In Running Rewired, America’s leading endurance sports physical therapist and coach shares a program for runners to become stronger, faster, and more durable. Jay Dicharry distills cutting-edge biomechanical research into 15 workouts any runner can slot into their training program to begin seeing real results in about 6 weeks.

For better or worse, your body drives your running form.Running Rewired will show you how to shed old injuries, mobility problems, weaknesses and imbalances and rewire your body-brain movement patterns. You’ll rebuild your movement and transform your running within one season.

Through his work with athletes at REP Lab and top university sports performance clinics, Dicharry has found that strength training alone is inadequate for runners. To develop the four essential movement skills required for faster, safer running, runners must practice better movement as they build strength. In Running Rewired, you’ll use

• 11 self-tests for joint mobility, posture stability, rotation, and alignment

• 83 exercises to fix blocks, move with precision, build strength, and improve power

• 15 rewire workouts to amplify any training plan from 5K to ultramarathon

Dicharry’s Running Rewired combines the best of real-world coaching and a physical therapy approach to strength and mobility for better running. You’ll find your personal best running form and become a faster, more durable runner.

Make spiral bound a purchase option

The book is laid out with some explanation in the beginning: just right, not too much especially for someone who already has read many running mechanics articles and books. The drills, precision, and performance workout sections are excellent and laid out well. I only caught one discrepancy in the kettlebell swing about bracing the core. The tips section on that one contradicts the instruction. The only thing left desired with this book is the option to order it spiral bound because it doesn’t lay flat. Annoying when referencing during the workouts. Experienced athletes can just list the movements, but newbies to gym work will need the reference. No biggie, easy and somewhat cheap to get it done at a local office store.

Definitely helping me be a stronger runner

This book has great information and has been really helpful at directing me in my gym workouts. I'm glad to know the reasons why I'm doing certain exercises, and exactly how to test myself and improve my weaknesses. A few things were missing for me to rate it 5 stars. They are: - companion videos that demonstrate the exercises. Sometimes the pictures don't fully show me how to complete an exercise. - a section that lists all the equipment that I will need to perform the workouts. This would help me plan what I need to find at my local gym and/or what equipment I should purchase myself. - an app that holds the workouts so that I don't have to carry the book around the gym. And the app would include videos that demonstrate each exercise. - if not an app, then at least make this book with spiral binding so that I can carry it around the gym and keep my page. I currently use a bookmark to save my spot and weigh the book down with whatever I can find.

If only it came with its own personal training to put these intriguing suggestions and ideas into correct use.

I came upon this title sort of accidentally as I was buying the Hansen's Marathon Method and FIRST (Run Less Run Faster) books in preparation for some prospective races this year. Reading through it, I found it absolutely fascinating. But putting these ideas into practice seems completely overwhelming. I love data. And this book is full of data. I love ideas to improve my running technique. This book is full of ideas to do so. But the suggestions come with potential pitfalls. I'd love to try them, but I don't want to risk getting injured or making something worse. 11 self-tests for joint mobility, posture stability, rotation, and alignment (these are great, but maybe better performed with an input-providing partner) 83 exercises to fix blocks, move with precision, build strength, and improve power (choosing one to use - eek!) 15 rewire workouts to amplify any training plan from 5K to ultramarathon (I love this, but it takes away from my already on the edge of potential injury current workouts) In summary, I can't wait to read through this book again (and again) and hope to try some of its suggestions to improve my running skills, but the sheer volume of information is as awesome as it is overwhelming.

informative but convoluted

I do think that this book has a lot of great information about form and the exercises needed to improve upon it. However, it is a bit tough to figure out where you should actually apply the information without being able to talk to a running trainer. I don't think I am the only one who would have a challenging time trying to figure out which of these stretches and workouts to add to my training, because there are a ton. Without someone to analyze my form in person I am afraid I would be wasting time with a lot of these exercises that don't personally apply to me.

loved it, and was looking forward to reading this ...

I strength train competitive distance runners, a number of them former D1 athletes working towards Olympic trial qualifying times. I've been helping them stay injury free during their training cycles and have been using lots of Jay's principles. I read Anatomy for Runners, loved it, and was looking forward to reading this book. This book has come in very handy and has helped me develop an effective strength program for my athletes. After 6 months, my athletes have gotten significantly stronger, their gait and running posture has improved, speed has improved, and above all they have stayed injury free despite high volume mileage and rigorous training schedules. I'd highly recommend this book to all runners. If you are plagued with injuries because of running chances are you need to work on more strength training. This book is a great place to start. If you can find a trainer who also appreciates Jay's work and can help you implement a strength program, even better. Thanks for sharing this book with the world, Jay!

A lot of detailed information

I will agree with another review in that this would be very helpful in a binder form. I downloaded it on Kindle and would opt not to do that again and have a hard copy available as you'll be bookmarking and flipping back and forth a lot. I also think you need to already have a fairly strong knowledge base in some elements of physio work in general. It would be helpful to have someone really knowledgeable bring you through many of these moves first to make sure you're doing it right. The downside is what could be considered an overwhelming amount of exercises and information.

Great info with great graphics

I bought this bok while I was suffering from overuse injuries during my first half training cycle. I didn’t realize at the time what I had done, but I knew I was in some pain but wasn’t sure what the deal was. This book helped me figure out what was going on, some exercises to relieve some of the pain, set me on the path to recovering, and how to prevent in the future. There is a lot of information here, but it is well-organized and very easy to follow. There are so many color photos of people doing the exercise that it really helps you get a handle on what to do. For me, hands down the most valuable part of this book are the charts and diagrams. If you are a visual learner like me, it really helps boil it down to easily understandable concepts.

Up Your Run Game

Purchased for my wife as she gets more and more into running. She's been a huge fan of this book. It's helped her better understand numerous pieces of her running. The photos and step-by-step instructions help form better habits and understand how to increase running performance. It's a great reference that can be read cover-to-cover or browsed specifically for the areas you need help. A great resource for anyone looking to improve their running performance.

Practical Guide to Better Running

So far so good. Just received the book a few days ago. It has some incredible exercises that I have never seen before. Some are familiar and some, for me, are incredibly hard! I know my hips are not stable and for that, I am injured a lot recently. The book has good explanations of the exercises, then it puts them into specific routines to be used within various training cycles which is very helpful. It would be nice to have a video companion for my phone, as paging through the book is cumbersome. I'll probably snap photos for ease of use while learning. Spiral bound would be nice as would pull out posters of the sequences. Some of the exercises are difficult to follow even with pix and descriptions, so more resources (and it's probably there already) would be nice.

A complete game changer.

I have been running and competing in triathlons at a high level since 1988, and after a long hiatus, I returned to running about 6 months ago. When I read the preview for this book, I was interested. When I started reading the book, I was hooked. This has completely changed how I run, to the point that my shoe choices have changed. Specifically, as I have dutifully followed the advice in the book, I gained specific strength and mobility that I never had before. Now my support shoes have become too rigid, as I corrected weaknesses in my body. By this book! Read it, read it again, follow his advice, get a highlighter, and embrace what he has to offer. It will significantly improve your running, while reducing your chances of injury. If this author ever offers a clinic that follows the book, I will definitely be interested.

I had high hopes

As usual I was bee excited to get this book hoping it would be the thing to end my nagging running injuries, I think it might if I could figure out what I’m supposed to do. There is a lot of useless analogies and explaining how your body works but not enough instruction, how long am I to do the beginning exercises I worked on them for an hour and am only halfway through. When do I stop them and switch to the workouts at the end of the book? Also there are some I can’t do because the directions are too confusing. I will stick with it as best I can I think the guy knows his stuff

Read this book!

This is a must read for anyone who wants to better understand running mechanics and how to run smarter. Jay explains difficult concepts in an easy to follow, logical manner. He is an amazing author....

The New Testament for Runners

This easily digested volume for the mechanics of running will take you step-by-step to a more comfortable and competitive run. Whether you run for fun, sport or serious competition; the basics and details are here for the taking. I took away immediate pain-free workouts after only a few days doing the applications recommended...for me, relieving the anxiety of pain after-effects was worth thousands.

Made me rethink running as a long time runner

I bought this book after getting a recommendation online. I love it. I love the approach they take to explain running. I love the layout of the book. I love the workouts they provide for both base training and race training. I bring it with me everywhere, and now incorporate most, if not all, of the training into my running training. It also has helped alleviate some of my running aches and pains by helping me to strengthen weaker muscles. (Please, see a doc if you are injured. This is not a substitute.)

Invest in yourself, not your shoes.

Thorough, concise, great photos. I’ve been a competitive runner for 25 years. Buy this if you want to get stronger, more efficient, and healthy. Invest in yourself. It’s gonna cost you a fraction of the cost of fancy, overpriced and overhyped running shoes that promise the moon and fail to do anything but drain your wallet.

Very helpful exercises for mobility, stability, and strength

This book will definitely be helpful for any runner or athlete. Lots of great exercise suggestions to make sure that you avoid injuries while running. I don't know why some of the other reviewers are complaining about needing a trainer/PT to do these exercises... why did you buy a book if you actually want a trainer? Many of the exercises are quite simple, and with things like squats, he gives you modifications/suggestions to make sure your form is good.

Love. This. Book.

This is a great book with pertinent information and awesome workouts for clinicians and recreational runners. I am a physical therapist and I use this as a reference for my patients and myself frequently, as do the other PTs in my clinic.

Highly recommended!

This is a well written and clearly outline book. The author breaks down complex neuromuscular principles and makes them easy to understand. It will appeal to both the lay and professional (rehabilitation and athletic training) populations. Highly recommended!

Way too much

My goal was to use this book to integrate additional strength and flexibility exercises into my training routines. There is just way too much information and workouts for me. This is a book best suited for very serious athletes, trainers and coaches.

Yes!!!

The book is about why. I don't like doing things just because other do things. Learn what to look for and why we need to do things. Be smarter!!

Great resource

This book is great for understanding how to get back into running. It outlines the exercises you need and the training plan you can adopt to get back out there. Or if you're already a runner it drops a bunch of knowledge bombs you could still learn from. I recommend it to all my friends.

A must have if you are a runner or just staring.

The way Jay explains the mechanics of running is amazing. The book has some self-assessment tests that allow you to figure out your areas of improvement. I wish I had it when I began running year ago.

Interesante

Five Stars

As advertised

10/10 recommend this for any athlete, not just runners

I’ve dealt with shin splints and calf strains- this book eliminated that. Spends a lot of time explaining the how and why behind running mechanics, and the examples couldn’t make it any more clear. Gonna keep these workouts in my back pocket.

Dicharry

Preach it Dicharry preach it my brother. Run train core strength stability mobility power. No crushing of cans other than the beer can over your forehead at the end if the race.

Disappointing book!

I haven't read this yet, but flipping through it, all the exercises are one I've seen before. I was hoping for new stuff. Really disappointing.

Book did not arrive new

Love the content of the book. However, the cover and pages are bent upon arrival making it appear used. I'm not happy that I paid for a "new" book that arrived beaten up.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book!

Want to run injury free in the new year? Add this book to your holiday list. Or better yet, just buy it now. I went out of my way to meet with Jay Dicharry last summer. It was time and money well spent. He is amazing and an expert in his field. A lot of what you would learn from meeting with him in person is in this book. He explains form issues that plague most runner and (most importantly) how to fix them with detailed photos and exercises. Get this book and keep running!

Great book, well written and easy to understand

Great book, well written and easy to understand. Really helpful for those who are in an injury cycle. This book helps the reader drill down to the weaknesses that are behind those injuries.

Good read for minimalist/barefoot runners.

Great book! Really enjoyed the read and the exercises are great!

Good book for beginner runners

Still reading through it but so far it has helped me climb my mileage without getting hurt. Professional advise for someone who doesn’t want to spend money or time at a physical therapist.

Great book

Great book

Help to recover from injury

One of the best running books I've read. After repeatedly having the same injury finally some insight as to why.

Book Purchase

Great book condition. It is really brand new. Will purchase again with this store.

Great book!

Great book for runners at any level.

Love Jay Dicharry

Love Jay Dicharry. Has a lot of great info. Great for beginners or experienced runner. I am a coach and found it very useful

Buy this book!

I'm absolutely sold and so wish I lived closer to meet him in person. As a marathoner for the last 20 years it seems I am constantly plagued by injury. I am ready to stop this pattern and am willing to do what it takes to be the best, least injured runner that I can be. I don't have health professionals in my area that seem to truly understand running and I am often not convinced that the treatment & recommendations that I receive are the best and therefore am reluctant to follow. I am 100% convinced that Jay Dicharry does have the answers for runners and I have been spending the time needed on his program and can already see a change. Do yourself a favor and read this book!

Jay Dicharry has done an excellent job of building on his first book and addressing ...

Jay Dicharry has done an excellent job of building on his first book and addressing a main criticism, which was that it was hard to piece together all of the education/exercises into a straightforward training regimen. He answered this and then some in Running Rewired. Not only does he create multiple workouts for readers to chose from or cycle through, but he outlines exactly when and how often to do them, as well as appropriate recovery time and integration into a training schedule for a goal race. There's no magic bullet in this book for how to be a better runner. Improving your running form and economy (and decreasing injury risk!) takes time, there's no way around it. If you're willing to make it a dedicated part of your training, this book makes it very attainable. My advice for anyone who finished the book without really being sure how to implement it - seek out a physical therapist or other trained professional that you trust who can help you learn the exercises and organize a training schedule. It'll be worth it!

Excellent resource

Great book with useful exercises

in this book and others like it, and the more I run

The more I read, in this book and others like it, and the more I run, the more I'm convinced that posture and running form are keys to injury-free or injury-less running. Theory aside, the book is full of exercise routines to test and cure what ails your running. And, like every other running book or article I've ever read, these routines all take only 10 minutes to complete, (if you believe a cow can jump over the moon). :)

Every runner should own this

This book is perfect. So comprehensive and yet concise. There is so much information out there (a lot of good info too!) but it can be hard to parse it out. But Jay is clear and effective in his writing and this book is a game changer. Very handy guide at the end showing various workouts to implement the strategies in the book too! Just great.

Good Information

I think the author has helpful stuff to say, but I think this book would be awesome paired with a seminar/workshop -- rather than just alone. Some parts were less clear.

Five Stars

Well written way of rethinking how you run, and fixing your issues with real science and practical exercises.

If you would like to permanently get off the running injury merry-go-round, or just want to achieve new PRs, the info in this b

I've been looking forward to getting my hands on Running Rewired since I first heard it was in the works! A little background: I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Jay Dicharry during my residency training at UVA. Through my medical career I've worked with many brilliant people, but Jay is rather unique in that he not only has a deep understanding of the science and research, but he is also a great hands-on clinician and an excellent teacher. He can succinctly explain rather complex concepts and uses great metaphors to relate these ideas to anyone. I've built my medical practice around helping runners using much of the knowledge I've learned from Jay. His first book, Anatomy For Runners, has been my play book for many years. I've read it several times and still learn something new each time I open it. I think Running Rewired picks up where Anatomy left off. He briefly reviews several of the main concepts as related to running form and training, but expands on these concepts in helpful ways. While Anatomy is a longer read and goes a bit deeper into some of the underlying theory of running mechanics and rehab, Running Rewired is more meat and potatoes and will likely serve many runners better. (you don't need to read Anatomy for Runners before getting this book, but if you are really into running mechanics knowledge then you should get both) He explains the underlying mechanics of efficient movement in the great teaching style he is known for, and then also very clearly shows you how to achieve these better mechanics. The exercise pictures and explanations make it easy for anyone to learn these moves. There are also multiple specific workouts included to improve efficiency, and running specific strength and power. I've already seen many of the concepts, exercises, and drills included in Running Rewired help my patients resolve injuries and typically improve performance at the same time. I know we'll get even better results implementing more ideas from this book. This book should be a must read for coaches and clinicians who work with runners. Or if you are a runner who would like to permanently get off the running injury merry-go-round, or just want to achieve new PRs, the info in this book would be a great place to start!

Three Stars

Interesting but lacking more specifics for an advanced runner.

A great book for all athletes

I am a cyclist and found information in this book extremely helpful. I learned how to drive pedals from my hip in two weeks. For the same 160 Watts output, my heart was beating at 143bpm before and 130bpm now. The toe yoga also alleviates my numb toes during long rides. The stretches and exercises in this book are spot on. I had problem with my left shoulder for months and the traditional pec minor wall stretch didn't help. The floor supported method in this book solved my shoulder problem completely. Lastly, all cyclist should read the alignment section before using clipless pedal! Overall, a well thought and organized book.

Short workouts to take your running to the next level while staying healthy.

We learn how to type, shoot basketballs, ski, etc, but ignore the basic building block of so many sports: how to run. After years of on/off running due to injury, the simple drills in this book took me from running like a cyclist (pulling the ground under me and overloading my calves) to pushing using my glutes. I’m now a more powerful AND efficient runner. And my calves don’t hurt after long runs the way they used to! Beyond that, the strength training and precision workouts in this book are great for avoiding injury and running faster than ever. In a few short weeks, my core stability and body awareness, not to mention pure power, is already improved. What else can a runner ask for?!

Impressive Blend of Theory and Practice

At minimum, I think this is a worthy follow-up and complement to the author's Anatomy For Runners. But beyond that, this book does an impressive job of balancing theory and practice to support a methodical progression toward running better. Yes, you get a bunch of specific movements to practice - enough to be a little overwhelming, at least if you're looking to start addressing all your running problems all at once. What's different here is that the movement/exercise 'prescriptions' are introduced in thematic groups according to what specific aspect of your movement patterns they're meant to address (running posture, stability and power in the hips, etc.). Later in the book they're grouped into actual targeted workouts inside a larger workout program, which is great - and I think all the more effective in that you've had the chance to learn for yourself why and how these exercises work together and why you should do them. So if you're looking for a couple of quick tips to fix your run in the course of an evening, this isn't the book for you. But if you see all this as a process that's worth some time and serious thought on your part, I think you'll find this an excellent resource.

I can't believe how quickly I made healthy spaghetti noodles ...

I can't believe how quickly I made healthy spaghetti noodles for the family. And clean up with just rinsing and no big Appliance to get out.

The print edition is worth it!

Beautiful graphics, great tests, flip-through page headings, and the print edition has an index

Great book. I especially appreciated how included several self tests with specific recommendations depending on the results.

I love it

A whole lotta running goodness packed in this book

As a Physical Therapist, Runner, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, I thought I had seen it all, read it all, done it all. BUT this book actually expanded my running and strength and conditioning base and will no doubt pay off for me and for my patients and clients. I originally checked it out of the local library a few days ago but it was so good, I just purchased my own copy. I've already been integrating some of the tests and exercises into my own routine and into my patients plans of care. I could understand some of the points of the 4 star reviews, spiral bound would be better, maybe adding adjunct materials for those less knowledgeable in exercise performance, but as far as I'm concerned if I got as much as I did in this stage of the game for me well the author deserves the full 5 stars. Great pictures, layouts, and I love the workout routines he created in the back of the book. The plyometrics were especially good. I will no doubt integrate A LOT of this into my already solid foundation and looking forward to the personal and professional results.

Excellent

The book is great for the runner trying to improve and provides tools for trainer/coach.

wish I had this knowledge when I started running

I have read advanced marathoning, finding my way, listened to 100s of hours of training podcasts and audiobook of endure by Alex Hutchinson and how bad do you want it by matt Fitzgerald. I also have a reasonably good knowledge of anatomy and run 60-100km a week. I was hesitant to buy the book as I heard about it on a podcast and thought the author had given away pretty much the whole book during that and maybe there wouldn't be much in it for me. however I was wrong and still gained a lot from reading the book. you can test your mobility at home for any issues, will learn the proper running form, will learn how to exercise properly to supplement running performance by strengthening many aspects of your anatomy, both muscle and connective tissues. a lot of the latter part of the book focuses on the exercises recommended to improve running performance with good pictures, a lot of these only need very simple equipment for running focused compound exercises and dynamic movements, plyometrics etc. I just think that at the price of one private trainer session, and in comparison to a physio consultation down the line, this book is worth the cost. I would still say the cost is quite high for the length of the book; the author is succinct though, and there is value in that. quite evidence based too. importantly, he explains the relevance of doing the workouts and therefore they becomes a lot more appealing. it isn't a running training guide but it supplements those like Daniels/Advanced Marathoning etc.

Gym equipment needed.

I liked the tests included in the book and some of the information is interesting. Some of it isn't new but I expected that. The drills are also useful. I'm sure all of the exercises would be of benefit if I could spend a lot of time in the gym. As I don't have any easy access to a gym/gym equipment a lot of the book is irrelevant. I was hoping for more ideas for exercises to do at home so was disappointed in this respect. If the synopsis had stated this I probably wouldn't have bought the book. If someone has access to gym equipment it'll be a useful book to own I imagine.

Worth every penny and then some!

Heard about this book on a podcast and bought it. Read it from cover to cover, then did all the recommended ' self-tests' and am working my way through the recommended exercises. Definitely picked up noticeable weaknesses during the tests and can absolutely see and feel the difference now that I have been doing the routines for a few weeks. I am actually running again!

Take your running to a higher level.

Great book. The first one I have read that focuses on technique and not just strength. The author explains exactly why you should do the provided exercises, which personally makes me much more likely to do them. Given how difficult they were at first, it's clear I was a bit lacking in stability in certain areas, but they do get much easier once you get the muscle memory. I've been following the suggestions for around 6 weeks and feel quite different when I run and walk. It's also good for general posture.

Not just a "Must read" .... it's also a "Must do, will do " Book

THE BEST BOOK I have read on how athletes can properly improve running economy, avoid injury, train better and achieve their potential

Great exercises for runners but rewiring is a different thing

I give 3 stars because the content of the book does not meet the "rewiring idea". I could give 5 stars if the title was Great Exercises for Runners. It's a nice selection of exercises for runners, but the rationale and reasoning for rewiring your runnning (which is the purpose of this book) it is not evidence based. Rewiring (using brain plasticity) is a very different thing!

Better than visiting my physio and costs less!

I started running about 9 months ago and have been suffering with pain in both my knees for about 6 months (but I don't wanna quit running!) This book has more help and information than all the searches I've done on the net and all the trips to the physio combined. Amazing amount of information to help figure it all out. So glad I finally got round to buying it!!

best running book I have read

This explains the mechanics of running so clearly and then gives you a series of exercises you can do to address your own imbalances. Very clear with good diagrams and photos. The best book to read if you want to understand running technique better.

Good advice throughout the entire book.

Easy to read with great advice on how to improve running. Great read for the more serious runner.

Excellent training book for all levels of runner

Really enjoyed this. Loads of great training ideas in the S&C area as well as full training programmes to help with running form.

Great buy

Amazing book. Well written and plenty of illustrations and ideas. Best of all running books I've bought

Excellent book to improve running style

Love this book. Helped me get over injury and avoid them generally

Very informative

Full of excellent advice & can be dipped into when needed

Principles well explained, let down by bulky training program

The author does a great job explaining what it takes to improve ones running form. He even gives the readers some self-assessments to determine which measures are useful for them. According to the description, there are 11, but I counted only 8 or something like that, so he obviously had a more generous understanding of what counts as a self-assessment. The main problem though is the actual program: It is extremely complicated. There are lots of exercises, (30-40 if I had to guess, did not count them), which is anything but simple. And a good training program should be simple. Additionally, a lot of the exercises require gym equipment, so they aren't just complicated, they are also hard to fit into training. I suspect that the training program is so complicated because the book would have been rather short otherwise, which would have disappointed readers. If you are not interested in the concrete training program, this book is probably not for you because the training program is about 1/2 of the book (I wasn't exaggerating when I said it was complicated).

Excellent book with uncommon wisdom

Excellent book with uncommon wisdom. I have read close to 40 books on running, but found quite a few new gems like on stability against twisting force, the relative value of precision and performance workouts and how to blend them into running routine...also what not to do (at least as far as running is concerned: very important)!

almost a manual

Hi is an authority in this field. This book is more to the point than his first one, but in modern times it could make use of links to videos. It is always cumbersome to have exercises described in words...

Strength training for runners

Sensible guidance for running focussed strength training to reduce the chance of injury and improve performance. Particularly like the advice on how to best fit strength training into periodised training and the included strength programs are really useful and easy to follow!

Running has no more secrets

Started this book with few notions on running, now I feel like I could teach people how to run. Definitely a must-read. I have also read anatomy for runners, first book of the author, great too

efficace

Concise concepts & good training programs

I enjoyed his previous book but this was far more digestible. Easy to follow & access programs & clinical reasoning for exercises chosen. Great resource.

OTTIMO LIBRO

Running boock

Interesante si te gusta correr
