“A picture book filled with giggles.” —Publishers Weekly

All the animals are in a panic. The elephant's sneeze would blow the monkeys out of the trees, the feathers off the birds, the stripes off the zebra! Even the fish and the fly, the crocodile and the kangaroo know what a catastrophe that sneeze would be. "Please don't sneeze!" they beg....

This classic story of an enormous sneeze in the marking, told in sprightly nonsense verse, is fun to share with a child at home or as a read-aloud at school. It's sure to make even wriggling little ones pay attention and join in!

And the crocodile's snout turned inside out!

This is hands down my favorite book from when I was a kid. I offhandedly quote it all the time and no one knows what I am talking about. It is funny. It rhymes and it has fun pictures and it is wildly hilarious. My favorite catastrophe is probably the bees on their knees with their rose thorns and glue. Or the bear that lost his hair and became bare. And it's not just my favorite book. My mom and her sisters have been fighting over the family copy since before I was born. They're all convinced that the book was theirs originally. Get this book. Cause family fights. It's worth it.

One of my favorite books from my childhood

I remember my mom reading me this book to me as a child, along with "There are Rocks in My Socks Said the Ox to the Fox" by the same author. I used to laugh and laugh and get her to read it again and again. When I saw this book, I had to get it for my nieces and nephews, just for the nostalgia and to see if they would laugh like I did. It's a great book, even if you think the animals should have just run away (my nephew said that). Loved by me, for sure, and my 4 year old nephew thinks it's funny, too. The illustrations are realistic-ish and wonderful, they definitely add to the story.

A childhood MUST.

As with so many others, this book was one of my very favorite books when I was little. I decided to look it up on Amazon and was delighted to find it, and bought it immediately for my 4 year old, who loves it just as much as I do! This book is great because it uses rhyme and cadence, blends character personality and animal traits, uses lots of fun and funny words that can teach a child to find new ways to say things, and if the reader lets go and just animates the voices, it makes for an unforgettable learning experience.

A very underrated children's book

My parents read this to me as a child and I have read it to all five of my children over the last 18 years. We all love it. The illustrations are great, the rhyming is fun and the whole premise is quite entertaining. I think this holds its own among the best from Sendak, Seuss, Scarry, et al. I guarantee you and your little ones will love it.

Chucklelicious!

I first read “Stand Back,” Said the Elephant, “I’m Going to Sneeze!” when my children were little, and now all these years later, it still brings a chuckle or two. The story is written in rhyme with lots of humor by Patricia Thomas, and Wallace Tripp’s artwork is charming. If you can get your hands on a copy of this delightful picture story book, it would be a perfect gift for the young ones in your life. All of the animals panic when the elephant says he going to sneeze. “Beware, beware,” Called the bees to the bear. “The elephant says he’s going to sneeze.” “Oh, please, Not a sneeze,” “That’s not fair. I declare, The last time he sneezed he blew off all my hair, And left me so bare I spent the whole winter in long underwear – I love children’s books, but this is undeniably one of my favorite. I give it 5 stars.

A fun book for any 6 year old

I was given this book back in 1987 as a gift. It's a fun story about an elephant warning his animal neighbors about his impending sneeze. It was a great story and my father read it to me and my siblings almost every night. I recently purchased it for my niece so my father can read it to her. It is a funny little book perfect for young children and the story is interesting enough to encourage children to read it themselves as-well. Also the illustrations on each page are colorful and drawn in such away you can see the reactions of the animals which perfectly accentuate the words written on the page.

Daughter liked it.

My 3yr old daughter likes this story. I can tell she likes a book when she constantly asks questions throughout the story. However, Im just not a fan of stories that rhyme. I think they are a little silly and always feel the author has to limit the story to words that rhyme as opposed to fleshing it out naturally. But then again Im not the intended audience. I like the incorporation of all the different animals.

A Truly GREAT Book for Children & the Adults in Their Lives

I first encountered this book over 20 years ago when it was given to us for our children. It is the hilarious story of the reactions of the other animals when, as the title states, the elephant announces that he has to sneeze. The objections and pleas of the other various animals are each quite funny, the pictures help children to understand the animal's concerns/fears, & the rest of the book is unbelievably uproariously hilarious (I refuse to spoil your enjoyment by going into the details). The poetry of the text is reminiscent of DR. Seuss, but in my opinion, BETTER! Both boys & girls enjoy this book. I have read it to an assortment of kids at a birthday party for my boys (20 some years ago) & recently have given it to my godson for his daughter and also have given it as a birthday gift for a friend's daughter- it is ALWAYS a hit! I highly recommend this book for children age 3 up to 9 as well as for their parents/grandparents, etc. Older kids may also enjoy it, if only in their memory. Guaranteed to please!

A FAMILY TRADITION

Our children are now reading this to their children who laugh just as much as we all have for many years. The writing is ingenious and the illustrations are amazing and hilarious. This is a book that you will pass down for generations and will be proud to give as gifts to those you love.

An amazing book!

I read this book every year in my 41 years of teaching experience. It was read to kinder thru 5th grade students. When I would put it back on the shelf, during silent reading time it would be the first book of the shelf. Over the years it lost its hard cover but I did not tape it back it on, because this showed how much it was loved. Definitely a book to have in your child's collection. I bought this one for my grandchildren to enjoy.
