Amazing story - great for inquisitive three year-olds and older kids too!
My three year-old daughter received this book as a gift. She LOVES it! The book tells the story of a boy who finds himself in prehistoric times. The boy befriends a little girl named Om, who becomes his guide. Om and her family/tribe teach the boy about making tools, cooking with fire, cave paintings... when the "Stone Age Boy" returns to the present day, he grows up to become an archeologist, always looking for traces of Om and her people. This book is fantastic because it teaches a lot, without being "lesson-y." The story is simple, the illustration is beautiful... and, it is seriously "gender neutral." Great for boys AND girls! I highly recommend it for any child between the ages of 2 and probably 6 or so. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the price on this book. What a steal! I bought copies for my daughter's teacher, and for her friends' birthdays. Buy this book - your kid(s) will love it!
My two boys love this
I picked this up by chance at the library. My 5 & 7 yr old boys absolutely love this book, as do I! It is about a boy who trips and falls into a hole. He wakes up in the stone age where he meets a little girl the same age. There he learns about how they lived: how to make tools, how they hunted, how they cooked, how they worked as a community. It is filled with information, yet a quick, fun read. The ending is cute, when he wakes up back home he says everyone tells him it was a dream, but then there is a cute little 'clue' the author refers back to to make you wonder...! We have read it so many times, my oldest asked me if we could just go buy our own copy. My youngest has asked to bring it in to share at school. Boy or girl, get this, you really won't be disappointed.
Oh, this is my favorite book!
I had to teach prehistory to kids this year, and this book was invaluable. It shows every day life in a tribe of hunter-gatherers, but in a way that makes them seem -- what's the word -- human. ;) A boy falls down a shaft and wakes up in the stone age. A little girl finds him, and her family takes him in. Over the course of weeks, he learns how to do things their way, and appreciate their way of life. It is beautiful.
A story of time travel for young readers
I adore Satoshi Kitamura's books. My six year old daughter's favorite is The Comic Adventures of Boots. I like this one the best because you really learn a lot about life in the Stone Age, and the story has a surprise ending. While I was able to find Kitamura's books in California libraries, his work is sadly unavailable in my current location, Montgomery County, MD. I will continue to order his books from the UK, but I wish his work was more readily available in the United States.
Five Stars
Great info, beautiful illustrations. Perfect for our Early Humans unit.

Gateway to larger concepts
Like another reviewer, we picked this up by chance at the library. My daughter- four years old next month- was hooked from the first reading. It is a simple story written quite straightforward, and the illustrations are simple and fantastic, which is perfect for young minds being introduced to big concepts like time, and history, and archeology. But it also manages to invite little minds to think about what is already familiar to them, like "making things", in a more sophisticated way (like making tools out of found materials to make other things which serve practical purposes for the group). It also gives them a way to look at "work" from a family/community perspective, which is difficult to get in books that four year olds can grasp. We went to the American Museum of Natural History and were able to discuss things we saw in the exhibit (having to do with tribal living in North America) on a WHOLE NEW LEVEL after reading this book just twice at the time. I am surprised there aren't many, many more positive reviews about this book. Word must not be out yet. I am now looking for others like it, if indeed there be any. ;)
Touching story, factual information
Although quite long, this is a really super story showing what life was like in the stone age and how a boy, going back in time, learns to cope. His friendship with a girl his own age is touching and all the experiences he encounters are factual. My grandsons, 7yrs and 4yrs, loved it and keep coming back to it. The illustrations are first class and this helps to keep the interest going. It can be dipped into at any page once the story is known from the first reading.
So so so dull!
There's literally no story to this book. Or better, the story goes: once I fell and woke up in the stone age. Awesome, exciting premises, now anything can happen. No. It doesn't. The book is factual and, I'll give you that, informative. I guess it'd be perfect for a primary school teacher who wants to explore the theme. But as far as stories go, it's impossibly dull and verging on boring. Two stars because the images are indeed lovely, but otherwise I'd give it one.
Nice easy story to introduce children to the topic
I bought this book during the summer holidays, as I heard that stone age will be a topic at the beginning of year 3 (KS2, engl primary school), and both, my 7- and 5-year old daughters very much enjoyed the story. It is a nice, easy to understand story that introduces kids to the topic in an interesting way. At the end my younger daughter was excited and wanted to know, if stone age people really existed, still existed, if this was only a dream that the boy had or if it 'happened in real life...

The illustrations were a huge hit
I bought this book mainly for it's historical perspective for my grandsons aged 5 and 7. When I read the story to them I wasn't sure whether they would like it or not. The story itself is not one of their favourites, but they loved all the illustrations and spent many hours discussing them and trying to replicate the cave drawings, so it was a huge success.
A great book with lovely illustrations.
We originally borrowed this book from the library and it quickly became my 4 year old sons favourite bedtime story. We now have our own copy. It's the story of a young boy who goes back to the Stone Age after falling down a hole. He meets a girl called Og who takes him to meet her family. He learns all about their way of life and watches them fish and hunt. Og also takes him to see cave paintings. There is a nice twist at the end and a timeline to show how civilisation has evolved over the years.
Informative, sweet story
The children & I both loved it. The eldest is learning about the Stone Age this term & this book was a fantastic introduction of what to expect. Not only is it a cute story about adaptation, but also good information about how cavemen lived. We'll read it many more times yet.
Fictional story base, but full of great facts.
My daughter loves this (6yo) and is able to read it by herself. Good for boys and girls and compliments other children's literature on anthropology. Story is fictionional, but full of great facts. Focus's as you might expect on Stone Age people and lifestyle.
Great book to introduce the stone age.
Bought this to read with my class for our stone age topic. It's interesting, accessible and is a great introduction to a topic many children know nothing about. The children found it informative and wanted to read it several times. Perfect length too!
Great book
Good quality book. Lovely story linked to the Stone age. A great way of introducing this topic to children. My class loved it. Would also make a great gift for children of primary age with super illustrations.
My son loved this book (this is his own review)
My name is Zac and I am 7 years old. I am learning about THE STONE AGE in school. I have read the book the Stone Age boy and I think it was amazing. I give it a big 👍 The book helped me learn about how they hunted for food how how they make fire without matches. It was fantastic. I was really interested in Stone Age Boy clothes like their tops, caps and trousers. Oh and the pictures were amazing too.
5 Stars
What a fantastic read and perfect for a little adventurer. Fiction but highly educational and based on fact, with lovely illustrations and packed full of information I know this is one that we will read and enjoy for years.
Perfect for my Year 3 Class
This book was ideal for my Year 3 class. They loved it and were really enthused about the topic. Unlike some of the alternatives, this book is also spot-on in terms of historical accuracy. It's a fun and informative starting point for learning about life in the Mesolithic.
Bought for Home Learning
Bought this for my son who is in Y3. He was off school for a few months and this was being studied at school as part of the Stone Age topic. A good book. Enabled us to talk about life in the Stone Age.
Great literacy text for Stone Age topic, lower KS2
I am a primary school teacher and have used this book as a literacy text for Year 3 / 4 classes during our Stone Age topic ('Stones and Bones'). The book is told through first person from the perspective of a modern day boy who finds himself in a strange and different time. This really helped my pupils imagine themselves being immersed in the time of the Stone Age. Lots of great language and imagery.

Great intro to Stone Age topic.
My 7 year old read this easily. I bought it as he had been told to find out about The Stone Age during the holidays for their next (Year 3) topic. As it happens, it was also used as one of the class texts. It ends with a short note from the author which is inspiring for a young writer.

Clearly not the best Kitamura
Bought it as I like the author realy much. And my son was doing Stonge Age at school. Not sure about this book. Kitamura has provided higher quality work. Maybe worth to be borrowed from local library. But i wouldn't buy for a gift nor keep it home once the kids have grown up.
