Science raises questions only love can answer in this moving and thought-provoking novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of “heart-tugging and emotional” (Romantic Times Book Reviews) life-changing fiction.
One frozen embryo. Two families with life-long secrets. And a guy who never planned to fall in love again.
Maddie Baxter West is shaken to the core when she finds out everything she believed about her life was a lie. Her parents had always planned to tell her the truth about her past: that she was adopted as an embryo. But somehow the right moment never happened. Then a total stranger confronts Maddie with the truth and tells her something else that rocks her world—Maddie had a sister she never knew about. Betrayed, angry, and confused, Maddie leaves her new job and fiancé, rejects her family’s requests for forgiveness, and moves to Portland to find out who she really is.
Dawson Gage’s life was destroyed when London Quinn, his best friend and the only girl he ever loved, is killed. In the hospital waiting room, London’s mother reveals that London might have had a sibling. The frozen embryo she and her husband donated decades ago. When Dawson finds Maddie and brings her to Portland, the Quinns—her biological parents—welcome her into their lives and hearts. Maddie is comforted by the Quinns’ love and intrigued by their memories of London, who was so much like her. Is this the family and the life she was really meant to have?
Now it will take the love of Dawson Gage to help Maddie know who she is...and to help her find her way home.

Another Masterpiece by Karen Kingsbury
Even though the circumstance at the core of this book is not familiar I definitely found myself swept into the story. As always the reader is transported into the mind and heart of the characters. She is excellent at bringing twists and turns into the story. I definitely recommend this book and author. This book is a stand alone. There are some characters from her other books but it is not necessary to have read her other books to enjoy this book. Looking forward already to the next book.

Is it just me or are Karen Kingsbury book following the same cookie cutter format lately? Did I enjoy the book overall? Yes? Will I but the next book? Not sure.

I loved this book and I can't wait to see what will be the next story involving the Baxter's. I hope there is a follow-up book about Dawson and Maddie. I would recommend this book to everyone who loves to read. I couldn't put this book down. Read it in one day. Thanks Karen Kingsbury for another great book.
Grab a Tissue. A wonderful Story!
I love Karen Kingsbury books and I have nearly all of them. This is one of my favorites, but I didn’t think so at first. In the beginning Maddie seemed like an immature and self centered 22 year old. (I still think she might have been). A stranger informs her that her parents are not her biological parents. She does not believe this for a minute and tells them of the conversation. However they admit it is true. The fact is her mother used in vitro fertilization in order to become pregnant with Maddie. Maddie becomes extremely angry and leaves home, her fiancé and her new dream job to find her biological parents and a sister she didn’t know she had. She believes her whole life was a lie and will never forgive her parents. The stranger who shared the news with her was her sister’s boyfriend. This is who she contacts and runs to in order to get more information. He also is a devout Christian the same as Maddie. The rest of the story is about the information she learns from him about her sister and her biological parents. In the end she does reunite with her family. She learns what true family means and how to forgive. And that God is always with us no matter what. She also matures a lot. There are lots of tears but also lots of love and joy. And God reigns through it all. A wonderful story that can be read as a stand alone book even though it is involves the Baxter family.
Wow
Interesting read. First if all, I always love KK's writing style, including italicized comments from the Holy Spirit that the character can "hear". Also, she inputs Scripture throughout the storyline.appropriate to the moment. This novel is full of comments the reader can use in witnessing to whomever the Lord sends across the path. And He does do that. KK's many novels I have read have enabled me to minister to many. Back to Someone Like You: the storyline is new to me. Because of that it took me several pages to digest the impact in vitro fertilization may have on the lives of all involved. Emotional adjustment can run the gamut. In the end, God, if allowed, can use it for His purpose. KK has woven this into the storyline masterfully, creating a roller coaster within the reader's emotions. I am blessed to read another of her novels enlightening me on the social issues impacting our lives today.
A book for many people!
This is a book written with God's guidance and love. I never knew much about adoption of embryos, this is talked about here. Who 're really the parents and for heaven's sake tell the child she or he was adopted..This is good for sisters, grieving people, Christians, families and grandparents. I really could not put this book down. I started it yesterday ans finished today. God could speak to many different people thru this book. Thank you for writing it.
I couldn’t put it down!
Karen Kingsberry has long been my favorite author! She had me hooked from the first sentence in “Someone Like You.” I never tell the story in my reviews, but in this book all the characters live and work through real life issues. It is one of those books that you won’t be able to put down. Another good one! Way to go, Karen!
I was sad when it was over
Karen Kingsbury is the BEST writer with the best stories that keep my faith flexing and me inspired! There is always a plot line that is so uncontrived and not your normal formula where you already know the ending! It also makes you think. You know that question people ask? Why do bad things happen to good people? Well, Karen Kingsbury always has a message about how God uses even bad things in His plans. I am a firm believer that we are in a fallen world and that God allows free choice and so we have pain and suffering but He hurts with us and can always make something good come from the worst situations and sometimes the lessons are our blessings. I hate spoilers so I won't even share the story but I must say I was sad when it was over. But in Karen Kingsbury style I am hoping for a sequel to this Baxter Family book. My only request would be more MP3 availability so I can listen to more when I am on my commutes!
Too Much Drama
I enjoy Karen Kingsbury's books but found myself disliking the main character in this novel, based on her actions after finding out about her origins. In addition, I could not buy into the motives or legality of Dawson's plans to find Maddie. Just a bit "stalker creepy" in my book. However, I love the faith and prayer that is so constant and evident in the Baxter clan and their friends, but they seem to get themselves into so many pickles because they react with such insane drama!
A Journey into New Territory
Karen Kingsbury sets a love story with messages of forgiveness and trust into a science setting. Rather than tackling the ethical or technical aspects, Kingsbury accepts it for what it is and deals with the broken relationships in the Baxter family. While it was a page-turner, I kept feeling like important steps in Maddie's journey were missing--that of dealing with the method of her inception and the sense of rejection from her biological parents. Bravo to Kingsbury for setting this story in the emotional desire for a family.

So much potential, but didn't hit the mark
The topic of this book seemed relevant and intriguing to the times, but instead of truly examining the ethical consequences of the introduction of technology to human reproduction, and life saving measures involving organ transplants, it pivoted on a moralistic, Christian-centric view of right to life. The characters were flat and monochromatic, invoking no creative thought on today's issues.
Wonderful Book!
This book was a wonderful read. I couldn't put it down. I love Karen Kingsbury books. The story-line was very different. In some ways, you can guess what is going to happen, but more times than not, the story goes in a completely different direction. It is wonderful to read a book that is Christian based, but goes along with everyday life. I highly recommend this book and all of Karen Kingsbury's books.
Love love loved this book
This book was such a great read. I couldn’t put it down. An the extra last chapter was like the cherry on a sundae. It just felt so good reading it. I have loved every book in the Baxter series an will continue to keep reading every book Karen writes. I’m such a huge fan of her writing. ⭐️ thank you Karen Kingsbury 🙏
I had tears in my eyes when I read this book, so emotional,
Maddie 's adoptive parents should of told her about her being adopted, instead she finds out from a stranger, after hearing about & meeting her biological parents, what a sweet reunion, then giving her mom one of her kidneys, if only she could of met her sister & got to know her. A very good book, I highly recommend it. Karen is an amazing author, I love reading her books.
Someone Like You
Awesome book. I could not tell you how many times I had years in my eyes. At first I was upset that Connor and Maddie broke up, but I understood that Dawson & Maddie really had to be together. The more I read Karen Kingsbury the more I understand God's ways. Thank you again Karen Kingsbury for another wonderful book. I can't wait to read my next book from Karen Kingsbury
Forgiveness frees your spirit....
What a story!!! I am a new found reader because of Karen Kingsbury! I never liked to read until I picked up her novels. This book is no exception! I’ve got to catch up, rather backtrack, and figure out what happened to all the Baxter’s! What an anointed writer! You find faith, family, love, acceptance, understanding, forgiveness......you can see the hand of God move in her books time after time. You won’t be disappointed!
Is there a thing as "too much drama"
Being a Karen Kingsbury fan, I was hoping for another story to draw me in with the Baxter clan. Sadly, this story was so unbelievable and made me a little sad that gives too much drama to something that should be celebrated. Not all stories need to be fantastical and complicated. Real life rarely is and God lives in that life, too.
Truly inspirational story
In this book you will learn about embryo adoption, kidney transplant and how one untold secret can effect a family. When Maddie learns about the secret that her parents kept from her she is angry. Dawson is struggling with a loss when he finds Maddie. Karen will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next.
Same old story plot
As usual same plot type. The Baxter family never moves away from each other. The Baxter kids spouses never visit their families. Everyone cancels plans at the last minute to meet together for a “crisis”. Unbelievable that London accepts Christ after being hit by a car and critically injured! It would be nice if Kingsbury wrote stories with true life consequences - like her first books did. Now she writes books that everything fits together perfectly. Not sure why I even buy her books anymore!
Love this series ready for next book.
I have always loved this series but I sit here crying for Comnor. Her writing is so pleasant I feel I am really there.
not for me
i wish that the preview had mentioned that this was a religous book and that every other word was god or jesus. i wouldnt have bought it if i had known.the storyline was ok but all the characters did was pray all the time.
love and tears
What can I say but that this book is a real blockbuster. It is filled with so much love, a taste of having ones faith shaken a bit and a coming back even stronger that before. Just what I needed to read during this time.
Heart warming story
This was a very heart warming story that I could not put down. The way Karen writes such a story is amazing. I was touched with how the two families were connected and how lives were impacted. I can't wait for the next book.
Faith and prayer
Karen Kingsbury once again brings real life circumstances to reality! My heart ached for Dawson loving London, knowing that the love wasn’t returned, but also knowing that she had accepted Jesus as her savior until the end. The anger and hurt that Maddie feels at the deception her parents hid from her. Another awesome story of how their faith in Jesus and through prayer brought forgiveness and unity. I sympathized with Maddie’s parents the anguish they felt, wanting to tell her and yet not wanting to destroy the very life that she had. A great book!
Life Changing (and well worth the read)
Admittedly, the cover (and even a summary of the selection) can be deceiving, but upon reading this novel you will never regret it. It’s amazing how the author weaves her tale together to make it both believable and palatable.
Love The Book
I love the book and I feel like God had a plan for both of them, his plan always work out for you as long as you love him and belong to him. I get all her books because she belongs to God and I just love her books.
Brilliantly Written
Wow! I really loved this book and all the characters. I smiled all the way through it. I know this is a stand alone book but I hope Karen will change her mind and expand on the relationships . It was fresh and new yet gave a sense of familiarity. Way to go!
Love It!!!
It has been a while since I read one of Kingsbury's novels, but I am beyond glad that I found "Someone Like You". I will be getting caught up on the novels that I have missed. I absolutely 💗 the Baxter Family!
When I started Someone Like You after the first few pages, I was afraid I would not like this reading.
I chose the rating because as usual Karen did not disappoint. This book took me by surprise in that it was not the ending I expected. I thought it would be a happy ever after and it was but it wasn't.
Someone Like You a story of hope
Someone like you is a story of hope, hope in the God who plans things perfectly. My children are adopted, not the same way as in the book, but still, mine by the grace of God. Thank you for a story that reveals that uniqueness.
Great read
I always love Karen Kingsbury
Don’t miss this one!
Karen Kingsbury never fails to warm your heart, bring a tear and give you message from God. This book is no exception. Get your Kleenex and don’t make any other plans. You won’t want to stop til the last page.
A journey that takes your breath away…
This book takes ypu on a journey, experiencing so many emotions and coming through them seeing and feeling emotions through Jesus' eyes. One of the BEST books Ive ever read❣️
Once again
Every book. I have read every book Karen has written, and every one I can’t put down. I pre order them as soon as they come out, and read them the minute they arrive. I ordered this in October of 19, not even knowing it wouldn’t be released until May of 20! The wait was worth its weight in gold. Thank you Karen, for writing life changing books.
Best book ever!
This book deals with issues I never thought about. There is so much passion in how it is written. I felt like I was part of the Baxter family while reading this and felt their heartache as well as their joy. Can't wait for the next book to come out, or the TV series.
Dissappointed
First ever disappointment in a Kingsbury book. Very short and choppy. Book ended at 83% complete and there were pages and pages of space filling names and unnecessary additions. I have always loved her stories and felt so uplifted at the end. After "The end" I just felt annoyed.
Oh so good
Get your tissues ready. Karen out did herself in this book. I cannot believe the depth she went into about the emotions of adoption. It was so good.
Heart-felt Fiction
I always enjoy Karen Kingsbury' s books. This one is no exception. I loved the characters and the life changing story. Add a sweet, clean romance, and it's a winner.
Amazing, as always
I loved this book, as I do all I read from Karen. This book illustrates the devastation of withholding the truth, and the power of forgiveness.

A stunning story of forgiveness and love
The love of family
The excitement for a new release from Karen Kingsbury is like no other experience. You count the days for its release, buy the book, start reading and then finish it in a matter of hours. SOMEONE LIKE YOU was no exception for me. SOMEONE LIKE YOU is a continuing story about the beloved Baxter family, but yet a stand alone where you can read without having read the other books. This book focuses on 22 yr old Maddie West, daughter of Brooke Baxter West and Peter West. Life as Maddie knows it was about to change forever thanks to a stranger who is about to unfold secrets her parents kept from her and the entire Baxter family for since her birth. A truth that will rock her young world. Frozen Embryos? Adoption? Biological parents? A sister? It could not be true. Why would her parents not tell her? In the wake of the truth from her parents, Maddie is beyond confused and angry. And she makes the decision to seek out her biological parents and find her sister across the country in Portland, Oregon. Leaving the comforts of all she has ever known in Bloomington, IN was the only thing she knew to do. But still she wondered was she making the right choice, leaving her job and more importantly her fiancé, Conner Flanigan behind? She had to find out where she belonged and who she was. For she was certain she was not a West. Or a Baxter. Her entire life was all a lie. The stranger, Dawson Gage, is taken aback by the similarities between the girl he has always loved, London Quinn, and her biological sister, Maddie West. But a tragic accident involving London, left him wanting to get to know the sister neither knew existed. But was he doing it all for the wrong reasons? Was he falling for the girl that was someone like her? Like London? With the help of Dawson and the need to forgive, Maddie heads back home to her family, knowing her biological family would always be in her heart. Dawson and Maddie’s faith would lead them on their own journey. Were the meant to be together? Was this God’s plan all along? SOMEONE LIKE YOU is a very emotional journey. Tears will fall as you turn the pages of this book. Karen Kingsbury pulls you right into to this story and you find yourself praying for the right outcome. The messages of love, forgiveness, hope and faith are all within the pages. So get yourself a copy of the book, grab some tissues and I promise you you won’t stop reading until the last page. It’s that good! Highly recommend.
Too Cliche of a Love Story
I generally am a huge Karen Kingsbury fan but this one was a little too "perfect" for me. I like realistic books which is why I have in the past really enjoyed her series. ***Spoiler alert*** It's not the embryo adoption part I didn't enjoy, my family actually does embryo transfer in our cattle program so I understand and accept that process no problem. I actually was really excited for this book because it touched on an issue that has probably not been discussed much before. I just didn't like the love story part. Meeting a handsome stranger who you felt you have "known your whole life" and falling in love and breaking up with your fiance? Just not a fan. I think it's too idealistic a picture of love. Love stays together, not breaks up over a random chance encounter. It's just too cliche for me.
A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME! Preachy, Unrealistic, and DUMB!
WHYYYYYYYYY did I waste the few hours it took to read this book? I am slapping myself silly for reading beyond page 10. I was interested in the concept of embryo transplants, which is the only reason I can give. First, and foremost, this novel should NOT be listed as mainstream women's fiction in reviews. It is meant for people with a sixth grade reading ability who are evangelicals, who spend their days talking to their God or Jesus instead of to human beings in their midst. There were no more than 2 or 3 paragraphs per page without some religious preaching. The book belongs in a "Christian" church library, not as one marketed to women looking for good, catchy, interesting, sophisticated writing with vocabulary beyond what a 12 year old would know. I am not about slutty books at all, but this was so G rated that there were only one for two very chaste kisses towards the end. These were adults. Nothing about it was realistic or believable. I was fuming that the author kept having the main character, Maddie, refer to her parents as her adoptive parents. My husband and I have three children, all adopted in infancy. They are our CHILDREN, not our adopted children. We are their PARENTS, period! I was also quite angry that these parents who were infertile, or so they thought, thus they did embryo transplant, failed to mention that their daughter was not biologically theirs. Maddie was 22 years old, and they still had not bothered to mention it! Who does that??????? Two of my children are Chinese, (we are caucasian). Over the years, there were always those idiots who would ask, "Do they know they are adopted?" I would say, "No. I am telling YOU, a total stranger, but not them." OF COURSE THEY KNEW. I also added each time, "We DO have mirrors in our house, and clearly we are NOT Chinese!" The level of ignorance astounded me then, and angers me now. In this waste of time novel, of course Maddie finds out about the circumstances of her birth, and feels totally betrayed, and rightly so. The plot was so far fetched and ridiculous that it defied credulity. If you like to read for pleasure and to expand your knowledge, look elsewhere. If you want to have someone preach to you about Jesus and miracles, and quite unbelievable scenarios, and if you never got beyond 6th grade, this is the book for you. UGH!
Yet another Baxter book, Is this like number 30 in a series?
Someone Like You is yet another Baxter novel. I think I would have liked the story better had it not been a Baxter novel. Book managed to make me cry within the first quarter of the book. A character dies and you don't really get fully invested in the character but you feel the pain of the character's loved ones who have to say goodbye. All and all it was an enjoyable book but a couple of things bothered me. Book featured Maddie West, daughter of Brooke Baxter West and granddaughter of the Baxter patriach John Baxter. Maddie finds out some news that her parents have kept from her all her life and she is not able to forgive them. I thought she kept unforgiveness in her heart way too long. Sure her parents should have told her but why keep bitterness in your heart that long. Another thing that bothered me was that she got engaged to Connor Flannigan and was so in LOVE with him and quickly fell out of love with him and another boy when she made a visit to Oregon.
A very inspirational book!!
Karen did it again!! I have been at a stalemate with reading these last few months and I picked up Someone Like You to read from my stash of KK books. Maddie is graduating from college and has her dream job waiting for her to work at the Indianapolis Zoo. She is in love with Connor Flannigan and she expects him to propose any day now. Brooke and Peter West have kept a secret from Maddie West since the day she was born. Maddie is adopted. She came from a frozen embryo when that was unheard of in the trial stages. Maddie has a family on the other side of the country that she never knew she had. She has a sister named London. Dawson is in love with London, but London has told Dawson since their senior year not to fall in love with her. When Dawson's world comes crashing down on him, he takes off to Bloomington to find this Maddie West, not realizing that she has no clue that she was adopting. Maddie gets angry and rejects her parents once she finds out the truth and takes off for the west coast to meet the family that she never knew existed. This book was an excellent read for me. I read it in a few days because I was hooked. I really enjoyed this storyline. Maddie has to learn to forgive and realize that her family is her family regardless of who she came from. She has to deal with numerous emotions when she learns she was adopt. She learns what love truly is and how it is supposed to feel. She learns that God will help her through whatever situation she faces and will put people in her life to help with the healing. This book is definitely for anyone that needs a bit of inspiration!!
Waiting for the Right Moment
Welcome back to another riveting Baxter family story. What an emotional rollercoaster ride for Maddie as she suddenly learns the earthshattering truth about her origins! We have all probably struggled at one time or another waiting for just the right moment to share some important information with a much-loved family member, or possibly with a very dear friend. The critical lesson from this story is that we must make the time sooner rather than later. The longer we wait, the easier it becomes to wait for a better time. Information shared at the earliest possible moment typically will be received more easily and is less likely to throw the other party into a major tailspin. If you have read other Baxter family stories, you know what a close-knit family they are. Face it - you may have felt a certain amount of jealousy as you read their stories and joined in vicariously on many of their family get-togethers, possibly wishing your own family was more like this one. You also know that they have gone through many struggles together. From their first story, I have enjoyed reading about John Baxter, the patriarch of the family. Although not a lot is said about him in this story, he plays a very special role. As he has gotten older and retired, he often has been the one the Baxter siblings turn to for counsel and prayer. Now he becomes a man of action for his oldest granddaughter, Maddie.
Uplifting Family Drama
This book made me laugh, cry and everything in between. It is so filled with family drama and the love between family that never lets you go, no matter how much you want to. Maddie finds out that her embryo was adopted, so she sets out to meet her biological parents, leaving her beloved family behind in Indiana. In Portland, she makes several discoveries, not the least of which is meeting Dawson, a young man who had been desperately in love with her biological sister London. Maddie is engaged to Connor so although she is attracted to Dawson, she avoids a relationship with him. My heart strings were pulled throughout this book, as I imagined the anguish of the Baxter family in Indiana and the Quinn family in Portland who are just meeting their biological daughter. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend this totally clean read. I especially enjoyed the fact that the book was replete with up-to-date information about embryo adoption. Karen Kingsbury definitely did her research! Fans of Christian fiction and those who just want to read an uplifting story will want to grab this book and devour it! Disclaimer I purchased an autographed copy of this book from Landmark Booksellers. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.
Christian family drama surrounding embryo adoption
When I first saw the description of the book on NetGalley, I was intrigued by the concept, and also the complications that embryo adoption could present. It is something that may not be apparent to your family and friends, if you didn’t tell them - obviously, the mother was pregnant with a baby living and frowning inside them, so people would definitely not suspect any form of adoption. I have never read one of Karen Kingsbury’s books before, so I was not aware that this book and the characters would be centered around their Christian faith. It didn’t really detract from the story, but there was a lot of focus on it. What I liked most about this book was the exploration of family - both family in the traditional sense and also non-traditional families. What I didn’t like so much was that I didn’t really feel like the relationship between Maddie and Dawson really developed. I don’t think I was really able to “connect” with Maddie. Possibly the very heavy emotional beginning had me connecting with London and her story a bit more... I would recommend this book for someone interested in Christian books, that are centered around family relationships. I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
An amazing story
I’ve been a fan of the Baxter Family series since the very first book was published several years ago. I’ve always appreciated the way that Karen Kingsbury has taken difficult topics and addressed them, through situations in her fictional characters’ lives, in a sensitive, Biblical way. This is a compelling story about a topic to which I’ve never given much thought. The challenges of embryo adoption and the impact on the families involved were new to me. As I followed Maddy’s story, I was surprised at one point about the turn it took. But as with all of this author’s books, I was drawn in from the first chapter and was just a little bit teary when I finished. There’s a strong theme of salvation throughout this book and on witnessing to family and friends about Christ. There’s also a theme of forgiveness, both of forgiving others and forgiving yourself. If this is your first book about the Baxter family, you’ll be able to enjoy it without having read the others. The author includes a good summary/introduction to the family. As always, I’m looking forward to the next book in this series. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Heartbreaking and Hope Filled
Karen Kingsbury has a way of shattering your heart and then somehow neatly putting the pieces back together by books end. She tackles a vast array of unique situations in her faith based Baxter Family series. This book is no different in that regard as it covers the subject of Embryo Adoption. The Baxter’s are my favorite family and it’s always a pleasure to peek into their lives and catch up. In Someone Like You, Maddie, learns that she is adopted, not the biological child of Brooke and Peter. Not adopted in the usual way, but adopted as an embryo. Unfortunately, Maddie finds out from someone else and feels lied to and betrayed by her family. Dawson has just suffered a tremendous loss in his life and he’s determined to let Maddie know about her biological parents. Is he doing it for the right reasons? A story of love, loss, grief, forgiveness and hope, Kingsbury knows how to tug at our heartstrings and keep us coming back for more of the Baxter family❣️Thank you to Simon and Schuster and NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
interesting hot topic
i was going into this book thinking that it was going to be overly pushy about God and Faith. But the author did an amazing job with the story and about the book. all i can say is that when you read this book you are going to need a friend to talk about it and cry with you. it is about a young women that find outs that she was adopted and instead of facing it with her family she leaves everyone and goes to her "real family" it was pretty predictable and the ending was a little interesting in my opinion i was given this ARC by netgalley and publisher for an honest review and opinion
Heart-warming story
This book centers around an adopted frozen embryo. The story dives into the meaning of family. Is family strictly a function of biology or so much more than that? Maddie West must wrestle with this question after finding out the truth about her birth. A heart-warning and faith filled story of love and family. Beautiful book!
Back with the Baxters!
It’s great to touch base with the Baxter family. John Baxter was a joy to meet again. However, I did not care for Maddy. A stranger tells her she was adopted as a frozen embryo. Yes, it would have been better if her parents had told her. Her self-righteous anger didn’t make sense. Had she known, how would she have lived her life differently? Her biological parents had given her away. She was fortunate to be part of a loving family. And the Baxters are huge proponents of adoption. Did she think her adopted cousins were less because of it? Dawson Gage was an interesting character. Once he realized his mistake in going to Indiana, he did his best in guiding Maddy to forgiveness.
Beautiful Story
For me this was a pretty quick read. It was very interesting. This concept of frozen embryos for adoption. I love the heart behind it. They are babies, lives, just waiting to be developed. At first I thought Karen was having Dawson move past London’s death too soon, but she saved that and made it more believable. I honestly found the most moving part of the story the beginning, when London passed. One thing I love about Karen’s book is that she doesn’t shy away from Jesus. He is all over that book and talked about. I love that. This was a beautiful story! A copy of this book was given to me through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
Riveting Read!
I always say each book I read by Karen Kingsbury is her best, but they just keep getting better. So many emotions in this book make for incredible reading. I couldn't put it down until it was finished. Now I can't wait to see what the next installment will bring. Feelings of betrayal, death, grief, a social issue you don't give much thought to, until you actually know someone who has participated in invitro fertilization/frozen embryos, forgiveness and "finding one's self" are huge topics in this book., which I highly recommend. This ARC was provided by the publisher, Atria Books via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
A beautiful story
Wow! I've read many of Karen Kingsbury's books including the whole original Baxter series, a couple times actually, and started it again right before I got approved to review this book. I was so excited so I jumped right on it. I haven't yet read any of the other stand alone Baxter books, but I soon will! I am used to Karen Kingsbury bringing on the emotions in her books. However, I don't believe I've ever started crying so soon in any of her other books and kept on crying straight through. She really knows how to connect you to her characters and keeps you emotionally attached. So much so I forget they are fictional characters and find myself wondering how they are doing, when they don't actually exist! This story is so different from many that I have read. On a fairly new topic. I really enjoyed how she brought this story to life. It is so beautifully presented and as always Karen Kingsbury pours out the truth of Jesus so masterfully. If you love Karen Kingsbury books, this one will not disappoint. If you have never read any of her books, this one would be a great one to start with! Be sure to have a box of tissues and be prepared to want to read more and more. I will dread the day that Karen Kingsbury writes her last book! I don't ever want them to end! Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and Karen Kingsbury for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Lacked substance, but overall a good book.
This is the 30th book in the Baxter series from author Karen Kingsbury. I haven't read all the books in the series, but was able to still pick this book up with little to no confusion on past characters. The storyline of a frozen embryo adoption and how the secrets kept surrounding the adoption have affected the families was intriguing enough for me to continue the book. Like other readers, there were some parts of this book that had too many unexplained holes or unrealistic situations that left me with questions. I wish there was more substance to the plot, but since I am such a fan of the author, I still enjoyed the book. Thank you NetGalley and publishers for the advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review of the book.
Wholesome
Someone Like You is a very wholesome book. I've never read the author's other books about the Baxter family, but this novel is a stand alone read. The first part is very sad. London Quinn died after a tragic accident. Her parents had given away three frozen embryos who ended up in pediatric couple Brooke and Peter Baxter. Maddie was the lone embryo who was born. When she discovers the true story she runs to Oregon to meet her birth parents. The story is fairly predictable from there. The plot is entirely plausible with modern science, if not something that would headline in contemporary society. Thanks to NetGalley and Atria for the advance read in exchange for my honest review.
Amazing!
I received an ARC copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. It was wonderful to read another book by this author. It was a great read and I so enjoy reading about the Baxter family. I honestly missed many books recently but will definitely go back and read them. What I love most about this author is that even though this follows the storyline of one family, you can read each one as a standalone. Karen Kingsbury has a way of having so many characters in one book but not making it confusing and not being repetitive. I love how she is telling stories of Christian men and women and the real struggles we all go through. Amazing read!
Emotional
An emotional story for fans of the Baxters. This book can be read as a stand-alone but reveals just enough background to make readers want to read previous books in the series. Honest conversations about closely guarded secrets are discussed in a helpful way. God's ever presence in our daily lives and decisions is emphasized. The story was a little predictable but is well worth a read. Recommended!
Good Arc
I volunteered to read this book through netgalley, in exchange for an honest review. It is well written and the characters are described well. You guys Karen Kingsbury has done it again. Her writing style is incredible. She makes you feel like you are the characters, that you are reading about. I absolutely enjoy her books. This pacing of this story is good. You feel like you are the characters. It talks about embryo adoption. It is a interesting form of adoption. This is such a good book. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. This book is in stores now for $35.00 (CAD).
Loving, emotional and educational couldn't put it down!
An awesome book! Karen Kingsbury blew this book out of the water. It's educational on embryo adoption, emotional and a wonderful love story. I have never cried so hard reading a book like I did with Someone like you. Whew! I love Maddie and Dawson they and their love story will stay with me forever. When I got to the end I didn't want it to end. I hope Karen continues their love story with a future book. I definitely recommend this book for everyone it will touch you in some way. Thank you Karen Kingsbury for this informative and heartwarming story.
A MUST Read - the fruits of the spirit all in one amazing story!
I can't even begin to describe how much Someone Like You hits home for me! After years of heartbreak, miscarriages, failed IUIs trying and prayer, our family started with IVF. The first cycle was successful and resulted in six embryos. Two were implanted (and my church group prayed over me for sticky babies) and resulted in the birth of our oldest son, Hayden (now 10). A few years later, we did a frozen embryo transfer (FET) and transferred two embryos. This resulted in the birth of our boy/girl twins (Dawson & Ansley, now 7). I had a hard pregnancy, but through skilled doctors and, of course, the miracles of God, our preemies (born at 33 weeks 5 days gestation) and I survived. The doctor told me being pregnant again would most likely result in the death of me or the baby(ies). We had two embryos left. Our children are proof that life begins at conception (see the picture of them as 5 day old embryos and at 6 weeks gestation). We prayed and God gave us overwhelming peace to donate the two remaining embryos to an anonymous couple whose last chance at having a family was through embryo donation. All the clinic told us was that one embryo made it through the thaw and resulted in a live birth. It's done like a closed adoption. We are open & willing to one day meeting our precious biological child... if not on Earth, then we will be reunited in Heaven with the babies we lost and the one born to another mom & dad. Thank you for tackling and writing so eloquently about such a tough subject! God knows His plans for us... and they are magnificent!
Thought provoking book
What would you do if your discovered that your parents had kept something from you all your life? Would you just accept it and go on with your life? Or would you feel like you had been betrayed? That is the question that Maddie West must deal with just as she is graduating college and has landed her dream job. Did I mention she also just became engaged?! This story will bring out a lot of emotions as you read about Maddie's journey to her "new normal". Another great book from Kingsbury and it is nice to "see" the Baxter family again!
Baxter Family series
Someone Like You is the next book in the Baxter Family series by Karen Kingsbury. Maddie Baxter West has it all, a great family, just graduated college with her dream job lined up and engagement to her high school when her world is completely flipped by someone she thinks could be a stalker. I enjoyed reading this story. There is enough realism in the book to make it plausible but as always, it has a pretty predictable ending. Thank you Net Galley for the opportunity to review this book for my honest opinion.
loved it
I always love my Baxters and their adventures. This story had me sobbing - fair warning. Embryo adoption. Something most people don’t even know exists. A lovely twist on the adoption theme. This book covered so many topics: loss, trust, faith, family. The kidney disease because of too many over the counter pain medications was a really piece in this book. I’ve never heard of that before. I loved the reference to the childhood story we learned about in the new Finding Home book.
It will make you think.
I received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review. Another wonderful book by Karen Kingsbury that made me think about things, made me cry and sometimes got me caught up in the moment. I also did some praying right along with them. Here it is 3::16 AM and I am still thinking about what I read and thinking about what I would have done. I honestly don't know but I could see where God was testing the people in the story and I could also see God working to put the people in the places they needed to be.
Read this - you will see God on every page
An amazing story, complex & in-depth. The ending was predictable, but the road to that conclusion was certainly not predictable. After "watching" Maddie West grow up, her world (and mine) is turned upside down, in a way that only God could use for His good. This is a story that will stay with anyone who has been impacted by the death of a loved one, but also for those who grapple with thoughts that adoption makes them less of a family member. A must read for all.
I loved it 🙂
Let me just say that I loved it ! 🙂 I’ve been waiting for this book to come out for a while. I had a hard time putting it down. I look forward to more Karen kingsbury books. I haven’t read the redemption series or the sunset series or the firstborn series or the bailey flannigan series but I do heartily enjoy the stand alone books. I was sorry about Maddie and Connor ( I do hope we get a follow up with him at some point ). I am looking forward to see what happens with Maddie and Dawson 🙂 I don’t think u have to read the previous series to read this. But u can if u want the extra history of the characters. But I do recommend reading the stand alone ones. Anyways it was an awesome story and can’t wait for the next one
Engaging & Inspirational!
Loved reading the amazing and engaging Christian romance story. After the love of Dawson's life, London, dies, he feels the need to inform Maddie about her biological sister passing away. When Maddie finds out she was adopted as an embryo, she leaves her parents and fiance' and goes to Portland where her biological parents and Dawson live. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written with captivating characters, and an inspirational story line.
