Safari: A Photicular Book

It really is amazing technology. But like the saying goes about dogs talking or walking on two legs or however that goes... don't let your amazement that someone can do something distract you from the fact they are not doing it well. I feel like a creative person could find ways to make the motion solicit laughs or gasps. Just seeing an animal chew or walk is actually quite dull. Why not show some interesting moment or at least something educational? Basically, after the 'huh? How is it moving?' wears off, all you really have is a very few blurry pics of boring stuff. Much better to get a book of old fashioned high quality nature photos. And if you want to see the animals move, get a DVD. I'm afraid the baby we got this for will lose interest very quickly because novelty is all this book has going for it. I'm relieved at least we didn't dive right in and order the whole series.

I bought this for my 2-year-old niece, and she squealed delightedly with every page turn (see video). This was the most passed around and asked about Christmas present, including by my grandpa, because he wants the full series to show and share with his friends in his retirement community. The level of information is a bit much for toddlers to grasp, but you can still do rough estimates of how many toddlers tall and heavy each animal is and practice animal noises and identification with little ones until they can comprehend the more advanced words. Probably best to have adult supervision to prevent little fingers from picking apart the thicker pages.

This book is absolutely AMAZING! As you turn the pages the pictures "come to life" as if you are watching a short video! Normally when I purchase a gift on Amazon I just have them wrap it and send the gift directly to the person, but as a Christmas present I bought a few of these "Photicular" books and wanted to wrap them myself.. I was simply amazed when I looked through it! Even my Husband had to come over and see for himself. Not only would I recommend these as a gift, I would suggest having them be delivered to you first so you can enjoy them before you give them away! 😍

Received my Safari Photicular book quickly and I totally love it! In fact, not only am I fascinated with it, my husband and four year old grandson love it too. It feels like you're actually watching the animals run in the wild. I wish I could afford to actually see them in the wild, but for now Nat Geo and books like this fill the void. The book gives a quick blurb about the animal's size, habitat, diet, and population status and has a great feel and vintage look to it. The only complaint I have (reason for 4 stars) is that a proceed of the purchase does not go to help protect these beautiful animals. I just find that I'm much more aware these days of the purchases I make and whether or not they contribute to a greater good. That doesn't take away from the beauty of the book though. I'm pretty sure anyone you purchase this for would be fascinated with it and love it.

The book and the seller are both amazing. The first book had some damage, seemingly from the way it was packaged. I let them know that I was returning it, and, going to buy another one, and received the newest one the next day! How great is that. The pictures are lenticular, and, awesome to look at. Have bought this for one of the grandkid's Christmas presents. I know he's going to love this!

My 2 1/2 year old son LOVES this book. It has thick pages he can't rip, it has animals he recognizes and he can make them move easily. It has information about each animal which he may not care much about now, but I know this book will be on his shelf for years to come as it is sturdy and he will eventually be more interested in the detailed information about each animal. Worth the price and cheaper than many other stores I have found this book in. ***UPDATE JAN 2020*** 5 years late and my almost 7 1/2 year old STILL loves this book. It has held up. He has never been a kid that destroys things, but still, this book doesn't have a bend, rip, tear and looks brand new. Now that my son reads, he loves to read the details about each animal and still enjoys "moving" the animals. As I suspected, this book was one for the long haul! Highly recommend.

Marvelous, almost magical! A moving picture book. An updated version of the "Winkies" we grew up with. Eight African animals shown, mostly running. Accompanying text describes an actual, modern-day, Safari trip to a national game preserve in Kenya. Also, each animal picture is accompanied by enough facts and statistics for a school report. A wonderful gift for a middle school child, or anyone older. I think younger kids might damage it.

I have to say that this is an amazing book. The pictures seem almost magical, how the pictures move like film. It's like reading a book that a Harry Potter character would read. For each animal, the picture moves in motion according to how you move the page. Kids will find this book a fantastic item to look at.

The coolest book you will ever see. Definitely a coffee table book that will wow everyone. It looks beautiful, antique like on the surface, very classy. Then whe you open it and see the optical illusion of the movement of the animals, it's so very cool. I saw this at someone's house & just had to purchase one for myself. It also has very interesting facts about the animals on the page. I would recommend this to anyone. Don't let the price put you off, it's very well constructed.

This is just one more great volume in an outstanding series. You don't need to have the whole set in order to enjoy any single book. Each and every one of them is a stand alone hit with our family. Little ones love the movement. Early readers enjoy the read aloud non-fiction, and middle graders will love the content.

The book is amazing my only issue is that it arrived damaged and I purchased it new the spine had a tear in it and the front cover was also torn right next to the opening for the picture other than that this book is amazing.

My Grandson wanted this book for sometime at Bass Pro and when I decided to get it for him at Christmas they were sold out. So I found the authors name and by chance put it in a search in Amazon and it was there. I couldn’t believe it. Love these photicular books! This will be a gift; the child will be able to learn from this book at many age levels. The pictures will be fun to flip through and as she gets older she will enjoy being read to/reading the words. Great product. Great price on Amazon as compared to the zoo gift shop.

Bought this book for my 18-month-old niece and it's a great book. A tad bit on the expensive side given that there is less than 10 pages. But the effects on the book is wondrous. I, myself, was mesmerized when I first looked at this book the first day I got it. Probably would not buy anything like this again since it is a bit too expensive for me.

Found these on Amazon. They are amazing and so well designed and written. Bought all 5 of the series for gifts for grandchildren. We have been reading and enjoying them ourselves first. Like going to school in our 60s. Great quality.

An amazing, ingenious creation! Each page of this book comes alive with motion - like a paper video player - with an engaging animated clip of an animal in motion. What a wonderful way to learn about nature, or just to have a fun experience up close and personal with the great beasts of Africa. Already bought 2 copies as gifts for my daughter's friends, and watched many delighted reactions as grown-ups admire the copy I have on my desk at work. SUPER AWESOME!!!! If I could give it more stars, I would without hesitation. It’s exciting to watch the Animals walk or run across the page. It’s very informative, giving lots of great detail. Fun to read and learn.

My grandsons were fascinated by this book. The animals come to life as they turn the pages. A little pricey but well worth it for what you get.

I got it for my soon to be 4 year old son. He liked the animals moving but was not so interested in the rest of the book. I believe it’s a matter of time and he will appreciate it more! On the other hand, “mommy” really likes it!

I gifted this book to a 3 years old and he lived it so much he still has to sleep with it. I must confess my kids were jealous it was for someone else as they loved it too. It will be on Santa s list.

Original and attractive no doubt. I bought this for a school library and it was a perfect choice. The kids where thrill with the way each animal move with just no certain mechanism, for them magic. Although everyone was happy i sense the the mechanism and the content of the book were for different audiences, and this distract the attention of a good reader.

This book(and their other Photicular book, Ocean) is awesome! We have them at our house, and have given them as birthday presents to other kids, and it is always a hit! This is the kind of book that brings parents and kids together--everyone loves the "moving" pictures, and parents love that it's an engaging book for their kids that DOESN'T require new batteries weekly, or make annoying noises!

We bought this as a gift for a little one who loves animals and action books after seeing one at ToysRUs. Each moving picture has a page of text about the animal shown. Best for older children, as pages are thick (due to image insert) but fairly fragile in construction, similar to pop-up books. Text is very small and fairly technical, reading level seems like at least 4th grade. But totally fascinating for small children, could make a cool book to read together!

This book is awesome. I've never seen lenticular type pictures like this before. Really looks like they are moving around in the pictures. Bought one for an Xmas gift, and now back again for a bday gift. Might just get one to keep at home as well :) Definitely recommended!

The author took a concept that is not new, Lenticular Lenses, and integrated it into a book with stunning effect. When you turn the pages, the animals literally come to life. This has been a hit with everyone that sees it. In fact, I have made it a point to show anyone around. I deducted 1 star because it is short on content and carries a hefty price tag for it. I would still recommend it to anyone.

This book is amazing! First saw this at Disneys Animal Kingdom and price checked it, turns out Amazon was a tad cheaper so I waited to buy it online. It really makes it feel like you are watching the animals by flipping the pages! I plan on buying all of the different versions.

My wife and I purchased this book as a Christmas gift for our toddler, who was almost three years old when he received it. He is absolutely fascinated with this photicular book! He can sit for hours just moving the pages back and forth, watching the animals move around. The quality is superb and the pictures are well done. I can highly recommend the photicular books for your toddler.

This book is so cool! It's very educational, but at the same time entertaining. Love it! And my one year old loves it as well :) The binding and the cover are very nice. I have this book put in the living room for display, because the exterior is so cute.

My toddler grandsons love looking at this. When they are older I’m sure they will be more interested in the information in the book.

Just came back from Florida and saw this Safari book there. Could not buy and bring home as it was too heavy, so pleased to see it was on Amazon, only to find that it is now sold at Costco (you may not want to print this though). Price was very good online so not bothered. Book is just amazing and six month old grandson - Brayden, just loves the photo. Giggles when he sees them. Also bought the Ocean book - same great quality. Amazing books.

Purely magical and captivating, purchased as a moving on to middle school gift for a student and he was thrilled and his mother loved it!

I ordered three different Photicular kind of books for gifts, one for a grand child and two for her friends. They are wonderful. I showed this to 6 other people all of whom loved it. Two co-workers then ordered them for the children in their lives. The movement looks like something out of the Harry Potter's books that have the "moving pictures". Thank You.

This book is a work of art. It is beautiful.

This book is a wonderful invention but I do not recommend it for pre-kindergarteners - it will not hold their attention very long as there are only 8 'moving pictures' of wild animals. The book is also bulky and relatively heavy. Same remarks go for the other version entitled OCEAN.

The book was listed as "used in good condition". It is actually in very poor condition with several ripped pages, and two of the photicular images don't work. Very disappointed. I would have just bought brand new if the used description was accurate.

Great book great quality! Kids ages 2-10 loved it

This is an incredibly beautiful book. I fell in love with the copy we got from the library and promptly ordered two from Amazon - one for us and one for whatever lucky child next has a birthday party attended by my 6 year old son. The illustrations MOVE and the book itself is lovely. Inside you will find a cheetah, elephant, gorilla, and more. We were all enchanted and I would recommend this for any child (or adult?!) who loves the animals of Africa.

Lie it's companion, Ocean, this book is marvelous. The animals move through the pages like they might decide to step right out. There's such a treasure of information about each one that if you can turn your eyes away from the pictures, you'll find there's lots to learn. An amazing book.

This item was purchased as a Christmas gift for a young Great Grand Child. We won't know how he likes it until after Christmas, but he is a real smart little guy and loves to experience and study things around him. This should really keep him captivated. It looks like a very good quality book. The way the animals move should really interest him.

I bought our copy at Costco and I couldn't put it down... just kept opening and closing everything. It's a truly amazing beautiful work of art! My mother in law came over and saw it and wanted it but alas.. Costco no longer had it. Amazon to the rescue! Got it for her as a Christmas present. The only gripe I have is that since the pages were thick, one of them had a little rip but she was okay with it. Tsk task shipping people!

Photicular books move, that is the images within the book seem to move. Bought for my granddaughters, Safari is a constant source of delight because they don't have to read all the pages, just watch these amazing pages. I'm sure they are 4,6, and 7 year old learners.

These photicular books are wonderful! The kids like to make the animals run!

Grandchildren love to look at the pictures, they get a kick out of them all moving on the page. I keep it up and monitor them (age 2 and 4) so they don't wear it out looking at it and turning the pages.

The graphics in this book are incredible. The motion of the photos are amazing. The animals come alive.You can read and look at this book for hours. The write ups are informative and very well done. That is just a bonus for the visual beauty this book has. Dan Kainen makes books an education as well as captivating.

Love this book! Saw it in an airpot but did not want to buy and carry so I was xcited to see it on Amazon for a much better price. Great interactive book for all ages.

The cover is the best lenticular image. The others are ok, but not as good as the cheetah. My nephew was disappointed that there were only a handful of images. For the price I expected more...but it's still a pretty cool book and the kids do like looking at it...

I purchased this book originally at the Safari Park in San Diego, and was so impressed with it that I ordered 5 more for grand nieces & nephews as well as our grandson. I also preordered the next book, Oceans, for all of them as well. I wish I could give this 100 stars it's that amazing.

The kids love it

These photicular books are great for kids. Honestly I am entertained by them. The pages are very thick to accommodate the photo technology needed to bring each portrait to life as one moves the pages in the book. For the price it was a reasonable amount of pages.

This is intended as a gift for my granddaughter who's birthday is in a few weeks. So I don't know her reaction. However, I saw one of these books in the gift shop of the Phillips Museum in DC and just loved it. When I went online to buy it, I saw there were three books so I bought them all. I love them, if that counts!

Great book for kids

This is a beautiful book and was a big hit with my god-son and god-daughter. It is best for children from 1 to 5 I would think, but the adults loved it too.

This is a very well made, beautiful and unique book. I bought it for my ten-year-old godson. I would highly recommend this product.

This is a fantastic book. We first saw it at Disney World's Animal Kingdom. It is one of those things that needs to be seen. The animals moving on the pages is mesmerizing. We bought 2 as gifts for our daughters and their families. They loved them - even the teenagers. It makes a great book either for yourself or as a great gift for someone special - and at considerable savings over the list price. The shipping was prompt and the packaging good.

I bought this book as a gift to my friend who just had a new born baby. While some of my other peers questioned my decision to buy a book as a gift "Uh you know that books are like the worst gift right?" I was completely confident in my choice as I had thought about how this book may impact the rest of her life. First, as a small child/toddler whatever she will enjoy the pictures, moving pictures. Then her father and mother will read about the animals of the safari to her, strengthening the parent-child relationship. Then she can learn to read on her own, build reading skills that will be helpful the rest of her life. This is a real book, it will take time for the child to completely be able to read and understand, digest the material. Throughout this process she will also learn to appreciate wildlife, animals, and life. Now you think about this: fast forward to years later and the little newborn is now a young woman. One who has good relationship with her parents, who can read, and one who is kind and loving, because a person who likes animals, appreciates nature and understands the value of life is probably going to be kind and loving. Through this gift, I have prepared this little girl to be great girlfriend/wife material. Her dad is gonna be busy keeping the guys away.

Very cool book! Everything about it is nice.

I bought this for my godchild who is 7 years old and my husband who is alot older than that. My godson spent more time looking at this book than he did playing with the remote control monster truck i also got him. He was fascinated and it made me feel great. My husband loves looking at this book. I have taken it over and have been reading it. And it is a very accurate depiction of going on a safari - I can attest since we recently went to Tanzania Africa for our honeymoon. It was an amazing experience and this book is a great purchase.

My daughter - as well as I were captivated by the movement of the animals in the book. the book is also sturdy enough that she wont destroy it (she is 2yrs old). We have animal flash cards that she looks at and immediately recognises the animals in the Safari book, but now, they are animated. Now, that was cool i thought as it will keep her attention for a while. I look forward to other books that you would create, perhaps a series of animals, sea creatures etc...? I would buy it!

Not a book that has a million pages of info but it is a book worth a million. It is just fascinating to watch the animals "move" and enough info that tells you about each one. My whole family loved it...especially the younger ones!

I ordered this book off Amazon after I saw it in a novelty shop in Raleigh. My dad has been on one safari and is hoping to go for another, but he really loved the pictures. Also bought a copy for my husband-to-be for our anniversary. Consensus is, book is super duper cool, and looks great on any coffee table!

It's not your average book,it provides some animation similar to the newspaper in Harry Potter movies. Although quite thick it only has a few pages, about eight very thick pages, We are going to give it to one grandson for his birthday, and hope that he will enjoy the pictures now and be able to read it later. Compared to a ipad it might seem a little tame?. As for how long will it last-I don't know yet, the thick pages have moving parts that create the animation, so it will be less than average for book life, on the other hand there are only so many times that it can be looked at. For my use other than looking through it a few times it would become another just book on the shelf or coffee table. The pictures themselves are low resolution, so if that bothers you don't get this book. OK for the Amazon price, even better if you can get a used copy in excellent condition.

Very neat book! We purchased this for my little cousin and she loves the moving animals.

As with Ocean and Safari, this is a book that appeals to a broad group, from small children to near-teens. Great idea!

My sons were captured by the moving images on the cover and within the book and I was transported by the safari stories so well-written by Ms. Kaufmann. Both informative and entertaining - something for the whole family to enjoy!

The pictures are absolutely amazing. I bought it for my 2 year-old nephew(haven't given it to him yet), and my 7 year-old granddaughter wants one of her own. Even the adults(4 of them) in the house walk by and stop to look at all the cool pictures.

I recently bought this for my friend's little boy. This is one of the coolest books I've ever seen. Even as an adult, I thought it was so much fun. I've seen other books like this, but by far, this one's the best. Well worth the cost, as it's a tad high.

We actually saw this book at a bookstore in an art museum and my daughter fell in love with it! It was VERY expensive at this store and my husband and I ran home to find it. Amazon has a great price on it! It is so beautiful to look at and my daughter absolutely cherishes it!

We enjoy scanimation books because they are amazing, but this is incredible! If you can imagine watching a video on a page, that is what you'll see in this book about Safari animals. The movements of the animals are perfect in detail, some are awesome and others funny. My kids really like this book!!

It's not worth the money. It's REALLY awesome, don't get me wrong. And it's WAY better than the other lenticular books, because the images are amazing. But the pages tear pretty easily, which makes me sad that I spent so much on this book.

I have purchased this book (and the others in the collection) for several family and friends' baby showers/birthday gifts. The parents love them but the bonus is the kids do too - even a 2 year old was fascinated with looking at the pictures. Highly recommend these books!

This book is wonderful. My mother loves safari animals, and keeps this on the coffee table. Everyone loves watching the animals move, adults and children alike.

I was buying for several kids and had a hard time figuring out which to give this to. Turns out I was right; everyone loved it, kids and adults alike. I gave it to a five year old and his parents will have to read the narritive to him, but that's a good thing, right?

Christmas present for my 88 year old mother. She loves it and loves showing to others. The Safari version is more interesting than the Ocean version - land animals just move more.

Interesting, not what I was expecting. It's very cleaver the way the pictures move. The only problem is teaching the grandchildren to turn the pages slowly to get the best result.

This was the talk of christmas in my family. I don't know how they did it but as you turn the pages the animals look like the are alive and moving. The family and extended family couldn't get enough of this book. Really a great gift.

The book is a wonderful tool to get a child's attention. The caregiver can make up stories, move the page to let the animal move forward and backward, fast or slowly.My regret is not having discovered this gem much sooner, in time to entertain my own children. Now I show it to grandchildren and friends' children. Every home should have a copy.

Really cool book, but very disappointed that it was damaged.

I purchased this book for my grandson. He is an animal lover. One day he said he never has anything for show n tell at school. When I ask why not, he said it has to be something fragile??? I got him this book and he took it for show n tell and said all his friends loved his book best. I was glad to see such a happy expression on his face. tks

This book caught my eye at the local bookstore, and I found it online for much cheaper. It ended up being a great gift for my young cousins. Really cool coffee table book.

We have this and the Ocean edition and love them both. The pages dance when opened. This book is loved by both adults and children. Great coffee table books! Get both!

Great book! Purchased this as a gift for my 3 year old nephew. Not only was he giggling and excited to flip every page and see the animals, but all the adults were amazed and delighted too! Not only that, but it is well written as well. I secretly want to purchase one for myself.

Just as good as the Ocean version. Reading level is higher than elementary. Good book for bedtime sharing.

The book "Safari" has a tom off cover (from the book). When ordering it was not noted that the book is damaged or used. But shipping box OK.

As a 3D photographer, I really appreciate the book. The photos are fabulous, the content informative, and my grandson is still trying to figure out how it works!

I bought this as part of my grandson's Christmas gifts and the adults ended up looking through it! I also bought "Swing" and that was equally fun.

Super cool book! The pictures move and remind me of the newspaper photos in the Harry Potter movie. Not durable for really small kids, but awesome just the same.

i've given many as gifts, and everyone loves them ..they're so unique with the animals all afoot.

I would give this 2.5 stars if I could. It's a fine book -- the text is well written and the pictures are moderately interesting. Thing is, one loses interest in it about 2 hours (or at least this is my observation vis-a-vis the individuals of different ages in my household who looked at it). The photographs are reasonably clear (not great, but not at all bad). Based on glowing reviews here, perhaps I expected a bit more. Regarding the binding: yes, it's a bit flimsy. For normal (adult) use, it's fine. I would think twice about gifting this to anyone younger than 14-15 however.
