Wonderful book by great author... but the print quality of this edition is VERY poor.
I'm leaving 5 stars because this is a FANTASTIC book. Very different from any other horse book. I was given this around age 13 and I had a really poor attitude when it came to horse shows, often angry at myself for not being "perfect", and this book really changed my outlook. The book contents are pure gold. I wanted to buy a copy for a young rider in my life who also suffers from perfectionism, hoping it would influence her as well. However, I was extremely disappointed in the quality of the printing of this copy! It was NOTHING like the original I have from years ago. It's little better than something made on a crappy photocopier. The photos were horribly dark, grainy, and crooked! I don't think I've EVER seen such horrible printing in a published book! Shame on the publisher for letting this slide and putting copies out there. It is not gift quality.... I think I'm going to have to re-order and hope I get a better copy, even if it's a used hardcover.
Daily reading to me
I used to ride horses and I have been Jane's FB friend for a long time. She's a really lovely and creative person. I haven't finished this book yet because I use it in the morning during my devotions. I like to read a few paragraphs at a time and will reread it over the years.
Great for anyone that competes, especially with animals
This is a must read for anyone who competes. I attended a dog training seminar with a well know obedience trainer and she recommended this book. Some of the examples are dressage based, but the concepts can be applied to any sport. I have an agility dog and after reading this book, I readjusted my thinking on what success is and we started to improve.
Big help to my daughter!
I recently bought this book for my soon to be 12 year old daughter. She has taken riding lessons over 4 years and changed over to dressage this past year. We bought her horse 3 years ago and she has been a bit of a training project, but wonderful. My daughter tends to expect too much of herself and shortly after starting this book, said, "Wow! I didn't know everyone had issues with their horses!" She has been a happier rider and approaches each ride as an opportunity to work on challenges. Her positive attitude has really helped her confidence and riding. Good book!
Helpful Information that Goes in Any of Life's Arenas!
I bought this for my child who shows livestock. I think that Savoie says a lot of the same things I do, but it's good for your kid to get that information from another reliable source as well. The message of this book can serve the reader well in any arena, be it work, education, showing, training, whatever. I've enjoyed Janie Savoie at Equine Affair, and value what she has to say. I highly recommend!
highly recommended for everyone
This can be applied to life in general...you do not have to be working with horses... I was volunteering for Free Rein and one horse was like a teenager, but by the time I finished reading this book, I understood I was listening to advice from other people instead of this darling horse. When I had to put him in the fenced area after our classes together, he was leaning his head against my shoulder and I could kiss his nose for being such a good boy. We had started out the class session with him squeezing me against the wall when I saddled him so I had come a long way and he rewarded me for my efforts!
A must-read for any level or discipline of rider!
I was so excited to see one Jane's books finally in Kindle format, I sure hope to see more of them in a Kindle edition soon! I have read this book through several times and I always find more good pointers. Being mainly a western rider I could still use all these tips in my discipline. I have even bought an extra hard copy of the book and gave it to a friend, and she found it incredibly helpful as well! No matter what level or discipline of a rider you are, you're sure to get some excellent tips from this book!
excellent book very helpful
I am just learning to ride English and this book is very helpful. I also loaned it to a friend who is going to get her own copy because she likes it so much. I will be going to my first show in october and am glad I have this book. I love the ideas and think they would be helpful to anyone at any level or discipline. You can also use these ideas in other areas of your life. I cant wait to get this book back from my friend so I can read it again. It is one that I know I will refer to often for reinforcement.
This book is a game changer for me!!
This is a great aid to my dog training journey. Very clear and motivating. It gave me lots of tools to incorporate my mental game in obtaining my goals and objectives.
Wonderful insight!
Jane makes you feel comfortable being where you are in your riding. You are always at the starting point for the future. Her insights make me feel like I can go forward from this point and make positive progress no matter what happens. It is all part of my individual journey. I would recommend this book to all horse riders, no matter their discipline, no matter their pursuits, it all applies.

I love this book and Jane too
I love this book and Jane too!!! Met her at Equine Affair in Ohio and she actually signed my copy!!!! She is just as nice and fun in person!!! I find her technique easy to apply and because she is awesome in person, It's even better.
Great plan of attack
I love the concepts in this book! This is a book I will read and reread! Everything is very applicable to any discipline.
Super Helpful book!
Have reccomended this to students and friends for many years. It is simple, easy to understand, and has made a difference for both myself and others.
Think Positive, it Works!
This book was recommended by my riding instructor to build confidence and understanding of horse and rider. I found the book very, very affective overcoming fears, knowing positive thinking works in all phases of life, not just riding. I highly recommend this book and am very grateful to have it. As a novice adult rider, it has worked wonders! LW
Great perspective!
Jane has wonderful tips on developing a positive healthy perspective in competition. She's also got some useful tools for helping you to prepare.
Inexpensive and useful
Was recommended by a friend and is easy to read and useful.
A must read !!!!!
This book is a must read for anyone who competes even if not in horse events! I use it to help with my dog Obedience trials !!!! Thank you, Jane !!!
Inspiring
Jane has a great way of speaking with you through her books in a way that feels more conversational and less technical. This book is about being in the right place mentally when you're riding, which for me is the hardest part! You know that wonderful feeling when everything is going right? Well Jane explains how to have that feeling more frequently during your rides, whether you compete or not. I've also applied some of these concepts to my personal training clients since they don't just pertain to horseback riding. I only wish that the book was longer...I felt like it ended rather abruptly, but maybe that is because I read it on the kindle and I was enjoying the content.
That Winning Book!
This is a must-read for any equestrian who needs to train mind as much as body. It is written with humor, clarity and an insider's understanding of how learning to give the proper mental aids to our brain is even harder than mastering the proper cues our legs and hands give the horse.
Very good book
Even though I don't do dressage, I could apply it to dog sports. I did skip some chapters as they were very dressage specific.
Five Stars
helping me solve the mystery of me.

That Winning Feeling!: Program Your Mind for Peak Performance
The book is very well written and is helpful to all people that compete with a pet or animal. It can be used with everything from horses to dogs and evey thing in between. It has changed my attitude and performance in the agility ring. I highly recommend it
Good book for competitors
I purchased this book on a recommendation from a fellow competitor at a dog show. Although it is for horse folks, it applies to dog folks as well.
That Winning Feeling!
Great Content! This was a book that was worth reading. It helped me with my competitions, and to better understand my horse.
The Winning Feeling
Enjoyed reading this book. The book was very helpful in giving several ways to overcome fears, see yourself as a confident rider, and makes you feel as if you are not alone. Great book to revisit!
Thanks, Jane...
This is the first book I ever bought on how to use your mind when riding - in fact, I own TWO copies, for some unknown reason. They have different covers, and a slightly different subtitle, so that may be what threw me. The inside of my older book is all marked up with highlighter, and it's a familiar friend. Jane Savoie, if you are not familiar with her, is an Olympic competitor. It takes strong mental focus, and lots of determination to reach that kind of a goal. She wasn't a talented rider when she started her quest, nor did she have the best horses, but she didn't allow that to stop her. Instead she chose to learn how to leverage every opportunity - even if that was just the opportunity to watch a top rider. Jane learned that the things you say to yourself are absolutely vital to your attitude - and that your attitude is vital to your success. You can learn to use it to your advantage, or you can allow it to use you. You can be the master - or the slave. Jane gives many, many examples of people who used their mind to overcome all kinds of hardships, and she also gives many exercises to use to help you do just that. You don't need to be "talented", and you don't need "the best" horse/tack/support team/etc - all you need is the desire to do the best you possibly can with what you have available.?"Talent" is highly over-rated. It's not the most talented rider that wins; it's the most DRIVEN one. This book has helped me immensely with my riding, by showing me examples of people overcoming things that "should" have completely stopped their riding careers, and by giving me practical exercises to help me create an awesome relationship with my horse. I highly recommend that you give it a read, mark it up, take notes, and see what it will do for you. Happy Trails! Patricia Reszetylo AcceleratedLearning4Equestrians.
Surely the way to success!
Excellent book. Excellent for the novice or the advanced rider. Excellent motivator for any other sport or even in general life. It teaches how you can change from a pessimistic person to an optimistic person. It is filled with delightful stories from the author's life, all providing inspiration to the reader. A must have!
Feeling that winning feeling!
I am not a dressage rider, yet I found this book to be completley inspiring! It taught me so many things that myself nor my trainer could ever instill in me. 2 years ago I was a Multi National champion on my horse HL Karavan+/ and I truly believe that this book lead me there. before a class I would read selected passages from my trainer, and I went in the ring with a sense of accomplishment even before the class was finished. I would reccomend this book to any athlete who has ever doubted his or her abilities. I can not express what Jane Savoie's writing has done to improve my sportsmanship, and riding skills.
Great Self Help book for Anyone
Great book for anyone who is even slightly intimidated with competitions in the show world. This is an attitude adjustment guide & a way of thinking for any style of riding. Positive review for a positive minded book!!!
A must-have for any rider, any discipline, any breed!
This is just a superb book! It has helped me enjoy the journey, be happy with our best, and enjoy every moment of riding and showing. This is the kind of buy you read with a highlighter in hand. Well worth buying 2 copies--I've spent many a morning in the truck on the way to the show, reading up on last-minute reminders. Can't say enough good things about this one--and it makes a super gift for any horsey friends, too!
Great book..
I am not a dressage/english rider- but I think this book and it thoughts/concepts can be applied to aspect of your life. Loved it
Great for competition nerves
Great book. I was recommended this by a friend and use it for competition nerves for dog shows not horse shows but it works just as well. Get the book follow the exercises and see those nerves disappear.
GREAT >:)

An inspirational read
I am lucky to have a very talented homebred competition horse . However I had developed a negative attitude regarding competitions due to her difficult behaviour .This book has helped so much. I visualise my success at shows and it works! I have recommended this book to my friends. Jane Savoie writes such helpful advise that even if you are involved in a non equestrian sport this book will, I am sure ,help you develop the Winning Feeling !
Essential and great mind psychology guide for your successes
Jane Savoie is a great and spirit uplifting author. I find all of her books extremely useful and knowledgable. They have put me on the path to achieve my long term dream to compete in the Olympics in dressage discipline. "That winning feeling!" Is what I will experience.
