A spiritual anthology drawn from the Greek and Russian traditions, concerned in particular with the most frequently used and best loved of all Orthodox prayers--the Jesus Prayer. Texts are taken chiefly from the letters of Bishop Theopan the Recluse, along with many other writers.

Gift from God
Gift from God. Using this technique of connecting mind with heart for inner prayer healed me of spiritual sickness I was carrying for 20 years. The simple spiritual practice of orthodox prayer is what my spirit was seeking. Simple mindfulness or Cognitive Behavioral therapy wasnt bring the healing of spiritual wholeness this brought me. I also recommend other Orthodox Psyschotherapy books ..extremely helpfu!
A Roman Catholic readers review.
I purchased "The Art of Prayer: An Orthodox Anthology" after reading some other books on Orthodox spirituality. I'm a practicing Roman Catholic and have read several books on prayer and spirituality. This is my first foray into Orthodox prayer and I must say, I'm completely impressed with the contents of this book. It suggests methods of prayer that have hitherto been unknown to me. The book centers on the concept of the "Prayer of the Heart". This method is done by focusing ones attention to the area of the heart and praying short, frequent prayers. The book goes into the benefits of the prayer of the heart and how to apply the prayer to different aspects of one's life. After reading the book and understanding the method of the Prayer of the Heart, I realized that there have been times in my own spiritual practice that unbeknownst to me, I have practiced this type of prayer. However, in reading the book and applying the directions for this type of prayer, what was once a "hit or miss" approach, has now become very focused and direct. It has enhanced my prayer life immeasurably. I recommend this book to a person of any Christian denomination. The Orthodox church has been in existence since the time of Christ and clearly there is much any person could learn from its Saints, Fathers, practices and traditions. Finally, I must mention the general appearance of the book. The book is written in an older font that is not as clear as some of the more modern fonts. Normally I would take a star or half star away from the rating due to the less than clear appearance of the book. However, the contents are so good and potentially life changing, that it still gets the full 5 stars. Buy it! And learn a new way to pray.

This book has been a friend of mine since my teenage years. A book I have lent to many people and has never been returned. Hence, the reason for my purchase once again. It is a great teacher of prayer from many holy men and women. Prayer based in Scripture and Tradition. Not a book to be read all at once, but a section at a time and ruminated on. It is a great text for prayer and good living. Read slowly and mindfully, in silence.
Great Help. Remarkable. Prayer of the Heart.
Features St. Theophan the Recluse. Great help to me. Illuminates prayer of the heart instead of the mind. It is a gift to us. Not a beginners book.
Help get a reprint for this splendid title... I was told that a call to the publisher from Amazon would help!
This extraordinary title has been carried by Amazon for many years. The current publisher Farrar,Straus& Giroux have no plans to re-issue. I was told by them that if Amazon called, they would listen: (212)-741-6900
Great Book! Cheap Paper.
This is a wonderful collection of quotations concerning the art of prayer. I've read it many times, but find myself increasingly dismayed that over the 15 or so years I've had the book the pages have yellowed and become more brittle as a result of being printed on cheap, pulp paper not worthy of the words they contain.
Read this book first!
I was advised to read this as one of the two first books after becoming Orthodox. I agree. Very good.
” This book is a wonderful and clear guide in developing an interior life
“Remembrance of God is something that God Himself grafts upon the soul. But the soul must also force itself to persevere and to toil. Work, making every effort to attain the unceasing remembrance of God. And God, seeing how fervently you desire it, will give you this constant recollection of Himself.” This book is a wonderful and clear guide in developing an interior life.

in as few words as possible i would like to say that this is like a bible for me - i have just started reading it and already i can feel the sheer power in its utter humility - the way in which the use of prayer is explained to be the essence of any method or practice is unique in it's directness - i have not read a book on Christian Prayer or any Christian book for that matter which covers simply and unswervingly, what i call, the Heart of All Religion - i have always been scared by the word 'orthodox'...until now - now i understand what the word means to me - i recommend this book over any other like it - i guarantee you will not be displeased - now for the practice... "Pray without ceasing" (5:17)
The Art of Prayer
"Let no-one think, my fellow Christians, that only priests and monks need pray without ceasing, and not laymen. No, no: every Christian without exception ought to dwell always in prayer. How can this be done? Thoughts jostle one another like swarming gnats, and emotions follow on the thoughts." (from The Art of Prayer) In this modern and restless world is it even possible to always be in prayer? The cell phone is ringing, the computer dinging, the iPod singing - is there ever even a moment of silence in which to be in prayer? If you despair of ever having a moment of peace to pray, and are discouraged that, with your busy schedule, you cannot find a moment with the Lord, take heart. This little book (just 279 pages) can teach you how to always be in the presence of God. Although at times repetitive, the points this book makes are worth repeating. Best taken in "niblets", or small bites, so as best to absorb the wisdom contained in it, it is ideal for just-before-bed reading, or to use for meditation. I highly recommend it for those who are serious about their prayer life, or who want to be.

Excellent reference book for the "prayer of the heart", the Jesus Prayer.
This is the book that Thomas Merton used as a reference to his talks to the novice Monks at the Abbey of Gethsemani while he was alive in the mid sixties. It is well worth it as a reference and source of the origins and meaning of the timeless prayer that has been said for centuries both in Orthodox Christian and other Christian belief systems.
This is the best book on prayer that I have ever read
This is the best book on prayer that I have ever read. In addition to being a helpful guide that answers the "how to" of genuine prayer, it is also a useful guide to the spiritual life in general. This is a must read for the serious Christian of every stripe.
The Art of Prayer
Prayer can be viewed from different perspectives, and there exists many explanations of what prayer is. Learning to pray from the heart and more so, with the mind within the heart is a road many have not traveled because they do not know it exists. For those of us who want to be illumined with a deeper and more richer way of "unceasing prayer", this is the book not only to read, but to take seriously if we are to learn how to open ourselves to the grace of God and attain our goal of union with God and unceasing prayer. Beginners should not be concerned for the task or obstacles which are to be overcome. It is best just to begin the journey to unceasing prayer and use this book as a constant source to return to over and over again. It has been my companion for years now. I learn about this book from a friend and borrowed it numerous times, but now purchased a copy for myself. It is a must have!
Prayer is not asking for things
I believe this book has universal appeal no matter what the faith background. What is prayer?" Standing before God with the mind in the heart." Removing your mind from the cares, worries and fears of this world and immersing it in nothing but God. This is the summation of the book. Prayer need not be verbal. Most think prayer is asking God for this and that. This book takes prayer to the its deepest level, which is communing with God in the heart, not asking for favors. The book also talks about the power of the Divine name of Jesus. This book is a tremendous aid on the spiritual path. It's my personal bible. It reminds us of our true purpose here on this earth.
Five Stars
Extraordinary guide to inner prayer.
A Treasure
A beautiful book full of amazing treasures of spiritual insight.Reading this book and books of today on prayer do not seem to be even about the same subject. This authur is communing with God not looking for "a personal relationship with Jesus"
Not just for the Orthodox
This book is surprisingly good. Brief pithy selections (1-2 pages in general) allow a busy person to dip in the book for inspiration. Anyone following a heart-centered path (Sacred Heart, Bodhisattva, Bhakti, etc.) and/or a path of continuous Interior Prayer will find much of value, clearly written and directly relevant. Complemented by something like "The Wisdom of the Desert" by Thomas Merton, it could get you ramped up to tackle the formidable Philokalia.
Food for the Journey
"It is not enough," writes Paul Evdokimov, "to say prayers. One must become, be prayer." If that is a desire you happen to share, this is the book to have, ready at hand, on your nightstand. Let one or two passages be your final utterances of the day, repeating the prayer as you enter into sleep. Kalo taxidi, phile mou!

A Roman Catholic readers review.
I purchased "The Art of Prayer: An Orthodox Anthology" after reading some other books on Orthodox spirituality. I'm a practicing Roman Catholic and have read several books on prayer and spirituality.

You Have to Have Heart
This is a classic book on how to pray with mind and heart. It is used by our church for a weekly class discussion and review. The popularity of this class is highly rated by those attending. For getting prayer from the heart in your life, this is a great beginning.

Not so much for me.

A must-read
If you want to learn how to pray or know what the Jesus prayer is, this book is for you. It doesn't have one author. It's rather a collection of writings that belong to several Orthodox saints whose spiritual life was a living proof of their communion with God. Speaking about prayer, I want to share a few points that St Isaac the Syrian considers the most important. St Isaac the Syrian says we should: * Pray with attention - so that we can have a true encounter with God. * Pray with humility - because this sort of prayer goes straight to God's ear. * Pray with affection and tears - with joy and thanksgiving, but also with true repentance and purity. * Pray with patience and ardor - `to deny oneself' is courageously to persevere in prayer. * Pray from the depths of the heart - even if we pray using `the words of another' they should be uttered as if they are our own. St. Isaac says this is especially true of the Psalms. * Pray with faith and absolute trust in God - because He knows our life. Please remember that a true prayer is not a vain repetition but a cry from the bottom of the heart, with attention, humility, reverence, and repentance. If you want to know more about the Orthodox Church and Orthodox spirituality, you may also get these books: 1 Orthodox Church by Kallistos Ware. 2 Our Thoughts Determine Our Lives: The Life and Teachings of Elder by Thaddeus of Vitovnica 3 Beginning to Pray by Anthony Bloom 4 The Path to Salvation: A Manual of Spiritual Transformation by St. Theophan the Recluse 5 On the Prayer of Jesus by Ignatius Brianchaninov 6 The Arena: Guidelines for Spiritual and Monastic Life by Ignatius Brianchaninov 7 The Search for Truth on the Path of Reason by Alexei I. Osipov God bless.
A Book in it's Own Right!
The following extract is from the introduction written by Kallistos Ware, who was a only a Hieromonk at the time. "What is prayer? What is it's essence? How can we learn to pray? What does the spirit of the Christian experience as he prays in humility of heart? Such are the questions which this book sets out to answer. It presents a picture of prayer in its various degrees, from ordinary oral prayer to unceasing prayer of the heart; above all, however, it is concerned with one particular prayer, known in the Orthodox Church as the Jesus prayer. One of the simplest of all Christian prayers, this consists in a single brief sentence, 'Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me' Ten words in English, in other languages it is even shorter - in Greek and Russian, no more than seven words. Yet around these few words many Orthodox over the centuries have built their spiritual life, and through this one prayer they have entered into the deepest mysteries of Christian knowledge. The present Anthology helps to explain how men have come to discover so much in so short a phrase." When I bought it I assumed it was simply a compilation of texts from the English translation of the Philokalia. The reason I still went ahead and bought it was that my main interest in the Philokalia comes from a desire for a deeper prayer life and thus through that to a deeper experience with God. I was surprised that this book is a book in it's own right. It was compiled by Igumen Chariton of Valamo and was published in 1936. Here is what Kallistos Ware has to say about it, again from the introduction: "On the whole, however, he does not include many extracts from the Philokalia, perhaps out of a desire to keep his anthology as simple and intelligible as possible: he may have feared that the Philokalia would have proved too difficult for many readers. He turned, therefore, to the works of Theophan and Ignatii, which contain precisely the same basic teachings as the Greek texts in the Philokalia, but present it in a form that can be more easily assimilated by Christians of the twentieth century. In Bishop Ignatii's own words (of course he is not in fact speaking of himself, but what he says applies also to himself and Theophan): 'The writings of Russian fathers are more accessible to us than those of the Greek authorities, owing to their particular clarity and simplicity of exposition, and also because they are closer to us in time'" So, I happily discovered that this book is not just a selection on prayer from the Philokalia as I thought, but a book in it's own right. I will finish with this last quote from Kallistos' introduction: "The basic definition of prayer laid down in Father Chariton's anthology is exceedingly simple. Prayer is essentially a state of standing before God. In the words of St. Dimitri of Rostov (17th century): 'Prayer is turning the mind and thoughts toward God. To pray means to stand before God with the mind, mentally to gaze unswervingly at Him and to converse with Him in reverent fear and hope.'" Simply said, but not simply practiced as the monks and fathers of the Orthodox Church testify in their lives and writings! Let us attend to this one thing: to pray unceasingly. This book is the place to start.

Pray Without Ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
Saint Paul exhorts us to "pray without ceasing" (1 Thess. 5:17). Most people pray, and some pray often, but how can we pray unceasingly? One of the best ways to accomplish this is through the Jesus Prayer. This prayer is very simple: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner." And yet it is very powerful: perhaps the best means of communion with God outside the Eucharist. First of all, it is firmly rooted in Scripture. It is based on the prayer of the blind man: "Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me," and that of the repentant Publican: "God, be merciful to me, a sinner." In addition, it invokes the Most-Holy Name of Jesus: "There is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12), and "Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things on earth, and things under the earth" (Phil. 2:9,10). The apostle also tells, "No man can say, Lord Jesus, except by the Holy Ghost" (1 Cor. 12:3). Furthermore, this prayer is awesome in its simplicity, consisting of only a dozen words. It is at once an affirmation of faith and repentance. When said in full diligence, humility and sincerity, avoiding vain repetition, the words and message of this beautiful prayer will engrain themselves in our being; as Saint Theophan the Recluse put it so beautifully, the Prayer becomes "a murmuring stream within our souls." This book is an anthology by Igumen Chariton of Valamo, based on the notes he took out of the works of Sts. Theophan, Ignatii Branchianinov, the Sayings of the Desert Fathers, and of course, the Philokalia. Herein we learn what true prayer must be, its fruits, how to overcome the sins and passions in our hearts, and achieve union with Christ. Although he dedicated most of his life to prayer, Igumen Chariton in his humility attributed nothing within this book to himself. He understood that he merely drew from the deep well that is the wisdom of God. We can be sure that within we also will find that which will be of great help in our search for fulfillment in Christ, a sure guide up the narrow path of salvation. In an age where spiritual hedonism (vis-à-vis Deepak Chopra) and the illicit search for self-gain (T.D. Jakes, "Prayer of Jabez") pervade most devotional works; we can be confident that within this book we will truly find Christian perfection.
Gems from the Valaam Monastery
When this anthology by Igumen Chariton (1872-1947) came out in 1936 the catastrophies of the coming War were already 'in the air'. Archbishop Paul of Finland was a Valaam monk and lived through these difficult times when Finland lost the war and Valaam to the Soviet. He writes in the Finnish translation of 'The Art of Prayer': "Two years after 1936 when the Art of Prayer was published Igumen Chariton published another book on the same subject with over 500 pages." This book had a subtitle called "Discussions Aroused by the Anthology of the Jesus' Prayer Between and Elder and a Priest Acting in the World". Most of the publication was destroyed during the Winter War. Let us hope that it will be published some time! Igumen Chariton's book is meant for daily reading. A guide is invaluable, but lack of one is no reason for not starting to practice the Prayer of the Heart; at some stage God will help!
Prayer matters, prayer is breath
I am a little embarrassed to write a review of this text, and I am really for most of my reviews, because the book's subject matter is very holy, and I am not. I am writing it only in the hopes that someone may stumble upon it and find grace in prayer. While I cannot do justice with my words to the reality of experience that is open for all who become friends with God through prayer, I can say that as someone who is usually in a desert of spiritual longing, this book is a fresh glass of water every time, and not because I have mastered anything, much less myself, but because the words are born out of the labor of true friends of God. Next to the Holy Bible, I am convinced that the words of the saints are most valuable. If what our Lord and His Apostles say about prayer is true, it should be as natural to us as breathing, or at least we should strive to always remember God and begin to offer our lives to Him. This book helps me do just that. And lest we forget, everyone who writes in this collection was a fervent participant in the prayer and sacraments of the Church. We are saved together. The only thing we do along is go to hell. The look inside function gives a great overview of the main contents. Other books of interest may include:
A wonderful text
This isn't actually a work all its own but a selection of quotes from various Church Fathers and a few others, and especially St. Theophan the Recluse, on the Jesus Prayer and on related topics of Orthodox spirituality. The selections are, of course, fantastic. The book is filled from cover to cover with practical advice from our holy fathers and mothers on how to pursue a more intimate relationship with our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ. I recommend it very much to those interested in either trying to understand Orthodox spirituality or who would themselves like to deepen their spiritual life.
Biblical & practical book on relationship with Jesus
This is another favorite book for me. This book is on going ever deeper with Jesus through contemplation etc. So, many of this man's words based on his experience with the Lord touch one's very soul. Biblical and practical on one's personal relationship with Jesus.
Video (Read "Visual') Context Can Be Useful for the Reader, As This is Definitely NOT a New Age Book!
Timothy Ware, who is known known under his monastic name of Kalistos Ware, collaborated on the multi-volume English translation of The Philokalia cited elsewhere. Inasmuch as The Art of Prayer is centered on Valaam monastery, readers may find the following video title very useful in imagining the context of this later title. YouTube has it available as: Valaam "Step to the Skies" part 1 of 7 (English Subtitles) Glory to Jesus Christ!
to stand with the mind in the heart before God
A very exiting book for everyone concerned with prayer. My favourite quotation: "Prayer is essentially a state of standing before God. The principal thing is to stand with the mind in the heart before God, and to go on standing before Him unceasingly day and night, until the end of life. (Teaophan) To be able to understand this, some more explanation and quotations: They find that the body is might be divided into three parts: Soul/mind: "The founding principal" -makes the man to a living creature. Spirit: Gives us the possibility to a contact with the divine reality. The "highest" quality of man since it makes it possible for us to have community with God. Our spirit is close (but not identical) to The Holy Spirit. Body: "The body is made of earth, yet it is not something dead bur alive and endowed with a living soul. Into this soul is berthed a spirit -the spirit of God, to reverence Him, to seek and taste Him, and to have its joy in Him and nothing else." (Theopan) Each of these parts has it's own quality. The body has five senses. The mind has intellect and thought. About the spirit they say: "Through the conscience, through a mystical proportion that trancedens man's ordinary rational processes". They also look closely upon the matter of the heart. The definition of the Bible, and of ascetic orthodox texts. "Primary organ of mans being, whether physical or spiritual; it is the centre of life, the determining principle of all our activities and aspiration. As such, the heart obviously includes the affection and emotion, but it also includes much else besides: it embraces in effect everything that goes to comprise what we call a 'person" In other words, the hart is much more than the centre of our emotions. "The heart governs an reigns over the whole body organism; and when grace possesses the ranges of the heart, it rules over all the members and the toughs. For there, in the heart, is the mind, and all the thoughts of the soul and its expectations; and in this way grace penetrates also all the members of the body..." (The Homilies of St. Makarios)
Learn about the Art of Prayer as you read this book
If you want answers to the questions? WHAT IS PRAYER? WHAT IS ITS ESSENCE? HOW CAN WE LEARN TO PRAY? WHAT DOES THE SPIRIT OF THE CHRISTIAN EXPERIENCE AS HE PRAYS IN HUMILITY OF HEART? pg. 51. Then read this book. I even bought a copy and gave it to a Pentacostal friend of mine, for his birthday. This book is unquestionably destined to become equal to the Philikolia.
Pray More Read Less
Christ is in our midst! Well the ultimate thing I learned from this book is that reading about prayer is not praying. Since the only way to Theosis is by way of the heart and not the brain. Through the prayers of our Holy Father St. Theophan the Recluse Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on us all!
An excellent introduction to the Philokalia
I can't add much to the previous reviews; this book is a drink of cool spring water in the desert. One comment. If you've attempted to read the Philokalia but have been put off by the demands it makes of its readers, please pick up this book. It will prepare you for the spiritual treasures found in the Philokalia.

Simplicity Itself
in as few words as possible i would like to say that this is like a bible for me - i have just started reading it and already i can feel the sheer power in its utter humility - the way in which the use of prayer is explained to be the essence of any method or practice is unique in it's directness - i have not read a book on Christian Prayer or any Christian book for that matter which covers simply and unswervingly, what i call, the Heart of All Religion - i have always been scared by the word 'orthodox'...until now - now i understand what the word means to me - i recommend this book over any other like it - i guarantee you will not be displeased - now for the practice...
Great Book on Unceasing Prayer
This is a great book for all people trying to pray without ceasing. I could not read this though cover to cover, I had to take it a little at a time. For me, it answered questions I had about the Jesus Prayer. If you do buy this book and are not familiar with the Jesus Prayer I highly reccomend first reading "The Way of the Pilgrim and the Pilgrim Continues His Way."
a favorite!
Read this years ago...a favorite!
The Art of Prayer
Being interested in true prayer and it's purpose to and through God and in a format for the layman to grasp and understand, this source has been a blessing to me. I have recommended it to other Christians and will place it in our church library. There is an extensive bibliograpy for further study. I highly recommend to Christian and non-Christian. To the Easterm Othodox " a must read"
The Art of Prayer, truly an "Art"
The Art of Prayer is beyond superlatives. It is, quite simply, the very best compendium on prayer that I have ever read. I am 72, teach in a Christian seminary, and have read many, many books on prayer. This book can transform consciousness.
An Excellent Primary Source of Orthodox Christian Spirituality.
This is one of the most concise and useful primary sources for getting to the heart of Orthodox Christian spirituality. The authors are saints and distinguished churchmen of the Eastern church who have read deeply of that major principal - though rather extensive - source , The Philokalia, and have distilled its essence in these few hundred pages. Eastern Orthodoxy is based on the writings of the early church fathers and thus represents the original Christianity whose doctrine is remarkably close to the universalist model of salvation that is common to many of the so-called 'pagan' systems of salvation including such religions as Buddhism, Jainism and Bhakti Yoga. Here salvation is a gradual process of mind-body transformation effected through techniques and practices which are very similar to those found in Asian religious traditions.
Such a good book and quick delivery
Brilliant book! Arrived much quicker than expected!
The Jesus Prayer
A wonderful anthology of Orthodox writers, focusing on the Jesus prayer, with St. Theophan the Recluse as the principle contributor. I have read it three times now!
Five Stars
prompt delivery & book is of good quality many tx
Five Stars
Very helpful for those who seek advise for prayer.
Wonderful book, TERRIBLE publishing.
The teaching in this book is invaluable. It is the type of book that one could keep for a lifetime and gain from it every time you come back to it. Unfortunately the publishing quality of this paperback edition is terrible. The paper is extremely coarse and thin in the style of a dime store novel. Not only does the printing on the back side of each page show through, even the print on the following page is visible. The print itself is very fuzzy and looks out of focus. I expect it is the ink feathering on the cheap paper. It is hard to look at let alone read. This book I would unreservedly recommend to anyone interested in pure prayer. This paperback edition however cannot be. Buyer beware. Edit. On Amazon it describes this book as published by Faber and Faber. This edition that I received is however published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Don't know if it is relevant but thought I'd add this bit of information.

The perfect book for whoever wants to learn more about the prayer of the heart, The Jesus prayer. Simple language and very inspiring. Makes you want to keep reading and reading non stop. I usually read it at the end of day before going to sleep and during the day, when I take my breaks at work. I have never looked forward for my breaks, since I can't wait to keep reading the book.
The Art of Prayer: An Orthodox Anthology....
Ein empfehlenswertes Buch, nicht nur für orthodoxe Christen, leider nur in englischer Sprache. Eine interessante und hilfreiche Auszüge aus der Philokalie. Die Wüstenväter lassen grüßen.
Good pre-Philokalia read.....
An interesting volume well worth reading as suggested elsewhere as preparation for reading the 'Philokalia' series of works. Recommended!
