Prince: A Private View

If you're reading this the answer is YES...this is the book you want to own. I knew the photos would be stunning. What I didn't expect was Afshin's poignant, beautifully written memories of Prince. I'll cherish these as much as his photos because together they reveal Prince...the man. And that's a beautiful portrait. In a few photos of Prince and Manuela in unguarded moments, Afshin captures Prince's tenderness. And yet, these shots are never voyeuristic. I get a sense of being invited in, as Prince clearly invited Afshin in. Then there are the iconic shots and private party montages! Could we ask for more? Yes - I still love books and this one is a work of art...the choice and quality of the photos, the layout, and the book jacket with it's lovely sheen and embossed print. And then there's the photo of Prince on the back jacket. There could not have been a more perfect choice...so bittersweet. It gets me every single time I see it...a fond farewell. In the intro Afshin says he wanted to "honor the memory of a man who gave his heart and soul to so many people". He's accomplished that and so much more. Thank you, Afshin.

The One Nite Alone time period from roughly 2001-2003 is my favorite time period from Prince. My favorite albums that go #1 and #2 for me are One Nite Alone Piano and Voice and The Rainbow Children. I have spent COUNTLESS HOURS and coins collecting every single artifact from this time period…like thousands of dollars of buying vinyl, art, and media, and dozens upon dozens of boots from this time. So you can imagine my EXTREME EXCITEMENT knowing that Afshin Shahidi was the official photographer of this time period and knowing he was putting out a book. This was MY BOOK that I pre-ordered as soon as it was announced! I even spent a good chunk of money on his Prince in Hawaii book as well because it was fringe my time period. I was avoiding spoilers left and right that were being posted to social media. I wanted my experience to be a shock with each turn of the page…an emotional experience….a cathartic experience…a “Princely” experience. NO SPOILERS I WANT TO HAVE REACTIONS WITH EACH TURN OF THE PAGE! I had plans…for 8 months…I would create environment, candles, incense from Salish Winds, his preferred incense place, wine, my favorite album One Nite Alone playing in the background…Salish winds essential oils in my bath even. THIS WAS ABOUT TO BE A TRUE PRINCE EXPERIENCE. I read the book by candlelight. I cannot tell you how much of a special experience this was. I laughed….I didn’t cry…but what I felt the most was MOTIVATION. I’d had a rough day at work, and was actually considering waiting until I had a less stressful day so I could be fully present in this experience I’d planned for 8 months, but I’m glad I just did it. I jokingly call Prince my “Fairy God Boyfriend” or my “Professor” but this book…solidified him as my Professor. Strong feelings of “I am not doing enough” and “it’s 100% okay to have high standards of performance and not feel bad about that” and “just because ‘society’ has a lower bar of acceptability…and you know your own bar is higher than that, doesn’t mean you can relax. Perform at YOUR level of standard no matter what.” Where before I was nervous about this book because it covered my favorite era and of course Prince is beautiful…it wasn’t about that at all…for me it was a kick in the butt to get busy..not living, but WORKING. He spent his whole life WORKING without compromise…."Get on the boat" or get left. Having that kind of work ethic is okay. Never be ashamed about that. WORK. I am soooo soooo motivated now….you only get one life. You only get one first time….so make the most of it. Never skimp on opportunities to live. Always “do the most”. You deserve nothing less that that…and you should never expect anything less than the best. Thank you Afshin for conveying this as a witness to his genius. And thank you Professor Nelson, for providing this example. Are YOU willing to do the work?

For the last 18 months it’s been hard for a rabid Prince fan like me to find joy, and when I ordered “Prince: A Private View” I knew I’d been in for a treat (Afshin Shahidi is a top-notch photographer who did amazing work with Prince, as we see in the book). There’s no question about it: this book has some of the most stellar photography I’ve seen. Absolutely stunning, and blows all those other post-Prince photography books away. Reading “Prince: A Private View” sent me to Prince’s heaven, with each page bringing me back to memories of tours, concerts, and music. It was good to feel the giddy-obsession I once had of Prince without breaking down in tears, but there’s always “Man, wish he were here to see this.” If you’re looking for that perfect book that embodies who Prince truly was, this is it.

I was "curious" to read this book as I had, myself, worked with Prince for over 20 years (our years did not overlap). What Afshin has done in addition to absolutely beautiful photographs (I'm an avid amateur photographer myself) is capture Prince in a way that simply hasn't been done. It was obvious that Prince was VERY comfortable with Afshin and, therefore, showed sides of himself that few saw - especially the playful Prince. In addition to the photographs (I LOVED the moody one taken on a back street in Panama, Afshin has woven a story showing the trust and friendship that developed between them. A wonderful book that deserves to be in ANY Prince fan's library -- in fact, anyone who enjoys celebrity photography should also buy this as the photography (not to sound redundant) is absolutely marvelous.

This is not the first book on Prince that I have purchased, but it IS the only one I sat and went through, cover to cover. I'm a HUGE Prince fan from day one and won't hesitate to criticize when it comes to him. The pictures in this book are amazing, but what I really enjoyed was the stories Afshin tells throughout the book. If you are an open and receptive person, you can feel the love and respect Afshin has for Prince. But even of you're not, this book is a must have for any Prince fan. I am so hoping Afshin does not only The B-Sides, but many books in the future. I know he has enough pics and definitely enough memories. The images of Prince are stunning! This is a fantastic, intimate collection of photographs taken by Afshin Shahidi. Over the pages, you will see Shahidi's progress from fledgling photographer to professional. You will also read about his journey with Prince. These days, it is rare that a super famous artist sees the potential in someone, and then offers that person the opportunity that Prince provided for Shahidi. If you were grieving about Prince's passing, this book is definitely a healer. Well done, and I am so glad that I have a copy! That said, I, like some of the other reviewers, received a damaged copy. The corner spine of the book is bent, and their are ink spots and rippling pages throughout the book -- there is even an ink spot on one of the images that is on Prince's nose. Annoying and disappointing. I am really surprised at this poor quality coming out of St. Martin's Press.

I saw some of these photos last year when AMPAS gave a special showing of Purple Rain in LA. They filled the theater lobby with photos of Prince, all by Afshin Shahidi, we had never seen any of the photos before. We were told a book would coming out with the photos, waited for over a year, and it was worth it

I could never be as articulate as the other reviews about the beauty of this book or it’s subject. But this is a beautiful collection of the beautiful one💜 deeply thoughtful and loving text, it is simply a book to have to be mezmerized by his eyes alone. Prince’s Beautiful face and soul were art carved by god, we will never see another one like him.

A deliciously intimate glimpse into Prince's life, told through the lens and heart of his trusted friend. The photographer/author enables us to not just wish we were there, but to feel like we WERE there; at the concerts, the parties, the back alleys in foreign countries, and beyond... Learning about the stories behind the pictures is what makes this book so unique. The author also weaves in his own dreams, which adds even more color to the vibrant journey we are privileged to take. Being such a huge fan of Prince, I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't leave me feeling sad, but actually brought some closure and peace to the sudden loss of this icon and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer. There are so many dynamic photos in the 230+ page book, it's difficult to pick a favorite. But, the image of Prince with Tom Petty is definitely worth the modest purchase price of Prince: A Private View. I'm so grateful to have found the perfect gift for anyone who appreciates stellar photography, music and prose!

This is a really nice book amazing pictures and wonderful stories. And I'd give it a 5 star rating IF the manufacturer had done a better job. Many of the photos look like the ink was too wet for the paper almost remind me if if you had krinted it on a printer at home. Overall worth it but such a shame such a beautiful effort is marred by something so preventable.

Afshin Shahidi's work is befitting homage to a beautiful soul who thrived with excellence. Each photo tells an intimate and touching story that helps fams get a glimpse of Prince, the person. Having some context and backstory is delightful. There is the right mix of private and public persona. This is a must-have for any fan. The book is a work of art that captures the essence of an immensely creative soul. There are tons of photos to enjoy and experience. The excellence leaves you wanting more. Thank you, Afshin for putting much care into honoring Prince and for giving us A-Private-View.

This book is absolutely lovely. I only had the opportunity to skim over it today but the photos are beautiful, it's elegant and the dust jacket is gorgeous and there is a lot of narrative that I did not expect. For those reviews that said it is small, it measures almost 8"x 9.5" and is 235 pages. It would make a wonderful inexpensive gift for a Prince fan.

Arrived in perfect condition. I've put it away for now. Can't bear to see the photos just yet. I know I'll end up crying. So thrilled to have this beautiful book full of his life in pictures. Was lucky enough to land an ink artwork by a friend just after his death and the two are all I have now. Love him and his music and miss him so!

Incredible compilation of photos and the sh6ort stories made me appreciate and love the author/photographer just as much as Prince. What a nice way to read about someone such as this star because he was truly a star. It was positive with no negativity and thats much appreciated. Good job on the whole thing!

AwESOME book and read from cover to cover. This book was written by Prince's photographer. He tells us how special of a person he really was and how talented and kind he was. Most of what I read, I never knew. I loved his music. It is sad that he left this life so young!

This book is such a gift to all of the world who loved Prince. The photographs are just breathtaking. And the stories and memories that go along with the photos just bring them to life even more. This book is a must have for anyone who wants a glimpse of both staged and candid photos of Prince Rogers Nelson. The ones where he was caught off guard to me are the most priceless. The photos he wasn't expecting. Those show the vulnerable side of this musical genius.

This book gives insight into Prince's personality and offers interesting pictures of moments in his life. These pictures show Prince in both private and performance moments. It is a celebration of his talent. Any fan of Prince's music will appreciate this book!

It's my mistake that I didn't read the description this book is mostly photographs, I was hoping for a biography I'll keep the book, it is a nice book, with some great pictures in it.

This photo book of the late, great Prince is awesome! Most photos are of him in the later years of his life. This book is one of the best I've seen and reasonably priced, also.

Very nice book. So many gorgeous pictures of Prince. He was very photogenic. Great addition to my Prince book collection. I hope that the author will produce more Prince books like this. The item was delivered in the condition as promised,

The photos speak for themselves... Interesting that I was told the book was being pulled due to defects but it's still here and I can't get a descent copy!

This is one of the most significant books to be released regarding Prince. If you are an avid member of the Prince community or just a casual Prince fan (is there such a thing?) this book is a must-have. It provides an intimate behind-the-scenes glimpse of the icon and is a refreshing, bittersweet reminder of the human behind the legend. Many thanks to Afshin Shahidi for sharing these special moments with the world. This is a perfect tribute to how Prince will be lovingly remembered by those who had the honor of knowing the man behind the music.

Disclaimer: I'm a huge Prince fan, so my review is affected by that fact. As a fan, I loved this book. Viewing these many photos and reading Mr. Shahidi's recollections of them was pure joy. Recommended to any true Prince fans.

Not much else as far as content goes.... lots of pictures, some that were hard to even make out, I guess that's 'art'. I love Prince and he looks good in just about any picture, but this had mostly pictures and not much else.

Afshin is so wonderful to share with all of us these never before seen photos of Prince. The book is bigger than I expected and it has been a thrill to see these photos. I look forward to sitting down and reading all the text and I thank you Ashfin for this. After all these years to see new photos of our beloved Prince means more than you know.

Thank you. You captured Prince better than anyone. In your pictures, I saw his humanity, his heart, his soul, his spirit, his essence. You could feel your love and heartbreak with every page turn. And it was obvious Prince loved you as well. Thank you for being a friend to him. You are as much of a gem of a man as he is. Don't listen to the naysayers, this was truly a labor of love. I know you won't ever have closure or come to terms with his death, but please know you are doing him justice, keeping his legacy alive and spreading his love through these pages to his fans.

I love this book. The photos are great and the stories are even better. You can feel the admiration and respect that the author feels for the subject. He takes us around the world and invites us not only backstage but side stage, in the car, on the bus and even in church! Its almost like I was on tour with Prince! I haven’t finished it yet because I want to savor every story.

I cried a little when I read the introduction about Afshin getting his start with Prince, what a lovely story. The book is a good read and the pictures are of course beautiful, even the "artsy" ones :). Thank you for taking us on your life journey and sharing your treasured experiences with us. I'm still in awe of this beautiful creation. Once I read the Introduction by Afshin, I knew that I was in for an emotional ride. With each turn of the page, and reading his personal thoughts once how he met "The Artist" and how the two of them in turn became friends. Man, there is so much more that I want to say, but I'm still processing. The images are brilliant and artistic. I totally love the photojournalist format... that is life right? It isn't always posed. But even those there were planned, look so relaxed and at ease. Afshin, thank you for sharing your view of our love, your friend. I really appreciate your allowing me to see this personal side, and to experience the man, who was the greatest artist in my lifetime. Thank you! Lenise!

Afshin, Afshin, Afshin!!!!!!! You have done an exceptional job with this book. Prince: A Private View is simply sublime. Words can't express how wonderful it is to experience this. I am just awed, just awed!!!!!! The photos are great but the story that accompanied the photos are gems. It's just nice to read about my hero.

This book is a beautiful book for ANY Prince fan. The stories are wonderfully written and shows a side of Prince that you don't normally see. You will in reading this book laugh and cry at the same time. The photos are just stunning and knowing the stories behind some of the pictures that you may have seen over the years you have a deeper love for the man not just in the picture but the man BEHIND the picture. Its definitely a book that any Prince fan should have for the stories alone are worth the price you pay for the book. Afshin Shahidi is sweet man THANK YOU for sharing your beautiful pictures and stories with us through this book. Absolutely beautiful pictures of one of the greatest artists in our lifetime. Afshin Shahidi is an amazing artist who captures him perfectly. A must for Prince fans or anyone who appreciates great music photography.

The delivery was terrible. Carrier threw it onto the porch, instead of walking the three steps up and three steps over to set it near the door. The book is damaged, therefore and it was purchased as a gift. Otherwise the book, itself is beautiful.

Being an avid fan of Prince, the book gave an intimate look at his life. I appreciated the moments shared and even shed a tear.

If you love His Royal Badness, you will love this book. Great pics and wonderful memories recorded with most of them. Only drawback, covers his years with Manuela & ends when he started up with Ta'mar, only bout ten of his illustrious years. It's a must have for The Purple Army. RIP Beautiful One.

Of all the Prince photographers Afshin Shahidi is my favorite because his images capture much more than Prince as a superstar. He manages to capture Prince's humanity, vulnerability and range of emotions. I highly recommend this book.

This is a must have book for anyone who is into Prince. Afshin is very respectful to Prince in both is pictures and his stories. His storytelling makes you smile and say yeah I can see P doing that! I also love how Afshin shares dreams throughout the book. If you have the chance to go to a book signing, by all means go!! Hearing the stories first hand while told with such passion will make you smile. It has been a long emotional journey since Prince left us, A Private View gives you something to hold on to.

Purchased this as a gift for my sister who has been a fan of Prince since he came out in the late 70s and she was overjoyed to receive this book. I flipped through a few pages myself and there are some absolutely amazing photos of him in here. Awesome job by the photographer, Afshin Shahidi!!

Afshin you really out did yourself with this book. I enjoyed the stories that you tell with the photos. The pictures are so crisp and vivid. The clarity in Prince's face and hands is outstanding! There were fingerprints all over the book to the extent that the book looked used. Not happy.

Not many people had access to the personal life of our greatest rock star. Afshin Shahidi pulls back the curtain (respectfully) and shows us facets of Prince that few saw....and no one else saw it all. Highly recommended!

If you are a true Prince fan you need this book. The book includes pictures that let you see him in his most relaxed state, something we rarely saw. And the stories that accompany each picture are truly heartfelt. You can tell Afshin Shahidi was not only a fan but a true friend to the artist.

Amazing body of work. Afshin not only captured Prince doing what he loves most, performing live in concert. After all Prince is music! He captured him in his quiet moments as well as when he was feeling comfortable and free. My most favorite thing about this book are the stories behind the photos. Afshin's book is breathtaking. It truly does capture a private view of a man who was somehow very private while also being a walking-talking-singing-guitar-godding human work of art. So many of the photos he selected made my heart fly out of my body and I am so grateful for all of the personal stories Afshin included. He's an excellent documentarian, and it sounds to me like he's a wonderful friend. I'm so glad they found each other, and we got the book.

This book is amazing. Afshin captures a side of Prince in a way I haven't seen before. The feel is very intimate and personal and it's like you have a backstage pass to his most precious moments. I highly recommend this book.

A glorious read and history in pictures. Some moments left me in tears. A must for any Prince collector. We shall miss him always.

The book is beautiful!!! The only thing is the paper cover was damaged and I collect Prince anything.

Another beautiful photo book of Prince to add to my collection. Though it's certainly not a competition and comparison isn't necessary, some people have indicated a preference for this book over Steve Parke's but I prefer Steve's if I had to choose only one - the size (wish it were bigger), quality of Afshin's book and paper itself (thin with subtle ripples on every page even though it was packaged perfectly and was not damaged) and photos aren't as good in my opinion. I also prefer Steve's style of writing and his photos are drop-dead, jaw-dropping gorgeous and reflect not only Prince's outer beauty but his deep inner beauty and spirituality. To give proper credit to Afshin, his stories are also a treasure and Afshin obviously had a close relationship with Prince, loved him and vice versa. I think any serious follower of Prince should have both books as they also cover different time periods (Steve 90's, Afshin 00's). Thanks to both authors for sharing their relationship and photos with us and for helping to keep our beloved Prince alive. It brings me such joy to learn more and see more of the intimate side of Prince, whom I will love and be inspired by forever.

Although the photos are very cool, I am disappointed in the quality of the pages/paper of the copy I received. The paper has ripples in it. Has anyone else noticed this? The paper used for printing does not seem very high-quality overall. I find this disappointing for a photo book. Curious as to whether others have noticed this? I'm going to try and get a new copy to see if it is better.

Afshin Shahidi gives us a rare glimpse into the incredibly gifted soul that is Prince. The stories he tells with each photo really bring us close to the experience and show a real love for his friend. Of course the never before seen pics are wonderful and we can only hope for a part 2. Thank you for this beautiful book.

This is a must have book. I was overwhelmed with every emotion looking through the many unseen pictures. I'm so envious of Shahidi's time photographing such a legend especially around the Musicology time - performing and just out and about. Like Steve Parke's book the stories scattered throughout are of equal weight. The candid photographs of Prince and of him performing are my favourites - some are really amazing shots. RIP Prince.

Since Prince's passing, I've brought many magazines and several books, all of which I just glanced through the pictures. This book grabbed a hold of me and didn't let go, from beginning to end, the captions of the pictures brought me into that experience. The dreams mesmerized me. When I was done, I didn't want to be. Thank you Mr. Shahidi for this masterpiece, I've gained a more personal perspective of Mr. Nelson the man.💜💜💜

This is a beautifully written and shot book. However, I bought this as a gift for a diehard Prince fan, and it was delivered with the cover folded incorrectly leaving a HUGE crease right down the center of the cover. Better quality control when shipping PLEASE.

Less written about the photographer and more about Prince. Disappointing photos.

Each photograph speaks and the thoughts shared in the dreams speaks. How Afshin could put this together so soon after was an attribute to their personal and professional relationship. As a lover of photography, I am very happy to own this book. Thank you for sharing with us Afshim.

I bought this as a birthday present for my mom. The cover was a bit dirty for the book to be “new” but besides that the condition was good.

Great book, great purchase. It was a gift to my daughter since we are both Prince fans. So many great candid photos, the only fault is that a single book can not totally illustrate a fantastic person’s life! I will be getting a second book for myself!!!!!!

The photos were nice but the book would have been so much better if it were slightly bigger. I collect photo books/coffee table books and this has to be the smallest I've ever seen. I guess it saved the publisher/photographer a few coins reducing the size of the book and photos.
