Psych's Guide to Crime Fighting for the Totally Unqualified

I bought this as a gift for my daughter, who loves the show for which the book was modeled after. It’s written in the voice of the main character of Psych, and if you like his humor, you’ll like the book. It’s a novelty obviously, but still a fun read. She read a few chapters to me while we were on a road trip and it really helped pass the time. I should note, my daughter is 13... some of the content might be too adult for younger readers.

Anything with Shawn and Gus is an immediate 5 Stars. This dynamic duo can do anything and make me laugh. I'm not finished with "the Guide", but enjoying them as much as ever. I wish they'd continue the show forever, even if JR is hot on his own show right now. I miss all of them. Spoiler Alert, this is NOT the guide you want to invest in to begin your own detective agency.

It’s written from the character of Shawn, which is pretty funny, but it quickly loses its novelty. In the immortal words of Gus “Sillypants” Jackson, this book can “Suuuuck iiiiiiit”

This is pretty much what I expected. It's just a fun thing to have, and my wife and I pretty much the biggest Psych fans there are. The book pulls from actual episodes and is just kind of a interesting thing to keep around...especially for Psych fans.

Simple: If you like Psych, you will like this book. I read the whole thing in the voice of the characters. It reads exactly as you imagine it would. It has made me laugh out loud numerous times and will continue to do so.

Become a fake detective (the psychic part, fake or not, is up to you) just by reading Psych’s Guide to Crime Fighting for the Totally Unqualifiedby Shawn Spencer with Burton Guster (who don’t actually exist outside of a TV show). Actually, you only have to read page 1 to become a detective because Shawn says so. Topics include setting up shop, picking your sidekick (who is definitely not a partner), working with cops and coroners of all kinds, and wrapping up your case with an awesome breakdown. There are recipes by Harry Spencer (bath salts) and Mr. Yang (twice baked potatoes) and magazine articles about/by such annoyances as Declan Rand and Cameron Luntz and an illuminating interview with Chief Vick and her sister, Commander Dunlap. Sprinkled throughout are very important quizzes (you must pass to be a detective… or not since you became a detective on page 1) and thumbprint doodles from the creative brain (and thumb) of Juliet O’Hara. This book is, as one would expect, hilarious. A must read for Psychos and fans of delicious flavor.

This is for any fan of the show Psych. My husband watches it incessantly and this was the perfect gift for Xmas. It has lots of fun facts and explains a lot about all the references that are made in the show. If you've never watched Psych, I suggest you do!

It's a hilarious book! If you are a fan of Psych, then this is the book for you. It has all of Shawn's charm, with some great arguments between Shawn and Gus, Shawn and Juliet, and even Shawn and Lassiter in the footnotes. It sometimes gets a bit dull, because there is only so much Psych you can fit into 200+ pages (some feels like filler) but other than that, would highly recommend!

This was given as a gift; it brought hours of entertainment and laughter to the recipient. It has black and white pictures, drawings and tables to go along with Shawn's silly stories and "advice." A think it is a must have for any fan of Psych.

If you are sad that Psych is over and didn't get the hype that other shows got, buy this book! If you are like me, you don't know anyone else that has seen the show, so you can't make references to it all the time. This book let me continue to enjoy the show even when I couldn't watch it anymore. It has very similar humor, and it makes you think about re-binge watching the show!

I am a HUGE Psych fan but the book was REALLY hard to read through. It’s suposed to be psych-ish which we know is all over the place but it missed the mark in my mind.

If your a fan of the series, and can read, this book is for you. It's much longer than I would have expected from Shawn Spencer, but it is good from start to finish. I read the entire book in the characters voices. Sure wish they would bring back the show, but this helps.

It's always a little scary when you encounter a new facet of a show or performer you like (a novel written by a comedian, music performed by an actor), and I was afraid that this book might fail to meet the high standards for whimsy and snark set by Psych the Show. I loved the show psych, ive seen all the seasons MANY times over. As much as this isn't a typical novel type book, it has HILARIOUS excerpts in it, and is typical to psych humor. If you are a fan of psych, this is a definite pick up

This book was hilarious. If you've seen the show enough, reading this is just like watching since the dialogue is from the perspective of the show's characters. I am not a dedicated reader but I read this in three days!

This book is both humorous and fun. Written from Shawn's point of view, it contains cute little asides and plenty of funny graphs, maps, drawings, and more, as if we're getting a look directly into Shawn's messy little head. :D It's cute and perfect for avid Psych fans (like me).

Its publish date is older than I expected it to be. It also takes a minute to get into "Shawn"s voice. Did Roday and Dule' write it?

I am excited to start the book and I’m sure the content will be good however just opening the book and flipping gently through the first few pages the book is falling apart and the binding is very cheap. 😢

I bought if for my 15 year old son for Christmas because he is a huge Psych fan, regularly re-watching old episodes. He loves it and can't put it down. The only annoying thing is that now he is possessed by it and seems compelled to share the contents of it with all unsuspecting family members within earshot of him. A small price to pay for an impulse shopping purchase, which he clearly loves.

Bought 2 very funny reads

I was already laughing and reminiscing by just reading the front and back cover! The sense of humor is so similar to the writing in the actually TV show. You feel like Shawn is the one that actually wrote the book.

This book did not disappoint. If you are a Psych fan, you will enjoy this book. As you read the book, you are transported to the tv show and imagining Shawn, Gus and the whole cast speaking as the book is written.

Not a novel style book, the excerpts are ok. Good gift for a die hard Psych fan.

This will indeed do. When is Tom Selleck or Donald Bellasario going to release the tie-in book that is constantly mentioned in Magnum PI? At this point NEVER. So if you gotta be a private detective in this day and age, and those Raymond Chandler books are outdated as heck, you have to read this Psych book. It's full of lots of pictures and easy to follow guides, and you'll have a helluva fun time poking through Spencer's skittles of wisdom. My only gripe is that it's in black and white, especially when compared to the Parks and Recreation book which offered the same amount of content at the same price AND it's in color. Anyway, I'm having a blast.

A Psych lover's dream come true. I have my new favorite bathroom book. Only problem, though, is that I have been spending WAY too much time on the throne reading it.

We do indeed have a "psycho" in the house who loves this show. And he has thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, as can be noted from the constant giggles heard while reading. The book appears to have translated the wit and humor of the show quite well, into print.

Book was bought as a gift for a family member who is a fan, the book was bigger than expected and full of content was just disappointed that the book was supposedly new but was slightly bent and dirty. But I don't think she will mind.

I purchased this as a gift for my husband. We both enjoy Psych on television and since he is in law enforcement, I thought it would make a nice gift for him. We both have enjoyed it, though! It is well-written and interesting and entertaining.

If you love psych, this book is perfect!!! It's that beautifully zany humor and quirkiness that you see on your screen but in a book! When they mentioned it on an episode my boyfriend needed to see if it was true... and it is! Enjoy!

This book is wonderful, for anyone who likes psych obviously. It is completely written by Shawn Spencer and his tone is true to his TV one and just as funny. There are also footnotes and other segments written by Gus, Jules, Lassiter, and Henry. If you love Psych and everything about it, there is absolutely no way that you're going to not like this crime fighting book.

My teenage kids LOVE this show. We ordered the book and are not disappointed. My kids sit on the couch and laugh to themselves as they read. This is a fun book and i think yawl would enjoy it.

Have to know the show and many of its episodes to understand all the references. Pretty funny.

First off, I can't believe this book is so cheap. This is a big book. Yes, the type is big but it's heftier than some textbooks. Second, this is pretty quality writing. I know there are Psych novels out there that are underwhelming, but whoever wrote this must be involved with the show or is intimately familiar with it. I love that the book never 'breaks character'. The whole time you are made to assume that it is written by Shawn and Gus. Even the copyright says Shawn Spencer. I've only made it through a few chapters, but this is some light reading. I'm sure you could barrel your way through if you insisted, but I like going through the chapters at my own leisure. This isn't prose fiction, so it's not exactly a page-turner. Overall, you're going to have to be a fan of the show to read this. Having the characters' voices in your head as you read is essential. Even better, though, is that it's actual quite metafictional. It's a book that knows it's a book. What a wonderful experiment by whoever was behind this and I hope we get more.

I read it in one sitting driving from Detroit, MI to St. Louis, MO Easter weekend... laughed my butt off! CLEVERLY WRITTEN... with the interaction in the footnotes, it was like watching them talk among themselves on the show!

Very much written in Shawn's voice and is just a clever and funny as the show. Most of the book I could picture being said on the show. If you like the show, you will like the book. Four stars because... there are things that work better in the show than they do on the page. Or, for me, more noticeable on the page. I honestly feel like most of it could be taken work from word from the script. But if you read it, it isn't as funny as it is when James Roday/Dule Hill act it. So, hence the 4 stars

Cause if so, Shawn has some good info for ya. The book is a fun read and a good way to get a Psych fix while waiting for the next season to come around. Everything is in character and not too hard to believe Shawn would put something like this out there.

Reading this book made me laugh harder than I have ever laughed while reading a book. The spirit of Shawn is strong with this book. It's like he's talking right next to you. The obscure 80's references are everywhere and the footnotes are heavy with other characters from the show arguing with Shawn. It's just pure gold. If you're a fan of Psych, this book is a must-have. If you have never watched Psych and have no idea what to expect from something like this, just understand that this book was intended as a joke and trust me, you'll be laughing your butt off after you read the first few pages. I highly recommend this book to anyone who could use a good chuckle (I'm looking at you, Lassie).

"Psych's Guide to Crime Fighting for the Totally Unqualified" is a must read for any "Psych" fan. Some if the highlights are Shawn's take on tax deductions, Woody's tips on performing an autopsy, and advice from Gus on what foods are appropriate to eat at a crime scene. There are also references to past characters on "Psych" scattered throughout the book. Shawn's chastising of most of the men Juliet has ever been involved with is particularly entertaining. The footnotes are equally comical, and mostly consist of bickering between Shawn/Gus or Shawn/Juliet. There are several contributions in the book from Juliet and Gus. Lassiter, McNab, and Shawn's father also give their inputs. Lastly, it would not be a true "Psych" book if there were not 80s references, pop culture, and nicknames on almost every single page. And of course, an intro from Curt Smith. Ultimately, it's very entertaining. I will read it again and share it with my family of Psych-Os.

Hilarious book!

I loved this book, the humor, the 80's references, the fighting between Shawn and Gus. It was perfection. I enjoyed each chapter and even the mini pop quizzes at the end. If you like Psych and you love Shawn and Gus I say buy this book.

As a huge fan of the show, anything that brings more of that whimsical irreverence into my life is more than welcome. And this tome delivers in spades. Just reading a few pages made me queue up episode 1 on Netflix for a new bingewatching session.

Most of these types of books are just tiny cash ins with a licensed TV show.. This one is nearly 300 pages with writing that seems like the show's writers themselves were writing the dialogue and advice from the characters. If you liked watching the show at all, this is money well spent.
