Solid advice
Read this book at the advice of a fellow medical student as residency auditions/interviews were coming up. So I came at it more from the residency application perspective than medical student. I applied the principles in this book and felt I did a great job during my audition rotations and in my interviews. I landed my number one choice in residency and was told by one of my senior residents that I was ranked really high by them. Dr. Goldberg's advice is pretty spot on and gave me a way to frame every interaction I had to work to my benefit in a way that felt natural. It helped me feel more confident, which is what matters most. I'd recommend this book to anyone applying to med school and to residency. It's a pretty inexpensive book as well, so you really can't go wrong here. Good luck out there, applicants!
Excellent advice book for high school and young college students thinking about applying to medical school
As a college freshman I recommend this book to any young college student or high school student considering medical school. The author gives advice on what actions a student can take to maximize their med school application’s attraction to an admissions officer. This guide will encourage any prospective student to laser in on exactly on what medical schools want to see, without being “distracted” by other parts of a college experience. In addition to advice on what type of college might be best, what type of classes to take, the book also gives good insight into what extracurriculars the student should spend their time on; what would be most helpful in putting down on your application’s personal statement and what could be helpful to talk about in your interviews. This book is really for kids early on in their academic careers.
The only resource you need to make your medical school application competitve
UPDATE: I applied to 13 medical schools. I got interview invitations to 11 of the 13 and accepted at all of the schools I scheduled interviews with. I feel the information contained in this book was a major component to my success. In simple terms, if you want to get accepted into medical school buy and use this book! This is a must read for anyone applying to medical school. I read it and used it extensively while completing my AMCAS application and preparing for interviews. This book is straight to the point in a clear and concise manner with many real examples. I do not know how anyone could make their application competitive without the information contained in this book. I was so impressed, I contacted the author for help with my personal statement and interview preparation. If you are serious about getting into medical school, BUY THIS BOOK! I had purchased 'So, You Want to Be a ...
I had purchased 'So, You Want to Be a Physician' for my child when she started applying to medical schools. She was successful in getting admission to medical school with the material and guidance given in the book. Pre-medical students carry an inordinate amount of academic load to meet the medschool course prerequisites. The extra curricular activities place even greater demand on their time. The application process itself can be the proverbial 'last straw that breaks the camel's back.' The book offers focused, relevant information thus making it easier for the students to separate the essentials from nice-to-have and effectively manage the application process.
who obviously has great insight into the admissions process in this field
This book is worth it's weight in Gold. (A nudge to Dr. Goldberg, the author, who obviously has great insight into the admissions process in this field.) Oftentimes, books of this nature come off as almost lecture-like. While reading this, I felt I got an insider's view of what it takes to not only apply for, but also to prepare for life as a med student. You will find clear cut examples of how the interview process goes, with tips on what will get you an edge on the competition. Reading this book gave me a sense of what I should put an emphasis on, and also what to omit from my personal statement. The 'Goldberg Method', aka the interview process, is a must read for all prospective medical professionals. His principals apply across the board, so once you're done with this book, share it with any friend or family member with a forthcoming job interview. Now sleep while you can. You won't be perusing Amazon reviews once you're a resident!
Amazing book!
After reading Dr. Goldberg's book I felt that I had a better understanding about the process of going through medical school and applying for a residency. As students, we receive a ton of advice from either senior students or alumni, but this book provides detailed information of what to expect as we progress in our careers. The most influential aspect of his book was the section about how prospective students need to tackle the interview process. We are only given a small window to make a good impression on residency directors and this books provides various methods to not only answer the question presented, but help you stand out as a candidate. I would recommend this book to any student thinking about going into the medical profession and the earlier one reads it the more informed that person will be in his or her decision.
A must read for anyone considering the medical field or healthcare
I am glad that I was able to read this book, even though I had already been accepted into medical school. I was introduced to Mr. Goldberg very late in the game; the day I was to leave on a flight to Arizona for a school interview in fact. We had been corresponding via email during the week prior working on the answers to the three most frequently asked questions - as stated in this book - and worked very quickly to perfect my materials and then meet the day of to practice my interviewing skills. Even though I had never been in an interview before, Mr. Goldberg allayed many of my concerns and sources of self-consciousness, but also raised awareness to areas of improvement that I had not even considered. That was by far the most impactful aspect of working with him. If I had access to a book such as this in high school, I know that I would have done several things differently. Even though I would have achieved the same end, I realize now just how lucky I am to have been accepted. I had good grades, but not stellar; I had a slightly-below-average MCAT score; I had no medical research (only psychological) and no direct clinical experience. However I did have three majors, several honors societies, honors and scolarships, athletics, an internship, volunteer service (with a hospital and in a shelter for battered women) and I presented well. I am an outlier and likely not a good exemplar for the best path to take, however it can be done. This book is very succinct, direct and short, yet covers the entire journey from the first desire to be a physician (or other healthcare worker) all the way through residency at the end of medical school and can easily be read in a day or two. It is engaging and therefore I recommend that all people considering these professions should read this early on to receive the most benefit. Working with Mr. Goldberg directly was a boon not only to my professionalism, but also to my self-esteem. He was the first experience that I had with the interviewing process and, as previously mentioned, alleviated much of the self-doubt that I had. He takes matters seriously and is a successful man with likely very little time to give, yet he made me feel important in the time that he set aside for me. The biggest advice I could give is to take matters seriously. Treat school, interviews and your future goals as matters requiring precision and effort, but be flexible. Have humility and recognize that there is always room for improvement. I feel that every young person should have the opportunity to practice interviewing before they apply for schools, jobs, or anything else. I am greatful that I was able to practice with a man like Mr. Goldberg.
Great and helpfull ! Thanks!
I recently purchased this book for my nephew who is a pre-med senior at Ohio State University. Not only was I attracted by the positive reviews of other readers, but I felt that the content was key to helping my nephew in areas such as the personal statement and interview, which are topics rarely covered in these types of books. My nephew has been very pleased with the book , and said that it has provided him with solid insight into the process of constructing a strong personal statement, and he appreciated the real-life examples in the book. As a professional, I know that the process of applying to postgraduate programs can be grueling, and the interviews are often key in getting a step ahead. Etiquette is important, but smooth delivery and heartfelt, smart responses are key. This book helps prepare students by giving them many examples of questions that have been asked when interviewing for medical school. I may have purchased the book for my nephew but I strongly feel that the methodology is this book can be applied to those applying for any graduate school. "So you want to be a Physician" is definitely a 5 star read.
Extremely Useful Medical School Application Guide and Easy to Read
I didn’t know what to expect when I ordered the book titled, “So You Want to Be a Physician . . .” My niece had applied to medical school a year earlier, but did not receive any interviews despite a 3.9 GPA from an excellent undergraduate school and what we thought was a good enough MCAT score. She applied again the following year – this year. This time we used the book to help us better understand the process and as a resource. I got a lot out of the book and she feels that applying the guidance in the book has been extremely helpful. She is interviewing now and, hopefully, can get in this year. The writing was down-to-earth and helped us understand the practical process steps needed to work through the application process. Reading about what to expect during the interviewing process has also allowed me to help my niece prepare. This book should be in every college career office in the country. I only regret not having purchased the book earlier. Simply excellent!
TOP CHOICE - FIRST STEP for starting any healthcare professional career!
Dear Reader: So, You Want To Be A Physician: Getting the Edge in the Pursuit of Becoming a Physician or Other Medical Professional by Edward M. Goldberg is the book to have on your side, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to join the medical profession. I know the author so I bought the book and got started reading. Yes, I had preconceived notions about the book; the book would read like a manual, robotic, mundane but thorough. How else could a book about getting into medical school be? I was a little taken aback by the cover drawing. It reminded me of primer out of the sixties with the hairstyles updated. I couldn’t have been more wrong. There are several things that strike me as I read this book: 1. This book is an easy read, concise and to the point. 2. This book is focused on the topic and keeps you there. 3. This book has good and bad examples of essays about who you are, your interest in the field, and your choice of schools. 4. This book is methodical and covers all the bases. 5. This book tells you that you can succeed as a healthcare professional because all the tools are in these 115 pages. I have known the author, Ed Goldberg, for 30 years and worked with him during the chunk of time when he was a psychiatric hospital and services administer which was between his years of his inception as a hospital administrator in Florida to his most recent administrative gig at St Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, IL. So, it came as no surprised to hear that he wrote a book. Interestingly, it wasn’t; How to Become a Hospital Administrator. I worked for Ed as a psychiatric and mental health nurse, starting as a unit head nurse and moving into the Director of Quality Improvement. As the DQI, I coordinated all the medical staff committees, which entailed working with each physician group to address the specific standards of compliance, and move the hospital forward to improve patient care and appropriate utilization in a significantly changing healthcare climate. I think I know a little bit about the workings of a hospital and it’s medical staff. But what I really learned, I learned from Ed. I can thank Ed for my professional evolution. He made me a better business writer and nurtured my abilities to assess and evaluate any difficult situation to a positive conclusion. He was my mentor and I still call him for advice or to check in. He trusted me to do the job and with his full confidence, I am the health care professional and the writer today because of him. He is a man with foresight and vision and everyone is invited. The physician is always, I mean always comes first and that is why he could write this book. He knows the profession. It has been his job for his some 40 years to facilitate the work, the care, and the business. He endeared himself to everyone and even when he was a bit of a pain, he was all the more lovable. But I digress. I can hear Ed’s voice clearly in his writing; his candidness, putting it out there in simple terms, and his belief that you can do anything you set your mind to. These three traits may describe the man but they also describe this book. Ed gives you the pieces needed to getting into medical school. You just have to put the them together. This book is methodical and thoughtful and I was surprised that someone could take such a stark and sometimes dull and mechanical subject and turn it into a passion. And that’s how Ed lives his life. Ed knows about physicians because he realized the importance of their role in finding answers to our difficult problems - our health. Knowing his perspective, this book will help you get into medical school or any healthcare profession you may be considering including veterinary medicine, advance practice nursing, dentistry and so on. So, You Want To Be A Physician: Getting the Edge in the Pursuit of Becoming a Physician or Other Medical Professional not only gives you the right questions to ask yourself in assessing your own passion for becoming a healthcare professional but gives you the tools to finding the right answers to your true calling. This book is individualized for the reader. It speaks to everyone regardless of your professional focus. I recommended this book to my 21-year-old son before he applied to graduate school. Although in a different field (Environmental Sciences), he was accepted to the Masters of Science program in Environmental Justice at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. This book gets 5 stars – you can’t get any better than So, You Want To Be A Physician: Getting the Edge in the Pursuit of Becoming a Physician or Other Medical Professional. Sincerely, Robin Bruscato

A must read for aspiring Physicians
I’ have been a healthcare leader for over 30 years and have met many great physicians and health cares leaders. I know the author of this book, Mr. Goldberg, personally. He is recognized to be one of the best hospital leaders and his positive relationships with employees and physicians is legendary. Although I bought the book for my son, I reviewed it and found it to be well written in an honest and straightforward manner. It lays out a process and specific examples of positive and negative personal statements and responses to possible interview questions. I am honored to say Mr Goldberg is a legend in healthcare. I would highly recommend this book to those individuals thinking about applying for a healthcare position. Five stars.
So useful!!!!
Applying to medical schools is a long daunting process but I am so glad to have stumbled upon this incredible book as a guide. A year prior to reading this book, I had applied to medical schools but had only gotten rejections. When I decided to re-apply, I found out about this book and it was a complete game changer! This book really lays out the whole application process in a no- nonsense and easy to read fashion. It helped me recognize flaws and deficits within my application and it gave great interview tips. This time around I was able to get 6 interviews and was accepted to 4 schools, including my top choice! I went into my interviews feeling confident and prepared. If you’re a pre-med student, this book will undoubtedly help you become a stronger applicant. I can’t recommend it enough!
So, You Want to be a Physician, is a Terrific Resource and Guide!!
Both my wife and I have been in healthcare for a number of years. Myself for approximately 30 years and for the past ten in commercial real estate and my wife, Robin, has remained in healthcare in information systems/medical records for 40 years. We bought the book because we knew the author and had worked for him and thought it would be interesting. Having worked with Mr. Goldberg, we could actually hear his voice through the pages. Many of his management philosophies actually transferred to the teaching of students to become able to better prepare for being a physician, dentist, veterinarian, physician assistant or nurse practitioner. Both my wife and I interview individuals for positions and we thought the glossary of over seven pages of questions asked of medical and professional school applicants taken from Mr. Goldberg’s prior students were actually often used in interviewing for other healthcare positions and in the commercial real estate world. We would not hesitate to recommend to anyone interested in the healthcare profession or other professions that have to interview for a job to buy Mr. Goldberg’s book. Sincerely, Robin and Steven Chess
Essential reading!
This book is an invaluable resource for anyone considering a career as a physician. Not only is the information applicable to the process of admission, the same strategies are pertinent when applying to residency programs. In short, this should be the first book you reach for when thinking about medical school and kept on your bookshelf for reference for the duration of the journey! His book succinctly captures the same no-nonsense approach Mr. Goldberg utilizes when personally coaching candidates, offering helpful guidance in how to present your “best self” through your personal statement and the interview process. From the list of typical questions asked during interviews to the personal statement examples and the comments he shares, Mr. Goldberg provides candidates with the tools to enhance their success. As one who had the opportunity to work with Mr. Goldberg in preparation for my medical school interviews, I can attest to the wisdom of the counsel he imparts. As I am now a 4th year medical student preparing residency applications and anticipating upcoming interviews, a review of the book reinforces those strategies that were instrumental during the medical school interview process. This is a book you will want to purchase well before you begin applying to medical school, as Mr. Goldberg’s insights are integral to the process! Liam CCOM 2015
This book is a must read if you are applying to medical school or a residency program...
If you are struggling with whether or not medicine is right for you, or have known your entire life that you wanted to become a physician, the first thing to do is take a realistic look at what it takes to get there and what the job of becoming a physician is actually like. Many factors must be considered when making the decision. Do you have the right personality to be a physician? Do you have the perseverance to complete the training? Do you have the ability to get good grades? Are you a good test taker? Is your personal statement one that separates you from equally talented applicants? Do you know what to expect during the interview process? Are you willing to make the necessary sacrifices to get through medical school and residency? And finally, do you have a strong desire to help people? All kinds of people - from lawyers to indigents, grandparents to babies. Mr. Goldberg’s book will help answer these questions for you. His pragmatic approach is easy to read and understand with specific examples made available for the reader to gain the edge in the competitive process of becoming a physician. Mr. Goldberg adds humor throughout the seriousness of his counsel, an attribute that proves useful in any pursuit in life. I especially liked the example of the student determined to become a dermatologist, whose father was close to the author, but who refused help till after several disappointments turned to Mr. Goldberg for assistance. The story has a happy ending with the student gaining admittance to a dermatology residency program with the invaluable assistance of Mr. Goldberg. There are many other success stories used as examples and yours could be one as well with the help of this excellent book.
I Was So Lucky To Find This Book!
I was so lucky to find this book as our son, the chemistry major, is hoping to make application next year to medical school. I've never had a child go through that process and to have Mr. Goldberg share his perspective as an industry executive has been a great support. My son has read the book, too, and agrees that it is both valuable and well written. Since buying this, I have bought a couple of extra volumes for other families. The process to make it to medical school is grueling on many levels. It is nice to have the guidance that this book provides from someone with the expertise to write it. After reading this book, I have fewer fears about the upcoming process which I hope will end up being a positive one for my son.
If you are going to read just one book on the topic...
...this is the one. As a physician, a battle-scarred veteran of the application and interview process, and as a regular participant in interviewing young applicants for my alma mater, I found the insights and clearly worded guidance in this book exceptional. The author has tremendous practical knowledge of the challenges involved in navigating the long path travelled in becoming a physician. He expresses his message clearly, with humor, and without sugar-coating. The chapters begin with concise examinations of important questions that every potential physician should face before even considering taking this road, and then head off into nuts and bolts explanations of each step that an applicant must take in preparing for and taking the journey. The appendices containing real life examples of personal statements, interview questions, and common errors made in these responses are particularly helpful, and demonstrative of the deep practical experience that the author has gained in helping dozens of successful medical school and residency applicants. Medicine is not only not for everyone, it is only for a few. Mr. Goldberg advises potential physicians on how to get there, but also takes the very useful and honest step of advising those who should not embark on this quest. In all honesty, far more people belong to this latter group than to the smaller group who will succeed. They too can benefit from this book, not only because it may save them from fruitless effort and disappointment, but also because it can help them to understand that there are other, potentially more productive choices for an individual with compassion and determination who wants to make a career of helping others in the world of health care. This is an exceptional book from a real world health care professional who knows doctors, who knows the game, and who communicates with clarity and kindness. A treasure.
Invaluable advice from a reliable source
Achieving one's lifelong career goals can be difficult enough without the anxiety generated by worrying if you are on the right path or by trying to navigate the complexities of a professional school admissions process. In this easily readable book Edward Goldberg draws on his nearly forty years of experience in healthcare to provide a brief but thorough reference for those interested in not only becoming a physician but also for those interested in many of the other career opportunities available in the healthcare fields. The advice in this book comes from an individual who knows whereof he speaks. In his vast experience as a hospital administrator Mr Goldberg has befriended health professionals at all levels. He has generously given personal and professional advice to doctors, nurses and hospital employees. It is a very natural transition for him to extend his observations and expertise to those wishing to enter healthcare fields. Most importantly Mr. Goldberg has kept pace with the myriad changes that have affected healthcare training as well as the delivery of services. His broad view of current trends in education, professional opportunity, subspecialization, finance ,healthcare policy and the personal demands of each field can help students maximize their ability to define and ultimately achieve their career goals. This book belongs in the library of every high school or college guidance counselor as well as on the shelf of those preparing for a career as a medical professional.
EXCELLENT! (Very helpful, even though I don't want to be a physician.)
"So, You Want to Be a Physician..." was enormously helpful in providing insight into what interviewers (at medical schools and other institutions) regularly see and hear when interviewing candidates for a coveted position at a medical, dental or other professional school or alternatively, with a prospective employer. It was very helpful to be placed in the shoes of the interviewer. I am not interested in becoming a physician; instead, I read it to improve my interviewing skills and feel very satisfied that it delivered the "edge" that the title promises. That said, had this book existed (and had I read this book) when I was in college, I might have ended up being a physician. (I love the analogy that a medical school candidate's application is "like a hotel....") Bottom line: Excellent value. Many, many excellent insights in an easy-to-read presentation. Highly recommended!
I went on to have a wonderful four-year experience and matched at my first choice of ...
I believe that my acceptance into medical school was due, in large part, to the mentoring I received from Mr. Goldberg. Having the academic credentials to qualify for med school is just the starting point of a long, arduous process. Having no physicians in the family, I had no idea what to expect from the application process, which resulted in a number of esteem-crushing rejections. A family friend introduced me to Mr. Goldberg, who understood what I was going through, and although we had never met before, he agreed to help me achieve my dream. As the president/CEO of a hospital, his candid advice and familiarity with the expectations of medical school admission was invaluable. His interviewing technique advice helped me ace my third and last interview, where I was eventually accepted. This is why I believe strongly in Mr. Goldberg's mentorship. I went on to have a wonderful four-year experience and matched at my first choice of residency programs in neurology. Thank you to Mr. Goldberg for helping me achieve my goal.
Buy this book before you apply/interview
I have been a general Internist for over 35 years, and had the pleasure of working with Edward Goldberg for 18 of those years when he served as CEO of St. Alexius Medical Center. I retired about 18 months after he did, but he was probably one of 25 administrators who I worked with throughout my career. Mr. Goldberg was passionate about being physician and employee-friendly in everything he did. Mr. Goldberg was always the first one in and the last one out, and many times he would be coaching aspiring Medical School students after hours. He had an interesting teaching manner, in which he would work with the students on several interview questions that prior students had been asked, and have them write a script that they felt comfortable with, and then practice it, including eye contact and posture. As I used to walk by his office on my way home, I saw how much he cared for his students success, the same as he did his employees and physicians. Many of his students were sons or daughters of physicians on the medical staff or employees of the hospital. After I retired, I bought a copy of the book, and could actually hear Mr. Goldberg’s voice through the pages. Mr. Goldberg sheds light on many of the issues facing physicians, but most importantly focuses on those students in High School or college who have a good shot at getting into Medical School, and then making sure they have the best possible personal statement and interview that shows the Medical School the very best components the applicants have to offer. I would highly recommend this to anyone considering applying to any of the healthcare professions.
This book will make your application stick out in the crowd!!!!
Words cannot express my endless gratitude for the hard work of Mr. Goldberg and his commitment toward creating future medical professionals. I was lucky enough to personally work with Mr. Goldberg on my interview preparation for dental school, and his new book "So, You Want to be a Physician" captures his mind of valuable information conveniently in a book! Coming from a family without dentists, I really didn't know the whole process of applying to dental school. Fortunately, Mr. Goldberg's book includes valuable and concise information to get ahead of the application process. He successfully does this by providing abundant sample interview questions, personal statements, rules for proper interview etiquette, and tactfully outlining the essential "insides scoops." His experience and knowledge in the medical field ensures an advantage in the interview competition! As a fourth year dental student, I recommend this book to everyone who has an interest in entering the medical professional world. "So You Want to be a Physician" captures Mr. Goldberg's genuine interest and desire to see pre-professional students take their dreams to the next level. Such an enjoyable read that'll definitely highlight your application amongst the others!
Great Resource for Med School Prep!
I enjoyed reading this book, as I am a college student preparing for medical school. However, I can't help but notice the promotion of Mr. Goldberg's services throughout the book. I feel that the comments he adds about his services somewhat detract from the book. This book definitely offers some great advice and helpful pointers, but I thinks it's also very important to base your preparation off several resources, and not just one book. All in all, this book is a great resource for med school prep!
More prepared
I have been an ONC nurse for 5 years and have wanted to transition to the role of nurse practitioner. With the recommendation from some of the hospitals physicians I purchased the book. The areas of the book that I found most helpful were preparing for interviews along with the typical and atypical interview questions that maybe asked. His booked has helped to make me more prepared and will make me more comfortable when the time comes to apply for the next step in my career.

The book is a great read, easy to understand and easy to put his advice into your vision, and a written plan into practice. but it also gave me an insight on how my future interviews will be like when I apply for residency programs
During the early phases of my application cycle to D.O. schools, I was skeptical that I would even get an interview. With uncompetitive stats, I thought that my dreams of becoming a physician went down the drain. However, miraculously I managed to get an interview to a D.O. school. Mr. Goldberg's book, "So, You Want to Be a Physician" not only was informative and spot on about the interview process, but it also gave me an insight on how my future interviews will be like when I apply for residency programs. If you think you are prepared for your interview, think again! Mr. Goldberg's book gives you numerous tips on what to do and what not to do during your interview, and it even gives you several different questions on what interviewers might ask you! Having read Mr. Goldberg's book, I was extremely confident going into my interview and I am extremely grateful to know that despite my uncompetitive stats going into the application process, I rocked my interview and got in! Thanks so much Ed Goldberg! -Roelle Eugenio
A Must Read For All Students Thinking About Applying For Advanced Health Profession Degrees
I have been in the Healthcare industry for over 33 years. Ed Goldberg was my initial healthcare employer from 1982 to 1984. His guidance and mentoring, during those formative years, prepared me, as a healthcare executive, better than any formal training prior to and after that time that I spent working with him. He is a rock star, in our industry, and his passion to pass down knowledge to the next generation of healthcare professionals is second to none. His attention to detail and his understanding of what it takes to be successful is clearly evident in this book. I believe his lessons to those applying for medical school, dental school, etc., can also be applied to all individuals seeking health professions, from physicians to healthcare executives. Everyone seeking an advanced health profession degree should buy this book and follow Ed Goldberg's recipe for success!
Mr. Goldberg's book is a recipe for success.
As a physician, I have known Mr. Goldberg both personally and professionally for years. I have watched him become one of the utmost authorities on gaining entrance into medical school. What started as a hobby became a true passion. Thus it was a no-brainer when it came time for my son to apply for a residency program and my daughter to apply for medical school. They both met with Mr. Goldberg for coaching tips along the way. His advice was always spot on and definitely helped them achieve their professional goals. Now with this guide he has created a literal blueprint of how to get into medical school for all to see. Mr. Goldberg's book is a recipe for success.
This book helped me get into a highly competitive NP program
As a successful undergraduate psychology major and author of multiple publications, I decided to become a nurse practitioner. I took a clinical position in order to get direct patient care experience along with my research. Mr. Goldberg’s book was incredibly helpful when I was writing my essays and preparing for my interviews. Although the book was written for medical school admissions, I found it to be very applicable to admissions for nurse practitioner programs as well. Following the guidelines in the book made all the difference, and helped me reach my goal to become a nurse practitioner. I highly recommend this book to anyone applying to healthcare professions!
Great guidance--helped me feel confident and prepared
This book was a great help throughout the application process, from the personal statement to interview questions. There are so many example prompts for each type of question, which was exactly what I wanted out of a prep book. The interview/MMI preparation sections were especially helpful in guiding me through the kinds of questions I should anticipate being asked. I would recommend this book highly to anyone feeling overwhelmed by the application process--it definitely helped me feel much more confident and prepared!

A Must Read For Anyone Entering The Medical Field
Ed Goldberg is the "Master of Healthcare", training so many leaders over his illustrious career, including me. I first met Ed over 25 years ago in Miami when I was an Assistant Administrator working for a CEO who was one of his highly successful prodigies. I eventually had the opportunity to train directly under Ed in Chicago the early 1990's. Ed is a skilled and tremendous mentor who has been the leader I have strived to be over my career. His insight into the ever evolving world of healthcare is unparalleled. Ed has now shared his expertise and knowledge with the world through his book "So You Want To Be A Physician". His understanding of the "big picture" in the evolving world of healthcare provides a practical understanding and approach to anyone who is considering entering the world of medicine. Ed is my mentor and a leader who has impacted the lives of so many healthcare leaders. The book is a must read with a five star rating!
Recommended Reading For Medical School Admission Applicants and Non-Medical School Admission Applicants
It is obvious that, leading hospital industry expert, author Edward M. Goldberg’s book: “So You Want To Be A Physician ...” is a highly valuable ‘How To’ guide for medical school admission applicants. After all, it is based on the many success stories of his clients’ medical school admission acceptances. What is less obvious is that this book also offers extremely useful and practical advice to non-medical school applicants as well, particularly in featuring the universal ‘Do’s and Don’t’s’ of the interview process. Therefore, this book is recommended reading for all students seeking acceptance in both medical and non-medical schools. The prescribed interviewing methods and techniques in the book will improve student preparation for this critical stage of their professional development while, most importantly, increase the likelihood of these students earning school admission acceptance.
Book Review from the Registered Nurse's Perspective
I found Mr. Goldberg's book to be highly informative, concise, and very useful. Although it is written with the aspiring medical student's perspective as focus, I found it very useful for interviewing needs anywhere in the health and medical setting. I have served in Colorado as an RN. for 28 years, having worked in the ICU, chronic and acute dialysis, at a large state run facility for the profoundly developmentally disabled, and at a busy Hospice Care Center. I also was the west slope Regional Organ Recovery Coordinator for 7 years. All these positions require excellent interviewing skills, which are found in this book. The author's knowledge base is obviously deep. The book is practical and very helpful. I have already recommended it to more than a few new nursing school grads, as a smart tool for preparation and confidence building when applying for a job. Well worth the price of purchase. 5 Stars.
A Must Read Book
A must read book! After reading Ed Goldberg's book, I was struck by the very specific suggestions he offered to help students understand and follow the specific process they need to follow to get into med school. However , Ed goes one step further, emphasizing the importance of the student's personal presentation during the interview as well as his ability to communicate his achievements and accomplishments. A knockout combination! Ed Goldberg is uniquely qualified to tutor aspiring medical students, having worked in many diverse medical situations. He is highly knowledgable, articulate and has a keen, irrepressible sense of humor. He is generous in sharing his experiences and has had a great deal of success in preparing students for a successful future.
Great book for medical college application process.
I had purchased 'So, You Want to Be a Physician' for my son. He is a high school Junior and is very much interested to pursue the BA/MD combined program. This book is very helpful in giving us many of the techniques we can employ in the application process. I am very new to the US education system and don't know all the nuances which go with the college application process. This was an eye-opener and has given me and my son a path forward in how to go about his college applications.
Mr. Goldberg's book is the key to successful and enlighening future as a physician
I have know Ed Goldberg for many years from working with him and as a friend. His mentoring of me during those years made me a much more intuitive Healthcare Professional and better person. His knowledge of the how healthcare works and more importantly how to treat people to be both successful and more importantly in providing excellent patient care is unsurpassed. I would highly recommend any individual who is interested in pursuing a career as a physician read his book. The medical delivery system has changed drastically in the past year with new regulations, more red tape, and changes in the way that care is to be delivered to the patients. His insight on what a person should consider before going in that direction would greatly assist in answering many of those questions. It is time and money well spent. You will be a better more informed person for it. Elmer Cummings, CFO
Wonderful Book. Sound Advice.
I rarely leave reviews for products purchased on this site, but feel this book truly deserves my seal of approval. My daughter has dreamed of being a doctor since she was knee high to a grasshopper. She has worked so hard to maintain good grades, combining her studies with extracurricular activities. As she nears her college years, we have been thinking of what would give her the edge on getting into med school. On a whim, we bought this book. We are so very glad we did. We have learned so much, and use the advice given to carve the path to our daughter's entry to her dream profession. It is a very well written book, and worth every penny of the $22 paid. as been an invaluable resource as we carve

common sense info , nothing new
not what i expected, everybody knows the information content, not useful at all.
Very Key information in a simple book.
As a pre-med student or one thinking of pursuing medicine, this book provides great insight on what medical schools value and how to ultimately stand out and be in a position to become a successful physician.
Straightforward and informative--fulfilled all expectations
My daughter is a university senior who is determined to associate her future career with medicine. As her mother, I was having trouble to stay on the same page with her as she was trying to describe her educational timeline leading her up to admission to medical school. This book covered all of my questions, providing a detailed but still focused guideline as of what to expect and how to put your priorities during this journey. I would definitely recommend this book for all parents who want to have a clear understanding of what their kids are going through and are willing to support them in this competitive journey without actually feeling blindfolded.
This is a great resource to reference during the application process from college ...
This is a great resource to reference during the application process from college all the way through obtaining a position as an attending physician. I found the sample personal statements extremely helpful as this is always one of the most challenging aspects of the application. This book also provides great examples of responses to the three questions that I was asked on almost every interview to medical school and residency, as well as responses to some tough ethical questions regarding the medical field that everyone is afraid to answer. It is organized in a way that it is easy to use as a spot reference and concise enough that you could read it cover to cover before starting the application process. I'll be holding on to this book to reference until I retire!
Very informative
I worked for Ed Goldberg in the early 80’s for approximately nine years as one of his secretaries. Ed is the type of person some people can only wish for when hoping to get a good boss so when I learned that my friend's son was seriously considering becoming a physician, I had to get a copy of his book because I knew the amazing caliber of person the author is. Ed’s book is informative and thorough, easy to understand and includes specific examples. Ed has many years of experience in the healthcare field so I trust everything he says with regard to his knowledge of the healthcare world. I would not hesitate to recommend this book to anyone interested in a healthcare profession, or for that matter, anyone having to interview for a job. Debbie Jamison
One great book and it is written by a great coach.
As an internist practicing for 33 years, I have four children all coached by Mr. Goldberg for their personal statements, applications and interviews. My oldest son is beginning his 4th year of his ENT residency program, my second son is in his 3rd year of medical school and my other two children are starting medical school in the fall. Mr. Goldberg's assistance has been invaluable. His no-nonsense, sometimes brutally honest approach, and his philosophy of "practice, practice, practice" ensures that the student has the very best opportunity to present to the medical school who he/she really is. If you are serious about becoming a doctor, you should buy Mr. Goldberg's book and utilize his coaching services. sincerely, Warren Pierce MD
They all claim his advice was perfect especially when it came to improving their interview skills
I have four children one of which is in medical school and two of which are in dental school. All three read Mr. Goldberg's book So, You Want to be a Physician. They all claim his advice was perfect especially when it came to improving their interview skills. I would recommend this book to any person interested in being admitted to a professional school. Don't show up at an interview without Mr. Goldberg's thoughts on how to present yourself and speak. This book is worth it's weight in gold for someone who has invested four years in pre-medical/dental undergraduate studies. My fourth child wants to go to dental school. He will read this book before he applies. Jim
Straight to the point
Clear and concise, straight to the point. This book inspired my thoughts of what to include in my personal statement, I marked up the pages with my pen. It's a short but informative read. I was interested in his services after reading his book and he was very honest in the process and what needs to be done.
Excellent resource for anyone in the interviewing process
I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Goldberg for many years. This book is an excellent reference for anyone interviewing, both medical students and other healthcare professionals, like myself. Mr. Goldberg's passion about helping others achieve their best is demonstrated in his realistic and real life questions and examples throughout the book. Personally, it helped me consider what questions and interviewing skills would be important to rejoin the workforce. Mr. Goldberg's expertise in understanding physicians and the necessary interviewing skills to gain a competitive advantage throughout the interview process is presented in a meaningful and easy read format. Highly recommend this book to anyone.
Excellent resource for improving medical school applications and interviews
From firsthand experience, I know this book will make a difference for anyone trying to get into medical school. I went through the application process a few years ago and met with Mr. Goldberg prior to my interviews. His advice and help preparing me was invaluable. He knows the interview questions that are asked and, more importantly, he knows how those questions need to be answered. This book is full of examples of successful personal statements and answers to interview questions. It is extremely useful as a source for ideas and will make the application process much easier. I plan on using this as a source when I go through this process again when applying for residency. -Brian McGuire
Fantastic book!
This book should be read by anyone who is attempting to enter the healthcare field! Mr. Goldberg provides invaluable information for students navigating the maze of admission processes. The detail the book goes into along with clearly defined plans will certainly assist applicants. Fantastic book!

This is one of the best books to reference if you are planning on attending medical school. It contains great advice on the whole admissions process which could really benefit a student who is stressed out about getting into a medical school. I will surely recommend this book to anyone I know who is planning on entering the medical field.
... breaks things down in an informative but realistic and easy to read format
I have been in the healthcare industry for over 30 years and I have never read a book with this such insight that breaks things down in an informative but realistic and easy to read format. After reading this book i have bought a few additional copies to pass on to individuals who have expressed interest in presuing a carreer in the healthcare field. I hope there is a second book in which i could read some of the other thought provoking perspective from Mr. Goldberg. Certainly a must read book!!!!
Worth it for anyone trying to get into medical school.
This book has been invaluable in my journey into medical school. It provides a lot of insight from someone that has been intimately involved in the application process over many years. I don't think I would be where I am today without Mr. Goldberg's advice!
Must have for all prospective medical students and residents
This book is a must read for all prospective medical students and residents prior to interviews. It gives great examples to the majority of questions one sees in an interview. It also gives a lot of what not to do during an interview, which is just as important I was fortunate enough to work with Mr. Goldberg prior to interviewing for my pediatric residency. After practicing with Mr. Goldberg, I felt more confident going into each one of my interviews and found that I had practiced every question that I was asked. With his help I was able to match into my number 1 choice. Again, everyone should read this book prior to interviewing.
Okay Book
This book isn't bad, but I've read similar books that I personally think are far more comprehensive for a smaller price tag. He makes very good points about the interview process, although some of the examples he uses from students are a bit lackluster. Book is pretty short, and large chunks tend to be used up by filler material (potential interview questions, student statements, and testimonials come to mind). Overall this book feels rushed and I wouldn't recommend it.
A Quick Read With Lots of Valuable Information
This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn the most successful process to get into a healthcare related school or career. Ed provides easy to understand advice that will help you with the personal statement and your interview. The book includes many real life examples of what others have done - to stimulate your own thought process. Even if you don't want to get into a Medical or Dental School the book provides great suggestions for anyone who is going through an interview process. I enjoyed the book completely and will share it with others.
Getting an Edge
I was looking for a book to give my nephew who is applying to medical schools. . I can assure you that after perusing several books, it was an easy choice to pick Mr Goldberg's book. I found his approach to be informative, concise and well written. I personally have been in sales for over 40 years and there are many points he makes that can transfer over to those interviewing for sales or marketing jobs as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to succeed in not only getting that acceptance letter but success in life. Bob Aronson

Mr. Goldberg's book is an excellent resource for those wanting to pursue a career in medicine. He has helped countless individuals achieve their goals with his expertise. His book is well-organized, easy to read, and breaks down the application process in a way that is not overwhelming for the reader. After working with him to improve my own interviewing technique and personal statement, I was accepted to medical school and am now entering into my fourth year. I will be sure to use the advice in his book to be as competitive as possible on residency applications.
Simply Stellar!
Ed Goldberg nails the main points. Everything he says can be easily understood and applied. The fact that he can take a topic so important, not to mention intimidating; and turn it into something everybody can read mesmerizes me. This book provided me the confidence and closure I've needed to understand what it takes to go through the process of applying for medical school/residency resonates with me on only a familiar level. His emphasis on the things most other authors overlook provides a completely unique set of guidelines for the process. Thank you Mr. Goldberg, please keep writing.
This will get you into medical school
One month after reading this book I was accepted into medical school. I had the unique opportunity to go through the coaching and tutoring before the book was completed and I can now look at the book as a rationale for the way the coaching occurred. I had applied and interviewed at several medical schools resulting in no acceptance. One month after coaching with Mr. Goldberg, I was accepted into medical school. His style is direct, clear and not excessively verbose. This book is the perfect gift for anyone thinking about a career as a primary medical provider. This book will save you time and money!
Follow this advice if you want to maximize your chances of going to medical school
This insightful, innovative, and candid approach to getting into medical school is delivered in a way only Ed Goldberg can do. Ed has made a career of making hospitals successful, and now offers his invaluable advice to prospective medical school students. This book contains sound well reasoned advice, not magic. It will require work, time and effort. If you are willing to do it, you SHOULD be successful. If you can't get in following Ed's advice, medicine is really not your best career choice.
Great resource
This book and Mr. Goldberg were extremely helpful. There was valuable insight for the process of applying to medical school and what is required to be a competitive applicant. I would highly recommend this book to any student that is interested in a medical career. I also had the opportunity to speak with the author, Mr. Edward Goldberg, and felt he was honest while also directing me in what to do next in my application process. Mr. Goldberg and this book are why I was accepted into medical school!
This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in a career in a medical field! I had the pleasure to work with Mr. Goldberg personally before this book was published and I can say, unequivocally, that his guidance made the difference in my medical school application. Before working with Mr. Goldberg I had applied to medical school twice and had never been invited for an interview. After working with Mr. Goldberg to revise my personal statement and strengthen my application I was invited to the earliest round of interviews. Before my interview, Mr. Goldberg worked tirelessly with me to ensure that I was both well prepared and absolutely confident. I left my interview knowing that I had done my absolute best and less than a month later I was admitted to the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Currently I am starting my second year of medical school at the University of Illinois and look forward to working with Mr. Goldberg again when applying for residency. This book contains all of the essential advice that Mr. Goldberg gave me during the time we worked together. My personal statement has even been included as an example in this book. Mr. Goldberg has created an excellent resource for applicants to the medical field that provides invaluable tools, tips, and tricks grounded in years of experience.
Extremely valuable book
Reading this book has been extremely beneficial to me in my journey towards applying to medical school. Mr. Goldberg lays everything out in a simple and straightforward manner that is easy to understand but that is rare to find anywhere else. I would recommend this book to anyone considering going into the health professions field, even high school students. Particularly, the personal statements from students who were accepted into medical school was my favorite aspect since they are real life examples of what actually worked. Definitely worth a read!

Ed Goldberg's "So You Want to Be a Physician"
Ed Goldberg’s book was well-written and matter of fact. My son read his book and was accepted to a top Prep School in the fall. He attributed his success to Ed’s ideas, suggestions and inspiration. It also encouraged him to be more active within the community. Ed’s reputation within the healthcare industry is remarkable. He tells it like it is, and has helped many ambitious young adults discover an academic program right for them. This book will help any student on a path to success. I highly recommend reading this one!
Insightful!
All advice should be listened to. It is your job to discern good from bad, but without even a little experience, it is hard to separate what is noteworthly and what is deficient of substance. As someone who is as established in healthcare as Mr. Goldberg, he honestly provides great insight into the process with a clear and concise approach. And not just for medical application, much of the information here could be carried over to other applications that require an interview process. A great way to sharpen all interview skills!
This book an excellent resource for anyone interested in becoming a doctor
I am a clinical social worker with over thirty years of experience working with physicians in a variety of health care settings. This book an excellent resource for anyone interested in becoming a doctor. I plan to utilize the interview tips once I am done with school!
Recent Dental School Applicant
What I liked most about this book was the stories of successful applicants vs unsuccessful applicants. It goes into depth about personal statement strategies, tips about interviewing including what to wear and how to conduct yourself, and even talking on the phone with admission committee members. In this book, I found information about what admissions committees look for in an applicant that I couldn't find anywhere else. This book definitely helped me get into dental school... highly recommended!!!

Mr. Goldberg has provided an excellent road map for an individual that is interested in becoming a physician. He brings all the key components together..beginning with the application, interview process and finally residency. It is thorough and specific in what is needed to be successful. Also these techniques can be used for other careers, i.e. Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners. Easy to read and understand, if followed there is no doubt the applicant will be successful. Very helpful and informative.
Great Book
I bought this book for my daughter because we don’t have any relatives that are physicians and she read the book followed it and found the book very helpful to get her to the medical school.
Read this book!
Insightful book that is invaluable for anyone who wishes to enter the medical field. A plethora of information that is helpful for gaining acceptances to BS/MD programs, medical schools, residencies, etc. Mr. Goldberg's book and his coaching helped me strengthen my skills and gave me the confidence I needed for the interview season. His straightforward approach for nailing the interview really works. A pleasure to work with, he will help you succeed!
Very useful book
I’m a PhD in psychology, but bought this book for a friend who wants to go to medical school. As a psychologist, I can tell you that this book was very thorough, and I felt that it provided exceptional information for students who are on their path to become a physician or other health professional. Highly recommended!
A Great Book by Edward M. Goldberg
I have been involved in the healthcare business for the past 40 years and found “So you want to be a physician” by Edward M. Goldberg to be informative, entertaining and thorough. It is very much on target and a must read for individuals seeking admission to medical school. Goldberg’s references to interviewing skills and techniques will help both the aspiring medical student along with the seasoned healthcare professional. A great book by Goldberg! Al Senter
So, You Want to be A Physician
I have worked in hospital administration for 29 years. I have never read a more thorough and practical guide on the subject of gaining admission to medical school. Mr. Goldberg's insights into the process are apparent and the material is easily understood. Well done ! A must read for students seeking a career as a physician.
So, You Want to Be a Physician: Getting an Edge in your Pursuit of the...
After reading the book, I clearly see the values of seeking assistance from Mr. Goldberg to prepare for the medical professional school interviewing process. However, if Mr. Goldberg is not available; the next best thing is reading the entire book over and over again until one has internalized the content and able to apply the techniques learned. This book clearly is a road map, written in an easy to understand format and is powerful in its contents. Although the title of this book addressed "getting the edge in the pursuit of becoming a physician or other medical professional", it can also be adopted and expanded to be used for other career interviews. I also found examples listed in chapter 8 and the "Personal Statement example for Residency" application extremely valuable. Dominic Woo 8-9-2013

This book is spot on as to navigating the complicated landscape of applying to medical school. We personally have 2 friends who have had their children benefit from the expertise of Mr. Goldberg. I only wish that this was available when I was applied to medical school.
A must for teens or young adults determined to become a physician.
Mr Goldberg's book is a concise and practical gem, ideal for young people considering a career in medicine. But this book is a must for the motivated youth, determined to do what it takes to secure the medical training they need to fulfill their dream. I have been a physician for over 30 years and often get requests for advice or help in getting into medical school. Now I know what to tell them---buy this book!
Outstanding Book of Its Type
As a practicing Urologist, I have many students rotating through my practice, and patients wo approach me and ask how to become a physician. I always refer them to the book, "So You Want To Be a Physician" by Edward M. Goldberg. It clearly sets out the expectations of not only getting into Medical School, but Dental School, Veterinary School, and Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant programs, and talks about the key elements of preparing a personal statement and provides specific examples of good and bad personal statements. Additionally, the book sets up the student to be able to prepare for the interview with specific, concrete examples. Of all the students who I have suggested purchase the book, two have done so, and have been very pleased with the results. I only wish they had a book of this nature when I was applying to Medical School. Geoffery Engel, M.D..

My older daughter bought the first book and had Mr. Goldberg as a coach and was accepted into five of her six medical school program applied to. I bought the updated new book for my younger daughter and was surprised that in such a short of time there are even more challenges to get into medical school.
Highly recommend!
I bought this book for my niece who wants to be a doctor. It was incredibly helpful, and I would recommend it to anyone who needs to write a personal statement or have an interview for a physician, dentist, veterinarian, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner.
Father's Day Giving Recommendation
Ed has not only counseled hundreds of young people successfully in their career preparation but has written a thoughtful book to help those who do not personally know him. His sage advice helps people decide if medicine is the career for them as well as the "how to's" to be accepted. I recommend this to Dad's and Mom's who want to help their children have a better shot fulfilling their dreams.
Excellent Book
Reading this book prior to my medical interview has been extremely useful to me .I am in the 6 year BS/MD program and faced the interview with confidence after reading this book.Mr. Goldberg lays everything out in a simple and straightforward manner and takes away the pressure of facing the medical interview. I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering to be a physician. I would give this book a high five.
Helped me get into Dermatology Residency
Great book, great author! Mr. Goldberg does a wonderful job of summarizing his experiences in advising students of all ages in this guide. He delves into his unique vantage point and provides the reader with great tips and lessons. I can't thank Mr. Goldberg enough. Without his guidance and sincere interest, I wouldn't be where I am today.
I was aspiring admission to competitive direct admission medical programs ...
I was aspiring admission to competitive direct admission medical programs from high school. With the help of Mr. Goldberg, I was able to achieve my goal. He taught me how to highlight my abilities, spirit and commitment to medicine at a conversational yet professional level. Anyone who is pursuing medicine, no matter what step of the way, should read this book!
Helpful book! Enjoyed it!
Mr. Goldberg's book was great and extremely helpful in getting me into medical school in the US. There is plenty of helpful advice and strong tips to help one through the entire application process. I found the interview sample questions particularly helpful in helping me prepare. I would recommend this book to anyone out there looking to apply to either allopathic or osteopathic medical schools.
Not a good book at all
This book is not very comprehensive. Some section such as other careers in medicine only have 1 page.
Best book available in market for Pre-Med and Pre-Dental.. and also Postgraduate.
Mr. Goldberg, thank you for this book. After reading this, I have a better idea about medical profession and application process. But the most major help was your chapter regarding Interview, I am planning on using those skills I read in your book in all my future interview. Thanks for passing on the knowledge. - Ritesh J Mehta
For dentists also!
This is not only a primer for getting into medical school. This also wonderful for dental school as well. Wish I had this book years ago when I applied to dental school John A. Rothchild, DDS,FAGD,MAGD,DAAPM,NMD,IMD
A must read for all pre-med/pre-dental/pre-graduate students
Mr. Goldberg is the interview expert. I trust everything he says without question, and I have found success with every lesson he has taught me. This book is a wonderful strategy to build a strong interview foundation. You are able to prepare yourself to avoid common pitfalls of many students and learn how to turn every negative/weakness into a strength. After reading the book and taking Mr. Goldberg's guidance to heart, you will be confident and able to put your best foot forward in any interview situation.
Excellent book- great advice!
This is an excellent book. I have spent a great deal of my time interviewing physicians throughout my career and the same questions that are asked by the medical schools are the same questions they will face down the road when interviewing for their first job. Great job as always, Ed. You can't find anyone in healthcare that knows physicians better than you.
How to use medical school admission process to your advantage!
This is a very useful book. I counsel students who want to be doctors. This is a very competitive process!!! By reading the book they will learn how to understand this process and will be at a great advantage over students who have not read the book!
Excellent Resource
Mr. Goldberg is extremely knowledgable of the topic of medical school and residency admissions. I recently matched into my top choice for residency, and I am sure that the assistance Mr. Goldberg provided to me was vital to my success. This book would certainly be an excellent resource for any student interested in pursuing a career in medicine.
A Must Read For Aspiring Medical Students
Mr. Goldberg's book establishes him as the go-to person for individuals serious about a career in medicine. Using his unique voice, Goldberg is engaging, informative, enlightening, and entertaining. This book is a must read for anyone wishing to go to medical school. I highly recommend it.
Awesome Advice!
An excellent source of information for gaining knowledge on how to become a physician. Mr. Goldberg gives great insight based on his experience and others he has helped. I plan on apply these theories for my on son.
This book was very easy to read and contains valuable information
I ordered this book for my high schooler. It was worth every penny! This book was very easy to read and contains valuable information. I highly recommend this book for any parent and child who is interested in the medical field. I read a few similar books but this book is by far the best. Thank you Mr. Ed Goldberg!
So You Want to Be a Pre-Med Counselor: Set your own fees & avoid malpractice insurance
This book is nothing other than an expanded pamphlet advertising the services of the author, Dr. Goldberg. I cannot imagine what, if anything, the stellar reviews indicate other than that they have been written by satisfied customers of the author. There is no information contained in this "book" pertaining to a future in medicine other than that other vocational options are available for people holding MD degrees -- namely, setting up a business counseling potential MD's. Avoid unless you are looking for a counselor and want to read rave testimonials about the author.
Packed with great ideas
This book has numerous great ideas.Very practical!! This writer is right on the money!I wish I had had the book when I applied for medical school!!
Great find! -Chris Johns
I found this book helpful for anyone looking for career advancement. The book is written with clear, down to earth advise and terminology. I have used the advise in "reverse" as I interview candidates for entry positions in my organization. Great find! -Chris Johns, VP, CQO, Quality and Patient Safety
Must read for those wishing to pursue a career in medicine
o Very informative o Great interviewing insights and tips o Essential preparation for anyone wishing to pursue a career in medicine or advanced healthcare, written by one of the best and most innovative healthcare administrators of our time.
Five Stars
Excellent info!
The Title Speaks for Itself!
I have been a PCT and had wanted to transition to a nurse practitioner. I bought this book and found it very helpful to prepare for my interview.
Required reading for medical school applicants
An incredibly well written review of winning strategies for individuals who want to gain admission to a medical school. The annecdotal examples provide a clear path to make you look and sound better than the competition. Well worth every cent.
Universal topic
This is a fast read with a lot of opportunity to learn. Its examples are specific to the medical profession but the underlying principles are universal. Anyone looking to start , or change, a career will benefit from giving it a read and keeping it as a reference guide.
The Lower Star Reviews Have Merit
I am very new to the steps to become a doctor and sought out books that could be of some help. I bought this book because it had a five star rating. The higher rated comments suggested that the book was quite informative. I did not find the book to be informative. The information was generic, most of the contents I had already known due to a quick Google search. As reported by another reviewer the chapters are short, often being of a single page that doesn't properly address the question layed out in the title. I don't recommend this book. The lower star reviews are accurate descriptions of the book. I highly recommend "How to Be Pre-Med: A Harvard MD's Medical School Preparation Guide for Students and Parents". That book is way more in depth about the process to becoming a Doctor.
To get the best value out of this book
To get the best value out of this book, you need to purchase it as you enter your undergraduate studies. I bought this during the beginning of my senior year and the only use was the interview questions.
Great book!
Very clear and helpful strategies. Previous essay questions and examples were also helpful. Highly recommended.
Great Read!
This information was spot on. Really liked the specific details that were provided for the interview techniques and personal statements.
It has examples of amazing personal statements
This book is very helpful to anyone who wishes to be a physician. It has examples of amazing personal statements, which serve as a great guide to our children for when they are writing their personal statement. For those of you who are planning to go into direct med, or even the traditional path, Edward Goldberg's tips for interviews will greatly help. These tips immensely prepare students to the best of their abilities, giving them the confidence they need to enhance their interviewing skills. This book is a great source for anyone planning to enter the medical profession. I strongly encourage it!
Mr. Goldberg helped me hone my interview skills for non-medical field employment
I had the privilege of working with Mr. Goldberg as an interview adviser while I was preparing for job interviews outside. My educational background is in the humanities and I work outside of the medical field. Mr. Goldberg's prep methods gave me the ability to feel at ease in an interview setting and taught me the skills to prepare for interviews on my own. His methods changed my presence at job interviews from awkward to calm and collected and had a direct influence on my ability to successfully interview.
Required reading!
After reading this book I ordered a copy for my grandson immediately. Packed with practical advice and insights, Mr. Goldberg's book should be on the shelf of every college guidance counselor in the country.
Mr Goldberg, you are a god
Mr Goldberg. I just want to thank you for guiding me and helping me. I got accepted to medical school. Your book was so insightful, well written and informative. YOU ARE A GOD!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS AGAIN
I love this book
I love this book!! It is insightful and up lifting. I would recommend this book for anyone you is in the medical field or thinking of a career in healthcare.
Five Stars
Excellent and well organized book
Must Read
As a past CEO of several healthcare companies and currently President of a healthcare technology company, I highly recommend the reading of this most informative and constructive book.
I highly recommend it.
This book is written with humor and gives you strategies that will help interviewing for any field you are looking to enter, not just the medical field. I highly recommend it.
Save Your Money
The chapter regarding interview questions was worth a read, but otherwise I would suggest saving your money by using a search engine to find answers to your questions. Most of the "chapters" were a total of 1 to 2 pages of information that is readily available on the internet. I found this book to be way overpriced for the content.
Ed Goldberg cuts through the red tape of Medical School Preparation
Ed Goldberg is a treasure to young adults working on medical school preparation courses, applications, and interviewing. His book is timely, accurate, and very useful.
Five Stars
Invaluable guide when applying to medical school. A must read!
If you only buy one med school prep book…this is it.
Thanks Mr. Goldberg for sharing your expertise. We so appreciate your straight forward tell it like it is style. This book would be helpful for anyone even thinking about applying to medical school. I wish we would have bought So You Want To Be a Physician years ago.
I enjoyed the humor
The book was clear and concise. I enjoyed the humor. The book gave me some good insight. 5 Stars....
Great information, but could be lengthier
Good information, but it definitely could be longer. I read the whole thing in about 30 minutes.
Five Stars
I just bought this book and can't wait to read it
Five Stars
I would recommend this book to any student that is interested in a medical career.
A Must-Read for Anyone Applying to Medical School
Like the author, I first became pressed into service as an admissions coach involuntarily. In my case, my college roommate needed help with his personal statement for medical school. The outcome was positive and for the past several decades, I've been involved in admissions coaching, along a broad spectrum. On the basis of my 30-plus years of experience in admissions coaching, I recognize this book as a goldmine of information for applicants to medical school (as well as a fascinating read for anyone with an interest in the process of medical school admissions). What's exemplary about this book is that it covers all the bases, offering ample "inside information" in a way that is insightful, straightforward and enjoyable to read. Simply stated, the author gives readers the inside scoop on what to do to increase chances of admission. There is information you might expect and there is also a good deal of information that you might not expect, such as these two insights about extracurricular activities: "[I]f [applicants] took all the time they spent on their extracurricular activities and channeled that time into either studying to get better grades or taking a Kaplan course or individual tutoring for a better MCAT score, they would be much better off" (chapter 3). "Although most parents feel that volunteering in a hospital is a meaningful experience, and will help their children get into medical school, I don't believe that this is valid anymore. I believe the new gold standard for activities that will help applicants get into medical school is, first and foremost, research" (in chapter 6). The section on preparing for interviews is absolutely invaluable and not just for applicants to medical school, as illustrated by this brief excerpt: "I explain to students that when they say, 'Well actually ... To be honest with you ... To tell you the truth,' that actually means that everything they've said before that was a lie" (chapter 8). The book actually goes beyond the aspect of applying to medical school, also covering application to residency programs and alternatives to US medical schools (including other health-care tracks). I found the highly informative material on personal statements of particular interest, as that has been a focus of my own activities over the years. Mr. Goldberg gives examples of statements and, more importantly, sample critiques that show how these statements could be improved. In short, this book is so comprehensive and the material is of such high value that it is truly a must-read for anyone interested in applying to medical school. I will be recommending this book and referring to it myself for many years to come.
Never read a book that gives so much practical, detailed advice as this one does - outstanding!
Do you have a child, other family member, or a friend or a friend's child who is seeking to get into medical school? If so, please be certain to obtain the best book I've ever read on the subject: "So, You Want to be a Physician" by Edward M. Goldberg. This is not a a philosophical tome or a collection of generalities and inspirational stories. It is a no-nonsense, fact-filled "how to" best position oneself to win acceptance to medical school or a desired residency program. The book is filled with specific actions to take, including details on exactly what to say in critical interviews. Writing this book led Mr. Goldberg to translate his knowledge into a professional coaching career. He has helped hundreds of aspiring physicians to get into medical school, I highly recommend this book.
Helped My Daughter Prepare for Med School
It's not often that one finds a "manual" on how to get an edge on getting into Med school. But Mr. Goldberg has written a student guide that is as informative and practical as it is entertaining. A long time hospital administrator, Mr. Goldberg has his finger on the pulse when it comes to knowing what Med schools are looking for in a student and how to be better prepared for not just the Med school exams but also the grueling interview process. Using first hand knowledge garnered from doctors, hospitals, and Universitys, Mr. Goldberg offers the prospective student a blueprint of how to navigate the entire admissions process for getting into Med School. Mr. Goldberg's book should be required reading for every high school or college student thinking about a medical career. And it should be on the desk of every career counselor at every undergraduate school in America.
Great example interview questions and sample personal statements!
This book helped me prepare and preform well in the most important parts of my medical school application process. The book provides countless interview questions and personal statement excerpts from real students who have gone through the application process. These examples really helped me understand what medical schools are looking for in a student and how to highlight my passion and accomplishments on paper and in person. Mr. Goldberg provides dozens of interview questions that I would tediously look over and many of them were asked in my own interviews. Because I had previous exposure to some of my interview questions, I was able to calmly give complete and thorough answers. Mr. Goldberg also provides interview questions regarding ethics in medicine. These especially helped give me an advantage in some of my group interviews when people were unprepared or uncomfortable talking about controversial topics. The personal statement excerpts served as inspiration for me when I was struggling to find where my passion for medicine was rooted and the excerpts gave me insight into how high of caliber my own writing needed to be inorder to be a competitive candidate. I was accepted into medical school and I owe a tremendous thank you to this book. The insight Mr. Goldberg has into the medical field and medical school application process is astounding and I highly recommend getting his book and utilizing his knowledge and advice.
So, You Want to Be a Physician - Review From a Student
Applying to medical school is a daunting task. Before reading So, You Want to Be a Physician I was lost as to how to best portray myself in not only a written format but also in a face to face meeting. This book was imperative to the success I had completing an articulate and concise personal statement as well as preparing myself for my medical school interviews. With respect to writing my personal statement this manual on medical school admissions helped me focus my personal achievements and character traits into a written format that identified best with the values of the medical schools I was interested in. Specifically, the examples given in the book were extremely useful for understanding how to sculpt a positive image of myself and, equally important, how not to do it. When it came time to prepare for the actual interview this guide was irreplaceable. He has portrayed the interview process as a science: If you follow his advice, you WILL succeed in the interview. One of the greatest benefits I reaped from the readings was the advice on how to steer the conversation I had with the interview in the manner which made me look like a great candidate for their program. Perhaps most importantly, the advice contained in these pages helped me with something I personally struggled with the most: transforming the inner passion and drive I have for becoming a physician into a verbal and kinetic expression of that passion. Yes it even covers body language and appendage movements. This book is a MUST buy for anyone thinking of even starting the application process for medical schools as it provides a no-nonsense portrait of the application process and gives step-by-step advice on how to successfully traverse the journey, and it is a journey, of medical school applications. This coupled with the provided examples made my life much easier. The lessons taught in So, You Want to Be a Physician are great and will be useful when it comes time for me to apply to residencies as well and could certainly be applied to having a successful interview process in any field, let alone medicine. Sincerely, Jared
Overall Helpful, Especially for Interview Preparation
I found this book to be an immense help when applying to medical school this year (2018); it was given to me as a gift. I used it to gut-check my approach to my personal statement, but mostly used it for interview practice. The questions Mr. Goldberg lists as examples proved useful and relevant. I know I'll be reopening this book when preparing for residency applications in a few years. If you're like me and away from your undergraduate institution, this book can provide the voice of an advisor to help understand the application process.
I am going medical school because of Mr. Goldberg's help!
I am a hard working, high achieving senior in High School, and my parents saw Mr. Goldberg’s website about helping students to prepare for Medical School interviews. My parents and I agreed that this was my weakest area, as I am both quiet and shy, and do better when I have time to think questions out, i.e. submitting a paper, rather than answering questions verbally. First, I read Mr. Goldberg’s book, which was a big help and made the time I spent with him on the phone more meaningful. We developed draft responses to several of the customary questions that are asked of Medical School students, as I applied to five BS/MD or BS/DO programs. We went back and forth by email until we were both satisfied with the questions, and then we began rehearsing. When we were done with the initial questions, Mr. Goldberg added some more, but he was concerned I would not be able to respond appropriately to rapid-fire questions. We then developed a different list of random questions that I did not memorize, but that I simply responded to. As I got better and better and more articulate and forceful in my speaking, I gained more confidence, which in turn led to a much better presentation. After I was accepted to my first program, both my self-esteem and confidence were even more enhanced, and I was accepted into all of the programs to which I applied. I chose a wonderful school who provided me with a full-tuition scholarship. There is no question that Mr. Goldberg was extremely instrumental in my success, and I would highly recommend him to any individuals needing help in developing their personal statement and for coaching for Medical School interviews.
If you want to maximize your chances of getting into medical school, I strongly recommend you read this book!
I came to Mr. Goldberg my junior year of high school looking to get advice on how to get into the 7/8 year BS/MD Programs. With my strong grades and ACT scores, I had a decent chance at these programs. However, after my meeting with Mr. Goldberg, I realized there were some key aspects of my application that I needed to improve. So I took a copy of this book home and began to read through it. The methodical and practical approach Mr. Goldberg takes is extremely valuable. As many know, the medical admissions world is convoluted and frustrating. However, Mr. Goldberg's book provided the clarity I needed to maximize my potential. I section I found especially useful was the "Previous Interview Questions Section" to be priceless. During the interview season, I could not be separated from this book: I poured over each and every question and it helped me tremendously. For starters, many questions I had prepared for from this book came up during the interview! In addition, knowing what type of questions were going to be asked gave me the extra confidence and ease of mind to walk into each interview looking to knock it out of the park! I can confidently say that I would not be a part of the Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwestern University/Feinberg School of Medicine without the help of Ed Goldberg and this book.
If you or anyone you know has any interest in becoming a physician, vet, dentist, nurse, etc., READ THIS BOOK!
I have known Ed Goldberg for approx. 40 years, the first 10 or 15 while I was a radiologist at a hospital in Coral Gables, Fl., where Ed was the administrator. He has "lived" the Healthcare industry all his life, and knows all the twists, turns, secrets, etc. of hospitals, doctors, nurses, etc. To say he's a workaholic is an understatement. He was a hands-on administrator, and would spend nearly all of his waking hours at the hospital. He made it a point to know all the people associated with the hospital, from the doctors to the janitors---I'd never seen an administrator so admired and loved. In addition to his vast knowledge of the health field, he's got a wonderful(and often sarcastic) sense of humor, which will become obvious when you read his book. As you will also discover, he's a great story teller. His book represents a lifetime of knowledge that he's happy to share---from deciding if working in healthcare is something you'd like, what steps you should take in preparation, how to handle yourself at an interview(including what you might be asked, etc. Prior to writing his book, Ed has counseled hundreds(formally and informally) of young potential applicants, and all of them have said his advice "had made a significant impact" in their decisions and successes. Morty Blumberg(retired radiologist)
A must have!
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone considering health care. As a senior student at UIC, most of the time I am left overwhelmed by trying to cover everything that is "expected" from a pre-med student in order to get into medical school. Sooner or later, one realizes that it is impossible to be number one at everything. Mister Goldberg is straight to the point emphasizing the most important things that a pre-med student should focus on and gives multiple examples based on his previous students. His technique helps students to find their strengths and represent themselves really well at every step during the application procedure (personal statement, medical school interviews,...). There are so many ESSENTIAL details that students are not taught at school that can make really big difference during the application procedure.
Great book
The book was fantastic and applied perfectly to my goal of being a physician assistant. I was accepted to the program of my choice and felt the book was extremely helpful in helping me achieve this. -C
Most realistic and effective advice
I've read other similar books. This is the best one I've read. I've helped several college students understand what exact plan they needed to get into medical school. It worked for them. They were accepted to multiple medical schools. The information I used to advise them was all from this book.
Mr. Goldberg's Advice Helped Me and Can Help You Too!
I cannot say enough good things about the advice I received from both this book and from talking to Mr. Goldberg in person. He is very knowledgable about medical school admissions, with an expertise in interview eiquette. I came to Mr. Goldberg as a timid high school student interested in applying to direct BS/MD programs. Mr. Goldberg took out time from his busy schedule and coached me one-on-one to create interview answers that were both concise and reflective of what I wanted to portray to an admissions committee. With his help, I was able to gain admission to a wide array of selective programs across the country. I also still use a majority of the interview skills I learned from him to this day and expect to continue doing so when it comes time to apply for residency. Many of the tips he discussed with me are also outlined in this book, labeled as "The Goldberg Method". I would recommend that anyone considering a career in medicine at least give this book a chance. You definitely will not regret it.
PreMed Must-Read!
Reading this book and speaking with Mr. Goldberg were huge game-changers in my med school application process! The book gives premed students straight-forward advice. And as a student who doesn't have time to read flowery novels on top of studying for the MCAT and premed courses, this book is a perfect, easy-read format that you can breeze through and come back to it many times later on. I would definitely recommend premed students to read the book and if you need any personalized help with personal statements or interviews, Mr. Goldberg is your guy! He gets right to the point and his non-nonsense, tough love attitude gets the job done well and efficiently. My essay was at final draft status within just two revisions after talking to him. And after reading the list of potential interview questions, I'm confident that I will be prepared for anything that is thrown my way. Great book, great author! Highly recommend!
A New Bible For Those Who Thirst For Wisdom
Life takes us through interesting twists & turns and ever so often we wish that someone would be there to hold our hand and guide us. That, they say is only a dream. When I read the book by Mr. Goldberg, I realized that it need not just be a dream. I promptly bought several copies and sent them to all of my daughter's friends at Lake Forest College, for that guiding hand, I believe, was in the pages of this amazingly written book. I urge all of us who have or know those young adolescents who are thirsting for wisdom and guidance to be presented with this book. Mr. Goldberg has done his part, it is now our part to share it with all those who are embarking on their new journey of life.
Amazing Resource!!!
I would first like to mention that although the title of this book appears to only apply to pre-med students, it is a tremendous resource for anyone interested in graduate level health care programs. I used many aspects of this book, especially "The Goldberg Method", for my interview process for Physician Assistant programs. Before reading this book, I could not fathom how I was going to convince programs that I was more qualified than hundreds of other bright individuals for a limited number of seats in each class. After I read the chapter on the interview process, I felt more than prepared for the interviews and was surprisingly not nervous, but confident when interviewing. It would be a mistake not to spend the $21.84 on a book that makes a complicated process so easy to understand.
A must-have resource for physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or recruiter
This review is by my wife, Marcy Traxler I have been in healthcare for over 25 years, interviewing and hiring dozens of physicians, specialists, and allied health professionals. In business first impressions are lasting impressions. The steps and protocol provided for an excellent interview would help anyone in their interview, whether it is a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or recruiter. So You Want to be a Physician, is a must-have resource for anyone that is involved in the physician enterprise. Mr. Goldberg provides a comprehensive catalogue of the types of questions that can uncover key insights into a candidate's values, beliefs and work ethic. Marcy Traxler
I love that aspect in a prep book
Mr. Goldberg wrote a very coherent book in order to prepare for a career in medicine, whether it is going to medical school to become a doctor or to a nursing school to become a nurse and proceed to becoming a NP. Additionally, this book exhibits various examples of personal statements, which were once submitted to the admissions committee for various programs. I love that aspect in a prep book, as it gives the reader an idea on how to formulate their own personal statement. Furthermore, this book was an easy read with very valuable insight on the path of becoming and stabilizing a career in medicine – especially for aspiring physicians. I look forward to having Mr. Goldberg help prepare me for residency in the near future!

My name is Asaysha Miller. I am a Certified Child Life Specialist and in the midst of applying for jobs. I am not a great interviewee and become nervous when talking to people about myself and skills. I read Edward Goldberg’s book and was able to speak with him on the phone. Even though his book is about medical school I was able to apply the basic concepts to my profession and background. His ideas about memorizing answers to two main questions boosted my self-esteem and comfort level during an interview. I am very grateful for all of the tips and suggestions Eddie made during our phone conversations.

I thought that the book had some great advice, and was overall very well written and helpful! I took a lot away from the interviews that he conducted with the medical students, and my son benefited from the pointers Mr. Goldberg gave him in his route to getting accepted to medical school. 5/5 and a must read!

Great Advice
I have been in the healthcare industry for 40 years. I worked with Ed Goldberg from 1996 to 1998 in the Chicago area. I was told that Ed is different, not easily managed. I found that Ed was totally different from any CEO that I had ever worked with. His guidance and mentoring has prepared many students for medical school, dental school and future healthcare executives. We were so successful in the Chicago market that my boss asked me how I changed Ed and accomplished this success. I told him it was easy; I didn't change Ed, Ed changed me. He is the best!
