The book is beautifully illustrated to match the beautiful story. Bought for my 9 year old granddaughter.

I’ve loved this book for years (it lives in my parents “Christmas book” collection which only comes out at that time of year.) This sweet and gentle narrative never fails to bring me to tears. It is the story of a slow and beautiful return of a man from anger, pain, and hurt to gentleness, joy, and hope. A must read.

This is one of my favorite Christmas books, and I am buying it as a gift, NOT for the first time. For younger children it might work best read aloud to the family, until the children are confident readers. But they will enjoy looking at the lovely illustrations by Susan Jeffers.

Even though the outcome of the story was somewhat predictable, it was wonderful getting there page by page. The characters were believable. The illustrations were amazing, pretty and so telling. I loved this book so much, I gave one to both daughter for their young families.

Absolutely gorgeous book from the words to the illustrations! This is a beautifully written story about the meaning of life and finding joy when life has been taken away from you. The story even brought me to tears. I collect Christmas books to read to my children and this will become an all time favorite of mine. You don’t have to have lost someone to feel the raw emotion of giving love and hope during a season where those emotions are so abundant. For me, the illustrations are just as important as the words. If the pictures don’t hold up to the story it loses its finesse. I am no artist either this is just a personal expectation of mine! The pictures are beyond gorgeous and truly filled with emotion . I highly suggest this book!

The first viewing was, huh, what's this, another heart warming and fuzzy Christmas story? Well, huh, I was wrong (not that makes a hoot of difference)! Each time I watched it I became more endeared! The short book story is great, but the DVD inactment is wonderfully done! Actors, actresses, especially Mr. Toomey, Thomas, and the other kids, are great. It is a story of great personal pain, both by the young boy Thomas who lost his father, and Jonathon Toomey who had lost both his wife and daughter. The Mom, widow McDowell, even has a mature determination to fullfill her boy's dream of having a Nativity Set for Christmas. Thomas's timing with his lines is excellent. Mr. Toomey 's lines are almost cult level: "Pish-posh."; "It will be ready when its ready."; "Christmas is pish-posh". the interplay between Mr. Toomey and Thomas as Thomas gingerly tells Mr. Toomey that his carvings are not right is magnetic and suspenseful. The settings chosen in the movie are beautiful. If you like the fake Hollywood warm-fuzzy but insincere and unbelievable trash often tossed at the American public, you might think this DVD is, well, pish-posh!

I started a Christmas tradition with my kids that includes reading a new book every year on Christmas Eve. This book was my choice this year and it was a hit. I have 3 children ages 9-16 and they all loved it. My husband and I enjoyed it a well.

If the story were only average, this book would be worth it for the illustrations. But the story is beautiful, tender, and triumphant. Jonathan Toomey is a man who is still mourning the loss of his family; he has become a recluse, careless of his own welfare, only interested in the woodcarving that is his gift and his passion. Then a widow with a young boy asks him to carve a Nativity set to replace one that was lost when they moved. Her son asks to watch Jonathan carve the set because he wants to be a woodcarver, and he knows that Jonathan is the best. As he instructs Jonathan on how the animals shoudl look (because they are witnessing the greatest event in the world), Jonathan slowly breaks through the shell that has enclosed him. This is a beautiful book, and it should be in the Christmas collection of everyone who has a child.

This is one of my favorite Christmas stories. It is amazing how people can change and get a new perspective of life through others love.

My 6 yr old loves this book. It's her most requested Christmas story. Since I couldn't find a sample page prior to buying, I will add that it's longer than most children's stories. Sometimes I'll split it up over 2 nights. But it's a great story with beautiful illustrations!

I first read this book to my primary students, and, as we got to the end of the story, students were were so moved that they all began to sniffle and some began to cry. They couldn't believe the crusty Mr. Toomey had created something so exquisite, so loving, and shared his skill of wood-carving with the widow's son. The transformation was wonderful to gradually see unfold, and the true meaning of Christmas came through.

Gift... illustrations are beautiful and a nice story. Each year we give our adult sons a Christmas book so they can continue the family tradition of reading a book during the Advent an Christmas season

Can't believe I never read this before but its a real classic and the pictures are so good they keep kids enthralled even though the story is a little long.

I have always liked this story and James Earl Jones does a magnificent job of narrating.

This story is very touching and historically accurate (it's set in a time when death of spouses and children was not uncommon). At the same time, though, the message is full of hope and joy, expressed through the mutual instruction of a small boy and a hardened wookcarver. Throughout the tale there is a wonderful, gentle explanation of Christmas through a little boy's interpretation of how each creche figure should look because of its part in the Christmas miracle. My children (now 12, 12 and 7) listen to this book on CD almost once a week. THe drawings are exquisite.It's a shame the edition available today has reduced the drawings in size and distracted from them with some unnecessary borders. I've probably given this book as a gift over a dozen times -- to people both with and without children. Even in this new, less lovely edition, it is a gem of a book.

This is one of my favorite picture books ever. It really shows kids how people may have reasons for how they are but being kind will always be the right thing to do. I LOVE this story so much as did all of my children!

This book is astonishing in its ability to draw characters deeply and express excruciating pain and the incredible power of hope and healing. Very moving how the author shows what grace and patience can do for a person suffering. So much here it's difficult to describe. All of this is lifted to a level that even the most sensitive of children can be drawn to and moved by due to the skillful writing, the magnificent illustrations, and particularly through the lovely, eager, yet patient little boy who wishes to learn how to make something beautiful. Outstanding.

This is one of my favorite Christmas stories, right up there with Apple Tree Christmas, and Christmas in the Country. All three stories are gentle and beautifully told. Most of us have real sadnesses in our lives and the same was true for Jonathan Toomey. His recovery, as aided by the small boy, is an example of the gift of human kindness. In a world such as ours, kindness is a precious commodity. There is nothing of avarice, but an abundance of quiet kindness.

This wonderful arrived on time but in a ridiculous huge box.

Lovely book. Adults and kids alike will enjoy. A very clear heartwarming story that will bring out the Christmas spirit in any scrooge. Illustrations amazing as well. This reads like a classic story and utilizes real humanity , instead of a bunch of goofiness that so many children's books are these days. Extremely touching. I like the fact you can go online and livestream or download for free an audio soundtrack narrated by Darth Vader himself, James Earl Jones.

Although this is a Christmas book, it need not be. It's a simple story about kindness offered and accepted. An aging nun told me once that as she neared death she had come to understand the most important thing was kindness. I agree.

If you haven't read this, DO! A great children's Christmas book that most adults will enjoy as well. Heartwarming story with beautiful illustrations! It focuses on the main character's carving of a nativity scene, so there is a some religious elements in it, but nothing overdone (no offense to those who enjoy religious tales during the holidays, just trying to let people know in case they are not religious, or follow non Christian faiths).

I wish this book still had the beautiful cover that my copy has with Jonathon Toomey and the widows son carving.

This story has been a staple around my house for decades now. My children were little ones when I started to read it to them now they have been grown and our the house for years but I still read it each Christmas.

I never write reviews. This is the best book ever! The story is well written and well illustrated. Every page is precious. Good for anyone of any age. Wonderful miracle! I would give this book ten stars if I could.

I'm a woodcarver and stumbled across a reference to this book in a woodcarving magazine a couple of months ago. So of course I immediately ordered the book from Amazon.com. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was a lovely story with beautifully rendered illustrations. My woodcarving magazine reported that a movie is being made about from this book and Tom Berenger will play the role of the woodcarver and a Joely Richardson? will play the mother. Shane Raven, a wonderful woodcarver from England carved the actual set used in the movie and also served as the woodcarvers hands in the close-ups. Lets hope the movie people have enough good sense to stick to the book!

I bought this book three years ago and I am reading it a few times a year when I feel sad. The story is uplifting, the illustrations are great. What else would you want. This is a good read for the whole family around Christmas tree. Love it...

I have started collected books on that point to the real meaning of Christmas so I can pull them out each year for my family and future grandkids. (I can dream.) This is a delightful Christmas story with a touch of romance. I witnessed a large group of young people varying in ages from nursery to college years, held in captive silence during a reading of this book. It was then, that I decided I needed a copy for my family. When I purchased my copy, I bought an extra to give as a Christmas gift to my married son's family. I'm sure it will be enjoyed.

Such a beautiful, heart-warming story, filled with hope. I wept through a part of it as I read it to my children. Love giving it as a Christmas gift to loved ones.

The artwork in this book is only surpassed by the beautiful story. This author is a wonderful story teller and I am very appreciative of finding this book to read to children. I highly recommend this to any parent, grandparent, or teacher looking for a Christmas story with a meaningful message.

I bought the Kindle edition of this in order to get the included downloadable audio narration by James Earl Jones, but there was no link or information about how to retrieve the file. The print on the Kindle file is tiny, even when I viewed it in landscape and enlarged it. They type size isn't adjustable as it is in most Kindle books. So without the audio file, I couldn't read it at all and had to return it. If you are vision impaired, or even a little bit farsighted, forget the Kindle edition of this book. I'm sorry to give this a one star rating, because it's not the author's fault, but without the audio narration, I don't know if it's a good story.

A friend and I are often comparing notes on wonderful new and old books and stories for children (and adults), especially at Christmastime. When I saw this book, I knew it would fill the bill as a perfect gift to her to add to her wonderful collection of children's books. I was right--she loved it. I'd never heard of this story before, but, in my opinion, it should be much better known and read. It's so sweet. I'm certainly sharing it. It's perfect for reading aloud. Again, a real good experience with you folks.

I really love this story, every time I read it, it brings tears to my eyes. I really love reading stories like this around Christmas to share with children the real meaning of service and helping others. I love books and want to instill the love of reading to young children around me. Sometimes T.V. and other media get in the way of the art of reading a story or enjoying one. This story is definitely one worth sharing and it definitely warms the heart.

This has the basis of a lovely story in it which teaches children a bit about kindness, suffering, grieving... But it is incredibly repetitive. I read it once and while I enjoyed it with my 7 year old, I don't look forward to reading it frequently out loud. I don't believe that in this case, the repetition added the weight that you would want to achieve normally through repetition. I also think the ending fell flat. I think if it had less repetition and the ending was a little more complete, it would be excellent.

We were originally gifted a copy of this book and have since purchased multiple copies to gift to other people. A beautiful story of a widow and her son that get to know a woodcarver (who also happens to be a widow and lost an infant son) as he carves a new nativity set for them. The innocence of the child as he softens the bitter woodcarver is touching and the message of hope is absolutely perfect for the Christmas season. A family favorite!

Beautiful pictures and story! All my kids and i loved it!

Our family purchased this book through Amazon.com as a replacement to the one we "had loved and lost." We had read the missing volume countless times with our youngest daughter and found it to be alive with deepest meanings -- Heaven sent as it were. When we leave this mortal frame, it will be hers (her name already inscribed under ours to assure that takes place. As of this time, there is no other volume that we have thus bequeathed).

My children (now independent 26, 24, and 19) still demand this book be read to them on Christmas Eve--even if it has to be over Skype.

I'm a writer/editor that is always on the lookout for great books for my three kids (7, 11, 14). I don't even remember where I found this one, but it's my ALL TIME favorite Christmas story. It's got enough religion to keep the Christians happy, but the real message here is the miracle of the wonderful connections we can make with each other. I haven't met anyone who doesn't love this book. Do your family a favor and BUY IT NOW! It will become a tradition in your house, but be warned: you won't get through it without puddling up, and that, my friends, is a good thing. It really is. Merry Christmas to you all...

I bought a used version of this book for pretty cheap and am so glad I could include it in my countdown to Christmas collection. I love the story about how Mr. Toomey changes when others show him love. A great message, especially at Christmas time. I love how the theme of the Nativity is wound into the story - it makes it extra special for Christmas

This is definitely a Christmas read for my family.

I bought this as a read aloud for my class. I read it to my second graders over three days and they sat enthralled. They LOVED the story and so did I!

This is an excellent book. We have someone in our church wanting to do a play about this story and we have a gentleman in our church that fits the description of Jonathan Toomey to play the part. I am 52 years old and I cried when Jonathan did while he was holding the charcoal drawing of his wife and baby. Very touching story of someone's heart being softened. :)

This is a wonderful book, full of a love of Christmas, and showing the hope that it brings - all presented in a way a grade school aged child can easily understand. It arrived speedily and in wonderful condition.

This book is so wonderful. It is my favorite Christmas book. It has a great storyline. It makes me cry. I like this version much better than the newer one as this version the illustrations are the entire page.

At first my grandchildren weren’t sure about the story, but we stayed with it and in the end they understood the message and we’re enriched by it.

This book was given to my grandchildren several years ago. Since than I have ordered several to give to the college students in my Sunday School class after a read aloud to them which they always enjoy. It was a bonus to receive the accompanying CD. It is truly a beautiful Christmas favorite with me and my friends.

Good story

I know the work "Christmas" is taboo for many, but this is a great Christmas story. A man still mourning the loss of his wife learns to open up his heart to young boy curious about his carvings as well as the boy's mother who shows kindness. The carver begins to reluctantly make a nativity set, and in so doing, he realizes that he still loved by God, the boy, and the mother.

Sweet story. I had the book when my children were young, now I'm purchasing for grandchildren.

This is a very sweet story, brought me to tears as I read it to my little girl. The illustrations are also very nice.

Jonathan Toomy is a man struck by tragedy. When a widow and her son come to the door of the woodcarver he is gruff but does not turn them away. It takes many visits for the old woodcarver to start letting down his shell. all and all, this book is a wonderful story about the power of love, forgiveness, patience and appreciation.

Condition "very good" as seller promised. Good value for the price. Wonderful sweet and tender holiday story.

An amazing and sweet Christmas Story that my parents read to me as a child. I bought it this year so I could have a copy of my own!

This story is so very sweet! I bought it for my five year old and she is just at the cusp of 'getting it' because there is some subtlety in the story. It's absolutely beautiful, has an absolutely wonderful message, and makes a lovely gift!

This book is not really a story of a miracle....despite that, my kids and I really it! It is simply a story of healing and change of heart - and a gentle meditation on each of the figures in the traditional creche.

Widower wood carving man meets a widower woman and her son. They build a relationship while the woodcarver works on a Nativity for the widow and her son. They all help each other heal.

Very special. BUT only the older, earlier printings. The cheap reproductions of later printings, detract considerably from the art work- which is an essential component of this book. this was an older copy.

A meaningful, well-written and paced story. Accessible to children, but still plenty interesting (and moving) for adults. The illustrations are just what you would expect from P.J. Lynch - a perfection of warmth and realism. He is quickly becoming my favorite illustrator. A good read whether or not it's Christmas time, but especially at Christmas.

This is a fantastic story in a beautifully-illustrated book. Beware, though; you'll probably need tissues handy, and you may find yourself unable to read it to your kids without getting choked up!

Sweet story!

This is a wonderful story for the child in all of us adults and very good for grade school children. My second grade grand daughter enjoyed it .

We purchased this thinking of our grandchildren and I have read it a couple times myself. Very well written, good wholesome reading with a good positive Christmas message.

I love the sensitive, redeeming story and the rich illustrations. A good book to read to a child who has a little patience. A good way also to talk about Nativity figures.

I thought this story was delightful and the beautiful orchestra music and narration by James Earl Jones was a perfect combination. I highly recommend this audio version.
