The Big Book of the Blue (The Big Book Series)

My son loves the ocean and has a lot of ocean books and this one is probably my least favorite. The information is fine, and my son does enjoy looking at it, but the art is weird. When I saw it online I thought it looked fun, but it seems confusing for an informational book. For instance, on the crab page it talks about decorator crabs, but they look pretty much the same as the others. And some of the fish are just unrecognizable. What probably bothered me the most about the illustrations was the page on rays. The book distinguishes between manta rays and sting rays but they all look the same, and they all have the flaps only manta rays have. Most people seem totally satisfied, I’m sure if I didn’t have a little marine biologist I wouldn’t be so particular, but again, for an educational book it’s just not my favorite. And if you don’t care about having an educational book I’m sure you could find something more fun.

This is a zany book for parents who want to interact with their kids in a fun way. I think you will be oohing and aahing along with them; I’m pretty sure you’ll find out some new, interesting facts, too. And teachers, this is a treasure. Not only does the wonderful artwork pull you into a whole new world with each page, but you are asked questions like, “Does a seal live in the sea or on land?”, and “how do fish move?”. The answers are fascinating. Plus, author Zommer likes to play with words. The whale is “in for the krill”. Kids who are developing their reading skills will find it helpful that each 2-page category tends to have a lot of repetition, like the pages that cover seahorses, and the ones that cover snakes that live underwater, and flying fish. Kids who live near a body of water will recognize some facts and learn about others. Kids who don’t live near the water will recognize facts they’ve learned on TV and enjoy learning new ones. Yuval Zommer may have a master’s degree in illustration, but he thinks like a kid and has the same creative ideas. And for this book he consulted Dr. Barbara Taylor, a NOAH scientist. So, the facts are verified.

Bought for a 3 year old who is passionate about sea life. Very cool info, so much to learn. The only thing is that the art style kind of puts me off, with all the fish having 2 squint eyes on one side of their heads like Picasso of the sea. However, this book is requested a lot for reading time, so the kid likes it. I kind of want to get the bug one, but I am apprehensive about more bugs with 2 eyes on one side of their heads.

I accidentally put two (2) of the same book in my cart not paying attention, I should have put 10 because EVERYONE LOVES this book, it’s amazing book, I got one of each! The art is so refreshing! I had been seeing this book all over social media in homeschooling circles and I bought it on a whim. I was a little hesitant because I'm admittedly a bit cheap and I didn't want to spend this much on a book. But, I'm glad I did! It's huge in size, the illustrations are beautiful and it's full of wonderful information about marine life. My kids and I have been really enjoying it during our ocean theme homeschool unit!

I love this book!!! I’m actually terrified of ocean animals, so I love this book because I can read it and share it with my kids because the pictures are so fun! Each page is colorful and engaging, with just enough information to start conversations with your kids but also learn something. I have the Bug book as well, I will probably be adding the others soon too!

I can’t give enough praise to all the books by this author. I bought the books for myself to have on hand for visiting grandkids and sent a copy for a birthday. The illustrations are delightful and lots of interesting information for all ages.

Bought this for an ocean obsessed four year old boys birthday present. I read it myself before gifting and loved it. Large and beautiful illustrations. A lot of cool facts. Would recommend.

I was initially excited about this book. It is nicely illustrated, but to a young child who can’t read yet, every page looks the same. Unfortunately this book was not a hit.

So 5 stars absolutely love this book it's beautifully done only thing I can say negative is my daughter thought the eyes were a bit off otherwise she loves it!

this was a birthday gift for my granddaughter as she recently watched some videos with her grandfather and wanted to learn more about the ocean and the creatures that live in it. She loves to look at the pictures and reading the facts included.

My kids love these books. We buy one (from the series) at a time until we complete the set. Nice hard cover and thicker pages.

Just like his other illustrated "Big" books, such fun and beautiful illustrations and fun facts which include real world problems such as littering and climate changes. A big book for all ages! Can't wait until The Big Book of Birds comes out!!

My kids love this book! They love the entire series

This is my son’s FAVORITE book. The artwork is beautiful and interesting. Toddlers will enjoy that there’s always something new to look at and older children will enjoy the amazing ocean facts throughout!

I am a big fan of this series! My daughter loves informational books and this book is not only full of facts but also whimsical and beautiful illustrations. Any ocean loving kid would easily get lost in this book.

It should probably be stated up front that I adore the ocean so I am definitely in the target audience for this book. If you too love the big blue, or you have a child who does, then this is a book that should be on your shelf. Zommer has created several of these big, beautiful non-fiction books about different topics. I have read most of them and enjoyed them all, but this is my favorite...again though - I do love the ocean. Perhaps if you love bugs then you will really like this one, but love his book on bugs. This book is beautiful. The artwork alone makes me want to slowly page through it for days. I love the soft paintings. The text is why this one should be on your shelf though. I love how each page starts with a question that sounds very much like a question my children would ask me about that animal. I love that you can hunt for sardines on each page. I love that the facts are interesting but brief. And I love that there is just so much to read. This is a book that ocean fans and underwater animal lovers will want to read again and again. *Note ~ I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is a gorgeous over-sized non fiction book, third in its series on ocean life. This book focuses on ocean creatures big and small. Packed with information on the creatures in the sea, this is an excellent introduction for elementary kids. Back pages cover dangers to ocean life from human intervention and what we can do to keep our oceans safe and healthy. Wonderful book for gifting or for your home library!

I didn't know there was an age on this book when I purchased it. No way. Great for any collector of ocean books. Beautiful, short bits of information that don't bore anyone. I have young children in the family who will enjoy this book very much. It's on myself for them to come visit. As I keep books for around them too. A book I can't wait to read to them.

This book is so much bigger than I thought it would be. It is beautifully illustrated and my 8 year old son and 5 year old daughter love it. There is some interesting facts about the different fish that I didn’t know either! Also good for raising awareness of the dangers of plastic in the sea and making them think about the use of plastic. Will definately be buying other books by this author.

Beautiful book, highly recommend. Bought as treat for my children for the long drive to Cornwall this Summer, worked a treat. We have a few of Zommer's books, always high quality, exquisite pictures and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Would make a great birthday present as well.

I bought the book on oceans and the book of bugs for my 4 year old grandson who shows great interest in both subjects.so very well thought out to capture the mind and imagination of a small person. Not so overloaded with minutae as to boggle their brain. He loves to quote the facts we glean from the books to others ending with " l know about bugs/sea creatures". As a future Octonaut, explorer and superhero they serve him well. !

This book is a lot larger than expected and contains 60 pages of lovely illustrations with informative educational text about various aquatic sea creatures, dolphins, whales, the coral reef, rock pools, penguins etc. My 7 year old little boy adores it!

I can not get enough of 'The Big Book of...' they are all fantastic. Wonderful facts wrapped in fantastic illustrations. They are suitable for all ages and are books that you would keep coming back to.

Amazingly illustrated and both myself and the little one love using it in her home learning activities. We now have three of his books and we're going to collect the rest of them, we love them that much!

My daughter will be 4 next month and loves all things ‘ocean’ in particular sharks and whales. I ordered this book for her 4th birthday and I’m so so impressed at the language and simplicity of the facts I just know she’s going to love reciting these to us over and over again! A large book, full of beautiful illustrations and information about underwater creatures. Creates lots of discussion with my 5 year old. The pages are not overloaded with information, just short facts which is perfect for bedtime reading. Highly recommend.
