better world for future generations.

Pocket edition please!

Great book. If you, like me, get annoyed by other self help books that spend way too long getting to the point then you will appreciate this book. My one wish/suggestion: we need a pocket sized version. I’d love to carry this with me as a reference or when I need a reminder to stay on The Path. Unfortunately, this book is roughly 10”x10”. It didn’t need to be. The font is so large that if they had shrunk it down to a normal size it could easily have been put into a pocket edition. It’s not long either, I read the entire thing in 30-40 minutes.

Everything you need is here. Nothing fancy, but the material is here

People are complaining about spelling mistakes and the rough, unpolished look of this book. Really? You guys are missing the whole point of this book. I think people who don't appreciate this book are typically searching out for the 'easy' answer.....you're going to have to work hard to get a 5 on these evaluations daily.... I bought this a few months back, skimmed through it and that was it. But now I'm at a point in my life where I need to take some SERIOUS action on living a disciplined life. I have been flailing along through life the last 10 years just going wherever life takes me, and that just isn't going to cut it anymore. I need the Evaluation Attributes that Jocko outlines here to keep me on track, daily. There is more to life then getting up in the morning, going to work, doing a few chores and then watching TV. Here's the evaluation attributes found on pg. 41: -physical fitness -sleep/rest -diet/nutrition -intellectual fitness -time management -financial management -personal goals -performance -advancement/qualifications -humility -emotional control -mentorship - charity -quality time with family, friends, co-workers -martial arts -weapons training -fire/safety/emergency -neighborhood community These are all the attributes in the evaluation, and you can read the criteria for each score 0-5. This book opened up my mind to what I'm capable of, and all the things I should be focusing on daily. Thanks Jocko

Inspiring self evaluation system for life

This book feels to me like a concise manual and a "workbook" (for lack of a better word) for life. If I had to describe it in one word: practical. The thing I like the most about it, is the system to evaluate yourself. I like it a lot, because it is very difficult to get the best grade and it illustrates clearly that there is always room to do better. In Jocko Podcast 226 with Dave Burke, they talk in detail about this idea. I would recommend this episode as a supplement to the book. There is a handy spreadsheet available at jockopublishing.com/downloads. But for it to make full sense you will need the description in this book. Kept it bookmarked in the kindle cloud reader and judged myself for a few days, which was humbling, positively eye opening and inspiring.

Succeed in leadership and life

Great book on simple life and work advice for succeeding in leadership and in life. Highly recommend this and all of Jocko's work. The Code is the best of what you can be, The Evaluation is daily grading yourself on how close you got to the best standards you can set for yourself, The Protocols is what to do when faced with some of the hard situations in life. The "what to do when you're facing the unknown" protocol was especially helpful in determining the possible decisions you can make, which are likely to have the best outcomes, and taking small steps toward them not big steps, so you can step flexible and maneuverable. You can achieve the biggest things imaginable one small step at a time: using iterative decision making.

Moves quick. Moves you.

Definitely a short, great read encouraging you to live your better-each-day life. While there's no mention of faith/spirituality in the book, I think the point of striving to be a EQH is similar to the concept I've been taught about living the kind of life that represents you when your time's up on Earth. On the evaluation portion, score yourself honestly. It may be defeating, but that's the reality check. For me, I waste time on things that don't matter, and it's part of my Path that needs course correction. If you've been trying to improve yourself and need to start small, pick this up. You'll finish it quick and feel like you're improving already. There are also some printable resources at the end, too. Get after it.

Get your butt in gear!

This is a great way to guide yourself towards success. It has a lot of motivation and good points to make about how to cope with life’s hard moments. A short read. Can be completely done in about 20 minutes if you’re a fast reader. But the points last a lifetime. Definitely will be a reference book.

Get on the Path

This is one of those books, that even though it's short, it is a challenge. You may have heard Jocko's podcast or read his other books, this one is similar to DEF Field Manual that is good to use, have on hand, and read a chunk to help check yourself. I will always be "striving to become an eminently qualified human" - getting on the path helps you on this journey. And the journey is the destination.

Guidance for all

I firmly believe that our world and society would be far better if more people followed the wisdom Jocko shares in this book. It was short (received it today and already finished it) and to the point. Very easy to follow and retain the information. Thanks Jocko for sharing guidance some of us were never taught and helping us all be better versions of ourselves.

Guideline for life

It's worth it for the life fitness report you need to objectively evaluate your life on many markers. Of course, reading it is easy (it's very short and large text) but implementing will be the key to maximizing how effective it will be for your life and striving to be an eminently qualified human being.

Practical. Not Layered. Straight Up Evaluator

So, this book is a manual. It isn’t Jocko the Shakespeare loving, English major discussing the nuances of personal development. It is Jocko distilled. I’m using the manual as a quick refresher once a week to make sure I stay on the path. And what is the path? That’s up to you because it has to lead to your goals. All the steps for setting goals and making decisions are in the book. The Code. The Evaluation. The Protocols. will reinforce what you already know, especially if you are on the cusp of a life change or are already on the path and need a push. Definitely get after it.

If you're a trainwreck buy this book

The author uses very direct language and covers a comprehensive set of life events that can knock you off your game. He provides concise instructions to help you get yourself out of a rut. This is 100x better than therapy because it doesn't rely on fickle feelings, but on deliberate goals and real actions.

Great, well structured daily manual for all of us

I liked the direct, user-friendly approach of the author and co-authors. The book is divided into a few logical parts focusing on different aspects of human life, potential challenges and obstacles on the way and tools how to mitigate the negative impact in order to get back on the road. The information contained won’t be something revolutionary (it’s not the objective of the author) to the reader yet the well structured content makes it a super easy and super fast to read and to get maximum amount of practical steps from it.

Empecemos

Este libro es una oportunidad para que las personas aprendan y reconozcan que todos podemos empezar en cualquier momento a mejorar nuestra vida.

Thank you, Jocko and team

Thank you and your team for putting this together. I appreciate all of your knowledge and support you in your endeavors. Zeke Contreras Jr May 25, 2020 San Antonio, Texas

Amazing book quick read but life Changing!

Extremely well organized and written....this short book has truly inspired me to be a better person, and hold myself to a higher standard in ALL areas of my life . Get this book!

4 Stars

Not sure if it's worth $7 maybe $4.00. It's not even an hour read. A $6.00 magazine is at least an hour or a 90 minute read. I love Jocko but 4 Stars because of price.

Protocols for life

Solid, practical advice for effectively navigating through life. Recommended for young starting out in life and needing advice for a variety of situations.

Ten Stars

Fantastic, compact and quick read from Jocko. A great guide to self-discipline. If you are looking for a pat on the tushy, this is not for you. This is a blueprint to actually getting better, by yourself, without a bunch of hand-holding. There is no secret, there is only discipline.

Simple and effective

really glad these guys got around to distilling this down to this format. been waiting since the first podcast. Must read for any Jocko acolyte / fan.

To the Point

Short, simple but effective advice with a clear plan of action. A quick read but powerful. I've bought additional copies to give friends and family.

Great Framework for Improving your life

I love how Jocko inspired us to set up goals and missions for our life and relentlessly work towards achieving them. The consistent reflection allows us to stay consistent and get back on the path before we fall too far. Motivates the he'll out of me to take advantage of my time and achieve my goals.

No punches pulled

The truth is hard to swallow. Jocko is real and lays it out very clear. We choose our path,it is not easy but we cannot be a victim no matter bow tough life gets. Thank our for the truth.

The chances you will hit a target you haven't described and aren't aiming at is low

This is the book we all need to chart course along our personal path. The protocols should be followed by everyone and provide a framework to build my own.

Great starting point to improving your position in life

I very much enjoyed the content of this book. It his usual prose, Jocko Willink is direct and succinct. His content delivers. The evaluation table that he includes is phenomenal.

Soild Guideline

Solid quick reference. Another tool that is quick to use rather than referencing longer page books, or hunting for something good I read that resonated with me. Everything in this guideline is the mindset I strive to achieve and have been exposed to since I read my first book written by a Navy SEAL. Grateful to have access to this information. And thanks Jocko for writing and putting this stuff out there.

Meh

As a long time Jocko fan all I can say about this “book” is... meh. If you’ve listened to the podcast or read anything else from him then there is nothing new here but that’s the message after all; discipline equals freedom, insert explanation here and write a new book. I’m all about it but I wish I would have saved the $$$ and skipped this purchase.

Straight to the point

No sugar coating, no fluff. Jocko gets straight to the point in the shortest words possible. Turn your life around and set in the place the discipline needed.

Quick read

Love Jocko's books. This is just a super quick read that just tries to keep you disciplined. Great workouts at the back of the book as well

Good overview of productive behavior. Definitely worth reading

This was a good summary of previous Jocko dialogues on several matters that are pertinent for daily life. Worth reading by all.

AN INFORMATIVE/INSPIRING LITTLE BOOK FOR ALL AGES

Short, sweet, and to right to the point. If you’re a fan of Jocko Willink, you’ll love this book. If you don’t know anything about Jocko Willink...you’ll still love this book. A book anyone of any age will benefit from reading.

Powerful guidance.

Jocko lays it down in the most direct and powerful way. The directions here are a workbook for being the human being you want to be.

Excellent Manual

This is an awesome read that helped me wrap my head around the importance of trying to live the best life I can, and it is a strong push to let me know I can do a lot more. I plan on reading it many times so I can keep going harder.

Be Better

Pretty straightforward self evaluation. Certainly makes you want to do better at life or at least highlight that you are not fulfilling your potential. If you truly embrace and act upon what is suggested you will be a better person over time.

Discipline Equals freedom

This book will help you stay on "the path" and keep you humble and honest about your self improvement and becoming the eminently qualified human.

Very concise, no fluff

This book is straight forward, not much theory. Just protocols to get you going. Helps you make life declarations / missions statements. But simply. And gives you some solid recommendations if you don't have any.

Great book for anyone looking to better themselves

Another amazing leadership book. As someone who knows Jocko, Sarah, and Dave I’m glad they put this down to share with everyone

Great guide

Very motivational and provides great jumping off point. Great to read a book that reminds us that the outcome maters and we have to deal with our problems and be better than we were yesterday.

Get Some!

Get you some! You know you need this book. Stop reading reviews and buy this book. Its time you learn how to review yourself!

Not simply a guide

Not simply 'a guide' to getting your life on track, but a blueprint on how to get on and stay on 'the path', and detailed procedures of what to do if you go astray. This text is a must for enthusiasts of 'The Jocko Mindset'. A detailed analysis of this work can be listened to on episode 226 of the Jocko Podcast. Get to it!

Jocko All Day

Typical JOCKO. Straightforward, to the point and exceptional. A very practical guide for following many of Jocko’s most often repeated teachings and suggestions.

Good.

This book brings together in one place more than i have learned through years and mentorship. I plan to pass copies of this on to others. Thanks.

Not worth your time

First it’s printed in a poor font, it might just be me but it was annoying. Second, the material presented isn’t worth your money. There’s much better self improvement books out there, by ex-military if that’s what you want, and civilians.

Cheap

This paperback was cheaply made and might as well of been a free handout passed out at a jocko rally. The other books are great and have substantial material in them. This was totally a money making endeavor.

Motivation

Jocko speaks my language. Personal responsibility, get up and do whatever it is you want to do.

Excellent

Excellent book. I have all of Jocko's books and learned much from them. Recommended.

Very strong

How to deal with reality? How to make your life better? Specific steps. Actions to take. Super practical. Great template, and you can adjust it to your needs, of course.

Jocko is just straight up genius

You can do a lot worse than listening to Jocko. He says it like it is. Take it to heart, act on it. You might become a better person.

Practical, solid, pragmatic advice

The advice in this book is spot on: I told my teenage boys that if I ever die suddenly, they can reference this book for guidance. It is exactly what I would tell them about how to handle the various challenges that life presents. I’ve read all of Jocko’s books and I’ve given copies to family and friends as gifts. This guy gets it.

Missing pages???

Just got this today. Started to read through and I like the content, but....my book starts on page 28 on chapter 4.1. Am I missing the first half of the book?

Hoya, - get it, read it, take action, and help someone else do the same!

Great book, short read, and excellent content. I would get this if I where you. This will help you move forward with your life. In the end, isn't that what it is about anyway?

Pamphlet

Not impressed, it’s a Pamphlet and the information its the same as all the other unsuccessful self help trash.

You will not be disappointed.

A simple way to put order to all parts of life. A way fashioned from a military mindset. It a great concept that has lots of utility in real life.

Jocko wrote this

That's all you need to know. Did Jocko write it? Yes, Get it. It'll change your life.

Probably would be good audio version

Good common sense hard work, shorter version of Discipline Equals Freedom.

Good reminder that we aren't everything we could be

Read this book if you are interested in pursuing the strongest and best version of yourself. There's nothing wrong with knowing you aren't everything you could be and working to close that gap.

Read & Follow

Stop being an oxygen thief. If you want to be effective you must start inside your own skin. Get on the path and make your way to the life of an eminently qualified human. Get some.

I’m confused why so many people gave this 5 stars..

Not sure what I was expecting here, but this was disappointing. It’s filled with general, incredibly basic ideas. Google, “motivational quotes” and print the results. Same idea.

Jocko Willink's stuff is top notch

Books, drinks, whatever . All of it

Awesome Read!!!

I am a big fan of Jocko’s. I have read Extreme Ownership and Dichotomy of Ownership and his other books. This one is awesome! Jocko spells it out in his usual straight forward fashion. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for the way to turn their life around.

Great read!

Read it now.

It’s one of the most straightforward texts on owning yourself. Clear and powerful. Just buy it and read it now. Think and execute.

A must read!

Other than the whole book itself being a must read... The personal evaluation pages can and should be another book in itself. The value obtained from the evaluation pages are priceless. I am forever grateful to Joe Rogan who recommended this book and to Jocko who wrote this fabulous book. Nothing but GRATITUDE!!

Large font. Lots of white space. First book I have bought from jocko - with high hope. Now I feel insulted by the apparent lack of substance. Can’t even bring myself to read it. Almost like it burns my eyes. Honestly surprised. Could probably be 30 pages in adult font and formatting.

Get After It

Great Read - Nice to have on coffee table for daily readings

Buy It, Read It, Get After It

Absolutely awesome stuff from Jocko, Dave, and Sarah! This book gives a clear PATH of minor daily changes that can result in major life changes. In less time than it takes to watch an episode of Tiger King, you can read this book from cover to cover and come out with a focused, disciplined mindset and action plan.

Jocko Distilled

I have read all of Jocko’s books and listen to his podcasts regularly. This is the distillation of everything he preaches in an easily absorbed SOP. This is not a read it once and put it away forever book, this is like the art of war for modern life, every time you read it you will learn something new about yourself.

Just Ok, mostly unnecessary fluff

I'm a BIG fan of Jocko, but this mini-book seems unnecessary. With the exception of the daily evaluation sheets, everything else in the book is fluff. It's pretty light on substance. Most of it reads like passages from Discipline Equals Freedom that have been rewritten, and the Protocols section is basically the advice he's given in his podcast about how to deal with various problems in life like breakups etc. The book can be summarized as (1) You need clear goals (2) You need a method to achieve them (3) here's a general way to track some progress. evaluation sheets on their own would have been sufficient, and if you have them then the rest of the book is totally unnecessary. If there's an audio version that comes out with Jocko narrating, that might be worth it because hearing Jocko read the book could give it some additional oomph.

Did they spend more or less than an hour writing this? I'm genuinely curious

I typically consider Jocko to be a prime example of the type of guy who isn't scared by hard work, but the hard work of writing this code book was apparently too much. The text is very rough and in many ways the advice is not thought through. There is a method of measuring your efforts in some areas but no actual way to apply this knowledge to your life or what it means. A lot of the grading scales don't even make logical sense, especially considering some things are items you can do on a daily basis and some are things that would be more of a weekly or monthly basis, but they are judged the same. Now that I have my scoring data what would I even do with it? This is very poorly thought out and If I'm being totally honest, I believe I could have written a "book" like this in less than three hours. If Jocko can't spend some real man hours of his time on something he is SELLING to his audience, I need to rethink whether or not he actually backs up the lifestyle he says he does. Yes, I understand this isn't meant to be Jocko's magnum opus but I paid money for this, and the least you could do is create a product that makes me feel like you tried. You didn't try Jocko.

Will increase your deadlift 5000%

Like many, episode 174 of the Jocko Podcast really struck a chord with me and highlighted the fact that no, I'm not kicking ass like I could be. I work hard but succumb to feeling lazy more often than an eminently qualified human would. During this COVID-19 pandemic, I've been seeing a lot of social media posts that broadcast the message "it's totally ok to take this time off, sleep in, rest and recover, play some video games, and recharge" and something just didn't seem right to me about shouting that out to the world. Then this guide comes along and throat punches me saying "no, don't listen to that nonsense. This is the time to GET AFTER IT." This message is the more useful message, the one that will make America even better and stronger and more resilient. This is the message I choose to listen to, and this book helps clarify your strengths and weaknesses so that you can improve the areas that need help. One weird side effect that I wasn't expecting was that it also increased my deadlift by 5000%...did this happen to anyone else?

Strategy is for Amateurs; Implementation is for Professionals

Clear, simple and actionable guide for high individual performance. Although totally consistent with the Willink philosophy expounded in "Discipline Equals Freedom", this book differentiates by offering the reader a daily "evaluation" form. This form, which is modeled after the US Marine Corps formal evaluation procedure, invites the reader to formally review their own performance across several dimensions on an annual, monthly, weekly and daily cadence. If implemented, this evaluation can become the basis of an operating system brings Willink's impact from mere motivation to end-to-end life transformation.

Suggestions for the Second Edition

“The Code” is a good first draft, but suffers from a significant structural (argumentation) issue. Who am I? Why does my opinion matter? I am nobody, and it doesn’t, aside from being in your audience. I have nearly all of your books. You could consider me a member of your target demographic: the brain-washed underachiever. I look forward, for instance, to the forthcoming Warrior Kid novel that grapples with some of the more challenging aspects of growing up (and parenting): NATHAN: Is it true that Marc has become a vegetarian? KENNY: Yeah, he’s still dating that girl. 21. A Warrior Kid keeps it holstered so as to avoid accidentally bringing about a new Warrior Kid. Returning to “The Code,” however, the book’s critical logical disconnect is its proscriptions for effort in all areas (absolute effort) versus prioritized (relative) effort, sometimes on the same page (14 — “We must aim to implement unmitigated daily discipline in all things…What aspects of life should be focused on? Where should the pursuit of excellence be concentrated?”). With respect, these are contradictory themes, NOT a dichotomy, Commander. “…And when he prepares everywhere he will be weak everywhere,” to quote a long-dead Chinese general. Can one achieve mastery in every facet of [his] life? “We will be better mothers…fathers…” (As a parent I own, at best, 50 percent of this equation. I have but two tools in my parental arsenal: persuasion and compulsion. "I can't make you do something," said Dad, "but I can make you wish you had.") I would offer that the book, for consistency, would benefit from deciding on whether it wants to advocate absolute effort OR relative effort. I would offer that relative effort is more realistic, more sustainable, and less apt to discourage the reader when he or she falls short of the absolute standard—BUT I acknowledge that the Jocko brand is about maximum effort. And you do have built-in ambiguity / subjectivity in terms of your measurements (“the highest possible [not further defined] standard”…”your full potential”…”personal success”). Two additional broad recommendations for your consideration: First, “The Code” could be a little less proscriptive, and a little more interactive. Give space to the reader to allow him or her to write in what is more important to them in terms of development. You may want to take a page from tactical decision making games and provide an opportunity for the reader to list (at least three) assumptions at the outset. A diagnostic or personal inventory may also be of use. Where am I weak? (Or “What is my developmental?” If you prefer a softer term...what am I saying?). Ask someone who knows you well to be candid with you. Maybe include a list of the usual subjects: critical thinking, writing, speaking/briefing, time management, follow-through, attention to detail… Consider adding additional “moral” components to the character/leadership evaluation, including integrity and space for a reader who is religious (or “spiritual”) to identify benchmarks. And include a blank column for the reader to identify specific metrics they can use to evaluate their progress. If you pursue a relative effort fix to the logical disconnect, consider adding space for the reader to identify what they are willing to sacrifice in pursuit of prioritized objectives. One reason that the relative effort model is more realistic is because what one values changes over a lifetime. What matters to the young single serviceman (chow, payday, liberty) can differ from the older, married military officer, for instance. Second, and finally, I would lose some jargon, like Eminently Qualified Human®. But you do you. At least you didn’t use SMEAC--the sound a 5.56mm round makes when it ricochets off the XO’s helmet.

Simple. Thought Provoking. Yet Thin

In an attempt to boil down the message and the path, there is a near Taoist emptiness to it. Why? Because it's not about words, it's about action. A 100K word book about what steps you need to take in your life is a waste of everyone's time. It's perfect for those looking for a quick injection of "Get after it." The format of the book, however, is a bit shady on kindle. The rubric system and the downloads could be better developed. Certainly, in terms of readability, the rubric is not formatted correctly for the kindle.

Don’t bother - check it out from the library

Jocko is slipping. This is 81 pages of content, but really is about 15 if you put it into a normal book font and layout. Very similar to Discipline Equals Freedom in terms of content layout. Insanely large type and surface level content. The evaluation guide is a good start, but could be unpacked to provide more detail, examples, etc. Leadership Strategy and Tactics was very good and what you would expect from Jocko and team. This should be checked out from the library and read in 25 minutes.

Worth buying but not Jocko's best

I've been waiting for this ever since the "Eminently Qualified Marine" podcast when Jocko mentioned the idea of developing something similar for the everyday human. The evaluation model presented is very useful as a template but I'm planning to modify it to include some areas not addressed that I want to include as evaluation standards for myself. It would be nice if that table of the different standards was available as an editable Word or Google Doc file, but I'm basically creating my own version as an extension of this work. Overall this is a valuable addition to the Jocko bibliography. But I agree with some of the other comments about disappointing errors that should have been addressed before publishing. Jocko will look back on this and be disappointed at having "Intelectual Fitness" out in the world under his name. I believe Jocko mentioned on the podcast rolling this out that they self-published this, rather than going the route of professional editing and publishing as for some of Jocko's other books. Perhaps that was still the right decision if the priority was getting something out quickly. But honestly, the lack of "professional" direction shows, both in the typos and at a more conceptual/content level. Looking at the disparate sections (Code, Evaluation, Protocols) I'd say the whole is equal to but no greater than the sum of the parts. It seems like these were three separate work products Jocko had in mind, and while they are each valuable in some way, it isn't clear why these needed to be presented together. It would have been beneficial to have the authors tie together how these ideas fit with each other and the larger Jocko ethos. Would a good editor have found a way to bring that out? If I were the editor I would have said to spend the entire book length (or more) going more in depth on Evaluation, and gotten the Code and Protocols out in another format (paid or otherwise).

Great as always

I’ve read books twice the size of this and gotten less out of them. I already do some of the things in this book daily and others not so much. This gives me a framework of what I need to improve and work harder on, without endless pages that are tedious and boring. I’ve read other Jocko books and they are all the same. Simple, concise and practical with no fluff! I love his philosophy on discipline and working to better oneself everyday. Highly recommend all his books and podcasts.

Jocko is the man

If you're at all familiar with Jocko and his ethos and code via his books and podcast, the first half of this book will be a bit redundant. The real meat is in the latter part where he gives beautifully constructed tactical solutions to just about anything life throws at you. The depth of his acceptance of human emotion and trials brought tears to my eyes. I really enjoyed this book because it gave a deep dive into how to deal with life. Thank you, again, Jocko, for showing your heart and giving excellent ways to become an Eminently Qualified Human.

Awesome

Wonderful story of an aging Navy Seal, coming to grips with age and losing in Martial Arts to a young powerful Hawaiian fighter. Much like the movie "The Hustler", Jocko must deal with father time and choose to give his knowledge and skills to Echo as he can no longer physically match him in the ring. Seriously, it's an awesome book developed from our beloved USMC evaluation process, modified for civilians. Civilians can measure their progress in several categories; sleep, nutrition, training etc, and design a number to it and see where they fail. Great concept. Nice short and sweet book.

Waste of time - just a bunch of internet bullet-points

This book is just a conglomeration of self-help mumbo-jumbo bullet points. It’s a bunch of common sense things tou will be doing already if you are interested in your well being. I read it in about 10 minutes. As others said the font looks like it came feom a 1960’s IBM selectric typewriter 🤪 Anyhow, it’s just too basic and not worth reading. Glad it was free on my KindleUnlimited.

Good advice

As always, Jocko puts together life helping checklists for us. I enjoy his take on moving ahead during a crisis. This crisis could be any tragedy that hits you. Even betrayal, something we all experienced yet no one tells how to deal with it. At least, we rarely get good advice, generally emotional advice that makes things worse in the heat of the moment. Nice collection of life coaching checklists. Quick read, not even an hour, good advice and so concise.

Short - Powerful - Insightful - Life changing

I dont know what it is with Jacko, even in this short work he could pack a punch of motivation.i created my own version of evaluation. This was the missing piece in my personal development.i read books attend seminars, but dont bothe tracking. This book reminded me the value of measuring your actions. Every one should get this book- even high school kids(or may be especially highschool kids).

clear and concise steps for immediate aciton

Jocko Willink has a way of cutting out the crap and getting down to the important details and facts of anything. he provides clarity like no other. I am currently reading through all of the books Jocko has authored and find each one to be immediately useful. I will be reading the children's books that he has written to my kids now, and when they are able to read, I will ask them to read those books.

Good Deal

Be your own Good Deal Dave. Be "lucky" like Jocko. Just because you don't think you're ever going to deadlift 8000# doesn't mean you shouldn't try. You'll accomplish more by trying and this book helps clarify how to start on the path and maintain. Do us all a favor and be better.

Spoken like a true Warrior.

While it has zero emphasis on Spiritual growth, this is a great book on self development. It emphasizes that you need to take care of yourself for your own good and the good of others. Get ego out of the way. This book is worth the read and something I plan to implement!

Concise and to the point, no fluff here

As most readers of 'self-help' books I've read dozens, if not hundreds, of them. Most are very good and are kind of variations on a theme. The two best I've read are 'The Slight Edge' and this book. It's pretty simple. Set a goal, stop making excuses and get to it. 'Nuff said.

Provides clear guidance on how to become better overall

Before this book I was trying to measure my professional performance but I didn’t have any standard to aim to and most of it was a guess work. This book lays out The Code which is good to strive for and lays out evaluation system for most important areas of human’s life. Even if you won’t agree with the Code and the Evaluation it is still worth checking out and adjusting to your needs. Also last section provides Protocols on how to deal with hard situations in one’s life, which is also very useful. Excellent short and very practical book.

Excellent framework

Daily “Examen” - “how did I do today and how do I hope to get better tomorrow?” The chapter on the protocols are interesting and show how we can be active and get ourselves out of the ruts we get into. Without the idea of a higher power - the Path is the closest analog. I think that the “service/mentorship” piece deserves more weight but overall excellent. EO continues to be an important part of my life...

Simple, not easy.

This concise work on how to manage the most important aspect of your life - which is your WAY of life - hits the spot. In a style that is typical for Jocko and the EF crew, we get some tough learning to do thrpugh brutal honesty with ourselves. If you're looking for a selfhelp book, don't buy it. If you're looking to implement some changes in your life and enter the Path of Continuous Learning, you're in for a treat

time well spent

A direct no nonsense guide to personal development. Provides tools for introspection and personal evaluation. What is tracked and measured leads to progress, improvement, and with daily discipline will lead to ultimate success in the areas that matter to each of us as indivuals.

Excellent life framework!

Solid - concise - transformative information. Everyone needs to read this manual. The best insight is in the You against You framework: ‘Ask yourself how much effort you put into something and measure it against what you are capable of.’

Great guidance for being a well rounded human!

This was a quivk and to the point read. I especially enjoyed the evaluation portion of this book so you can measure areas of your life and see where improvements can be made. Another great book from Jocko! I'm very motivated to take action and take charge of my life.

Excellent

Everyone life's journey is different. This book is absolutely the best self help book I have ever read. Being blessed with many of life's lessons and having the natural ability to learn from my own mistakes have made me read and study Why? So I could be better prepared for my next encounters or try and deal with life's disappointments. This is not a self help book. It is a life essential book!

Fast and to the Point!

A great quick read! Lots in this book applies to me, and I’m sure plenty of others are benefiting from it as well! Thank you Jocko! I will stay and continue to pursue the Path!

Awesome

Thanks again for your service and your work. Your ability to take lessons you learned in the military and offer them up to civilians is gift I don’t undervalue. You da man!

Thanks so motivational.

After watching a large amount of jockos and echos podcasts I downloaded this book. I didn’t read it right away. I had a real bummer of a day yesterday and also the day before. I decided to read it today. Glad I did, I was still feeling down when today started. I have decided to take the advice that’s given in this book into my life. I’m going to reevaluate my life and myself starting today. Thanks again.

Excellent

This book along with The Gift of Fear by Gavin DeBecker are books that can and should be gifted to loved ones. Very powerful and methodically laid out.

Simple 2 step process

I can summarize the book's message as follows: "get up at 4am and kick ass at everything." If you can do it great but I think there is a small percentage of people who want to live like this.

Great work as usual

I have always enjoyed Jocko's books. This is a quick and to the point read for people that aren't readers. This is a great way to reach a completely different audience.

Has some unusual twists to a daily checklist

Good advice, strong motivation, would be hard to accomplish even for the most structured and disciplined given the realities of home life outside of the military.

Great quick read

Very motivating. Quick reminder to get back on the path and suggestions on how to improve your life. Finished in less than an hour. Will reread

Owners Manual for Life

This is a quick read about how to live your life. Nothing earth shattering here, just very practical advice on how to live well. "Being eminently qualified is being on The Path that does not end."

True code to live by

Great book and guide on metrics to help measure a life worth living! Actionable and effective. I highly recommend reading!

Short and sweet

Don't just read this book. Apply the information within. The book is extremely short but full of actionable content, worth the read.

The Path

Great read and good structure to place within life. A little vague at times but overall a great read. Highly recommended

Short and Sweet

I like this book. Zero filler. It drills the point that many of us walk through life thinking we are 4 and 5/5s in life, thinking we’re above average — but when you compare yourself to an absolute standard, like the one presented here, we find out that we are 1s and 2s in most things and we have a lot of room for improvement.

This is a literal mantra to live by.

This book is a great way to create a personal code to drive you along a path that will change your life and maybe others around you. Another masterpiece by Jocko. Thanks.

Straight to point

Wake up and move towards your goals reaching them or not it’s all in the path so you really never fail

Must read

If you like any of Jocko’s books, stop whatever you are doing and read this NOW! Almost like a follow up to DEF-FM

Highly recommended

Excellent. I wish I had read this book 20 years ago.it may be almost impossible to live by my code but it definitely has brought me up to a new level

Excellent as usual

Jocko gives another no nonsense narrative on how to be the best version of yourself. A fast easy read that can be used as a reference guide over and over.

Awesome

Short and inspirational a great pick me up to stay on the path. I look at this book as I would a motivational video. It encourages good behavior and habits and should be read when you fall or deter from the path in anyway just pick up the book reevaluate your good to go

Basic advice for a life well lived

I didn’t know what I was getting into when reading the book. Author made a great attempt at designing a template for living a good life and provides general advice of how to move out tough situations. 3 stars for the rubric and grading scale. Could be more thought out and comprehensive.

Evaluation for your life

Been waiting for this book since hearing the podcast that covered eminently qualified Marrines. Great way to see and track what you need to be successful in life.

I listen to his Discipline speeches daily!

Jocko clarifies and backs everything you need in order to succeed in life! Waking up early, exercising, getting tasks accomplished daily, and maximizing your time on this planet is the true way to live!

So needed

Great motivational book. Not only does it motivate but also helps you keep the motivation going. I recommend and good luck to everyone or should I say, work hard everyone.

It's discipline, plain and simple

Jocko at his most distilled. Gets right to the heart of the matter: discipline every day can bring happiness and success in life.

Great

Great guideline for life situations! It seems like such a simple process to have a plan and a way to evaluate our life but before this it is hard to say you could find it! Thank you

Simple and to the point

Good guidance in less than 60 pages. I’ll have this one on-hand as a reminder that I need to snap out of it and move my ass.

Simple, concise, effective

30 minute read w/lasting impact. Helps identify areas of improvement in your life and how to deal w/common life challenges.

Great morning reading

Me encanto Gracias Jocko Willink.

No fluff

To the point and direct. Basically get up and get it done. If you fall down, then get up again. It's your choice, be the Eminently Qualified Human that you can or don't, but you make the decision.

Awesome Short Read 🤘🏻

Straight to the point and very effective. Nicki writes very clearly and efficiently. No fluff like other authors to just fill pages. Every sentence is written for a reason and to serve a purpose. READ IT

Quick Quality Read

Quick read full of valuable resources that can easily be implemented into anyone's life. Broken down for quick reference as needed.

Should be required reading

Outstanding. This book is straightforward and actionable. It is a map for succeeding in life even when life turns upside down.

This is an excellent summary of things you know you should be focused on and delivered useful tools for evaluation and tracking what's important. Good DOPE

Simple

Simple and effective to get you back on track when you aren’t focused and aren’t executing cleanly at life or at work

The Code Review

Quick book with great reminders on many different aspects of life. Jocko always keeps it simple and while it seems like things can’t be handled that, they actually can.

Valuable lessons learned

Great book and can take valuable life lessons from it, I'll definitely do my best to implement the code in my life for the better.

Stand by to get some.

Outstanding in every way. Great handbook! I highly recommend this book, especially for those who need a little discipline and organization in their lives.
