Jim Qwilleran—along with his lovable Siamese cats Koko and Yum Yum—follows a trail of clues as elusive as a cat burglar in the night in this mystery in the New York Times bestselling series. There’s been a rash of petty thievery in Pickax—ever since banker Willard Carmichael and his flashy young wife, Danielle, moved in. But now Willard’s been killed in a mugging Down Below…or so it seems. Qwill’s suspicious, especially when Willard’s house-restoration project in Pickax falls into the hands of Danielle’s cousin—whose rich new wife then dies on her honeymoon! The clues are confounding. But with Koko’s help, Qwill intends to catch a thief—and a killer...

One of her best!

Fun and absorbing escapist fare. Braun was a master of the cozy mystery. Her books are like potato chips. You can't just read one!

Enjoyable series with likeable characters

I'm 19 books into this series, with intention to read them all. So, I obviously enjoy the writing and pace of this author. And I enjoy following the lives of the characters. I occasionally wonder if the author is a man, though, despite the female name, since there seems to be a slight sexist tilt. That's my one and only negative comment. In general, all the characters, even the transients (unique to a specific novel) are written with a keen eye towards human behavior. Qwilleran (main character), Polly (his love interest), Arch, Junior, and all the rest are likeable and easy to become invested in. I love the series and do recommend it. Each book involves a mystery to solve, usually a death and the main character deduces the twists with the aid of his precocious cat, Koko. Do not fear that this is another talking/thinking animal mystery series, though. Kojo pretty much acts like a cat. Qwilleran puts the extra meaning into his actions and it is interesting to see how that drives the action.

Cozy murder mysteries

I personally love this series of books so far. It's a murder mystery so yes they contain violence but not gory and explicit. Lighthearted. Dear, dear, dear.....I get tired of Polly and her "Qwill dear" but it's not the worse love story I've read. I'm glad to find books without explicit sexual scenes. Love Koko and Yum Yum and to see how Koko's little clues through out the story ties together at the end. If he could just talk we wouldn't have a story to read. If you want a cozy murder mystery book this is it. If you want a murder mystery with depth and details galore you might not enjoy this one.

Crime in the Winter

This is a great installment in the "The Cat Who..." series and I highly recommend it. A pair of newcomers come to Pickax and the man begins enlisting citizens to restore their old houses (for lots of money.) It's the depth of winter with snowstorms galore and non-stop action. As usual, KoKo reads the true situation long before anyone else and Quill, with his and Yum Yum's help, unmask the criminals for what they truly are. This book is truly action packed and just plain fun. Not to be missed!

Excellent condition

Delivery was super fast and the book condition was like new as advertised.

Easy read

Enjoyed reading the cat who tailed a thief

Another great mystery from the fabulous detective team of Jim Qwilleran

Another great mystery from the fabulous detective team of Jim Qwilleran, award winning journalist, and his infamous crime-solving Siamese cat, Koko. The mystery is full of surprises and suspense, but the real charm of this series is the town of Pickax - 400 miles north of everywhere - and it's lovable townsfolk who show up in every adventure to make Qwill's life so full and interesting. Combine that with Koko's exploits and Yum Yum's endearing ways, and you've got yourself a great read that invites you in and makes you part of the team.

Love the series of cat who books.

they're fun, and they're special

I'm really hooked on "The Cat Who . . . " series. I've bought ALL of them since a friend bought me four used "The Cat Who . . . " books prior to my surgery in March. Now I'm rereading them all. They're light, they're comforting, they're fun, and they're special. The author is erudite, well read, and a good companion for an intellectual who needs good company in her hour of need. I go to bed with these books (and my husband) every night.

The Cat Who Tailed A Thief...

This is Lillian Jackson Braun's 19th book in her "The Cat Who..." series. I love her books and this one introduces a great new character, Wetherby Goode, and yes, he is a weatherman. This is one of her most edge-of-your-seat suspense stories. Petty thefts are just the beginning of the mysteries. Then, a mugging turns deadly. Koko, the Siamese detective cat, is so frustrated trying to help his owner, Qwill solve these crimes, that he starts stalking sweet little Yum Yum and whacking her on the head. This is one of Mrs Braun's best "Cat Who..." books. She's really hit gold with the characters and story in this one!

Beware the Sharp Dressed Man

Strange things are happening in Pickax. Items are disappearing at an alarming rate. Then the bridge club has $2000 stolen from the charity jar. More mysteries abound including "what do Scotsmen wear under their kilts?" Koko tries to tell Qwill many times what is going on. He knocks books off the shelf and resorts to acting out what is happening with YumYum. This episode of "The Cat Who Series" is very enjoyable. I loved reading all the tall tales and how the writer incorporated that into the climax of the book. You will love this edition.

Should you trust a man with monogrammed shirts.?

This was a sad story. Not one of the more clever tales a a cat who .. poor Lynette she should have been more cautious.

Easy reading

All the "Cat" books are a lot of fun to read.

Love this Series

I love all the Cat Who Mysteries and have read them all several times. Just can't get enough of Koko, Yum Yum, Qwill, Polly, Arch Riker and all the other friends in the small town of Pickax.

The past history of the town and the way the author depicts her characters.

A Cat WHO book

Lilian Jackson Braun is an outstanding author and this is one of my most favorite book series. The book was shipped almost immediately and is like new. Although, I normally check out her books from the library in hardback when they are published, I purchase paperback copies later for my library so I can read them again later. My library now has a copy of all of Ms Braun's books thanks to Amazon.com.

Great Books for Cat Lovers

This series of Lilian Jackson Braun books are addictive. There is actually a sequence to the books and stories. The stories keep you on edge and are a great read; especially for cat people.

very good reading

I love the Cat Who books. I have read them all in paperback and now am starting to reread them on my Kindle Fire. However, I have a problem with this one. Whoever did the Kindle version did not do a good job. There are pages missing and pages repeated which makes it hard to follow the story line.

Great book.

what a mistake

Yes, it was definitely used, VERY used. Came on time, however. I was looking for an audio book and chose that category, so this must have snuck in there. Order says "book" so my mistake. You'll want to be more careful than I was when shopping for audio books (which I do all the time). Rats. Total waste of $5 (book plus shipping).

Another terrific Cat Who tale (tail?)!

Another terrific Cat Who tale (tail?)! This edition has Qwill moving out of his apple barn abode and into a condo in Indian Village for the winter months. Newcomers in Pickax, banker Willard Carmichael and his annoying younger wife, Danielle, are all the talk of local gossips ... at least she is. Danielle dresses too suggestively, has a most annoying manner of speaking, and is far too interested in getting friendly with Qwilleran. While he likes her husband, Qwill has no desire to get to know his wife. Winter storms are blowing in, an ice festival is in the offing, and Danielle's cousin, Carter Lee Jones, comes to town. CLJ is an expert at historic property restoration and has his sites set on restoring Pleasant Street ... all he asks is 20K from each homeowner, their unfettered access to their homes and contents, and the hand in marriage of one of Pleasant Street's finest citizens. Will the weather hold out for the ice festival, will Qwill and the kitties enjoy their new digs in Indian Village, will the home restoration project go off without a hitch? It's time to sit down and pick up The Car Who Tailed A Thief and find out for yourself! A terrific visit with Qwill, Koko, Yum Yum, Polly, Amanda, Arch, Mildred, Celia, Bushy, Lenny, Brodie, Fran, and all the regulars in Pickax and surrounding Moose County.

Good listening and clear

Came on time is good listening

Can not rate

Audio cassettes arrived damaged. There were no replacements available. I did not have the opportunity to enjoy this audio book.

Charming

I'm always recommending this series to my cat loving friends as well as dog lovers in hopes of turning them. Although the plot is pretty clear from the beginning, it's Braun's delightful and often eccentric characters that make her books a good read.

A fun read from one of my favorite author s

This was a good story about the UP and Jim Quilleran and his cats. It kept me guessing. I enjoyed it immensely.

Boring

Haggis Anyone?

There's something very odd going on in rural Moose County and that something is thievery. The people of this area just aren't used to this kind of behavior and normally don't bother locking up anything but the times they are a changing. At first it isn't anything big that goes missing and most people including Jim Qwilleran can't understand why anyone would steal a pair of cheap sunglasses or a bag of old clothes. Then things get serious when the local banker who is a newcomer to Pickax City is killed in a mugging. Since the murder occurred while that banker was on a business trip to a big city down below however most people just write it up to how terrible things are in big cities. The ever-alert Koko however smells a rat. As the plot thickens there is as always lots of other action in progress. Qwilleran and Polly have an argument over her cat's name, which prompts him to write a column in the local paper about the subject, which brings in a deluge of postcards with appropriate names for cats. The area is planning a huge ice festival, which is threatened by the possibility of an early thaw. Qwill and the cats are ensconced in the Indian Village apartments for the winter because their barn is so hard to heat and they end up living next to the radio weatherman whom Qwill does not care for. The weatherman, Wetherby Goode by name has been a background player in this series since the action moved to Moose County but in this installment he plays a major role and he and Qwill become fast friends. When one of the leading citizens of Pickax dies the action becomes fast and furious and Qwilleran doesn't believe it was natural causes for a minute. Koko has been trying to tell him all along but as usual he just didn't get the point. Koko ends up being so frustrated that he starts walking over to Yum Yum and bopping her on the head like it was her fault that Qwill is a little dense at times. All in all this entry into this lovable series will keep you guessing while at the same time tickling your funny bone as you read of the antics of the local residents. People of Scottish decent will particularly like this book as the normal Scottish flavor of the stories is kicked up a notch and Qwill finally makes his public debut in a kilt. In the end of course the guilty are thwarted and justice prevails but this road to justice is one of the most enjoyable journeys that you will ever take.

Lost interest half way through - too much fluff, not enough relevent story

For the last few years I have been reading different mystery authors, basically sampling across the genre. I really wanted to like this book, but didn't. This is the second book of the series that I have read - I couldn't get through either of them. Too much fluff - halfway through the book and they were still introducing new characters, how they look and dress and what kind of house they have.

Koko and Qwill

I've read one other book in this series, but it was a while ago and I can't remember which one it was. At first, I thought I was not going to like this book, but Qwill, Koko, and Yum Yum grew on me. It took me a while to figure out that the series is set in Michigan. At first, I wondered if it was England, but after a while all the up and down references reminded me of Michigan, which was later confirmed in the story. Other than the cold, Pickax sounds like a nice town--sadly, prime pickings for scams. Actually, Koko is more the crime solver of the two cats. Though I think Yum Yum did get in on directing Qwill to one of the drawers. I know Koko was trying to tell Qwill something by bopping Yum Yum on the head--I'm not quite sure I understood what it was. I did guess that there was a con going on but I didn't guess the the involvement of some of the characters. I'll count that as a half win.

This is the one!

I have ALL of the "Cat Who" books, in various formats. This is probably my favorite series. If you are enjoying this series on audio, you probably know that George Guidall is the narrator, and if you're like me, you are comfortable with his voice, and the voices he gives to each of the characters. This is my warning: There's another version of this audio book, here and on Audible, narrated by Mason Adams. I inadvertently bought it over on Audible, and was very disappointed. Obviously, another person cannot read like Mr. Guidall, who is far superior. In Mr. Adams' version, many of the characters sound the same - you can't tell Quill from Polly, etc. Do yourself a favor and get this version!

Consistently good from Braun

I thoroughly enjoyed the cats. Who wouldn't? I keep coming back to them for good entertainment. Ms. Braun is a guaranteed good read.

For Cat Lovers Everywhere

I really love the Cat Who series of books from Lilian Jackson Braun. Very fun and entertaining for those who like cozy mysteries and cats.

another great mystery story

I love her books and this one does not disappoint! A good and fast read for any old rainy day.

Winter with Qwill and the kitties

Come spend the winter holidays (Christmas through Valentine Day) in Moose County! Be there for Hixie Rice's First Annual Ice Festival, celebrate Scottish Night and Lynette's wedding! If you haven't got the faintest idea what I'm talking about you will probably not give this a five star rating but if you have visited Moose County before you'll enjoy this latest trip to 400 miles North of everywhere. The action begins with on December 23rd as Qwill is Christmas shopping. A series of petty thefts is plaguing Moose County. The crime escalates from minor nuisances to grand thefts and a respected member of a beloved County family is accused. A sudden death of a new Moose County citizen occurs during a trip 'Down Below' interrupts the more immediate concerns of the up-coming local theater production, a newspaper write-in poll of intriguing cat names, and preparations for the Ice Festival. When a popular member of an old Moose County family dies Qwill and Koko increase their efforts to get to the bottom of things. They solve all and bring the culprits to justice before the spring thaw. Of more importance to Moose County devotees is the addition of 'Wetherby Goode' the local radio weather forecaster. This long running (this is the 19th installment) series of cozies has a loyal core of fans who wouldn't dream of missing a trip to see Qwill, the semi-retired journalist who is also one of the richest men in the 'North central eastern United States' and his friends both human and feline. If you like your murders in series and cozy join the annual trek up north, but if you prefer your crimes to be challenging or graphic travel elsewhere.

ghost written?

One thing that is missing here is the love of the cats. In LJB books you always see Qwill fussing over the cats at meal times, brushing their hair, playing with them, shopping for their meals, etc. Also you usually see the cats communicating, like typing on a type writer or playing dominoes, etc. Whoever substituted for LBJ did not incorporate this into the story whatsoever. I think several of her last books were ghost written by people who don't get it. Another thing is - why rename Bootsie? His name has been Bootsie for several books already. Qwill also kind of has the wrong tone. I never saw him before as being cranky or negative. He gets along with everybody. I don't remember anybody in earlier books saying how badly constructed the Indian River condos were either.

Boring

I recently discovered the author and have read about 3/4 of her series, "The Cat Who...." The story was mainly a collection of verbatim folk tales, as told to the main character (Qwill) by various old-timers for a book he was writing to be titled "Short and Tall Tales." I found most of these tales tedious, if nothing else, for the excessive number of them. If you like folksy, improbable vignettes, you might enjoy this. Unlike the Braun books in this series I've already read, this one was (for me) boring and the plot was almost non-existent. The cats, Koko and Yum-Yum were mentioned a few times perfunctorily but really didn't play much part, except (in Braun's usual style) when Koko came up with the goods at the end. It seemed this lackluster book was published only as a money-maker for the author and publisher.

Thief tailed and caught

This is the 19th of the series. I do agree with some others that there weren't quite as many surprises in this one but it was still good. Braun's specialty (in my opinion) is character development, and as a couple of other reviewers have mentioned, the characters are written in so much detail that after reading the books we come to feel they are real people! I especially enjoyed getting to know Wetherby Goode, who has previously been something of a joke. Also I liked the cat naming information and the "tales" Qwill was collecting. I wish that the first death in the book had been investigated more, and I wish that the second death hadn't occurred at all. (That is one thing I don't like - Ms. Braun occasionally kills off a character that I have come to like!) P.S. If you haven't read any of these books, start at the beginning and read them in order. The character development will be much more evident. First is The Cat Who Could Read Backwards. P.S.2 - Please, no Sean Connery playing Qwill. Maybe Sam Elliot - but perhaps someone a little more substantial physically? Why haven't these been made into movies by now?

Koko and Qwill do it again!

It's winter in Moose County, 400 miles north of everywhere, and there's a petty pilferer around! But when a charity jar with almost $2,000 is discovered missing, the investigation really gets going. Soon some of the pilfered items show up in the work locker of one of the community's best-loved young men, leading Qwill to suspect a frame-up. But there are plenty of other twists and turns in this book, including a mugging that turns into murder, a suspicious wedding between a young gentleman and a middle-aged widow (with plenty of money), and finally another murder. Of course, Kao K'o Kung knows what is really going on long before Qwill figures it out, but then, if you've read this far in this series, you should be used to that by now.

One Of The Finest Cat Who... Books made

Lilian Jackson Braun is my favorite mystery writer. She always keeps gross and explicit things out of her books and trails the adventures of Jim Qwilleran and his two Siamese Ka'o Ko Kung (Uh, Koko for short), the male cat, and Yum Yum, the female. In this particular book, Qwill is in for many surprises and Mrs. Braun did a great job. The suspense builds until the last couple of chapter where the climax and falling action leave you too ecited to put the book down. An elaborate plan by a criminal and his kleptomaniac "wife" leave Moose County in a swirl of confusion until Qwill reveals the real intentions of the dashing decorater. A must read!

Delightful

I love it! I am a big fan of The Cat Who series and this is another in a long line of terrific books, great mysteries and cute cat antics. Koko makes me laugh and Lilian Jackson Braun has a great way of writing about him. Such as, "Even before he unlocked his front door, he knew there was a message on the answering machine. Koko was announcing the fact with yowls and body-bumps against the door panels. Given the condo's quality of construction, it was doubtful how much battering the door could take." I love these books... one of the neatest things Koko does is to boot people out of the house!

Lilian Jackson Braun scores again!

Following her whimsical and informative style, Lilian Jackson Braun weaves another clever tail(?) bringing joy and delight to all of her faithful followers. Quilleran and Koko pursue clue after clue to resolve the death of a rich and attractive woman with plenty of fun along the way Another delightful tale and a great light read.
