A National Jewish Book Award–winning biography: A look at the early years of Israel’s statehood, experienced through the life of a pioneering nurse. During her extraordinary career, nurse Raquela Prywes was a witness to history. She delivered babies in a Holocaust refugee camp and on the Israeli frontier. She crossed minefields to aid injured soldiers in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War and organized hospitals to save the lives of those fighting the 1967 Six-Day War. Along the way, her own life was a series of triumphs and tragedies mirroring those of the newly formed Jewish state.

Book Review--Raquela, A Woman of Israel by Ruth Gruber Of the 39 book reviews of this book on Amazon, 38 give Raquela 5 stars--one is 4 stars. This is, first of all, a true story. When Ruth Gruber, a foreign correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune set out in Israel to find one woman whose life "would define what it means to be a woman of Israel" (Gruber, Raquela, Forward), she found many candidates. When she heard of a ninth-generation Jerusalemite, whose family settled in Jerusalem in 1650 from Spain, who was a nurse and midwife who had delivered babies in the camps at Athlit and Cyprus for the Jewish illegal immigrants who flocked to their promised land after World War II, she knew she had found her subject. The book begins in Jerusalem in 1929 when Raquela (the Sephardic, meaning Spanish, version of Rachel) was five years old. Her family lived in Bet Hakerem three miles from the center of Jerusalem, described as a "neighborhood [that] was founded in 1922 as one of six garden cities developed in Jerusalem during the days of the British Mandate for Palestine" (wikipedia.com). The Arabs from the village of Colonia rose up and murdered the people of Motza, a nearby Jewish village, then looted and burned their houses. The book explains that this was the second riot since the Balfour Declaration of November 2, 1917, which stated, "His Majesty's Government (the British) views with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people." And, while the British police did nothing, the Arab terrorists went to Hebron, where Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and their wives Sarah, Rebecca, and Leah were buried, and murdered all the prominent Jewish families. When the British police finally came, they rounded up the rest of the Jews of Hebron (not the Arabs) and locked them up in the police station "for their own protection." These people were never allowed to return to their homes which were ransacked by the Arabs. From this time forward, there was no peace in Palestine. The book takes us through the time when Raquela was twelve years old and she and her mother were on a bus traveling downtown to go shopping for her Bat Mitzvah. The bus was attacked by Arabs with guns and a hand grenade that miraculously exploded before it could be thrown in the bus. On January 31, 1943 Raquela enrolled in the Hadassah (Hebrew name for Queen Esther, see Jeremiah 8:22) Henrietta Szold School of Nursing where she studied nursing and midwifery under her mentor, the renowned obstetrician Dr. Aron Brezezinski. Raquela Levy graduated as a nurse/midwife on February 7, 1946 and was selected "the outstanding student" in her class. Politically, because of The White Paper of 1939 issued by the British government under Neville Chamberlain, Palestine was partitioned into an independent Arab state and a Jewish state "in proportion to their population numbers in 1939"--which meant Palestine was virtually controlled by the greater number of Arabs. Jewish immigration was limited to 75,000 over a five-year period from1940 to 1944--then all immigration would depend on the permission of the Arab majority. During this time the Holy Land "became a police state." The British brought in "one hundred thousand soldiers ...to keep order." Jerusalem was a mass of barriers and "rusted coils of barbed wire" where tanks and armored cars patrolled the streets. The stamina, courage, industry, and determination of the Jewish people is obvious in this book. If you are one of those who knows little of the history of Israel, you will be enlightened, but also entertained with the story of the remarkable life Raquela. The facts of how Israel became an independent nation with all the hardships and wars for independence are the rest of the story. Gruber weaves the heroic deeds of a woman of Israel into the compelling narrative of birth--not only of babies born in horrible conditions in British refugee camps--but also the difficult birth of the State of Israel.

The true story how Israel became a nation.

An amazing biography, well written. The true story of Israel and The great sacrifices of the Jewish people.

How could I have lived so long and never heard about Raquela? Learning about her life has enriched my own. And I’m honored also to learn about the remarkable woman who wrote this book, Ruth Gruber. The strength and dedication of these women make me want to be like them.

A nurse’s nurse

This is a story of a true woman of Israel who’s calling was to heal the women of Israel from the cruel Cypress camps to Hadasah Hospital. She served through the birth of Israel and through the Yom Kippur War. Her sacrifices were many. Yet she endured. This book tells the story of this remarkable person.

Raquela

Amazing! Really enjoyed this biography. Learned alot of things that I did not know about Israel. I’ve known that the many Arabs hate Israel and are willing to do whatever it takes to annihilate all Jews and the state of Israel! What I did not know was the many many wars that Israel has fought. Amazing people! What many people do not realize or even want to is that no matter what Israel and her people belong to God! They will never be completely annihilated. God has promised that those who bless Israel will be blessed and those who curse Israel will be cursed. It matters not if it is a person or a nation! God has promised and He never breaks a promise/covenant!

Great book by Ruth Gruber

This is an amazing book. It is a page turner, although I am reading it more slowly as I want to take it in more and not finish too fast. Ruth Gruber was an amazing writer. I am sad she is gone now at 105 in 2016. Her life itself was an amazing life, spanning World War II, etc.. This book really provides an inside look at what it was like in Israel after the war when Israel had to fight to exist. It is nothing short than a miracle of God that they did. The evil of the British at that time is mind boggling. The British government treated the Jews that had been released from prison camps almost as badly as the Nazi's did. I still don't get it. It is very much the personal story of Raquela, but also the story of the early beginnings of Israel. There is so much I didn't know or understand about that time period. I am a lover of Israel and believe that they will prevail as God will never forsake them. Anyone who has any interest in Israel should read this book.

A People... a Land... an amazing story of overcoming. Thank you, Ruth Gruber.

I loved this first-hand account of Ruth Gruber's life- beginning as a young child in Jerusalem to becoming a highly respected nurse/midwife during that time in history when hundreds of thousands of Jewish refuges came to Israel from the horrific prison/extermination camps in Germany. They came to the Promised Land rejoicing at this fulfillment of their dream of freedom, and of finally being able to establish a new life in Israel... only to find themselves once again in prison camps! In utter dismay, they are confined behind barbed-wire fences where they lived more years without the freedom they longed for. Though excruciatingly painful to read at times, the author paints for us a clear and haunting portrait of a brave people with an indomitable spirit who continue to overcome their circumstances. Ruth G.- who has her own share of tragedies, takes us on an unforgettable journey that will not be forgotten.

A fabulous book I couldn't put it down. I learned so much!!!!

This is an amazing book. I recommend it highly. It's so hard for people to comprehend the history of the Jewish people and their suffering. The events of the various wars are presented so well by Ruth Gruber that they are spellbinding! I saw the leaders of the world lacking in many respects . War is simply 'legalized theft! It tries to legitimize rape, torture, and murder on a worldwide scale! And through it all there was also love, endurance and hope for a better future.

Excellently written

While it is the story line that holds my attention, it is the writing style that keeps me glued to the pages. The author's writing style is one of the most fluid I have ever read and she taps into feelings that women feel but never think about. The author takes note of tiny details that others would not notice or mention. While we follow the main character we are learning parts of the history of Israel that are rarely if ever taught.

The story of the nation of Israel, told through someone who lived it.

Ruth Gruber wanted to tell the story of the nation of Israel. To do so she wanted to find a true 'woman of Israel'. She found Raquela, who was a 9th generation Israeli. Beginning in the 1940s Raquela's story is told - nursing school to become a midwife, dealing with news of Hitler's atrocities against the Jews. Further tragedy when the Jews were rescued from the camps, and then had no 'homeland' to return to. Thousands of them ended up in refugee camps which were not much better than where they had been. Raquela is sent to some of these camps to care for the pregnant women there, to deliver their babies, as well as delivering hope of eventual freedom. The book is an excellent history lesson from the point of view of one who lived it. The Arab-Israeli conflict is nothing new, and the Jews still struggle to claim their 'homeland'.

amazing story, well written

I read this book about 15 years ago and remember loving it. I accidentally found it again as a kindle book and purchased it. The story of this woman's life is fascinating and I could hardly put it down. Her life mirrors the fight for an Israeli state and she was involved in many crucial events. The author helps you to see the world through Raquela's eyes. I read this book along with a story of a Palestinian doctor from Gaza

Remarkable

A look at the modern history of Israel through the eyes of a remarkable woman. This is an incredibly moving story on so many levels. Not only does Raquela participate in the key events of Israel's formation, she helps shape them. The description of The Six Day War is one of the best and most personal I have read. I highly recommend this book to anyone striving to understand Israel's position in the world.

History That Reads Like a Novel

This biography reads like a novel. From the very first lines, it scoops you up and transports you through time and history, allowing you to experience the rebirth and redemption of the nation of Israel. This book serves as a most thorough and engaging history lesson, disguised as an enthralling account of the life of one, amazing woman! I could hardly put this book down, and when it ended, I longed for the story to continue... which, I’m happy to say, it does. 😊

When WWII ended what happened to the Jewish people? How did Raquela fit into this period of time?

Raquela lived during a period in history that most of us would like to forget happened. Much of what this story tells has been lost on even my generation. I was very young during this time in our history, yet, I knew about the concentration camps of Germany; however, I don't remember anything about the part that the British played in the Jewish life after the war ended. Raquela grew up and became a nurse. The story centers around her life, loves, and family. Anyone interested in this time in history should read this moving story. It is a true story. The people didn't face gas chambers, but they did suffer injustice, hardships, and separation. I really was dismayed at what I read; despite the hardships these people faced, they were often sad, but strong. I stopped to think,"what would I be like under the same circumstances?" This is not light reading, although there are some fun spots. Recommended serious reading.

OUTSTANDING READ!

This is a book for everyone..all ages...both men and women and those of every faith. In all honesty, I am drawn to this type of book. It is both historical and momentous! I think I read it in 2 days...which is the good news and the bad news. I LOVE to read slowly and enjoy "living inside" the character and plot. I went through a wide range of emotions...from sadness to understanding to pride and more. I have travelled to the holy land which adds another dimension to the read.... I could visualize, wallow in empathy and develop a king-size sense of pride. In all honesty, I am a femisit who actively participated in the "Womens' Movement" of the 60's. Israeli women have provided the best examples for our mothers, daughters and all the men in our lives! Read it and enjoy................

Vivid and inspiring

Raquela’s life is a story every supporter of Israel should read. It’s details are crisp and stunning. All the work Raquela did shows the bravery and courage all Jews show in protecting Israel and making it flourish. My only regret is I don’t know where she is buried so I can pay my respects in person.

This is the second time I've read this book and I loved it just as much. Any Hadassah member would feel such pride and goosebumps when Raquel!a

,student nurse is dark b for Henrietta Szo!!d. The price we feel in what Hadassah has built o Dr the years of taking i b Israel. The pains which taken the lives of young Israelis is sore!y touching. The history of the young nation and the enemies which surround her stand out clearly. The book ends after the Yom Kippur War and sadly RAquel a does not see some of the peace come to her nation . This book is true and heartfelt and written by an a ask b journa!ist, Ruth Gruber.

great book

Really liked this book. Told the story of how Israel came to be in the view of a nurse who lived through it.

It opened my eyes to what has happened to the Jewish people.

We all know of the atrocious interment camps during the world war. But what I didn't know was what happened to so many of the survivors of the Holocaust camps. This book was full of history and yet a story about a woman who truly lived her life in the turmoil of those times. Excellant book.

This book is 'RaqueL' by Lion Feuchtwanger the German Jewish writer exiled by the Nazis to LA. It is marvelous.

Fantastic!

The book Raquela is the true story of the life of a most courageous and intelligent woman who was born in Jerusalem in the early twentieth century. I loved following her story while gaining knowledge about the birth of the modern nation of Israel. The book truly makes learning history enjoyable!

I enjoyed reading about a native Israeli who

I read this while visiting my daughter in Israel-I was there for 4 weeks. During that time, I toured the Haganah Museum (the forerunner of the IDF), the Palmach Museum (describing in vivid detail the creation and duration of Israel's "Strike Force" from 1941-1948) and the Yitzhak Rabin Museum (describing the life of the soldier, former Prime Minister and Statesman), all of which framed the background of the book about Raqulea. The writing was gripping as was the times in which Raquela lived. I enjoyed reading about a native Israeli who, like many "founders" of the State of Israel, brought such important gifts of life and ingenuity to her country and her countrymen (and women).

A Woman of Israel

I truly enjoyed this book! I love reading about the plight of Jews in the holocaust era. However, I had never read about the tribulation of Israel by the British and the neighboring states. This really enlightened me to the current concerns in Israel today. I live in Texas and I guess we have few Jews in this area, therefore I have little knowledge personnally of their seemingly undeserved persecution over the centuries. That they have endured is remarkable. That they have excelled is unbelievable. I want to thank Ruth Gruber, author, for bringing this particular story to our attention. I too am a nurse and wish I could have met Raquela. I read this book on my kindle and found that it is extremely hard to read maps on this device.

A book I will never forget.

I have followed Israel's history to a small degree, but wanted to understand it more completely. The miracle that is Israel has left me almost speechless. No one can read this book and not be affected deeply. It is only by the hand of God and the amazing will, strength and courage of the Jewish people that such a story could ever be. The story continues today, but it's not just a story it is the reality of this incredible nation of Israel and her people.

Loved this book!

Many years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Ruth Gruber at her family‘s home. When she explained her occupation and some of the books she wrote I immediately purchased this one. Couldn’t ask for a more interesting read! She is truly impressive. Loved every minute of this book and also the history throughout. Learned lots of valuable information and it’s a page turner.

Real life good guys

In our politically correct world there are few heroes. But, in this book, you read about real life heroes. A nation trying to survive against overwhelming odds. In spite of the challenges, the Israeli's continue to "do the right thing". Providing health care to Arab Muslims, even though Muslims want to exterminate Israel. A Muslim Arab has more rights and freedom in Israel, than in any other Middle Eastern nation. Israel and America are made from the same cloth. To read this book is to read about freedom, and the ideals that drive America. May we as a nation stand with Israel, so that we can be blessed by our Creator. Is it any wonder that the sun sets on the British empire, after the way they treated Israel?

history through Raquela's point of view

It refreshed my mind of the historical events that happened in Israel, what made it interesting was it was through Raquela's eyes through her lifetime. Unfortunately, in order to write events as they happened, it was dry in parts of the story and the emotion was missing

A must read

A history of Israel and Raquela. Very well written. Though it focuses on Raquela, the story is imbedded in the Jewish history during her life. Simply wonderful and also gut-wrenching.

Learn the History of the Early Years of the State of Israel the Easy Way

While learning all about the the life of Raquela, the reader gets a great feel for the challenges placed upon the Jewish people living in Palestine--and later Israel--during the formative years of the rebirth of the State of Israel. Ruth Gruber weaves into her biography of Requela the story of the great men and women who helped form the new Israel. Gruber also gives the reader the fabric of the ordinary people coming from diverse backgrounds throughout the world, as well as long-time Jerusalemites who yearned to create a safe haven for Jews by creating a nation of their own. This is a dynamic way of learning about the heritage of the Jewish people.

Amazing story of an amazing woman

An insightful story of the human spirit and what it can endure. The story of the birth of Israel told through the hearts and mind of its people.

A memoir of a great woman

An entire history lesson of Palestine leading up to the state of a Israel! ! An intimate portrayal of how Israelis have had to live under inhumane conditions and still have to now in 2014! Tragic, but inspiring that a woman like Raquela felt that Israel was the most important thing in her life and it needed to survive, no matter what! Awe inspiring that such a woman existed and helped make the state of Israel what it is today! A homeland for the Jews, and long may the flag wave! Thank you Raquela!

Best book I 've read in a long time

This true story is about a remarkable woman who was a nurse before the creation of the state o Israel. It tells the history of the country and the personal story of raquela

Raquela: A Woman of Israel

I didn't know what I was buying when I purchased this book. I think it was one of the bargain books for the Kindle so I took a chance. Turned out to be a great story. It's a love story as well as a history of Israel's recent past. It begins before WW2 and takes you well beyond statehood for Israel. It's good to review current history of places, people, and events. It keeps us aware. This is a story of a marvelous woman who achieved much in her life despite obstacles and challenges. Makes one glad to have been born in the USA.

A Jewish Heroine

I enjoyed this book very much. Raquela was a remarkable woman. I thought it was interesting that she and her Arab neighbors got along well until the governments got involved. It is amazing what people can do...that people can get along with each other, showing mutual respect and understanding. And sometimes we just have to leave the getting along to the children. But, we could follow their lead. I found the book to be well written.

Recommended

Raquela’s amazing life included many of the important events in Israel’s history. The book is interestingly dramatized, but based on her real life story......

History written as fiction.

This book could have been written about events of today. Nothing has changed. In over 60 years. I plan to read other books by this author.

Stunning historical as well as personal real life story

What a fascinating read about Post wars and their ramifications on the State of Israel. A personal view of a nurse and her professional skills and her own growth during this torrid time, beginning post Holocaust. The time commences from English rule to self government and territorial changes, leading to the need for infrastructure and amenities for the ever growing population, via waves of emmigrants and internal population growth. I adored it, and have now even arranged a trip to Israel I was so blown away by this book. Please read this well structured book. (Excuse my spelling, please).

Raquela,a woman of Israel

I really enjoyed the book. The characters were real (I know they were real people, but this account made them feel real to me--not just chararcters in a book), the events well described. As a youth I knew about the Seven Days War, had read Exodus, etc. but didn't really realize the struggles that Israel went through to become an independent nation. It was good for me to remember that freedom isn't free. I was also reminded that politician and war mongers need to listen to the people involved and stop breeding hate and discontentment!

Wonderful read

This is a spectacular read regarding the times of Israel’s beginning through the life of one who lived every moment.

Couldn't put it down

This true story was not only exciting and full of human drama, it was very informative as to the early years of the Israel State and time as it was before in Palestine for a Jewish family who had been in the land generations before 1948. This is a must to understand the history of this land prior to 1948 and in the years following. The story of Raquela was full of romance and tradgedy. An amazing read and so helpful to understand today's events in the Middle East.

Very Moving

This book reads like a novel, and yet gives the reader a complete history of the development of the State of Israel. I had heard much from my Aunt, still alive at 94 in a former kibbutz in northern Israel. Her story is detailed in my book "Long Time Passing". She and her husband fought in the Haganah. Your book added so much dimension to her tales. Thank you for writing it. And thanks to Raquela and all the people who fought and are still fighting to keep Israel free.

I loved this book

I loved this book. The story was very compelling and educational. This woman was so special. Her story is certainly worthy of knowing. Also it was an excellent account of Israel's history. It was especially interesting to read from the viewpoint of one who had lived through it.

A Book I Will Never Forget

This book had my undivided attention. When I wasn't reading it I was telling someone about it. Raquela was truly a hero. I hope that my granddaughters will read this when they are older and use Raquela as their role model. This was a different view of what went on during that horrible time. I applaude the way their entire nation became their entire army when needed. It was historical and personal and ugly but beautiful. Raquela is now one of my favorite stories.

but great story and so much information

A little too wording, but great story and so much information. Knew most of the history of Israel, but learned much more. Came away with great admiration for the Jewish people living in Israel.

raquela

I wasn't sure when I purchased this book if I would like it or not. I can tell you, after I started to read I found myself not wanting to put it down for anything else. It is a book I would recommend to any one that is interested in the fate of the Jewish people and some of their trials and hardships. How this young girl not only survives, but makes a differance to all of the people in Isarel. It is truly a moving story.

Loved this story

Loved this story. I know most of the history but so well written and entertaining. I read with while standing in line for appointments , waiting for clerks, etc. anytime I could. And a great story for Hadassah!

if you enjoy historical facts interlaced with some human story this riveting story will keep you spell bound till the last page. you will laugh and cry with Raquela and at the same time be horrified at what innocent holocaust survivors had to go through once they were liberated from the concentration camps. a human tragedy of enormous proportions written to captivate the reader.

Good personal glimpse into Israeli history

Raquela was well written. The story, while a kind of biography, flowed like a novel. It gives a good personal account and perspective of the formative years of the young nation of Israel. While her love life is included in this story, the focus is more about how she comes to terms with the situations surrounding her, both national and personal (which indirectly are also national). A good read.

An Insiders View

This was a gripping tale of the woes of the Jewish people in the claiming of their homeland. Based as it was around a family, it gave a great insight of their struggles, their cohesion, their solution to their unique problems. As a reader with only a basic understanding of this time in the history of the Jewish people I finished this book with a much greater appreciation of that time. The book was well written and very enjoyable.

I never knew

Although non-fictional, historic autobiography this book reads like a novel. Having been born in 1950 with a memory going back to 1951 and Jewish, I thought I knew the story of Israel's birth and growth quite well. I was unaware of many things that this book pointed out. It was riveting. Love, loss, suspense, sorrow, all of the feelings of a flesh and blood woman. The birth of a baby to the birth of a nation

amazing woman in a good sense of excellent characters ! excellent role model.

This true story is showing one of the best role model for a women. Once I started to read I had hard time to leave the book and can't wait to get back to it once left it ! She is good as a godly human being. She helps her family, her country, even arab people whom countries were in deadly conflict with her country. I encourage everyone to read this book. Nobody will regrette the time spent for it.

RAQUELA: A Woman of Israel

This is a beautifully written true story! I was engaged from the beginning to end Nd everything in between! History the spirit and will of these amazing pioneers forming this beautiful country! I highly recommend this book. Well done!

A first hand account of the birth of the nation Israel

This book shares the life of a remarkable Jerusalem Jewish woman coming of age during the 1940's. It tells of dealing with the loss of friendship with her Arab neighbors, being threatened with death just drivng to work, loss of loved ones and many many friends in order to establish a place where Jewish people could have a national home in the midst of a world that seemed bent on destroying the Jews simply because they were Jewish.

A story worth telling

This is more than one person's story. It's also the story of the Jewish people's fight to regain our ancient homeland.

Excellent read!

Wonderful book about Israel and the heartache they endured and continue to endure! So glad they included photos of Raquel’s and family.

a good read for about two-thirds, but then it just dragged.

A good read, especially the first half. After awhile however, it began to drag, and it just went on too long. If it had been a novel instead of a biography she could have cut the Cypress portion and deleted her love affair there. Same thing for the camp at Athlit before.

A great read!

The history of Israel told through the true story of a young woman growing up as Israel if forming a nation. Very well written and reads like a novel, but all too true. A sweet love story as well

An old favorite

I first read this book years ago as a teenager, thanks to Reader's Digest Condensed books. I was thrilled to see it in Kindle form, and couldn't wait to purchase and reread it. It was even better than I remembered. What a wonderful story and retelling of history, seen from such a personal perspective. It should be required reading, no matter which side of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict you are on.

Very Interesting Book

I learned a great deal about the history of Israel from this book. Raquela's life story follows the turbulent story of the founding of Israel. Although it was a biography, it read like a novel. Sadly I learned that time has not changed very much for Israel. It remains surrounded by the same hate and violence as it was in its beginnings. A very fascinating story.

A woman for all seasons...

I really liked this book; it was an easy read, but filled with meaningful information about the history of Israel as reflected in the life of one of its unsung heroines. I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in how Israel became a state and where some of the conflicts still so unsettling in the Middle East came from.

An Excellent novel with tasteful expressions and informative information of which I was not aware . I love this writer and plan to read more of her books..

good overall book to get the feel of the times

More like a novel but I enjoyed the history mostly. It's a good way to go through those years and get a feeling for them from someone who was there.

Great Book

I truly enjoyed this book.

History of Israel on a personal basis.

The story of a great period in the early history of Israel, told in a very personal and meaningful way.

Raquela: A Woman of Israel

Raquela: A Woman of Israel is the best book I read this year. It's a book of the history of how Israel became a state. The struggle of the Jews during and after World War II. Also the determination of Raquela to serve her country as a nurse and to help women to deliver babies as a mid-wife. I couldn't put this book down. It was fantastic.

It made me cry

This is a wonderful book. I will read it again in a couple of years. It really gave life to the story of Israel's independence wars. I loved Raquela and would have liked to known her.

Great History of the fight for Statehood

wonderful book, very informative!

Wonderful HISTORY

This is a true history of what happend to the post war Jewish refrugees when they tried to get to Isreal. It was shocking to learn that the British and French who controlled the area did not allow them to settle and they were sent to camps almost as bad as what they came from in Europe. Everyone should read this and learn.

Gruber found one woman whose life reflects modern Israel

This is non-fiction. Raquela is a ninth generation Israeli, born in the 20s, whose life parallels that of modern Israel. As a nurse midwife, she delivered thousands of babies, but she also served in DP camps and in Israel's wars. As you read her life, you read Israel's history. Ruth Gruber is a wonderful writer, and this was an excellent project for her.

Raquela

This was a fabulous read. Great story, extremely interesting and educational. Gives us a complete insight to the events leading up to statehood. All the wars, the sacrifices and the suffering of the Jewish people. Very well written, I couldn't put it down, even though I knew the story. Raquela truly was a woman of Israel. I highly recommend this wonderful book

Eye- opening picture of what it was like to live in Israel over several decades

A heartbreaking story of the life of a woman in Israel told in a very straightforward way. I can't imagine having to go through what she did and still be able to function and contribute a significant amount to your family and country. It was an easy book to read but it kept your interest the whole way.

Excellent book. Very well written.

Excellent book. Well written.

one of the better books I've read this summer....

I was inspired to read this book when my son went to Israel this summer. It was a wonderful (true) story about a courageous Israeli nurse/midwife. The book was written by the actual interviewer of Raquela, who was alive during the formation of Israel's statehood. It was full of historical facts, and was so engrossing, I could not put it down!

This was a really great book

This book was filled with history, deep feelings and was written so thoughtfully that I felt I was right there with Raquela. I learned a lot while I read this book. I also received an incite into the feelings of the people going through the extremely hard challenges just trying to survive. I loved this book.

Wondering

This was a great story about a great woman in a land of great women. The characters are well drawn, the dialogue was realistic, and the story interesting.

Good history of Israel from a woman point of view

Very good book. Should be read by all. The book shows how Jewish people long for peace yet are kept in a state of war.

Part history, part love story, kept me captivated.

I had no idea what I was going to read about but this book was a pleasant surprise. The story of an Israelite women born years ago but with the heart of a modern day feminist. The book educated me about WWII but from the view of someone living in the middle east. You will not be disappointed.

Fabulous!

Wonderful read. A fascinating history lesson and a powerful story. This book gives the reader insight into the founding of and character of the state of Israel.

Highly recommended and timely

A riveting history of the founding period of the State of Israel through the life of a dedicated nurse. Very informative about many aspects of the period not generally known. Also a gripping personal drama of a woman of valor. Highly recommended and timely.

Excellent

This book is so very good. Brings one into the land of Israel with such detail. If you've never been you will feel like you are there, if you have been to Israel you will be able to "see" what the author is describing. It is a great review of Israel's history. Good read.

Great read.

This gave such insight into the formation of Israel and its struggle for independence. I was surprised to learn of the factions involved, and of the horrific interment camps.

Hope that never dies.

This book is a must read for everyone to understand the eternal hope, that the people of Israel have in a promised land. This book gives a view of not just this woman of Israel, but of the people of Israel. From the first page the last, I was unable to put my Kindle down.

Excellent read!

This was a wonderful book, steeped in the history of Israel. The story of the individual family cleverly intertwined with all the strife taking place for Israel to become a state was very sad as well as giving historical knowledge was impressive.

Great Read

This is an excellent view of the history of Israel as told through the eyes of a remarkable woman. This should be read by all.

Raquela: A Woman of Israel

Although I have only read 20% of the above book, I am already an ardent admirer of Raquela! Also the author has included a lot of history of the Jewish people that I had no knowledge of. For people who like history, romance and excitement in their reading material, this is a wonderful choice!

A wonderful read.

A beautifully written historical and biographical story. The book is a history of the fight for the State of Israel and one woman's story in that fight and in the founding days of Hadassah, the Womens Zionist Organization. Ruth Gruber knows how to get the reader engaged with facts that keep you wanting more.

This is a must read...Israel thru the eyes of those who lived it!

An amazing inspiring book from the eyes of the nurse who was part of Israel's birth as a nation. Amazing historical facts.

Raquela: A Woman of Israel

I loved the book. Well written. Raquela was very brave for her time. What a progressive woman. I've never been very religious, but she made me proud to be Jewish. Went to Israel last year for the first time. What a country! Thank you Ruth Gruber.

Raquela

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's not just about a dedicated young woman but about the amazing struggle for the birth of Israel. I knew much of the history but have learned so much more. If you are interested in Israel as a nation, read this.

Thrilling and Inspiring!

Ruth Gruber herself is a great woman of Israel, and in this book she introduces us to someone as bold and caring as herself. The book has romance, drama, war, suspense, family, and devotion to God all wrapped up in one woman. I highly recommend the book.

Raquela Review

Highly recommend this book. Writing style is straight forward, The author portrays the history of the independence of Israel through a native Israeli who lived through and partipated in the birth of Israel. An incredible woman, an incredible story, told in an incredibly excellent manner.

Four Stars

A fascinating first-hand look at Israel's early years through the eyes of someone who lived through them.

Raquela: A Woman of Isreal

This book gave me a feeling of what it was like to live in Israel from the beginning of the new nation and what the people went through to build it. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone that enjoys history.

Five Stars

Excellent reading

I truly enjoyed Raquela: A Womnan of Israel. It made me proud to be a women, Jewish and in the medical profession. The history was fasinating, and well detailed. It kept my interest from begining to end. Have recommended it to many people.

Such a great book!

I absolutely love reading biographies of real people. The story of Raquela's life was an inspiration! It also helped fill in the gaps concerning the history of Israel becoming a nation. I WILL definitely read this book more than once!

I don't think Amazon knows what a terrific book this really is.

Raquela is a "Woman of Substance". A woman who survived concentration camps, war, and a life of trials and tribulations and still became the woman I would like to say that exist in real life, and not just in a novel.

Raquela: A Woman of Israel

Very realistically written and very believable. Great insight into what Jewish people had to deal with following WWII and as they progressed into a nation. Especially deals with doctors and nurses as they dealt with returning victims of the Hallocaust.

Excellent!!!!

Ruth Gruber draws you into the life of Raquela, a young Sabra. With her you journey through lives of refugee Jews from all over the world as seen through a woman, a nurse, a Sabra. A wonderful Historical Fiction....

Raquela: A woman of Israel

A sweeping but intimate history of Israel from a very personal point of view. Written in an expressive style that allows you to 'see' through the author's eyes and feel the love of the Jewish people for their country. Truly inspirational.

Excellent read

Ruth gruber writes this autobiography with clarity and empathy. She conveys her own feelings for the plight of immigrants and for the land of their destiny Israel . I became totally involved with Raquela and could not put it down

Courageous

Another gem for lovers of Jewish history and survival. As a nurse myself, I could relate to many situations. I admire her courage and determination to do good, to give hope and love even in the most trying, inhuman situations.

A touching read

The Israel I didn't know was brought to life through the lives and experiences shared in this story. I want to learn more of Israel and her people.

raquela

this book had me hooked from page one.. I couldn't put it down and there were parts of the book that had me in tears along with the characters involved with the story. This was some spectacular woman.

Is is about the world - not only Jews and Arabs - the good and the bad world around.

I love this book - the truth about the history of Israel - would make it a REQUIRED reading in all schools - may be people will think differently about Middle East and its real problems.

Excellent

This book was great. It kept you interested and gave you an idea of the history of Israel and its relationship to other countries. Especially how Great Britain and the US treated Israel.

Raquela

A very moving and well written book, very well researched and highly recommended. The story of her life and the history of Israel is very factual, The description of Israel is beautiful and frighting.

A Wonderful Woman

Raquela's story needed to be told. She achieved so much and suffered so much. I enjoyed the book but it became a little tiresome in sections where history was written about. I am not a history buff.
