Cas Holmes
Combine the textural quality of stitchwork and the spontaneity of paint with this practical, beautiful guide to landscapes in mixed-media textile art.
Renowned author Cas Holmes brings together the world of the stitcher and that of the painter as she demonstrates her technique known as “stitch-sketching” and shows how to develop your approach to textile art. Focusing on the common language between the two forms, she begins with basic advice on keeping a sketchbook, stitching on paper and fabric, and working digitally. Cas then looks at both urban and intimate spaces, capturing the changing seasons, the technical aspects of painting and dying cloth, experimenting with photos, creating stitchscapes, attaining inspiration from found objects, and so much more.

A beautiful visual journey.

The first thing you’ll notice is the texture of the cover. It feels like cloth. It’s beautiful. My advice is to first just page through the entire book and just soak in the visual aspects of the photograhs. They are a fabulous representation of textile art. Then go back through again and read the details about each photograh. Then delve into the text. You’ll notice that the “how to” sections like screen printing, for example, have intructions and suggestions listed. There are not a bunch of photos showing each step so from that standpoint it’s not an instruction manual. But there’s plenty of written instruction. Holmes’ descriptions of her own creative processes and those of other artists are fascinating, well written and readable. Even if you never actually do any of the art techniques, this book is a great addition to any crafting library. Enjoy!!

Another great book from Batsford

This isn't really a "how to" book. It isn't simply eye candy either. It's a generous look into this artist's process. Her observations and treatment of landscapes are superb. I recommend this book for textile and mixed-media artists. The binding and paper are beautiful, photographs and text are clear. The text is inspirational. I admit that I am biased. I am a Batsford fan!

Great Eye Candy - Not many instructions

Loved the photography! The eye candy is beautiful! HOWEVER I want to learn the process. There are a few instructions, but not step by step like you would expect. Not sure if I'm going to keep this or not.

Trip for the imagination, treat for the eye.

The book is so well presented, beautifully illustrated. A real treat for the eyes and the imagination. Explaining the different forms of printmaking, how to apply these to cloth, utilizing different mediums that are “cloth” friendly. Pretreatments are explained and how to apply, easy to understand. With the different art featured with each design element , holds my interest and makes me want to work through the book, page by page. Well done, and worth every penny.

Grounded in Color

This book has lively text and excellent inspirational photos for moving from the landscape to textile. Good use of color and stitch. A number of artists are included so that many styles and techniques are illustrated. A solid buy!

Not extremely educational

Lovely to peruse.

Fine examples of remarkable works

As an art quilter I am drawn to mixed media and landscapes. This book has unique perspectives and wonderful examples from multiple artists. Well written and helpful for ‘pushing the boundaries’.

Beautiful book

This book is lovely and inspirational.

Disappointed!

Regurgitated techniques so there was nothing new there. Not enough of Cas Holmes work and too much of other artists work which was so dissimilar from her work that it had no relevance. I was so looking forward to this book being released and it has been a waste of money

Wonderful book, useful on so many levels.

Inspiring mixed media artworks from Cas and insight to how they are created with beautifully written explanations and inspiring idea "recipies" throughout. It provides an introduction to other interesting artists who work with textiles and insight to their work too. I think this book works as well for someone with little or no previous art knowledge as it does for those who are experienced. It is a joy to dip into for inspiration but also a good read with lovely pictures for those who enjoy landscapes!

This book is amazing!!!

I bought this book before I even took a class with Cas. She is such a talented artist and tutor. This book is everything I hoped it would be. Intelligent thought processes, well laid out. and the art work is phenomenal I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone interested in textiles or landscape or even if you collect beautiful books.

Great writing, quotes and range of artists included.

Very happywith my new book. Love the quotes and references to other artists. I need to start creating again and this book will help. I am reading it through from the start after scanning through a few times. I know that I know a lot about the process, but this book will act as a helping hand.

Gorgeous book

This is a truly beautiful book. The cloth cover is exquisite and the contents superb. I look through it again and again and the observations, information and guidance contained within are well worth reading. Whilst there are works of other artists featured in the book, there are plenty of examples of Cas Holmes work - which is what particularly interests me - I am so glad I decided to buy this book, it will always be treasured.

What a wonderful experience, both to read, look at and follow.

I like photography but recently I have become interested in branching out into mixed media projects. I have some Indian block prints and paints, a sewing machine, and fabric I can print on (both photos and blocks), and I want to experiment with combining all these mediums. This book has given me a lot of ideas and food for thought. bring on the snow weather when I can hunker down and get going! I highly recommend this book.

Full of artistic inspiration in mixed media

This book is full of inspiration. Textile and mixed media art at its best. This is the fourth book by Cas Holmes that I have bought and I have also been lucky enough to attend 3 of her workshops. The book continues the landscape journey in mixed media.

A Different Approach to Landscape

Bought this as soon as it came out and have used it quite a bit. As well as textile artists, It would be great for painters who want to look at things in a different way. One of the strengths of the book is that Holmes talks about how she personally reacts to landscapes and begins to assemble her work. I could look at this book all day long, but thankfully it has also inspired me to produce some work that reflects the cityscape I am in now. There are a few techniques given in the book, but with not too many details. This is a book to inspire you to do it yourself!

Informative, instructional and inspirational reading.

I love the velvety feel of the cover! Absolutely packed with ideas and projects.anyone who enjoys doing a little more than just stitch will enjoy this informative and colourful book. A book for the more advanced stitch artist and those wanting to aspire to produce beautiful stitch art. Cas Holmes has included many artists in the book, in interview style writing, giving examples of their work. An inspiring and enjoyable read that will be so useful in my work as a budding textile artist. Thank you Cas.

Beautiful book, not just for the textile artist.

A truly beautiful and inspirational book. Cas Holmes takes you through how to see and use the environment as inspiration. How to build a sketchbook and how to build layers of fabric paper and thread. The book is full of wonderful examples of her work and that of others. I am a painter and collagist and there is plenty in this book that inspires me. I cannot rate it highly enough.

Not as expected.

I expected this book to show how to follow a process of using material, sewing, etc. to produce beautiful 'paintings'. Instead it contained mainly very abstract, and what looked to me like very basic results, eg. a few straight lines attaching pieces of material or other media onto a surface. I could do that myself with no instruction but would not be at all happy with the result. Perhaps beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There were a few references to some beautiful work by others but no background as to how to achieve such results. Very disappointed. I returned the book and am awaiting a refund.

Demonstrates how to develop your style

I found this book rather disappointing at first as I flicked through the pages. There is a lot of work from other artists. Which annoys me when a book is padded out with other artists’ pieces. However on closer inspection I found many pages where Cas explains in some detail how to achieve her particular style of work. I will enjoy trying my hand at some of the samples.

One of the best textile landscape books I’ve ever bought

This is an exciting book from its tactile cover to the inspirational photos. On a good day I can jump in and produce my own bits of art and on an uninspired day I can browse the packed pages of the book.

Very Interesting

Quite a few other crafts people included but I liked the variation; Cas Holmes shows some interesting pieces of work. The book is visually pleasing with a tactile cover, ideal for a book on textile art!

Amazingly beautiful

Cas Homes has done it again.A beautiful, fascinating, inspiring book full of amazingly inventive work I love it and so do my art students- so inspiring.

Includes instruction as well as inspiration!

I teach creative skills and I find all of Cas Holmes’ books very inspirational. I like this one because it has instructions as well as inspiration. As always another beautiful book from this experienced author and artist.

A good book

Plenty if inspiration. Well produced and illustrated.

Disappointing

Bit disappointing. Not what I expected.

This is a book that will instruct as well as inspire.

I like everything about this book. It is packed with advice and inspiration. Cas Holmes explains how she works but encourages others to bring their own character into their work. I pre-ordered my copy back in July but it was definitely worth the wait.
