Explore the Expanding Peterson Line. Leave your reading glasses behind. Now Roger Tory Peterson's classic Field Guide to Eastern Birds has been reissued in a larger format specially produced for those who don't want to take their reading glasses into the field. Peterson's treasured illustrations have been reproduced in beautiful color. Species descriptions include only the most important identification elements -- size, voice, and habitat -- in large, easy-to-read type. Color range maps, conveniently located next to the species accounts, have been updated specifically for this book. Roger Tory Peterson's original text has been revised and updated by Virginia Peterson, who worked closely with her husband and created the maps for the fourth edition of the Field Guide to Eastern Birds; Noble Proctor, a professor of biology who was a close friend of Roger Tory Peterson's and led natural history tours for twenty-five years; and Pete Dunne, vice president of the New Jersey Audubon Society and director of the Cape May Bird Observatory, as well as the author of many books on birding. The maps have been updated by Virginia Peterson and Paul Lehman, past editor of Birding magazine and a bird tour leader who has traveled extensively around North America studying bird distribution and identification and has written many articles on these subjects.

This guide is well worth the money

My mom used to watch/feed the birds and she cherished her Peterson’s guide way back then. That’s partially why I purchased mine. Peterson was also highly recommended at a bird watching workshop that I attended in a neighboring county a few months ago. It perfectly serves my purposes because of the way it’s laid out, but especially because of the arrows that it shows on the pictures to highlight the easy identifiers on most of the birds. It may be large for field work, but it might not be. I use mine in my living room while watching the birds in my back yard and it’s perfect for me.

Love the large format.

I actually ordered this by mistake and didn't need the larger format, but I really love the large-format book layout. The pictures are large enough to see detail and I like how the information is presented. The book is easier to hold and use while trying to identify the birds. The information about each bird is minimal (significantly less than the regular one)-- but that is not so bad in terms of doing IDs and learning the features of the birds. I'm really happy with the book!

Disappointing edition!

My 1st bird guide I bought in 1965 for a college level Ornithology class was R.T. Peterson's Eastern N. America guide. It had LOTS of info on the species included in that edition. The current edition has WAY LESS info thereby making it much LESS useful as a field guide, in my opinion.

Dad's go to

Bought this with 2 other bird books for my Dad. He likes this one the best because of the large print. It is easier for him to read and identify the birds in the back yard.

Bought a Second Time

This is my second purchase of this book. I just bought it for my 40ish yr. old son who is now getting into birds. The Large Edition is not for ease of reading for me, but ease of searching. I have several other Field Guides of different subjects and this is my favorite because of the size. It is big enough to be able to search the pics easily to identify a bird quickly, yet small enough to carry about or in a day-pack. While it is not as thorough as some other guides, it serves me very well for southwest Missouri and surrounding area.

Excellent reference.

Easy to read, large print, birds well described and photos accurate as well as helpful. Book is, however, larger than I anticipated. Could be difficult to carry afield.

Love the large print.

I love the large print and large pictures in this book. I is still easy to carry on walking trips.

Still The Best Out There

Love the Peterson Guides and have used them for decades. I've recommended them to friends, students, and environmental professionals working outdoors around the country.

Great Field Guide !

I purchased this field guide for my two daughters for Christmas. I have an older version and would often use it to identify birds on our bird feeders or in the yard when the girls were young. Now they have homes of their own and bird feeders in their yards so they can pass on the tradition of bird watching and identifying birds with their families.

Great, large-format bird book!

I bought this as a gift for my sister. I am very familar with Petersen's guides but my sister was not. She loves the large format and the aids identifying similar species. Great book and great service!

Buy it as a supplement to field guides

I bought this guide for a beginner who needs to look for Peterson's quick field ID arrows and to read his better song descriptions. The detail in the large scale images are also a bonus for someone who's not seen dozens of birds of one species. Earlier I'd given her Sibley's work for his more complete information, more images of immatures etc. and as an actual guide to take into the field. My own preferred carry is Basic Peterson's Field Guide.

Wonderful ID method with these Peterson guides!

I was so glad they redid this book with the maps and pictures all together with the descriptions. Of course, Peterson's series are the absolute BEST for IDing birds. Just moved east and am learning all the new (to me) birds!

Great book!

Easier print and pictures than the other books. Great gift!

Nice and well priced.

I gave this to a friend as a 'gift'. She commented to me she's used it to look up a bird that recently visited her feeder and she was unfamiliar with it. I have other bird books and this is very comparable. The pictures are in color and details about the birds are very good.

Excellent find...

This book was a birthday gift for a good friend of mine who is legally blind. She loves it! Fit the need perfectly!

Large format print!

I didn't intend to buy the large format guide, but am pleased that I did. The pages are very readable, and I keep the guide handy from the seat in my bird viewing gallery.

Best book in this category!!

Beautifully illustrated. A treasure to own and put in my knapsack. I Take a photo. Then I compare the picture to the photos and this enables me to identify my photo flawlessly!!

Best field guide out there for eastern birds

Great field guide. Just like the original but smaller version but with larger format that helps my aging eyes.

Excellant Bird Identification Book

Had a 1980 version, which was much better, than Audubon bird book. Updated version is larger an of the same quality, as the 1980 version. Pictures of birds very accurate for identification.

It’s the only book you need if you’re on the east coast. Great pictures.

Same Peterson field guide quality as always

Have used a Peterson field guide for years, until it fell apart. This edition is the same quality and the larger print is a plus. I particularly like the new format that includes the range maps on the same page with the description of the birds.

Larger format makes bird ID very easy!

I call this my over 50 bird book, very easy to ID birds, excellent illustrations in this large format.

Love this book

Great bird book

Great Book

My dad's eyesight is limited and this book is terrific for him. Large print, large photographs. Detailed descriptions. Very good detail with focus on variants of species. It's a great combination with his bird feeders. He uses it every day. I highly recommend.

Excellent source for identifying birds even for neophytes likes me

Excellent Book for the Birder

After moving the Eastern US a few years ago, I needed a resource guidebook to help me identify many of the birds that were frequenting my property. Couldn't be happier with it, and keep it on a nearby shelf with a pair of binoculars on top of it.

SUCH A GOOD BIRD GUIDE THAT I BOUGHT ONE FOR MY SISTER!

Peterson Field Guides: Eastern Bird, Large Format Edition

This easy on the eyes large format edition is a great book for all ages and levels of bird watching. The soft cover makes it light to handle or take with you in the field. The large format makes identifying birds much easier and quicker. Well layed out and practical.

Beautiful pictures and adequate bird descriptions

Beautiful pictures and adequate bird descriptions. Large format makes browsing and reading easy.

Love this.

Love this book. I purchased it for my 81 year old mother who loves to watch and identify birds. The size and font used in this book really is much easier to read.

Great colorful book

Great

I was extreemly happy to find this book in larg print. This was a Birthday gift for My Sister who is a readaholic and has problems reading small print. The book is bold and pictures are simply beautiful.

Fantastic Guide for Birders

This over sized edition of Peterson's Guide is an excellent source of identifying local birds. Very well organized, very informative, and the larger pictures are easy on the eyes. Well worth the cost.

Fantastic book

Perfect for birding and discovering local birds

Perfect book for the older birder

I purchased this book for my mother, who is in her 70s. She recently started birding so this was her first field guide-easy to read, large pictures make identification very easy for the beginning birder of any age.

Large format is perfect

I love this bigger book we keep it handy at all times, for we spend a lot of time outdoors and many birds visit Florida

Bird Identification

Best book ever for easy use & clear identification of east coast birds. Large print is perfect for switching from binoculars to identifying details. I regularly give copies to my friends as I think it's simply the best. Lee W.

Great book for Eastern Birds

This has been a great book for Eastern USA birds. Easy to find the bird your looking for, or trying to identify!

Eastern Bird Book

The book was exactly what I was looking for. I have used it constantly since it arrived. I moved here from the west so the birds that I see here are mostly different. The book has been a great help. Terry A. Williams

Great bird book

Good for beginning birders.

This is good for beginning birders, the pictures show good detail and the maps are helpful to follow what regions the birds are likely to migrate through. I put taps with the family groups on my books for a quick way of identifying birds.

Perfect for my dad who has macular degeneration

Perfect for my dad who has macular degeneration! He likes it a lot. Wish other guides were available in large print.

love it

I ordered it for my elderly father who unfornately has alzhiemers. I ended up not giving it to him since he already has two others he doesn't use. But my grand kids ended up using it with him. They can identify with the bigger pictures and read it easilly.

Informative Book

It is very useful as we watch the birds come to the bird feeder we ordered with it. Very informative

My favorite bird book

Comparisons of similar species and views of both sexes and juveniles make this book my first pick to identify a new bird. The drawings, complete with arrows pointing to defining features, speed identification. Although it is large print, which is easy on the eyes, there is really not all that much text. The book is mostly colored drawings showing several birds to a page with their expected location maps and a few key facts. Both sexes and young are shown if they are different and I love the arrows which draw your attention quickly to things that make this species unique from another. Special comparison pages show all the similar warblers together, for example, and highlight the differences. The advantage of really good drawings over photographs is that individual birds can differ so you may not see a match as easily. Species may change color as they grow, or with the season, they can look very different when fluffed out than otherwise. Photos don't often catch good views in flight and lighting may affect the color you see or don't see. Drawings can overcome all those issues and give you a good representation from different angles, etc. I love good photographs, but find the drawings help me more often in early identifications. While this book is larger than I want to carry in the field, it has so much useful information packed into it with surprisingly few words, it is the first I reach for at home. For example, it allowed me to successfully identify the young Eastern Towhee that recently turned up under my feeders. This baby's coloring is nothing like its parents and none of the other books or software showed or described it. While I turn to other sources for in-depth information about a bird, first I have to know what kind it is. Some are easy to identify and other books work fine, especially if it's a common bird. But since this book includes so many types, great drawings, comparisons and arrows pointing out what specifically to look for, it's the best first place to look. Highly recommended identification resource.

Great book with extra birds, but...

Great book that has extra birds that aren't in the eastern region, but it doesn't tell you what the bird eats. Otherwise it is a great book. Search by index, passerine birds, birds of prey, fowl-like birds and more. Nice book, but I wish it told you what the bird eats.

excellent

I bought this item for my mom who likes to sit on her deck and watch the wildlife storm her various feeders. She loves it, the large illustrations make it easier for her to find the species she is looking for

Not your father's Peterson Guide

I mistakenly thought that the large print version would be the same as my trusted old Peterson Guide, just in large print. Nope! The format is entirely different and greatly abbreviated. It's misleading to title this text the same as the original. This may be a nice guide for a novice bird watcher for bird feeder identification. I gave my copy away to a shut-in with minimal bird identifying experience.

Big Bird Book a Hit

Got this book for my Mom. She had the original, but now with the large pictures and print she's able to once again enjoy and utilize this great guide.

Peterson Field Guides: Eastern Birds, Large Format Edition

Nice LARGE print book. Some graphics lower quality, but overall a great book for the price.

This is a great book for those people who need a larger print book. It is very easy to read, and the illustrations are decent quality. My only complaint is it appears a few of the images in the book were re-sized from a small image and as a result appear pixelated. Despite this, I still recommend based on the good price and accessibility to those who benefit from large print.

Impressed

Arrived in record time. The book was exactly what I wanted. Much easier than driving to a store to look for it!
