The instant New York Times bestseller and companion book to the PBS series. “Absolutely brilliant . . . A necessary and moving work.” —Eddie S. Glaude, Jr., author of Begin Again “Engaging. . . . In Gates’s telling, the Black church shines bright even as the nation itself moves uncertainly through the gloaming, seeking justice on earth—as it is in heaven.” —Jon Meacham, New York Times Book Review

A Great Addition to my book collection

I enjoyed the PBS mini series about the Black Church. It was so educational and evoked memories visiting down South as a child attending church services. I learned a lot about black church idealism and how it was part of shaping OUR history. Brought the book to learn more about the Black Church.

Heard about this book on release day

Heard about this book on release day. I then watched the PBS special centered on the book. Which only piqued my interest further. Can’t wait to read as the church has been and is a very significant part of Black culture. Update: After reading the book I am a little disappointed. Not at all what expected. A lot of fluff and quotes with little history. Book seems all over the place. Okay read for those reared in church or wanting to know more. The PBS special was better.

Excellent history

Excellent history of the Black Church in the Americas. Combined with the PBS Documentary it is a powerful story of the Black religious experience in America.

Beautiful!

This was a gift gift for a family member. They absolutely 💯 loved it! This is the kind of book you give and buy an additional one for yourself. Beautifully written and the photos are telling all by themselves. Tremendously inspiring.

Poorly Written and Over-hyped.

I began browsing this book in the "Epilogue," and came across these staggering examples of poor writing that glut the book: "We never missed church on Sunday mornings, we sang in the choir, but we were not saved. That is, we had not joined the church, that moment when a person stands before the congregation and answers set questions posed by the minister, effectively giving their life to Christ, which means obeying the rules set by the church for Christlike behavior" (p. 200). A few pages on, this sentence: "Not only did I not tell them then why I had done what I did, I never, ever told them" (p. 202). It's hard to believe these grammatical bloopers came from the pen of this Harvard Don. The first and the third sentences are comma splices; in addition to the second sentence containing an inexcusable pronoun reference error ("a person" (singular noun) matched with a plural pronoun "their." Did his editors make changes to his manuscript without his approval? What about the erroneous notion of churches setting the rules for "Christlike behavior"? No; the Bible does!

A must-have for all who love music and its history

After viewing the television program, I decided I needed this book! Praise to everyone involved! Cannot recommend it highly enough.

Family treasure 💖

I bought my mother this book for mother's day. I ordered one for myself.

Excellent DVD

I loved the entire 2 Disc DVD. It is very informative for everyone's viewing.

Highly appreciated by the recipient.

It was a gift to someone. Not mine.

History of the Black Church. Hallelujah🤗

I watched the documentary on PBS so I had to have the book for my library.

A CD to pass on to the next generation

Love this CD

How important the black church was and still is .

Can't wait to read it and share with my family.

Absolutely Superb!

Re: The Black Church by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. 🙌🏾❤️ I highly recommend reading of this absolutely superb book. Gates presentation for how ‘the black church’ began and evolved over many years is described in detail. It connected the dots for much of the research, etc. that I’ve done. The two-night PBS series of the same was outstanding, and the book is definitely complimentary as it pertains to providing more information in detail. #Amazon

Very good historical text.

Very good book to learn about the history of the black church in America

Excellent!

This is a book that accompanies the PBS series, but it is also great as a stand alone history of the importance of the church historically in the Black community.

Very Enlightening

After watching The Black Church, This Is Our Story,This Is Our Song on television recently, I felt that I wanted to read the book, to learn more & understand more about the black church. I received it today & I'm looking forward to reading the book.

So-So book. Author goes off on tangents.

So-So book. Author goes off on tangents. Not really informative and the author obviously had an agenda. There was about 10mins worth of good info

This information is vital

I am just beginning my study and am overwhelmed by the information included. So much to learn and understand. I am grateful for this book.

Refreshing in a world of the quick narrative

A respectful but honest review about the importance of the Black Church well written

Good

A good read and I also bought one for a friend who says they love it.

Must read

We Must Maintain Our Story

Into today’s climate, we can I’ll afford to allow the WASP community to define our relationship with God and the Church!
