Beautiful stories. Beautiful narration

I guess I'm a bit of a late-comer; I didn't discover these books until I was an adult. I have since enjoyed them for years. Lewis is a master storyteller and has beautiful symbolism. As my eyes have gotten worse over time, I have been turning more and more to audiobooks. Some are better than others. These were magnificent. I have experienced a fair few at this point, do I can say that with some confidence. I loved the narrarion. Each book has a different performer. They all did a wonderful job. I was blown away by the quality, and I will enjoy listening to them over and over. They were well worth the cost to me. Beautifully done!

Great performances, nice box, very nice set.

Everybody knows about the books, so this is about the AUDIOBOOK CD SET. The Audiobook CD set is a great idea, and it was well executed, too! The box set comes with 7 cd folders, all made of paper. each cd folder holds 3~5 CDs depending on the book. They are all packaged very nicely and the CD's are very nice too. The first CD of each book has EXTRA FEATURES! They are accessible with a computer, and include illustrations(drawings) from the original books. As far as I can tell, the audiobook leaves NOTHING OUT from C.S. Lewis's text. Every reader is excellent. There is no background music or any other form of dramaticism besides the actor/reader's performance. Of course, the reader will read the dialogues imitating the voices. This really helps keep track of who's speaking, and the acting is all very good. It's humorous to listen to Michael York speaking as Lucy, but they switch back and forth so well that I did NOT find it distracting. In fact I thought it was a great performance. The only problem I had is the volume since I listened to the whole set in my car - if you don't have a very nice car, you'll have to crank up the volume a LOT to hear the voices. That's not because my car audio sucks, but because the highway road noise drowns out the audiobook. On certain books (I think it was the Last Battle) the reader sometimes whispers and uses a booming voice at other times. This WILL hurt your ears if you're listening with headphones or have the volume way up. HOWEVER, I can't imagine a better audiobook version. As far as I know, this set is the best READING of the books. There are other audiobooks which are NOT READINGS, BUT THIS SET IS AN ACTUAL READING. Each CD is read by a different narrator. People like Patrick Stewart, so you ARE getting your money's worth in terms of acting caliber. My favorite was Michael York. One of the actors had an annoying voice, but I forget which... In all, the entire set is 31 CD's holding 31 HOURS of material. Enjoy them!

I LOVE THIS AUDIO SERIES!

This is one of the best audio reads I have heard. Each full-length book is read by an outstanding British actor: Kenneth Branagh, Michael York, Alex Jennings, Lynn Redgrave, Derek Jacobi, Jeremy Northam, and Patrick Stewart. It's bedtime stories for adults, as well as children, as only C.S. Lewis and these most excellent actors can produce. There are no disappoints here. None.

This is a wonderful product!

In my opinion, this is a wonderful audio rendering of a set of classic books. The audio was clear. The disks worked in my CD player. The various narrators did a terrific job with bringing the characters to life! If you enjoy The Chronicles of Narnia, this is an excellent audio version that I feel confident in recommending. I believe this product is excellent!

Wonderfully read and very enjoyable

Love this series!! I had looked everywhere for these for quite some time. My children (11,9,7,4) and I love listening to books on tape especially for long car trips (we live in the boonies) and these are ranked among our favorites! In fact the first time we were listening to them we arrived at the grandparents house and they were actually complaining about getting there before the story ended -it’s a 3 hour drive! Buy them and enjoy you won’t regret it!

Great audiobooks!

My husband and I absolutely LOVE this set of The Chronicles of Narnia audiobooks. The stories are all read by actors who do an amazing job of giving special voices to the characters and who paint pictures of what is happening in the stories by the way they read the books. I can't imagine that I could like a movie rendition, or even an audio dramatized version of these stories more than these audio books that are simply read in their entirety. They're captivating! I really like that you get the REAL story - it hasn't been changed and nothing has been deleted for the sake of filming or making it dramatic. And you still get to use your imagination to create the scenes in your mind. We don't have any children yet, but when we do, we will definitely listen to these with our kids.

Excellent Performances (Unabridged Audio CD)

This review is for the Audio CD production, rather than the stories themselves. While I was a bit surprised to discover I didn't much care for several of the stories, the audio performances were excellent and lent an enjoyability I would never have had if merely reading the books. The full list of performances is: * The Magician's Nephew -- Kenneth Branagh * The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe -- Michael York * The Horse and His Boy -- Alex Jennings * Prince Caspian -- Lynn Redgrave * The Voyage of the Dawn Treader -- Derek Jacobi * The Silver Chair -- Jeremy Northam * The Last Battle -- Patrick Stewart

Great story, poor CD quality

Great story, always loved listening to the wife reading to the children. Thought I would purchase the audiobook to make my drive to work easier. However, the audio on the CDs is very poor. On every CD the narrators voice comes in and goes out forcing you to continuously Adjust the volume. on every CD the narrators voice comes in and goes out forcing you to continuously adjust the volume.

Incredible talent

It's really wonderfull when an audiobook producer goes to the effort of producing an unabridged product. This box set is so great because not only are all of the Chronicles unabridged, each title is read by a different voice talent. Kenneth Branagh, Lynn Redgrave, and Patrick Stewart are only three of the great talents who show up in this series. My only complaint with this CD set is that the individual tracks are too long (4 or 5 tracks for a full CD instead of a standard 19 to 22). This makes skipping forward and backward difficult if your listening is interrupted and you want to hear something you've missed. Other than that - fantastic.

So glad I bought these for our road trips!

We have had this set for awhile now and LOVE it! It is so nice to just pop a CD in the car on long trips and watch my daughter sneak away to Narnia and her own adventure. The reading in this set was done very well, the voices change enough to know which character is talking and the expressions and inflections in the voice really sets the stage. I am so thankful that I bought this set before driving 12 hours for one trip and another 16 for another. This has kept my 6yr old as well as the rest of the family thoughly entertained.

Some of my favorites.

This set is amazing and totally worth it. I love listening to these on CD. They were a replacement for another identical set I got but they became scratched and damaged. I should have made a digital personal copy in case that happened but I did not. These are enjoyable for all ages I think. They are not dramatized so may seem slow if you are expecting a movie pace or something. They work great on long car rides or when doing chores. I like to listen to them as I paint. I love how each book is narrated by a different person.

Best readers of Narnia wver

I owned this years ago and it got damaged. You cannot imagine how wonderful it is to hear these treasured books read by these actors. Was thrilled to find it on the market!!

very excellent

This is an excellent peach of art wort reading even as a teenager I love all of c.s.Lewis's works my favorite is probably the great divorce even now I'm learning new thing from the allegorical narnia series if your a fantasy fairytale type of reader I highly suggest the chronicles of Narnia only read them in the order they were written I bought the audio book copy cause I'm more of a listener it came very fast looks exactly like the pictures lovely boxing design with original pictures around the box and on the individual CD slips very good price if narnia is your thing then I suggest buying this

Beautiful way to enjoy these classics!

Great narration of these wonderful books! Love the illustrations on the box and each CD sleeve. This would make a great gift set, but I just bought it for myself for long car trips. Great value!

Great

Great books with great narrators.

Great narration of classic books!

I bought this set for my mother when she was bed-bound during chemotherapy. She absolutely loved the narration, and said it was a great way to think about something other than what she was going through. Wish I still had them, I think they ended up with one of my siblings after mom passed away. Ah well, it's one more good reason to read these books to my kids myself. :-)

I love anything to do with C S Lewis and the ...

This is a prized possession of mine. I love anything to do with C S Lewis and the Chronicles of Narnia, and since I have many hobbies that take my visual concentration, yet leave me wishing for some audio interest, I find myself returning to these stories and this series time and time again. I have several different versions of the audio books, and each are individual and unique... The Focus on the family series paints such a lively picture in your mind with exceptional quality and audio clarity. The BBC collection is also excellently performed, complete with music and sound effects, and it was such a pleasant surprise when I stumbled upon that production....I had no idea it was ever made until about a year ago. This, however, is the quintessential Narnia audio collection, direct from the pages of C.S. Lewis, word for word, unabridged, and so respectfully compiled. I love the actors' renditions of the stories, each beautifully read, and the English accents add such an authentic flare. My 2 favorite stories...(though I love them all!)...are "The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe" (narrated by Michael York), and "The Last Battle" (narrated by Patrick Stewart). These actors truly show off the full range of vocal talents. It is such a joy to live in a day and time where so many versions of these beloved stories are available to us to relive, enjoy, and share with the next generations. My children will be introduced to the stories at a young age and will cherish them as much as I do, I have no doubt. It is a classic series, and the stories will live on forever in literature. I only wish I had been alive and able to meet CS Lewis. On a side note: Coloring in adult coloring books is one of my newest craft hobbies, and these stories are still in my list of favorites to listen to while relaxing with my artwork. I find that the combination of craft and listening to stories is exceedingly calming and inspiring. It's like having a friend who sits in your room reading to you.

Childhood wonder - Adult enjoyment

I decided to get these for long road trips. After reading the different reviews I bought this set. We live with our daughter and her family in a large house, so altogether there are 10 of us. Our grandchildren love this series (ages 9 yrs to 9 months). They have listened to them over and over. Our 18 yr son has listened to them too. The vote is that this is the best ones yet and we've had a few. C. S. Lewis can weave a story like no one else. It's cause me (56 yrs old) to go back and re-read this series. I think it's a wonderful gift for grandchildren and grandparents.

Amazing

I have a hard time listening to audiobooks. The voice usually irritates me and I would rather just read it myself. Kenneth Branagh really makes the story come to life. I really enjoyed listening to this.

AWESOME Series Audiobook on CDs at an AWESOME Price

I am hooked on The Chronicles of Narnia and wanted to own all seven books as an audiobook. This is a superb audiobook series read by famous British actors that is well worth owning. WiseChoice Books is,indeed, a wise choice because they make this marvelously read 7-book series very affordable. Buy it because we are all young enough to listen to a fairy tale and what an outstanding fairy tale!

awesome audio presentation

From the art work on the box and discs, to the accent of English speaking actors, this is a first class product. Since reviews of Lewis abound, i will simply comment on the audio set. Volume levels come across well into my home technology, the box rests distinctively on my bookshelf. There is a reminder of what CD's can hold as opposed to an MP3 file, 4 - 5 CD's per book. The only, and I mean only, thing to remark in a less that flattering way, is that when you load a CD into your PC and it comes through I-Tunes or Media Player, the titles are sometimes inaccurate - for example, in say book number XX, on CD three, the titles of the chapters on your PC screen may not be accurate, the material is right as you listen to it, and if you just popped it into a cd player, you would never know this. So for all the purposes i purchased this, i am extremely pleased. If you buy this, you will love the expressiveness of the presenters, done well, not over done. I am very glad to have this set. highly recommended.

highly recommended

We really enjoy this set and have listened to these stories many times. Each book is read by a different actor and they are very well done. My personal favorite is Alex Jennings reading "The Horse and His Boy."

Always Appreciated

This set of audio books is excellent for children AND adults. It was given as a gift to someone who had wanted this for awhile. I've read the first book of the set as a child, and so read the whole set as an adult and they were hard to put down. I recommend this to anyone who has a hard time reading, or fitting reading into a schedule - to use while driving or doing something else like waiting for a doctor's appt.

This is unabridged and read by multiple people

This is an incredible CD collection and to add to it the ART work is amazing. So worth the money.

Excellent reading of an excellent series!

Each book is unabridged and read by a different reader. This is a bit odd, as the character's voices change from book to book. However, all of the readers are excellent! This is a delightful series and should be read in the original order: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe; Prince Caspian; Voyage of the Dawn Treader; Silver Chair; Horse and his boy; Magician's Nephew (Chronilogically first but should be read later); Last Battle.

Great for long commutes.

Of course I loved the books growing up, but sadly my husband has never read them! I got these for him to listen to on his hour and a half commute to and from work. He loves it! I wish they could somehow condense the disks a bit so he wasn't always changing them. But I understand why not.

Audio CDs [Unabridged] Review

Audio CDs [Unabridged] Review. There are 7 books with several CDs in each book (31 total CDs that play for about 1 hour per CD). There are several nice illustrations on the book pages and on the CDs. The audio quality is very good. A different narrator reads each book and they are all very good at story telling. I was pleasantly surprised to find that switching narrators between books did not take away from the experience at all. I listened to the books in chronological order (book 1, book 2, etc.) and found it to be very enjoyable. Over all it's a great value for some very entertaining stories.

awesome collection

This set was for my 10 year old daughter...she liked the movies so we decided to buy those for Christmas since she like to listen to CD's when she goes to bed. At first she was hesitant, but once the story developed, she was hook on them and in a couple of days she had three books done. We listen to them in the car on long trips too. The voice of the narrator are great so far. Thank you for this beautiful collection.

Very Well done

I purchased this set to listen to on our regular 12-hour drives to see our grandkids. This was very reasonably priced for a 7-cd set and it turned out to be very well done. The reader was very pleasant to listen to and did an excellent job of reading the various parts. It kept us well entertained during the entire trip. I can't wait to get to the next cd.

Great traveling companion

Purchased for a dear friend who listens to it during her travels... she loves it

Very good buy

Excellent recording of these classic CS Lewis tales. Great price. Kids are enjoying them

Amazing Books

Didn’t realize each book is read by a different person, which is a bummer. Otherwise, I love them!

Five Stars

Great listening for the young and young at heart -- written before spectacular blood-gushing phenomena became popular.

star studded cast of voices..we are wearing this series out!

Great quality! We bought this for a road trip and now listen all the time. The star studded cast of voices is awesome....Derek Jacoby, Lynn Redgrave, Patrick Stewart... We love that it is the complete book read aloud but with dramatization for the characters.

Fit for all ages

A friend got me this as a gift and I used it while traveling to Florida to pass the time. My travel buddy fell in love with the stories. She kept on asking another friend to find the series for her. I surprised her with this Christmas present. The kids would love this series also. PS. When we had to stop while traveling, often times we would sit in the car listening to end of a chapter because the character and story plots were so entertaining.

Great narrations!

The books are obviously classics and are already so amazing but the narrators on these CDs are fantastic to listen to. My husband and I, along with all three of our kids (ages 12, 10, and 7) love listening to these on our car trips.

Superb set

This is a most excellent unabridged reading of the entire series. Each of the dramatic readers is very professional and adept at altering his or her voice for the various parts. The only voice that some of them have trouble with is Aslan's. There is a tendency to over dramatize it.

Read the hard-copy books yourself, instead.

Reading these volumes to my children was wonderful. Listening to this reader read the same volumes is painfully, sugary-sweet and boring. If you want to fall asleep, buy this. The way he pronounces Aslan is almost obscene.

Better than movies

This is a marvelous collection. The performers really make the story come alive. My family also enjoyed the artwork on the cases. The tracks are fairly long so if you have to stop and eject the cd make sure it's near the beginning of a track.

I love to listen!

These stories are fascinating and I take them with me whenever I travel on trips in a car. The hours of driving just seem to fly by as I feast on the beautifully-read works by C.S. Lewis. My grandson loves to listen to them whenever he spends the night at our house. He goes to sleep hearing these great stories.

Absolutely Beautiful Stories!

I love all of C. S. Lewis' books! Although this was meant for children, I had never heard of this series until after I was married and in my 30's. I love this because it is a tale that reminds me of Jesus and His home world! :)

Audio CD'S Chronicles of Narnia

Haven't opened yet Looking forward to listening.

It is what I wanted

It is what I was looking for

Great reading of the Narnia tales

This is the complete Narnia collection read by Kenneth Branaugh and other great English actors. An excellent way to hear the Narnia tales in order beginning with "The Magician's Nephew," which precedes "The Lion, Witch and Wardrobe." I recommend it highly.

Five Stars

Our Grandkids love this series and the readers were exceptional!

Unbeatable value!

The entire collection in one box set. Each book outs between 4 and 6 cds and has its own little sleeve within the box. Any fan of Lewis will instantly appreciate this box set. Can't beat the price for it either.

Five Stars

Item was as described and a good price.

Great story, but...

I love the story, but didn't care for the delivery of some of the readers. I gave it to a friend of mine and might try the multiple voice version down the road...

I've loved the Narnia books since I was 7 years old

I've loved the Narnia books since I was 7 years old,and am thrilled with these audio versions. Each one is done by a different, and wonderful , British actor ,and it was a thoroughly gratifying listening experience.

Narnia is wonderful

I thought that the reading interpretation was wonderful. It was clear that the readers knew the story line well enough to develop the characters as they were introduced in the stories. I did notice that that some of the volume contrasts were difficult in the car as I was driving occasionally, making it hard to hear some of the words. And Mr Lewis is fabulous in his ability to create scenes with his words.

Five Stars

Excellent narration by well known Actors straight from the books. We definitely recommend this audio series ..!

Great Travel Companion!

The audio books are my traveling companions! I am not always able to sit and read but I can move around and listen. This is a nice addition to my audio books and the price was good also.

Truly marvelous in all respects.

Review of audiobook (also available on Audible.com) (not re-enactment, but verbatim readings) –

Outstanding

Many hrs of enjoyment, love hearing our favorites in the car

Half the price

The best price I found! The shipment lacked protection, so the case was bent up, but all discs remained unharmed.

Five Stars

It's Narnia, need I say more...

Great Gift

My granddaughter and my son loved it! It was sent as a Christmas present and arrived with no problem. There are quite a lot of CDs in the set [30 or so], which was a bit of a surprise. But my granddaughter is supposed to like to listen to books, so now she has a ton to listen to.

We love this series and it is so fun to listen ...

We love this series and it is so fun to listen to add a family. The narrators are fantastic, extremely well done!

Great Find

We really enjoyed the different readers for each of the seven stories. I'll never get used to people re-arranging them into chronological order, but that is easly fixed. The only real issue I have is Patrick Stewart reading "The Last Battle". I kept thinking that Aslan was going to beam them up. Otherwise, they are great fun and especially good for long car rides.

Great Set

I have read the books and wanted these as a gift for a close friend. They worked out for her and she is enjoying them greatly. Shipping was fast and interaction with the vendor was super easy. I would recommend this to anyone. Thanks again for a great purchase.

Five Stars

Excellent

Happy Ears

The narration for these audio books is on point. It makes the commutes to school and work more enjoyable! What a joy to revisit books from my childhood.

Best Audiobook Investment I've Ever Made!

I have actually lost track of how many times I've listened to this set in the year and a half that I've had it. The word "UNABRIDGED" is very important to me, and this is truly the entire Narnia series read aloud as if in your own living room in front of a fire. I love that there is only one narrator (not a cast), because he has such a rich, expressive voice. He even does different voices for the different characters. Each audiobook comes in its own paper fold-out case so that when they're in the box, it almost looks like a set of books. Each case is decorated with the original illustrations. Words can't express how glad I am that I bought this set. You'll love it!

Love it!

I bought two sets. Sent one to my 29 year old daughter in New Mexico and one home to my 24 year old son. They both have enjoyed listening to the set. Well worth the money that I paid for it.

Box arrived smashed & split - do not purchase as a gift!

Don't buy this as a gift! It's an absolutely beautiful set, but mine arrived looking like it had been used as a football - the box was completely smashed & even split completely open in places.

love books on CD

Kids love the story and we drive a lot so it is perfect. It was a little more tattered then I expected, but CDs are perfect so far!

I have them on Audible too.

Wonderful books with excellent readers. Each reader brings something special to the stories and I never tire of hearing them.

Great Addition to my Collection

Love Narnia and the Audio has been a great addition to my collection

Five Stars

Kids enjoy listening to these stories during car rides.

Must have

Great voices and great story. Wonderful way to bring Lewis' classic to your kids that can't read yet. Great for the car.

Wonderful

We enjoy listening to these when we travel. Great! They are very interesting and we think the readers do an excellent job.

Great for summer road trips!

Our family really enjoyed this unabridged version during our summer vacation road trips. It's a great alternative to constant screen time.

travel companion

31 hours of wonderful story telling got me from California to Montana and on to Utah this summer. Good recording!

Classic C.S. Lewis

Bought these books-on-tape to listen to on long road trips and we love them! Such a great price for the full Narnia set, comes in an attractive case to hold all the CDs.

Five Stars

A must have for any Narnia fan!

I love this series.

I've loved these books since I was a child. They are realistic in that they worry about food or water, whilst being extremely entertaining. They have a solid moral grounding without being preachy.

Five Stars

Love listening to the CDs while long driving trips.

Great to listen to on long car trips with kids

Great to listen to on long car trips with kids. Also great to use if you have trouble sleeping.

Well done

This is great for long trips in the car. My 6 year old son loves to listen to it.

AMAZING BOOK COLLECTION

The first story is read by Kenneth Branagh who does an amazing job. The only one that I didn't like was book 2 due to the names that were read over and over.

A classic

A classic that I read many times as a child and I hope to read to my children. What a great way to help explain the wonder of God!

enjoyable

got these for my daughter who sometimes has extra long drive in the car and wanted something enjoyable but not overly intense. She told me she enjoys it.

Fabulous. You should acquire this set immediately.

GREAT!!! Actual unabridged book -

I love the Chronicles of Narnia. I read them all to my children growing up. I enjoyed listening to the Unabridged books as I drove somewhere or while at home. Excellent.

Unabridged - Simple - Great

Love listening over and over to these books. Unabridged. Great voice.

Loved listening to each narrator give a special presentation of each book. The stories are splendid! I was amazed that the word "ass" was used so frequently. I guess acceptable terms vary from generation to generation. The british terminology is very entertaining.

3 stars, BUT ...

The singular pentagram rating is not to my liking, but 5 stars for: The excellence of the reading by the actors; An author in command of language; Some excellent story elements; Some nice human and animal characterizations; A couple of interesting character transformations; The affective innocence of the child, Lucy; and The element of surprise in how Aslan, the lion, intervenes. 3 stars if you think you can survive intrusions of silliness and flights into theology, teleology, and various philosophical elements -- not gracefully insinuated into the story narrative -- that may disturb your appreciation for the positive elements. I am one of these but, nevertheless, give a full 5 stars to "The Horse and His Boy". 1 star if you simply cannot abide listening to silliness or to anything that irritates your cultural or philosophical sensitivities. However, I would still give the Narnia books 5 stars as an important experience if you are at all interested in knowing what all the fuss is about. Listening to the audio CDs has two advantages: the skills of the reading actors in bringing the books to life in a different way, and the fact that they proceed autonomously through unpalatable passages which might completely stop you if you were reading the books. Be warned, however, that you should not drive or operate machinery while listening, if you might be prone to animas over what you could be hearing.

We love the Narnia books, and having the cd set has been great. We listen to them on road trips plus my daughters like to fall asleep to a story at night and these are nice for that too.

Wonderful stories, I listen audiobooks to train my ability in English language. That training may be pleasant is clear.

Great Book

The family loved listening to this series while driving cross country. We hated getting out of the car at our destinations.

The Chronicles of Narnia

I have read this series and viewed it many times. All of my children and several of my grandchildren who are old enough have read it and the younger ones have seen the film versions. I highly rocommend this entire series!

Love listening to the amazing actors who read this classic.

If you enjoy reading The Chronicles of Narnia, you will enjoy listening to it even more. The actors and actresses that lend their voices to reading each book are wonderful! I would highly recommend it

Very well done. We recommend.

We listened to these CD's while we drove many miles on our recent vacation. They were wonderful.

Perfect for commuting through traffic! Wonderfully read!

It Doesn't Get Better Than This!

Between ages 10 and 14 or so, I kept track of the number of times I'd read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe on the backside of the back cover--my hash-marks total 63 readings. The book was -that- good! The rest of the series is great, too, of course, it's just that the introduction really got my attention! As good as the movie is, the book really is better, and I wholeheartedly recommend that you read the entire series.

Narnia in sound

It is a superb collection of audio disks of the entire Narnia collection. It is ideal for listening when driving or when sending children to bed at night. It might lead many listeners to read the books themselves or watch the movies.

Lewis favorite author but he finally found the Narnia

My husband has been a C..S. Lewis favorite author but he finally found the Narnia complrte

Great Audio Book

The audio book has been very enjoyable to listen to on our travels. The narration is clear and very entertaining.

Just as advertised

Listened to this while going to and from work and the only issue was the sound was somewhat soft. (I don't know if that says more about the CD's or my car)

Awesome story, brilliant read.

I love it.

Great unabridged product! A must for any lover of Narnia!

Sadly not worth 5 for labeling errors

Oh How I would love to give a 5 star review but frankly, the cd's are annoying. Yes, the production is quality, and the vocals are spot on. However, if you're playing these on a computer or Ipod, BE AWARE! the CD's are mislabeled. Each book/cd set has 4 discs; 2 or 3 will be mislabeled such that any disc, be it 2, 3 or 4 will have some other data information. So if you're putting this on an ipod type player, you will be spending time RELABELING EACH ENTRY, including the track names. If you don't mind this, then DO get the set as the set is the BEST out there. Just pitifully pathetic in the copy/labeling department.

Wonderful classics for all the family

The whole family enjoyed the books on a long road trip. Unfortunately, one CD was damaged and hence one chapter was unreadable.

Five Stars

My family love it!!! Especially for long trips.

Great Value

Great price for volume set

10/10. Would buy again.

I bought it to share with my siblings on road trips. Perfect! It was fun to be surprised by some familiar voices as well.

GREAT CD SET

THIS IS AN EXCELLENT PRODUCTION OF THE CHRONICLES. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

New item but missing a CD - poor quality control?

I am now 13 days pass the return date but we are just now listening to the last CD set and even though set came new we are missing CD2 in the Last Battle set. Children and I are very much disappointed and will now have to see if we can borrow a book just so we can read those chapters before we continue listening to the story. Very very annoying to have set which is missing a CD.

One Star

Literally a box of blank discs. So pissed.

Erratic CD playback volume

I received this 7-volume CD set after placing it on an Amazon wish list, consequently I'm not showing up as a verified purchaser. I do in fact own the item, which was purchased through Amazon. I'm fond of the books themselves and have no complaints with the writing. This review specifically addresses the CD set. Judging from "The Magician's Nephew" and "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," the dramatic readings are good, as would be expected with the sort of voice talent enlisted to do them. The problem that knocks this set down to a 3-star rating in my estimation is the erratic recording level. The playback volume varies at times from stretches of exposition that are difficult to understand in any environment with the least bit of competing background noise, to bits of dialog that suddenly blare out of a player cranked up to high output levels to compensate for that shortcoming. What we've got here is an annoying dynamic range problem. While excessive dynamic range compression is a common flaw in digital musical recordings, we certainly could have done with a great deal more here. I can only speculate at what stage of the production process this problem entered in. Perhaps it has been corrected in later editions, but I wouldn't make that assumption. On a side note, there are some aspects to Michael York's performance of TLTWATW that I found both amusing and distracting. Mr. Tumnis comes across rather more like a leprechaun than a faun, having been given a stereotypical Irish accent. That hardly prepared me for Maugrim's Scottish inflection, which instantly brought to mind Fat B*stard from the Austin Powers film series. Believe me, once you get that stuck in your head--and it's hard not to--you won't be getting it back out anytime soon. Ah, well...if anyone in the book deserves such treatment, it would probably be Maugrim.

so much more to me than just a fantasy saga

Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques I've wanted to reread the entire Chronicles of Narnia series, back to back, for a long time and just never got around to it. When I found it in audio as a boxed set, I had to have it and it gave me the excuse I needed to revisit my childhood for a little while. In The Magician's Nephew, we discover the origins of the wonderful land of Narnia and how Aslan the Lion brought it into being. Digory is a young boy tricked by his magician uncle into travelling to another world, where he must rescue his friend Polly who Uncle Andrew trapped there. Thus begins a grand new adventure for Polly and Digory, not all of which is enjoyable, as they jump through various worlds and see the birth of Narnia. Digory knows he caused most of the problems and will not quit until he fixes his mistakes. It's been so many years since I read any of this series, I can't remember if I read The Magician's Nephew before or not. What a delightful story! Here we have the prequel to one of the most beloved children's books of all time. I enjoyed my foray through worlds with Digory and Polly and especially enjoyed being there when Aslan creates Narnia. I also liked getting to see the origin of the witch and how the division of good and evil in Narnia began. In The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevency are sent to live with a reclusive professor to protect them during the war. A game of hide and seek leads to a whole new world when the children discover a wooden wardrobe that is a door to Narnia. The game grows serious when they learn they are the answer to a prophecy about two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve bringing peace to the land. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is definitely the most popular book in the series and probably every single person of the past few generations has at least heard the name. This is the story that drew me into the world of Narnia and as such, it will always hold a little corner of my heart with the memories of meeting Aslan, the centaurs, the fauns, all the talking animals, and of course the infamous Pevency children. In The Horse and His Boy, Shasta is a young orphan taken in as a baby by a fisherman and raised to work the fishing boat. When Shasta finds out his master is going to sell him to someone new, he decides to escape. While trying to figure out what to do, he discovers the horse belonging to the man wanting to buy Shasta is a talking horse from Narnia who also wants to be free. So they run away and early in their journey bump into a young girl Aravis who is also running away with Winn, her own talking horse from Narnia. Aravis and Shasta decide to journey together and find themselves in a whole mess of adventures that lead them to bump into King Edmund, Queen Susan and Queen Lucy and even the great Aslan himself. The Horse and His Boy is first and foremost a quest novel, at least in my opinion. Here we have young Shasta who escapes his dreary life to go on the adventure of a lifetime, where he finds out there is such more to him than he ever realized. Aravis too, is trying to get away from her fears and she finds the strength to do so with Shasta at her side. She also has a tendency to speak her mind with n fear of consequences, which gets her into trouble on more than one occasion. I loved the horses, who added so much personality to the story, and experience some adventures of their own. Centuries after Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy left Narnia they are unexpectedly called back from their world. There is a usurper ruling in Narnia and the true king, Prince Caspian calls for aid in defeating his uncle the phony king, so he can take his rightful place on the throne. Much has changed in Narnia since the sons of Adam and the daughters of Eve disappeared. Centuries have passed in Narnia though only a little more than a year in Earth time is gone, and Prince Caspian needs their help to bring Narnia back to the way it is meant to be. I especially liked meeting one of my favorite characters, Reepecheep, in this installment of the saga. Anotehr part of this story I loved was seeing the reactions of High King Peter and his family when they realize Narnia is nothing like they remember it. Their friends are gone and their castles in ruins, but we also get to see them overcome their shock to once more step into the roles prophesized to belong to them. They've all grown up a bit and this has quite an impact on their reactions to their beloved Narnia. Lucy and Edmund are sucked into a painting, with their cousin Eustace in tow, while visiting Eustace's family. They end up in Narnia on The Voyage of Dawn Treader, King Caspian's ship. Caspian is on a journey to the east and The End of the World in the hopes of finding several knights sent out seven years ago by Caspian's uncle, and they hope to finally reach Aslan's country. The Voyage of Dawn Treader is actually much slower paced then the majority of the books in this series and as a result seems to take an awfully long time for the adventures to begin. Eustace is a spoiled little rich boy who finds everything he believes challenged on this sea voyage. He has to rise above his faults to become the boy he is meant to be. Anotehr nice touch is we see how much Caspian has grown up since he won the throne of Narnia from his uncle. He is destined to be a great king and here we really see this side of his personality. Eustace Scrubbs (cousin to the Pevency children) has had a complete personality change after his first experience in Narnia. While trying to help a young girl, Jill, being bullied, they run off through a door in the stone wall and end up in the far east of the world, Aslan's country in Narnia. They have been summoned by Aslan to assist King Caspian in finding his long lost son, missing for 10 years. While on their journey they have four signs to follow that Aslan gave them and manage to mess up three of them. They get into scrape after scrape as they search for Prince Rillian and discover The Silver Chair. Eustace is back in Narnia, quite by accident, and he has changed so much since his last experience. But then, who wouldn't be changed after what he had to go through in the previous story? We also get to visit with Caspian one last time, in the twilight of his life as king. I have loved Caspian since we met him in his first story so while I was pleased to see he had such a wonderfully blessed life, I was a little heartbroken to see him so close to the end, in agony over the disappearance of his son. I had a hard time deciding what I thought of Rillian initially, but he grew on my after a while, especially once I understood the curse he suffered. When Shift the ape and Puzzle his donkey friend find a lion skin in the water, the ape decides it would be a great idea to dress Puzzle up in the lion skin and tell everyone Aslan has returned. When Shift gets greedy and makes a deal with the Callormens to sell the talking animals into slavery and cut down all of the dryad's trees, the real Aslan sends Eustace and Jill back to Narnia to help the king put an end to Shift's schemes with The Last Battle. Patrick Stewart narrates this one and he does a fantastic job. He had me cracking up as he brayed like a donkey and barked like a dog, among other little bits he had to perform. The Last Battle starts a little slowly, as Shift and Puzzle put their plan into motion. But once the scheme starts to work, the pace picks up as we fly down the road into battle preparations and the final war. For years I've heard about The Chronicles of Narnia as being a Christian allegory and the many references to similarities between Narnia beliefs and Christian beliefs. I also know there are many people who spend significant amounts of time studying the books for these Christian references. When I was little, all those hidden meanings were way over my head and the books were just adventure stories. Now that I'm older and wiser (or like to think I am anyhow), I can view the series with new eyes and pick up on many of the references. The allegorical nature of the series is most evident in The Magician's Nephew (the creation story) and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (the rising, crucifixion, and rising again of Jesus Christ) and The Last Battle (the Second Coming of Christ). The Voyage of Dawn Treader also struck me after I looked back on it, as reminding me of Noah and the Ark in some ways. I loved the opportunity to read Chronicles of Narnia once more and enjoyed the fact that it is now so much more to me than just a fantasy saga. © Kelley A. Hartsell, January 2008. Excellent stories!

I read the Chronicles of Narnia many times to my children: now that I'm grown, I still read them occasionally. They are so full of wisdom, and rich in imagination. It reads beautifully and well. I suppose in this politically correct age, I should mention something. As to females, the books read as though they were written today, but Lewis kind of had it in a bit for Arabs. Two of his books (The Horse and His Boy; and The Final Battle) feature an Arabic-type culture, and the Arabic-type princes does marry the English-type prince...and there are noble and ignoble folks in each group. Still, there are two places in which he uses the term "darkie": it does not mean what Americans envision, and it is a quote from an angry character--but I always paused to explain the term and why it is wrong to use it when reading to my kids. Aside from that, it is simply amazing a bachelor could write such beautiful books!

a most excellent collection

I purchased this set about 2 months ago and before that time I could find no reviews of the actual performances on the CDs. Now "Barb (WV)" has done a nice review of the performances, so I won't go into that amount of detail, although my opinion differs slightly from hers (?) in some places. Before I get to that, if you are wondering whether to listen to/purchase this collection, my answer is an unwavering YES. I have a 30-minute drive to work and I was enthralled by these recordings. It took me 5 or 6 weeks to listen to all 31 unabridged hours, but sometimes I could hardly wait to get back in the car so I could hear the next part of the story. I have read and re-read these books for many years and have parts memorized from sheer repetition, but it was a joy to listen to them read by these terrific performers. I prefer these narrated books instead of a theatrical version because the relatively narrow range in volume makes them easier to listen to in the car, without loud fluctuations to make you leap for the volume knob. I will say that I thought Michael York's narrative voice in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe rather condescending and I found it mildly annoying after a while, although still worth listening to. I thought that Lynn Redgrave's task in Prince Caspian was particularly daunting, given the many male characters she had to perform, whereas all the other books are read by men and have fewer female characters. I thought her rendition of most of the male voices was quite believable and enjoyable, and better than some of the men's attempts at female voices. Her only voice I didn't care for was Aslan. There were a couple of characters in other books for whom I didn't like the reader's rendition, for example, the Eagle in The Last Battle (sorry, Patrick Stewart). But all of the books were exceedingly well done; my two favorites were The Horse and His Boy and The Silver Chair. One editorial issue that did bother me was the text in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; I wonder why the story was changed? [if you are not familiar with the book, *note* that this will reveal a small bit of plot] Just as Lord Rhoop is introduced to Caspian after his rescue from the Dark Island, he begs "a boon" from Caspian. Here, straight from the text: "What is it?" asked Caspian. "Never to ask me, nor to let any other ask me, what I have seen during my years on the Dark Island." "An easy boon, my Lord," answered Caspian, and added with a shudder. "_Ask_ you: I should think not. I would give all my treasure _not_ to hear it." [end of quote, p. 161, Collier Books paperback edition 1970] Yet I was really confused when, instead of the expected lines, Derek Jacobi said, [here is my transcription] "What is it?" asked Caspian. "Never to bring me back there," he said. He pointed astern. They all looked, but they saw only bright blue sea, and bright blue sky. The Dark Island and the darkness had vanished forever. "Why!" cried Lord Rhoop. "You have destroyed it!" "I don't think it was us," said Lucy. [end of transcription] Where did that come from? If anyone has heard this version of the story, please let me know. It's not in any copy we own and I didn't understand why it was changed. But as for the CD collection overall, this is a terrific addition to anyone's audio library. I have to admit it is the first audio book (set) I have ever listened to, or purchased. It is well worth the price.

The Delightful Genius of C. S. Lewis!

Our family are big fans of C. S. Lewis. Over many years we've all enjoyed a great deal of his writing, fiction and non. Each of us have gradually found this or that story or book, and are never disappointed with the genius works of this wonderful man. In recent years, we have discovered the delight of each and all the Narnia stories beyond our first introduction to 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' many years ago. Excellently done audio books add ease and enjoyment to flying into these adventures between actual individual readings, and in this fabulous set, Alex Jennings, Kenneth Branagh and Jeremy Northam are our top favorite readers in this case, but all the stories are expectedly well enough done by all the actors/readers. Our generally favorite story in this series was actually 'The Horse and His Boy', which was highly entertaining, and brilliantly done by Alex Jennings.

Which Comes First, the "Witch" or the "Magician"?

Some fantasy series unfold chronologically, e.g. the Harry Potter stories. Others are told in a haphazard fashion, with the author skipping about in time over the protagonist's career, e.g. Robert Howard's original Conan stories. When Ace Books republished the Conan stories after the demise of Lancer Books, it republished them in "chronological" order and not in the order of original publication. This did not detract from the entertainment value of the series. The Chronicles of Narnia follows a linear chronology through four books, then there is a flashback ("The Horse and His Boy") and a prequel ("The Magician's Nephew") before the series is brought to a close in "The Last Battle." This presents a problem for publishers: Should the stories be republished with a linear chronology but a jumbled publication order, or a linear publication order but a jumbled chronology? There are good arguments for either order, but I prefer the the order of publication. "The Magician's Nephew" serves better to give back story to those already intrigued by the world of Narnia than it does to introduce the reader/auditor to Narnia. "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" is the perfect introduction to that world. As Lewis' stories progressed, the inevitable discontinuities and internal inconsistencies of a long series crept in. They would be less apparent if the stories were read in the order of publication. The Chronicles of Narnia CD Boxed Set chose the linear Narnian chronology/jumbled publication order approach, which the listener can remedy by simply rearranging the order of the books before listening. The original order of publication was: 1. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe 2. Prince Caspian 3. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Lewis planned on stopping the series here, but apparently it took on a life of its own) 4. The Silver Chair (Actually written after, but published before "The Horse and His Boy") 5. The Horse and his Boy 6. The Magician's Nephew 7. The Last Battle. Possibly a compromise order would be to begin with the original trilogy, then read/audit "The Magician's Nephew" and "The Horse and His Boy" before resuming the series with "The Silver Chair" and "The Last Battle." I definitely recommend auditing/reading the "Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" first, whatever you do. Production values for the CD series are excellent and the readers do a superb job. Excellent listening no matter what order you choose.

I appreciate the disagreement about the order of the books...

however, I care more about the specifics of this particular collection. The readers of each audiobook are: Michael York: 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe;' Lynn Redgrave: 'Prince Caspian;' Derek Jacobi: 'The Voyage of The Dawn Treader;' Jeremy Northam: 'The Silver Chair;' Alex Jennings: 'The Horse and His Boy;' Kenneth Branagh: 'The Magician's Nephew;' and Patrick Stewart: 'The Last Battle.' Lovely voices, each and every one. A wonderful collection.

"The pinnacle of Christian allegory..."

These books represent the pinnacle of Christian allegory, and may be enjoyed by adults as well as children. Although it is true that these stories may be "a bit precious at times, in the tradition of many British authors writing for children," the descriptions are rich and vivid, the characters are generally well-developed and the dialogue engaging. While the plot lines of the several stories are addressed at a child's level, Lewis does a marvelous job of dealing with serious and important issues in a manner that can be enjoyed and understood by both the experienced and the innocent. The series, as currently published, is ordered as C.S. Lewis intended them to be read, not in the order they were originally written. I have read the series according to the current published organization, as well as the previous way (starting with the "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe," and reading "The Horse and His Boy" and "The Magician's Nephew" immediately before "The Last Battle") and I must say that I would suggest reading the books in the order. But, to each his own, there is nothing requiring you to read the series in any order. "The Magician's Nephew" explains the establishment of Narnia, and the arrival of the White Witch and evil into that world. It discusses Aslan and his relationship to Narnia, the beginnings of humans there, as well as the source of the Wardrobe, which plays a key role in the next book. "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" introduces the four Pevensie children (Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter) and their experiences in Narnia. It explores Narnia as a winter-locked realm, which is ruled over by the evil White Witch. The book also tells of Aslan's sacrifice to save Narnia along with Edmund Pevensie, who betrayed his siblings. "The Horse and His Boy" takes place concurrently with some of the later events of "The Lion, the Witch..." and deals with characters from a land to the south of Narnia. During this book, we see the Pevensie children as adults in Narnia, and learn more about Narnia's Golden Age. As well, we learn of Aslan's constant care and attention for those who not only live in Narnia, but for all those who live without. Many hundreds of years have passed away in Narnia since the events of the events of "The Lion, the Witch..." and "The Horse and His Boy" when the book "Prince Caspian" begins; although only a short time has elapsed in our world. The Pevensie children find themselves called back to Narnia to help Caspian regain his throne and free the magical Narnian creatures. The Pevensies also discovery that they still have much to learn from these new adventures. "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" involves Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, and their bothersome cousin Eustace Scrubb. They are all whisked away to Narnia, where they travel with their friend Caspian, (now King) on his way to the end of the world, across the eastern sea. "The Silver Chair" is the first book since "The Magician's Nephew" that does not involve any of the Pevensie children. In it, Eustace returns to Narnia with a girl named Jill Pole. Although Eustace improved his attitude during "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," Jill has many lessons to learn (and so, still, does Eustace). They are brought back to Narnia to find and rescue Prince Rilian, the son of a now old and dying King Caspian. They are joined on their journey by the charming, but ever pessimistic Puddleglum, a Narnian Marshwiggle. At the conclusion of "The Last Battle" the series, and indeed the land of Narnia is brought to an end. This book involves a false Aslan, a plot to conquer Narnia, and the re-appearance of almost all of the Old friends of Narnia. It is a rich beautiful ending to a masterful series of literature. It must be noted that Lewis allegorical instruction does not disturb the tempo of the tales; the stories can be enjoyed without an understanding, or even a belief in Christianity. Likewise, he does not trivialize or infantilize difficult concepts, nor does he present them in a manner that cannot be understood by the willing and attentive child. In short, where his purpose was to tell a series of tales that instruct while they are enjoyed, he has succeeded beyond all others.

Great Buy - Doesn't come with the books though

I ordered this for my middle schooler who has a Learning Disability that prevents her from reading quickly and she has to read and test on many books a quarter to keep her grades up. The teacher said that I could suppliment with books on tape/cd. I love the Chronicles of Narnia myself and thought that she might like them too. She loves them. She would have never been able to get through one of the books by herself but she listens to them without my prompting. That is great. One thing about this purchase was that in the picture it looked to me like it came with a set of books but it does not. I am not saying that the product was misrepresented I just didn't pay close enough attention. I had a set of books at home anyway so it was no problem.

Superb Collection

I had only read two or three of the Narnia stories before picking up the audio CDs. I found that reading the stories to myself was somewhat less than captivating. The audio CDs, however, were quite the opposite. I have come to the conclusion that these stories were meant to be read out loud. This collection has a wonderful cast of narrators that present the stories perfectly.

Excellent Series

This is an imaginative and wonderful series. C.S. Lewis is really a creative author. I love it that they are Christian stories. Each one is different from the others and yet they are all great. I was so sorry to get to the last one. The readers for the series are also very good. It is very important that the reader be enthusiastic and talented. A good book can be ruined by a poor reader. I highly recommend this series for children and adults. It is a series that will be listened to over and over again. These are great in the car for long rides. ENJOY!

good for all ages

Last summer we listened to this series in the car, by borrowing them one by one from the libary. Come Christmas time we decided to buy the set. Both the adults and kids (ages 5&7) enjoyed listening. The readers do a great job, giving differant voices to the characters. We did borrow one book in the "radio style" format. We found the radio style confusing and not as pleasent to listen to.

Reviews are of the books, not the audio recordings--useless.

All the recent reviews are of the BOOKS, not the audio recordings. That's what I wanted to know about: how does Branagh do reading the books?

Awesome Audio Book Set

I am so pleased with the book set on CD's. I don't care to read very often & since I am a home health nurse I'm in my car alot. Books on CD are very entertaining for us folks on the road. I'd recommend this set to everyone! I saw the movie before I got this set which is what perked my interest in Narnia. I'm 35y/o & I loved it! I'm finishing up the last book now. I'm sad that it's ending though it's kept me entertained for over a month. (I did have a little trouble following the directions to my patients houses because I was so into the stories, oops!).

narnia rules

i got these cd's at the request of my older brother for our road-trip from chicago to oregon. it was definitely the highlight of our trek cross-country. the stories are wonderful, and each book is read by a different english actor. the only crticism my brother and i had was that the first 2 books were read extremely slowly. which is good sometimes, but we especially enjoyed the latter books that had a slightly faster pace. the stories are great for all audiences and it passed the time marvelously.

Here's which actors read which book in this set:

I couldn't find out in advance who the readers were for each book. Amazon's listing just says Kenneth Branagh. So here's the list: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, read by Michael York Prince Caspian, read by Lynn Redgrave The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, read by Derek Jacobi The Silver Chair, read by Jeremy Northam The Horse and His Boy, read by Alex Jennings The Magician's Nephew, read by Kenneth Branagh The Last Battle, read by Patrick Stewart

In response to question about Voyage of the Dawn Treader

One of the reviewers wondered why the text was changed at the end of Chapter 12, The Dark Island. I just reviewed both my editions, and they both match the text on the CD. One edition is a Puffin Book, published by Penguin Books (1977) and the other is the First Harper Trophy edition (2000). I wonder why YOUR edition is different?

whats not to like

Chronicles of Narnia - on CDs

I thoroughly enjoy listening to the books on CDs. Each title is read by a different person, and they each do a very good job. The CD set contains 51 CDs, which is kind of cumbersome (each book is on either 4 or 5 CDs), but there's probably no way around that. Each book has its own cardboard package that contains all of the CDs for that book, so it's easy to find the CD you're looking for.

Audio Narnia Superb

Harper audio w/ English narrators (e.g., Michael York, Derek Jacobi & Lynn Redgrave) of each unabridged Narnia novel involve & enthrall the listener, young & old (my grandsons, wife & I are all captivated). Superb production of Lewis' deceptively simple & timeless tales. Nearly perfect!

Classic

I have always anjoyed reading the Narnia books, and when I came across this set at the price I jumped. I really love the way all of the actors and actress read each story.

Fabulous in any order!

I purchased this CD set for my young boys to listen to in the car while we are on errons and they LOVE them. I am really enjoying them myself. The readers are the best (full of well known names). They make the stories come to life! Excellent and highly recomended!

Wonderful

I grew up watching The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. I read the whole series a few years ago. I decided to refresh my memory of these books by buying them on compact disc. It was worth every penny. I play them for my young daughter now as well. Highly recommended.

But What Did You Think About The CD Version?

Lord have mercy!! All the arguing over chronology is driving me nuts! Did anyone listen to this CD version? If so, is it any good?

Brilliant

Excellent stories read by talented artists

I'm delighted with this set.

Very wonderful! The cd's tracks are separated in chapters

Very wonderful! The cd's tracks are separated in chapters. Voices interesting and the voice of Kenneth Branagh! Excellent service to receive this box set in time.

Super coffret
