Album art is indelibly linked to our collective musical memories; when you think of your favorite albums, you picture the covers. Many photographers, illustrators, and art directors have become celebrities from their album artworks―the best examples of which will go down in history as permanent fixtures in popular culture.
Paying tribute to this art form, Rock Covers brings you a compilation of more than 750 remarkable album covers, from legendary to rare record releases. Artists as varied as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Sex Pistols, Pink Floyd, The Cure, Iron Maiden, and Sonic Youth are gathered together in celebration of the cover art that defined their albums and their cult status. Each cover is accompanied by a fact sheet listing the art director, photographer or illustrator, year, label, and more, while nearly 250 records that marked particular turning points for a band, an artist, or the music genre, are highlighted with short descriptions.
This far-reaching catalog of visualized rock is contextualized with insider interviews with five professionals who shaped the history of rock, and by top-10 record lists from ten leading rock collectors.

only about 1/3 of the album covers in the book have any real information
I bought this book and it is big (you will never be able to read it at night in bed), has beautiful pictures, but only about 1/3 of the album covers in the book have anything else except: "artist, title, year, label, art, photo," or some variation thereof. The other 2/3 have no explanatory text. Why this is so is unknown. E.g., on pages 124-125 we have: "Crass," "Stations of the Crass," with explanatory text; "Cream," "Disraeli Gears," with explanatory text; and "Creedence Clearwater Revival," "Green River," with no text at all, just the "artist" etc, which IMO is one of the most beautiful and iconic album covers you will ever find. (Long live CCR, one of the best bands ever from the Bay Area). Most pages have three album covers, with only one with text. So the information in this huge book on the music artists and art artists is skimpy (at least compared to "100 Best Album Covers.") The best book I have found for information is "100 Best Album Covers" (1999) by Storm Thorgerson & Aubrey Powell. (See my review of same). "1000 Record Covers," (2001) by Michael Ochs, is really just about that, with artist, label, year, design and photo, with little, if any text. But you will find some album covers here that you will not find anywhere else, especially from the 1950's. (which is also published by Taschen). "A Brief History of Album Covers," (2008), if OK, but flawed. It has a lot of information on the music artist but only some entries have information on the art artist at all. E.g. pages 72-73 "Grateful Dead's" "Aoxomoxoa" L.P. cover from 1969, which had no information at all on the artist Rick Griffin. (See page 22 of "100 Best Album Covers" for this information.) Honestly, I would buy "100 Album Covers" first, and the any of the other three album cover books. For sheer size and beauty you can not beat "Rock Covers," (2014), but the information on the artists included in this book is a little light.
Awesome... came damaged
It's an awesome product and my dad LOVED this birthday present. However, who on Earth packaged this for delivery? It came in a strange, crumpled up bag (no box or anything) and the ears of this had damage. Don't get me wrong, the book gained a cool "slightly worn" look, but I paid for new and I expected new.
Just simply a GORGEOUS product
I'm almost 50. That means I grew up with actual records and I'm a stubborn bastard and so I STILL mostly buy and listen to vinyl. This book, for a person like me, is a dream. Heavy, sturdy, beautifully designed, immaculate paper, stunning reproductions of album art...everything I could want (I know some people want track listings, liner notes, etc... I could care less... I have almost all these albums so I can get that stuff there) is here. Endlessly pleasing.
One for the ages!
Crazy heavy book! This is gonna take some time to get through but so far very detailed. I agree with another buyer when saying that the track listings should have been included! With that being said, the book is worth every dime!
Impressive collector's item
This book was a big hit with my boyfriend. It's a great gift for the hard core rock fan! Wish there was a little more commentary with the pictures, but still one of the best table books I've ever seen.
Table book colorful fun!
So love this book, yes I remember so many of these artist album art! This is a big book, looking forward to reading it, mostly just looking at pictures. Beautiful color!

Very nice book that weighs a ton
Very nice book that weighs a ton. I know this book is about album cover art but what would have made it perfect would be the song listings for the albums.
Great for music enthusiasts!
Given as a gift for my husband. He’s a huge music lover and very much appreciated this gift!
Excellent
Excellent coffee table book for the classic rock enthusiast. Beautiful and substantial...not some flimsy softcover.
If you have money to spend, buy this book, Otherwise don’t buy this.
I was not impressed with the LP cover selection for this book. It seems that Many of the chosen covers were picked for just been outrageous. Numerous of great LP, and Artwork are lacking in this book. Not to mention the albums and artist information, not much info. Was provided for the reader.
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
This is a Christmas present. My husband will love it
Excellent for any Rock'n Roll fan!
A great coffee table book celebrating the art of rock'n roll album covers! Quality of the paper is great, as well as the print and image quality. This book is hardcover. Perfect for any true rock fan.
Inclusive but Not Comprehensive
If you miss the large-form LP format (and the amazing art that it engendered), then this is the book for you. Although some of the images are a bit smaller than I might wish, a good deal of them are presented in near life-size form and the color reproduction and crispness of the images are very good (things that, if done wrong, would have really undermined the book's effectiveness). One last caveat: this book is inclusive (featuring both the obscure and the obvious) but it is not comprehensive. There will be albums that you will be amazed did not make the cut.
Fantastic.
Absolutely love it. If you are a fan of rock and roll you must and get it.
So COOL!!!!
Great gift for any age music lover. My 70 year old brother in law thought it was excellent.
Well done

Great book and great price!
Wonderful book!
Beautiful book, with amazing detail. It is rich, detailed, and chock full of cover art history. My only warning to you is: It weighs a LOT. On the up-side, it makes for fun conversation when you give one as a gift. :)
More Text IN ENGLISH!
The only thing that makes this book less than perfect is the fact that so few album covers are written about. 3 languages... Obviously not necessary!

Nice book but THIN on information
This book is well made, very thick, and nicely presented. The images are nice and it is set up in alphabetical order (although some are perplexing, such as "Vah Halen" under "H"). My biggest issue is that the majority of the records do NOT have any explanation. Just a picture, the band, name of the record and artist. Like, seriously, who cares? I was hoping for information about each record - why the art was chosen or how it was created. Far too many are just an image and band/year/artist information.
There's been several books on classic rock album jacket art ...
There's been several books on classic rock album jacket art, but none have been published with the quality and design flair that Taschen brings to Rock Covers. I admit I'm a bit prejudiced, as my design for the Claro Que Si album by Yello scored a full page, but it's been in other books and none measure up to Rock Covers. Rock Covers includes quotes from the designers--cool insights into the creative process. This is a must for fans of album art.
Eh, not what I expected
It’s a good quality book. But not many iconic album covers, and a lot of unknowns. I wish it had more recognizable covers, and more explanations to the covers. Most of it were bands I’d never even heard of. And they got full pages. And a few of the pages were bent and damaged.

Awesome item!....Thanks!
This was a great book and he was memorized for hours
This book was for my 26 year old son who loves the 70ies band. This was a great book and he was memorized for hours.
Awesome!
So much cool information. Great quality!
A grab bag of treats for the rock fan
The compilers of this book set themselves a task which they couldn't win. Thousands of albums have been released and it's inevitable that personal favourites would be omitted. I looked in vain for 'Dare' by The Human League, 'Down by The Jetty' by Dr Feelgood, 'Faust' by Faust, 'Lexicon of Love' by ABC, 'It Takes a Nation of Millions' by Public Enemy....the list could go on. I suppose this is inevitable as the brief of the book means that a lot of fine work in the jazz, pop, hip-hop and dance genres are overlooked. If Taschen are looking to cover these genres then I'm happy to act as curator ;-) The other slight failing of the book is by listing them alphabetically there's no overriding narrative of the development of the album cover from cheesecake head shots in the 50s through the development of a more opaque graphic design in the late 60s as the album became the format of choice through to the revolution in design from punk and beyond. Ideally it would be great to have individual designers, Hipgnosis, Peter Saville, Vaughan Oliver etc showcased within rather than the pick and mix approach the book chooses. However this shouldn't detract from what's here, a highly attractive (and very large) coffee table book, which demands to be dipped into. The excellent near album size reproductions which will soon have you grabbing the real thing from your shelves or heading to Spotify to stream it.

This was a Christmas present for my son who used to have many of these albums, and was delighted with it.

Arrived damaged
The book itself is great, exactly as described, it is large, heavy and beautiful pictures. However the book arrived damaged, it was clearly not shipped carefully. The edges of the entire cover and back are smushed in, and the corners folded inwards. It looks like the book was thrown heavily into walls which ruins the overall quality of the book. It was bought brand new, but it looks like it was heavily worn and used. I cannot find a way to contact the seller to get a replacement, and I am not sure if the replacement would be in any better condition.
It's a Brick
Good shipping time, the book is in perfect condition. It is EXTREMELY heavy, am sure it will be a perfect gift.
Beautiful book
This literally arrived one day after I ordered it. This book is very heavy - and it's beautiful. I bought it as a gift for a music lover.
Perfect 10/10 wow!
Wow!! So amazing I can’t believe it. I thought I would have a book with a few hundred pages , but this is a brick just a brick the book in gigantic you would pay 2/300$ in a book shop. Once again amazon amaze me!
Great gift but it is HEAVY!
Got it as a Christmas gift for my spouse and he loved it. It's a great big book with quality photos but fair warning, it's kinda heavy!
