Paul Kidby

A stunning portfolio of Discworld illustrations from the brush of Paul Kidby, Sir Terry Pratchett's artist of choice.

Paul Kidby, Sir Terry Pratchett's artist of choice, provided the illustrations for The Last Hero, designed the covers for the Discworld novels since 2002, and is the author of the bestselling The Art Of Discworld.

Now, Paul Kidby has collected the very best of his Discworld illustrations in this definitive volume, including 40 pieces never before seen, 30 pieces that have only appeared in foreign editions, limited editions and BCA editions, and 17 book cover illustrations since 2004 that have never been seen without cover text.

If Terry Pratchett's pen gave his characters life, Paul Kidby's brush allowed them to live it, and nowhere is that better illustrated than in this magnificent book. For fans old and new, this beautiful collectors item is the perfect gift for Christmas.

'The closest anyone's got to how I see the characters' - Sir Terry Pratchett

Reviews (106)

A must for Pratchett fans!

The phenomenal pictures, include preliminary sketches never before published, are a joy to behold. This artwork expands the enjoyment of Pratchett's amazingly creative written works.

A reprint of artwork from other sources

Mostly a reprint of artwork from other books. If you have bought Art of Discworld and the Last Hero you would have the majority of what is in here.

Recycled

All the artwork is fantastic but a lot of it was already published in the "Art of Discworld" And I really wish the two-page spreads were fold-outs.

Lovely!

Given I'm a Discworld fan and Paul Kidby's art fits with it like Tenniel's fits the Alice books. And suddenly here is a whole volume of glorious Kirby art I can fit on my tablet. What's not to like?

Happy happy JOY JOY happy happy JOY JOY.

The shipping was incredibly fast. Now I'm a Pratchett fan. No way would I ever DISLIKE anything by him, or any artwork based on his works. Ok? But I was just overwhelmed by the genuine high quality of this work. It's very much worth what I spent on it.

A Discworld must

Great Artist paired with a great Author. These pictures really capture the essence of the Discworld and its characters. I'm so glad we are able to zoom in to see the details of the artwork but it would have been even better if the images had been scanned in at a higher resolution. Some are quite low resolution.

This book inspires me.

I showed this book to a family member who wasn't really familiar with Terry Pratchett and I surprised us both with how many characters and their backgrounds I could identify through the amazing art. This book is worth it for any Pratchett fan!

Should be more stars.

Just wonderful

Beautiful art book

It's a wonderful collection. Love having it in digital format. Zooming for detail is nice. Their faces make me smile so much it hurts.

Amazing Book

As a long time fan of the disc world having a chance to see all of the beautiful art in one book was very worth it.

Wonderful memories

Great images from Discworld and other Pratchett stories. Funny and beautiful reminders of a rich world I have loved visiting in all the novels.

For the collector in your life

Or, The Discworld Coffee Table Book. I kid, but I also cannot fit it on any of the shelves on my bookcases... Anywho, I said that Father Christmas's Fake Beard (at least the deluxe edition) was a fantastic idea for the Discworld collector in your life, but this is. Truly this time. There's a lot of art that person has probably seen (I know I have), but there it is all in one place for the first time. There's not a lot word-wise (but, as you probably know, Kidby is not an author), however Kidby opens each section with a quote from a Discworld book which, I guess, he feels best sums up the place he has drawn, then he gives a paragraph about what inspirations he drew from to create, say, Ankh-Morpork or the Chalk. If I had a complaint about it (because Lord knows I think it's pretty perfect) I wish a few more minor characters got a chance to shine. I know Agnes Nitt was included in The Art of Discworld and Sybil Ramkin was in The Pratchett Portfolio, but it would've been nice to see them here, especially since Kidby's drawing of the titular Eric finally sees a place outside those extremely limited editions. Also, I would've loved to see Kidby's drawing of Victor Tugelbend make it into here (I have the standard edition; I have no idea if he made it into the other editions). I know I'm coming off very "you can't please all the people all the time," but that's another drawing that was on a very limited and very rare edition of a book. But those are all personal complaints and two of those characters are seen in other books I own already so, who cares? It's a beautiful book and it's well worth the asking price.

Terry Pratchett's Discworld Imaginarium

If you're a fan of the Discworld series then there is no way you've not come across Paul Kidby's gorgeous artwork as he's been illustrating the covers since 2002 and has brought all of Terry Pratchett's most popular characters to life. This is an absolutely gorgeous hardback that includes all of Paul Kidby's favourite Discworld pictures, many you may have seen before but also some that were only used for foreign covers or limited editions or that have never been published elsewhere. You'll find images in a mix of mediums from black and white pencil drawings to sepia or full colour acrylic and oil paintings. I loved that some images we get to see the whole process from initial pencil drawing to finished acrylic painting. The images are split into categories which should make it easier for you to go back and find your favourite images at a later date. The Chalk - Focuses on images of Tiffany Aching and the Wee Free Men along with the occasional appearance from Granny Weatherwax and other characters found in the Chalk. Lancre - Set in the Ramtop Mountains Lancre is home to Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg (and of course her cat Greebo) and Magrat. Ankh Morpork - Expect to find characters like Rincewind, Twoflower, Moist Von Lipwig, Lord Vetinari, the Hogfather and groups like the Fool's Guild. Pseudopolis Yard - Home to the Ankh Morpork City Watch Headquarters here you'll see Captain Sam Vines, Captain Carrot, Sergeant Fred Colon, Corporal Angua, Sergeant Detritus, Nobby Nobbs and of course Errol. Unseen University - Hangout of wizards like Archchancellor Cutangle, the Librarian, Hex, the Eater of Socks and Eskarina Smith. Uberwald - Discworld's version of Transylvania and home to vampires, werewolves, the igors, dwarves, trolls and don't forget Amazing Maurice and his educated rodents. Death's Domain - Focuses on Death & Binky, the Death of Rats, Mort, Susan, Albert and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Terra Incognita - this includes all the images that don't quite fit into any of the other categories, things like Rincewind on the moon, the Dungeon Dimension, Dunmanifestin (the home of the gods), the Wyrmberg, Four Ecks, Rimfall and of course the Great A'Tuin. Ex Atelieris - This section includes drawings, paintings and sculptures of the great man Terry Pratchett himself both with and without his characters included and one of my favourite images of Terry playing chess with Death. This really is a stunning book, I wish I'd been able to afford the Deluxe Special Edition that is only available directly from Paul Kidby or via the Discworld website but even the standard edition is a book that any fan would be proud to add to their collection!

Incredible Art

If you are a fan of Sir Terry Pratchett's work, you probably already have an idea in your head of what the characters look like. But it’s so fun to see these takes from inside another head.

... art is a lovely visit to one of my favorite places. The book is beautifully made

A delight for any Discworld devotee. Highly recommended.

If you or anyone in your life is a Discworld devotee this is a book you should get. Considering I already own all the books and most of the spin-offs I wasn't sure I needed this too, although I do admire Kidby's work, but was tempted eventually by a good offer. It just goes to show how wrong one can be. Four hours of having the Pratchett shaped hole in my life filled and the prospect of many more was an absolute delight. 272 pages of excellent, lovingly reproduced drawings and paintings of Discworld, many of which are shown for the first time are a joy and the text gives a great insight into both the artist and the author. I had always thought Kidby got closest to depicting the Discworld of my imagination and can now confirm this. It is also good to now know why this is and have it confirmed by TP himself. Kidby draws the characters from the standpoint of knowing the whole canon so each includes details described over many books and also is faithful to the stories. Brilliant stuff and a great addition to my collection. This is a lovely book that everyone who loves Discworld will appreciate. Do get a copy.

Lush

Can I call this voluptuous? Well it's certainly sumptuous - much bigger than I expected and a lot thicker and packed with beautiful illustrations - the attention to detail is superb, and it's fascinating to see how they are worked up from sepia tones to final coloured pictures. My only niggle is that the equine skeletons are excellent, but the fleshed-out horses are pants. (Mr Kidby please go check Norman Thelwell :-) ) Otherwise quite brilliant!

Amazing, beautiful and a fitting tribute.

Beautiful. This is both a fitting tribute to the/my beloved Sir Terry, but also a homage to the incredible art of Mr Kidby. I asked for this for Christmas from my husband, but as we have just moved house, I have only now managed to go through this glorious book. I am in love with Mr Kidbys art. I adore his style - he really captures all the features, the characteristics, the idiosyncratic nature of everyone of Discworld. I cannot rate this higher than five. Love it. But it also made me really sad that Sir Terry has left this world.

Wonderful

This book is beautiful and amazing! I have read (Sir) Terry Pratchetts books for 31 years and the discworlds are my favourite. My Dad and my brother also enjoy them and to be able to get a bit of insight into the looks of places and people if the discworld and imagination of (Sir) Terry Pratchett is fantastic. They are very near how I pictured them in my head and it was touching to see a few pictures of Sir Terry as well. It’s definitely worth the price and a collectors buy also really enjoyable to read through every now and again

Visions of Delight!

Apart from the original works by Terry Pratchett which inspired Paul Kidby's wonderful art, this may be the greatest book I own. The images within bring to life the characters and locations of the Discworld so clearly, so vividly, I feel I could almost converse with them, visit the places myself. Without exception they benefit hugely from the larger scale of the pages compared to the book covers, although a few two-page spreads lose their effectiveness by obscuring detail where the pages meet. Thank you Paul Kidby, and thank you Sir Terry.

A Gem for All Pratchett Fans

If you're a Pratchett fan, then this is the book of your dreams ... all those wonderful drawings brought together in a wonderful, quality book. The illustrations are big and beautifully coloured. You also get the chance to see how Paul Kidby's pictures developed as he worked on them. A great present for any follower and an even better treat for me!

Would give it six stars if I could!

Excellent book with amazing artwork that I will treasure for a long time to come. Would definitely recommend for any fan of PTerry, fantasy artwork or detailed, "realistic" art in general.

Great contents poor wrapper

It's odd because this is great art work, love Paul Kidby's work however the book itself, I have now had 3 copies and each one has issues, curved pages, bent cover, dents on the edges etc all fine for a 2nd hand book but in a brand new item that just looks like cheap and poor construction. Luckily companies took the book back and amazon replaced it but in all honest in this day and age I expected better.

Wonderful

A truly great artist bringing characters to life. Terry would love every drawing and painting. I can recognise every character

Ideas made real

Paul Kidby has worked with Terry Pratchett for years and they worked in sync with creating these characters that sit I side our reader imaginations. A fitting tribute to a wonderful author who helped so many

In Memorium for Terry Pratchet

I have bought this for my son for Christmas, who is a Terry Pratchet freak. For years I always bought the latest TP hardback from Amazon for his present so now that TP has passed on I thought this would make the ideal gift. I did leaf through it before wrapping and I am impressed by how lovely it is - I know he will be pleased with his gift.

Beautiful and comprehensive

I've read most of the Discworld novels, so you can safely call me a fan. I was expecting the hardback book to have beautiful art - as I've seen a lot of the artist's work before - and it is - it is lovely. I was smiling turning every page. The quality of the book is also superb (and well worth getting the hardback for). It's the type of book where you carefully turn the pages with your fingertips to avoid messing up the pages. The "surprise" of the book is how much there is in it. You'd expect a book like this to be either too short - or full of "filler" - but there is a lot of art to see (including the cover art mockups before the final designs), the pages are full of it, and there's so many of your favourite characters there. Highly recommended!

Gran homenaje a Terry Pratchett.

Larga vida a Terry Pratchett.
