Susan Hunt

In Sammy and His Shepherd, veteran children’s writer Susan Hunt takes youngsters on a delightful trip through Psalm 23 from the point of view of a sheep named Sammy.

Sammy lives happily under the care of his faithful shepherd. But one day he meets a sheep from another flock, one who lives in misery because her shepherd is not so caring. Eventually, to the delight of both of them, Sammy’s shepherd buys the needy little sheep for his flock and gives her a name―Precious. Thereafter, Sammy tells Precious all the wonderful things about their shepherd. At first, Precious has a hard time believing that the shepherd can be so good. But eventually, as she sees the shepherd pouring out his energies for the good of his flock, she comes to trust him, for she sees that he loves his sheep unconditionally and sacrificially.

Each chapter of Sammy and His Shepherd is an exploration of a passage from Psalm 23. As they work through the book, children will grow in their understanding of the metaphors the psalmist used in composing this beloved poem. But more important, they will gain a deeper appreciation for the one who is the subject of the psalm: the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. Captivating illustrations by Corey Godbey help Sammy and Precious come to life for children. A special section in the back of the book provides Bible passages, discussion questions, and activities to reinforce the lessons of each chapter.

A Wonderful Allegorical Tale about Psalm 23

Sammy and His Shepard is written by Susan Hint and published by Reformation Trust Publishing, and is one of the children’s titles currently offered under this publisher. Susan Hunt is a familiar name in ministry to Children. She is highly acclaimed for his works on the children’s catechism and in ministry to women; she is also the former director of women’s ministry for the Presbyterian Church in America. Sammy and His Shepard is an tale which explains in narrative form Psalm 23. Unlike most of the other children’s books currently produced by Reformation Trust, Sammy and His Shepard is not aimed at the youngest of children, rather it is best read by or to a child age five and older. Sammy and His Shepard has two key strengths the content and the illustration. With regard to the content, Sammy and His Shepard Hunt goes to great lengths in imparting the truths of God’s Word important truths to young children without dumbing the Truth down. Which is uncommon among most children’s books being made today, though all of Reformation Trust Publishing are notable exceptions. The truth Hunt communicates is the simplicity and depth of the Gospel, as shown in Psalm 23. Another important item to note is that the book is long in length 56 pages and is therefore divided up into chapters, but those chapters are at max a page or so in length. In regard to the illustration Sammy and His Shepard, has bright colors and is expertly drawn so that it not only captures a child’s attention but their imagination as well. Furthermore the illustrations not only illustrate the allegorical tale but advance the narrative in a way mere words cannot. This book was provided to me free of charge from Reformation Trust Publishing in exchange for an unbiased, honest review. Very good addition to childrens' library

This book really fleshes out the sheep/shepherd metaphor that the Bible uses for us. It taught me something about how sheep function and why having a good shepherd is so important. Somethings I had heard in sermons - like that sheep are completely defenseless - but the book talks about how sheep can be "cast down" or turned on their backs. They need someone to turn then right or they will die. By going through such detailed pieces about sheep it made the shepherd metaphor in the Bible even more impactful. It is also very beautiful and has an excellent plot. These were definite "wishes" on my list from Christian's literature and this delivered. From the book I figured it would just go over Psalm 23 piece by piece, which it does. However, it goes much deeper, delving into grace and why we help others as Christians. However, it never suggests work based salvation, which is something I was very concerned about. Cons: It was a little lengthy in each piece. When reading I would have to break it up. However, each chapter has so much truth that this is not a problem.

Trusting Your Sheperd

This is a well written book about a sheep named Sammy that shares his testimony with a struggling sheep named Precious. The way Susan Hunt uses sheep as pictures of the Christian walk will really help children to understand the sweet peace that comes through trusting in Christ who is our Sheperd. The entire book is based on a line by reading of the Lords Prayer and each point is described as the story unfolds. It is really quite emotional. The beautiful illustration by Cory Godbey are a real compliment to what Susan is trying to do. The choice of colors used is amazing in the way that it really captures the mood. Soft yet descriptive. The book uses the ESV version of the Bible instead of the King James, but you can always go to the King James for the correct meaning. It is hard not to feel for the sheep named Precious as she, like most new Christians, learns not to trust in her fears. She must now trust her faithful Sheperd who loves her and protects her, even if she doesn't understand what He is trying to do at the time. I would recommend this book for children of all ages. The lessons from this book are top-notch and I want this book in our children's ministry. Review by Mick McArt Author, Tales of Wordishure [...] May 31, 2010

A "must have" for every family bookshelf!

If you are a parent who is trying to raise their child to love Jesus then you've no doubt faced the obstacles of communicating deep theological truths to your child in a way that will not only be understandable to them, but in a way that will be meaningful to them as they grow and have an impact on their choices in life. My wife and I are ALWAYS on the lookout for tools and helps to assist us in communicating the truths of the Gospel to our children. This is a fantastic book to help your children understand how God cares for His children. It is the story of Sammy, a sheep with a good Shepherd. He meets a friend and throughout the story he is explaining to his friend how Christ redeems and loves us even though we do nothing to merit that love. The whole story is an exposition of truths found in Psalm 23 and written in a way that young children can understand. At the end of every chapter there is a discussion section that will help you lead your children in a discussion over the symbols in the book as they relate to Biblical truth. Absolutely fantastic and absolutely something that every family should have on their bookshelf!

Excellent book for children

This breaks down the 23rd Psalm for children to understand and relate to. As a grown up it was an encouragement to me when I read it. So glad to be giving this as a gift. I will probably buy another one to give when the opportunity presents itself.

Precious boom!

I love this book! Bought it after hearing it read in my daughters kindergarten class. Their memory verse was psalm 23. They were reading this book during devotion time. I then bought one for a teacher gift. I even recommended the book to a friend. It helped me have new perspective on an old verse.

Buy this book!

This is a wonderful book. I started teaching my 5 and 7 year old memorization of Psalm 23 and this book helped to explain each verse to them in a way that they could understand.

Beautiful Gospel centric

Our family loves this sweet story of the sheep who knows Jesus. The Gospel is centered in this kids story, and the artwork is beautiful. I now give this book as gifts at baby showers and baptisms!

Wonderful

Love this book!!! I buy a copy for every new family with children at church.

Great book

We purchased this book because my son was getting ready to learn about psalm 23 in Sunday school and we thought it would help reinforce what he was learning. He absolutely loved the stories, and couldn't wait to find out what was happening next. Also, the illustrations are beautiful! After going through it twice (one or two short chapters per night), he has the entire psalm memorized! Btw, he just turned 4. He has also started thanking God for being our shepherd usually along with an attribute from the psalm during his prayers. It has been so wonderful to watch the Lord work in my child's heart through his understanding gained from this book. Definitely worth every penny and then some! I think this would also be a great Sunday school resource for preschool/young gradeschool age, the chapters are short enough and the questions provided with each chapter are very helpful. All around a great book!

Sparks Amazing Conversation

This is an amazing book to read to your children about the goodness of God. A very good find. Reading one section per evening with grandchildren. It is lengthy & a good one to read & discuss questions with each section. Amazing conversations to be had with children.

Sammy and His Shepherd

We really like the book. It is very helpful in teaching children about Psalm 23 and able to talk with them about Jesus as our Good Shepherd.

So sweet

I love this book my kids loved it for bedtime devotions. Just beautiful

I love, love

I love, love, love this book. It is basically the gospel as seen through Psalms 23. Each chapter covers a couple of verses of the Psalm and reveals an aspect of God's character. There are also discussion questions along with each chapter. This is a great resource for any Christian home.

I teach at a private Christian school ... my kids love this book! It easily helps them understand the 23rd Psalm.

My kids loved this book as much as I did

My kids loved this book as much as I did. We did the discussion questions at the end of each chapter which spring boarded us into natural conversations. It is beautifully illustrated. I purchased a few extra to give as gifts.

I love how this book makes the 23rd Psalm more real ...

I love how this book makes the 23rd Psalm more real and personal and more understandable to children as illustrated by the story. It also gave me more insights on the Psalm as an adult.

Great, though may be too much for small kids

This is a great set of stories showing how Jesus is our good shepherd by going verse by verse through Psalm 23. This may be a little abstract for small kids but they still enjoy it as long as you stick to one verse at a time.

Such a beautiful story!!!!

Excellent

Great book for young children. It puts psalm 23 into a story format...very cute. Could've used more pictures for the really young children, but my daughter thoroughly enjoys the story and so do I.

Good message but lacking more pictures

This has a good message, but I got it for my 3 year old son and it doesn't really hold his attention yet. There's more words than pictures--some pages have no pictures at all. I will keep it for when he's older though. The artwork seems more suited to a girl, lots of pinks and purples.

Fantastic insight into Psalm 23!

This is such a delightful exposition of Psalm 23 for children (and their adults)! I've teared up, gained comfort, and felt conviction while reading this book with my children. One of the later chapters talks about how the good shepherd told Sammy, "there are no annoying sheep; just annoyed sheep", and it deeply impressed upon me God's heart for unity and love among his children as HE does the hard work of changing them to be more holy. This book has been great for us to read and engage further by answering the questions in the back of the book for each chapter. I look forward to revisiting it in future years with all of our children. I highly recommend this book!

We are His Sheep. Humbling and Wonderful.

Sammy and His Shepherd reminds us that to be called Christ's Flock of Sheep is both accurate and wonderful. Accurate because we wander away, we aren't wise enough to know grass from a poisonous weed, we fall off of cliffs trying to get "better" grazing than in the safe pasture, and if we roll onto our back we cannot right ourselves without our Shepherd. Wonderful because Jesus chose to carry us as a Shepherd carries His Sheep, and knowing a little bit about the many ways a Good Shepherd cares for His flock gives us a tiny glimpse into Christ's care for us. Sammy and His Shepherd is a long children's book- 60 pages and every page beautiful. At the end Child-on-the-right said "It's OVER?!!!" She did not want Sammy's story to end. Sammy is a little sheep whom the Good Shepherd bought when he was sick. The Shepherd prayed for Sammy and cared for him tenderly. Sammy was restored to health and the Shepherd named him Samuel "Heard of God" because God heard His prayers. The name was a sign of the Shepherd's Love, and the fact that Sammy has a name at all is surprising to a little thin sheep in the next pasture. The thin little sheep has no name and lives in a dirty, dry pasture. Sammy lives in green pastures beside still waters and has plenty because of his Good Shepherds care. "Early morning was Sammy's favorite time of the day. The air was crisp, the grass was yummy, and everything was still as the night softly melted into day. Sammy called it his quiet time. He liked to use the time to think about all of his blessings. " The little Sheep doesn't think she has any blessings, except for Sammy, who calls her My Friend and talks to her every day. When it is time for the Good Shepherd to take His flock to summer grazing, My Friend is so desperate that she tries to follow them, and gets stuck in a fence. Just as the evil shepherd is about to beat My Friend with his staff for trying to escape, the Good Shepherd frees her from the fence and buys her from the evil shepherd. Then he carries this sick, dirty, nameless sheep home. "As he walked, the shepherd whispered to My Friend. 'Now you belong to me,' he said. "The only way you could become part of my flock was for me to redeem you--to buy you. But now you are mine. No one can ever take you away from me. I will never leave you, and I will always lead you on good paths. Now,' he grinned, 'what shall I name you?'" The Good Shepherd names her Precious, and she begins to learn what it is like to be part of the Good Shepherd's flock. This book follows Psalm 23, and my summary of it does not do it justice. These sixty pages contain truth after truth. This book will not disappoint. "'It takes time to learn to trust our shepherd,' Sammy said with a smile. 'The more you know him, the more you'll trust him. You'll even trust him when you don't understand what he's doing or why he's doing it.'"

Sammy and His Shepherd looks like a great book for our family right now

Sammy and His Shepherd looks like a great book for our family right now. It is the kid-equivalent of A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23. In the book, a sheep named Sammy enjoys living under the perfect care of a perfect shepherd. The book takes Psalm 23, line-by-line, and exposits it through the eyes of Sammy who experiences it in a literal way in his sheep-y(?) life. This makes the truths of Psalm 23 much more easily absorbed by young kids. At the same time, the experiences of another sheep under a wicked shepherd’s care can be used to highlight the good of the good shepherd or to reveal the end result of living under a bad shepherd. In full disclosure, I’d looked at this book when my kids (now 4, 3, 2, and 3.5 months) were a little younger, and I’d put it down pretty quickly. For a book featuring a male sheep named “Sammy,” its cover was very pink! Also, there are chapter divisions and a lot more words per picture than in books like The Lightlings or The Prince’s Poison Cup. At the time, Tim Ladwig’s Psalm Twenty-Three was more appropriate when it came to word/picture-ratio. Now, though, my kids can handle taking in more words at a time, and our oldest children already have Psalm 23 memorized. So, Hunt’s book seems like a perfect jumping-board for us in terms of enabling our children to understand more of the Psalm and to discuss how it applies to our lives. It also doesn’t hurt that one of the main sheep characters is given the name “Precious.” “Precious” is our own nickname for our 4 year-old, who I think is going to have a lot of questions and thoughts generated during a soon-to-come Sammy and His Shepherd family read-aloud. Bible Commentary for Children

This book by Susan Hunt, consultant for the PCA's Women in the Church ministry, tells the story of a little sheep named Sammy who is in the care of the good shepherd. He befriends a nameless sheep in another pasture and calls him My Friend. As Sammy and My Friend grow to care for one anther, My Friend learns about how the good shepherd takes care of his sheep, so unlike his own shepherd who is cruel and uncaring. In desperation, My Friend attempts to escape his own pasture by digging under the fence. Sammy becomes upset and soon the shepherd notices what is going on: Finally the shepherd freed My Friend from the fence. He picked her up and held her tenderly in his arms. "I will buy her from you," he said to the other shepherd. "Why do you want to buy her? She's so sickly she'll probably die." The good shepherd smiled. "Maybe so, but I love her and I want her to be one of my sheep." He paid the man and began to walk across the pasture holding the dirty, sickly sheep. Sammy skipped along beside the shepherd, bursting with happiness. Hunt does a beautiful job of telling the story of our Lord Jesus in this childlike story of sheep putting trust in their shepherd and journeying with him even into places that seem dangerous. Brought to life with colorful artwork, this book could easily be considered a "child's first Bible commentary" as each chapter exposits Psalm 23 verse by verse. I, too, found it to be a refreshing look at the gospel as I took the journey with Sammy and My Friend to the heights where there were greener pastures and still streams. A bit advanced for my 5-month-old, but I look forward to sharing this book with him when he is older, though he does already enjoy the picutres. A great way to share the gospel with any elementary age student as they learn about how My Friend grows to love and trust the good shepherd. Endearing, Tender and Wonderful

Sammy And His Shepherd by Susan Hunt Recommendation: Highly Recommended Sammy is a dear little lamb who loves his shepherd. As he grows he continually learns new and wonderful things about his Shepherd. One day he meets another sheep, one who isn't from his flock, one who has another shepherd. He feels sorry for this poor sheep as he sees her struggle. One day his shepherd buys his new friend and now they can live together. This new friend however has many questions, Sammy patiently answers her questions and teaches Precious all about their wonderful Shepherd. Positives: If you have ever wanted to show your children Jesus in the Old Testament this is a perfect book for it! This portrayal of Psalm 23 clearly illustrates Christ as the Good Shepherd, a wonderful balance of of tenderness and truth. The questions to talk about at the end of the book provide a great resource for parents to continue to expand their child's understanding of Scripture and of who Jesus is. The illustrations are beautiful as well. Negatives: None Talking Points: The "Talk About It" section at the end of the book is marvelous, I cannot improve on this excellent resource! Use it as you read through the book. It provides additional Scripture references and excellent questions that will spur on conversation with your child. Take the author's suggestion and memorize this Psalm together as a family. Age Level: 3-8 year olds I received a free copy of this book from Reformation Trust Publishing for this review.

Insightful Look At Psalm 23

Susan Hunt is a gifted writer. I've read several of her books and, like the others, "Sammy and His Shepherd" did not disappoint. In this book, she seeks to help her readers understand Psalm 23 through Sammy, a compassionate, young sheep and his nameless friend outside of the sheepfold. Sammy tells his friend of all that his Shepherd does for him, and his friend finds herself longing to be cared for in much the same way. Susan had wonderful insights into the caring of sheep reminiscent of Phillip Keller's book "A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23" (though, truth be told, I have not read Keller's book in its entirety). As an adult, I find Hunt's book to be particularly refreshing. It is filled with Biblical truth and told in an engaging manner. Sammy and His Shepherd is unique in that it makes Psalm 23 understandable to children. I don't know of any book quite like it for this age group. When we got to the end of the book, my daughter exclaimed, "That's the end!" She then proceeded to ask if there were other books in the series and was quite sad to realize that there are no others continuing the story of Sammy, his friend, and the Shepherd. However, she excitedly pronounced that she would write her own story to continue where this one left off. The one concern that I have about this book is that Ms. Hunt seems to expect that the children to whom she is writing are converted. This is evident in a "Talk About It" section filled with discussion questions and prayer suggestions. I say this is a concern because we do not want children (especially those growing up in the church) to assume that they are saved when they have not personalized their parents' faith; we don't want to give them false assurance. There was also one point in the story that I think might be misleading doctrinally. It has to do with who initiates salvation. However, I won't expound upon that for fear of spoiling the plot. ;) All in all, the story was well done. I believe Ms. Hunt was successful in what she set out to accomplish: making Psalm 23 more clear to all ages. There is a level of depth in this Psalm that I have missed all these years. This is a book that I will read again and again to my children without getting bored! Highly recommended! (Many thanks to Reformation Trust Publishing for granting me a review copy in exchange for my honest opinion!)

Cute story with great parallels to the 23rd Psalm

Sammy and His Shepherd by Susan Hunt, is a bit longer than most of the books I have reviewed thus far, although I would still consider it a "children's" book. It is based on the 23rd Psalm and each 1-3 page chapter's title comes from one of the lines of the 23rd Psalm. The story is about Samuel (called "Sammy" for short) who has a good shepherd. One day, Sammy meets an unnamed sheep who has a lazy, uncaring shepherd. Sammy calls this sheep "My Friend," and they compare stories about their shepherds. Sammy keeps an eye out for "My Friend" and one day, when "My Friend" gets into trouble, he starts bleating and running around until his shepherd becomes aware of what has happened. The good shepherd buys "My Friend" and renames her, "Precious." It takes Precious a while to come to trust her new shepherd, but with time and Sammy's help, she begins to realize that she has been bought by a shepherd who will take good care of her, lead her beside still waters, allow her to lie down in green pastures, and keep away their enemies. She also learns how to get along with other sheep who even annoy her sometimes because Sammy reminds her that every sheep in their flock has been bought by their shepherd and is precious to their shepherd, and that they should try to get along if only for their good shepherd's sake. This is a touching story that parallels the 23rd Psalm in a way that young children can understand. It has a set of questions at the end of the book for each chapter so you can discuss the book with you child(ren). The pictures of the sheep are a touch cartoony, but they are also beautiful with lots of bright colors and beautiful scenery. My two year old doesn't have the patience to listen to the whole story at once (as it's 43 pages long), but she does enjoy reading a few pages at a time. This will definitely be one of our "read it again" books. Many thanks to Reformation Trust Publishers for providing this book for my review. They did not ask for a positive review, merely an honest one.

Sammy and His Shepherd

Sammy is a young sheep who loves his shepherd and is loved in return. When he encounters a lonely sheep outside of his flock who has no name and a careless shepherd, Sammy befriends her. Sammy's new friend is eventually purchased from her careless shepherd by Sammy's watchful shepherd and named Precious. Sammy and Precious follow their shepherd to the high places and learn life lessons as they go. Ultimately, Precious comes to learn that she can trust her shepherd because his love is never-ending. The story of Sammy and His Shepherd parallels Psalm 23 of the Bible. Psalm 23 is perhaps one of the most well-known chapters of the Bible and it is certainly worth teaching to children. Each chapter of Precious and Sammy's story is titled with a phrase from the Psalm and deals with the theme of that phrase. There is a "Talk About It" section at the end of the book which can help the parent and child delve deeper into each theme presented. This section includes additional Bible verses, questions to talk about and suggestions of things to do. This practical application section reinforces the simple, truthful teachings set forth in the story. The illustrations in this book were beautiful. However, I wished there had been more of them. There was basically one illustrated page per chapter. At times this allowed for there to be two pages that were just straight text. Other than that, it is a great childrens book that has the potential to teach Biblical lessons and encourage parent-child devotional time. I recommend this book for children ages 4 to 9. Good for Children and Grown-ups

Sammy and His Shepherd is not a book to read in one sitting--at least, not to a child. But for adults who love the 23rd Psalm, it may be hard to put down. Susan Hunt's book has eleven short chapters. Each chapter illustrates a verse from Psalm 23. These illustrations are perfect for children, but they will be appreciated by the grown-ups, too. In chapter one: "The Lord is My Shepherd; I Shall Not Want," we are introduced to Sammy, the happy and content sheep. Sammy's shepherd loves his sheep, names them, and cares for them in every way. Sammy meets a nameless and pathetic little ewe across the fence. She is amazed to hear about Sammy's shepherd and wants to know more. The good shepherd eventually buys the little ewe, and she continues to be amazed by his love. At the end of the book are related verses, discussion questions, and applications for each chapter. The verses are taken from the English Standard Version. This supplemental material is ideal for helping children understand the concepts taught in each chapter. Susan Hunt has a degree in Christian education from Columbia Theological Seminary. It shows in this book. Sammy and His Shepherd teaches good theology in a way that children can understand. Cory Codby's full-page, colorful paintings top the book off. They are wonderfully done. The aesthetics combined with the sound teaching in Sammy and His Shepherd make a winning combination.

A parable based on Psalm 23

I love the book of Psalms. Psalm 23 is tried and true and commonly used, but it's also one of my favorites. That's why I was excited to find Sammy and His Shepherd. I requested it to review from Reformation Trust because I love children's books. And I love Psalm 23. (I know I said that already. It's my party blog, and I can cry be redundant if I want to.) This is the story of Sammy, short for Samuel, who has a loving shepherd. And the story of a sheep who had no name and an unkind shepherd but who is bought and redeemed and loved and named Precious by Sammy's shepherd. As she learns about the blessings and responsibilities of being a sheep of the shepherd's, we (parents and children) learn lessons about being children of our Shepherd. Each of the eleven chapters is titled with a verse or part of a verse from Psalm 23, and then that chapter illustrates the verse through the parable of Sammy and his shepherd. To help parents in using this as a Bible study or in just discussing it further, a lengthy appendix in the back includes additional verses, questions for discussion, and action steps for each chapter. I consider this another must-have for your children's library. Love, love, love it. "We, your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise." Psalm 79:13 (Many thanks to Reformation Trust Publishing for allowing me, an unworthy sheep, to review this. They didn't ask for a positive review, only an honest one.)

Treasured Psalm 23

Sammy and His Shepherd Seeing Jesus in Psalm 23 Susan Hunt Illustrated by Cory Godbey Reformation Trust Publishing Incredible illustrated story of Psalm 23! Each chapter takes a verse of Psalm 23 and weaves a children's story out of it, bringing the Psalm to life for youngsters. Sammy the sheep is very happy and well provided for by his shepherd who loves him and cares for him. Sammy meets a scraggly sheep on the other side of the fence that he names `My Friend'. She is missing the four key elements to having rest, when Sammy can easily sleep in the green pastures. She is missing safety, cohesiveness amongst all of the sheep, peace and food. Later `My Friend' is laying on her back `cast down' and Sammy's shepherd goes to her and rights her. The shepherd sees how down the little sheep is and goes to her shepherd and buys her from him. He renames her Precious as she is to him. Now with Precious in the herd, Sammy can begin to teach her how to rely on the shepherd. After each chapter there is a talk about it section to turn to in the back of the book. Some time to reflect on the verse and read other scripture to go along with it. There are 11 chapters and just the perfect size for devotional time, or bedtime Bible reading. Fantastic illustration of Psalm 23 in vivid detail. On a level children can understand and relate to their own lives.

Sammy and His Shepherd

Sammy and his Shepherd Sammie and his Shepherd is an incredible children's book which creatively expounds Psalm 23. Hunt's writing style makes deep scriptural truth understandable for the even the youngest of children. Hunt uses Psalm 23 and explains deep doctrinal truths (e.g. New birth, the need for atonement, perseverance, perseveration, and salvation by faith alone apart from works) in an easy to read, picture friendly way. Hunt's pictures are very captivating and attractive to the eye, which helps children stay attentive to the message and bridges the gap between the image and word. Another attractive aspect of the book is that Hunt closes every chapter with a time to discuss the chapter. The discussion time is quiet helpful because it allows parents to ensure that their little ones are understanding all the material and the implications of the material. Hunt also aids the parents at the end of her book by giving discussion questions and scriptural references to the answers to these discussion questions. After breaking down the entire Psalm throughout the bookm, Hunt ends the book by quoting the entire passage. Hunt concludes by bringing to story back to its root and pointing it back to the scripture in which it is based upon. Sammy and his Shepherd not only teaches important doctrinal truths of scripture but it also instructs little children on how to apply these great truths of scripture (e.g. Loving you neighbor, the human responsibility and God's sovereignty, consequences for disobedience, and trusting in Lord and not leaning upon your own understanding). Sammy and his Shepherd is a wonderful story and aid for parents to teach their children scriptural truth in a simple/ applicable way. [...]

A wonderful narrative exploration of Psalm 23

Susan Hunt, best known for her Christian ministry to women, has written a wonderful narrative exploration of Psalm 23. In this story, Sammy the sheep befriends a lonely, neglected sheep in the next pasture. Through their successive conversations, it becomes clear that Sammy's shepherd is skilled in taking care of sheep in a number of crucial ways. When the lonely sheep decides to join Sammy in his pasture, the good shepherd buys her from her surly keeper; then My Friend (renamed "Precious" by the shepherd) has to learn to be part of his flock. Each chapter begins with a line from the 23rd Psalm and develops the idea in it by explaining quite a bit of background information about Middle Eastern shepherding practices. This provides even the youngest listeners with practical and detailed insight into the Psalmist's intent when he penned Psalm 23, poetically comparing the Lord to a shepherd. This narrative approach to interpreting scripture is especially effective in helping children internalize the important themes of faith, trust and dependence on God. Unlike most children's devotionals available, this one is a pretty good story all on its own, with better than average illustrations. There are also discussion questions provided in an appendix to help adults review and interpret the story with their listeners.

Adorable AND Biblical

This is an adorable book! It's set up in short chapter format, each chapter heading is a line from Psalm 23. The story tells about how Sammy the sheep, who belongs to the good shepherd, befriends a sheep in the pasture next door. Each short chapter heading is a line from Psalm 23, and the chapter expands upon the verse within the story context. The book is set up for the child and the adult reading the book to them to discuss the Biblical themes as the story progresses. Suggested talking points are included for each chapter at the end of the book. This is a lovely little book for children. But honestly, I found it very encouraging as well! The sweet lessons learned by Sammy and the other sheep are very true and as comforting as Christians have found Psalm 23 throughout the ages. I encourage you to read this book with your children, I believe you both would benefit. I am receiving this book free from Reformation Trust in exchange for my unbiased review.

Book Review - Sammy and His Shepherd: Seeing Jesus in Psalm 23

Sammy and His Shepherd: Seeing Jesus in Psalm 23 was written by Susan Hunt and illustrated by Cory Godbey. This outstanding book takes young readers on a fun and faith-filled journey through the twenty-third Psalm. This book walks through Psalm 23 phrase by phrase in an enjoyable story, helping children to better understand this familiar psalm. The title of each chapter of the book includes one phrase taken from Psalm 23 and goes on to expound on that phrase through the story of Sammy the sheep and his experiences. Sammy is a joyful sheep who is happy to be under the care of a good shepherd. He encounters a sad and dejected sheep living on the other side of the fence. This sheep, which does not even have a name, belongs to a bad shepherd, and her needs are not being met. Sammy befriends this sheep, and Sammy's good shepherd later purchases her. She is given a new name, Precious, and becomes part of the flock. As they journey together, Sammy patiently helps Precious understand what it means to live as part of this flock. The story is a wonderful parable of the Christian life, living as part of the flock under Jesus, our Good Shepherd. Although this book is intended for children, even adults can learn valuable lessons from the simple truths of the faith that are presented. At the end of each chapter, readers are pointed to a "Talk About It" section located at the end of the book. These questions and thoughts are important to help young readers connect the story of Sammy and Precious with the real-life idea of Jesus as our Good Shepherd. One thing I might change about this book is the consistency of these sections in regards to the type and number of questions and activities. The "Talk About It" section for some chapters contained several questions, Bible verses, and thoughts, while others contained only a few. Some sections featured questions requiring higher levels of thinking, while others included mostly simpler comprehension and review questions. The illustrations in this book were very well done. The excellent use of light and color in the illustrations helps to capture the mood throughout the story. Dark hues are used to show the depression, misery or hardship experienced in the story, while lighter colors are used to illustrate the hope radiating on the better side of the fence. The newfound joy and peace of Precious are evident throughout the pictures, as her ears appear to perk up little by little throughout the book. Many children are encouraged to memorize Psalm 23, and this book would be a good resource in helping children to comprehend the meaning of the words they are learning. This book will help readers to understand some of the background information relating to sheep and shepherds that formed the basis for such biblical passages. Many children love animals, so this book will connect with children and help to illuminate biblical truths. Disclosure: I am to receive a free copy of this book from Reformation Trust Publishing as compensation for my review.

Valuable Educational Allegory, But No Rival to Narnia

Reading "The Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis as a child created a special place in my heart for the genre of allegorical fiction. There's something magical about reading a story that is beautiful and wholly complete and engaging in its own right, but that also speaks secretly of other-worldly truths. In reading "Sammy & His Shepherd," I kept longing for it to be just as magical & captivating as Narnia. Written as an allegory of Psalm 23, "Sammy & His Shepherd" introduces children to a fictional talking sheep named Sammy, his underprivileged protege Precious, and their loving and all-powerful shepherd. As the story unfolds, we see chapter by chapter how the shepherd leads his sheep through green pastures, leads them beside still waters, restores their souls, etc. What is it that made me long for more from Sammy's allegory? I wanted the plot to be richer & the allegorical symbolism to be less obvious. Author Susan Hunt resolves the main plot tension by chapter 5, so the remaining 6 chapters feel too long and anti-climactic to provide a satisfying denouement. As an example of how the plot could have been improved, I feel Hunt could have developed the chapters on "the valley of the shadow of death" and "in the presence of my enemies" to include scenes of actual peril or visible enemy threat. Instead, these chapters simply revolve around monologues by Sammy talking about how his shepherd protects him in perilous & threatening situations. Show don't tell please. At this point, I must offer myself a gentle reminder that this book is probably intended mostly as an educational tool for a pre-school and elementary school audience. Created for use in a family or classroom devotional time, with discussion questions provided to fully unpack all the allegorical references, this book shines most brightly as a teaching resource. I received "Sammy & His Shepherd" free from the publisher as compensation for my review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Beautiful pages, beautiful words

To be completely honest, the reason I picked up this book is because it’s illustrated by my husband’s favorite artist. My husband found this artist at the Albino Skunk Music Festival in Greenville, SC, and has been excited to find any of his work since then. As much as we love the aesthetics of this book, I am here to tell you that the writing and messages are even sweeter and even more breathtaking. As I read this book, as my husband and I were eating breakfast at one of our favorite cafés before church on Sunday, I paused often to read something to him that was particularly encouraging to me or challenging to me. This book has that “Jesus-Storybook-Bible-quality” to it, where you get to read a penetrating truth at a child’s level and always come out being challenged by a faithful interpretation of God’s word. This book begins with a preface addressed to “lovers of children.” I really almost teared up right there. I felt like Susan was writing straight to me. My husband and I don’t have children yet (although we hope to some day), but we have lots of children that we love so deeply. It was so reviving to be encouraged as an important person in the rearing of the child – just one who loves the child enough to read to them. That was a small thing, but it was of a great encouragement to me. Sammy and His Shepherd looks through the eyes of sheep as it breaks down Psalm 23, line by line. This perspective helps the reader better understand Christ as our shepherd and the sweet, gracious care he gives his flock. The book is divided by lines or phrases in the psalm, and the sheep discuss what those lines mean in their lives. Hunt encourages the reader to read through Psalm 23 (printed in the front of the book) each time you begin a section, so that the hearts of the children are bathed in the words of the psalm. It is structured in such a way as to have a reading time with children over each section of the book individually. There are questions and answers in the back of the book that relate to each section. Each of those “Talk About It” sections include what the Bible tells us, something to talk about, and something to do. The Lord knew he was gently preparing for things to come that I didn’t even realize. The day after I read this book, my grandmother passed away. My father, without my foreknowledge, chose to use Psalm 23 at her services. I am so thankful to have meditated on it and dwelt on its sweetness beforehand. We serve a kind and generous Father. This book will aid in your family’s worship, and it’s a great book to have to nieces and nephews and “adopted” nieces and nephews in our case. Lovely, Simple, and True

What a sweet little treat do I have for you! If you have younger brothers and sisters they will be so blessed to be read this darling little story... Sammy and His Shepherd is a charming child's tale about Sammy, a little sheep, who is under the care of the Shepherd as described in Psalm 23. In the beginning of the book, Sammy meets another sheep who is under the care of a different shepherd. Sammy understands more and more as he sees "My Friend" (that is what Sammy called her because she had no name) in her bare meadow and her thin body, how greatly his Shepherd cares for him and loves him. As time goes on, "My Friend" also gets to witness and understand the love of Sammy's shepherd. Woven within this story is the revelation of Jesus Christ and how He is our Shepherd- and exactly what that means. I was so blessed by this story: the innocence, the childlike faith that Sammy had in his Shepherd, the love that is portrayed- I was even holding back tears during one of the chapters! The illustrations are gorgeous, simply stunning. I love the vibrancy of the colors and the whimsy in the art. The writing was nice and simple for little ears to understand making it an excellent read aloud. The discussion questions after each chapter contained a corresponding Bible verse with questions and a suggested "activity" for the child to live the lesson that he had just learned. I cannot wait to read this aloud to my brothers and sisters... I hope they love it as much as I did! I received the PDF of this book, Sammy and His Shepherd, to review and I will be receiving the print book once my review has been approved.

Sammy and His Shepherd

What a sweet story! Sammy (a sheep) meets a new friend whose life isn't as great as his. Throughout the book, Sammy tells his friend how great his shepherd is, how he takes care of the flock, how he can trust him, etc. Each two-page chapter takes a sentence from Psalm 23 and uses Sammy's relationship with his shepherd to demonstrate our relationship with Christ. Susan Hunt does a great job drawing the parallels between sheep and us. She clearly presents biblical principles and children will easily be able to understand the bigger message. Additionally a discussion guide for each chapter is provided at the end to help parents and teachers discuss the book with their kids. The illustrations by Cory Godbey are excellent as well. I received a free copy of this book from Reformation Trust in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Get this book!

I read this book from Reformation Trust. They sent me an electronic copy of the book, and they will send me the book for writing this review. I was not obligated by the publisher to write a positive review. As I have been thinking about Christian children's books, I have wondered about the proper way to introduce God to children. In our society, God is presented as just a being that will give you good morals, tell you that you are the best, and help you become a upright citizen in society. While there are many half-truths in this way of thinking, it is not the gospel. Using the same tactics that the serpent employed when talking to Eve in the Garden of Eden, we as the Church have thought that the best way to get parents to bring their children to church is to show that we are "good" people and that we will teach your kids good morals. But this thinking is wrong. There is nothing we can do to save ourselves. It is God who is in control. And so because of this and many other things that I have read in the Bible, I have figured out that the best way to introduce the gospel to little ones is to tell them of God's love and power. Now, you are wondering, "Why did he say all of this? Couldn't he just tell me what he thought of the book and be done with it?" I say this because the book that I am reviewing is exactly about God's love and power. This book takes kids through the 23rd Psalm and teaches them the gospel story through the story of two sheep and shepherd. This children's book is everything that is wonderful about what can happen when the writer of a children's book puts Christ into the book. This was a great book that even came with discussion questions for parents to over with with their kids! I can't wait to read this book to my children! What a great book! And the author did not try to kill kids with theology by adding big words. She simply presented the gospel in the form of a story. This is the best way to present the gospel because the gospel is not for the learned, the wise, the rich, or the strong. The gospel is for everyone! And especially those who are poor, foolish, and weak. So please buy this book and read it to your kids! I give this book a 5/5

Great bedtime and devotional book

Sammy and His Shepherd is a wonderfully written book by Susan Hunt that takes parents and children through Psalm 23. She breaks the Psalm line by line as she tells the story of a sheep and his shepherd. Each chapter includes one line of Psalm 23 and the story behind it through the eyes of the sheep, Sammy. The way the book is formatted is so helpful for children to understand the meaning of Psalm 23 and how it illustrates our Good Shepherd. This book is great for bedtime and family devotional time with young children. At the end of each chapter, there is a reference to a section in the back of the book called "Talk About It." In this section, the author elaborates and explores deeper into Scripture relating to the corresponding line of the Psalm. There are a series of questions relating to the story of Sammy and to our knowledge of and relationship to Jesus. Finally, this section ends with a discussion on how we can apply the lessons learned to our own lives. This book can have a great positive impact on the spiritual growth of young children. It is easy to understand and is a great illustration of Psalm 23. The addition of a "Talk About It" section in the back of the book makes it a great devotional book as well. This book will minister to parents and children for years to come. As a compensation for this review, I will be receiving a free copy of this book from Reformation Trust.

Sweet Psalm 23 story with theological depth

Sammy and His Shepherd is a delightful children's story illustrating the truths of Psalm 23. Outlined in sections by the phrases of Psalm 23, this book is a story of "Sammy" the sheep, owned and cared for by a loving Shepherd, who meets a sad and neglected sheep on the other pasture. Sammy notices the differences in their care, and as he befriends this lost sheep, he teaches her about the loving care he receives. One day, the lost sheep is in danger of losing her life, and Sammy's Shepherd does something wonderful for her. As the story unfolds, both sheep learn about trust and following the kind Shepherd. Susan Hunt does a fabulous job weaving in to the story both theological truths as well as facts about sheep--facts that enable children and adults alike to better understand the love and care of a shepherd, and more importantly, the Great Shepherd, Jesus Christ. For example, the story tells of a sheep who falls, with legs flailing helplessly in the air, and how the Shepherd comes to lift her up, rub her legs to restore circulation and help her walk again, thus "restoring" her. ("He restores my soul"). Sammy and His Shepherd illustrates not only of the love and tender care of Christ for His sheep, but also wonderfully pictures the themes of redemption, salvation, brotherly love, and eternity. I absolutely love how at the end of each section illustrating a phrase of Psalm 23, Susan Hunt includes a "talking point" page or two at the end of the story. These talking points include "what the Bible tells us" (added thoughts and Bible references), "something to talk about" (questions for discussion with your children), and "something to do" (ways to put truth into practice). The only element I was not crazy about was the color of the illustrations. They were child-friendly and unique, but the limited color scheme (lots of purple and pink tones) seemed more foreboding that comforting. Sammy and His Shepherd gets a five-star rating from me! I would definitely recommend hopping over to amazon.com and purchasing a copy for your child or as a gift! It can be profitable for so many ages and grade levels, and would be a great book to read as a family, too. I am receiving a copy of Sammy and His Shepherd for free, from Reformation Trust/Ligonier Ministries, as compensation for my review.

Sammy and His Shepherd, a review

Reformation Trust children's books are refreshing. Theological sloppiness is common in children's resources, but I've come to trust the material from Reformation Trust to be sound. I asked the author of Sammy and His Shepherd, Susan Hunt, how she ensures theological accuracy in her book. Susan Hunt is the wife of a retired PCA pastor whom gives support and helps with theological accuracy. In other cases Susan Hunt gets additional review from other pastors, friends, or the elders of her local church. In the case of Sammy and His Shepherd, she "had great confidence in the theological oversight of the Ligonier editors" and didn't see the need for additional oversight. I agree her confidence was well placed as I too have come to trust the theological oversight of the Ligonier editors. Susan Hunt takes us through Psalm 23 in a way both parents and children will learn from. Cory Godbey did a wonderful job with the illustrations, but the words to pictures ratio was a bit off to keep my two year old's attention. I'd recommend this book for ages 5 and up. I do not mention an upper limit here because even though this book is targeted for kids, tweens, teens, and even adults will find the book entertaining and enlightening. Sammy and His Shepherd is a allegorical tale where Sammy (a Christian) has a wonderful Shepherd (Jesus) and befriends a sheep with a bad shepherd (a lost friend). In each of the eleven chapters, Susan Hunt does a wonderful job of using the allegory to exegete a passage of Psalm 23. At the end of the story, Susan Hunt has provided us with a great teaching resource to use in discussing the book with our children. For each chapter we are given a section of what the Bible tells us, something to talk about, and something to do. Sammy and His Shepherd is a great story that will give both parents and children a deeper understanding of Jesus and Psalm 23.

Sammy and His Shepherd

This is an excellent book for children that teaches them about God's love for us through a simple story about two sheep. In the book, a sheep named Sammy, meets another sheep and befriends her. Sammy is loved and cared for by his shepherd but his new friend is not. The story has Sammy teaching his friend about his Good Shepherd and ultimately she is bought by Sammy's shepherd and she begins to learn for herself about the shepherd's love. The book includes a section for parents of questions to ask their children to help them understand how the story relates to our Good Shepherd. I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a book to read to their children that is solidly biblical, engaging, and well written.

Review of Sammy and His Shepherd: Seeing Jesus in Psalm 23

As a father of little ones, I am always on the look out for good children's books. As a student of theology, I also keep an eye out for Christian children's books with solid biblical and theological messages. Such a book, I believe, is Sammy and His Shepherd: Seeing Jesus in Psalm 23 (Reformation Trust, 2008), written by Susan Hunt. Sammy and His Shepherd is a simple story about sheep and shepherds. Sammy, a sheep of a good shepherd, meets and interacts with a sheep across the fence in the pasture of a bad shepherd. First named `My Friend' by Sammy, the unfortunate sheep is rescued, purchased, and given a new name--`Precious'--by Sammy's good shepherd. Though sometimes confused and afraid as a new member of the good shepherd's sheepfold, through conversations with Sammy and experiencing the good shepherd's faithfulness, Precious begins to trust him. Sammy and His Shepherd is at the same time an expositional exploration of Psalm 23. Each chapter's title is a phrase from the psalm and its episode explores the theme contained in that phrase. For example, in chapter eight--"You Prepare a Table before Me in the Presence of My Enemies"--Sammy explains to Precious that the good shepherd had prepared a `tableland' beforehand for the sheep, clearing a piece of land of harmful elements so that the sheep could graze and rest in the peace and safety he provides from their enemies. Sammy and His Shepherd is a wonderful book. It includes beautiful pictures (illustrated by Cory Godbey) that engage children, and its story is based upon faithful explanation of Scripture that Christian parents will appreciate. In addition, it presents Reformed soteriology, as in showing that Precious cannot save herself by getting through the fence that separates the sheepfolds of the good and bad shepherds, but needs the good shepherd first to come to, rescue, and redeem her. It even subtly teaches Reformed ecclesiology in showing that, as in Precious' case, sometimes coming fully to trust the good shepherd comes after joining the sheep of his pasture. Furthermore, it is a beautiful story of patient friendship exemplified by Sammy as he explains the life of a good sheep to Precious. Another strength to note is the "Talk about It" sections at the end of the book corresponding to each chapter that include additional Scriptures, discussion questions, and suggestions for actions to take in response to what was learned. Both child and adult will enjoy interacting with the themes of Psalm 23 in this story that ultimately point the reader to the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, and the salvation, protection, and rest he provides for his people. Our three-year old loves the book though it is a bit advanced for her and probably more suitable for elementary age children. The themes explained and the author's pedagogical approach, however, could be used with children of any age. The only thing that could enhance the story might be more excellent illustrations to engage the imaginations of young children as they read. The illustrations that are included, however, are wonderful and draw the child into the world of the shepherding themes used by the Psalmist. As such, and for the reasons stated above, I would recommend this book for parents who read Scripture with their children and desire to point them to the Good Shepherd. [Per the Federal Trade Commission guidelines, which took effect December 1, 2009, it must be noted that I received compensation for the posting of this book review, namely a hard copy of the book from Reformation Trust Publishing.]

a great book for parents and kids

Sammy and His Shepherd written by Susan Hunt and Illustrated by Corey Godbey is one of the best children's books I have read in a long time (though its great for adults too) . It is an illustrated look at Psalm 23 through the eyes of a little lamb named Sammy. Sammy gets to know another nameless sheep on the other side of the fence and share about his Good Shepherd. The book is divided into several short and teachable sections. Ending with a reference to the "Talk about it" section in the back of the book where parents can ask engaging questions about the story. The "Talk about it" reverences and section are the best integration of story and spiritual application I have seen in a children's book. Especially relevant is the "something to do" portion of each "talk about it" section where children are challenged think about their own actions and ask God to work in their lives to help them better reflect His Character. This was a great book and I would highly recommend it for parents and children alike. The book can easily be read over several nights. Though I imagine the book is geared for kids a little older, I read it to my 4-year-old daughter in one sitting (we will of course go back through it time and again at a slower pace)

Wonderfully rich

A wonderfully rich Gospel reminder and encouragement--not just for kids--but oh so very need for our grown up hearts too! Thank you, Susan, for this lovely book. I hope to reach for it year after year to read to my kids.

One of the best children's books...a must have

We purchased this book for our 2 1/2 year old for Christmas. I began reading it to her and found my 6 year old coming around to hear when I would read. I found myself becoming eager to read the next chapter. It is one of those books that come to life in your mind and the minds of your children. It has greatly blessed our family and I have no doubt that it would bless everyone who reads it.

Excellent parallels to the redemption story

I was very impressed with this book. It has excellent illustrations and draws a beautiful parallel to redemption using the words of Psalm 23 and the picture of a shepherd caring for his sheep. Kids will relate to the illustrations, and parents will appreciate the moral lesson taught in a scriptural manner, without the overly "preaching" tone.

Colourful and explains the story great

It's an excellent book for children. Would really recommend it to any family.

A beautiful way to teach...

This really is a beautiful book. It has helped my teaching of RE. The story is beautiful, the picture are beautiful and the children's responses to the book have been beautiful!

Thank you

Such a wonderful book
