Bestselling author Bear Grylls is best known for his seven seasons on National Geographic's Man vs. Wild, his current NBC TV series, Running Wild with Bear Grylls, and his adventures climbing ice cliffs, running through forest fires, and parachuting from balloons. In Soul Fuel, Bear shares the backstories behind many of his most daring expeditions and how his faith gave him the purpose and power to carry on. In 365 devotions he explores themes of hope, courage, risk, heaven, and more.

Soul Fuel is perfect for:

  • Men and women
  • Self-purchase or a gift for anyone wanting to deepen their faith
  • Fans of Bear's TV series and those who love to read about survival

Nature has taught Bear some important lessons, and behind every feat is a story of grit, determination, and strength found in faith. By reading Soul Fuel, you will discover:

  • How to find joy during the most difficult times
  • The importance of hope and taking risks
  • How to create courage despite anxiety and fear

Bear wants others to know, "I often don't feel very strong. Life can be a battle. We all feel that from time to time. But any strength I do have seems to come in the quiet moments at the start of my day. It comes when I am on my own, on my knees. It comes from taking time to be still with God. . . . So for me, starting my day like this really helps. It is like food. Like good fuel for the soul."

Perfect short devo for all ages - our boys 9, 7 & 5 LOVE it

We really enjoy getting to know Bear Grylls through his shows, adventures and books. When we spotted this devo - we ordered it right away and are so glad we did. From the minute we unpacked it - it has been a hit. It is a very short - maybe 5 minute read each day but long enough to get good conversations going. Our boys 9, 7 & 5 really enjoy Bear's adventures and how he is pointed us all to a closer relationship with Christ. Purchase this now and give one as a gift - you won't regret it. Thank you Bear!!

Great devotional!

I got this for my 15 year old son for Christmas. He reads it every day and loves it! Great stories and lessons and not too long, so he can read it in the morning before school.

Highly recommended insights on how faith applies and impacts each day

I'm already a Bear Grylls fan, and loved learning about Bear's faith and how it relates to my own. It's broken into easy, bite-sized reads, so it's nice to sit down with a coffee in the morning and read one or two of his stories. Extremely enjoyable and highly recommended!

Absolutely awesome!

A daily devotional not bound by dates. You get 360 devotionals you can go thru in the way suits you best. Bear Grylls did an amazing job!

Love this book

Such an amazing book. Bear puts Biblical knowledge in easy to read and understand terms. So inspiring and never preachy.

Great Devo!

Bear writes in a way that is easy to understand and grasp the deep concepts in the Word

Best devotional book - ever.

Do you like to underline key points when you read a book? If so, go buy a 6-pack of highlighters - - you'll need them for this read. I've studied the Bible and Christian thought for 64 years and have read dozens of devotional books. This is the best one I have ever seen. Faithful to Scripture, Grylls avoids sentimentality but his insights are heartfelt, clear and honest. Love is at the core of knowing Jesus Christ and Christianity is an adventure like no other. I reach for it first thing every morning. A treasure awaits me.

Bear grylls is amazing

Great read

Uplifting, honest words.

I saw Bear on Utube talk about this, I liked his openness. Bought for 26yr old son, who's enjoying the outdoor theme and guidance and encouragement in living. Good for all young men and women. Thanks Bear, a needed role model.

Good for the soul!

Bought one for myself and impressed by the content, modern way BG presents the material, now give it as a worthy gift!

A Great Devotional That Draws You To God’s Love and Truth.

Short, sharp and addictive daily devotionals that pick you up, dust you off and draw you into the truth of God’s word. Filled with the approach of love, mercy, grace and Truth, it’s impossible to just read one devotional a day. Very relieving and motivational studies bring calm to the storms of life and motivate you to embrace the day.

Wonderful!!!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Started every morning through this tough year (2020) in this fantastic devotional. Will read and reread over the coming years.

Love it. Really inspiring

My daily devotional

Great devotional. Bear is real. I love his non religious take

Inspiring, but not quite devotional material

This is a 360-day "devotional" book that is divided into topical sections. It's interesting that the numbering starts all over in each section, so even though it has enough for a year, the numbering doesn't align that way. It's good that each entry isn't dated, because it allows the reader to go at whatever pace they wish - no pressure. The book is called a devotional, but it doesn't quite fit the typical expectation of a devotion book. Entries are all different lengths, from a half a page to more than a page. They are really just inspirational thoughts and advice that have a verse added in the text here and there, with many of them being from The Message, a paraphrase that is not a translation of the Bible. It's very conversational, but not very deep. In some ways, it's like reading journal entries. In some places the writing feels very disconnected and not of the caliber of a published book. Dare I say it feels as if it is in print because of the author's notoriety and that if it was submitted to the publisher by any other author it would not have made it to print? The book is attractive with a leather-looking hard cover. The die cut dust jacket is nice too. Unfortunately, the publisher seems to have skimped on quality in other places. The book arrived with the spine broken and the cover coming off. The front cover is separated in the crease and it is tearing away, and in the back it is doing this about three pages in from the back. With daily use, the cover will be completely off in a short time. (I'll post a photo) Overall, I can't see myself buying more for gifts or recommending it to friends as a must-read book. I'm disappointed to have to say that, since I don't like to give a less than stellar rating of a book. Some readers might love it. It isn't bad - it's just average.

A different kind of devotional

This is not your standard daily devotional because some days are only thoughts that don't have a scripture of the day to reflect on. But like most of the others, most days are just a few paragraphs of insight reflecting around a particular scripture or part of one. All of them can be read in just a matter of minutes (as is the case with all devotionals). The layout is definitely different with two and sometimes three selections on a single page. Bear has a very honest slant to his thinking, and it's very clear and simple as well. He doesn't try to dive into some deep theological side-track that takes hours to explain or defend; instead, he just speaks as if you were sitting across the campfire from him and he just happened to think of something interesting. I really enjoyed this hefty tome (it's not made for a backpack hiking trip, which is odd considering the author). This is a great book to reflect on God's goodness in a casual, uplifting way.

Highly recommended

If you’re looking for an offbeat yet completely orthodox daily devotional, by all means get Bear Gryll’s “Soul Fuel”. To devotees of his “ultimate challenge” TV shows, the author needs no introduction; and the 360 short but cogent entries in this volume are equally fast-paced and challenging. As the author says in his introduction, this book is organized thematically, not chronologically. There are a dozen such themes, indicating that if the book is indeed used daily, there would be one section per month. However, Gryll emphasizes that the entries within the themes are not “dated”. The reader is encouraged to choose particular entries as moved by need or inspiration, to skip around or go back to those found most meaningful as the Spirit leads. There are plentiful scripture references within the meditations, but they are typically short one-liners, not lengthy passages, and are interspersed in a casual, relaxed way. From a practical point of view, this hard-bound book (I received the published edition, not a “proof” preview) is heavy and the print is small, but the page layout is open and attractive. It is the type of book one should definitely keep on a readily accessible desk or end table, especially if one has a “meditation spot” which encourages reading. Although the author’s language involves the masculine gender references to God, the scripture quotes are in fact taken from a number of different versions of the Bible, as acknowledged in the beginning; this, in my personal opinion, is a major advantage. The binding is a leather-look brown, and the title is embossed in darker brown, making it overall a very attractive volume with a ribbon bookmark included. I will keep it handy for my own personal devotions, and recommend it highly.

Good Devotional

Mornings in our house are hectic. My husband needed a devotional for his quiet time, so I ordered Soul Fuel. Soul Fuel, a devotional, is written by Bear Gryllis. Mr. Gryllis is best known as the host of the T.V. series Man vs. Wild and Running Wild. Few would associate Mr. Gryllis with devotional reading. In the book's introduction, he explains that Soul Food is his chance to share with others the fuel that he relies on to start and maintains him throughout the day [paraphrased from the introduction]. The devotions are short enough to enable readers to have time with God each day. The book is divided into 12 different topics with 30 devotions in each topic. There is no reading plan or suggested reading for any specific day. This allows readers to choose which topic they want or need to study. The book is well written. Many of the devotions give insight into the author's life and beliefs. I think that this devotional is for anyone who wants to spend time with God and get "refueled".

Young or old should check it out

Well Bear defintitely has an appeal of manhood that many other men admire and want to be like, so I had high hopes going into this devotional. + This is a SOLID book! Great quality hardback binding and it is needed because it is a thick book that you can throw in your daypack and take on a hike and reflect on while on the trail or even leave on your office cubicle desk for those moments you need to break away from the monitor screen. -- For a minute take off the celebrity name and I wouldn't necessarily know these are written from personal experience as they are fairly generic or ambiguous words of wisdom. It doesn't make the words any less true or worthy to chew on in mediation throughout the day. I'm just saying the fact it has Bear's name on it doesn't mean it is that much different than many other men's devotionals. + Every entry so far seems to follow the following pattern: a) a story, thought or anectdote; b) a piece of Scripture that is related to the first part; and c) a closing line of action or true contemplation. I like it. It is quick, with most tanking only a few paragraphs of reading, but the point is clearly made without a lot of fluff. + These are not arranged by calendar day or anything like that. Simply, here is the section topic (i.e. Risk) and the numbers are the entries under that section. Meaning you may remember you've read the first three under Risk and so time to try number 4 or a different one. Thus you can jump around this book easily. Those sticky note flags may be useful so you can have one on each section you read and know where you left off. OVERALL: I thought the entries themselves did challenge me and make me think and since it is such a solid book with various readings not tied to specific day of the year, I'm enjoying this very much.

Food for your soul and life

Bear Grylls Book "Soul Fuel: A daily devotional" represents Bear's beliefs & guides Bear's readers down their own path to finding their own enlightenment. Whether you consider yourself spiritual, religious, or on the fence, this daily devotional helps you. It is a leather book, with a slipcover that can be removed. The book does not have dates/days so you are free to flip through the book as you wish. Start with page 1 and follow through to the end, or open up the book and choose what page calls to you. No matter which method you choose you will inevitably come across personal anecdotes from his life that have guided him, helped him, made him the person he is today. What I love is that each lesson/devotional is easily applied to my own life without much, actually no, alteration whatsoever. It is a beautifully written, well thought out book, that gives you insight into Bear Grylls and ultimately into yourself.

Great!

This book is great! My wife ordered it for me but ended up wanting to read it for herself first! This a rare, great gift for women OR men, but it definitely has a more rugged look. It’s hard to find Christian devotionals that are “manly” Luke this one. The daily devotions in it are great. We both highly recommend this. You’ll love it!

Short, To-the-Point Reflections ALL Men Will Like

There is not a lot of "sharing" in this book. Men will appreciate that. There is not a lot of explanation or deep theological ruminations with historical explanations. There are 133 footnotes, but they are just the places the author got quotes (no explanatory footnotes because this is not an academic work). So the author did not pull this stuff out of his butt - he collected ideas from famous people and summarized them. But this book is NOT superficial. In fact, the short 1-page reflections are quite deep. You can read a short numbered passage in 3 minutes, then spend 3 minutes to 1 hour thinking, imagining, analyzing and/or praying. It's up to you. This book is for anyone who prefers bullet points to rambling prose. Even the way the text is laid out on the page, it is apparent that it will not require much commitment to reading. The brilliant part is what you do with the information when you are done reading. The book is friendly for young people who are not inclined to read a spiritual book but are looking for tidbits of spirituality. It is based on the Bible, but it would be friendly to anyone who is familiar with secular American and European thought. The plain, marbled-brown cover reflects the intended audience. No flowers or rainbows on the cover. An attached ribbon bookmark is a nice touch (you will look like a monk using a prayer book).

very casual, and an interesting read

It's full of super easy quick devotionals that are interesting and easy to read. These are just sips to get someone interested who hasn't been doing devotions. It would be great for some of the teens in my church. I think it's cool to see a "star" coming out with this. You're not going to get deep stuff from it, and sometimes they're so quick that they're not only easy to read but easy to forget. Still it's really cool and has a place.

Not a Fan of This Book

This is not what I would classify as a devotional at all. Perhaps it would have been better marketed as an inspiring journal read by Bear Gryliss.... that would have made more sense. In my opinion.... you can't call something a devotional that doesn't use scripture for the basis of each entry. I'm also not a fan of the Bible translation - The Message- that was used when scripture was referenced....but again that's my preference. As far as the quality of the physical book itself.... I will be shocked if it makes it a year... the spine was showing signs of being broke from the first time I looked at the book.

Good stuff. Loaded with excellent talking points & inspirational material.

Let me just start off by saying, I'm not in the group of "Vine Customer Review of Free Product." If you're looking for simple, down-to-earth, clear and concise devotional points rooted in scripture, Soul Fuel is for you. I haven't even read through half of the book and I absolutely love it. Aside from his background as a British SAS serviceman, Bear has authored multiple successful books. Although Bear is widely known for instructing survivalist shows, he is renowned for his determination and drive in the face of adversity all while being a committed family man with a dedication to his faith. Just the type person I would like to gain insight from, in the form of "devotional points." Let me just address some quick introduction points--which I have already left for the 3 star reviewers as a comment--“There are intentionally no formal dates on the entries in this book and no reading plan for you to struggle to follow. Soul Fuel is simply 360 separate entries, grouped around twelve themes that I find myself returning to again and again—hope, purpose, determination, relationships, vision, wisdom, faithfulness, courage, forgiveness, freedom, and risk” (Bear Grylls). The purpose of a devotional is to inspire a reader to expand their personal horizons and “create something that can alter a reader’s thinking and behavior” (Jerry Jenkins).

Deep Down and Personal

Get deep down and personal with Bear Grylls. This book was by no means what I had expected. I have watched his show here and there and was always inspired by what he did but I never noticed his spirituality. This Book truly is “Soul Fuel”. It reveals Bear’s personal experience with Christ, how it all started and how it has been with him throughout his life. Covering subjects like hope, purpose, determination, relationships, vision, wisdom, faithfulness, courage, forgiveness, freedom and risk with experiences, scriptures and personal insights, there is really something for everybody. This book will teach you something, no matter where you are on your journey with Christ. It was truly a great experience reading through this one. I definitely would recommend it!

An annual devotional for fans of Bear Grylls.

We got Soul Fuel for our 14-year-old son. He's a survival enthusiast and a HUGE fan of Bear Grylls. He said he was disappointed with Soul Fuel. He felt the devotional readings were very generic and he questioned whether or not they were even written by Bear or if they came from a ghostwriter. Rating: 3 stars.

Great Daily Devotional - Simple and Powerful

This is a different type of devotional, simple and easy to read but very powerful. I can tell it is written from the heart by a man who has great faith in the finished work of Jesus. I heartily commend Bear for stepping out in faith to boldly express his love for Jesus to the world. I received a copy and bought a couple for two of my boys. They are believers but they are young and the world keeps them too busy. The fact that Bear Grylls wrote a daily devotional interested them and is leading them to read it. It has also piqued the interest of one of the boy's girlfriends who is not a believer. She is reading it with my son. Out of 85 books, this book is the best one Bear has written by far and he can be assured it will produce much good fruit and build treasure in heaven. Thank you Bear Grylls for sharing your heart for Jesus and your love for others.

Bear Grylls Is the Best! Good for Tweens/Teens and Adults

This is part devotional and part memoir from Bear. He does not judge in this book. He literally says "no judgment here." He says do it if you can...don't do it if you can't. And his faith seems to come from a real place. His church is outdoors in nature...not in a fancy chapel. I really like his raw honesty and the stories that he shared. Great book. #SoulFuel

Good Stuff

I just love Bear Grylls- he speaks my language. I read his book “Mud, Sweat and Tears”, which is when I really gained a lot of respect for him. I’m newly getting back with God and like how honest he is- he’s speaking like a person and not a robot, “better than you” Christian.

Brilliant: Just Perfect for the Adventurous Faithful Follower

Bear Grylls is well known for his crazy antics and edge of the cliff adventures captured in the wilds and seen around the world. What many don't know is how his faith in God fuels so much of his life - and propels his adventurous spirit. This is a very easy to read (perfect for men!) devotional but don't let that term scare you. These small bite size readings are perfect for beginning every day.

Refreshing

"Soul Fuel: A Daily Devotional" by Bear Grylls isn't the format that I am used to for daily devotionals but it is a refreshing read. I am not familiar with Mr Grylls from tv appearances but that doesn't hamper the reading experience. The author writes in a forthcoming and plain-spoken manner. It is humble and relate-able. The anecdote and the Bible excerpt flow in a natural manner and makes for a thoughtful devotional. Very well done.

Try this to get a man connected to his soul

I got this for my son who’s drifted away from his roots in Christianity. He still believes, but feels there’s a lot of hypocrisy in the church setting. He loves nature and respects Bear so I took a shot. And he’s using it! The sections are short enough to hold attention and be read before a busy day. And you can tell this was written from someone who has had time to pray and realize what’s meaningful to him.

What's good for Grylls

Short, easy to read devotional snippets with a good variety of thematics ranging from Bear Grylls life experiences and survival escapades all of which are centered around his core religious belief and practices. Book itself is nicely constructed with sturdy hardcover and and good quality paper.

Solid

This book is very good. It is filled with practical applications with thoughts and scriptures to enhance the experience. We often think about spiritual things in very abstract terms. This collection of devotions gives you thought provoking direction for your daily life. I would recommend it to anyone.

Should specify it's xtian

This is a terrific book as far as it goes but it wasn't clear that it is Xtian. I thought it would be more like a general motivational devotion and geared toward active adults or even teens. Instead, there was some of that but far MORE with a decidedly xtian orientation. No bad but just not my thing.

Not a daily item book

I was hoping for a dated book to be read a day at a time. This book is not defined by a calendar. Plus there are only 360 knowledge bites. Other than that small point it is a good book. A blessing from its author.

Great for a quick daily devotional

This is a great daily devotional. It's a quick read each day, but has a nice Bible passage and then some insights from Bear Grylls. It's a great gift idea for anyone who is a fan of his. It's a really high quality hard cover book. Overall, it's a great book!

Very motivating!

Great book. Very motivating and insightful. I highly recommend for someone that needs a boost in their spiritual life.

Great read

Wonderful read. Well written reminder that Christ is hope for a world losing hope.

inspirational and easy to read

This is a book written from the heart, in simple everday language in which Bear Grylls's Christain faith shines out,A breath of fresh air in a sea of "devotional" books it is honest and wonderfully inspirining from a man who gets his strength from God,I enjoyed it so much I have already bought another one for my brother.Highly recommended.

If you’re a Christian it’s ok, if not I wouldn’t buy it.

I feel a little misled by what Bear G said on Good morning Sunday. He said, as I recall, that the book was for all types of faith, not necessarily Christian. I ordered it in that understanding to find that every daily thought is accompanied by a Bible text. I’m not a Christian and don’t want to read the Bible so to a large extent I’ve wasted my money as I feel the book certainly is underpinned in Christianity.

Wonderful words of wisdom

Beautifully written book which was exactly what I was hoping for after hearing BearGrylls on BBC radio last weekend.

Good for reading daily

I am enjoying this book and things I didn't know about Bear are so interesting. Some times you read a bit and it is so appropriate to that particular day its amazing. His Christian belief is like mine and his daily commitment is great. Although I am only part way through I love it.

Great book

Great book and good reading to start the day

Good Christian encouragement

Well written and very worthwhilel

Lovely words of comfort and encouragement

I'm going through breast cancer treatment at the moment, and when I'm experiencing a bit of brain fog, this is a lovely book to pick up and read a short devotion at a time when delving into the bible seems a little daunting. God bless you BG

Super daily devotional book

Great daily devotional, easy to read to and understand. Give it a go!

Super book

I never thought that I would buy a Bear Grylls book but this is so so good. A lot of devotional books are a bit, not sure of the right word non inspirational? Not this one, it's down to earth and any one can understand it . Probably the best book I will ever buy.

Inspirational & Refreshing

Refreshing! Inspirational! Non Religious! - a really great daily devotional book by Bear Grylls. This book is all about a relationship with the radical Jesus of the Gospels! I’ve bought several copies for friends who are on the faith journey but who have “had enough” with the established church! I highly recommend Soul Fuel

Disappointing & focuses on bible quotes

Really disappointing, the book is a bible with quotes in each paragraph. Apparently you can’t be happy unless god walks with you. Very little about Bear I thought

More Bible than Bear Grylls

Just book about God and Jesus Christ , nothing like other books I had. I was hoping read more about Bear not reading a Bible .

The Gospel in plain English

Wow! I have been searching for ages to find simple devotional notes for new Christians. For my refugee friends I needed to find something in easy English, avoiding complicated religious phrases, but at the same time explaining fundamental Gospel truths. An excellent introduction to morning devotions. Thank you so much.

Honest and helpful

Honest chat with Bible verses from a well known adventurer. There's a reading for every day of the year and more but no dates to restrict the reader. Buying this book has already led to at least 4 more sales as we've recommended it to others and had positive reports back.

Recommended Read.

Navigation. Would you start a trip with a dream, without a plan? A goal written becomes a plan, then a dream realised. Bear writes to us saying in life we can either have our own plan or pave a way in faith to a better, fulfilling life as a Believer in Christ. I recommend if you feel your soul searching for MORE than Soul Fuel is for you. Thank you Bear, for a truly enjoyable and memorable read.

Heart Strings

I bought this as a birthday gift for my adult son. He has many of his other survival books. So this devotional book surprised him and delighted him. This is a special book written solely from the Heart. I enjoyed its content too.

Not Bear's best

As both a Christian and a fan of Bear, I bought this book as soon as it was published. Must admit it is probably not his best though. Feels like he was pressurised into writing it and doubt whether it would appeal to people who don't share his faith.

Fabulously thought provoking

I bought this as an added extra so I would qualify for free P&P. This devotional is brilliantly written, with excerpts of Bear's life written between each month. It's an excellent book that will appeal to all. Buy it!

This is very good and helpful.

Great and inspiring. Not dated so avoid guilt if you missed a day or so. Numbered so can start any time.

Lovely gift idea.

Bought as a gift, lots of daily thoughts and devotionals. Interesting for both people of faith and those with no religious belief too.

Fantastic book

Fantastic book with deep insight to human nature and relationship with God

lovely book

a book you can actually just chose which page to go too or which passage to read , inspiring and thoughtful very enjoyable

high quality book.

ordered this for my father for christmas. It's a top quality devotional that covers 365 days of the year. He was very happy to have received it and has read it every day. Great devotional book for anyone.

🙏

Best daily devotional I've read. You'll be uplifted daily. I've bought many as gifts and everyone loves it.

Interesting read

Interesting to read about Bear Grylls experiences and his Christian faith. Would recommend

Doesn't live up to the hype

Didn't realise this would be quite so 'holy'. A bit hard to take on a daily basis.

Great devotional

Eventually arrived after been told 2 deferent times and days but happy with the book

Thought and heart nourishing

This is easy to read and uncomplicated. Thought and heart provoking and deeply nourishing.

Great book

Easy to read, interesting and practical to everyday life, I prefer this to life daily devotionals

So good, it's a must have.

Bear Grylls at his best:- real, humble and honest

Wow

A great book to read for your spiritual growth

Draws a clear distinction between faith and religion.

Really excellent book. Inspirational, practical and reassuring. Very easy to read in daily doses. Carries all the more weight for having been written by a young, 'hard man' adventurer like Bear Grylls. Highly recommended.
