On December 15, 1978, the dreams of generations of American children finally came true. “You’ll believe a man can fly” read the posters and billboards for the blockbuster film Superman. The hugely popular movie cemented the role of the Super Hero as America’s most enduring archetype, and the comic book as one of the country’s most significant native art forms.

That art form, however, was already moving in a new direction. Influenced by the emergence of underground comics and shifting political tides, DC Comics’ line of comics was increasingly aimed at adults, and sold in comic book shops, rather than on newsstands. Socially relevant subjects such as racism and women’s rights had entered the mainstream, and comics weren’t just for kids anymore.

This reader-friendly sized edition explores the evolution into the Bronze Age of DC with a careful curation and expansion of material from TASCHEN's XL book, 75 Years of DC Comics, winner of the Eisner Awards, the Oscars of the comic world. Bountiful images bring the story lines, characters and creators to life, alongside an original interview with Green Lantern/Green Arrow writer Denny O’Neil.

Great coffee table book. NOT ACTUAL COMICS.

I got this for my husband as an anniversary gift (the Bronze anniversary!). I guess I should have read the description a little closer because I thought there were some reprints of actual comics included. No such luck. But the content that is here is awesome. Beautiful pictures and interesting tidbits about the writers and plots in the comics of the time. Very nice coffee table book.

Great 70s Overview

Fantastic survey of a thrilling time in sequential art when things were on the cusp of change and all things old were being made new again and the heros got the edge back that they had when first created- when super man fought wife beaters and Batman took harsher vengeance on criminals. This is the period where readers got tired of the silliness that had been in the 1950s and 1960s so some of the pulp edge was put back into the books and some of the best artists to ever work in the field were having their day.

Absolutely wonderful nostalgia and geek fest

Paul Levitz takes you through the history of DC comics. Includes great pictures of Comics from the time period. Worth a look by any comics book fan.

Great gift for DC lovers!

What a great book! High quality and handsome slip cover! Great gift choice!

Awesome book!

Amazing book! I didn't purchase the 75 years of DC book others have spoken of, so I can't compare it to that, but I can say this is a beautifully put together and meticulously researched book that any and all Bronze Age fans should get. I guess I'm biased as this was the era I started reading comics, but I enjoyed every page of this massive book. Highly recommended!

Taschen's secret history of DC comics

This is a great series put out by Taschen, it's a really large format book with copious historical information about DC's various media. It's the third of a series, the previous two being the golden and silver age of DC comics respectively. It is a great reference/coffee table book that looks great on a shelf and is endlessly informative to read. If you are into the history of any of DC's various comic or television properties there is most likely something in this book for you, I'd highly recommend getting all three!

Four Stars

A good graphic telling of DC bronze age and very interesting facts in this stage.

Five Stars

Great book. I hope we see future volumes.

Five Stars

Fabulous book!

Thouroughly interesting history of the Bronze Age of DC comics

I already had the silver age book and was keen to get this one to increase my collection. Of all the classic ages of DC comics the bronze age is by far my favourite with the work done on Batman and the teen titans particular highlights. It is great to see some of the old covers and inserts of these classic books, the artwork is first rate and the notes and text interesting. For anyone who is interested in the heritage of DC comics these books are a great coffee table addition.

Beautiful Production

Mouth watering content - as are the Golden Age and Silver age ones.

Immaculate

Fabulous art. Beautiful presentation.

A comic history book

Great reference book for every comic book fanatic.

Bronze Age gets a gold star!

This is an awesome book for anyone who has an interest in the DV creative works dating from early 70s through to mid-80s. The book features cover art as well as captures of in-story artwork while profiling the collective writers, pencillers/artists, inkers and other creative contributors. Definitely a good buy!

As amazing as the characters it depicts

An amzing book, as good as the first volume of the series. I am longing for to obtain the second volume, The Silver Age of DC.

Fetter Band :)

Imprescindible.

The big 2 hog it yet again

Too much Superman-too much Batman but apart from that a great book. I didn't buy the first 2 volumes because they were overwhelmed with info on the big 2 (yawn). This 3rd tome is the best era for comics(imo). One bad omission is there were only a few words on the Secret Society of Super villains comic and not one cover. I still rate that as the best comic of the 70's (probably because it always featured at least one of the Flash's Rogues Gallery). This was the time when all the first generation fanboys entered the industry and had some brilliant ideas about the comic characters. This book should have been twice as long . I don't rate Paul Levitz - I remember him telling me (at a uk con) there was no call for a dc archives on Adam Strange. Where do you go from there ? - head of Dc perhaps
