Life changing
The whole world would be a better place if everyone read this book.
Great read…something to keep reading again and again.
Loved this book. So helpful in these difficult times navigating through change.
An absolute must read
I watched an interview on CNN with Professor Marc Brackett discussing emotions. The timing and need were perfect for me to purchase his book Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive. My bias told me that this would be an academic tome full of footnotes and a dry read. I was entirely wrong (the crossreferences are in the appendix). Professor Brackett’s is a highly entertaining and educational read. If you are in the working world, then definitely a must-read. I wish my family and friends would all read this book. I highly recommend it. Dr. Brackett is promoting a happier way of life. If you have kids facing bullying at school, this is an essential read. They are complete with real-life encounters and amusing anecdotes, and a page-turner. Please regard this as a practical handbook or a skills guide to more fêted interpersonal relationships book. Dr. Brackett writes intimate accounts of his challenges as a kid growing up with his emotions and numerous examples taken from his family situation, in addition to the knowledge gained traveling nationally and internationally. I valued the way he weaves into this volume other academics in his field and contributions they made regarding emotions and related topics. If you are a male, female, parent, grandparent, spouse/partner, manager, employer, employee, worker, teacher or student, then this book/handbook is primarily for you. It was back to school for a new academic year this past week. My daughter tells me that her twins were not happy at the end of their first day. Had my daughter read this book, I suspect that she may have addressed her 12-year old’s situation differently. After reading Marc’s book the first time, you will gain additional benefit as you reread a second, third, and multiple times after that. There is so much to learn and apply in our daily lives. What a terrific contribution Dr. Marc is making to society, your input is profoundly affirmative. Thank you and thank you for helping me thrive. (This is much better than Dr. Benjamin Spock’s Baby and Child Care that my parents used to raise me). Bottom line: this book is a fun, informative, and an educational read

This book does a great job of explaining why emotion skill are essential throughout life, but also really gives insight into how to implement the RULER tool. I hope to incorporate this work into my teaching and research efforts. I also plan to better advocate for emotional skills to help my environments improve even more. Also check out the Permission to Feel book club from his fb page. It was a great way to kick off 2022.
Everyone should read this book
I have read this book 3 times so far. It is a must read for everyone. Life changing. Everyone should read this book, parents , students , teachers , CEO, you name it. By far it is the best "life" book I have ever read. I am a better person for having read this book. Thank you Marc for all you do to help others.
Must read
Read it! Just do it. Your family, friends, and your own mental well-being will thank you for it
A fundamental problem facing humanity
Like Mister Rogers, the author has devoted his life to helping other people to better understand their own feelings, and to feel more loved and understood. The world will become a much better place of more people choose to develop the skills of an emotion scientist.
A valuable contribution to the crucial need of understanding and using our emotions effectively
The author states that “emotions are the most powerful force in the workplace—as they are in every human endeavour”. I strongly believe this and there is increasing research and evidence that is coming to the same conclusion. If this truly is the case, then it is crucial that we learn more about emotions, what they are, how they impact us and how we can use them to work for us, rather than against us. This book comprehensively lays out and explains all these areas and gives us a roadmap for better understanding, navigating and more effectively mastering our emotions and those of others around us. As the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and Yale Child Study Center, Marc Brackett has developed the RULER system to help schools enhance and manage their emotions. The system has been adopted in thousands of schools in the U.S. and outside. The results have been very positive. This is not an academic tome, full of research and statistics. The author shares his own struggles with being bullied as a child and writes in a very accessible, entertaining and human manner.
Crystallized my Emotions
I’ve never left a review before, but I felt compelled to thank Marc for writing this book. After reading it, I now have far greater clarity about what emotions are, how to understand and label them, and - most importantly for me - how to regulate and express my feelings. This book is truly fantastic!
Great Book; Slow Reading
This is an excellent book and a very important subject matter to shed light on! The author does a good job of breaking the subject down and introducing it to the every day person. He includes many scientific studies and anecdotal stories to make his points. However, as an avid reader of self-help books, I found this one to be very slow reading after the first few chapters. The author repeats himself a lot. Others may find the repetition useful, such as for a nightstand book where you are taking it one chapter at a time, but I found it tedious. The author also provides multiple supporting studies for each concept he introduces. Again, tedious for some, but important to others. If you are an Educator, this book will be especially helpful for you since it introduces the subject matter in an easy to pick-up way, but also includes a lot of great supporting evidence. While it lacks a certain depth, it is easy to digest and provides tools to start putting what you learn into practice or to share it with others. If you are a parent or just curious about the subject matter, you could simply listen to the Authors talks online. I did not find anything here that was especially different from the other talks I've heard him give (youtube & podcasts).

A foundational guide for rich existence.
I feel inspired by the possibilities having read this book. The hope and opportunity of emotional literacy is undeniable and well worth the investment of this book and some practice. There is a fantastic mood meter app you can get to help you build the literacy and practice it with the people you care about. Feelings are the very foundation of our life experience. Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling them, then Expressing them and Regulating them is a means to connect to our life experience and engage more deeply and richly with the world around us.
Good book. Easy to read.
Thanks for the timely service.
Permission To Feel is not just a self help exploration of feelings but an advocacy program
Permission To Feel is not just a self help exploration of feelings but an advocacy program that every human being on this planet should read and participate in. This book was written with an incredible step by step program on learning how to really pay attention to what our bodies are telling us, how to listen to the cues , and how to feel. With his RULER assessment Dr. Brackett takes the reader on a journey to not only identify and process their feelings but really understand WHY and HOW to navigate them. I loved this book and the weekly book clubs that Dr. Brackett offered. I highly recommend reading the book and then watching the weekly videos on his Facebook or YouTube pages.
Great read and important for society
have followed Marc Brackett’s work on emotional literacy and have long been interested in his approach to social emotional learning. My role in local government allows me the opportunity to hear from our youth about the issues that most concern them, and have learned that stress, anxiety and depression is something that they and many of their peers are likely to experience. Being concerned about the mental wellbeing of our youth, including my own children, I wanted to learn how to help them express themselves, and how to cope when faced with challenging situations. I feel that I now have the tools I was seeking. Dr. Brackett’s book is not just researched based. In Permission to Feel, he also interjects personal vignettes about his childhood that keeps one interested until the end. An excellent read!
Great book for educators and parents with children of all ages
In Permission to Feel, Dr. Marc Brackett provides an interesting and easy read on why we need to invest more in teaching ourselves and the next generation how to identify and best utilize our emotions to not only live a better life, but a successful one. As an educator and parent, I believe the only way we can turn around the stress and anxiety that's plaguing our youth is to hear and validate their feelings and this book is a great way to start the process of learning how we can create a more feeling-conscious society.
Learn to use emotions wisely
Our emotional brain is running all the time, yet no one is taught how to engage constructively with that potential force. Until now. Brackett teaches us to check in with ourselves--at any time--to name our feeling(s) and then make a conscious decision about how to use those feelings wisely. (And a list of feelings in the form of the Mood Meter is printed on the inside front cover of the book.) Research shows that when we do that, we become more effective, we have better mental health, and better relationships. Permission to Feel is the addition and subtraction of emotion science, and one day we'll get to algebra and trigonometry. This book is my go-to gift to people during the holidays.
Helped Me Personally and Professionally!
This book is a game changer. I work as a therapist and while some concepts are common knowledge to me, this book gave an educational framework to help myself and clients with understanding emotional processes and a pragmatic approach to management/regulation. If you are curious into the depths of feelings/emotions and how to build tools to really understand the how /why/what to do about those feels this book is for you!
Indispensable book
A must read for all educators! It’s a shame school systems can’t get on the same page about SEL and use RULER. I will be using it with all of the students and staff I work with.
Permission to Feel
Enjoyed reading this book as the author discusses the importance of recognizing, regulating and expressing emotions in one’s life. I found however the section in which he discusses his own experience of rolling out his emotions program at local schools to be hard to engage, as much as the earlier sections.
Worthy Read
Dr. Brackett has written an accessible, enlightening "handbook" for his audience, including educators like myself. I read Permission to Feel in one sitting and learned new way of approaching EI in my literature classes. His "RULER" tool dovetails nicely with short stories/novels as we examine characters' motives and expression of feelings (or lackthereof!)--then apply to our own lives. When asked about human emotions, most people say "happy" or "sad," but PtF opens up a bounty of other emotions to identify and express. I highly recommend this book that offers a fresh way of looking at EI.
Powerful Stories and Important Message
As a former school principal and professional coach I can't think of a more important topic for today's world. Marc Brackett's life experience and education have made him the ideal person to lead an emotion revolution. His Mood Meter (and the awesome App) have helped me more broadly and clearly identify my emotions. The emotional well-being of leaders spreads to their entire organization. By implementing ideas from this book, our workplaces (and homes) can become kinder, healthier, and even more productive.
Meaningful, actionable, and important for all people
This book should be essential reading for every person. As a college student and aspiring educator, I found the messages extremely relevant - we need emotional intelligence in every aspect of our lives. Something I appreciated about the book was its actionability. Marc walks readers through his RULER process of Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotion with plenty of helpful tips. Packed with research and anecdotes, this book is a powerful presentation of the need for emotional intelligence.
Teachers Read This Book!
This book is a must-read for teachers returning to school in the midst of a pandemic. We have all been through communal trauma, and teachers need to be prepared to help the children in their care process through their emotions. I loved that it had lots of interesting stats about the importance of emotional intelligence in schools and in school leaders. It was a very practical tool for learning to identify emotions and work through them in a healthy way.
Timely, valuable, pleasurable read
This book is intended to help the reader identify and manage emotions within and with others. Common sense tells us emotions are poorly recognized by most males and many females. The style is conversational and the writing skill is top notch. The author gently guides us through concepts, easy to understand research, and he offers a methodology to consider if not practice that clearly has the potential to support our self understanding and improve our performance. By far the best book about emotional intelligence I have read. Many thanks to the author for helping us to understand these concepts
The importance of emotions in our lives
Dang! I wished I would have read this book 50 years ago. Such great Insight on the importance of emotions and how it affects our lives and our performance and production. Having stable and motions allows our potential to develop to the fullest that it can. Thank you dr. Marc for doing this
Powerful and transforming read!
This is a powerful read that is honest with tools accessible to all. As an educator of kindergarten I desired to learn more skills to support my young students in self regulation, only to find the emotional work I needed to do as an adult. The approach in Permission to Feel is important and transforming. The power of learning to be an emotional scientist transforms our inner talk as well as how we engage in the world with others, and is a message our society and culture is in desperate need of.
If you’re reading this, you need this book!
everyone- and i mean EVERYONE- needs to read this book. so enlightening not just about navigating our own situations and emotions, but also how to deal with/navigate the emotions of other people, especially those who are “emotionally illiterate”/not emotionally intelligent
A Must-Read Book for All!
"Permission to Feel" is brilliantly written: heartfelt, raw, scientifically grounded, user-friendly and deeply compelling. Marc Brackett does an extraordinary job of illuminating, through science and narrative, core features of neurobiology that make us fundamentally human. Our lives exist in relationship with others, and if readers can walk away with even one pearl of wisdom that reshapes behavior in everyday life, it can make their world (and as a result that of the people within it!) a kinder, more empathic, connected, happy & healthy place. I cannot recommend it more highly.
Fantastic Way to Up Your EI Game
I picked this book up after listening to Marc's guest spot on Brene Brown's Unlocking Us podcast. He did such a great job explaining the nuances of emotional intelligence there that I added the book to my shopping list. But when he announced his weekly book club to read along with him, I couldn't say no! This book is the first step in a life-long journey of becoming your best-self. READ ITTT
A Great Tool for gaining emotional awareness.
This is a great book to begin the conversation about emotion. The RULER provides a helpful tool to increase emotional intelligence. It has wide application to many relational contexts.I highly recommend it.

Want to leave a lasting legacy? Learn the language of emotion and give yourself the gift of a good life: Permission To Feel!
Dr Brackett guides us to understand and regulate our emotions to choose our best actions.
Permission to Feel teaches the reader why emotions matter and how to be an emotion scientist, guiding us to understand and handle our feelings so that we make healthy and happy choices, allowing us to live our best lives. Dr. Brackett writes in riveting and authentic text that feels like your favorite uncle is sitting across from you, nurturing, inspiring and teaching you.
Good concept but poorly written
The concept and initial chapters are good But most of the book tries to sell the concept and associated training program instead of diving deeper
AMAZING AND LIFE CHANGING!!!!!!
This book will unlock the best version of yourself. We are emotional beings yet we stuff and suppress our feelings because they don’t belong in certain settings or situations. Marc has dedicated his life and made leaps and bound of progress in educating the world why emotional intelligence is so important. Read this book. You will learn so much!
Must-read for educators!
Permission to Feel is a must-read for educators and anyone looking to explore their own emotions deeper. This book provides an easy-to-follow approach to improve conversations around emotions and strategies to process the various emotions people feel. I am glad I read this book as it has given me useful tools to understand my own feelings but has also allowed me to help my students with the confusing emotions they are carrying with them.
Who is YOUR Uncle Marvin?
"To understand the context of the question, Who is YOUR Uncle Marvin?, do yourself a favor and read Dr. Marc Brackett's book Permission to Feel. More than a book, Marc has created a clarion call for all to hear if we hope to flourish in life and realize our full potential. Permission to Feel is a gift to mankind at precisely the right time. The next generation is counting on us. Bless you, Marc.
A great place to start with EI
If you haven't read much about emotional intelligence, this is the perfect place to start. If you're like me and somewhat obsessively read about the topic, it may be a tad basic, though the RULER method is helpful to put lessons into something tangible.
The Emotion Revolution has begun
Extraordinary book, a must-read for everyone. Emotion skills are at the core of everything we do, and this book will teach you how to recognize emotions - yours and those of others, and will give you practical ideas to learn how to regulate them.
Excellent timely read!
This book offers insights about how we can coach our students (and ourselves) to regulate emotions during this scary pandemic. Great science behind this work. I also recommend watching a recorded webinar with Marc Brackett or listening to him on Brene Brown's podcast to get a sense of his knowledge and personality.
Read this!
Marc Brackett has done some powerful work in human emotions and his book is worth reading and putting into practice what he suggest. His RULER approach is promising and helps to lay out how to work with emotions.
Life changing
I wish I had this book 20 years ago. I’ve only just started using the tools from the book and I can already tell it’s helping. The author is very descriptive, offers thorough explanations and practical examples for the real world. Everyone should read this book!
All teachers should read this.
If you want to develop emotional intelligence for yourself, your family, your students, read this book.
Helpful and hopeful
A good reminder that children need to be taught how to experience emotions from adults who can competently do so. A sort of “put on your own oxygen mask first” refresher.
Excellent!
This book has helped me, as well as my students better understand our emotions and how to regulate them! I was also able to attend a free online book club with the author. What a treat!
Well worth it- interesting, practical and helpful
I am so glad I found this book as it gives language to emotion and provides practice steps to teach you how to beat recognize, understand, label, express and regulate emotions. It has so much practical application and has been helpful in thinking about communication in our family unit.
Excellent book
Brackett's work makes so much since, and the world would be a better place if we all practiced the tangible skills that he reminds us of in this book. He is witty, offers a lot of great information, and writes in such an approachable way.
Now more than ever
Marc Brackett gives us tools to become the best humans we can be - for ourselves and others. Every parent, every teacher, every human can benefit from being more in touch with and accepting of our feelings. Naming them is just one step - but oh so important.
Emotional intelligence must read
Best Emotional intelligence book ever written. It is applicable to parents, education system, leadership and self development. This is not a self help book - this is from academia but written clearly and with practically tool. A book that will change your life.
Short and sweet
It was short and to the point. I feel the subject could have been expanded more to be more practical. But I do believe it is a must read...
Vital to family health
Marc’s book is a gift to ourselves and to share with our loved ones. Emotion scientists are persons, parents, teachers , and friends who have the knowledge and skills of RULER and practice, practice, practice them. Our families will reap the rewards of connection rather than disconnection. We will be a stronger, safer, and sane society
Great info
I just started reading the book and so far it’s great! I’m really enjoying the book, there’s a lot of research and statistical data.
READ THIS BOOK
This is a MUST read to help improve your emotional health, which most people don't realize they need to do. Trust me, you need it.
Excellent
This is an excellent book for those of us who want to gain a better understanding of our emotions and those of people around us. I love the way it is written in clear language that's easy to absorb.
Valuable for expanding self awareness
Really valuable for expanding language and awareness of the full range of my emotions... and I’ve got quite a way to go. Teaching this in schools would create huge changes in our culture for the better.
Rules - Solid Resource
I really enjoyed this book. Not only does Marc address a topic close to my heart but he provides ideas on how to help us all improve our ability to be more effective in controlling our emotions.
A life saver
This book is an essential read for people who are struggling to express their emotions, either to your loved ones or to the community around you. It teaches you a tangible method, acronym as RULER, to effectively express what you’re feeling. It teaches the importance of emotions in one’s life.
RULER school recommended reading
This book is amazing. My children attend a RULER school, and this books explains all aspects of the RULER model on emotional intelligence. It even comes with the mood meter printed on both the first and last pages of the book and provides helpful apps and links for practicing the method.
“It’s not easy to change a whole society but we can try.”
I loved this book! After I read it I ordered my kids some books about feelings and emotions. I’ve known how important it all is as a gentle parent but now we need to start having conversations about it as a family.
Emotions matter and this book matters! Highly recommend!
Marc Brackett teaches us how to be emotional scientists and improve our quality of life at home and school. He provides us the vocabulary and tools to thrive! This book is powerful for educators and parents/families. #EmotionsMatter Highly recommend!
Intelligent!
This is a must read for everyone. As someone who grew up being told to be less emotional, I realized how traumatic that mentality would be to pass on to my kids.
Good quality content
Very interesting book. Shipped quick and was in great condition. Got to learn a lot about myself.
love the message but not an easy read
I love & agree with the message of this book but didn't find it easy to get through. it reads more like academic literature & the chapters were too long for me.
Mental health depends on knowing your emotions and regulating them!
This book is great for all educators and parents. We need more emotional education in our homes and schools! This book will help us get started.
Wish I had this when I was a kid
Knowing what your emotions are and how to regulate them is super important. I wish I had known about this when I was a kid and was being bullied.
This is a must read
Fresh, real approach to dealing with feelings.
Fantastic read
Helpful book about handling and strategizing emotions. It’s a great book for kids, teens, and adults to read. I really enjoyed this book!
Emotional Intelligence Toolbox Staple
This gentleman was hysterical and on point as our Convocation Keynote presenter. His delivery is like Seinfeld, and he was incredibly approachable. This was my first purchase of his books and his work on Emotional Intelligence is fascinating.
Excellent source of information in a fresh way
It’s information I am interested in understanding. I find the writing style hard to read but it’s a good book.
Makes you think of your parents struggle with no info!!!
Deep, goes to extremes at times, but info great to know!!
Highly recommended!
I like everything about it but most especially the way it is crafted for educators and students.
No more being seen and not heard!
This work could transform us. There is so much unnecessary shaming and stuffing of feelings that leads to trauma. I feel hopeful.
A Compassionate, Courageous, and Insightful Read
This book gives me hope at a time when things are especially challenging. We can all make this paradigm shift - feelings matter and we are all better off giving ourselves and those around us "permission to feel"...
Great Book!!!
This is exactly what we need to be teaching in our schools and families to help our society.
Life Changing Book
This book changed my experience of the world. LOVE IT.
Great Read!
Great perspective. This made me change my view on how to feel.

First half is dynamite
I am somewhat torn on this review because the first half of the book was absolute dynamite. Dr. Brackett does a great job of building a connection with the reader by sharing some of his personal journey, explaining how emotions affect learning and performance, and the application of his RULER model by incorporating the Mood Meter into his own research. The thing that makes the first half of the book so good is it's relevance and application. Unfortunately the back half of the book is mostly the author trying to justify the importance of his message. I can understand and appreciate that he has probably spent most of his career justifying his work, however it was just too rambly and suggested a lack of confidence in his research. As an avid personal development book reader, the back half of the book was really difficult to finish and delayed me finishing this book. Nonetheless, it is incredibly difficult to find a book on emotional intelligence that is clinically and academically sound which is what the author delivers. I commend the authors passion that can be found in this book along with the practical application and sound research.
An Important Tool for Parents and Educators
Helping children recognize and regulate their emotions is a daunting task. We have to look at a child's behavior, especially any form of acting out, as communication about some form of inner turmoil. Marc's book guides adults to become emotion scientists that can respond to the child's emotional state (and their own) with curiosity and provides tools to identify, express, and regulate emotions. I am so happy that this curriculum is being taught in schools. The world would be a much better place if we all practiced these tools.
too technical for the average reader
Too technical for the average reader
Very informative
I would suggest this book to others especially when they are angry and afraid to speak out and voice their opinions. There are some things I don’t agree with, but keeping an open mind, and looking at it from the author’s perspective I can see what he is getting at.
A must read for anyone in a position of authority or leadership
"Permission to Feel" should be required reading for all teachers, administrators, supervisors, business owners, or others in leadership positions. The author was bullied and misunderstood as a child, with parents who loved him and wanted the best for him, but lacked the vocabulary and techniques to help him cope emotionally and to enable him to effectively communicate his emotions. Luckily for him, his Uncle Marvin, who was a school teacher, had thought about and developed skills that fostered the necessary dialogue for the author to learn how to better communicate and control his emotions. I think most readers would agree with the author's statement: "If we don't understand emotions and find strategies to deal with them, they will take over our lives." The author has spent his career studying emotions and coming up with strategies to teach emotional intelligence to others, with a focus on schoolchildren. He and his uncle devised five essential skills which are encapsulated in the acronym RULER -- (1) recognize our own emotions and those of others; (2) understand those feelings and determine their source and then see how they've influenced our behaviors; (3) label our emotions with a nuanced vocabulary; (4) express our feelings in accordance with cultural norms and social contexts in a way that tries to inform and invites empathy from the listener; and (5) regulate our emotions, rather than let them regulate us, by finding practical strategies for dealing with what we feel and why. The book explains these five skills in more detail, discusses the efforts of the author to teach these skills in schools and businesses, the resistance he faced (and still faces) from school officials or business leaders, and examples of the benefits that can be demonstrated when, in a school setting, teachers, other school staff, and students, and in a work setting, employers and employees, have the necessary emotional skills to effectively communicate and regulate their emotions in a healthy manner and to help others do the same. He cites to his own experiences and observations, as well as various studies involving emotional health and how it impacts learning, future success, physical and mental health, job satisfaction and performance, and family relations. One of the best examples was when he told a group of students about failing a karate test and how horrible he felt about himself as a result and then asked them for suggestions of emotional regulation activities they could have offered if they had been his friend at the time. The students offered a variety of different ideas and they discussed why or why not each suggestion might be effective. The teachers were amazed at the dialogue between the students and the author and they realized that teaching emotion skills was something they could integrate into their existing practices and lesson plans. The author discusses the importance of implementing social and emotional learning throughout schooling, with the focus on the skills most appropriate for the ages of the children and their stages in life. He emphasizes the importance of implementing these skills in the college setting as well, acknowledging that it is a harder task because of how colleges are structured, but that graduates who are lacking in social emotional skills will likely suffer in the workplace. The author focuses on the importance of utilizing these skills effectively in the work setting as way to create greater job satisfaction and productivity and reduce the risk of burnout. There is a lot that can be learned from this book and I think that as individuals and as a society, we would mentally healthier, more understanding, more empathetic, and more productive if we felt able to effectively and safely share our emotions with others and that others would seek to be understanding and accepting of what we are sharing. I wish methods to teach these skills had been readily available when I was growing up. I received a review copy from NetGalley.
Bad quality binding.
The book came 2 weeks after the original delivery date of 7 days even though it was a prime product. Then the book finally arrived and binding is completely off and broken.
The best book I have ever read
I never take the time to write reviews, but this is the best book I have ever read. I love to read, especially meaningful pieces that will improve my life, and this book really tops them all. I feel so inspired to learn more and even pursue a career in deepening my knowledge. I am an elementary school teacher and from my experience, THIS is what the world needs. Thank you, Dr. Marc Brackett.
A Clear Case for Acknowledging Feelings in all Sectors of Society
The content of Permission to Feel is highly enriched by its author's journey, while also being backed by scientific study, and sound psychology. The book's structure presents a clear and comprehensive learning experience that has the potential to be life-changing for its readers, and for society at large. Permission to feel is a key factor for human evolution and the necessary next step, it's time has come. This book has the potential to pave the way.
Helpful and insightful
PERMISSION TO FEEL - Marc Brackett I received this free to my Kindle for the purpose of review. I began this book thinking it would be full of facts, figures, medical terms, etc. but was pleasantly surprised. Dr. Brackett's personal life as a young boy way the motivation for this book. Marc Brackett is a professor in Yale University’s Child Study Center and founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. He has spent years studying and researching a potentially accurate method of first learning the deeper issues we often try to hide but they are just there. RULER-Recognize, Understand, Label, Express, Regulate Emotion. PTSD is a real thing and not always related to war, but many times related to childhood issues that never were allowed to be expressed and confronted in a healthy manner. Therefore, we have all ages that act out in non appropriate ways because of being unaware of their own feelings. We have spent decades telling our children and were probably told ourselves "don't cry". Well, what does that do to you the person who is deeply saddened or hurt by someone or something. It threatens our value and self-worth. When we see suicide on the rise in the USA we must allow people to feel and express that feeling. Of course, all aspects of the RULER philosophy have to be looked at and acted upon accordingly. I highly recommend this book to parents with young children, couples with no children, singles; actually all people can benefit. You can better evaluate and make your own changes and you can be a more empathetic person and able to help someone else. No greater joy than to be a part of someone's Lon term satisfaction and purpose to life.

The Ruler Method works!
It was the subtitle that hooked me: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive I am a PTSD survivor and my son is autistic, so you can imagine that emotions run pretty high in this home. As I was just preparing to write this review, my son rushed in, in tears and incredibly distraught, because a neighborhood kid had thrown a dead cicada at him. Luckily, I’d finished reading this book and was able to work through the moment using the main element of this book: The RULER Method. "In the RULER framework, the first three skills— Recognizing, Understanding, and Labeling— help us to accurately identify and decode what we and others are feeling. Then, the two remaining skills— Expressing and Regulating— tell us how we can manage those emotions to achieve desired outcomes— our ultimate goal.” MARC BRACKETT, PH. D. – PERMISSION TO FEEL It is a wonderful tool for getting through feelings, which the book describes as the internal response to an emotion. The book reads very well. There are plenty of scientific data and real-world examples to emphasize the causes and effects of emotions as well as the method presented. I, of course, particularly enjoyed the section on how emotions affect creativity. It helped identify what was holding me back when I had “writer’s block” and explained that emotions could be used to enhance creativity as well as hinder it. That gave me a big boost. I recommend this book to literally everyone. There is not a single person it can’t help. So buy it for yourself, your family members, your friends…hell, even your child’s teacher.
feelings about this book
Overall I liked what this book had to share about giving yourself permission to feel - and a process to do it. I didn't like his writing style. His verbiage is simplistic at times and I felt talked at. His vocabulary is good but it could be haughty (i.e. 'acquiescent' is not an everyday word to define 'a great deal of life'). I read Stephen King to expand my vocabulary! Anyway, it left me kind of annoyed! Glad I had permission to express these feelings!
Packed with tools to develop emotional intelligence.
Marc Brackett is a professor at Yale who studies emotional intelligence, especially in children. Through his research at Yale University’s Child Emotional Center, he’s come up with a science-based system called RULER that helps kids better process and express their emotions. He’s already implemented his method at hundreds of schools across the country and seen very positive (and quick) results. The book is divided into three parts. Part One talks about what emotions are and how to become an emotion scientist. Part Two describes the RULER skills. And Part Three is all about putting the RULER system to work in everyday life. I really loved this book. Brackett provides so much insight on how to help kids recognize their emotions, understand them, label them, express them in a way that helps them actually get heard, and then—most important in my household (myself included)—regulate them. My favorite part of this book was learning about coping methods for emotional regulation: eat well, sleep well, exercise, breathe deeply, work on establishing good relationships, and cultivate hobbies. So simple, but I’ve really been focusing on helping my kids do these things, and I’m noticing positive differences already. In short, Permission to Feel is such an informative read. I learned so much, and I continue to use his advice to help myself and my family on a daily basis.
Great introduction to emotional intelligence
You might be surprised to know that the first paper using the term "emotional intelligence" was co-authored by Peter Salovey of Yale in 1990. Nearly 30 years later, Yale continues to be a global leader in EI research. Marc Brackett, as the Director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, knows as much about the topic as anyone on the planet. Fortunately for us, his new book shows that he not only has command of the material, he's also a master of making it relatable and - most importantly - explaining how the research can be put to use to build better lives. Emotional intelligence is a vital set of skills that can help us in every facet of our lives - at work, at home, in our relationships, and more. Some people use "emotional intelligence" as a "kitchen sink" term that applies to a seemingly endless list of positive human attributes - tenacity, optimism, charisma and more. In Brackett's approach, EI is more focused and therefore more practical, with an emphasis on helping us understand our emotions and then regulating them to help us meet our goals. The book will walk you through the proven RULER model - as used by 1m+ students - and demonstrate how you can put it to use in your life. It includes useful tips for the workplace, for parents, and other situations. While it's fun and easy to read, the ideas will help you for years to come.
Give yourself permission
I just finished reading Permission to Feel, by Marc Brackett, and I loved it. First, this book was a great reminder of the power of emotions to be our guides and as places to be curious. I often see people being swept by emotional roller coaster rides, who also go along for the ride versus getting curious about what these powerful indicators are trying to tell them. In chapter 6 Brackett shares a great story about presenting to a group in Napa Valley. When asked about how they felt he was presented with words like, fine, ok, good, curious and intrigued. When he asked them to describe wine, he was serenaded with much richer language. Suddenly, these emotional illiterates sounded like poets. “Rich spice and mineral accents.” “Smoky roasted meat and floral blackberry aromas.” “Bold, supple flavors of apricot and licorice.” “Pepper and cigar box notes.” “Tannins that are big but polished.” “Well-structured, sinewy finish.” “Balanced and driven, with a long finish that lets the fruit echo.” “Dense tannins with a mouth-coating impression.” This fits with my experience in working with emotions, and begs the question, what would be possible if people had a deeper appreciation for their own emotional landscape? Brackett uses a RULER model to walk the reader through a process to move from emotional illiteracy towards emotional intelligence. Recognition, Understanding, Labeling, Expression, and Regulation. All the tools you need to become an emotional Jedi.
This book can be life changing
I JUST finished this, moments ago, and I have to admit that I cried a little because it was over. I loved this book so much. I was raised in a home where we weren’t really allowed to express our negative feelings, and even too much exuberance was frowned upon. Big-time authoritarian household, respect your elder because we say so culture. I wish my parents had the gift of this book way back when they were raising me — it would have made such an important difference in my sense of security in the world. I’m very happy that I have this book as a resource, as I’m raising my own kiddo. I can see the happy difference in our home, with the intention of raising an emotionally intelligent person (instead of the obedient child my parents raised). I’m getting my partner to read it pronto so we can implement the RULER system in our home, and start a charter soon. Please give yourself the gift of buying this book. Even if you don’t have kids, it will help you in every area of your life.
If you read one book on Emotional Intelligence, Permission to Feel is it.
If you read one book on Emotional Intelligence, Permission to Feel is it. Based on decades of research and his own personal and professional experience Brackett guides the reader to understand why not recognizing and finding a healthy way to deal with emotions is a fundamental cause of so much stress/misery and mental illness in the U.S. Brackett lays out his own program ("RULER") that helps people understand and resolve their own emotional issues. If you want a tool to help you understand and deal with your emotions then you should buy this book. On a personal note: I, unfortunately, related strongly to the issues this book covered. It took a lot of therapy and introspection to understand and accept that I was emotionally neglected and to deal with the effects. If I had this book in middle school or high school many of those issues would have been self-resolved. The population in general, especially males, are poorly equipped to deal with their own emotional needs, much less the emotional needs of others (i.e. children, students, subordinates) and having a program that the author created would be a major step in making everyone much more emotionally healthy (which means dealing with stressors/barriers with more ease).
An Important Read for Us All
I think most of the teachers I know who decided to read this book already recognize the importance of social-emotional well-being, and teaching the related skills to our students. But as Mark points out early on in his book, do we, the adults teaching these skills, REALLY know what we're feeling ourselves? How to ACCURATELY recognize what emotions others are displaying? He skillfully points out that we actually don't. We neither have the concrete understanding of the nuances between the feeling words we often use, nor the accuracy in identifying others' emotions, that we think we have. Therefore, it is imperative that we become emotion scientists, and learn to question non-judgmentally as we gather more information. I think this book is especially important in our time, when our world is going through so much turmoil and change. Because at the core, if everyone adopted Marc's system, and became truly committed to being an emotion scientist, rather than an emotion judge, it would actually address an incredibly large number of the problems we face as a society today. I think this is one of those books everyone needs to read. For themselves, for their children, for the co-workers, for our world.
Great content...
But perhaps little lengthier than needed. I really liked all the concepts and examples in the book...also applied to multiple situations. But the meat of the book I would say is about 70% and quite a bit could be skimmed...so don't be daunted by having to read all. Great references...when more detail might be wanted!
A Must Read for Every Parent
As an educator on Emotional Intelligence, I am a constant learner on strengthening my emotional wellness. I am fascinated by human behavior and potential and was not disappointed with “Permission to Feel.” Marc’s writing style is fluid and engaging and I could not put his book down. He shares personal stories and experiences which allows the reader to get a firsthand feel on how to manage our emotions. I have been studying specifically Emotional Intelligence the last four years and have read many books on the subject matter. “Permission to Feel” has become my favorite and one that I will refer back to many times in the future. We live in a very interesting time in history now and while we are all at home, why not learn how to remove our self-limiting beliefs and live our best lives? This books will provide a strong foundation to do so. Honestly, I feel that “Permission to Feel” should be required reading for every educator and student! Thank you Marc for writing this incredible book!
RULER Framework for Social Emotional Learning
This book provides a basic overview of the importance of social emotional learning using a framework of RULER and some basic tools for implementation. A lack of emotional intelligence or access to the vocabulary and awareness needed to navigate emotions is such a hindrance in any environment (work, school, home) so I would recommend this broadly.
Great Read - Any human can relate
We implemented RULER at our school just over a year ago in addition to Positive Discipline so I was looking forward to the launch of this book. I wanted to go a bit deeper into what we had been learning in order to better understand how it can positively impact work life (and ultimately personal as well). What I appreciate is the approach to the research and how anyone can relate to the information provided here. The focus on humans of all ages/backgrounds and how we need to approach our own emotional intelligence in order to positively impact not only ourselves, but those around us for a healthier society was very clear and made sense.
Let Emotions Reign
A Yale University Child Study professor pens a book about how expressing our emotions is the lynchpin for healthy minds and successful relationships. His work is primarily relegated to the educational field but also crosses over into the corporate business realm. His RULER system is a demonstrated way to understand and apply appropriate emotion for maximum impact and the health of children, parents, and teachers. His strategies are designed to mitigate shame and unacceptable emotions and learn to express feelings in a way that builds emotional skills. His system has been tested and purported to work well. His theories are backed by science and data. My issue is that Brackett uses his own worn childhood narrative to disclose how he was bullied as a child and how his parents did not handle things as well as they could have. It is apparent that the author is still processing old wounds and has some work of his own to do. He often came across as petty when giving personal examples of having to digest the insensitive statements that people in his life made, including his own students. Brackett comes across as sensitive to the point of weakness. In this context, he needs to rise above. There is a place and time for everything. Though he does focus on a critical need within the crumbling institutions of our country such as our dysfunctional public school systems, he comes off as somewhat needy and whiny. It isn’t a good look and I’m not sure that it will get him to his goal of free emotional expression for all any faster. Another issue with the book is that it’s not very engaging and I found myself bored while reading the material. Since I read the electronic version, I was incredibly relieved to find at 80% of the way through, I had come to the reference section. I persevered through the book despite not liking it. I would however recommend this book to educators, administrators, and corporate leaders. His method is definitely not mainstream at this point and I look forward to the day when it is. BRB Rating: Read It.
Emotional Intelligence is a skill you learn
This is a brilliant book that got me thinking about how I deal with my own emotions and how I deal with others around me. For years I have been reading about people high emotional intelligence, like it was a trait one is born with. It is not. It is a skill that can be learned and honed to help you recognize your own past, current patterns of thought and behavior, and how to make them work to your advantage. The author’s RULER method - Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, Regulating – gives a clear blueprint for accomplishing just that. I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
This book is a true game changer for me as a parent
What I love most about this book is the evidence that surely proves that these skills are the real deal. It is written from the heart of a person who has not only lived through trauma but used that experience to research methods to help others. I can easily understand what to do in my own home to help my family. An incredible book. My daughter and I are already using the Mood Meter and putting the other RULER skills to work. THANK you for this.
One of the best books I've read this year
This book was perfect from beginning to end. It is timely and important to anyone who deals with children - or adults! I found the book to be full of supported facts, as well as helpful suggestions on how to move forward . There is a huge increase in depression and anxiety in young people today, and this book can go a long way towards helping to relieve these emotions, if people were to use the recommendations within.
Buy this book!!! It’s a game changer
This book was so personal to my own growth, and healing as a parent and community leader. Touched by the examples, stories, and Marc’s ability to teach in such an inspiring way that truly impacts me on the deepest level. I highly recommend this book not just to people looking to heal and grow, but for any one who’s human - this is a book about our own humanity and what’s possible!
A transformative read toward a more progressive society
Dr. Marc Brackett has written a truly relevant and inspiring comprehensive read that contains the answers we've been looking for toward becoming a more inclusive, innovative, and compassionate society. Dr. Brackett's extensive research, coupled with his rich experience as a leading expert in the field of emotional intelligence, has sparked an "emotion revolution," which one day will be a way of life for everyone.
Easy and accessible for everyone... a great book.
An excellent and accessible book. I’ve read it and listened to it, I’ve even bought it for others and I use the related Mood Meter app. Permission to feel is a real book about learning to decode what you and others around you may be feeling. In doing so, we treat ourselves and each other better.
An essential book for a better world.
Reading each line, paragraph, page and chapter of this book represents a valuable guide and tool to recognize ourselves and accept to be re-educated in socio-emotional learning (SEL-RULER). My admiration, respect and congratulations to Dr. Marc Brackett for giving us this valuable gift and inviting us to give Permission to Feel. Paulino Bernot Silis PrepaTec
SO helpful!!
This book made me think actively about how I communicate with literally everyone around me. From dear friends, to family members, to coworkers, to the snippy guy at the cash register during the lunch rush (maybe he's not just a jerk, we all have bad days!) Marc Brackett gives actionable advice and healthy, recognizable explanations. A great read!
Good book, not so good narration
This review is for the Audible version. Though the book maybe be good and have a lot of good and useful information, the narration was hard to listen to. No offense to the author but I wish he used a professional narrator instead.
A definite read
In a time where it feels like everyone has become an emotion judge, this book goes through the steps and the purpose for becoming emotion scientists. I loved Dr. Brackett's candor in talking about his own ACEs and the things that helped him to overcome them. This is a must read for everyone!
Should be required in all teaching programs
RULER is an excellent tool to allow teachers (and others) to help teach about and regular emotions. I wish this was around when I was a child, it took many years for me to figure out my emotions mostly on my own.
Must read
I liked that each rule has it's own chapter. I also enjoyed all the personal stories used, it made it feel more manageable in real life. I couldn't stop listening, I finished the book 48 hours after buying it.
Thank you for writing this book!
This book immediately became one of my favorites. The kind that get a special place on your book shelf. When you see it you just smile, knowingly. Thank you for writing it!
Equally influences the personal and professional
One of the few books I have read this year that applies equally to my professional and personal lives. This should be required reading of every teacher and administrator preparation program.
Permission to Feel
I love that it gives us permission to feel and to help others. Great book!
Emotion
Must read for anyone trying to improve their emotional performance
Emotions are Integral to our Thinking
Dr. Brackett does an excellent job of presenting a case for the emotions that we deserve to feel. Humans experience emotions or feelings (technically different according to Brackett, but used synonymously for those of us who are laymen in the world of these sorts of things) naturally and stifling them is harmful. I read this book because I wanted to hear how dealing with emotions in children is important. I homeschool my own kiddos and wanted to improve my relationship with them and help them learn to deal with their own emotions effectively as they grow and mature. There is some help with that in the one chapter for parents, but the last portion of the book is geared more for school administration. I rated the book 3 stars because while I liked some of the ideas presented, I felt that there was a disconnect between the ideas presented and HOW to actually implement them. I received a free advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley. The opinions are all my own.
Good read
Interesting book, I enjoyed it!
Good Info for Parents and Educators
I love that Marc Brackett is attempting to teach the value of expressing and understanding emotions, but, for me, this book fell short of its goal. The content is geared much more toward educators, which is where his RULER system excels. Also, if you're the parent of a young child or a soon-to-be parent, then there are some important lessons here. I couldn't make the stretch with Brackett's discussion about implementing his RULER system in the workplace. Here's the thing: I can't imagine a scenario in which my boss or coworkers would care to listen to me express my feelings, nor do I think they should be expected to. Honestly, I think we (society) are becoming far too entitled with our emotional sensitivities. Even the author complains about being "triggered" (his word) by his student's snarky but otherwise innocuous comments. We're suddenly demanding "trigger warnings" on novels, and coworkers are complaining about being offended by the way a request is worded. I was hoping this book would be a discussion about how to get our own emotions and sensitivities under control so we don't feel the need to walk on eggshells around each other, but instead it's more about enabling those sensitivities. Brackett shares a lot of information about his childhood, during which he was abused and bullied. This is at the heart of it all. If he'd been able to express his feelings to his parents, and if they'd been better equipped to listen, then the bullying wouldn't have gone as far as it did. His perspective on this offers tremendous insight. I think that's the book he should write. *I received a review copy from the publisher, via NetGalley.*
Badly written nonsense, mostly
I only read the free sample, but it was illogical nonsense, and counterintuitive. Overgeneralizations that all students are always nervous about studying, for example. I am sure that some students are usually nervous about studying, and it is probable that most students are sometimes nervous about studying, but I know that there are times when it is possible for a student to be calm and even joyful when easily mastering something that is very interesting. Unfortunately this is uncommon in many educational settings, but it shouldn't be, because a positive experience can make learning easier and more effective. I expect that if I read the whole book, I would have found some useful insights among the nonsense. Even in the sample, I agreed with the author on a number of points. But I also found much of what he had to say that I agreed with pretty obvious to most people with common sense. Yes I had heard some of the theories that he was debunking, but other people had already done a better job of debunking those theories.
A relatable book on emotional intelligence
Many books about feelings come across as mushy, but that's not the case with this one. This one is about emotional intelligence, and it's based on fifty years of research. It contains classroom and workplace stories, which make it more relatable. The book shares details on how society is impacted by things such as stressful and joyful events. We can change some things just by paying attention to our emotions. The book is designed to help readers understand how they feel, as well as their triggers, and then how that can impact us on a daily basis. The book is written in a way that an average reader can follow it, as it's not full of medical lingo or complicated steps. People in management positions in various professions (from teachers to engineers to doctors) could benefit from reading this book. Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.
Contents are copied and repackaged as his own
While I'm sure the author is intelligent, it's always embarrassing to watch someone pawn off their own work while it looks an awful lot like work that existed long before his. "RULER" sounds like a newer, made up version of the Buddhist acronym "RAIN" and this guy is peddling it as his own? And even further, bottom line - all this guy is pushing is stuff that ALREADY existed in Buddhism. It's called "mindfulness" and Dan Harris wrote an outstanding book about it years ago called "10% Happier." Suddenly, it appears everyone is jumping on that bandwagon and pushing ancient wisdom but packaging it in a new way. So lame.
"Permission to Feel" is an amazing guide for well-balanced living and connection.
Brilliant & sincere, "Permission to Feel" is an amazing guide for a well-balanced relationship with emotions - both your own and of those around you. It's very insightful and informative, and it's written in a narrative that is both interesting and enjoyable. I listened to the audio book, which is narrated by Marc himself and he does a wonderful job. I highly recommend this book and will be giving it a second listen soon!
Damaged
Book cover is dirty before I even got it out of the box. Disappointed as I paid for a ‘new’ book.
Gave me a good insight into why I feel a certain way at different times
This book really helped me understand why I was getting angry, and how to better manage my emotions. I would also recommend this book to parents, as it really gave great insight in how to interact better with kids who are trying to learn and understand their emotions. This is a very strong emotional intelligence book. I highly recommended it.
A must have for any age, but especially if you have children.
I purchased this book after a professor in college recommended it to me. I have two children myself and this book has proven to have very insightful material to understand emotion and become those emotion scientist we need to live a full and happy life. I really truly recommend
One of the Best Reads
Such an inspiring and though provoking book. So worth reading!
Love this book such an insight.
The best book that I have ever read!
Add this book title to your must read list!!
So I just recently discovered Dr. Marc Brackett while expanding my knowledge of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). I'm a counselor so I'm always on the look out for new SEL resources. I really enjoyed his recent book club via Zoom, which prompted me to purchase the book. I've enjoyed every minute of my readings and hope to hear more from Dr. Brackett! Also, the vendor (TextBookNook) did great by promptly shipping out my package, but USPS was slow to deliver probably due to the holidays and pandemic.
This book could change the world!
This book could change the world!!! So much amazing info in there on learning who you are and why you feel the way you do! Love!
a must read for everyone
I am 3/4 the way through the book but for sure giving a great review. I was pleased with this book because I've read every psychology or personality book out there (this is the 3rd that uses the red blue green yellow colors to categorize people but that was personality programs) and I have a BA in Psyc so I wanted something interesting but not too much research or too simplistic, but needed a new read! waited and got this in paperback. very well written and I especially like the chapter in Regulation. Some psyc books are like "here's a formula on CBT or Mindfulness its really trendy so go try it". This book is a balance of research and theory but in an interesting way. the research is relevant. A little repetitive about the author's own life and 99% American research, thanks for the dose of Yale, but otherwise very interesting and enjoyable for what I've already read. I doubt I know anyone who has read this but I hope it gets into bestseller shelves and drugstores for people to see.
Material muy bien fundamentado y actualizado
El material me ha apoyado mucho para preparar cursos y materiales. Me ha gustado mucho porque está basado en la teoría de Mayer y Salovey de Inteligencia emocional y es una excelente aplicación para desarrollarla.
Books are important
Good read
Excelente producto
muy buen servicio llegó antes de lo esperado
Good read
Logical and practical approach to emotions ;)
muy bueno
Excelente libro
Brilliant
I really identify with the author. Very well written both entertaining but mostly very informative and makes you think! Such a great book, get it!!
Excellent accessible and practical!
This book is fantastic! It’s so well written and accessible and incredibly practical! I love the ‘Ruler’ tool the author presents and have already started to use it in my life whether at work or at home with my family! Understanding our emotions deeply and learning how to regulate them is extremely powerful! I can’t recommend this book enough and have already bought it for friends and family!
