Art of War is almost certainly the most famous study of strategy ever written and has had an extraordinary influence on the history of warfare. The principles Sun-tzu expounded were utilized brilliantly by such great Asian war leaders as Mao Tse-tung, Giap, and Yamamoto. First translated two hundred years ago by a French missionary, Sun-tzu's Art of War has been credited with influencing Napoleon, the German General Staff, and even the planning for Desert Storm. Many Japanese companies make this book required reading for their key executives. And increasingly, Western businesspeople and others are turning to the Art of War for inspiration and advice on how to succeed in competitive situations of all kinds.
Unlike most editions of Sun-tzu currently available (many simply retreads of older, flawed translations), this superb translation makes use of the best available classical Chinese manuscripts, including the ancient "tomb text" version discovered by archaeologists at Linyi, China.
Ralph Sawyer, an outstanding Western scholar of ancient Chinese warfare and a successful businessman in his own right, places this classic work of strategy in its proper historical context. Sawyer supplies a portrait of Sun-tzu's era and outlines several battles of the period that may have either influenced Sun-tzu or been conducted by him. While appreciative of the philosophical richness of the Art of War, this edition stresses Sun-tzu's practical origins and presents a translation that is both accurate and accessible.

This book is a HORRIBLE VERSION!!!
I bought this book because of all the good reviews! This book is terrible and I am extremely disappointed! And I'm trying to understand what book were others writing a review! Thankfully when I went to purchase this book I discovered I could DOWNLOAD a VERSION for FREE. I downloaded the free version, but I wanted a HARDCOPY for my personal library. This book is a 375 page waste of time! It only have 66 pages of an awful translation of the 13 Chapters of Sun Tzu Art of War. Hence, its a book filled with 162 pages on the Historical Background, etc; and 138 pages and a few empty pages etc. View photo of Contents. If you want a detailed history book on Sun Tzu period of the Art of War this is the book for you. I'm so thankful for the Free Download Version translated by Lionel Giles and I just purchased another Sun Tzu Art of War by the same translator. Save yourself some Money by purchasing another Version or simply Download the Free Version because it's far better than this book!
I wanted to read Sun Tzu...not some unknown author.
It was difficult to know what Sun Tzu actually said because this book is full of commentary from some guy. I didn't realize that most of the book would be endless interpretations.
Great book. Not the short version. Informed study + the translation.
Please look up the Sawyer version before buying so you know what to expect--I saw several bad reviews and complaints about the extra historical reference information included in this book, which was the reason I bought it. This is an informed study and translation of the text. If you are looking for the short version, look elsewhere.
Love this book
This book has been around for a while and a lot of people seem to know what it is, and there’s a reason for that. It’s a great book
Full version, intro too long
The intro is half the book
Good Read
It’s a book your read. I liked it maybe you will maybe you won’t!
Centuries old still completely true.
This book is required reading by every US Army officer. It is well worth the read. The strategy applies to every intrface between one or more people in life, business or warfare. Simply genius.
Good Choice
Fantastic fare for a history buff. I just happened to hear about this book through a management student. Checking it out on amazon I decided to get it because I like "history". Well this 74 yr old went into history heaven. I learned so much about Ancient China, it's dynesties, social culture, customs, inventions, art and much more. Spending hours on my pc looking up these things I learned a lot - never to late - and enjoyed myself even more. Sun Tzu also surprised me with sayings one can find in the Book of Proverbs ! Good choice for anyone even if you are not into management that much.
Come on man
The condition of this book was severely misrepresented. I expect that a used book is going to have some wear and tear and even potentially some dog eared pages or notes/underlining in the text. What I don’t appreciate is a huge booger stuck between the pages. I don’t really know what else to say - you don’t leave a land mine like that in a book!
A little to much info
I wasn't to impress with all the extra writing. I just wanted to read the proverbs without someone analyzing everthing.

Extremely hard to understand, I will have to try again after all this COVID worry goes away
Made me a combat veteran
Bought it to maybe learn how to play Warzone better, given the title and all. It worked. It’s insightful, and has lessons applicable to real life. The whole translation section is lengthy for no good reason, but gives good story

The Art of War book
The Art of War by Sun Tzu is a classic for not only war/fighting, but it's rules and insights can be put to use throughout everyday living. Have seen many references and quotes from this excellent historic book over my 76 year lifetime......So, think it is about time that I have a copy to read, and hopefully understand........
Interesting, insightful introduction on the Chinese history of warfare
This is a very detailed thesis/exploration of the development and evolution of Chinese warfare. Expect to read about 100+ pages before you start reading the actual "Art of War" at about the middle of this book. Otherwise, the complimentary book to the other "Art of War" translated by Lionel Giles!
Any value completely lost in the poor translation
I was disappointed to find that the vast majority of this book (a little less than 1/2) was historical and interpretive content by a modern writer. Following that, I eventually found the 83 pages that was the translation of Sun Tzu's Art of War (a bit less than 1/4). The rest of the book was translation related footnotes. When I started reading the translation, I began to wonder if I was reading the incomprehensible ravings of a lunatic, the translation was that bad. I've since found much better translation by a different translator (Lionel Giles) and can now see that Sun Tzu's writings do have value but that was completely lost in this poor translation. Sadly, I consider this book a complete waste of my money and it is going in the recycle bin.
Its a very good book to read!!
I haven't finished it yet but its been good so far and I enjoy it
Interesting read
Interesting read
A good version
Sun Tzu's Art of War is extremely aged and terse, making it not the most pleasant read, but as far as versions of his book go, this is the best one I've seen. The translation seems good, and lots of extra relevant material is added to give it all a good context. If you've made up your mind to read the Art of War, but don't want something quite as crusty as the original, this is probably the version for you.
Every leader should read three books. "The Art of ...
Every leader should read three books. "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu. "The Prince" by Macheoveli. And The Holy Bible. Not in that order, of course.
Read
Great condition!
Probably should have just got the e-book
All pages were there but the book itself was falling apart. had a big number of stickers on it as well like it came from the library or something.
Classic
It is what it is. I just wanted to have a hard copy.
Perfect
Awesome
a must read
This book should be a must read for anybody in the business of competition. It really puts everything into perspective. This helps you understand that everything, everybody and daily negotiations are a part of human existance. Grest book
Great reading..
I've read this book and have highlighted the more notable sayings in it. I can see why the philosophy presented in this book is still studied today by military leaders, corporate leaders, coaches of athletic teams, etc.
An excellent read
you do not have to be a militant man or a business man the Art of War is an excellent book that provides a wealth of information for those interested in history, Admirers of the Asian culture, or simply those who wish to expand their knowledge a bit.

Informative
This book is of the teachings of War, the interesting part is that many of the modern warfare tactics used by the military today, were in use for over 100 years, this book is interesting and educational!

good book, but hard to ead
One of my favorites
Sun-tzu should be required reading for every high school student. In certain business administration courses and military officer-training courses it already is.
The art of war
The Art of War with a lot more analysis on the book then I expected. Haven't read the analysis yet but the actual art of war section was exactly what I wanted.

Too much background
I'm not sure if every version of this book is like this, but the introduction is half the book. The author goes through and explains EVERY detail. I, having never read the book, got extremely confused as to what was going on. After skipping halfway through the book I discovered the ACTUAL book. it was hidden deep inside. For a non-seasoned reader who just wanted some strategic reading this was rather annoying. For anyone who wants a background on the book this is a great selection. I have yet to finish it but it would appear the actual translation is in the book.
The Art of War
I bought this because it is considered the greatest treatise written on the art of warfare. I have just skimmed through it and have not read it cover to cover.

Sharpens the deadliest tool...the mind.
Fundamentally irreplaceable. useful tool in strategy education and tactical employment. Too deep for the weekend paint-baller and a foreign language to those who play Modern Warfare games. Some application could be used in other practices; sports, careers, ex-wives stuff like that. Good luck!

The Art of War
I chose this because O feel it is critical considering the state ob1CanBlowMe has our country in and I am a warrior/guardian who knows the value of knowledge. SunTzu has proven to be timeless.
A Disappointing Translation
This is a disappointing translation of the Art of War. The base material itself is incredibly, however Saywer's approach leaves much to be desired. The beginning gets a historical explanation of Asia during the time that the Art of War was written, however those wishing to get straight to the text may be put off by this. The actual translation by Saywer is disappointing. For those who just want to read the strategic text, read Cleary's translation.
Looking forward to reading it!
Very good price, fast shipping, book was in great condition. I have read excerpts from this book through the years and a I am excited to finally read it in its entirety.

Who remembers this stuff?
So the historical section was so long and then theres an introduction on top of that. Somewhere around page 46 I quit and realized that I was not going to remember any of this stuff about Chinese history and this dynasty or that dynasty. Personally, I am more interested in how I can use this knowledge to make critical decisions in the future. I am not a historian and knowing Chinese history extensively will not help me now. I picked back up at the actual translation of Sun Tzu and really enjoyed it. I don't see the point in adding hundreds of pages in Chinese history. I don't think I needed that information to understand Sun Tzu any more than I did. I may try another translation later with less pages.
It is great
It a great book if you like planning strategies this is the book for you. I love it I hope you feel the same way
Great book
Exactly what I was looking for. After reading some of the reviews, I was skeptical. Very easy read, had it done in an afternoon.
Amazing
Such a good book I will read again and again. It was shipped quickly and I will definitely buy more from Here
Yeahhhhh
A bit disappointed to find out that its a book on someone else's writing of the art of war, was hoping to read Sun Tzu teachings rewritten in english. Would like to swap that for another copy
The Art of War is a must read book.
The book was all I expected it to be and more. I am looking forward to reading more books from this author. Thanks
The Art of War
Very interesting and impressive reading. The tactics written in this book I have witness as a U.S. Serviceman. SUCH TEACHING AND KNOWLEDGE IN THESE WRITING CAN BE USED IN TODAYS BUSINESS WORLD OR EVERYDAY LIFE.
Art of War
Great book, it came 100% new. No markings or dog-eared pages. I was a little worried about buying a book for only $0.01 ($3.99 S&H), but I was willing to spend $4.00. Con: It did take a few days to ship but well worth the wait.

Good book.
Decent but...
The Art of War is by far THE best strategy book ever written. We live by religion. We calculate by math. We fight by The Art of War. It can be applied in any field in life. War. Business. Personal life. I say that this translation is decent because Ralph Sawyer's The Complete Art of War by Sun Tzu and Sun Pin Translated by him contains all of the text in this book about strategy in addition to Sun Pin's strategy who is wise as well. This book is more for ancient war officialnados. I want all the strategy tips and thus I prefer The Complete Art of War. To each their own.
Art of War
I got this book for a college class. I learned a lot from this centuries new old book. It's about power, how to plan for it; obtain it, and keep it. I learned a great deal about how governments and businesses work with power. Interesting book.
Great read
Love the book!
fast, fast, fast
the item arrived sooner than expected, I was enjoying the book within a couple of days. packaging and product description was perfect, thanks.
One of the best books I ever read
This is not a simple book. This is a piece of art and art of war in one place. Thanks.
Four Stars
Great book. Should be required reading in all business courses.
Love it!
Awesome book with good translation and comprehensive background/analysis
The real book
This is the real Art of War book translated. Haven't had a chance to read it yet, as is just came in today. But I got the promised book, and Amazon got it shipped right on time.
I didn't learn anything
I was really looking forward to reading this because of all the great reviews. In the beginning of the book, Sawyer gives a background of the history of China to give you some context about the translated text that you will read. I think it's great to have something as old as these texts, and I appreciate the monumental effort it must have taken to translate them. I was excited to read the translations. I thought there would be some great insights and wisdom. To me, it seemed like they were just short catchy phrases and nothing earth-shattering. I have learned more about strategy from fictional TV shows that feature battles. I kept reading, hoping that there would be some hidden wisdom that had lasted through the ages. But there was nothing that didn't seem obvious. Lines like "He who has the higher ground has the advantage." That's not a secret. You don't have to be a seasoned military officer to learn that. I finally gave up and just threw the book in the trash because I wasn't enjoying reading it.
Disapointed
This book is over 300 pages and most of the book written by the translator not by Sun Tzu. The Art of War is only about 70 pages long the rest is about history. Its not an easy read and would not recommend this book to anyone.
A few grains of truth in a lot of chaff
Today many of Sun Tzu's quotas are floating around mixed with Shakespeare and the Bible. And as with many of the quotes they are out of context and misleading. The quoter usually thinks repeating the word is some sort of magic. Most versions of this work spend more time trying to identify and qualify Sun Tzu's writings than just quoting them. I will not go through all the arguments as to who "wrote what when" or "translated what when" as you can read this for yourself. Another distraction is the attempt to show how the book was applied or not applied in recent wars. This may be interesting to someone whose intention is to apply the theories of Sun Tzu; however, it is not his writing but someone else's interpretation of its application. Now let's finally get to Sun Tzu. It is easy with hindsight and a closer look at the future to dismiss Sun Tzu as his practical tactical knowledge is of a time and place long gone. He spends a lot of time on the use of weapons and information gathering techniques of the time. This can be interesting in a historical context; otherwise, it is quite amusing. Oh yes, those grains of truth I mentioned, well they may sound like clichés but they are still viable. "Know your enemy and know yourself". Others are just practical sense and statistical outcomes that you learn in any military training. I could go through the list, but again that is why you buy the book. Now just as you decide that the book is outdated for any practical purposes today we have artillery and now stealth and precision, the reminder that "no two wars are alike" and "it is the flexibility that makes a difference" is being shown today to still be true. Even in today's wars, there is a need for good intelligence and deception. We put a lot of time and energy into Psy-Ops. Sun Tzu shows the advantage of specialized units and “crack troops.” I have spent several years in the military and business and can say this book is a nice addition to history, otherwise of very little value to today's world for war or business. The most abuse of this book is trying to use it for projects as project management is a science that that was in its infancy at the time this book was written.
Very good book on human nature.
Short book entitled ''The art of War'' written by the ancient Chinese wise man and general Sun-Tzu is one of the books in which real nature of human being was described. Author did not write his work on the ''ideal'' man, what makes his work really valuable. He presents human being as it really is, not as it should be. Nowadays many books on ''leadership'', ''strategy'' and ''tactics'' has been and are still being published. But they are only a good example of intellectual misery of modern times. There are other books on the real nature of human being and its world written by wise people from the past that should be studied in order to understand laws that rule our world better. Authors whose valuable books should be studied are as follows: Feliks Koneczny, Thomas Hobbes, Jose Ortega y Gasset, Friedrich Nietzsche, Thucydides, Tacitus, Niccolo Machiavelli, Edward Gibbon, Nicolas Gomez Davila, Francois de La Rochefoucauld, Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn, Oswald Spengler, and the ancient Chinese wise man Sun-Tzu mentioned above.
Lessons to take to heart
I'm not a military strategist, but it seems that neither are many of the people running military strategies these days. And I don't mean only American military strategy. If Western civilization wants to survive, it had better hurriedly take Sun Tzu's most poignant messages to heart--messages perhaps best translated in this classic edition. Among these are the lessons concerning one's knowledge and understanding of an enemy's philosophy and thinking. The lack attention paid by Western military, judicial, journalist, educational and law enforcement leaders to Islamic military, educational, judicial and apocalyptic ideology--and by that, I mean ideology as written by Islamic scholars and sages, not as interpreted by newspaper or academic apologists--is truly appalling. Unless leaders start to pay heed to the advice of Sun Tzu, and become genuinely familiar with Islamic law as regards non-Muslims, the current state of Western military affairs will get much worse before they get better. In other words, there will be millions more casualties--not just the thousands we've had since 1979--but millions. --Alyssa A. Lappen
Sun-Tzu on The Art of War (History and Warfare )
This book is written in the style of Machiavelli. Its contents discuss warfare in its many modes and manifestations. The presentation depicts thought in the 5th century BC. The author describes expertise on arms and fighting strategies/techniques. Tzu stands for an honor title. The work describes violent upheaval in China. The storyline provides a deeper understanding of conflict. The author describes strategies which involve deception to destroy the enemy , as well as strategies to help the weak. The author prefers a fast offensive war. The Art of War rests on some basic principles which include the following: -Moral Law -Heaven (night and day) -Commander ( has wisdom and amasses an army) -Method/Discipline (identifies the better trained personnel) The author describes strategies of baiting an enemy, the principle of "no rest from attack" and attacking the unprepared. Troops normally camp on high places facing the sun. Ground troops generally prefer higher ground to the lower valleys where they can be attacked easily. The author cautions us to take into account the high cost of war. The successful anticipation of the conflict may result in preventing the enemy from gathering or balking enemy plans. Armies need a base of operation and advanced provisions of people and supplies. Victory involves knowing when to fight. A well-trained army can neutralize a superior force. A spirited force can defeat an ill-prepared or unmotivated force. The strategy is to keep the enemy on the move and in retreat. Generally, the first to the field of battle has the strategic advantage. Rising birds and running animals are a sure sign of an oncoming army. This book is a goldmine for historians everywhere.

This is the best translation of Sun Tzu's work on the market. Sawyer is a deft scholar with the ability to approach the meaning most carefully in his text. Moreover the lenghty introduction to the text (three-quarters of the book) gives one a good description of the evolution of warfare in the the major dynasties of Classical China. Descriptions of everything from the development of the sword, chariot, and military organisation is included, all aspects of the the major military engagements described. The text should therefore appeal to both those who wish to get a general outline of Chinese military history and the context that Sun Tzu (and other writers described in the book) defines his concepts of strategy. This is a serious scholarship and there is numerous references to non-translated Chinese and Japanese first sources on the subject. Sawyer knows his stuff! There is also a full index with Chinese character translations of key concepts, events, people and places (since as any reader of Chinese script knows, there is no way the phonetic romanised spelling can convey adequate meaning). It is always good to have reference to the Chinese characters. ..... This is the translation for those who hope to take a whack at Chinese classical scholarship and military history.
The Art of War
This book is amazing. It is good for both military and business purposes. Although I think the military might be a little out-dated it still holds some great value. I think it relates better to business these days than modern warfare. It covers several topics such as waging war, planning offensives, strategic military power, terrain etc... It was a very interesting book that makes you think about both war and your own business practices. Advice such as dont attack the enemy, stress them out until they break, are all throughout the book. I learned a lot from this book. The Art of War is very good. The introduction to this book is very very long. This is the reason for the four stars instead of five. It took almost five times longer to read the introduction than the actual text. It was hard pressed to keep my attention the whole time. It was a history of warfare mostly leading up to and around the time of Sun-Tzu. Although it was pretty comprehensive it lacked the ability to keep me entertained. Ralph D. Sawyer is obviously a scholar on the subject of ancient Chinese life, but in my opinion he is not the best author. If youre interested in this type of history you might be much more interested than I was. Overall the book is incredible and a great translation. I highly recommend it.
Out Standing
The Art of War by Sun Tzu, Ralph D. Sawyer If you looking for a historical document I highly recommend this book. Sawyers interpretation is excellent with a clear understanding of Chinese culture and history. He uses numerous examples of battles that occurred in Ancient China, during Sun Tzu era. His writing is clear and easy to understand. I have read other interpretations of the "Art of War" and some areas are esoteric and confusing, not so in Sawyers version. Sawyers book is almost like having two books in one. He has a concise history of ancient Chinese military, he has his own comments (don't neglect reading the foot notes section.) besides an excellent interpretation of the text. After reading Sawyers translation, I now use it as a guide to base the accuracy of other translations. Again this is not a "business" guide adaptation of Sun Tzu's book, it is a true historic translation of Sun Tzu's Art of War. I believe Sawyer truly communicates the message Sun Tzu actually meant to convey in his book, as military guide. If you're interested in the military might of ancient China I cannot recommend this book enough.
The Art of War by Sun Tzu
When it comes to being prepared, you would be hard pressed to find more intelegence condensed in fewer pages or words. The Art of War is a must read for anyone who wants to be sucessful. You don't become sucessful by re-inventing the match, or the mouse trap. You become sucessful by immitating success; understanding the match, understanding the mouse trap, why something is sucessful and adapting those precepts to your endevors. Sun Tzu said it best; "the battle is won before the sword is drawn". That alone replaces my entire paragraph above and speaks volumes. Read this book, keep it, as I have as a reference source, and re-read it every few years. There are many useful examples of how more was accomplished with less. Read a sentence, a page, or a chapter and mull it over; you will be richer for the effort. The world belongs to the prepared mind. (Did I just quote the Boy Scouts?) No matter, I'm sure they quoted someone else. Good advice deserves repeating.
Excellent and thorough translation of Sun Tzu with a fascinating section explaining the historical context of the book
I don't need to go into a poetic toast on why this book is good, so I'll give some (hopefully) useful information that may concern anyone worried about the quality of this particular version of the book. (My rating is also based on the authorship of this version. If you JUST want the Art of War text, you can find it for free at any number of places on-line, such as Project Gutenberg: [...]). First, Sawyer is a scholar in Chinese history - he really knows his stuff so I'll say first that the translation is, at least, adequate (I know Chinese myself). It is all very objective and you won't find anything frustrating here. Second, only about 30% of the book is actually Sun Tzu's Art of War. The rest of it is additional stuff of Sawyer's authorship. BUT the stuff he adds is NOT bad. Read below for a description. You can look at the index in preview of the book, but I'll give a quick summary of what is in the book: 1) The first ~150 pages contain a summary history of China leading up to the time when the book (Sun Tzu) was written and explains the context in which the book was written (he explains the types of weapons, armor, vehicles, agriculture, political organization, etc, of the time period). 2) The ACTUAL book itself (Sun Tzu's Art of War) is about 80 or so pages. He leaves plenty on gaps between each page here and margins on the side, so you have plenty of room to write in notes if you desire. (I did myself to elucidate some of what is said in the text. Sun Tzu had a very mystical and Phynx-like, or "sagacious" as Sawyer would call it, way of writing). 3) The last major section is the end notes to the first ~250 pages. This section is about 80 or so pages long (but the text is MUCH smaller than the rest of the book and leaves very fewer blank pages or gaps. It probably amounts to 100-150 pages if made the same text size as the rest of the book). Third, I would recommend skipping the notes section (#3) until you have read The Art of War over once, because he literally puts a half-a-page-long note after each sentence and after about reading 10 pages of the actual book, you'll find that you are at note 50-something. So for 10 pages of actual text from the book, you would have read 20 pages or more in notes. It is can get very tedious. The notes themselves aren't bad though. He explains a lot of ambiguous stuff. He gives either additional historical context to what is being said, compares what is said in this book to other Chinese military books (I found this in particular hugely helpful), or gives alternative translations (typically they are significant changes) with his opinion on which one is more correct. All in all great book. You can't go wrong. You just might be annoyed with the number of end notes, but they aren't of bad quality and are generally very helpful.
THE text on Relational-Maneuver Warfare
There are two basic types of warfare: attrition and relational-maneuver. This ancient text is the ultimate text on the latter. The US Army has mostly used attrition warfare. That means you throw more soldiers and weapons at the enemy than the enemy can handle. General Grant and WW II are cases in point. On the other hand the US Marine Corps is well-known for it use of relational-maneuver warfare such as Inchon in the Korean War. In relational-maneuver warfare, one can have lesser forces and still heavily damage the enemy or even win. As Clauswitz called it--one attacks the enemy's center of gravity or attacks the enemy with more/better forces at isolated points (e.g. the Finns vs. the Germans in WWII). One of the beauties of this approach is that there are far less casualties. In Desert Storm, the Iraqi communications were taken out early--an attack on a center of gravity for command and control. The principles in Sun Tzu's "Art of War" are transferable to any conflict situation as a general case because they are so high level in nature. They can be applied to football, business negotiations, etc. Unlike some, Sun Tzu recognized that winning a war is not a matter of killing all the enemy; it's a matter of imposing a nation's political will upon another. From a certain perspective, he appears to be a realist, militarist, and humanist (he tries to minimize casualties) combined.
Classics
This is by far the best book on strategy of warfare throughout the history. There were other sound books as well, but actually most of them are based on essential information that is provided here. Having in mind, that current business field is as harsh as any other war, this is an essential read to anyone who does not want to be crushed in the first battle. And one last tip - do not read any "Art of war for managers" and etc., only rely on the original. If you are smart enough you'll make your own ideas and outcomes without any outside explanation. And you must be, if you are reading this.
A Classic
At approximately 2500 years old, Sun Tzu's treatise on the art and conduct of war and warfare is still a gem for analysts. Regarded throughout the world as one of the top books on war, the Art of War is full of nuggets of military thought. Many of the most famous aphorisms, such as "Know thy enemy, know thyself, and you will never lose in a hundred battles" are now part of everyday speech, even in the west. Sun Tzu's is a basic text for all analysts, whether in the military, politics or business worlds to read and understand.
Classic Special Warfare
Classic Special Warfare "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu and translated by Ralph Sawyer is by far the best edition of this classic tome on special warfare. Those who wish to fight and win wars study Clausewitz. Those who wish to achieve national objectives without fighting read Sun Tzu. His final chapter, written more than 2000 years ago, still provides insightful commentary on intelligence operations from a strategic and tactical viewpoint. A must read for the professional warrior.
Excellent Book, Good Translation
There are two critical things to consider when deciding to purchase a book such as the Art of War: the first being the content / author of the book and the second being the translator. This book deserves 5 stars for both. Sun Tzu's Art of War is the de facto standard on military strategy, and Sawyers translation and reference material take the work to new heights. Sawyer has a strong grasp of the material -- and discusses (through the introduction and footnotes) the times and military methods that brought about this brilliant work. The book has a number of minor typographical errors (such as lines of text that appear as the last line of one page, and the first line of the next) but overall these errors are minor annoyances at worst.
Poorly Translated
This particular version is quite poor. You’re better off finding another translation. I’ll have to keep looking. Good thing this was a library rental.
Art of War - A Must Read for Military Science Students
Sun Tzu's Art of War, written approximately twenty centuries ago, is the first recorded study of military strategy. In my opinion, the Art of War is the most famous and influential book ever written on the subject of military strategy. Its age and the fact that it is still in print and still used lends it significant credibility in the area of warfare. Sun Tzu in my opinion was a great military strategist. Quite possibly he was the best the world has ever known. It is important to note that some historians believe that Sun Tzu never actually existed, or perhaps Sun Tzu was an alias. Some historians believe that Sun Tzu may not have played a significant role as a military strategist; it is possible that he was overshadowed by more important figures. I read the edition that was translated by Ralph D. Sawyer, and I thought his work was excellent. The book flows very well and for the most part easy to read. Sawyer wisely informs the reader that each chapter should be evaluated on its own and to keep in mind how the chapters relate to one another. Those who read it may find useful information that they can relate to in their own lives, however, one must be cognizant that not all concepts would be practical. Perhaps, the results of applying certain concepts specified in this book in everyday situations could be detrimental or even disastrous, for example in a work environment. After reading his book I learned that Sun Tzu's strategies are not only useful to military strategists they can also be used by entrepreneurs, in competitive sports, or any adversarial type situation. In fact, some Japanese businessmen are required to read this book due to its wealth of information and advice on competitive situations. Since I am planning to enlist in the United States ARMY as a second lieutenant upon my graduation from college, I felt that reading the Art of War would be very beneficial background information for my career choice. This book is excellent reading for someone-such as myself-who has limited knowledge about military strategy, specifically, the theories and concepts of Sun Tzu. I read Sawyer's version for his substantial introduction and insightful historical background information as a means to gain knowledge on the ways of ancient Chinese culture, writing, time periods or dynasties, politics, economic life, and warfare. I especially enjoyed the passages on ancient warfare and its weaponry-- such as the chariot, horse and cavalry, armor and shields, and the sword; it shows how far we have advanced in warfare over the centuries. Furthermore, Sawyer analyzes battles in which Sun Tzu was thought to serve as commander, and he also provides maps of the three warring states to allow the reader visual examples. I did like the descriptions of the battles among the warring states as Sawyer reconstructed them; they were very detailed including initial troop deployment followed by second, third, and final phases of the battle. In order to better understand the ramifications of Sun Tzu's time, Sawyer provides history on the three warring states-Ch'u, Wu, and Yueh. Although, I found these particular passages quite interesting I have never enjoyed learning about history, and this book is no exception. In all honesty, I did become rather bored while reading the author's in depth account of certain aspects of Chinese history. It is my opinion that the book detailed specific events that did not contribute to the book as a whole. Additionally, some of Sun Tzu's theories and concepts were ambiguous which could result in the reader misinterpreting as well as misapplying the concepts. Moreover, Sawyer only provides an analysis on a few of Sun Tzu's concepts on warfare; therefore, it is left to the reader to interpret each concept. Sawyer even suggests that the reader obtain other books and publications to fully understand the meaning of each thought, theory, or concept provided by Sun Tzu. Before I read this book, I would have considered Sun Tzu a barbarian with an ineffective approach to warfare; however, upon completion I realized that he had repeatedly stressed the importance of human preservation, self-control, and avoidance of all military engagements if at all possible. Conversely, Sun Tzu utilized tactics and strategies that required death and destruction when necessary. I recommend this book to anyone having any interest in ancient Chinese warfare; it is worthwhile reading. The Art of War is by far the most informative military strategy book I have read to date in that the author discusses all facets of warfare for purposes of defeating the enemy. Having said this, I believe the Art of War is not a "once read." In order to understand all of Sun Tzu's concepts and theories on warfare the book must be read several times.
Mm
My sampling of the text influenced my thought Principles interest me highly yet I find the subject difficult to approach This was a highly literary text, which I found reassuring; samples were given if I remember on formative pronunciation of chinese A few quotations are fascinating, I relate with them indirectly via the work of other methodists There is a trinity I imagine amongst Lao Tsu, Sun Tzu, and Kasporov relating to Time, Elements, and the Sun
One of the most accurate translated Sun Tzu
Ralph Sawyer's rendering published in 1994 is incredibly accurate. High on readability as well. However, typographical errors are present. Though they are not damaging to the understanding of Sun Tzu, one has to wonder how much effort the author put into his work. This is apparent after numerous re-prints and all without corrections. Didn't use much of the newly discovered text in 1972, stating that the previous original was tested throughout history. Fair enough. Excellent section on Chinese weaponry. Overall, this book is to be on any serious strategist's bookshelf. Sonshi.com

Good stuff
Before buying this book, I reccommend you go to search engine like Google.com and type in "Art of War Sun Tzu." You will find the body of the famous doctrine easiliy. Read it over, and if you are still interested, then buy the book to have as a reference (in order to really learn this stuff you will have to read it repeatedly) and to learn about the historical background. It is very interesting if you are into this stuff, but if you are just looking for a good summary and general idea, go to the web.

The Art of Life? Yes!
Words and advice written so many centries ago still hold a value in our modern days. Sun Tzu's advice on better understanding your "enemy" is not just advice to be used in a War, but advice that can help you through out life. In your work life or persional life, these words will help in you better understanding why others do what they do and what you can do to succeed!
The Art of War on tape by Ralph D Sawyer
This book on tape pays for itself in creative thinking and inspiration. It gives you a fresh look at the your business information. Each time I listen I pickup something new, or create a new view of the same old information. I have already used some of the ideas in my presentations and blew the audience away. If there was ever a book that needs to be read by a salesman, this is it! Thank you Ralph D. Sawyer
Good Book

Asian military history and philosophy
A must have for anyone who thinks beyond what they see. This book contains very real situations that apply in any age and sharpens one mind in any form of combat. I recommend having this book on your personal book shelf you will come back to it more than once. Very good. A little metaphorical at times but is easily discernable for a sharp mind.
Good Read
I was able to relate this book to business as well as personal situations. A great way to learn to understand the person(s) that you are attempting to influence.
Victorious warriors win
If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle
I have no tactics,...
This is not a book for the bookworm. You have to read it at least one-thousand and one times to be able to use it in everyday applications, but it is worth the time to the serious student of what true warfare is all about.
enjoyed the read
I have always wanted a copy and now i am enjoying it. I didn't read a lot of the extra stuff just the translated orginal.
