Quiltmaker's 1,000 Blocks: A Collection of Quilt Blocks from Today's Top Designers

Great book. I highly recommend for quilters who love to make blocks.

I'm a beginner quilter so some of the patterns are beyond my current skill level but there are many that are within my skill level. I do have two complaints about the book. One the directions with the blocks are not very detailed which may not be a problem for more experienced quilters. That being said I've done two of the patterns so far without any problems. I've only done 6 pieces / blocks of any quilting. Second complaint is the index in the back only lists patterns by designer. So you can't search by key words. For example there are two robot patterns in the book but you have to go through every page to find them. Overall very good but gets 4 out of 5 stars because of two reasons I listed above.

This book is great and has instructions for each block along with pictures. Great resource for beginning quilters and even those who've been quilting for awhile.

I love this big book. I am always looking through it. I'm a beginner at trying to quilt and This has helped to sew a couple of blocks. Thank you.

The amount of blocks included is nice, I can see lots of possibilities. The only downfall I see is that they are not indexed by type or keyword. I’m looking for some star patterns and I have to look through all 1000 blocks to find all the star patterns.

I loved this book so much my husband immediately regretted getting it for me. The best part is that all measurements are for a 12 1/2 block, so no trying to math it just right. The book is three sections - applique, pieced and foundation pieced with an easy to use CD of the patterns. I know I will get a lot of use out of this!

Lots of blocks to explore with...I even found a Facebook group that uses this book for challenges...so that is fun. Only downside to book is that it does not have a descriptive index, it does have one by designer, but that is not very useful. I also wish it had more instruction on how to put the blocks together, but with the groups help, I am managing.

I love the book immensely. I give it 4 stars because it took a while to get used to how to match the block in the book with the info on the CD. I’m usually pretty quick with computers but this did take me a couple of days to get it set in my mind.

Easy to follow how to construct blocks

Some of the blocks are very complicated to make which is OK but not all the instructions are clear. Book arrived with the back cover torn.

What's that you ask? Instructions? What are those? Oh, you mean the cut 2 of this shape and this many of that shape. On the disc-takes forever to load. Numbering system is a total mess, it doesn't follow the book. So you basically have to guess which one of the files contains the pattern you want? Oh files? There's like 10 with several 'patterns' on them. You need to be able to print them ENLARGED also. Basically this is an IDEA book of different blocks. Hope you have an accuquilt system.

This book has a CD make sure you get the CD because that is where the patterns are located. the book itself has illustrations of the patterns. Lots of inspiration in those patterns. There are sections for applique, paper piecing and piecing. Just a great collection of patterns.

not as informative as i thought it would be i waned more patterns and information on how to do quilts that some like me could understand.

Instructions are clear. Blocks are pretty but most are advanced level was hoping for more to be beginner or intermediate

Excellent resource with instructions to complete 12 inch blocks. The only fault is in the designer index. My copy lists blocks by designer only if I want to actually go to that block, I found I need to add "2" pages to the page listed in the index. Example: Bonnie Hunter is listed for a block on page 111. I find it on page 113 instead of page 111. All other designers are also 2 pages beyond the actual page they are listed on. So, as long as I remember to add 2 pages to the page number listed in the index, I can find blocks by designer. It would be nice if blocks were also indexed by name too.

Wonderful collection of blocks through all types of preparing blocks. Easy to read and understand directions. Be sure to check it out today. A great book to add to your collection.

This would have been a delightful addition to my library except that the index is inaccurate. Also, both pages and blocks are numbered, you are left to figure out for yourself if the numbers in the index refer to block numbers or page numbers. And once you figure that out, the page numbers are off by two. The book is colorful and well illustrated and the blocks are beautiful. Because of the errors in the index, however, I would not trust any of the directions, without checking them for accuracy first. I have not looked at the accompanying PDFs on the disc for accuracy because I just purchased the book. I went to both the Quiltmaker home page and the Fons and Porter home page and could find no errata list, which I would have expected they would publish, since they surely have heard this by now. I was glad for the savings on Amazon and Prime, I would be very upset if I had paid the full retail cost of the book.

What I love: wide variety of blocks from close to 1000 people with a mix of applique, paper pieced, pieced and combination. Many of the blocks have info on the fabric and websites of the designer, so there is a wealth of resources. While the fabrics are no longer available, the designer might have something similar. Don't like: for those who bought quiltmaker's 100 books, this is a compilation so you won't find new blocks. If your computer does not have a CD drive, you won't be able to use the disk for the paper pieced patterns.

I loved the variety of quilt blocks that are in this book. Nearly half of them I look forward to making.

If you're a quilter you will get some ideas from this book. There are more ideas in here than you can possibly see on the internet.

I love this book. It contains lots of quilt block designs and an embroidery CD for an affordable price.

There are so many different blocks in this book. I spent 2 days going page-by-page and marking which ones I want to make. I think I marked 1/2 of the book, now I just need to find time to try each one of them. Clear illustrations and directions.

I like the book, but realized too late that 2/3 of the blocks are applique and paper piecing. I didn't see anything in the description that warned of this flaw.

This is a fabulous book - the best of the best! I read reviews regarding the problems coordinating the pattern with the CD...they must have proofed and reprinted because mine is exact. The book says the pattern is on page 113 of the CD...I find it on 113. How perfect that you can print a pattern for foundation piecing and go right to work. I sew right on the copy paper just use smaller stitches. Beautiful, full colored photographs - a great value all the way around.

I am delighted with the book - up to a point. The blocks are described beautifully with great pictures. However, I have not attempted to make anything from the patterns or used any templates accompanying the book. My opinion might be revised if they do not correspond with the block listing. The main problem is blocks and designer do not coincide anywhere in the book or its index. Page numbering is off totally with what each designer authored. A capable proof reader and editor might have eliminated this problem.

The book is nice but disk does not let you search for patterns very well. Its page by page, and extremely difficult to navigate. Cannot search by name of pattern. You would think that all the patterns are on disk for print, but you would be wrong. It is applique patterns only on disk. Most patterns are realistically for lap quilt only, and does not state that. My disk included patterns for a different pattern book... meaning some that should have been there were not either. Mix and match?? Intermediate to advanced pattern making skills necessary for this book!

Lots of blocks, nice organization. Could have less applique and better measurements included. Yes, I'd do it again!

Lacks directions on assembly of quilt

it has something for everyone. it is lovely and easy to understand.

For the Quilter that thinks they have it all. Several different disciplines and construction block designs for your creative quilter. Really, you will find block designs you have not before seen. Instructions are best suited for intermediate to advanced quilters though numerous blocks suitable for most any level of expertise. Whish it came in a ringed binding.

There are both pieced and applicaded patterns. I was expecting more pieced patterns.

I love this book! I love the variety of quilt blocks. I see Designs from people who's names I recognize and then many more I do not. I cannot wait to make the blocks and many, many quilts. What would make this book better is if the index matched the page numbers, and if blocks were listed by name as well as the designer.

So many blocks, so little time. If you are stuck and uninspired, this is the book for you. So many blocks to rev up your inspiration another notch. I am working on another quilt but when I get to the next blocks, I want to use something from this book. Even if you only do a block or two, it is worth it. If you find it on sale, don't think just get it. It will unlock your secret compartment of inspiration.

The quilt blocks in this extensive compilation from Quiltmaker's magazine are wonderful. But - and this is a significant criticism - the book lacks a quilt block index. With a thousand quilt blocks, an index of the quilt blocks by name is critical. The only index is an index of contributors and that index is off by two pages. A CD with patterns accompanies the book. One of the block photos in the book is wrong. I have not yet tried any of the block patterns, but I look forward to doing so in the future. It is a shame that sloppy editing detracts from the usefulness of this book.

There are so many beautiful designs, but nowhere in the description of this book did it inform me that it came with a CD to access patterns. I have 2 chromebooks, a MacBook Pro, a $2500 laptop for sketching and NONE OF THEM have a CD drive. It’s 2021…who even uses CDs anymore? I’m almost 40, I had a boom box and bought single cassette tapes when I was a teenager, do you want to put the instructions on one of those too?

This is the greatest quilt book I have ever purchased. It has designs I didn't know existed. I love this book. The CD enhances everything. This is the only quilt book you will ever need. Beautiful colorful pictures in a well made book.

excellent book, comes with full color photos, brings a CD with the molds of the images in the photos of the book, and comes with 1000 photos, the book weighs more than 4 pounds.

missing the CD with the patterns. Problem was resolved with second order. Outstanding service from the customer service group Kudos. Now working through the errata issues but the quality of some of the patterns makes it worth it. Good price.

It's a great book to get inspiration but wow are there are lot of errors! There are pictures that don't match the patterns, the index is a total mess. You you can only search by designer name, not block name. I don't know what the editors were doing when they were putting this book together but they should really be ashamed of themselves for doing this book such a disservice and making it 10x more complex to navigate then it should be.

I have been collecting the Quiltmakers 100 blocks magazines and have missed obtaining copies of some of the earlier issues. The 1,000 blocks incorporates all of the blocks from the first 10 volumes of Quiltermakers 100 blocks. It is an outstanding resource for new block patterns and a wonderful tool for quilting teachers.

This book is packed full of easy yet beautiful quilt blocks!

Although I haven't had the time to actually make anything from this book yet, I love that there are so many choices for different techniques and skill levels.

I really like the block design and pattern in the book. What I don't like is that there is no detailed descriptions and "how to" in the book. It always refers to the CD rom and there I see a problem. Most new laptops don't have CD rom drives anymore and there is no reference where the files could be downloaded from. Secondly, I wanted to look up the "stitch and flip" reference in the Technique section referred to in the book. Guess what, there is no "Stitch ad flip" reference anywhere on the CD. Sadly, I think what the terrific patterns promise, the instructions lack in substance.

Excellent book. Well written. Good quality pictures. My wife loves it. As it is a reference book, I wish there was a hardcover version but I knew it was paperback going in.

Nice color and printing, but frustrating to use. While skimming through this book, I saw a peony block I liked. When I tried to find it later, I could not, because there is no index for the blocks. There is an index for the designers, but I could not remember who designed the block I liked. I had to look through the whole book again - twice - to find the block I wanted. A big, frustrating waste of time. If you buy this book, I recommend that you get some old-fashioned paper bookmarks and put them in the book next to the blocks you might be interested in making.

This could have been one of the best books on quilt blocks, but there are SO many errors in the book. The index is totally off, wrong instructions for a lot of the blocks....My conclusion is that no one proof read it before it was published....

Unfortunately this book needs to be revised or something. There are errors throughout, blocks that don't match up with directions, etc. It's really a lovely book minus the errors.

There a ton of blocks in this book, but alas, you need to be expert enough to figure out how to make and use them by yourself, UNLESS, you have CD ROM access... I am guessing the publisher thinks all quilters live in the past, a woefully wrong assumption. This was a gift, otherwise I would have returned it.

I've had this book for a few years now. I have made dozens of the blocks (mostly piecing.) I would recommend it to anyone who likes to make blocks and sampler quilts. The CD is only templates for the paper-piecing and applique shapes, so if you don't have a CD drive, you can still make half the blocks. And you can take the CD to any office supply store to have them put the templates on a flash drive for you for only a few bucks. I haven't made every block in the book, but I haven't found any errors in the blocks I have made. I love this book. I have purchased several to give to friends as a gift.

I love this book. Great ideas for fun blocks. My only criticism at this point is when you go to print the pattern from the cd, it often will instruct you to enlarge by 200%. The cd should have some built in software that will print the enlarged pattern in tile format so you can easily tape the pieces together to get a full pattern. My version of adobe doesn’t allow that. Very frustrating. That’s why I gave it four stars instead of five. Have not experienced the page numbers being off as I am working from the cd. Also, I marked my favorites with sticky notes so I could find them again later.

Good Book!

Nicely presented

PROS: Pretty much any block under the sun can be found in this book. The pictures are inspirational and the book is organized by type with colored "tabs" on the side of the pages for easy searching. There are a number of layouts and measurements at the back of the book to help you piece together various sizes of quilts (baby, twin, queen, king). CONS: The measurements are off...on almost every square. I meticulously measure each and every time I cut and I sew with a 1/4" foot. My lines are true as are my measurements. But the finished block vary from 10x11 or other measurements which fall fall short from the standard 12 1/2 x 12 1/2. I have had to improvise and add borders or make other modifications to my blocks in order to make them the required and standard size. If the blocks (using the measurement in the book) are going to be other than the standard 12 1/2 x 12 1/2 then the editors needed to put the finished size in each block pattern. I don't want to spend my time improvising my blocks from a book that purports to be a pattern book. I want to spend time quilting.

My sisters and I are in this book. Understandably I love it. More to the point, there are 1000 blocks. Think of all the quilts you can make and all the measurements are done for you. Congratulations Quiltmaker Magazine and all those who participated..

What an amazing book! I got this for my mom who is a quilter. I found myself going through the book and tagging the pages that I loved and wanted in my next quilt. So many cool options to choose from. It truly is my moms favorite quilt book of ideas.

I just purchased this book and do not find any of the errors that have been described. Perhaps corrections were made to the book and re-released. I wanted to share this information so that the buyer can buy this book with confidence. It is a wonderful book.

This book is a quilter's dream! There are so many blocks to choose from, you will be busy for years!

While the blocks in this book are beautiful, the directions are sorely lacking. Each block is limited to half of a page, with the directions consisting of a diagram and a few sentences. I would not recommend this for beginning quilters as there isn't enough detail to the directions for success. I'm an experienced quilter, have made 4 of the blocks, and none of them has gone smoothly so far. One block has directions that don't pertain to that block. Very disappointed.

I don't know how anyone can give this error filled book a 5, and anything above a 3 is still pushing it. I was constantly flipping pages to the blocks I was trying to make because the index is completely off by two pages. And then after I figured out the problem the measurements were off and after following the directions to the letter my block resembled nothing close to the picture. I tried blocks 515, 516 and just to make sure 556. So glad I didn't waste money on this book, it was a library loan.

This book is so beautifully printed and full of wonderful block ideas however from the first foundational piece instructions in the beginning of the book, there are measurement errors that cause a waste of fabric and time! The book is pretty, but useless really. It's very unfortunate and I'm sure the publisher #Interweave.com realized that publishing corrections for this book would probably result in an entirely separate book itself...too bad. Do not purchase.

I've been wanting to get this for some time now, and am absolutely pleased with what I see in the book. So many ideas! The blocks are rather large, but that can be adjusted.

Perfect diagrams, lots of patterns, lots of tips. Glad I purchased.

Love having so many patterns in one place. Worth the price for quilters.

A wonderful extensive guide which covers a variety of block-making ideas including applique, foundation-pieced, mixed techniques and pieced. It also features settings and yardages for turning your blocks into adorable tablerunners, wall hanging and beautiful quilts. I particularly like the PDF index section on the enclosed CD with easy reference to the PDF templates. The PDF's are clearly labelled as are the individual "cut outs" all print out well. For easy reference I've printed out the 5 index with large type so that when I browse through the book I can make my notes accordingly. This book is geared to quilters of intermediate skill level.

Book has 1,000 quilt block patterns, some include layouts for full blankets. It has foundation, paper, mixed, and pieced blocks. There is a CD which lets you print off the paper and foundation pieces in greater detail. Has a lot of unique block ideas. I tend to do more piece quilting than the others so could only use part of the book, however there were still quite a few to choose from even with that.

I was deceived that the CD pocket was ripped out of book. This is a very nice book with some HST patterns but mostly appliqués. If anyone has the CD for sale, let me know. The seller was great and agreed to reimburse the purchase

I'm using the techniques in this great book in more than one quilt I have on the go! Very comprehensive coverage of various block-making methods & helpful suggestions for settings. The CD with PDF templates is a bonus!

Quilters like to expand their abilities all the time. I male smaller quilts to donate to the Children’s hospital so like to make a variety of designs for the children.

Never need another quilt mag or block book again in my life.
