Jenna Fischer's Hollywood journey began at the age of 22 when she moved to Los Angeles from her hometown of St. Louis. With a theater degree in hand, she was determined, she was confident, she was ready to work hard. So, what could go wrong?

Uh, basically everything.  The path to being a professional actor was so much more vast and competitive than she’d imagined.  It would be eight long years before she landed her iconic role on The Office, nearly a decade of frustration, struggle, rejection and doubt.

If only she’d had a handbook for the aspiring actor. Or, better yet, someone to show her the way—an established actor who could educate her about the business, manage her expectations, and reassure her in those moments of despair.

Jenna wants to be that person for you.

With amusing candor and wit, Fischer spells out the nuts and bolts of getting established in the profession, based on her own memorable and hilarious experiences.  She tells you how to get the right headshot, what to look for in representation, and the importance of joining forces with other like-minded artists and creating your own work—invaluable advice personally acquired from her many years of struggle.  She provides helpful hints on how to be gutsy and take risks, the tricks to good auditioning and callbacks, and how not to fall for certain scams (auditions in a guy’s apartment are probably not legit—or at least not for the kind of part you’re looking for!).

Her inspiring, helpful guidance feels like a trusted friend who’s made the journey, and has now returned to walk beside you, pointing out the pitfalls as you blaze your own path towards the life of a professional actor.

Best book on being an actor I've ever read

Years ago, Jenna Fischer wrote a great post on her MySpace page detailing her advice for aspiring actors. It was the best thing I'd ever read on the topic; I immediately sent it to several friends and still have a copy saved on my phone today. The roots of The Actor's Life: A Survival Guide are clearly in that original post, but this book is so much more. Part memoir, part how-to-guide, Jenna walks you through her journey from Midwest dreamer to working actor, not shying away from the ups-and-(many) downs in the life of an aspiring artist. She's honest about her struggles and mistakes, as well as the smart decisions she made that helped her take advantage of the career opportunities that eventually appeared. Her advice for new actors starting out today was clearly well-researched and not just based on her own experiences trying to make it before she was cast as Pam in The Office. Besides Jenna herself, the stars are Molly Shannon and Topher Grace, both of whom went out of their way to encourage and inspire her in the early years of her career when she needed it the most. That same encouragement and inspiration is what Jenna has given everyone who reads this book, but she goes beyond that with real, actionable advice that makes the dream of becoming an actor actually feel possible. That's the true gift of The Actor's Life: A Survival Guide. And I couldn't recommend it more highly.

A great read for anyone who enjoys Jenna's work.

Jenna is a "what you see is what you get" person. Very uncommon in Hollywood. I'm not an aspiring actor (actually retired cop) but she is true and honest in anything I've seen related to her. As an addicted "Office Fan" I believe she could write "An Office Memoir" and it would be an immediate best seller. This was such a fun read and I was exhausted after seeing what an actor has to go through just to get to where you can make a living. I'm glad she made it and am thankful to her and the rest of The Office crew for all the laughs that I continue to enjoy over and over and over.....again. True Office fans know what I mean.

The book I've been waiting for!

Over 6 years ago, I made the trek across country to Los Angeles where, like Jenna, I was certain I'd be an immediate success! Unlike Jenna, I had the helpful words of someone who'd already been there. Someone who had already experienced the high and lows of show business, and was willing to share their arduous journey. That person was actually Jenna. Right before relocating, I was emailed a blog she wrote that served as a friendly guide on what to expect after the "big move." I used it as a constant reminder to not give up. Currently, I'm enrolled in Robert D'Avanzo's on camera acting class, thanks to Jenna's glowing recommendation. For me, the timing of this book couldn't be more serendipitous. Not only does she take you through every single detail on how to pursue an acting career, but she also shares stories from her past that make TAL so engaging that it's impossible to put down. I read the whole book in two sittings. Her voice is funny, charming, uplifting, and kind. There's also many cringe worthy stories, which helped me find peace with some of my, ahem... not so great moments in the industry. Ha! This is a very important book. Especially, when you have doubts about where you fit in this crazy world, and whether you want to continue on. Most actors have been there. Even Jenna.

I've read dozens of books about acting and the "biz." Jenna's book is informative, practical and an easy read. I love her honesty and that she tells her story--warts and all. I've been a casting director for 35 years so I know that her info is right on. (By way, I love the kudos she gives to her casting mentor, Allison Jones.) One of the most important things she shares for new arrivals in LA: join a theatre company, an improv group, an acting class. Do ANYTHING you need to do to find your tribe; otherwise, you'll spend your first years in LA lonely and crazy while you're waiting for that phone to ring.

If you’re an actor, you need this book!

Thank you, Jenna Fischer! I truly loved this book. It speaks the truth about this business from a wonderful perspective of a working actor. The real struggles. The victories that are unseen to others outside our world. I loved this book because 1) it’s entertaining as hell. Funny & honest. Jenna is likable & lovely on every page. This is not a boring how to break into acting book, nor is it some celebrity dropping names & espousing how great it all is. This real & relatable. 2) it’s a guide book. All actors have their own journey & path to follow. No 2 are exactly alike. There are no exact steps & timelines to success. But guidance is key along the way. That’s what Jenna provides. Guidance along this crazy chosen path. Letting us in on the her personal struggles, experiences, & wins along the way. As an actor, I have many days that I struggle with my career. I feel like I’ve been doing it forever but not getting anywhere. And then there are days I feel like I’m doing ok. Jenna puts a lot of things into perspective. Also it gives me drive in this new year. So if you’re a total newbie trying to break in or a veteran of the biz making headway, I know this book will be a wonderful resource for you.

Not what I expected- but still enjoyed it!

So I saw this on sale on Amazon and slightly glanced at the title. I thought it was going to be a funny memoir not an actor’s guide to survive acting. Whoops! I contemplated not finishing it but found it kinda fun to read and learn about the ins and outs of acting. Because I live in LA and in my 20’s worked in entertainment (but not as an actor) it was fun to read about what a lot of my friends had tried doing or are still doing! Also, given my experience and that I live in LA a lot of people not from here will ask me acting advice. Why? I am not sure, but they think that because I used to work in entertainment and live in LA I must know something about it. So I kept reading it to see what Jenna would tell them. I laughed out loud in some of the sections and found this book to be full of great advice to anyone wanting to act (or write) in Los Angeles or NYC. Basically if you want to be an actor please read this book. I should probably buy a few copies of this to give out to people when they ask me how to break in to acting... as if I should know just by living in LA. Lol! My only criticism is that this book doesn’t give advice to those who should quit. Jenna came close when she talked about her friend who was managing a coffee shop ... but maybe an addendum in later copies would be helpful. You know- You should quit trying to be an actor if you’re a hermit and never audition. Or you’re a temp but don’t ever audition... or you stopped auditioning because you now manage a coffee shop. Or if you don’t follow the advice here in this book you should rethink your job choice. Something along those lines. Basically if you stop fighting hard for the chance to act you should stop and find another profession. Kudos to those I know who changed courses when they realized they didn’t have the fight to keep on going and ended up being successful elsewhere. And kudos to those I know who didn’t stop and kept on going. They know it’s a hard road but they love it and fight for it! Just know it’s okay to change your mind at any point along your path. I saw too many people hang on for too many years because they didn’t want their dream to end but their heart had left the game years before. I wish they had read this book as I do think it would’ve helped them figure out if they really wanted in on the game or not. If you want to be an actor or are struggling to be an actor read this book!

I’M NOT AN ACTOR - and I liked it!

This book is marketed as a book for aspiring actors, not a memoir, and that is certainly the case. I’m not an actor at all, but I was still curious to read it. When it came up for $2.99 on a daily kindle deal, I jumped at the chance (I would probabaly not have paid full price because I wasn’t sure if I’d find it totally boring). I followJenna Fischer on instagram, and sometimes she posts really interesting “day in the life” stories when she’s on set at her current show. Even though I have no interest in acting, I am fascinated by that lifestlye, and all the behind the scenes info she posts. I’m also a huge Office fan - aren't we all? I found the book to be just like her instagram stories, but more detailed of course. I loved reading all the ins and outs of being an actor - starting out, auditioning, being on a set, etc. It’s fun to read because she brings in details about her own experience, so you're exposed to little easter eggs and backstories about The Office and other projects she’s worked on. For non actors who just like Jenna Fischer, her style, sense of humor, etc., you're sure to enjoy this book - and learn something!

Jenna is your honorary acting coach .

I bought both Audible and Kindle version , and I am happy i got both. This book by far was one of the best book that I have read that guides through your journey of becoming a working actor in a competitive show business. What makes this book great is that Jenna shares her experience from her early days as struggling actor until she hit the jackpot with The Office and she provides a lot of useful tips on how to make the best out of every opportunity that you come across. She goes to the point and keeps you engaged the whole time. After reading this book and listening to the Audible ( Narrated by Jenna ) I become more motivated to pursue my acting career and learned how to maintain positive perspective . I highly recommend this book for aspiring and experienced actors and definitely keep a copy of it in your library. You will definitely refer back to this book over and over. Thank you Jenna for sharing your valuable acting experiences.

A glimpse into the struggles it may take to become an actor

There are two main audiences for this book. One audience is aspiring actors looking for advice on how to achieve their dream. The other audience is those people leading more “normal” lives, but who are curious as to how an actress seemingly just as sweet, vulnerable and determined as the Pam Beesly character found success in Hollywood. I think author Jenna Fischer wrote for the first audience, while keeping an eye on the second, potentially much larger audience. (I fall into the second group.) I was expecting a combination of advice and anecdotes written “with amusing candor and wit” (Amazon description). And that’s exactly what the book delivered. Jenna’s journey to Office success clearly had its ups and downs. She doesn’t shy away from talking about times of disappointment or frustration, but she doesn’t dwell on those negative emotions. The book’s tone is of someone who stayed determined, tried to always remain busy & creative and, most importantly, kept her sense of humor. Bottom line: I found the book a light, easy read. I’m also a bit in awe of the struggle it may take to become an actor. I suspect an aspiring actor would rate this book higher as they should see it as either a guidebook to success or as a life preserver while they continue the struggle to “make it” in Hollywood.

DO IT!!! JUST DO IT! JUST- JUST DO IT!!!! *SHIA LABEOUF VOICE*

You know a books really good when it gives you ENERGY during an all-nighter! I seriously couldn't put it down... I mean eventually I did but I didn't want too! I can only relate it to the feeling I got when I read the twilight series... Btw I don't care if you hate Queen Stephenie Meyer and her crazy fans because I was one of them and I ADORED her ,okay. But ladies and gentlemen there is a new queen in town and her name is Ms. Jenna Fischer! I will admit I never watched The Office... I know, I know. I'm a terrible person, but are you surprised? I just told you I was a crazy Twilight fan... Anyways, I'm watching it now and its hilarious! What can I say it just hits different now that I'm in my 20's...Also, Jenna's humor really does it for me in this book... JUST BUY IT! BUY IT NOW!!!!

The best actor-help book I've ever read!

I've read loads of actor-help books over the years. Los Angeles "survival" guides, actor biograpies, autobiographies, memoirs, etc., and not one of the authors ever opened up this much about their professional experiences, and related so accurately what it's like being a new arrival in L.A. - not knowing anyone, doing extra work to be on set and try to get into the union, being reluctant to get involved in unpaid projects, only to realize that you have to do unpaid projects to meet people and become more involved in the industry, and get footage for your reel, which will eventually lead to better paid and bigger jobs. She has large helpful chapters on headshots, resumes, self-submissions sites, everything. She talks about going through multiple agents at the beginning of her career, and how easy it is to lose them - they close their doors, leave L.A., or die, and you're onto the next one. Am I reading about my own life?! This book is half autobiography, half actor-help, and I loved it. I couldn't read it at night because it got me all riled up, wanting to be productive and create something, which isn't conducive to sleeping. Jenna includes detailed descriptions of her many years struggling to be seen, to get the meeting, to get the next part, which is something that most of the actor-written books I've read failed to do. Books of this nature often feature someones detailed stories of each project they worked on, but tend to leave out any career struggles or roadblocks they encountered, making it seem like they were an overnight success. Nobody is ever an overnight success. Jenna's tale is relatable for every actor, and her warm mix of information, humor, and encouragement made me feel like I was having a conversation with a good friend. Reading her book felt like reading parts of my own story, reminding me that I'm not alone in my journey, and making me hopeful for what the future holds.

Helpful and fun

I'm not an aspiring actor, but this book is still a very worthwhile read. For those who are aspiring actors, there are loads of helpful tips here on how the industry works, how to behave in certain situations, what's expected of you on set and off during a production, what you should look for and what to avoid, etc.. Super helpful (this coming from someone still trying to get into a professional field, alas a different one). It's also very entertaining. Whether specific to her experience or just her story telling style, it's just a fun and funny read. Love the motivation behind it and really enjoyed this book.

Actors: Do Yourself A Favor

Jenna's writing is so relatable and succinct. I found myself unable to put this book down. She did such a great job melding antidotes of her personal stories w/ practical footnotes on all things acting: headshots, reels, union, mental stamina, etc. My only critique of this book would be, I wished she interviewed more people of color in her "brushstrokes" chapter. Their creative journey is completely different in terms of 'navigating Hollywood', whether you agree or not. Inclusivity is important. I also wished she would delve into marketing yourself digitally as an actor. Granted she talks about it a bit but I found it to not be sufficient enough, considering how dominate the digital space is. I know she came up at a time where she was still submitting through the hardcopy of backstage but I'm sure she could have easily gotten some feedback from casting when they're "googling" a talent. Overall, if you're an actor or anyone that is even remotely creative, I highly recommend getting this book. You will not regret it one bit.

but getting television work after 5 years is actually pretty quick, so if you are handing this off ...

I knew most of this from other books I'd read for actors. I think if you know nothing about the industry its very helpful, but getting television work after 5 years is actually pretty quick, so if you are handing this off to an actor-hopeful who is older than 19, make note for them to read more than just this one book!

LOVED it ♡

I got this book for my husband who is an actor/comedian. We are both huge fans of The Office and even though he isn't a fan of books, this book was able to capture and keep his attention. We both couldn't put it down, Jenna Fischer is so funny and there is a lot of BTS info in here for any other office fans. This book isn't just for aspiring actors or anything although it is extremely informative if you're looking for that. I just have nothing but good things to say about it. If you are a fan of the office and you haven't read this book you are wrong.

Hilarious, helpful, and endearing... A must have guide for all aspiring actors!

THIS BOOK! It's hilariously honest. Jenna's journey isn't glamorous and she tells us every detail, which is so refreshing from other "how to" books. Jenna tells us about every pitfall and victory she experienced and the recipe that got her to each end which I found the most valuable. On top of it all, this book is laugh out loud funny. I laughed out loud reading about the evolution of her headshots, and found value in the details of how she improved "what she was selling" with each round, and how she finally found her way to the role of Pam BECAUSE of the correct headshot. (Also, I hope she burns those overalls as well.) In short, I wish I had this book 20 years ago but I am excited that it exists now for everyone starting their journey!

Dear actors freshly in LA:

I bought this book because I was hoping it was everything it is (as an actor who wants to move to LA to pursue my acting career seriously). I strongly recommend my actor friends to read this book! Especially if you moved to LA (or are moving to LA). She gives her personal insight as a professional working actor, and is very encouraging about it all, while removing your rose tinted glasses. Really reminds me of my acting coach Scott Rogers’ advice. After reading this book, I became curious about finally watching The Office (a friend of mine who’s a huge fan of the throw was thrilled, because he’s been trying to get me to watch it for years). Any way she references it a lot ‘cause it was one of her biggest lucky breaks after almost 10 years of nothing, which is the average for struggling artists in LA, 10 years give or take.

Not Just for Fans of The Office

If you're an actor or have even has an inkling of being an actor, you need to buy this book ASAP and like 12 more copies to give to your friends (realistically, if you're an actor you're probably working 6 jobs just to make ends meet, so at the very least, get together with your friends and pitch in to buy a group copy). I'm an actor currently working a 9-5 because 1. Adult life is expensive and 2. Having health insurance is kinda sweet, and this book really reminds you that if acting is what you want, you need to put in the work and just do the thing. It's easy to get caught up in the daily grind of life, but Jenna's voice is incredibly grounding and an excellent reminder that in order to live the life you've dreamed, you need to take risks and get out there. The best part is she tells you how to start making a community for yourself. She breaks down the business and the big "Need to Knows" in a simple, straight forward manner. I've read countless biographies by actors and no one gets down to, "This is the insane amount of work I needed to do and this is how I did it." They all give you a very whimsical tale (which is super entertaining, but not really helpful in the grand scheme of things), but Jenna gets right to it. You don't need to be a fan of The Office or of Jenna to take something incredibly powerful away from this. I'll be shocked if this doesn't become required reading for young theater kids.

You are an actor? GET THIS! You are trying to go down any path thats not well tread - GET THIS BOOK!

What a joy it has been to read about the journey of Ms. Fischer. The book feels like a friend talking to me about the hilarious platitudes of her life as an actor. I've spent 2 years in an acting conservatory and another two going through much of what the book describes. There's wisdom in here I wish I came across sooner. The book is also super valuable to anyone who's trying to walk down any unusual path, whether acting or entrepreneurship. There's a lot to learn from Jenna's honest tale of failures, persistence, self-doubt, more persistence, openness, trust, serendipities and so much more. And the lessons aside, the book is so entertaining. I finished it in a day and it turned my sad day around. I was laughing out loud with her so many times. Get this. Get this now!

Well worth it

Insightful book written by a cast member of the tv show “The Office.” The author gives great advice and tells her story of trial and error and perseverance in a tough business. She tells it like it is and the experiences she went through before her big break. She also goes through preparations (headshots, resume) as well as the many different agencies that are available. The most important thing is auditioning. It is your job interview. This book was recommended to me by my audition instructor and in my opinion is well worth it.

What fascinating ideas about acting and actors

I am just starting out on my journey of acting. It is definitely the path less traveled. But hey, I only have one life and I wont spend it without creating. Awesome book. So many insights into the triumphs and downfalls of being a working actor. The book is written honestly and justifies artists who put their souls on the line so that they can entertain. Who knows how my journey will turn out but I wont be alone, even when feeling like I am. Jenna is a funny, charismatic, honest actor and author. Thank you for sharing your life journey, thus far.

Great For Actors And Non-Actors, Too

I'm not an actor (not at all), but I love a good celebrity auto-biography and I love LOVE The Office, and I loved this book. Although largely actor-specific, I thought Jenna offered some great life and career advice, applicable for anyone who's a creative of any kind. There are some thought-provoking messages about persevering through failure - like REALLY persevering - and about recognizing when you KNOW you want to do something, and believing in it and seeing it through. And the behind-the-scenes Office anecdotes warmed my heart! Overall a great read for actors and non-actors alike. <3

I will be re-reading. It’s that good!

Great book! I really appreciated the thoughtful, honest, and immensely useful account of show business. Anyone beginning within any industry should take account of all of the points within this book. You must approach your dreams with unyielding and relentless pursuit.

Warning, not a biography.

I'm giving it 5 stars because I'm sure it's fine book but I didn't finish it. I had just finished reading a few biographies recently and this went on sale and being a fan of The Office I jumped on it. This is not a biography however, it's a self-help guild geared toward aspiring actors and actresses. I hope it helps some people out there, but I also hope Jenna writes an actual biography at some point as well.

Everything is great except for two things..

I love Jenna for writing this book, every aspect from start to finish was very helpful. She goes over every important detail an aspiring actor should know, as well as her own experiences becoming an actress. But, out of the whole book, I only noticed two small negative things. At one point, where she discusses getting the right headshots, she mentions “hire the right photographer” which could be helpful advice, but wouldn’t apply to everyone. Headshots are sometimes the primary issue for a struggling actor, simply because they’re unaffordable. Hiring a photographer all together could be out of the question. Also, in another chapter she recommends an acting teacher that helped her along the way, but after doing research I found that their classes are overly expensive, which is understandable on why she chose those things, because she discusses how she was an active employee while living in LA. Overall, the book was really useful and helpful, and it’s up to the reader to take the advice and produce it into their own journey. I sure will!

Good

I am not an actor. Nor do I ever aspire to be one. However I really enjoyed this book. I gave always been curious about the industry and this gave a lot of peeks inside. Also I loved her writing style. Very informative, while still maintaining a friendly tone. Jenna seems like a best friend or big sister. Who really wants you to do well, and wants to share her sage advice.

Very Enjoyable

The original reason for me purchasing this book was Jenna Fischer. I like her in The Office and I bought it for that reason alone. Let me state that I'm not an actor and I have no desire to be one. However, I totally enjoyed this book anyway. It is chock full of anecdotes and gives a unique perspective on the steps required to be an actor. It also tells of all the struggles Jenna went through to make it in Hollywood. Very enjoyable and easy read.

love this book!

if you're new or just curious about the entertainment industry, this book is full of great info! from the beginning stages of your career to booking movies or episodic television, this book can help you give some insight and how to behave in the audition room too! was recommended to me by a old manager of mine, and although he wasn't great... this book WAS! a easy read full of valuable information. i recommend.

We love Jenna Fischer

We love Jenna Fischer! As an avid fan of The Office, it only felt right to support anything Pam puts out. We bought this book before my husband (the actor) and I relocated from Texas to California to pursue his dreams. As a spouse with hardly any knowledge of the business, I found it really insightful and it helped us to prepare for what was ahead. We still reference it every once in a while. Would definitely recommend.

For moms and dads

This opened my eyes to what my 24 year old son who moved to LA to act is going through. I already learned the significance of small successes he is having rather than ignorantly saying 'mm hmm.that's nice dear'. I can engage in meaningful dialogue with him now and we are both so grateful. I know what he should be doing like working on his reel. I get why getting his first showcase is big deal for him. It's enriched my supportive role and our relationship which is more than i expected when I began reading this book. Please read this book if someone you care for is struggling to become a working actor. You'll both be better for it.

I wish I had this book years ago.

I am almost finished reading it, and it is exactly what any actor, or performer, needs to read. The information is spot on. It's perfect for the beginning actor, but actors with a bit of experience can also get a lot from this book. I'm not a novice, and this book is encouraging in that it lets me know that I am right on track. I highly recommend it. It's only a couple of years old, so the information is still very relevant.

An excellent book.

As an actor in the early stages of my career, I can say with certainty that this book is a perfect representation of good advice for aspiring actors. Although this book covers most of what I've already learned and experienced firsthand, the fact that this parallels my own experience in the business is a good indication that it's a great read for others interested in pursuing a career in the field. Jenna is honest, and her anecdotes are hilarious!

GREAT BOOK FOR ASPIRING ACTORS!!!

As an aspiring actress I loved this book! I learned so much about the entertainment industry. Jenna is absolutely right, school teaches you to be an actor. They teach you skills and etc, but they never teach about agents, management, auditions, set etiquette, or the business side of the enetertainment industry which I feels they should teach because if your going to be an actor this is very important information. I loved this book... I’m glad I purchased it. A MUST READ!

Amazing Insight

WHERE WAS THIS BOOK WHEN I FIRST STARTED OUT ACTING?!!??! So useful, EXACTLY what my experience has been after 5 years of figuring things out myself. The only misleading statement she made was suggesting new, broke actors to move to West Hollywood. It's one of the most expensive areas in LA, and there are much cheaper options available. Other than that, loved this book. Fun read

Quick Must-Read For All Pursuing Their Dreams

Jenna handles the ups and downs of being a "working actress" with the same honest and warm personality that made us all root for Pam Beesly-Halpert. I will say, if you're looking for an in-depth peek into what it was like to be part of the cast for one of the greatest modern sitcoms, this may not be the best book for you, as she only discusses "The Office" for about a chapter (with a few lovely anectdotes in between). But if you're looking for a true how-to on how to turn your talents into a career, this book might be just the thing! Truthfully, a lot of the lessons she offers can be applied to anyone looking for ANY job, not just one in the world of theatre (or film, or television... "dramatic arts," if you will). You'll laugh, you'll cringe (OOH, that one casting director!!), and you'll close the book with a twinge of hope. I'd recommend this book to anyone who's just turned a major page in their own story and is thinking "Now what?" You might just be inspired!

Fantastic, Useful, and Inspiring

Jenna's book is part bio, part step-by-step instruction manual on how to make your dreams come true! Her charming and genuine midwestern personality shines through, and I found it very enjoyable, interesting, and exciting. It's particularly moving how she describes her 6-8 years of poverty before she hit it big, and how she implores us never to give up. Just one thing, there, Jenna -- you say extras need to bring their own snacks, but I've been an extra so many times in Hollywood and in my experience extras are always offered catered food (from good to excellent quality) and a crafty table. Many extras don't even go grocery shopping -- they live off of all the great food they eat at work!

Fantastic Book. Loved every second.

Finished the book and it's wonderful. If you are just starting out, or you've been doing it for 13 years like me, it's still filled with uplifting yet honest views on the business. I'd recommend this to everyone that is / wants to be an actor. Heck, even if you don't want to be an actor but are curious about the business, buy it. Jenna is effortlessly funny, sweet, charming and likable. I couldn't stop turning each page. Finished the book in 24 hours.

best book ever

Seriously, after reading this book it relieved a lot of frustration and self-disappointment. I had some common experiences and feel a whole lot better about my path and taking it easy and not stressing. I now celebrate any callbacks, and all my auditions like, woo I did it, that's all I wanted and is as far as I'm getting. And when I was let down by not receiving a deal, I celebrated as if it was like being fired, made it so much better. Thanks Jenna Fischer!!!! <3

Very interesting

This was great considering it came out right after I went to a seminar that Jenna did in New York. I’ve been acting for over 20 years, but always goes back to basics when I see an interesting book. I think a must read for any actor, listen to the stories that you think just happen to you. Enjoy.

A fun read even if you're not an actor

I'm not an actor, but as a huge fan of The Office, Jenna Fischer, and TV in general I still found this an enjoyable read. Amidst all of the advice for actors there are many great stories from Jenna's career, as well as great insight into what life behind the scenes is really like.

Informative and Engrossing

I bought this book out of curiosity more than anything. I'm not in show business nor do I plan to be, I just really love The Office and Jenna's character Pam, and happily this book is equal parts biography and practical advice for the aspiring actor. It really is well written; Jenna has a succinct-yet-descriptive writing-style. The curious observer won't be let down by this book, and it's got a tremendous amount of info about the machinations of Hollywood and great advice for the aspiring actor.

Impressive

Excellent predatory work that every newbie actor should be required to read. Jenna comes across as genuine. It was easy reading for us not in show business but interested in what it is like. I really enjoyed the insight into an actor’s life. Thanks, Jenna. P.S. Watched every episode of The Office. Now I’m going back to watch your other performances.

Really helpful book if you are trying to be an ...

Really helpful book if you are trying to be an actor/actress in the business. On top of the sage advice Jenna gives us. Hearing her actual story and learning her arduous journey to becoming a regular name in Hollywood is uplifting and will definitely help struggling actors/actresses out there because they will know that even the people who made it in the business paid their dues and went through hardships as well.

MUST read for Aspiring actors!!!!!🙌🏼👏🎬

This book is a MUST read!! I’m not kidding no lie Jenna is so amazing this book I have no words she gives so much insight on what it’s like starting out as a Actor great advice on headshots building your resume etc I know a lot more than what I thought I knew great for aspiring actors such as myself should definitely read this book it will not let you down!! Who ever gave this book a 3 or 4 Star is crazy!

Great book

Such a fun book. Well written, and insightful. I appreciated it because a lot of the information she provides is just great life advice, that can be applied regardless the industry you work in.

Incredible

Amazing read. My plan is to save up every paycheck I get and move to Los Angeles next year to finally pursue my dream and Jenna Fischer made me feel so sure about this crazy plan of mine. I cannot wait to pursue that journey and I will take this book along with me so I can have Jenna Fischer as my mentor along the way.

Love Jenna Fischer and love her advice

I'm not an actor, nor do I aspire to be one, but I've worked in the entertainment business for a long time as a writer so I understand how it operates. Fischer's advice is spot on, funny, generous and extremely practical. Highly recommended to anyone who dreams of being a working actor.

A Holy Grail and Talisman for aspiring actors

I want to begin by recommending this book to any aspiring actors, their friends/families, and anyone curious about the insights to an actors journey. As an aspiring actor myself, growing up miles away from any major artistic cities and the first in my family, this book was like a seasoned aunt, guiding my inexperienced self though the facts and rules of show business. And all while keeping a personal connection with the author, and her journey from an aspiring actress to a seasoned one. (Not to mention including a few hilarious stories a long the way) I give this book my highest praise, and will be keeping it in hand throughout the many years to come as guidance and support. (For those of you who have read the book: This survival guide is my Molly Shannon) 😊

Acting for dummies.

Love this book. This is an amazing book for beginners actors. She gives you tips and great story telling. Well keep this book for tips as I progress in my field of work.

Love!

As an aspiring actress, I learned so much from this book. Jenna Fischer is a great writer and is very thorough in explaining her days on set and what to expect at auditions, callbacks, etc. "Yeah, Beesley!" :)

Super insightful

I’m getting into acting very late in life and this information was super helpful and very much appreciated. I loved the stories and interviews as well.

Time well spent!

My daughter LOVED this book. It was a fast, easy read. Funny and blunt, Jenna offers practical advice with a large helping of reality about being an actor without killing the dream or crushing the soul. In fact, my daughter, after feeling very lost as an actor during Covid lockdown, felt immediately inspired to get to work making a new road map for her career post-vaccine. Many thanks to Jenna for putting the spark back in her eyes!

Great product! I went to college with Jenna and ...

Rocket shipping! Great product! I went to college with Jenna and was really fun to read about our college days!

Great Read, Great Author

I got this book for my girlfriend for Christmas and it was admittedly because I wanted to read it as well. Jenna Fischer is an American Treasure, the way she acts, writes, and just overall presents herself exudes class. I highly recommend her book for anyone interested in the entertainment industry or any Office fans who want some fun stories and pictures from the glory days.

Awesome read, even for a non-aspiring actor!

I'm not an aspiring actor and I loved this! It's like an educational memoir. Jenna goes into her experiences in LA and it's an interesting and funny read! I think it's worth exploring the path to fame actors have to take.

Fun and informative

I got this because I'm a big Office fan and like Jenna. It was a good read, full of industry inside info good for both aspiring actors and just regular people like me interested in how things work.

Calling all dreamers!

Jenna is funny, informative, real and honest about the industry. Even if you are not an aspiring actor, this book will motivate you to never give up your dreams whatever they may be!

You Probably Need This Book

This book is seriously worth your time. I bought it for my actress wife, who really enjoyed it and got some useful information from it. Then I read it, and it gave me an insight into an actor's profession that I was sorely missing. Then I sent a copy to my parents to help them understand why my spouse wasn't just booking gigs and no, there wasn't a movie or show coming out that they could see her on right now. Believe the hype. This book is worth your time.

Realistic

Most comprehensive, educating, inspiring and realistic book I have read. If you are an aspiring or made actor, please please go find this book and delve into it and I bet you will never be daunted in this world of acting of film industry

I bought a copy for her to sign.

Jenna graduated from TSU in my hometown, and recently returned to speak on her path to becoming an actress. I got to meet her, and she signed my copy.

A perfect read for a person with an ordinary life who wants to work as an actor.

I loved learning that Jenna grew up in a small town, had an ordinary childhood, majored in theater at a regular college, and truly struggled. Lots of straightforward, solid advice. As a theatre actor, I found it enjoyable and helpful to learn about the LA scene, and that there was still tons of amazing advice that pertained to me. Fun and inspiring read.

Such a great read!

A refreshing read for actors at any stage, particularly us starting out in a big city. I'm a huge Office fan, so it's great to hear Jenna's experience in an authentic voice. Highly recommend! I flew through this book.

A book every actor needs.

This was very informative and I feel like I understand more about acting and the life I am pursuing more than ever before.

Honest, down to earth, funny, and full of great advice! Thank you Jenna!!!

I LOVE this book! It couldn't have come at a more perfect time in my acting career. Jenna's book is so full of motivation, sound practical advice, and personal inspiration. She is humble, honest, and down to earth and not to mention hysterical! I love how open she is about her journey - I have to admit my favorite parts are her personal stories about times when she failed because it reminds you that even talented, successful actors have their down moments as well. After reading this book I felt refreshed and ready to tackle my goals. I highly recommend this book - you won't be disappointed!!

Funny and inspirational

As a struggling actress, this book is insightful, funny, relatable, and inspiring. It has opened my eyes to realistic goals and perseverance! Absolutely would recommend buying this if I were you!

The way I watch movies has been changed forever

I haven't bought this book because I want to be an actress, but as a way to get an insight into the movie industry from actors' perspective. It's given me all the insight I needed. Very informative and entertaining at the same time, "The Actor's Life..." has made me gain some extra appreciation for my favorite performances. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone like me, a curious motion-picture fan.

Must Read for any Actor

The best book to read if you are an actor planning on moving to or living in LA trying to.pursue acting. THE. BEST. I recommend to all my friends and to people in classes I take.

This book is a fun read for anyone!

Easy read. Really fun. I have no desire to be an actor, but it was a fun read to see how auditions, and lifestyle of a starving actor really are.

My new acting bible!

First of all, the book arrived on time and in perfect condition. Secondly, I devoured it in two days. Such extremely helpful information, and entertaining at the same time. It's my new acting bible!

More relevant to actors than Jenna fans

I found a lot of humor in the book. But much was like a self-help book. I'm not interested in becoming a professional actor, so the self-help was only mildly interesting.

Applicable for actors and non-actors alike

Fischer is able to give detailed instructions about steps to take in pursuit of acting while also connecting more broadly about steps in pursuing any job. Do be aware that, while she includes personal experiences, this isn’t a memoir; it’s a book about process

What a gift to actors!

This was a very fun book to read even though I am not an actor. I found it very interesting and informative… I think any up and coming actor would find this to be a valuable resource for their profession. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Fantastic!

I ordered this book for my husband and he LOVES it. There is so much practical advice and inspiration for aspiring actors and dreamers. I'm looking forward to reading it when he's done!

like this book

i'm not an actor but likes reading this book. Jenna Fischer shared her struggles and hopes for her career and it motivates me.

Nicely Done

I enjoyed Jenna's book. I am not an actor nor do I have a strong interest in being one. I thought it would be interesting and it was. The advice she gives can be used by people from all walks of life

PAM!

Well written, and a cool look into what a life of an actress may look like. I love learning about the stars who do so well in film that I love.

Every young person will benefit from Jenna’s how-to do actor adulting.

This is a survival guide for ANYONE trying to take the leap into the crazy big world out there. Learning to persevere, join and enjoy the ride is so much better with Jenna, especially with her cute pre-Office pics.

Not an actor, still loved it!

So I currently work in HR like Toby, but did some theater in high school so I was interested in the book. I bought this book because I like Jenna and I LOVED it. Definitely get the audio version.

Great read for my son who is an up and ...

Great read for my son who is an up and coming actor. It reads just as if Jenna Fischer is talking to you.

Couldn’t put it down

I’d recommend this book to all performance artists no matter whether they’re working or aspiring to. It’s beautifully written, informative and highly entertaining as well. I love the way Jenna manages to talk so much about herself while keeping her ego in check. She’s totally loveable. And she draws on so many of her actor friends, sharing their experiences as well. Wonderfully rich!

Practical. Speaks for teens who want to go into performing arts

Purchased as a gift for a 15-year-old Who aspires to the performing arts. She loved it.

Must Read For New Actors!

I love this book so much. Jenna is very relatable, and her writing is something I enjoy reading. She lays out exactly how the business is, and gives some great advice. I recommend this book for anyone in the profession; old and new.

Great read! So interesting!

Loved the story! I finished this book in 3 days. I do not have any desire or intention of becoming an actor but I was curious and fascinated by her story. I am an Office fan and I wanted to know what happens behind the scenes. I hope she writes another book!

Important For Actors

Some might find the advice in this “outdated” or “basic” (Bullsh*t) but what I found compelling and so helpful in this book is getting into the headspace of a working actor. Of validating the fears, insecurities, and confusion which have permeated the brains of many young and old actors as they venture forth into finding where they fit in the entertainment business. Thanks Jenna! Maybe I’ll eat Mint Chocolate Cake with you one day!

Good to learn from

My daughter is learning a lot from this book. Great to learn from other people’s experience.

Jenna makes this an easy read like she's talking to a friend

Insightful, comforting reality of being a working actor in Hollywood. Jenna makes this an easy read like she's talking to a friend.

Must read if you are a beginner or aspiring actor

Loved this book. If you are not an actor and want to adventure on being one, this book is super helpful. Jenna gives you guidance on how the union and non union work works which I had no idea before I read her book. Also, the importance of perseverance and patience through the process. I highly recommend this book.

Real, simple, funny. I was sucked in.

I am a huge fan of The Office, and after listening to her on the LadyGang podcast I KNEW I had to have this book. Its so good! I love how open Jenna is. Great stories even for someone who is not an aspiring actor.

Amazing!!!!!! Must read!!!!

Amazing book. Wish I had it when I first moved to LA. It puts everything into perspective!!! And I learned so much and felt less alone. Amazing guidance and tips. So glad Jenna did so many podcasts because it convinced me to buy it. So glad I did! Page turner!

excellent

Excellent Book, I recommend it

Great book

Book came highly recommended from a lot of friends in the entertainment industry. Some of it is repetitive having been working in the industry for a couple years now but well worth the read.

The best book, so hilarious

Amazing book! Strongly recommend it!

Major help to me as an aspiring actor, filled with gems

Jenna Fischer's book is awesome she gives so much advice and the way she tells and remember her stories are 1 of a kind. Not only a great book for actors but it can always be read by anyone just for fun. Highly recommend this book especially for actors.

Very helpful for a new actor

The book was full of common sense stuff (if you are already an actor) and a good read on her experience. It was informative

the audiobook is great

it's like listen to pam teach you stuff =)

Funny and Informative

I really liked this author from the office and she gives great advice on how to make it in the entertainment industry while also sharing funny personal experiences, it was most definitely an easy read.

Great Advice

Great advice for a person looking to get into acting. Like Jenna said, it's a bunch of information that people don't tell you, so it's like having a friend in the industry that actually wants you to succeed.

Fun, quick read!

Fun and informative book about Jenna's life and how to guide for aspiring actors.

Not just for actors!

This book is geared towards actors but if you loved The Office and Mrs. Fischer I would definitely recommend this book. They stories are so funny and she tells you the ugly side of Hollywood! Super quick read!

Important and Motivating

This book is substantial: It's full of fun, heartfelt anecdotes and practical, straight forward advice for the working actor. It's mentorship in book form and I highly recommend it to anyone starting out in the entertainment industry, not just actors.

It's Amazing. Hands down.

The Best "HOW-TO" guide on Acting I've ever read. Not just a Bio piece, although she does share stories wonderfully throughout the instructional process. It's amazing. Hands down.

Not only for aspiring actors

Read this book even if you have no ambitions of becoming an actor. If you liked The Office, you are interested in how TV and movies are produced, and want to know some anecdotes from Jenna's life - this book is for you.

Yes sir

I love Jenna and the book is great

Good book.

Good Kindle read.

Fun read

I really enjoyed this book! I expected it to be more of an autobiography but it really is more of a survival guide with actual advice to aspiring actors. I am not an actor so I would have like more stories from Jenna’s life, but there were definitely enough to be an enjoyable read.

Get this book.

If you aspire to be a actor. This should be on your reading list. I am not sure I have ever read anything as well written or on point as this book. This is the reason everyone I. Hollywood is talking about this.

Laugh out loud funny and so relatable

Inspiring

Brilliant book. It was the perfect subway read for me going to and from my temp job

AMAZING BOOK

Jenna Fischer is sooooo inspiring. She tells it like it is. Her advice and experiences are so interesting to read. She gives such an amazing inside look into what happens when you’re trying to make it in Hollywood. Love this book SO much.

Honest and relatable

Loved this book! So real and honest about the industry. The stories were funny and relatable. A great read for anyone trying to make it in a tough industry. Or just anyone, really.

Awesome

I thought it was a great book, couldnt put it down

Read it in one sitting.

A really fun read, and held my attention enough that I read it in one sitting. It reveals the day to day of an industry / lifestyle much like Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential.

Great read, lots of good stories

Great read, lots of good stories. It has a lot of good information if you are trying to become an actor, but even if you're not it's interesting to see what that life is like.

Read it before you head West!

An easy read with lots of real world, practical advice about the realities of Hollywood, this book applies to anyone seeking fame and fortune in Tinseltown - not just actors.

Practical advice with personal wisdom

Son is just starting out in the acting business. He is not a big reader, unfortunately, but he has been glued to this book! Real world advice with a great sense of humor. Great job, Ms. Fischer!!

Crucial read before and while you’re in the biz.

Loved the anecdotes. Also, loved the tips and recommendations on how to cope with stress and anxiety. Would recommend to anyone who thinks they’ve stagnated or are lost on whether a professional entertainment career is their cup of tea.

Best practical guide go the actinf business ever

Every actor that hasn't worked in the business should be required to read this. Humble, informative, self deprecating, honest and on point. So glad I read it. Should be in the curriculum of every theatre program- and that includes julliard.

This actors life is great

It’s a good combination of an autobiography and a guide on how to become an actor. While I don’t want to be an actor I really liked hearing Jenna’s story and personal experience. Mostly got it becuase I’m an office fan and loved Pam, but Jenna did not dissapoint

LOVE IT

I love it so much and I love Jenna. I'm so happy she made this book.

Five Stars

Gift to my daughter, she loves the Office and really wanted to read this book!

Amazing

I love this book! Read it in less than two days as I've been hooked the second I started reading! I've learned more from this book than any other acting book I've read so far!!! I suggest this to anyone who wants to or is pursing acting!

great to have this guide that clarifies everything and sets ...

Thank you, Jenna, for laying out this “road-map”. Having received tips and tricks from many sources, great to have this guide that clarifies everything and sets it out in straightforward manner, with some humor and soul baring thrown in.

If You are an Aspiring Actor...

Read this book! It is nothing more or less than a contemporary guide to being a working actor. Jenna and her friends are generous with their stories, advice and expertise.

Amazing book for Actors who feel like they are alone

Jenna's book makes actors know that every expierence they have had, from breaking down in a pottery barn to making pizza from crackers, a part of a journey that everyone has to take. What struck me was not the hardships before her role on the office, but the hardships after. Even after "success", an actors life is hard. I have recommended this book to everyone I know.

Worth it

Loved this book!

A super interesting and at the same time light reading

Jenna is so graceful. A super interesting and at the same time light reading. Great book by a so nice and smart actress.

Love this book!

I bought the audiobook and hardcopy. I think this is such a great book especially for people that want or think about the process of getting into the entertainment industry. I have always (secretly) wanted to get into the entertainment industry as an actor but the practical side of me decided to get a business degree and work a Monday - Friday job. However, I have always been fascinated with the entertainment industry, filmmaking, the process it takes to work as an actor or make a film. I have many books on movie moguls, studios, biographies, etc. I have never read a book like this one that breaks it down for the reader to understand how the process goes. I highly recommend this book. I’m glad I bought both the audiobook and hardcopy (for reference). Still haven't given up my dream of getting into the entertainment business:)
