Readers beware: The translation is horrific, ruins the story that I hold dearly in my heart
This is a melancholic spoiler free review. If you read casually or seriously, you will almost certainly be disappointed by the translation. Even someone who does not read at all may be put off by this, so I urge serious caution before embarking on your purchase. I have not read anything that contains such poor grammatical structure and diction to date, which baffles me at how anyone at the publishing company could have thought releasing this was acceptable. This translation is - at the time of writing this review - the worst I have encountered. I am telling you this as someone who has a wall of books behind me, has read countless novels, consumes stories published online by amateur authors (from sites that have low quality control), and tries to read at least one novel per week. This LN holds the record of the most poorly written piece of literature that I have encountered. Writing this makes my heart writhe in pain because of how much enjoyment I derive from the series as a whole and ranking it so low feels akin to driving a dagger into the heart of that which I love. The whole point of picking up the LN is to further elucidate the wonderful world and character collection that Tappei Nagatsuki has created. Instead, we receive the opposite. The descriptions are shallow, the dialogue makes it impossible at times to distinguish who is speaking, and scenes that exist in the animation have no detail given to it. The diction level is confusing. My friend (who introduced me to this series) warned me that light novels are designed for easy consumption and that I should not be expecting a wide-ranging vocabulary. This is perfectly fine, as my desires are to enjoy a well-designed story with rich characters. My confusion arises from the simplicity of words chosen which are juxtaposed to exotic ones. Whenever I encounter a new word that I am unfamiliar with, I always google it. I believe this is important for all readers as it is the primary way of both growing one’s vocabulary, and for allowing authors to succinctly elucidate their creation. However, there is a proper time to use new diction. It should make sense in the context it is used, and the few cases I did encounter a wider vocabulary choice in the LN, it felt forced. It was as if the words were selected for the sake of including an arbitrary word, rather than using it to augment the dialogue. This is antithetical to why we use such language! Punctuation choice becomes grating quickly. The biggest offender by far is the overindulgence in ellipses. It is not uncommon to see a sentence written with multiple ellipses, even outside of dialogue. This looks both amateurish and grates on my nerves as it implies either trailing off, or an implicit response query. Overuse is awkward and jarring, and by overuse I mean in every second or third sentence (let alone two or three times per sentence in a surprising amount of cases). I have never read any piece of literature that uses this many ellipses, and the effect on me as the reader is that the writer wants to use commas but has no concept that they exist. Have you ever written something rapidly, and upon proofreading you discover repetition of a certain noun or verb? When you read over your work, it becomes obvious that the sentence needs to be tightened up. There are countless examples throughout the LN where the sentence contains references to the same word three or more times, and it comes off sounding very awkward and unpolished. This is a recurring theme throughout the LN and becomes excessively jarring to read. The lack of description leaves my mind in an unpainted, blank slate. You cannot recommend this to anyone who has *not* watched the animated series because the characters will be a 'nothing blob' in their mind. While the pictures in the LN show you what some of them look like, it is not possible to picture the vast landscapes from either soulless, minute, or worse: absent descriptions. This is a great sin, as each of the characters in the show are unique, vivid, and possess great personalities. A LN is ripe for being able to expand on these dimensions, and failure to do so means readers who have not seen the animation will be missing a richness that I believe contributes to the wonderful world which has led so many reviewers to give this series such a high rating. I get lost when it comes to discerning who is talking. A lot of the text will have sequential quotations without indications of who is delivering the dialogue. This is a valid way of having a 1-on-1 conversation because it is clear who is speaking. However, when you introduce three or more characters, this clarity is lost for obvious reasons. It is also not as if one character has a method of talking that allows you to identify the narrator of the current text. I have read novels where there are multiple characters, but you can tell who is talking by the vernacular alone. This is absent in the LN, leading me to muddle through a conversation not knowing who is speaking to who, and left with having to piece together post-conversation who said what. From the examples I have listed above, these kinds of mistakes are almost nonexistent in standard novels. Such novels are also on average multiple times longer than this LN, yet the LN has countless offenses on virtually every page. There is no excuse when other authors can shell out a novel of 550+ pages while making none of these mistakes. I would also like to note that these problems are very likely specific to the English version. My friend who possesses a different translation informed me his reading was not plagued by such issues. I am too afraid to get the subsequent books in the series. I love the story but putting myself through reading this translation has been a chore to say the least. Would you have told me "they are re-writing this series with proper editing," I would be all over it in a heartbeat. Without hesitation I would pay double the price if this LN were properly crafted. I do not know how this was allowed to be published, my only explanation is that this series was rushed in its translation and the staff responsible for this publication are paid so poorly that they shoved it out the door so they can move onto the next item in their backlog. This is not how art should be treated, and I consider this a massive injustice to the series. This review pains me to write; I have given it 2 stars because every evening I must force myself read one of my favorite stories. Let that absurdity sink in for a moment. The only thing driving my progression (even though I know what is going to happen because I've already seen far beyond this LN) is my love for the series, and because I feel guilty having a "did-not-finish" book laying around. If the publisher ever reads this, please, contact me if you rewrite this and give it a face lift. I will pay you double, triple, whatever, I don't care, my wallet is yours. I want to support Tappei Nagatsuki. I want to support the translators. I cannot support this, however. I urge the company to fix this mistake, as there will almost certainly be someone who picks up the books first and is turned off by everything I have described in this review.
What else can be said
This is a masterpiece in suffering. One would assume the story gets repetitive but one would be wrong. I enjoy almost everything about this series.

This was my first light novel purchase, and I'm quite happy with this read. I purchased the first 3 volumes cause... why not. I wanted to read what this, as source material, offered. (Yes yes I know it's been translated from Japanese, so it's not "original".) Anyway, I was amazed with the large amount of inner-monologue and narration (1st&3rd), which gave so much detail about the scenes, which the anime cut, but displayed though facial expressions, etc. Although it was done pretty well. The anime left me wanting to know more about the storyline and plot. This definitely sated some of my glutinous cravings. Hahaha, 'punny'. So, if you want a novel that's mind-f*&%ing, has a MC with a crippling mental state (that we can relate to), and don't forget the misleading cover art. Then this is 100% for you, nasty f*&%.
Groundhog day, the Isekai
I watched the anime before reading this book, and they line up really closely at this stage. This is a good initial introduction to the PoV character in his starting state and how Return by Death works. The biggest advantage the novel has over the anime is the more organic insight into Subaru's inner mental state. While at this initial stage that makes him slightly less sympathetic, I'm very curious about how that insight will change what we know about him in later volumes, since that character development is one of the key appeals of this series.
Great light novel
Got on time and with no damage to the book
Great adaptation to a great series.
As a fan of the anime series I really can't wait to see what happens after the first season so I thought I'd start reading the light novels and hopefully at some point they'll pass the series and I can see what happens next. Either that or we'll get a season 2 so either way I'm happy. Re:Zero vol. 1 is the second light novel I've ever read and I had a few misgivings. I've read that the translations can be a bit rough at times and there is quite a few "not exactly complaints" per se but I've seen quite a few reviews state how it's a bit annoying that characters aren't always giving queue's so that it's hard to tell who's speaking at times and while they are right it wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. I only had two spots where it got a bit confusing but after a quick reread it was apparent who was speaking. I was also worried that this would be a "exact or literal" translation with no thought given to narrative flow. Long story short I worried about nothing. The novel had a nice flow to it and read like any other good story. Not only that but it clarified a few things that the anime didn't really touch on. Basically it's just more of what you already love. The characters are great, the story is great and the telling was more than adequate. Could it have been better? Possibly but as is it was more than adequate. I had a great time reading this book and have already bought the second volume. With Kadokawa's recent purchase of Yen Press I'm hoping we'll get even more anime's translated into light novels, more manga and that the already good quality will improve even more. It's a win/win for anime fans. Rest assured. This is the Re:Zero that you all love, just with a bit more of it. If you're hesitant to buy this light novel, don't be. The story kept me at the edge of my seat and the illustrations while sparse were all excellent and the illustrator should really be commended. All in all it was a well put together book and I'm staying for the ride. I love Re:Zero and as far as I'm concerned one can never get enough of Emilia, Subaru and especially Rem/Ram. I can't wait to finally meet Rem and Ram again in the next book. :D

One of the best novels out there. The animation is also very good. The animation conveys all contents to the tiniest details so i didn’t find much point continue reading the series. What’s a shame.

Excellent experience, I watched the anime too, with that said it gives you a feeling of complete.
Source material for Re:Zero and a quick, fun & easy read
The first book in a long line of Re:Zero novels. It’s a quick, easy and fun read. Lots of details that were left out of the anime are present in this light novel, and it does a great job at keeping everything interesting even if you’ve already watched the show. Just to give you an idea of how much was cut out, the first season roughly adapts the first 9 volumes. There are a few sections in volume one with errors as far as the wording and some of the translations. It seems to get more consistent the further into the series you read, so if the grammar mistakes bother you in volume one just know it only gets better. I’d recommend this series to anyone who loves the anime or manga, or anyone who is interested in light novels. This is the source material for the Re:Zero anime and manga, and it’s better than both of those. I enjoyed both but the light novel is the best. For those who haven’t read any light novels, they move more quickly and tend to be less wordy than an average novel; for those reasons I can usually read one of these light novels in roughly 5 hours or less depending on the page count. Enjoy it only gets better as it goes
Nice novel, messy begging direct to become a masterpiece
We can’t deny that the novel feels weighty, Nagatsuki Tapei got better next volume, like he said In a interview, volume 1 it’s the prologue of a videogame

Re:Zero is a refreshing visit to staple fantasy cliches
Re:Zero is a series that revisits several fantasy cliches with a unique and refreshing approach. The story focuses on it's protagonist Subaru as he's suddenly thrust from modern day Japan into an unfamiliar world (called "Isekai" in Japan, meaning "Another World), equipped only with the items he had on him in his original world and food he had just purchased from a local convenience store. Unlike your typical fantasy or isekai novel, Subaru finds that he has no particular skills or abilities giving him some advantage in this new world; in fact, the only item he has of any value is his tracksuit and his nearly dead cell-phone. The only thing resembling "fantasy" that he has going for him is a mysterious power to "Return by Death", in which whenever he dies he returns to a previous checkpoint, not determined by him, bringing the pain and mental trauma of that death back with him. Re:Zero is well written, full of excellent use of spoken and internal dialogue, and displays impressive prose throughout the descriptions of the world Subaru finds himself in and the people who inhabit it. The story in ripe with mystery and the unveiling of the plots and lore behind these mysteries is wonderfully done. While the series includes many isekai and fantasy tropes and cliches, it almost always approaches them in a novel or unfamiliar way, it contains violence, but also colorful images and text; it manages to progress the story in a way that includes comedy, horror, tragedy, romance, and character development with only occasional dragging, but manages to not feel like the story is being rushed to get to the next action scene like so many of in it's genre do. This first volume covers the first arc or 4 episodes of the anime adaptation. The translation is very well done, especially with the internal dialogue, but the wording and pacing can become dry at times because of the lack of linguistic localization; it's a very honest translation, but may seem dull to some. As a whole I would highly recommend the series (and the anime) if you have an interest in lore heavy fantasy, isekai novels, or simply enjoy new takes at old tropes.
Great story!
Not gonna go too deep into detail. Big fan of the story & the characters though, I highly recommend.
Wonderful story. Mediocre adaptation.
I'm both a huge fan of this series and a lifelong reader. I was excited for this novel, which promised another opportunity to enter the world of Re:Zero and experience a different, more detailed angle. Re:Zero is definitely one of the more worthwhile stories to come out in recent years. It's dark and complex (though you only get relatively small taste of those elements in this volume) and extremely well-paced. It receives full marks for the beauty and intensity of its characters and plot. It's a five-star story. However, I would give Yen Press's adaptation in particular two and a half stars, if I could. It's just serviceable, and sometimes not even that. I also read the Spice and Wolf light novels years ago, and I was hoping that Yen's ability to adapt and translate would have improved since then. Unfortunately, this seems not to be the case. The adaptation of Spice and Wolf was stilted and uninspired. The translation was adequate but dull; it felt like a very literal transliteration of the Japanese text as opposed to an adaptation for the ease and enjoyment of reading for native English speakers. Probably the best example of this is in the dialogue, for it is at times difficult to tell which character is speaking in a conversation due to a lack of cues. I imagine this isn't a problem in the original Japanese because of nuances in diction and dialect that can't be retained in translation. Unfortunately, this volume of Re:Zero has all of these problems, except even worse, and more. The translation feels even more literal and awkward, I'm definitely confused more often about who is speaking in dialogue, and now, to compound the issue, there are plenty of grammatical, usage, and syntax errors. It feels very much like what I might expect from a relatively decent fan translation, but not something I would expect to pay for. I'm happy to have supported the franchise, and enjoyed the book for the second look I got at the story. I might even buy the second light novel once it comes out, but now that I've seen the quality of Yen Press's translation, that has gone from a resounding certainty to a troubled maybe.
A revolutionary, humorous, loving, heartbreaking tragedy filled fantasy novel that everyone should give a chance.
Re:ZERO is a Fantasy/Mystery novel, with light-heartened humor and love separated by violence and tragedy. It is one of the best and most original stories I've ever read. Far too often I feel stories are adhering to predictable stories and characters, almost as if they are written to be shallow and easy to digest at the cost of anything truly memorable. Re:ZERO is a brilliantly unpredictable. Each character is memorable and unique. The depth of their personalities, emotions, how they think, who they are, and their own histories are so meticulously crafted that even minor characters become unforgettable. The complexity of the characters is matched by the plot itself, leading the reader into a false sense of security, or tricking them into believing they can predict outcomes of encounters. For each mystery solved in Re:ZERO, two more often take its place. This builds suspense that engrosses and carries the reader forward from each chapter to the next. Don't let the art fool you. This is a complicated, violent, mystery fantasy novel. Yes, it was written in Japan, and yes the cover art is unlike most novels sold in in English speaking countries, but don't let what's unfamiliar to you stop you from giving this novel a chance. Treat this book as you would any famous American made series. Don't judge the outside of this book or its origins until you've given it a chance. You won't regret it. One last thing. As I said above, this novel is humorous, loving, and funny, but it is also very violent, and as the summary says, 'How do you repay someone who saves your life if all you can do is die,' be prepared for many cruel, heartbreaking moments in this story. The depth of characters makes the tragedies that much more meaningful, but you'll be happy you got to know them, even though they're only words in a book.
Great Light Novel
Re:Zero was the first anime i ever watched and its been my favourite since and i just had to read the source material for some more content, its really one of the best stories ive read other than Berserk and A Song of Ice and Fire (both of which i highly recommend)
Fantastic
Its taking me an annoyingly long time to finish Vol 1 of the light novel, mainly because I almost dont want to finish and go on to Vol 2 to then be stuck up a creek without a paddle due to the long time in between releases. I've seen the anime, which is by far at the top of my personal list as well as 2016's anime. I wanted to check out the light novel (and the manga, which I also bought) to see how well things were adapted as well as simply to own my first light novel. So far, mostly everything has been verbatim. Im positive there are rather drastic changes further on since I am reading the web novel translation and there are a large number of things not mentioned in the anime, but overall I dont see the anime doing the source material an injustice at all. If you enjoyed the anime in the slightest, buy all the light novels and the mangas as they release. I imagine the number of sales and overall popularity is what determines whether or not we get a second season. Buy the visual novel to, though it wont have a whole lot to do with the main story as we know it from what I understand.
Peak Fiction
Such an amazing series but the translation needs to be faster! Read the web novels!
Interesting concept let down by the writing style and translation
Unmotivated nobody Subaru Natsuki has somehow stumbled into another world. “Prepared” in a sense for this unexpected occurrence by a lifetime of anime, he prepares to explore the fantasy world he’s entered and any dangers it holds while wondering if he’s gained any special powers. If he has, it may not be as useful as he hopes. I’ve hardly been so simultaneously interested and annoyed as when reading this light novel. The concept is decent, there are good action moments, and SOME of the humor works… ..but a lot of the humor is overdone and/or unfunny, the main character is generally unlikable, and the writing style is atrocious. The attempts at self depreciation, such as Subaru repeatedly commenting how he’s a disaffected youth “poisoned by anime,” is more odd and off putting than amusing. He’s also pretty dense and it all combines to make him someone to be tolerated rather than interested in. In the writing there’s constant redundancy of describing everything from Subaru’s point of view then summarizing the same thing again in dialog or his thoughts that’s clunky and unneeded. On top of that issue is extremely awkward phrasing that made the book a chore to get through. Whether the primary cause overall was the original text or the translation is unclear (and it’s likely to be a bit of both). But there are obvious instances of poor translation. For example, there is an exchange joking about two characters’ ages prompted by the line “Well, it’s been a long time since anyone’s called me a girl.” Except no one did. The proceeding line is “She looks really used to fighting, despite her being a woman.” While I was able to follow the idea regardless and it may seem like a small error, using “woman” instead of “girl” there is clearly an inconsistency and there are similar things throughout the book. Writing that repeatedly draws attention to itself in such a way significantly hampers immersion. Capping it all off is an approach that’s the epitome of telling instead of showing (this of course likely stems from the source text). Expectation versus reality is conveyed by endless exposition, with characters’ feelings being stated and described instead of felt. Not only does this tend to flatten the emotional impact of the story, over describing insignificant things takes away from the key moments when the extensive detail is appropriate (and as I mentioned earlier there are a few such moments that are very well done). The pacing of the book is also hampered a bit by the production. If you somehow manage to avoid the spoiler on the back cover (which I had) about something that’s not really explained until a third to halfway through the book, it’s spoiled anyway in the color pages under the character descriptions. Since those descriptions came from the original publication perhaps it was never meant to be much of a secret, but knowing more than is explicitly revealed in the book itself for so long was another aspect contributing to make reading long sections specifically building up to that realization boring. It’s a shame really, as again the core premise is intriguing. The way the author acknowledges and plays with genre conventions has great potential if refined/reigned in a bit, and the cast is a reasonably interesting collection of mysterious misfits. There are some plot issues that really should have been addressed in this book, but signs do point towards them coming up in the future. The epilogue reveals more about the story than the entire proceeding book, which is another pacing problem but admittedly provides a strong hook for the next one. Overall I wanted to like this a lot more than I actually did. I’m curious about what happens to Subaru and company going forward but can’t see forcing myself to read more. I might try to switch to the anime at some point and see if the storytelling and style feel more natural in that.
Great Story, Lousy translation
As another person said in their review, the story was great, the translation was however, not. I'm not going to go into the story, there are plenty of other reviews here that do, I would definitely suggest to pick it up. However with the translation, there are some points where sentences are formed correctly and you have to figure out what's going on by paying attention to see what was actually meant. There was a point or two where the wrong pronoun was used, it was also difficult to tell who was speaking and I would find myself rereading the page to determine who it would sound most like in context. Another point in the story, they even placed the wrong chapter name(this happens closer to the end when Subaru passes by Elsa, and a page later it said after he passed satella). I couldn't help but laugh and shake my head at the mistake. So make sure you pay attention and don't get too confused. The story is to die for, but the adaptation is terrible, hopefully we will get a better one with the second Ln, or maybe there is a good translation of the wn out there.
Son liked it
It wasn’t for me but little man loved it and thanked me saying it was the best!!!!!
Charismatic Cast and a Creative Plot
The realistic but funny main character really sets this apart from other series where the main character travels to a fantasy world. Although it first appears to be a cute adventure story, it is actually has strong elements of horror and mystery that will keep you thinking until the end. The main character is not some over-powered Mary Sue, which keeps the plot very interesting and makes it easy to get into. I look forward to all of the character development that awaits. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the theme where a character goes to another world, horror or mystery, fantasy action, or time loops. Although I do not usually enjoy time loop stories, Subaru is funny enough to keep it as funny as can be. The anime is also fantastic, but it had to cut out a few scenes to make the show fit together smoothly. The book appears to contain more critical hints to solving what may really be going on. Both are worth investing yourself in.
Peak fiction!
It’s really a good book and I would recommend it to anyone looking to get into light novels.
Offers Potential For a Deeper Story
Re:Zero offers yet another take on the transported to a [fantasy] video game world type of story. Though here we dont know if it is a video game or not but the authors afterword clearly implied that he was inspired by rpg video games anyway, so it might as well be thrust in there. Further the character, lead character, likes to talk of things in such a way that you might as well think there are "events" taking place in which "relationship points" are being earned in order to access different options for advancing the story. The story itself is fairly unique in that we have a non prodigy type of lead character trying to take on saving the first girl he meets in this world. Though he is weak the others around him seem fairly strong such as Satella (first girl), Felt, another girl, an old man, and even the antagonist and a knight. I found this to perhaps make it somewhat easier to read though without having a prodigy lead, anytime Subaru (lead) fails I kind of cringe because it feels so awkward and actually awful. Then the gimmick of the story gets in and we have to relive some of these failures many times. The gimmick of the story is its greatest weakness, as we relive through many scenes and sadly it means pacing is sacrificed in order to retread. I found myself skipping some of the retreat moments because they either offered nothing new or told us stuff we could have already gleamed from the events. I will say the final 30 or so pages was compelling and hyped me up for the rest of the series. Will stick with it.
Not Bad
Re: Zero is a fun story. It manages to embrace the anime fantasy genre while remaining very self-aware and even a little spoofy. It makes no attempt to hide the inspiration it received from anime such as Magic Knight Rayearth, Escaflowne, and Now and Then, Here and There. If you're looking for a fantasy story that pokes fun at its forebearers while still remaining serious, Re: Zero is for you. It was even popular enough to receive anime and manga adaptations. However, it does have an annoying flaw with its dialogue. It often doesn't tell you who's speaking, leaving you to figure it out for yourself. There were numerous times I found myself saying, "Wait, who said that? Was it Subaru? Oh, no, it was Satella." But aside from that, I have no trouble recommending Re: Zero.
I’d highly recommend this series.
Words can not describe my enjoyment of this series as a whole. But words can describe this first novel a sudden shift in environment in the very first chapter is expected but how suddenly it occurs is fantastical and strange.
Great Story and Characters, Translation Could Be Better, Especially with Dialogue Tags
This would be a 5-star review if I was just basing this review on the plot, characters, and setting, but the translation of this particular volume is a bit rough around the edges and needed a bit more editing. The main thing is that the dialogue can be hard to follow do to the lack of dialogue tags. For a story heavy on the (very awesome!) banter that can lead to a bit confusing. One the bight side, I've read the other books in the series and the translation is getting better with each volume. I definitely recommend this book to everyone, especially if you've seen the anime and want a better understanding of the internal life of the MC.
Good start for a light novel.
It starts off light-hearted with the MC wanting to help a pretty girl, but this simple act of kindness leads him to his death and the reveal of his power of "loading" a "save point" and trying again. It then turns dark as he dies repeatedly trying to do the right thing and save the people he cares about even if they themselves don't even remember him. Despite that, he keeps moving forward. Can't save much about the characters as one volume cannot delve deep enough to fully explore the characters. There is much hinting of more deeper, hidden sides to the characters in this light novel. They aren't flat for sure, and im not talking about felt's chest
Its friggin sick
I absolutely love these books and for them to come in great condition ready to read is nothing short of fantastic!
The Light Novel Resembles The Story Plot In The Manga
I liked the stylish cover art on the front cover on the light novel. Because, it reminds me of being in day dreaming mode. I don't have much to dislike about this light novel so I will omit that comment. I read this light novel because I wanted to find out what the difference in the "Re:Zero" storyline was between the Manga, Light Novel, and Anime adaptions.
Re: Zero Light Novel‼️
Thought I ordered the manga 😔 but I will read this eventually. Very nice photos especially of my homeboy Puck.
Great novel
I didn’t realize there was a manga edition too, but still very satisfied with the translation quality, and the book as a whole!
I Am Not the Only One Who Loves This.
I love Re:Zero so much. I could write an awful lot about why and how I love it so much, but there will be plenty of other that will make the same comments as I could have. I think of this as a love at first sight romantic comedy, set in a fantasy world. The more the MC gets to know his love interest, the more he, and we the readers want to do more for that love. Fairly shoujou, but with lots of action that only the dullest shounen will not enjoy it as much.

A Good Start to a Great Series
Having watched the anime and read the manga, I was excited to finally read the source material first hand. I think the translation did a pretty good job of conveying the original intent of the author. I did notice a couple minor errors such as a missing word and one sentence that could have been written better, but all in all I think the translation was a quality one. The story itself I found engrossing and entertaining. I am definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series as soon as it comes out.
Lost in translation
First off, for anyone unfamiliar with the "light novel" format that thinks they're buying a manga: this is a novella. Other than a few illustrations of the characters, it's all text. If you're not a fan of the anime, I can't really recommend reading this; while definitely the result of translation issues more than anything else, the writing and dialogue both come across as stilted and amateur, and it makes for an awkward read. While there's a neat world and story buried here, you'll be hard-pressed to find them if you're not already familiar with the anime, and like the show itself, it takes a bit to hit its stride. If you are a fan of the anime, however, it might be worth buying for the additional "scenes" and dialogue that aren't included in the show.
Great condition
The quality of the book is in amazing quality as well as that I now have the cut content to one of my favorite Isekai series.
Increíble, aún mejor que el anime
I really enjoy the history. It doesn't matter how many times I have read it; it is a really good history
subaru dies
get spoiled 10/10 would read again
Great story that’ll have you burning through pages
Love it, this LN and anime are fantastic!
Perfect!
Exactly what I ordered and came fast!
For kids
It was great
A must for Re:Zero
Easy Read
Very Strong First Impression: Waiting for Book 2 ;)
Now, this is a review coming from someone who is 19 episodes into the anime (currently caught up and watching weekly) and I think the light novel is a better way to experience the first 4 episodes which is what this book has covered. I think the anime is one of the best I've seen in awhile and the first light novel is a good way to start.
Still a good read, even after watching the anime
I was initially skeptical, having already watched the anime, whether or not I’d find this book interesting. That doubt was unneeded it seems. Or, it just might be that I’m a sucker for this kinda genre. Not you usual, isekai novel, that’s for sure.
Excellent!
The product took a few days to ship, but the exact day it was on my why, The package was at my door the very next morning. Perfect condition, the volumes are BEAUTIFUL! No damage what so ever to the package or the actually material inside. Will totally be buying more volumes! Thank so much.
If you watched the anime, try the book.
If you're a fan of the anime series, this book is for you. I do not read books. But rezero was such a great series for me, i had to give this book a try, and it was great. The book includes a bit more detail from the anime, but thise book was pretty much anime in word form. still great read.
No wonder it is the 3rd best selling Light novel in Japan
When I started watching the anime, I never thought anything would top it for me. it was the best plot and characters I had ever seen in an anime since full Metal Alchemist. So I wanted more and this book delivers excellent detail on Subaru's adventure.
slow
This books main characters super power is annoying he dies goes back in time to be a giant failure over, and over again till finally SPOILER ALERT tripping into success not thru his actions but by luck or fate bringing all the right people together to solve his problem. Honestly not the worst book I've read but I kinda don't like wimpy ,kinda slow, main characters who need others to solve their problems.
GREAT beggining!
Well, I've become a fan through the anime, but now I'll buy the novels whenever they become available. Tapei's prose is light and unencumbered and flows very easily and fast. If you enjoy "other world" novels and are interested in a sort of "deconstruction" of it - if obviously tongue-in-cheek - this is your JAM!
... random person on the internet hehe it gets much better. Also if you're an anime fan like me ...
Some people might find the story a little slow in this volume but trust me a random person on the internet hehe it gets much better. Also if you're an anime fan like me you might learn some things that were cut from it. 10/10 buy.

Im loving the anime, so I decided to give this a chance! This is the first LN I've ever bought (or any reading material at all tbh) and I wasnt disappointed. It didnt come in perfect condition though, but it's not a big deal to me. Added a photo of it.
Without any complainings
Good translations. I've never read original one but it's a kinda book as if they speak Japanase. I mean I felt their conversation is truly natural, it sounds natural. Even this book is written by English I felt the smell of Japanese LNs.
Thank you for translating this series!
The light novel that gave us the currently airing anime Re:Zero, is finally in the West. Great work by yenpress on the translation. The quality of the book is pretty standard, but everything is printed well. The art is great! Perfect for a fan of the series.
... sit here and tell you why this story is great.. it just is
I don't need to sit here and tell you why this story is great.. it just is. I cried 347 times watching the anime and if / when I get to reading this you can bet I'll be crying 347 times again.
8 out 9 more volumes remaining to read.
I finally got the Gospe. That's good enough reason to leave my 5 stars. Note: the seller I bought it from took 2 weeks for it to arrive. All in all you get to more interaction in general from the story.
Katlyn
The book is amazing and really good
Pretty good NEET recovery story
The author does a good job conveying how surreal the scenario is, and assembled a good cast for it.
I love it!
Really good, I watched the anime and I ended buying all of the English novels. Please support official realases; I don't want this series to end before it's finished.
Gift
It was a Christmas present. The recipient loved it.
Support the show and get this!
Absolutely great translation. First time buying a light novel and I don't regret it at all! If you love the show and want to support the show even more I'd HIGHLY recommend you buy this.
My boyfriend loved the anime but isn't big on manga
My boyfriend loved the anime but isn't big on manga. This was a perfect gift to add to his light novel collection!
PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILL RIDE WITH A MAIN CHARACTER WITH A HORRIBLY GOOD ABILITY
Great psychological thrill ride where the main character, Natsuki Subaru, has the ability to repeat certain events and create a better outcome for himself and for the sake of those that he cherishes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Great
Loved the book just as much as the anime! Book covers ARC 1 This is a novel, not a manga.. Cant decide if you want to read this series? Watch this: [...]
great
daughter loved it
Subaru-tan for EMT (EMP)!
I love the harsh, crisp nature of this novel. It sets up all your expectations to just crush them later. It's exactly what I've been looking for. Watch the anime, it's also very good.
it is quite awesome to experience this ride again
Hands down, was anime of 2016 for me. To have it in my hands, in novel format, it is quite awesome to experience this ride again. Love this series!
One thing is watching it in the Anime another thing is reading it and imagining how'd it look like. One word
The descriptions of the gore leaves you unsettled. One thing is watching it in the Anime another thing is reading it and imagining how'd it look like. One word : brutal. Love it.
Great
Provides the much desired perspectives and thought processes of the side characters in such away that the show cannot convey. Would highly recommend to anyone who likes the show.
Amazing
Read this series it’s really good
Briliant...
, yet it is but a prologue at this point. Things gets MUCH better onwards. Just let it captivate you from this excellent first volume, lad.
Fantastic!
As an English only speaking fan of the anime and can't get enough of Re:Zero this LN does not disappoint! Looking forward to the English release of the next volume!

Love the anime and wanted to read the books along with it cause I cant wait for the next season to come out!
Love It!
Sure one could just watch the anime but reading it is also just as fun!!
Starting from Zero
I watched the anime, so I wanted to read the light novel so bad. Love the extra detail it gives.
Boring Adaptation
I enjoyed Re:Zero when it was airing and decided to pick up the light novel to see if it was any good. Needless to say, it was not. This has to be one of the most boring novels I have ever read. The text is so uninspired and dull it was hard to make it through the book without frequent stops along the way. I really wanted to enjoy this since I liked the anime, but this adaptation lacks any flair and is just boring words on a page.
Great book

Nice
Bought it as a birthday present for my friend. He likes it because it's more detailed than the anime.
It wasn't for me.
I'm not sure how many times I'll try to get through this book. I've made 4 attempts and the writing has turned me off each time. I can't get through the beginning to see if there is enough plot to entertain me. That's about all I can say. I don't like the main character, I can't get into the tale. It just wasn't a book I can recommend.
Excellent gift!
I bought this for a female-close-family-member, and it is an excellent gift. The physical book itself is high-quality and in great new condition. All went great with this gift purchase, from beginning to end. 5 outta’ 5 stars all-around.
While I was slightly disappointed with certain aspects of the light novel
I just finished reading volume 1 of the Re Zero – Starting Life in Another World light novel series, and I can I just say holy s***? While I was slightly disappointed with certain aspects of the light novel, it was overall one of the more satisfying reads. For those of you who've watched the anime, you'll know the basics. Natsuki Subaru is a NEET, which stands for Not in Education, Employment or Training. One day while he's coming home from the grocery store, he gets sent to another world, one that looks like it came straight from the Dungeon Master's Guide. What I really love about the light novel is how, in the prologue of the series, we don't start off with highly detailed world building. Instead, we're introduced to our main character just as he dies. Yes, dies. He dies in the freaking prologue. How intense is that? I'm not one for violence, but the sheer audacity of having the main character die within the prologue is just awesome. My hats off to the author—at least it would be if I had a hat. After the prologue, we follow our main protagonist as he struggles to deal with being sent to a fantasy world. Subaru is a pretty self-aware and genre-savvy character. He immediately figures out what's going on, that he's been transported to another world, and that he has some kickass super power that will come out at the appropriate time... (insert laughter here) Yeah, no. Subaru has no power, which I actually found kind of refreshing. It's clear from the onset that despite knowing he was sent to another world, Subaru is in way over his head. He's basically a regular teenager with no special traits and few good qualities. That said, despite how slow he can sometimes be, I was rather impressed with how developed he was as a character. His personality is very clear; he's somewhat abrasive and kind of rude, but he's genuinely a decent person who, upon being thrust into an unfamiliar world, is forced to face several hard truths. I think he did a pretty decent job, all things considered. Going back to the concept of super powers, Subaru actually does have one power, but it only activates when he dies. Called Return by Death by Subaru, it basically acts as a form of reset. Whenever he dies, Subaru is sent back to a specific point in time. Now, I've heard so many theories about this: Subaru's stuck in a time loop, Subaru's not going back in time but creating a completely new dimension, blah, blah, blah. I've got some theories of my own, but until I have some solid evidence that one of them are correct, I'm not going into them. I don't want to embarrass myself. One of the other characters who we're introduced to is a half elf who calls herself Satella. Satella is a gorgeous girl who looks to be around Subaru's age with silver hair and purple eyes. Looking at the front cover and illustrations of her, I can agree with Subaru's assessment. Men would probably die for her smile. I really have to give props on her design. While she does look like a classical example of a heroine, she's probably one the prettiest heroines I've seen by now. What I like the most about Satella has nothing to do with her beauty, however, but with her kindness. We learn from the onset that Satella is a very kind person; she helps people even when it means getting further away from her goal, she allows Subaru to help her despite the fact that he's actually dragging her down, and she has an earnest disposition that suits someone with the heroine status. Sort of like how Subaru fell in love with her at first sight, I found her character to be very endearing right from the beginning. We're also introduced to Puck, a spirit who's been contracted to Satella. Puck's personality is playful and open, but also somewhat mysterious. I don't know much about Puck other than that. I guess it was done on purpose. The author doesn't want us knowing too much yet. There are four other characters of interest that will become more important later in the story: Felt, who is a little blond girl that steals Satella's insignia, Old Man Rom, who owns the loot house, and Reinhard, a master swordsman who comes from a powerful master swordsman lineage. He's like the ultimate badass, and he's usually the kind of hero that stories are often told about. The last character of interest is Elsa, who goes by the name Bowel Hunter because, well, I guess she likes to open up people's stomachs and spill their insides all over the floor. She's kinda creepy, but I think that's what makes her such an interesting villain. While reading this volume was a delight, the one thing I have an issue with is the English. Now, I know this was translated from Japanese, but with all the hype surrounding this series, one would think that Yen Press would do the best job they can to ensure that they have as few mistakes as possible. However, when reading this volume, I found several of mistakes. Grammar mistakes, syntax errors. The biggest issue was definitely the syntax. There were a number of times where I'd have to reread a sentence because it didn't sound right, and then I'd realize it was because a word got mixed up or the sentence didn't make sense due to how it was written. These parts would tear me right out of the story. "As a popular male, it really is tough on me. I can never put the girls to sleep." ~ Puck, a mischievous cat spirit. That said, I still had a lot of fun reading this light novel, which is why I'm giving it 4-stars. If the grammar had been a bit better, I would've given it a five, and even with the few mistakes, I'm still going to recommend this light novel to anyone who's looking for a story with an interesting plot twists that's been placed in a story that has a somewhat overused concept.
Good story but very dull and boring writing
I decided to get this book because i liked the anime but when i started reading it the writing felt dull and boring. its hard to read it with out stop soon after. it feels like i am reading a book you got assigned in school and you do not want to read it. it sucks because i like the story but the writing is very boring.
Excellent LN
Although it had a few grammar errors, I really enjoyed reading this book! Can't wait to read volume 2 to see how the story proceeds. If you've watched the anime, give it a try.

Great novel and great writing
Great novel! After watching the anime and reading the novel, I so much recommend it! Such details and such a story, it makes you want to know more and more about it.. Tappei (the author) really worked so hard on this one, the characters, the events, and the mystery are all bery good.
This is such a great series, I watched the anime
This is such a great series, I watched the anime, and read the manga, i'm all to excited to read the light novel.
Amazing!
I wasn't too sure about buying this but I'm SO glad I did. I instantly fell in love with the main character Subaru. His personality is hilarious and I found myself laughing throughout the book. O can't wait to get the next one! I highly recommend!

Came in pretty bent but luckly no creases, nothing like stacking other volumes, books on top or each side to straighten it out lmao
Great buy either way. Do your homework before purchase
Don't expect to get the manga version of this. You'll end up getting a regular chapter book. Not a big deal as I'm a fan of the series either way. If you want the manga version of this look for different cover art as this and the manga book version both share the same reviews but different listings if that makes any sense. Will update with pictures of both once I recieve the manga.
Just watch the anime
This is a really good story, but the translation is full of typos and errors.

As someone that enjoyed the anime to a certain extent while it was airing, I have to say that I wasn't particularly impressed by the book. While the writing in the anime is shoddy at times, the thing with this novel is that the author simply seemed not to have anyone proofreading him. I don't know whether this is just a translation issue, or whether Nagatsuki's writing wasn't that good in Japanese either, but it feels like he constantly repeats himself. Sentences don't flow very well, and it ultimately takes way too long to get anywhere. Not bad, but I wouldn't really say it's good either.
Excelente servicio y excelenete producto
Good read
Overall, this followed the anime fairly closely. It’s nice to finally get some insights into the characters’ thinking process. My only complaint is the lack of colourful expressions in the writing.
Wonderful story
Just wonderful. Reading it you cam feel The emotions of the character. Despair, sorrow, Angers. Obs: I am useless about english, my main language is portuguese. Bit I am Trying.
Vale super a pena!
Another isekai...possible future harem
Oh look at that another isekai, and let's see what mysterious power the main protagonist has...apparently he dies...a lot. Okay now I'm interested.
Excelente Servicio y Compra
Ligthnovel>Anime
The Lightnovel does a better job of moving the plot forward and foreshadowing events or hints that felt just like convenient plot devices on the anime. It also does a better job of characterizing both people and places.
Me gusta
Good novel
I just love this story, is so good and the anime as well, so I completely recomend to read this!
excelente!!

RE ZERO 1
I love Emilia
Good even after I saw the anime
Even if you saw the anime, this is still a good read! There is more stuff and thoughts about what is happening too!
Five Stars
Great light novel from one of the best anime of the year 2016
Re: zero

Perrfect
Is exactly what I wanted it to be. I had no issues with the packaging and the product itself was in excellent shape! Good job.
Five Stars
The book arrived quickly and was to be as expected. 5/5 I have no negativities to imply.
