Relentless: A Memoir

This is an excellent memoir by Super Bowl LIII MVP Julian Edelman. The memoir is aptly named as well: relentless. This is the saga of an undersized but determined athlete who persevered through high school, college, and the NFL to overcome his lack of size with relentless determination to succeed. Julian walks us through his entire athletic career overcoming all the doubters and shaping himself into a successful athlete at all levels of football. What is truly amazing is his ability to go from a small college quarterback at Kent State and learn a whole new craft of being a successful wide receiver in the NFL. That is not an easy transition even for the most gifted of athletes but Edelman not only has done it but now has one of the iconic catches in Super Bowl history and now a Super Bowl MVP that will etch his name in football history in perpetuity. I also liked how the book is interspersed with thoughts from coaches and teammates throughout his athletic journey. This is a great book that shows that relentless determination can allow anyone to live their dreams.

Im not a huge reader but I thought I would give this book a look. It was a decent book and you do get a look into his personal views and what it takes for some people to get into and stay in the NFL especially as an underdog. I can warn you there is LOTS of game recap. LOTS of game recap, with plenty of details (that got a bit boring to me) but that's just my opinion. I don't professionally review literature so I am going to give it 4 stars because I did enjoy the book, but sometimes I got tired of literally reading a play by play game. I was more into the background story and personal information.

I loved this book. It was very intense, filled with ups and downs, and many other things. I lerned that if you want something, you have to earn it. Nobody became a star in anything without trying. Julian worked harder than anyone else, he put all of his time and effort into what he loved and belived in, and he came out on top. He got this far on his determination and long to play in the NFL, and look at where that landed him. This is easily the best book I ever read in 2017 and 2016. Just an amazing book, and remember, NO SNIVELING!!!!!!!!!! EVER!!!!

This book is a wonderful and easy read! Any lover of football would enjoy reading his story of growing up and playing in the NFL, even if they are not a Patriots fan. Edelman has a great story of never giving up and continuing to better himself in order to keep playing in the NFL. Relentless takes an in depth look into his childhood, college, and NFL career as well as giving short bits from family/friends and coaches. I truly enjoyed reading this book and found myself smiling with most of the stories he tells. There is also a lot of flashbacks to previous games that it always interesting and you can find his opinion on some of the things that have happened within the NFL.

If you are sorrounded by doubters, or haters, this book is for you. It doesnt matter if you love or hate the Patriots. Julian story is about an insane dedication, insane work ethic to defy the odds and achieve what most people would consider impossible or at least unprobable. I’ve always admired people who work for everything they have and Julian Edelman has worked so hard his entire life. In the cut throat business of professional sports, he kept striving to improve himself. This is a great book for anyone who needs to be reminded what hard work and grit can accomplish. I really enjoyed the parts from other people’s perspective. It made the book more well rounded and was interesting to read how they remembered an event.

I have used several anecdotes from this book as lessons for my school aged children and as a reminder to myself that all things are possible when thoughts are put into actions leading to manifestation.

The guy can write as well as he can play football. So who does his daughter live with? Does he have a relationship with her mother? I got more questions.

This book is amazing. I got it for my daughter and she loved it. She said it taught her so much about life and how to have faith in yourself. She’s a big patriots fan herself and loved it. She loves Jules and learning about how such a daredevil he was as a kid made her think about how she could too. By far a five star book.

I love this guy. A self made (along with his dads kicks in the rear) man and superior nfl wide receiver. He is like a wide up toy but he never stops.

Great inside look at tunEFUl and what a sacrifice it requires. Read starts a little slow going through childhood years. It really picks up from there. Inspirational and motivational plus a great pro football book.

Finished this book roughly 2 weeks after Jules retired (April 2021). Amazing read and truly inspirational. One of the best under-dog stories I’ve ever read. Recommend to anyone with big dreams and a ton of obstacles in front of them. Never give up on your dreams. Not until the wheels fall off. Thanks for the memories!

Julian shows us throughout the book that hard work and consistency are two huge factors for success. This is a great read for any football fan or anyone who needs some motivation to go out and crush their goals on or off the field. The signature is legitimate too don’t worry.

Great insight to a very talented player. As a New Yorker, I'm a Pats and a JE11 fan, so I really enjoyed getting the inside scoop on what makes JE11 so determined, so good and so RELENTLESS! His struggle with his height being a major factor in achieving what he wanted early on as a child growing up is the foundation of proving people wrong, working harder than most, being unstoppable and being RELENTLESS is an inspiring, motivating and even humorous read at times. If you've ever struggled with obstacles, JE11 will inspire you to push past the noise, overlook the doubters and haters, align your own goals with focus and vision and become RELENTLESS in achieving what you want in life! Thanks for a great read Julian.

Just finished reading Relentless and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Believe in yourself and follow your heart are great gifts that Julian recognized at an early age. His appreciation for all those that support him and especially for those who challenged him reflects well his understanding of how he got there. The great American dream is alive and well if your passion is matched by your courage to he the best you can be. There is great takeaway for the athlete and non athlete alike. Congrats on a great story and a inspiring read.

This book is poorly written and VERY overpriced.

I love Julian Edelman and his inspiring story. His personal photos in the book are quite nice as well, what a handsome fellow!

I’m not a Pats fan, but this is a great book anyways. Edelman has a bit of a badass reputation for being an jerk, but you really got to see inside him and understand him in the book.

I read 25 books per year and this is my favorite of 2017. Edelman shares his upbringing, his fears, and his failures. I'm pulling for him on every page and laughing on every other. Buy it and then share it.

Great bio about a tough, relentless athlete! Still has to overcome pervasive injury to get back to his standard of excellence. It will not be easy but, I would love to see him making some amazing plays again! A really good read!

I loved this book. I didn't know a lot of Julian's journey to making in the NFL and it is definitely a story worth telling (and reading).

My daughter is a huge Julian Edelman fan and she could not believe I got her the autographed version.

Your determination to succeed has been relentless. All you have gone through to get to where you are today, is very touching. Wishing you the best, always.

Great story about believing in yourself

I'm usually a slow reader, like a book a month if that kind of slow. I read this book in less than a week. I was so sad when it was finished. I love learning about the upbringings of my favorite sports stars and how they got to where they are today. The great thing about this book is it's educational too, he doesn't just tell you a play that they played or the defense played against him he goes in to detail about what that means and what it looks like on the field. There are inserts from people in his life, from family to his agents to Brady, Coach Belichick and Robert Kraft, I found it fascinating to read what they had to say about him as a person and a player. If you're a sports fan, football fan, Patriots fan or just want a really good book that will educate and give you a behind the scenes look in to an NFL player's life then this is the perfect book for you. I would recommend this book to anyone.

As a life long fan of the New England Patriots, this book was an excellent read. Not only a biographical of one of my favorite players and toughest guy in the NFL, but also candid insight into the field and locker room of the Patriots. Anecdotal story telling a must read for any New England Patriots fan or football fan in general. Narratives of Edelman's interactions with players like Randy Moss, Teddy Bruschi, and Tom Brady are entertaining!

Surprisingly good and very enjoyable. Even if you are not a Pats fan (and most people outside of greater Boston are not) you'll appreciate the persistence, will, and effort that it took Julian to succeed against all odds. Tom Curran, a local Boston sports writer was the "ghost writer". He covers the Patriots and apparently even stayed with Julian's family out in CA. He did a great job.

I love this book by Tom Curran and Julian Edelman. I like the format of Julian telling his story as a kid growing up all the way to becoming a Super Bowl champion. The setup of the book includes great stories told by family members, brother, sister, mom, and his dad. Also, current and former coaches, players, and others also are included. The overall book is awesome and really tells all Julian's thoughts and experiences in detail; I really felt I learned a lot of what it takes to become a professional athlete better than any other book from any sport athlete.

I'm going to be biased because Edelman is my favorite player. I pre-ordered the book (before we knew he would be out for the season) so I was especially pleased that it arrived when it did. I was able to get my Edelman fix this season, even without him playing. I loved his honesty and determination throughout the book and it made me like him even more.

Well written biography of a young man who gave his most to the best that he could . The book is not spellbinding nor filled with intrigue and does lack some degree of internal reflection. However it is a story t-of true grit. Most importantly for me is that Mr. Edelman describes his close relationship with his father and family. It seems to be a resounding theme in successful athletes how important their fathers were n their childhood and development as young adults.

First of all, I'm a huge Patriots fan with a 5-month old grandson named Julian, so this is obviously a fantastic book! But really, it is a great read, very inspiring and informative for those of us who can never get enough of our team and their back-stories! I wish JulianE a full recovery and a long career, and many years of happiness with his beautiful daughter.

There’s no other way to start this review of multiple-Super-Bowl-Champion-New England Patriot-Julian Edelman… except at unrelenting… take no prisoner… accept no excuses… hold on to my coattails… and dedicate yourself to greatness… or get the holy hell out of my way… and you may as well get off my team… if you don’t like it… WAAARRRPPPP-SPEEEEED! Oh yea…. And don’t forget… one of the holiest family mantras… for the Edelman’s… and mine… **NO SNIVELING**!! Julian’s storytelling starts fast… and remains fast… from start to finish. Coming from a family that had nothing… and having never been blessed with physical size… in a game… that is tilted heavily in the direction of behemoths… Julian (and his siblings) were always told…. Actually ordered… to never snivel… and keep working harder than anyone else. Edelman’s Father… Frank… worked Julian non-stop… regardless of the sport… baseball… basketball… football… regardless of the season… with the rage of a dictator. At times the two would go at each other… snarling… and even with baseball’s being thrown at each other. As they both said… (and I wholeheartedly agree)… though in today’s milk-toast-politically-correct society… Frank probably would have been arrested. The same could be said of my family… but that’s the way many people that want what you have accomplished… without having to have paid the same price… view this “you-can’t-hold-me-down-street-fighting-mentality”… this roughly-beautiful-poetic… innate desire and commitment… view this kind of dedicated-drive… when they look from the outside… in! This book… is about more than just being successful in sports… it’s about… a desire… and dedication… to being successful in anything in life. A potential reader… would have to be blind… to not grasp immediately… that no matter how “under-sized” Julian was growing up… his backbone… and heart… were bigger than ten goliaths added together. At every level… Pop Warner… High School… Junior College… College… the Pro’s… Julian never lost an ounce of that burning… fiery… uncontrollable… fury… to be the best. The whole story is intriguing and told at breakneck speed… as at almost every level… there were people on… or involved… with the team… that were simply accepting… mediocrity… and losing seasons. Julian Edelman… was definitely not… the lit match… that you wanted to drop into such a bucket of losing gasoline. As Edelman said to his Patriot teammates at halftime of Super Bowl L1… when New England was losing 21-3… regarding how the second half was going to transpire… “IT’S GONNA BE A HELLUVA STORY, BOYS!”… And so is… this entire book *RELENTLESS*… and what a perfect title. There’s so much more I can share with you regarding individual games and statistics… and famous names… but the point of this book… can be summarized more importantly from my heart. I was raised that *LIFE ISN’T FAIR*… and so was Julian… so you find ways to “fuel yourself… with… positive-hate”… so you never stop raging… and fighting back. If there ever was a self-help-book… disguised as a football story this is it… And believe it or not… I am not a Patriot fan… but I love the Patriots… from the owner Robert Kraft… to Coach Belichick… because of the way they run a team… and they run it in an otherwise out of control sports environment… where the clowns… are running the circus… but not in New England… and what a perfect home… for the epitome… of over-achieving… Julian Edelman.

I bought this for my son and he enjoyed it very much. He also enjoyed comparing it to JE11 kid books that he also has. He felt that he was saying the same message to poeple aged 20-30 years apart or more!

If you are looking for some motivation, this is definitely a must read! Highly recommend it!

Being a Patriots fan I was curious about Julian's background. Other than actual technical terms it did not disappoint. I would have appreciated a little more on his relationship with Brady/

I am not a Patriots fan and really enjoyed the first half of the book which explained his youth and making the Patriots. After that it became an endless boring recounting of games and less personal stories and info. He also is pretty open about stuff such as his groping a female and how he needed to change and then has a baby out of wedlock and another women takes a picture of him on a one night stand. Curious to see the statistics on athletes that are not OCD which Edelman seems to be. Seems like most are not well rounded and thus not good role models.

I bought this as a gift for a Patriots fan. The reader plans to reread the book because he enjoyed it so much. He doesn't do the rereading bit often.

Really great memoir showing how determination, perseverance and commitment can get you where you want to be.

It's a Christmas gift

Nothing earth shattering or particularly enlightening in the text, but it was still a fun read for this die hard New England Patriots fan. Probably safe to say that unless you are totally into the Patriots that the book will not speak to you.

Amazing

I was anxiously awaiting this book after hearing about it because I wanted to get it for my grandson for Christmas, who is a big Patriots fan. I decided to download it to my Kindle and read it before buying it - just to make sure it was suitable. I'm glad I did because although the message is a poignant and fascinating story of working hard under difficult circumstances, the crude language used throughout is going to prevent me from buying it for him. His parents would not be happy about it, and i would not feel good about giving it to him. I wish Julian Edelman had kept this in mind while writing. I am not sure who he thinks his audience is, but was the raw language really necessary for any audience? I'll still enjoy watching him play and I admire his work ethic, But I can't help but feel a little disappointed.

Obviously Patriot fans will enjoy this book. The editing was smart because the first chapter gets right to the point, his miraculous catch in Superbowl LI. Perhaps if he had written the book at the end of his career, that would not be the start but given how recent the event, perfect… especially since he was injured and out the entire 2017 regular season. He uses that play as a description for his start and life playing football. There is a bunch of recounting football specific plays and games that those that are really into that sort of thing will enjoy, but not so much of it that makes the book unreadable to the non-inclined. I was surprised at just how many injuries he has racked up. And of note there are some obscenities for those that are concerned about younger or those that may be offended readers –I’ve seen much worse. I ranked Brady’s TB12 book at 4 stars and I give “Relentless” 5 stars. I was surprised at the amount of detail Edelman provides as insight not only into his personal life but also into the Patriot cult –while he is still a member. He touches on the good moments and the times that made us cringe without dwelling or making excuses. The thing that bumped it to 5 stars for me were the amazing inset commentaries from various people in his life, family, friends, team-mates, Mr. Kraft… at various stages in his path, and the Epilogue felt truly honest and written from the heart. I was surprised he didn’t mention the children’s books he’s also written. I was on the elibrary wait list 3 months from release date. The timing turned out to mesh perfectly for me to read the week leading into Superbowl LII and watching “Tom vs Time” FB clips including a bit of Edelman footage. Let's begin with me looking up the definition of relentless: "oppressively constant; incessant( "continuing without pause or interruption")." Appropriate title is appropriate. Just when you think you know football you read a Memoir by a player you know little to nothing about and are left feeling like you also know little to nothing about football. Whereas he lives and breathes the sport you are a casual fan. Discovering his work ethic and never give up attitude and basically an eff the haters approach to everything, Julian did what it took to not only make it to the NFL, but make it under the wings of Bill Belichik and Tom Brady. Reading a book about a Patriot, as a Giants fan was interesting. I put my allegiance aside and just took in all that Julian had to say. I even squee'd at the what might have been finding out he did indeed talk to the Giants seriously when his contract with the Pats was up; but he knew in his heart he was born and bred to be a Patriot and that Boston was his city even if he came from California like his bff; Tom Brady. Not only did I get a good perspective of Julian in this book I got impressions of his Father, Brother, Sister, and fellow players like Tom Brady, and Rob Gronkowski. Even a small hindsight of the human disaster that was Aaron Hernandez- little did I know he could play football. Julian makes him sound like a likable person, but having the hand up on history and real life- such an unfortunate ending for him. And I will also admit, Julian is one hell of a storyteller. I was gripped on his every word. I even took a pen to the book (I can hear people cringing to this fact) and underlined quotes and things I wished to go back through and look at again. I know you need to be a special kind of person to read a book like this, but if a diehard Giants fan like me can read this, and like and appreciate the guy- anyone can. The moral of his entire story I pretty much pictured the Little Engine that Could. He thought he could and he did, no matter what his size and the obstacles and naysayers in his way.

Such an inspirational story of a man accomplishing his dream in the realm of football. This is a biography of a Julian Edelman from childhood to his second Super Bowl win in 2017. You learn about his childhood, his parents & grandparents, as well as his football background from childhood to high school and then his amazing career with the Patriots. There are intimate details that most fans don’t know about Edelman’s experiences as well as fascinating play descriptions for true aficionados of football.

I loved this book from start to finish. I'm not a professional football player but I found Julian's story very relatable. It helped inspire me at a time when it seemed like people were telling me to give up on one of my goals. While I loved the book, I feel obligated to say that I think it's terribly written in terms of grammar and the writing style took me a while to get used to. It sounds like they just interviewed people (including Julian) and then just wrote down whatever they said verbatim, but once you get used to that it's an excellent book. Maybe it would sound better as an audiobook.

This book was the perfect summer read this year! For someone not into football the ONLY parts that threw me off was the football stats. But I loved how he addressed every scandal in detail, how he was raised in detail, his thoughts in detail. Read it in a week while working 40 hours a week, every time I picked it up didn't wanna put it down.

Got this as a gift to my brother, he loved it. It's a story that I think all die hard pats fans will love and provides the perfect gift for anyone–besides falcons fans–. Its well written and is a great store about the Super Bowl and Edelman's amazing catch. Highly recommend giving it a read.

Relentless by Julian Edelman is a memoir about a football player on the New England Patriots. It is all about football and all the hard work demanded for professional NFL players to be successful. I enjoyed reading about Mr. Edelman’s journey and found his early start in football very interesting. Throughout the book there are small excerpts written by others regarding Julian Edelman that I found interesting as well. I never realized he had so many injuries during his career! There are a lot of game highlights that he shares too that I enjoyed. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a Patriots fan or who likes playing football and has dreams of becoming a pro.

I'd probably give it a 5, but after page 21, the book started over at page 1, then jumped from page 22 to 55. It's a misprint. Will update after I get a replacement.

I'm a Pats fan so I found it an interesting read. The co-author must be good because the words sounded like they were coming from Edleman. I was disappointed that it did not contain any mention of his four-game suspension for PED use, which I think happened during the period covered by this book. NTL, it is an inspiring story and reminded me of "Rudy".

Relentless is a great insight into Julian’s mindset. His determination and resilience is evident throughout. A great read not just for patriots fans but for people who face or have faced adversity. There are some great photos in there too.

I’m no Patriots fan, but this book goes some way to explaining a lot of their success, perhaps unintentionally. The Edelman work ethic appears to be the norm. A good read indeed.

A great read about the importance of working hard to reach your goals and believing in yourself.

Nach dem Buch von Sebatian Vollmer ist dies bereits die zweite Biographie eines NFL Spielers, die ich mit großem Interesse gelesen habe. So unterschiedlich die beiden als Typen sind, so einig sind sie in ihrem bedingungslosen Arbeitsethos für den Sport, in dem Ignorieren bzw. Ausblenden von Verletzungen und dem Siegeswillen. Ein empehlenswertes Buch, zwar auf Englisch aber trotzdem einfach und flüssig zu lesen.

Fantastic book. You don't even have to be a Patriots fan or maybe even a football fan to appreciate how Julian has gotten to where he is. His story was told easily and flowed well. It's a great example of how to not listen to people who tell you that you cannot do something, when you know you can. Well done, Jules.
