Play It Loud celebrates the musical instruments that gave rock and roll its signature sound—from Louis Jordan’s alto saxophone and John Lennon’s Rickenbacker to the drum set owned by Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, Lady Gaga’s keytar, and beyond. Seven engrossing essays by veteran music journalists and scholars discuss the technical developments that fostered rock’s seductive riffs and driving rhythms, the thrilling innovations musicians have devised to achieve unique effects, and the visual impact their instruments have had. Abundant photographs depict rock’s most iconic instruments—including Jerry Lee Lewis’s baby grand piano, Chuck Berry’s Gibson ES-350T guitar, Bootsy Collins’s star-shaped bass, Keith Moon’s drum set, and the white Stratocaster Jimi Hendrix played at Woodstock—as works of art in their own right. Produced in collaboration with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, this astounding book goes behind the music to offer a rare and in-depth look at the instruments that inspired the musicians and made possible the songs we know and love.

An incredible resource for any guitar or rock fan.
This book offers an incredible and unique look into the history of some of the most legendary instruments in rock & roll. The photos are incredible, for many of these instruments, I have never seen such good detailed images. This book highlights the limited-run exhibit at the MET museum in NYC, and it does an incredible job of being a resource that will be fun to read and look at for decades to come. Highly recommended.
A great accompaniment to the Met Exhibit.
Great coffee table book of the Met exhibit. Wonderful stories and great picture. Highly recommended. Shop around for price. Do not however, buy the accompanying picture book titled Play It Loud- a picture album. This is little more than a 50 page pamphlet. And at $18 hardly a bargain. Stick with the big book, and go see the exhibit before its gone.
Guitars for everyone!
If you have a guitar player in your home get this book for them ... my husband loves, loves, loves this book ... He often tells me about something he’s read in it - I haven’t the foggiest notion what he’s talking about , but he couldn’t be happier
Great book for classic rock fans
Got this book as a gift and enjoyed every page. Perfect present for anyone who loves classic rock!

Perfect present
This was a great Christmas present! My music loving dad and uncle loved this book!
Great Price
Although I'm a long time supporter of the Met Museum, as a retired person, every penny counts, and it was good to find this catalog for a lower price than even the MMA member discount.
Play iT loud
Wonderfull exposition at The Met.
