Excellent book that captures Ralph Lifshitz..umm, I mean Lauren :) perfectly. Book is of good quality and well thought out. Highly recommend you buy. I bought it used and it came brand new so explore those options as the price for the newer ones are quite expensive.

What this book is not: A catalog of everything Ralph has designed....nor is it a catalog of select pieces....nor is it a catalog on the best pieces....nor is it a large catalog of the ads. What this book really is: A celebration of Ralph Lauren, the man, his family and the company he created. It's a coffee table book. And sure, there are pictures of past ads and past collections but that plays a secondary role in the book. If you are a Die Hard RL fan and have money to spare, there are autographed copies of this book (that cost substantially more).

This is a lovely coffee table book with wonderful photos of Mr. Lauren and his family as well as the beautiful clothes that he has designed.

Not very much on his home furnishings/ decor. 98% is the fashion, his ranch, his family-- all the things that make him who he is. I'm glad I bought it. For the price, it's a lovely book I personally wish it had more of his home line, but I still really enjoy looking at it. Great coffee table book. Be careful with shipping tho, I ordered it twice as corners came very banged up the first time. The second time still slightly damaged, but considerably less.

This is a beautiful, substantial, coffee table volumn on the life of designer Ralph Lauren. It has many great pictures and inspiring history of Lauren's rise to success as a designer.

Beautiful Book.

Accidentally got this enormous tome - Ralph is very handsome of course, with sparkling white teeth, and he always looks un-selfconscious in any sort of outfit. Nobody could wear clothes better. But only a small section shows the women's clothing collections and even less of the fabulous home decor - lots and lots of Ralph portraits - all good, but most of the book is about him. And his comments could be condensed on 2 pages. Seems pretty egotistical to make a book you can't lift full of professional selfies. We've seen most of the product pages in ads through the years - beautiful of course but nothing new. Still, he is a stunningly great designer and everything he produces is as perfect as he claims. There just isn't enough in this huge volume to look at again and again.

I had wanted to buy this incredibly beautiful book for a couple of years. It is a wonderful story of an amazing success story for Ralph Lauren and his family. The book is chock full of gorgeous photos of Mr. Lauren's life, style, and fashion. I highly recommend it to all fashionistas.

This book is gorgeous with lots of beautiful full color and large photos showing Mr. Lauren's creations over the past decades at their best. Granted that the first part of the book shows lots of photos of Mr. Lauren over the years, but those are fun to browse as well. I was considering buying the first edition published a couple of years ago, but I'm glad I waited and got this one instead, as this edition is a considerable improvement over the earlier one. The book is heavy but very well bound as any Rizzoli book and the photos are of the highest quality. This book would make a lovely coffee table book and a welcome addition to any fashion and photography collection.

If you're expecting to settle in with a nice long read about the nitty-gritty details of Ralph Lauren's life, this isn't for you (although he does share a good number of family pictures). For one thing, your arms would give out just from holding this puppy upright. This is really a giant (literally) picture-book, a peek inside the life of Ralph Lauren, followed by a photo essay of some of his more compelling and fantastic (fantastic as in "fantasy") ad campaigns. The quality of the book is as you would expect of a product associated with the brand. Fun for true RL fans.

I absolutely love this book. It is informative on the early life of Ralph Lauren and the start of his career. the pictures are beautiful of his wife and family and the models in his Collections were outstanding. I personally love the western lifestyle and the clothing that brings you back to the homespun look..... the gorgeous horses and beautiful layouts of his collections, fabrics and his personal collection of antique cars. This is a keeper.....great for coffee table conversation.

This book is beautiful! I bought it as a present for a friend who is a RL collector. It looks wonderful on the coffee table. Full of large, color photos. A great gift for any collector.

The content and style of the book is as good as expected. A tear on the dust jacket right cover which was unexpected. But still, it was delivered timely and the overall quality was good.

I have alwasy been drawn to buying classic styles. I grew up in the UK and the classic styles of the 50's and 60's have always influenced me. I hadn't really thought about a style guide until I saw this book and it macthes my inspirations completely. I love the classic men's dress of the major cities like London and New York but am also a cowboy at heart vacationing in Montana and Wyoming. Ralph Laurne has captured these inconic styles in this well presented book. I would recommend it.

I love Ralph Lauren clothes and the book gives me ideas in creating his look. I read the book in one evening. It was fast reading, I loved looking at his past styles from the 70's to current and it shows his style is CLASSIC. If your a Ralph Lauren fan it's diffinetly worth purchasing the book. I have to admit I felt I was reading a story book. The book is also very heavy to lift. You need to be strong.

For my purposes the book was very useful and beautifully chronicled. So much so, I wish there had been even more of his designs put in, but it would have been huge. No one has created the signature he has branded to so many areas; fashion, home and now the restaurant and with such style, detail and focus. I loved it!

Expected a better quality and better concept and photography. The book is big and filled but just misses the mark by a long shot in a GREAT photography book of a creative journey in this man. I had no choice to keep it and give it as a gift but wish I was able to return it.

I was really hoping this book would be more of celebration of the Bedford Hills anglophilic Ralph Lauren that I most closely associate him with. There is a brief portrayal of this side of Ralph Lauren and his ivy-league style, but not nearly as in-depth as I had hoped.

Oh, boy. Why, oh why did I spring for this hefty ad for Ralph Lauren? The person and the products. Granted, it's a beautiful book, but the guy inserts a lengthy first chapter of nothing but pictures of himself looking good throughout the years. It's invites disdain and proves to be the ultimate turn-off. Mr. Master Manipulator. This should have been a private printing for family and friends.

It's a beautiful, massive book which I'm happy to say has now been printed in a smaller version - but I was wildly disappointed in the lack of photographs of his legendary interiors! The archives are full of them, so where are they? I thought there were far too many images of gorgeous looking people doing nothing, and the fuzzy quality of some pics leaves a lot to be desired. An entire book devoted to the interiors would make me a very happy man. I always felt that his interiors far outshone the clothes.

No other designer has been more inspired by Hollywood in theatrically portraying his clothing designs in a fantasy world of outrageous priviledge, impossible beauty, understated elegance and grace. Mr. Lauren's wisest choice was contracting photographer Bruce Weber to bring his obsessive vision combining English-Aristocratic-Refinement with Rugged-All-American-Athletic-Sexiness to a public hungry for classic,lockjawed Wasp (tennis, anyone?) style. This outrageously proportioned 21century monster of a book shouts not only of the power of marketing and sustained image building, but of the consuming public's fierce desire to escape through the old-fashioned values and traditions in a crazy-chaotic-angry increasingly unpredictable, violent world. Mr. Lauren's unshakable and highly detailed vision includes re-imagining The American West,The Tropical getaway, African Safaries, Horse-Country Houses, College Life and Romance as well as the Modern, Urban loft living at it's chicest. Is it any wonder that he dressed the cast of Robert Redford's The Greaty Gatsby? The dream team behind the dream book.A uniquely American retail success story.

I was expecting this book to have pictures of outfit designs or his best selling items, but it is mostly about Ralph Lauren himself. Most of the pictures are just regular family photos. I don't have anything bad to say about this book, but I recommend the Thalen Kane novel Elegant Casual Style for Men if you want to create a wardrobe you can use every day, but not look too formal. It's mostly pictures of outfits on an actual guy along with some comic relief about fashion and shopping. The comedy is a little dry and possibly British, but it seems to make the reading of the book go faster.

First....This is an AWESOME book. No doubt about it. It is HUGE. It weights 14 1/2 pounds!!! It is really beautiful. The photos are just what you'd expect from Mr. Ralph. Sweeping, grand and elegant. There are over 700 photos..Large and small. Not a lot of text but enough to keep you well wrapped up. BUT....Well...Really 2 buts....I am a HUGE fan of Lauren's western vintage inspired line of clothing called "RRL" or "Double RL". Have been since 1993. Was a little let down that there are only about 8 pics related to this line which Ralph admits many many times is his true passion and love in his vast empire of styles and brands. On the upside...There are LOTS of photos from the first western collection in 1979 that was really the groundbreaking for all his RRL and Western/Roughwear/Santa Fe collections since. Many not seen in some 25 years. AA++ on that. SECOND BUT....There are little to NO STORE photos. Inside or out of the shops. In my humble opinion...This is about 75% of Lauren's pure gift. HIS STORES!! There are unlike any other stores in the world!! Th sheer scope that each store has..It's own style depending on it's location, the accents, the style direction, etc. You can spend hours just wondering through his stores in awe. MAJOR minus in this book. DDD--- Upside again....There are many many photos NEVER published before. Most from early ad spreads. Lauren's early ads were often 15 to 20 magazine pages long...Like mini movies. Remember them all quite well from my early adulthood. Very nice to see new/old images. AAA+++ OVERALL...Excellent book. We all know Lauren could have (without any effort due to the wealth of material to draw from) split this book up into 3 or 4 or even 5 volumes. His life, the stores, the ads, the designs...hell....even the millions of dogs just used in his ads alone could fill a 200+ page coffee table book. I guess to totally cover all the Lauren aspects, you'd need a 30 pound book! If you and Mr Ralph are very very close friends. You will WANT this book. Well worth the hefty price. Thanks Mr. Ralph for 40 years of letting us live our movies with you as the director, scripter and set designer. GREAT RIDE!! P.S. You will need a REALLY BIG and REALLY strong coffee table for this book. Take my word.

I had the opportunity to view this book in the store and it is gorgeous. Gigantic glossy photographs, many of Ralph Lauren and his family. I was waiting for this book to come out because I am a huge Ralph Lauren fan. That said, in my mind, I sort of thought this book would dissect his fashions over the past four decades. While his styles have the reputation of being timeless, the designer certainly has evolved and a book that started with his ties to his initial designs, perhaps examples of the tweed jacket he bought for his wife, etc. then moving to the polos, Blue and Black Label, Home and lifestyle, that would have made a fantastic book. This is not quite a book on the evolution of Ralph Lauren designs over the past four decades. This is more a collection of very beautiful photographs and some editorial. It is beautiful, no question. But had I purchased it sight unseen, I would have been expecting a different book, a forty year retrospective, with initial designs, runway, retail versions, fabrics, British lifestyle influences, etc.

Nice book -- could have been shorter and more to the point about his beautiful clothes and interiors. Wasn't particularly interested in Ralph's life story or his family. It is the fantasy of the American aristocrat that I go into his shops and imagine living -- not what its like to grow up in the Bronx. Otherwise the 2nd and 3rd parts are great and if you need a door stop, this book does double duty!

This book is a beautiful photographic compilation of the lifestyle of Ralph Lauren. It serves as a symbol what the brand Polo represents. I personally bought this book and was fortunate to have it signed by Ralph Lauren himself. It is something I love to have on my coffee table. However, keep in mind that it is costly and heavy so you better have a spot for it.

Fortunately I rented this book from the library because man it would have been a waste of money. It's a HUGE book, which I was extremely excited about at first, thinking the photos of the outfits would be beautiful. But unfortunately the book is all about himself. Printed in Italy by Rizzoli you'd better have your chauffeur pick you up when you tote this baby - it is a whopping 14.6 lbs of paper and ink. The accompanying text is simple, elegant and sincere, page 29 "Personal style is about having a sense of yourself and of what you believe in , which is basically self-confidence.When you have that confidence you can wear whatever you want and project something personal about who you are and what you feel.Dressing,then,can be an adventure.You can dress for the role you are playing on a particular day." The premier American designer and virtual pioneer of the global classic american lifestyle brand(ing) exemplifies American ideals of freedom / paradox by explaining that it is after all about belonging AND being an individual...I surrender! There are tons of pictures black and white and color, chronicling the product and RL lifestyle, in honor of the 40th anniversary of the label.It's a great book to have.

Why would anyone spend so much for a book of ads? No doubt about it, the guy has great taste: in clothes, models, furnishings, autmobiles, everything, in fact, except his egotistical presentation of himself. I see this overweight tome on (industrial strength) remainder shelves all the time. There's no need to hurry on down to your nearest used-book store; there are plenty left. Just don't forget to take your baggage cart or strongest friend along.

This was purchased as a gift and was a real winner. The book is masterfully done and the quality is far above average. If you are into Mr. lauren's products or high fashion, you will not be disappointed. However, your house guests may become captivated during their visit and ignore you...great item to have and worth the money.

While I think that Ralph Lauren is the best American Designer of the last 50 years, this book is about Ego gone out of control. This should have been a personal book given to his kids. It seems like Ralph wanted the thickest paper, the heaviest possible book, all for a homage to himself. While Ralph's clothes are usually well done, he is not the right model for them. No matter how he trys to make himself appear Western or Romantic or any other guise, he still looks like a short balding older man who isn't pretty to look at. My friend and I when we looked at this book at Barnes & Nobles couldn't believe what an Ego Maniac Ralph appears to be. Again Ralph is a brilliant designer but this book is more about pics of Ralph.

Big marketing advertisement for the Ralph Lauren Brand. Rehashing advertising campaigns for images. The book size and format is as large as one book could ever be - I guess relative to the large brand it speaks to. The bio of Ralph is mildy interesting and a quick read. A very rosy, glossy overview of the life of Ralph - an ideal life right out of the 1950's. The book confirms that the upper crust, waspy society American style has been marketed to the masses with that iconic Polo pony found on everyone from Upper East Side families,hip hoppers in Brooklyn to Japanese tourist in the Mall of America, Minn. It is not ugly, it is not particularly innovative or high style - it is just everywhere.

Nothing short of stunning imagery and style unmatched in the world of fashion. Never chasing trends or playing second to any one else's dreams, Mr. Lauren clearly lives his vision, his stories, the epic movies he creates with a passion and dedication not found anywhere in fashion these days. He allows us all a peek into his very private life with his lovely family in a huge Italian made book filled with his creations, inspirations and humble "American Dreams Come True" zest for life. His name is on the book and his life's portrait is painted for all to see and appreciate. There is a certain honesty and respect for Ralph Lauren that for 40 years in the industry he has maintained his direction and unwavering philosophy for what life is really about... Family, working hard and sharing.

If you are a Ralph Lauren / Polo enthusiast as I am; I have been buying everything he makes for the last 37 years, you have to appreciate this compilation of photos spanning all his years of creating various products. They are beautifully done and give you an appreciation of the life style he has made available for the USA and now the world.

I love this coffee table book, however the book came damaged. The upper corner is dented and the outer paper cover is torn on the corner. This was supposed to be displayed on my coffee table but I can't display it now due to the condition of the book.

Mafia Ick

For the ultimate reflection on Ralph Lauren and considering it's size and weight, this book is pretty underwhelming. Pages seem to be made from cheaper paper and pictures are less than expected print quality. I expected more both in finish and substance.

In spite of what many of the reviews appearing here will lead you to think, this is not the first edition of this book. That was an enormous, gigantic tome that required a lot of effort just to lift. This edition is about half the size of the earlier one but still pretty large. Some of the photos have been replaced. We still get way, way, way too many photos of Ralph Lauren and his picture-perfect family and very few samples of the significant couture collections. Additionally, many of the high-end designs that are shown are much too extravagant and outlandish for practical, realistic use. Also, instead of the sheer excess of personal photos, the space should have been used for a decent retrospective of vintage Lauren advertisements and products from the 70s and 80s (his best years, in my opinion). I would have loved to see the classic early home collections in chronological order and, of course, all of the men's outfits from the film "The Great Gatsby". Also a detailed tour of the flagship store in New York would have been nice. Otherwise i found the book a rather glossy look back at the label through the years, although I could have done with a little less self-congratulating and self-importance. That is generally laid on much, much too thickly. In the last decade or so Ralph Lauren has diversified (metastasized?) to such a ridiculous, overblown degree that no book could possibly capture the sheer excess of the now countless bed and home collections (more and more uninspired and lacking in innovation with every passing season), the endless parade of bland and similar-looking dinnerware patterns (just about everything licensed out), and the ever-changing and ill-advised styles of sportswear (with the inevitable drop in style and quality). What used to be a classy, somewhat elitist fashion niche has grown into a bloated, gargantuan retail empire with far too many labels and styles, including absurdities such as restaurants and hip hop inspired clothes (!). Crass marketing and a desire to appeal and sell to just about everybody have totally taken over and it has almost completely eroded the exclusive cachet that the brand originally had. Mr. Lauren himself has become rather tiresome in his egomania. Not a week passes without at least one or two ceremonies or presentations honoring Ralph The Great. Here he is accepting the key to New York City, there he is receiving yet another award or trophy, and over there he is being presented with a medal or two for even something else. If he's not appearing on Oprah, he is somewhere in the world being showered with gross fawning as he inaugurates yet another mega-store. And don't get me started on his motorcar museum (mausoleum?) or his posing in jodhpurs and full polo regalia when he hasn't once played the sport in his life. Enough already with the self-aggrandizing and the attention grabbing. Please. Everything is furnished like a Ralph Lauren store, with huge mounds of merchandise - cushions, blankets, rugs - displayed everywhere. Not at all like a realistic picture of a real home, however grand. The only things missing are the price tags. The property extends for miles, literally. That, more than anything, shows the man's obsession with gigantism. He lives in a property so immense that he'll never see all of it! Could all of this be a reaction to the fact that Ralph is actually quite short? Anyway, check out the video. Oprah costumed in full cowgirl gear, like a badly overweight Calamity Jane, is absolutely hilarious and not to be missed! The sad part is that she doesn't know how silly and laughable she looks. I'm sorry if I sound too critical and longwinded, but Ralph Lauren initially had a wonderful and rich style that has become quite diluted and corrupted by his greed and vanity. If that's all right with you, you'll love this book and it will look good on your coffee table.

I read about the Ralph Lauren book in a book review. I was interested in the book because we love the Ralph Lauren brand in our household. The first thing that struck me upon receiving the book is the size. It's huge! But, once I started reading it I spent the entire afternoon pouring over it. I couldn't tear myself away. It's stunning and typically iconically classic. It also looks great on my coffee table!

This is one great book! I highly recomend it. It's expensive, but it's worth the money. Any Ralph Lauren fan or fashion fan should own this book. I look at it all the time. The pictures are beautiful!

I expected a book with more of Ralph Lauren's early career and more home design. It is an elegant book; however, did not want page after page of pictures of Ralph. A regular guy from NYC born with the best taste on the planet, who lives the American dream, could come up with something more than a 14 pound book of magazine advertisements.

It is the story of RL's career and expresses both his philosophy of design and a personal view of his achievments. A must read and see for those interested in the fashion world or the business of building an impeccable brand image.

A table top book tribute to the ego of Ralph Lauren. If you want to look at page after page of Ralph Lauren posing and showing how wonderful he thinks he is, this is the book for you. However, the few pages of his family and other models are beautifully done and if you look around him, in the back ground you will see some nice pictures of his Colorado ranch.

A stunning pictorial of the work from a man who has brought his imagery and quiet, good taste to a public that has been, at times, jaded by the neon excesses of our modern age. His vision and influence have not wavered and we, as the public, are all the better for it.

This is a great book. And HEAVY! Lots of pictures and his own writings of how his career came to be. Highly recommend for the RL fan.

Mostly pictures of Ralph himself. Would have liked to see more inspiration and background to his amazing collections in rtw, home and men's.

I bought a floor lamp cost $500+ without the lamp shade delivered. The customer service promised me to ship a new lamp shade after obtaining my new address. However, the never told me this would gonna to be a discontinued product, and the didn't retain any lamp shade for me neither. Until recently, I request them to ship me the missing shade that I know the truth. They blamed for the new shipping address is not available that they can't offer the discontinued one, and compensate for only $100 "gift certificate". That only accounted for the domestic shipping fee and tax I have ever paid. Only return can make credit back possible. I think it is meaningless and cheap compensation, for I don't want to pay any cent on the products of Ralph Lauren.

Unlike the Tom Ford book this heavily picture orientated production has many years and Ralph Lauren styles to call upon. His extraordinary ability to take the past and it's references and re-invent them with his team is terrific. Like Tom Ford this is as much about styling as design but in the case of Ralph Lauren it is an extraordinary achievement over many years. Orientalism, Navajo, British County, Beaton Romantic, Preppy, Sporty, Old School, Hollywood Golden Age, how many stories has he successfully interpreted through clothing, photography and interiors? This book is a joy to refresh the memory of the range of styles the Ralph Lauren team have offered over the years and always in the most impeccable quality. Those unconvinced by the style and manner of the house will remain so, but to have created this legendary brand, label and house is a great achievement. This book beautifully captures and encapsulates it.

If you love fashion then you will love this book. Inspiration on every page, a true legend of fashion.
